But interestingly he and I connected a couple of weeks ago. I'd say we're friends now! My interview with Miguel (NeoStation) ended up happening the same week he interviewed Miguel, but since I was running it that day...he held back a week or so! (which was nice of him, thanks Rowan!). Neither of us are in this for the clicks or revenue.

We've covered the same people many times, and do cover some of the same programs, projects and devs. I guess that's because he and I are two of very few who prefer written work in a world of videos?

Comparing notes though, we're deviating from the same things for the near future, which is a bit of a blessing for readers of either! He prefers newsletter content, but I've got an open invitation to him if he ever wants to share a full article on the site!

It's a bit of an honor to be honest, that some of the handheld companies have approached me asking me to review their retro handhelds. I didn't expect that. This isn't my job, nor am I paid for writing for Gardiner's site. He's just a good friend of mine, and likes to let me write things for the site. It's just a hobby to me. I really love gaming, so I'm lucky people enjoy reading what I do.

It started out with the dev interviews a few years back, I realized a lot of my friends were behind the programs so many people were using, and thought people should hear their stories. And it kinda snowballed from there!

I'd like to! But it's hard to think of how exactly. I'm just glad there are some others who like to write, while I understand why YT is the dominant force in this kind of content, I still like the idea of a 'slower' way of getting this kinda thing. Once again, feel very lucky that people read my work!

I definitely like the written format better over video, it's just that it's harder to monetize so most content creators are not interested sadly, but I'm glad somebody is keeping the written format alive

Oh for sure! Gardiner's site doesn't run ads, but he has (as of a few days ago) 'site sponsors', and runs entirely on community donations. So I suppose I am lucky in that I just get to share my work without worrying about making a living off it. Its not my job, and I don't have to chase clicks or views. If an article gets a thousand or two clicks, then it's not a failure. It's just sharing another story! And if one gets billions of views, then...same result!

I think @ebon knot covered everything already, but I'll also point out that he's been interviewing devs for years on other channels. I've been mostly writing about other topics, although I have been following the emulation/handheld scene for a long time now.

We do seem to have similar goals though! There are a lot of YouTubers covering handheld releases, but emulation news as a whole is very underserved. There are tons of stories that don't get told or even mentioned outside of Discord servers.

What’s the difference? Full interview text means dialogues? I think I prefer article style where you write about the main points of the interviews and add quotes.

Yeah, full question/answer vs an article with quotes.

Article style definitely works better for some devs who might not be native speakers or projects that require a lot of context, but some devs put so much into their answers that I feel bad leaving anything on the cutting room floor.

Question: Will the new DualStack Mode, that tells the device to treat both screens as one screen, combine with Artemis so that I can dual screen local stream DS, 3DS, and WiiU from my PC?

I really just wanted a DS shaped streaming receiver so I was still into this unit long after everyone else was like, "RK3568, ewww!" What killed it for me was Stubbs' testing out streaming and telling me that there was no way to dual screen stream on the stock firmware. He also said that even if I could; the decode times ping pong between 5ms (very good) and 5000ms (very, very, very bad), or something like that.

Thank you for this demo. I guess there is no reason why Artemis shouldn't report it as one screen to my PC and work properly. The RG-DS is back to being something I'm actively considering the next time I have a $100 to burn.

Some handheld companies do this, like most recently with AYN sending an Odin 3 Max to a few devs (Eden/GameHub Lite and PortMaster). Encouraging software for the scene can only help these manufacturers.

I think ftn usually runs at higher brightness for filming ... might squeeze out a bit more battery life with both screens running dimmer.

It's never going to be an OG Odin 2 in terms of battery life (and we shouldn't expect it to be), but particularly on a dual-screen device with the two backlights lowering brightness should help a decent amount.

There is an expectation among sub 100 handhelds of a ~4-7ish hour battery life. I think you touch on a good point. Do we need to rethink that expectation with 2 screens? Bad for a single screen could be good for a dual screen so to speak.

my understanding is that 1) yes, other apps can still suffer from desync issues, depends on how the app handles the "external" display and 2) Gamma's DualStack solution in GammaOS is better to prevent desyncs across any app (but that only works for apps that span both screens, not for multitasking)

by the way, a while ago a Chinese reviewer complained that the top screen turns off when Android's built in battery saver mode is enabled, is this still an issue? for those of you with review units

as far as I can tell, the main achilles heel of this device now is the battery life, which is kinda poor

I don't find it unpleasant, or 'hot'. It's warm, but having spend so many hours it clearly hasn't deterred me, and I just forget its something people get angry over. From the sounds of things, you'll be fine.

But, caveat as always, I think when you're a 'professional reviewer' on YouTube (which is not me), you can dive into tiny details like this, they can be a focus. I think I'd...maybe represent the 'average consumer'? Who knows.

With the new OS update I'm definitely back to eyeballing the RG DS as a device worth giving a try, and the TrimUI Smart Pro S as well. I'm pretty darn attached to my RG40XXH since it's been my daily driver handheld basically since it came out and I've yet to find another small'ish handheld I like as much as it, but new devices are always fun to check out and there are a lotta original DS games I like and could use that second screen for.

If this thing were a little more powerful, I'd genuinely be tempted to get it just to play with dual screen Android without shelling out Thor cash. Also the fact that we're looking at an emulation handheld supposedly dedicated to the DS that has screens that aren't fit for integer scaling on DS, and only supports running DS games in the first place through an emulator that is no longer under development.

I have my own internal rubric for heat transfer on handhelds.

• up to 40C = I can feel the heat but it's not bad, I'll sometimes mention it but other times I won't (it depends on the location of the heat and whether I am touching it)
• 40C to 42C = warm to the point that it gets a little distracting, I would rather it not be there but I wouldn't call it "hot". This is the back of the RG DS.
• 43C and above = I tend to avoid playing on the device when it hits those temperatures, or I adjust my gaming. This is "complain" territory for me. TrimUI Brick gets up to 45C on the back when playing anything more demanding than PS1 titles, and about 43C when playing up to SNES, so I play more lightweight games on it.

This is all obviously subjective since heat transfer bothers some people (like me) and others don't really care, but my videos are pretty consistent in that regard. There are other factors like material quality and the location of the heat, too.

shouldnt have any issues with nearly any ds games using drastic. melonds is too demanding even for higher end devices. only issue would be input delay, but any handheld other than og hardware will have delay. only reviewers/devs have this device rn. we are all still waiting
