AYANEO can also take advantage of this situation to push aggressive “hunger marketing” strategies, making their store pages feel full of a strong capitalist flavor. In contrast, Anbernic feels much more relaxed and open — there are no manipulative “launch prices” that make customers feel like they’re being played with, and no limited editions priced in a way that feels like blatant cash-grabbing.

Honestly this is something that really bugs me with tech in general. I know I'm not alone in this, everyone's complaining about

• a lack of accessibility, ie. the devices are glued/welded/clipped shut and sometimes CANNOT be non-destructively opened,
• a lack of repairability, ie. the part are hard to source/expensive/cannot be bought retail,
• under-engineered or low quality parts that break easily (often moving parts).

It may sound like a weird comparison, but a few months ago my gf's vibrator stopped working and after examining it thoroughly, I started thinking that it just cannot be opened. I looked for information for quite a while online (and believe me, "sex toy repair" is not exactly well advertised 😄 ) and everybody who tried to disassemble one had to cut (and therefore destroy) the silicone "sock" in order to access the internals.
We had to bring it back to the shop for an exchange… and it was just a know possible defect of the battery connector. When I asked the saleswoman if it was possible to fix it, she sighed, smiled with commiseration, and told us that they would of course exchange it for a new one but that sadly "FOR SANITARY REASONS" it could not be opened at all.

Another (maybe more on-topic) example is the TSP. On mine the left shoulder button stopped working, so I opened it and the switch had actually "gutted itself" and would have had to be entirely replaced. I looked online (not long, I admit) and couldn't find the same kind of switch anywhere… and even if I had, I doubt I'd have been able to buy just one or two.

It's really depressing when you compared that stuff to things made decades ago that were mega-super-overengineered, with massive tolerances, obvious screw and 100% replaceable or fixable parts. 🙁

There's a certain era of PC computing that seems to be stuck in "nostalgic limbo".

Post-DOS x86 hardware. The 2000s era CPUs that are clearly overpowered for DOS games, too slow to really enjoy Windows games (that kind of hardware came slightly later), useless for most emulation.

I'd say that stuff really is e-waste nowadays : big energy consumption, crappy efficiency, low performance. It's the stuff that (nearly) nobody wants to use and yet is still a horrible pain to recycle.

Handhelds are somewhat in that category. That's why we need more devices that can be disassembled and just plain fixed. 😕

To be clear, I'm absolutely not throwing stones here, only trying to be realistic. I have… (counts silently)… 8 handhelds for two hands and only one brain. 😄

Im talking prepro models that arthur keeps on his desk. They definitely dont skim parts for those. Theres been a few times where they had panel issues that werent present in retail. They are literally just thrown together with whatever comes out of the first batch from the factory. For a reviewer sure, they likely are extra careful with them but these units are almost entirely for display they are rarely even turned on past the wallpaper.

My unit has an interesting QC issue, the right stick only goes left/right and not up/down, wondering if its software as i've never seen this before.

But usual disclaimer of its a pre-production unit, and i'm letting them know to check for this.

Yeah, as long as theres no black bars in the mix IPS mostly is fine, with text etc usually actually better than OLED, but then there are those moments where you have dark content or mixed content and this rips me out of immersion.

Really depends on what content you're mostly using. Also motion handling is very different between OLED and IPS with OLED usually being roughly equal to double the motion clarity at the same Hz.

If you're used to LCD it will be a very decent panel I'm sure. But once spoiled with and used to OLED it's just really hard to not see the differences 😕

They are, same as the sticks on all the odin line of devices. They have a more smooth mechanism and less resistance but the travel is pretty similar to switch sticks just a smaller cap and way smoother.

For me it is very interesting and ergonomic, very waiting yours and other “normal” youtubers reviews. I use Portal with grip, and this is awesone and comfortable device, but i plan this one put in my crossbody bag, by this reason it is very interesting ergonomic without grip.

You'll see your RAM fill up on Windows for example no matter if you put 16GB in there or 32GB, regardless if it's actually needed by the current running app. It's designed this way. Hence also the more RAM the merrier

I think it really depends on how the Kernel/Resource Manager is set up.

I mean yeah, Window is using and bloating RAM too with unnecessary background crap. It's not like it's hogging all the RAM for only good reasons.

But basically the philosophy is true: cache as much stuff as you can in RAM for as long as you can for quicker access. Why would you for example flush loaded shaders out of memory when you don't need free RAM if there's a chance you need to access them later?

That's basically what the aggressive/conservative RAM settings do in various emulators

(There's also like 2 million ways you can implement this at OS and also app level^^)

It's shorter than the O2 and it doesn't have those extra 1cm "palm rest ears" the Konkr has (and basically also the Odin 2 has because of it's height)

The Odin 2 rests nicely on the palm and you can naturally get to the sticks and buttons, the Konkr fit looks similar. The Odin 3 is kinda "short"

Getting to the right thumbstick could feel a bit cramped on the Odin 3 imo

Konkr Pocket fit looks a lot more than Odin 2 ergo wise than the Odin 3 does.

Yes me , while I really like AYN enough to buy both gens of the Odin , I have a few nitpicks with my O2 to try something else this time like ergonomics, squeaky shoulder buttons and don’t like the reversed face buttons and prefer the Xbox placement of ABXY + AYANEO won this round easily for those budget minded .
Yes OLED screen on the O3 will probably be amazing but a good IPS screen is more than just “good enough” ,

As an Odin 3 backer the only interesting thing about the Konkr is to get another 6" as a complimentary affordable device with a different chip set. I don't see myself spending a premium on the Konkr for 8 Elite, especially since they'll probable ship later and way slower than the Odin 3. Also OLED is a must for me on the high end spectrum..

The weird start-select button layout alone would throw me off getting this as a primary device, but then there's the lack of OLED and Ayaneos sub-par track record regarding shipping and QC in the past. I don't trust them enough yet to consider going all-in money wise. Maybe the Konkr will be the same old story, maybe they manage a reboot here. idk, but all in all too much uncertainty. Too much marketing blah blah and half-lies in the past to keep customers at bay. AYN so far usually has made an honest impression to me. Not much blah blah, whilst initially stalling they do communicate delays and problems and try to fix them before sending out half-finished products.

Ips typical contrast ratio is around 1k to 1.5k:1, I think there are some in more expensive monitors around 2k?
VA (used in most of the higher end LCD TVs) starts from 3k to 5-6+k:1, but I doubt they will use it in handheld where viewing angle is important.

None of the two are really "close to oled" for contrast ratio, at least without local dimming (which has its caveats).
