So this game is on more than just PS2? Which version is generally favored, out of curiosity?

frozen topaz

ps2, gamecube, og xbox, 360, pc. Seems like there are 2 pc versions. One more like the 360. One more like the previous generation. No idea what version, if any, are preffered.

i’m definitely feeling like playing the 360 version. i got Rapid’s approval for it in the other channel

The pc version that is a port of the 360 version is called "Gamer's Edition". I won't be playing that version because I don't wish to bring any more shame to my family.

Is GameCube the best version?

frozen topaz
#

This was a neat game that was more ambitious and film-like in its presentation that I would have expected from 2005. It was frustrating enough at points I probably wouldn't have finished if not for gotm. I felt like I was always spinning 360s trying to figure out where I was being attacked from or where my ai buddies were screaming from. A more reasonable fov would really have helped things when you're Jack. ||When you're Kong,|| easing up a bit on the film-like camera angles and having better controls would have helped me enjoy those sections more.

#

My favorite part was at the end when ||Kong said ACAB.||

when playing on Xenia, the first level is apparently completely unplayable

so i guess that knocks the 360 version out entirely, unless you’re playing on OG hardware

vast dune
#

GBA version looks pretty cool, a Zelda clone with kong sections being beat'em ups

vast dune
#

So I watched some videos and PS2 seems to have better textures in some instances, but no lightning effects and worse antialiasing than GC. But GC has no retroachievements. Upscaling and antialiasing can be added through emulation, so I'm probably gonna stick to PS2, but gonna play first level in both first to compare first hand

neat marsh

it looks like i’m going to be forced to play a last gen version. 360 through Xenia is borked in the first level, and I can’t get the PC ā€œGamer’s Editionā€ which is the next gen version, to launch. dang it

Gamer's Edition is an enhanced PC port featuring visual improvements from the Xbox 360 version like high resolution textures, bump mapping, higher quality 3D models and 32-bit color rendering. However this version features worse character lighting and missing facial animations.

vast dune
# neat marsh apparently there are two different versions of the PC game, and they both (?) ha...

Turns out I have the EU 360 port, that according to PC wiki doesn't have drm? They say the crack are just eu version files. Got it to run, definitely 60 fps cap is necessary, makes performance much more consistent. But the general stability is very low, wouldn't recommend anyone this version for a handheld device. I'm gonna play it for now (sweet mouse controls), but it did crash once, and I'm kinda accepting the danger that there might be some issues later on that will make it impossible to finish.

fossil laurel
#

I also read that the qtes in the PC version might be based around 30 fps lock and the timing fucks up if you play at 60? Not sure if that's true of both PC releases tho

#

Probably just gonna do GameCube. Looks marginally better than ps2 to me

vast dune
#

Since I can cap through driver, shouldn't be an issue

Bad news - King Kong does not run. Incase you are as stubborn as I am. The game actually launches and teases you. It runs GREAT. Then you get into the first level. Stare at the word Venture - and thats it. Nothing else works. It seems like a lot of "event triggers" are not working.

gusty jacinth

ā€œThe PSP is an older-gen console compared to the main consoles the game was initially designed for. The PSP also has really tiny discs that probably didn't fit much data on it, so the game needed to be condensed if they wanted to create that version.

There are no AI non-playable characters, a lot of the enemies and boss fights were cut out, and there are only 16 stages to be completed instead of 40.ā€

What are your findings lol. Sounds like its pretty bad. I didn't listen about the 360 version not working on xemu. But yea it don't work lol

vast dune
#

Second swamp level on PC was literally 5fps, nothing you can do, set it to 640x480, everything lowest setting and still 5fps, didn't want to play half of the game again on other platform so I kept pushing, thankfully it's a level with 3 other npcs that killed dinos, when two sections later game went to 15fps, I felt like I ascended to paradise

abstract brook
#

So I'm more inclined to listen now

#

What were you playing on?

vast dune
#

Level before that, was crashing the game when I was picking up Anne, but managed to get her to die by going forward with kong, and then it respawned me at check point with kong already holding her, so I managed to finish that level

vast dune
abstract brook
#

Wooooof

#

Yeah that can't be good if you're playing on a full desktop

#

Wondering if this game was this broken back in the day? Seems like it may have been

vast dune
#

Thought that it may be amd issue, but people with 3070/3080 report the same thing on the web

abstract brook
#

Thats insane. Yeah i'll just do ps2 on my rp5 then. I'd really "like" to play the next gen version but it seems like unless you dust off an x360 it aint happening

#

360 version I have some nostalgia for and I don't think I ever finished it

vast dune
#

Honestly I think it wasn't as bad back in the day, like I'm sure it was broken and unstable, probably ran at 25fps or smth but I don't remember games in 2005 running in 5fps and not being ruined by reviews and no reviews mention that

#

So probably some random directx thing, maybe if you have this one particular version from back in the day it would be fine

abstract brook
#

Well...Jack played on his gc and clearly it didn't go so well even on original hardware lol.

#

Seems like this game just chugs and people didn't even care lol

vast dune
#

I also emulated first two levels at gc and ps2 before I found my PC copy, and yea, both unstable, though I was upscaling and not running at native res, but ps2 seemed better, like it drops frames, but gc straight up slowed down

abstract brook
#

....noted lol

#

I'll probably give ps2 a whirl starting tonight. Hopefully it goes by pretty quick

#

Not super stoked on this one. I think the consensus is the game is "fine" but yeah performance issues are rampant

vast dune
#

Yea, the levels are short, pacing is pretty quick, good pick up and play game, though if you quit mid level you have to replay from the start

abstract brook
#

Yeah I mean I think ps2 w/ save states should mitigate that thankfully

abstract brook
#

Started the ps2 version last night on my RP5. Suuuuuper trippy visual glitches at 3x opengl so I switched to 2x on Vulkan and we're in business.

#

Played about 2 hours give or take. About 1hr 15 mins into the 4hr longplay on youtube. Game should go by pretty quick. Overall so far it feels like it very quickly is turning into a reptitive soup of just "greenish/gray textures" and chuck spears, burn bushes, open gates, run to the next checkpoint

#

Its not a bad game by any means but nothing really exciting going on.

dusk peak

Funny how the game became a slideshow once I got to the brontosaurus section with fire and raptors happening at the same time. 🤣

dusk peak

Kong controls are abysmal, couldn't have been happier to get back as Jack.

#

Had a similar issue happen on a different chapter, apparently I didn't trigger an event to happen to allow me to move forward.

abstract brook
#

Ugh. Nvm. You have to go over to the side but the game forces you over to the wrong side

#

Even though in some playthroughs folks seem to just jump that ledge and go right to where they need to go. The controls to get over to Ann to scoop her up were also horrible

#

As jack its not great...but tolerable. Kong they arbitrarily force you into weird little predetermined "tracks" that make the game feel "bad"

deft gull
#

Just had a glitch lock up the game where the Kong Jaw-snapping animation just froze up, didn't save or save state at all today so I've lost all progress I've mademariodead

The problem with the kong sections is that they tried to make them as cinematic as possible, at the cost of playability

#

They’re very hit or miss

For a licensed game was actually enjoyable. The storyline was movie level great. Gameplay wise wasn’t too bad - most of the times balancing spear action and saving bullets. The only let down was the FPS issues.

I'm looking forward to the end of this, it's not been a bad experience but the gameplay loop of setting brush on fire, finding a pile of infinite bones to stand on while being assaulted, and walking slowly though water is getting a bit thin. Kong sections are even worse since it's just a drunk dad simulator (rage, punch, and awkwardly swinging around)

Performance hasn't hindered me yet but I did have one crash. About 80% through the game

  • Kong controls like crap
  • Jack controls "ok" but not great
  • The game gets tedious by the
time you're 2 hours into it
  • sometimes you "die" because one of the other idiots is being attacked and you cant find them in time
  • most of the game is really easy / linear with no collectables or reasons to explore
  • a few sections will require a few replays

Not great. Not terrible

What about the movie? Is it worth watching? I’ve never actually seen it.

Just finished it as well. Pretty solid game!

# quaint robin Great game. Good physics.

Lol I only saw this now when you linked it in champions. What a sight to behold!
Reminds me of the moment I had in the snake boss fight when 5+ snakes were just ragdolling around Kong. They didn't seem to receive damage or anything, they were just bouncing wildly

#

Maybe I too need to set a screen record hot key

LMAO I had a point when playing as Kong where I fell over into the water, slowly slid into the ground, then shot straight up in the air lmfao

The waterfall fight as Kong against the three dinos was glitchy af for me, completed it three separate times and Kong would glitch out and float off into outer space...

#

Or start doing front flips into the waterfall. Comically frustrating

You experienced Peter Jackson's true vision that could only be experienced through the medium of video games

Yeah I got frozen with the third dino 3 times. Even showed the wife just two creatures spinning in place lol

I was so mad, I hadn't saved

Yeah, that’s exactly where I had issues too

Game was mostly fine for me, except one part where you have to jump to a tree in the middle of a lava lake and then jump to an opposite wall. Jumped just fine the first time, and then just refused to jump. Ended up taking like 10+ attempts of the same thing before Kong decided to jump to the wall and not just fall into the lava doggylol

Yep that whole stage is fiddly as all hell

Finito!

I had to redo the part where you jump between walls and the bats fly down the middle right when you need to cross like 5 times before I got it

#

It seemed like no matter how I timed it, it wouldn’t work, and you couldn’t just wait for them to pass because it wouldn’t knock you off the wall

That’s interesting. I got through that one on my first try. I didn’t even know the beats would knock you off. I just jumped to the other side at the earliest opportunity, because why not? The other path was running out. I guess I lucked out on the timing.

Yeah, the answer was just doing it earlier than I originally thought I could do it.
