#Retroid Pocket Classic
1 messages · Page 14 of 1
I mean I kind of get it. It’s more premium than 40XXV. And probably a lot of people prefer the look without the stick
would be a joke if its weaker than the t618, especially on the gpu side. they seems very evasive when asked about the specifications
It’s just not the kind of Goldilock device that I think the usual Retroid try to achieve
This is a good point
If I didn’t already have RG40XXV I would have taken the bundle
they said it was like an overclocked SD4Gen2, so I expect Helio G99 performance
I don't completely hate the idea of a more specialized device, just wish I liked the look of the device more tbh
Like the trimui brick could take advantage of a stick, but it looks so good that I don't mind. Don't know if I can say the same about this
I like more specialized devices like RG34XX for GBA and RG ARC for Genesis
But I don’t get the 6 buttons here without the form of Saturn controller or Sega dpad
Tbh, Im probably gonna get the teal 4 button
Cause I mainly wanna play SNES, GBA, GBC, GG, and PS1
Most PS1 doesn't use stick which is nice
realistically speaking a vertical sucks for stick centric gaming anyway
so even on my rg406v I mostly do games that don't use sticks
the adreno 613 in the 4 gen 2 should be slightly better than the g52mp2 in t618, not at g99 level. Maybe for the cpu.
I actually enjoy playing arcade games with the stick of 40XXV
Even though the stick sucks
But that’s also because I don’t have another device with a stick yet
well, we don't know what it is yet, given that it's a "new" SoC anyway
8:7
Yes
Or really
31:27
But that still boils down to 8:7, so yeah
Good for NES, SNES, and Pico
also OLED, so anything that isn't filling the screen out will blend nicely with the bezel
at least on the good colors
yeah snes on full acutally looks good
I still need the RP Mini with this screen
Mmmmm blue
It is a very nice blue
Bigger than I would have though
Thought
Kind of makes me want a mini now just for the stick
Is it me just having nostalgia glasses on or does Saturn emulation on the classic not look smooth?
I sincerely hope they rerelease the mini after the launch of these two handhelds
They did enable the frame counter.. you can see the frames skipped
That’s not good
I wasn’t really buying it for Saturn but would have hoped it did do it with having the 6 button config
The saturn dream on this is dead. Yeah it will be fine to mess around with but doesn’t look like it will be a great way to experience the system other than messing around.
that's the thing, yaba on t610/t618 looked smoother
I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet, maybe they configured something badly
That's what im thinking
I would wait till the reviews go through the device
My RP2S didn’t look smoother
Also hate how they’ve positioned the screen with a fat bar at the bottom 🤣
when I played some saturn on my rp2+ it looked smooth enough (by yaba standards)
specifically virtua fighters megamix
I bought my RP2S because people told me it was great for Saturn.
How naive I was 😛
I’m hoping Saturn is playable when I try it out
welcome back
Anyways I’m happy to order a 4 button later today. This thing will be great for gb/snes and ps1 🙂
Some adult hands would be nice too
Not sure exactly what the sticks are like on the TSP but they have uses. With my RG351P for example, the right stick was useful for playing arcade games in tate mode.
I released a comprehensive RG351P arcade guide on my site today, but one of my favorite aspects of this device is how well it plays vertically-oriented arcade games. So let's check them out, and go through all the settings you need to get everything working perfectly.
Note that I misspoke at around 05:15 in the video. You need to set the FBNe...
wouldn't it be too uncomfortable to hold the tsp like that lol
I understand for smaller devices
Oof that Saturn gameplay is hard to watch
a less compromised tate mode is one of the reasons I am (or was) looking forward to the touch one 35
Is it possible to change my preorder color?
No idea. Probably. Wasn't the best experience on the 351p, but with it being relatively tiny, it definitely felt much more like a multi tool of a handheld
It wasn't really the best at anything but up to psx it ran well enough with even some PSP for light games or if you were okay with frame skip.
The classic is looking both bigger and smaller than expected in this demo lol
Or maybe I’ll tough it out and stick with Saturn
Idk that Saturn emulation just hurts my bones
something is up with it methinks
idk whether or not it's a yaba issue but this showcase made me wish they tested beetle instead
Drivers maybe?
It’s size is very close to a 40xxv
I wish people showed saturn emulation on the G99
peeps are speculating they were running saturn games at 1080p
if true, that would do it lol
THEY ARE
They said in the comments they left everything on default settings
Running it at native would probably be super smooth, but 1080, hell no
Tbh it's understandable why they'd leave it to defaults but yeah...lmao
So Saturn might actually be good?
Like at a native res
I actually like how chunky native res Saturn looks
I don't actually know much about Yaba San Shiro personally or how it performs with the resolution setting change
Resolution does make a difference
Iirc, I tried Yaba on my RP3+ at 1080 and it CHUGGED
240 or 480
240 to 480
I just know some emulators just upscale it with regular image scaling and have a different setting for internal resolution so yeah I wouldn't have known it to be an issue off the top of my head
Also frameskip enabled by default? Interesting default settings on that app
I remember emulating as a kid and just using the frameskip to make it less laggy until a game worked
I can't remember what system but I know I've done like a 3-4 frameskip because I thought it was running better lol. Guess that's what happens when you're used to PC games with sub 20fps
Yeah but imo frame skip should only be used if it can’t full speed at native res
Definitely. I was more laughing at kid me thinking frame skip was a free performance button
Yeah lol we’ve all been there
I also remember liking Super Eagle on SNES
I use those pixel smoothing shaders
I used to use super eagle and upscale to 1024x768 at first. But as j got a wide screen monitor, I'd stretch it to fit lmao
I was so excited to move on from my crt to a nice fancy flat panel. 1366x768 with so much extra room on the sides of the screen
Definitely a lot more picky with emulation, I know that much.
black bars for 4:3 just show up on bottom for this kind of resolution? not equally spread between top and bottom?
Can't decide how I feel about the Atomic Purple. Color looks good and all but I kind of can't take my eyes off all the pimples
Atomic Purple is an exceedingly hard color to nail. Half of these handhelds either look too dark or too washed out.
IRL vs. renders, I mean.
Gotta love the rock music they used in the overview
It's that typical rock music you see in 90% of YouTube pre-roll ads.
It compels me to click Skip
Outside of that, Saturn performance seems pretty acceptable on that video!
Where’s my anbernic country music
It actually could be better since they’re running frameskip and 1080p.... both of which doesn't do the performance justice
XD
One note is that it’s running at 1080p, which is a pretty sizable upscale
I imagine Saturn should play well on this when not upscaled
Seems so!
To be fair, Nintendo mostly made it work because they added a white backdrop internally to the device. Could use white silkscreened PCB or just white plastic
But yeah. Transparent plastic is extremely hard to render accurately
Just the basic mix and dye used in the plastic can really effect light diffusion
Yeah the white PCB makes a big difference.
But it's SO different it just loses the appeal.
Yeah. That was the most glaring difference in the vid. Haha
Not as aggregious as the Powkiddy V10 which was like, more pink than anything.
Not pink enough to be kirby tilt n tumble but not purple enough to evoke GBC atomic purple.
I went with the Atomic Purple, but agreed all around.
Would have gone Grape or Black, if available.
Solid grape is such an iconic GBC color. Sad to not see it as an option.
some mad lad will paint his board white
For me, I don't like sticks on vertical devices. vertical devices i like to take with me in my pocket when i go out. a stick gets in the way of that. i also don't plan on playing anything that needs a stick on an 8:7 screen. i would have wantged a pocket dmg if it didnt have the stick. you're right its not a goldilocks device, but that's the appeal for me. I wanted a dmg with no stick and an even better screen than the brick, to use as a edc. this is it.
Based on how good it looks in Berry, I agree that Grape would have gone CRAZY
when i see it like this, its a warmer yellow but i like it.
I went kiwi, because that was the color i wanted in the GBC and never got.
Yeah - you can see a slight difference in the kiwi too. It's not a 100% match but it's so close that unless it's side by side you'd never notice.
Debating on swapping to this from Saturn
yeah im looking for a nostalgia feel. 98% of the way there is fine
man it sure is alot less whiney, and negative in this channel compared to the official discord
this was my internal debate. ultimately i went with pkm not only because of the color, but most games i'll be playing work better with a standard diamond button layout.
objectively, the saturn version is better. 2 more buttons = extra hotkeys, 6 button capcom fighters
I’m willing to compromise on layout so I went with Saturn
I'm happy with the colors IRL and I personally don't care for Saturn, so my biggest hope now is that it has enough juice to experiment with different shaders.
but i dont play fighting games in single player and i'm ok with 2 less hot key possibilities
I want this for PS1, but I'd love to have some extra power to play with CRT filters.
what is the Retroid Discord unhappy about? 😂
what arent they happy about
nothing is good enough for those peeps
the great thing about ps1 is, if you use duckstation, and turn on widescreen hacks, it'll fill up the 8:7.
129 dollar vertical amoled handheld sounds damn good to me
widescreen? more like tallscreen
aspect ratio is perfect for what i wanted
I'm planning to set everything up just like we saw in the demo video today.
Big chunky black bars at the bottom.
make sure to set the resolution to 1080p while you're at it
GBC NES SNES Pico-8 and GB
So apparently the classic ships out 3 days after the flip2?
right pico 8 on android is less than ideal
And turn on frame skip
either you have to use the fake-08 retorarch core which is not fully accurate or you would have to run it through winlator
ok maybe not pico-8
ive been using the winlator set up and its worked fine
unless it gets linux support which would make it pretty much perfect for what i want it for
Russ showed the Flip 2 using Linux so I can dream that maybe the Classic gets that too.
thats because that chip already has a build from the rp5
I wonder it handles the C and Z buttons in Android/RA
them actually being partnered with snapdragon gives me a little hope tho
Yeah I'm not holding my breath 😄
me either, but it would be nice
It was crazy that when they revealed the classic they couldn't give the specs because of an embargo from Qualcomm
I have the bar set low on this so I’ll be happy. From the beginning I’ve said I’d be happy with a rg35xxv+ with oled lol
Yea the size thing is different than expected. Of course they disclosed the dimensions but seeing one gives a different impression
Shouldn’t be too hard to sell on if it’s not great in person
yeah they all think they know the exact performance of the new SD chip that no one has had their hands on yet in the official discord
Doesn’t the Xinput standard have C and Z in it?
But I’m leaning toward the rpmini more and more. Did they fix the screen thing on it?
Not yet afaik
What kinds of games are people really expecting to play with no analog triggers and no sticks??
I'll be happy with enough power for CRT shaders/masks,
They will ship out replacement screens this month
My main on this thing is CPS
Dang, but no consoles with the new screen installed? I guess even if they did, it wouldn’t beat the de minimus deadline
Oh they complained about shaders too saying they gunna cause burn in
2nd hollow knight playthrough
n64 would've been so nice 😢
for the 6 button version
It’s not an expectation as much as it’s just a bonus
I am mostly going to be playing stardew on Android, then the usual gameboy, gameboy color and some gameboy advanced and DS when I feel like it.
The main thing for me will be using this to listen to music and audiobooks at work.
Basically anything that's more 2d oriented, or something like Animal Crossing that doesn't require complex controls to really play (can just map stick to dpad)
I don't think most people will be getting this to play 3d based consoles, but they're nice bonuses
Im not getting it for anything that needs sticks so im good
im glad they didnt shoehorn sticks on it. Prolly wouldent have gotten it.
I already have GameCube and switch on the sd card ready to test
One stick would make me this an easier decision to keep honestly
Like a more budget friendly pocket dmg
I wouldent get it even if it had one
To each their own
Biggest reason I didn't get a 40XXV
I wanted a vertical with no sticks and a really nice screen thats pocketable
not so much android but eh
my problem with pocket dmg wasn't the presence of the stick itself but the placement, among other things
it was the price and the stick for me
I'm not one to say vertical handhelds shouldn't have sticks ever but then again I'm not super nostalgic for that form factor in the first place
I just dont need them so they are in the way
I have handhelds that have sticks for things that need sticks
I think it’s just having the option of additional gaming
I know they are deeply unpopular, but I actually really like slider pads a la RP Flip and 3DS
they provide stick-like functionality without adding bulk
3ds was meh, rp flip was actually decent
My thumbs are to big for sliders
It can be done well, like the profile of the a30 stick is great imo
theres plenty of verticals with sticks tho
Not that size or with android
way less good ones without
selfishly I thought it'd be nice if they threw one in for the 6 button version and left the others alone lol
if the brick was a bit bigger i would be set
Yea that would be great
GTA vice city on Portmaster plays great on it without sticks
Really hoping San Andreas will run on this new one
Just wish the pocket dmg was more reasonably priced
Yup and some of the games at weird aspect ratios that weren’t flattering to the screen at all
you mean like this?
Better than nothing I suppose lol
mighty number 9 flashbacks
if it was the same brick, but oled, then id be set. im ok keeping both the brick and classic. will sell off all my other "pocket" devices like the 2s, miyoo mini, 35xxh
with all this stick talk, while im in the no stick camp, a slider on the other hand....
Oh god lol That Saturn performance is significantly worse than the Saturn performance on an RK3566! All those Saturn games they showed run a lot better on my RG353V than they do on the RP Classic. I guess the new Snapdragon G1 Gen2 chipset is meant to be a PS1 and below sorta thing.
They have the resolution in the emulator settings set to 1080p x3
Might play a lot better at native resolution
Ohhhh! That makes much more sense then. At native Saturn might actually play reasonably well.
it also looks like they were trying to play saturn at 16:9 (whhhhhhhy?)
i see no point to upscaling saturn, just give me them chunky pixels
GIMME THEM CHUNKY POLYGONS
Let's just hope they didn't half-ass the handheld QC as much as they half-assed the gameplay video XD
We will know by next week as reviwerz are getting their units soon
According to the comments they used default settings so people can get a realistic idea of performance
But
Understandable but silly. They could just mention the settings they changed
Not for China
Opens up the possibility of proxy shipping tho
ugh tariffs on china are probably being raised again
Yeah they’re at 125% atm
Mhm smuggling
4px planning expansion
Proxy services will probably become the norm if the crayon gets his way
waiting for the 500% tariff on China to hit
idk how it's going to be implemented but I'd assume it'll care about origin of manufacturing
If they even get implemented with how much of a stink it's made
some sort of de minimis removal is inevitable
it was signalled even from biden administration
probably not eleven billionty percent tho
Wouldn’t surprise me. It’s pretty much just a dick measuring contest at this point
Totally
At the expense of literally everything...
It’s just posturing now
The "harder on China" stance is to make him look strong in the face of backing down everywhere else.
yea too bad it coincided with several things I wanted to consooom from china
Too bad for everything.
thought about preordering and didn't because it's too much wishywashy bullshit
Think of how much wasted productivity, mental load, and dollars spent on responding to this chaos. If you are a small business... you've no doubt spent the past few days planning to get into a new line of work.
idk if retroid can ship it on time even with dhl
...if you imported goods that couldn't be reshored.
retroid has reason to give optimistic dates too
I popped on r/flashlights this morning... same conversations that we're having here.
Music equipment... same conversation. The fact that this infiltrated every corner of every discourse in every hobby... so sad.
preorder/groupbuy ship estimates have almost never been on time for me
im trying not to think about CoL increases
I mean, he can do 20% on everyone tbh and it would be fine-ish
🤷 wild times.
I miss the days of not caring about / knowing what the president is up to.
I miss the days when the president actually tried to help the American citizens
whoa, let's not get crazy here
politicians trying to help the citizens, are you nuts Sniffer?!
At a certain amount it's probably the end for many hobbies
best case honestly is not trying to actively cause harm and Trumpy boy ain't there yet, so you gotta chill a bit anyway
I miss Obama as well
with that said, looking forward to receiving my RP5 tomorrow
I can’t wait till I get my flippy 2
only handheld in my life are from Nintendo and my GPD Win Mini, any more and it begins to get complicated 😛
is that a joke? sometimes I'm not sure with ya guys
i was being sincere, imo the last great president but of course others will disagree and that's okay. We don't all have to like the stuff, just like I don't find the RP Classic appealing yet here I am 😛
I would rather take Bush
but I'm not a US citizen, so it doesn't matter too me anyway
yeah man... i mean who wears a tan suit? i'll take stupid wars and illegal warcrimes over tan suits any day
the last great US President was whomever kept his hands out of world politics, thanks for coming to my ted talk and now back to handhelds
really now, that message got me level 100?
regarding your level 100
PFFFF
I don't think there's a single president that completely ignored world politics.
Vote Booster: Vote now for a 10% boost. https://arcane.bot/vote
Weep
but there was a time when the US was insignificant
Nuh uh
overinflated ego, Mr. German-scientist-thief ? 😛
We basically set the standard for revolutions
okay, I will go now and come back when Americans fixed their ignorance of WORLD HISTORY (like that would ever happen)
wtf is going on here
nothing
when is the black edition coming out?
when everyone who was buying a classic has already bought one
or maybe itll be reserved for the next classic iteration with an upgraded soc
current events, the t-word, will ruin my chances anyways
would you rather pay tariffs, or be drafted to war
for the classic which is a poor mans Pocket DMG?
the pocket dmg has grown on me, seems like my personal end-all for vertical handheld gaming
gpd win mini seems to be up there for that
too big]
I just want Retroid to sell the Mini
basically i want miyoo flip with oled and quality control
aah, yeah that makes sense
and stereo speakers
would have to be down/side/back firing cause the sticks are in the way i guess
you are the importer when you buy direct from Chinese companies
By importer I mean the carrier, like DHL
Can’t wait to see what DHL charges for brokerage on top of the tariffs
If they treat it the way they do in Canada you’re probably looking at a large bill
Smaller packages are usually not levied in Canada post from my experience. I've bought a dozen cheap things from ali and none cost extra after landing here.
Legally all packages above $20 are supposed to be levied
Yeah 4px is usually fine
DHL is definitely not fine in Canada and unlikely to be fine in the USA next month
Private couriers like ups and DHL bill huge brokerage fees on top of the import levies which are not government charges at all
(In Canada and presumably soon the USA)
Forgive me Saturn homies, I ordered a 4 button
Blocked and reported
What can I say that new demo was rough 😅
Mods ban this heathen
To be fair the demo was done at 1080p
Yeah. At least with 4 I'll never be tempted
Which was a pretty sizable mistake
Yeah well Yaba sucks. I’ll order the Saturn one if we get shock reviews and it can run beetle full speed somehow lol
Yaba is fine for a lot of games
Not really it’s okay to mess around in not actually a good way to experience the system
Whats the highest system they showed in that video?
Saturn
How does the level of Saturn performance compare to other devices? The choppiness + frame skip? Tough to say without having it in hand and making sure it's optimized?
Comparable to RP4?
Too early to tell
Can’t really tell since they had it upscaled to 1080p in that video.
If you enjoy Yaba sanshiro it looks like it should run a lot of games well at native res though probably best to wait for reviews
Already pre-ordered, but curious if Saturn performance can be a proxy for how other systems might run.
Saturn is tricky
I noticed the frames dipping to 40-50 in the video
It was running at over 2x so yes
Does anyone with more experience with verticals have any insight to the likely ergonomics and pocketability of the classic? I’ve got one ordered but I’ve been wondering if I should switch to the Flip 2
Ergonomics are almost never a strong point on verticals, but pocketability is usually a strong point
lol i got almost the same message at the same time in the flip 2 board. Thank you haha, I am learning 🙏
One major factor however is that the RP Classic is quite a bit bigger than most verticals
its bigger than the mini verticals sure, but its about the same as the 40xxV
If the gpu is lagging in that vid it tells us nothing about the beetle Saturn question. Beetle Saturn is all about single core cpu
Beetle emulating the Saturn gpu using your device cpu instead of trying HLE to translate Saturn gpu calls to your cell phone gpu is why it’s more accurate
Interesting, how does that sit in terms of pocketability? Assuming like above average pocket size, lol (loose streetweary cargo pants, not massive pockets but not tiny)
the two bigger ones are pretty close to a real game boy color, so still pretty pocketable
easy sweatshirt pockets
Yeah that’s a great point. The Saturn hopium lives.
I’ll actually order a second one if it plays beetle Saturn full speed
I’m waiting for those tests before ordering one
shame the bezel is that thick, especially for oled
thats just how that screen is
Bezels are fine
They add to the aesthetic
Yeah something like the RP Mini bezel is terrible
technically its the same screen and bezel
yeah, just unfortunate that this is the only panel available in this size/format
new features unlocked! hahaha
this is what i was expecting
id like to see the classic beside a pocket dmg
Probably same size but the dmg being a bit taller
Since they have the same screen n all
yeah im pretty happy with the size
nearly same size as r36s but with higher quality and stronger ship. Hell yea
Every so slightly smaller than the 40xxv but without a stick, nice
One thing that will help with pocketability is that it's curved in the back and the shoulder buttons don't protrude beyond the shell.
The 34xxh is surprising pocketable despite its thickness because of the curve
I love my 34xx, bring it everywhere and find it’s super comfortable. Always thought the 40xxv would have been way more pocketable if it didn’t have the stick…
Lo and behold the rp classic is the same size and form factor as the 40xxv but without a stick.
One nice thing about the big battery will be so we can crank the screen brightness when using crt shaders
All in it was like $150, wondering if its worth cancelling and geoing for a pocket mini or pocket micro
Tbh resale on these will probably be nuts stateside one de minimus goes away
I would honestly imagine most devices will sell like gangbusters once everything comes to pass on the marketplace.
nothing because i put off preordering to see if reviews were good
now im pissed, no early order, so i wont beat tariffs and i still dunno if the devices are good cuz retroid likes to send dev units instead of finished product to review

Teal gang rise up!
haha, i'm the only person getting pokemon yellow
but that's OK, it'll be stonks post-tarrif
That was my second choice
wait wait what is this I'm reading that tariffs have been paused
Not in China iirc
oh except china gdi
Yeah so we're still in it rn
this truly is madness
Like why are these 1000 more than the pocket classic, better chip and a stick raise it by that much?
collector prices
Collectors price, stronger chip, probably more premium feel, thumb stick, touch pad, cool volume wheel, fingerprint reader, more storage, more ram, etc.
That said the normal DMG prices are more realistic
Probably one of the best speakers I've had in a handheld. Heh
didnt realize it was a collector item
They have the 1tb in retro color in stock, but 669 is hard to stomach
What do you do with that power on a 4” 8:7 screen
Play everything in a super nostalgic device
True enough
We’ve been over this. Outrun 2006!
I keep forgetting…..
Just play psp outrun on the classic?
In what aspect ratio 😱😱😱
The one where 40% of the bottom half of the screen is pitch black lmao
Am I the only one that ignores shaders and aspect ratios?
I play psp on the a30 lol
I used to. Until I turned one on for sf3 (crt hellalia or something). Now I’m gonna experiment with shaders more often
If theyre preconfigured thats cool, but its too overwhelming for me to mess with
Same. I only look at those ones
And even then, at first I found it overwhelming cause there’s just too many to choose from
I grew up with CRTs and I'm not a fan of those filters either
Shaders fine but people that play with stretched aspect ratios are unhinged 😛
Watching definition get better in real time makes it not hard to not want to go back
Better streched aspect ratios than not playing a game at all
I’d get a new hobby lmao
I guess I get it, but like having the option to play psp on the a30 is better than not having the option to
To each their own
I also can’t stand stretched ratios
i still play on CRTs and have to add shaders. i cant do the raw pixel look
SNES stretched isn't that bad on this screen characters just look a lil taller lol
What resolution is your crt
i have a commodore 1702 and a jvc d series, both on svideo, i use a mister pi and a hacked wii
so 240p
240p still gives raw pixel look?
oh sorry, i meant because i still play on crt, on emu devices i need shaders
Ah
Yeah for sure that’s not too bad
Yep GDEMU kit off aliexpress will do wonders
I used to have a widescreen Toshiba crt. Gave it away do’h!
seeing that picture also made me wish I hadn't given away my CRT but tbh I don't miss moving it around
i had a wide screen sony trinitron... i also gave it away. i hate myself every day for that mistake
Yeah that’s why I’m clinging onto this 14inch one. I don’t have space for a big one
I’m glad oled is around
i have this cute little 9 inch philips that i use for tate mode. only has composite but at that size it looks good
Some games look nice with composite. Pre-rendered backgrounds look sweet
sonic of course is the big one
I have the black dreamcast
Sega sports nice! They’re worth more too
I used to work at a retro game store in college so Id get first pick of when we got stuff in, have a turbografx, saturn, top loader nes, some other ones I cant remember
I had to give away my old console when I buy new one. My parents think I shouldn’t have more than one at a time.
Until PS2 I am old enough to keep it😂
I pre-ordered the retro 2 weeks ago for those classic dmg vibes, but now that we have actual pictures instead of renders I'm starting to have doubts. That teal version actually looks really slick...
Wondering if the pocket dmg case would fit the classic….

Pretty sure it can since DMG is a bit bigger.
DMG probably thicker too
Personally, with no stick, I'll be going with a sleeve anyway
Vita sleeve?
It'll probably live in one of these that I already own
Assuming my DMG fits. Haven't tested it yet
Like stickless stuff usually gets the sleeve for me. Anything hardcase seems overkill and sleeves do well in pockets
Currently using a switch lite sleeve on my rp5. Works great
The rp5 is always easily accessible
I have the official RP5 case for travel but at home I never put it in one
I don't really see a point, at least living alone. It's not going to break on a table.
I use the case as a little home for my RP5, and keep cables and headphones in the pouch.
I need to find some good wireless earbuds for gaming
i'll gladly sell my my DMG bag if and when it ever ships out from Droix 😛
Oh me handhelds
Saw some Soundcore ones I might try
Or I could buy the totally not white label official retroid earbuds
I get some kind of covering for everything to stop dust from gathering
I use mine frequently enough that it's a non-issue
If I weren't using it for a period of time, then I use a case or bag or something. But if I'm using it like nearly every day, then no
Holy shit
Someone in this hobby? Actually playing on their devices?
I am shook
retroid is going to reupload the saturn demo with corrected settings
hope they test beetle
They are?
That’s good news
That initial demo was embarrassing
I felt the embarrassment by proxy
Felt rushed
Would be nice to see other colors in action
Did people make sure to elaborate that we’d prefer them testing Beetle over Yaba?
Also with regular sized hands?
IMO there’s no shame in not being able to do 1080p Saturn on a $130 handheld
Good beetle performance at that price would be amazing
Saturn is like PS1, upscaling doesn’t really add to the experience to me
I’d rather use the overhead for shaders
no, you're wrong... i need to have the most performance for the lowest cost. How dare you, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! /s
Beetle at native res is the goal for me to bother with a classic 6
I don’t need upscaling but yaba ain’t it
i just wanna use saturn to play die hard arcade
Isn’t that a game that requires beetle?
I don’t think yaba can run that
i'll still buy this once it comes out in black and tariffs are smoothed out 🙃
I think most of the people who use their devices aren't really in the forums and discord and such beyond troubleshooting tbh
I bought into handhelds specifically to not tinker all the time.
I set it up once, get everything going with good settings and a good launcher, and don't really change anything outside of regular updates because I got the device to use it and not to troubleshoot the edge of emulation possible on it all day every day
Also these channels are about discussion of the devices themselves rather than the games
Still great for sharing configuration information
Certain games need tweaks and a lot of tinkerers don't play games to completion to validate settings/compatibility
BOY I CANT WAIT FOR THE RP CLASSIC
why come they cut the saturn footage?
You guys think the giant black bar will be on the top for the next demo video?
they sobered up and realized they did not put on a good show
they're planning to redo the demo
this did not look good lol, ill admit
either center it or put a bezel at the bottom that says saturn or something
And that's why I got my Payaneo Pocket DMG
It wasn't just the screen placement. They upgraded to 1080p so it was struggling. They should've shown the native res
theres also the option to upscale without increasing native resolution but people forget that optoon exists all the time
This demo was so bad that I’m embarrassed for them
im lowering the bar, but....
the fact that yaba ran like that at a 1080p upscale, while not a good showcase, lets me think this chip might be fine. was worried it may have compatibility issues since its so new
this is where i curse it
it's gonna be cursed alright
all the incompatible or janky games in yaba will be almost-but-not-quite playable in beetle
Yaba apologists make me sick 😛
I'll give it credit where it's due
Yaba is good for the games that play well on it
we can't judge beetle performance on a yaba video - HLE with upscaling was GPU constrained and all we care about for beetle saturn is single core CPU
🤞
aha yeah that was a joke in response to shadow star jinxing the handheld
I don't think we have enough data to be either optimistic or doomer about beetle saturn performance on the classic yet - it's entirely unknown - the g1g2 has two overclocked performance cores the s4g2 it's based on did not have
but we have no idea what the clock speed even is on those
if the performance cores are A78 like originally rumored I think it'll pull off good beetle performance
Either way I’m sticking with my 4 button order. I can play Sega Rally or Shining the Holy ark just fine with a 4 button layout.
Even if it’s not quite the same
which color did you go with?
ping on the poll if we are asking about colours
TIL discord polls arent anonymous
Teal 😁
I got Atomic Purple for the nostalgia. I loved my Atomic Purple GBC, first and only time I messed with “no-trimming” screen kits simply because I wanted to keep the oem shell.
The first console I ever owned was the atomic purple gbc, had to use one of those plugin lights to play whenever it was dark lol
Yeah it was between purple and teal for me. I loved my atomic purple gbc.
My first console was the og game boy though I prefer the gbc by far.
It used fewer batteries which was nice
Not only did it use 2 vs 4 AA batteries but the battery life itself was way better.
I swear its a thing where a console has a good selling generation, and it goes to the companies heads....lol
Yeah, except unlike most companies Nintendo’s not making the same mistake as before, instead they’re innovating on something that was already a success and making it better (to the point that you can literally buy a switch 2, never buy a single switch 2 game, and still get by on a backlog of switch 1 games that all play better than they would on Switch 1).
In other words, we’re in unexplored territory, where Nintendo chose to refine their already successful idea instead of reinventing the wheel.
Cant the same be said for the different iterations of the gameboy?
Like the advance was an improvement on the OG and was backwards compatible
Fair enough, although that just makes it go from unexplored territory to “they’ve literally always been successful when they’ve done the same thing but better, with even the 3DS outright managing to go from a near disaster to actually well off”.
Nintendo has and will always have a huge fan base, but theyve been different/innovative, even if it sometimes feels like they release the same game over and over
Like specs couldve been even worse, and price even higher for the switch 2, and theyd still probably sell out whenvever the presale goes live
Oh I’m fully considering the hybrid controller+mouse controls the outright wildest thing they’ve ever done.
Like, that’s something that I’ve seen people do only for most to treat it as obscene, and now Nintendo’s just straight up making it a standard option for their newest console.
Never forget
I’m talking about the controller plus mouse.
Like, right hand on controller, left hand on actual mouse, and just playing like that on pc games.
Oh interesting
Theyve always tried unique things
Remember the power glove
And virtual boy
one of video gaming's greatest moments
power glove sucked tho - it was way more fun just to use it as a toy
No doubt switch 2 will be a success, but I seriously doubt it will sell switch 1/ds/ps2 numbers.
Even though I think the price for the console itself is fair for what you get it’s still just too expensive for 150+ million sales numbers
Depends on if it sticks around as long as the Switch 1 did, or even longer because this time it’s actually close enough in power for most companies to port games over via optimization (something we want so that they keep being forced to optimize their games for lower end PC as well, instead of every game eventually becoming MH Wilds levels of demanding nonsense).
I dunno I fully expect it to stick around that long. But with no Covid boost + significantly higher price of entry I can’t see it selling like Switch 1.
Man covid really was a big factor now that you mention it, animal crossing was insanely popular back then
They did well enough even before Covid and still make a good amount of sales, plus given this thing is only $100 bucks more, I can at least see parents selling their living room Switch to use the Switch 2, even if they absolutely wouldn’t buy multiple (1 for each of their kids).
You also have to consider that for a lot of casuals the Switch 1 graphics are just fine. They gonna think twice looking at that price.
I know I am and I’m an enthusiast that can afford it
$100 more in the US. It’s almost $200 more in Canada and other countries
Eh, it’s not the console price that bothers me, it’s mostly the game prices, and even then it’s apparently just them making their previous Japan-only variable prices the standard for all countries.
That’s actually true, most companies suck at converting currencies properly for their regional pricing.
Yeah of course, it’s still going to affect sales. When people consider the price of the console plus a couple games people will think twice.
There’s a sweet spot of a few hundred bucks that makes consoles easy stress free purchases for people.
There’s og switch lite was one of those. Switch 2 lite will come and ease that portion of the market but it’s still gonna be pricey in comparison
Either way nintendos brand is stronger than ever which will help them out a lot
That’s actually my main point for earlier though with the “you can literally get the console alone and just treat it as an effective Switch 1 Pro by basically playing Switch 1 games with free upgrades until you decide you want to get 1 or 2 Switch 2 games”.
So it’s still able to be looked at as “just spending $100 and selling their old console to upgrade to a more powerful version that will play their games better” instead of being a new console you have to buy new games for.
Honestly once the Switch 2 comes out the only games I NEED with it will be Bananza, Metroid prime 4 and MK world, none of the indies or 3rd party triple a games have really caught my interest as something I would buy on a Nintendo platform versus Steam. And those three games will probably get me through months of playtime.
And yeah aside from those titles I have a decent number of Switch 1 games I would love to play again on a new console at higher res or framerates. By the time I finish with those there will doutblessly be a bunch of new games that will grab my interest, and I will buy them and be set for another couple of months.
For sure though it's definitely an enthusiast way of looking at it. That was my plan a week or so ago until I started a new game of TotK and decided it looks good enough for me on my Switch Lite/Super5 OLED lol
Not paying $629 canadian for an IPS screen 😱
We have two Switches, OLED and then my kids use our "launch" Switch, which has been through hell... reshelled it and swapped the battery. It is hard to go from OLED to non-OLED on Switch.
Sounds so elitist, but it's true.
This is just what Yaba Sanshiro standalone does
its been awhile since i mesed with it, your telling me screen positioning in yaba isnt optional and it automatically pushes itself to the top?
so much switch talk. I thought i was in the wrong channel for a sec.
Yeah, it pushed the screen up to the top for some reason. It's kinda nice in a way with a horizontal handheld, but looks weird AF on a vertical one
There might be a way to change it in the setting though.
But by default, yeah, it's crammed up at the top
yeah, there is, that what everyone was suggesting to do lol, so it doesnt look goofy af
oh no I'm definitely not using yaba at all if I can't fix that lol
unless im misremembering, you can change it
I'll give it a whirl on my Cube tomorrow
Yet another L for Yaba
I tested Yaba Sanshiro on my RP5 (with the screen rotated) - I don't see a way to center the game on the screen.
Also this app is terrible. Why does it keep asking for permission to send me notifications? Definitely sticking with the Retroarch beetle core on my RP5. Hopefully beetle core works on the Classic
is the beetle core for saturn under active development? Yaba still seems to be developed at least, both standalone and libretro core.
I think beetle is pretty done/stable
It is low level emulation so you generally don’t need to be constantly fixing game specific bugs like with high level emulation
Mednafen’s last update was about a year ago
And beetle Saturn is mednafen’s saturn core as libretro
Anyone else concerned that the D-pad on this thing looks unnecessarily small?
yes it has enough space for bigger d-pad
Looks to be their standard dpad tbh
Looks to be the same dpad they always use. Its a good dpad imo.

A much better showcase. Almost too good…. That it seems fake? lol
I might end up buy another with 6-button layout
2x takes way less GPU power than 1080p that's for sure lmao
But still
That looks notably better than before
So it's either stretched or black bars all bottom for 4:3? 👀
Guardian heroes goat
Gimme that sweet radiant silvergun music too
Also person with normal size hands, makes the device look smaller than a laptop
Like the 6 button but think more generally the 4 button will be used
Definitely, I’ve beat it sooo many times
Alright that was a great demo, it’s running super well
It’s the same d-pad they’ve always used, and that thing was never too small whenever I used it on the RP4 Pro, RP Mini, or RP5.
Man that demo looks a lot better
Well that's good to hear, but it still looks smaller than it could or should be given the design and size of the device.
Not a fan of the dpad personally
Wish it was dish styled like sega controllers
As someone who owns several model 2 Saturn controllers and thinks it’s the goat….i actually really like retroids dpad.
I’m not sure how I’d feel about using a Sega rocker style dpad on a vertical when I think about it
I really don't mind the idea of a Vita D-pad on a retro device
Yep Vita dpad was small but incredible as well
It’s easy to see why they wouldn’t put a Sega rocker style dpad even on the Saturn model…it would look goofy af
Oh yeah Snake I should ask something completely unrelated
I'm after playing through the first 3 MGS games
But something that stuck out to me for my entire MGS1 playthrough was that there felt like a lot of input lag
Is that just part of the game or is it because of the Master Collection port?
Oh crazy i never felt that, were you emulating it?
Oh master collection
I like the master collection but yeah the mgs1 port isn’t great
Would emulation of it on a handheld be a better experience then?
Yeah definitely. Most people were recommending Duckstation then playing master collection mgs2 and 3
The game has no support for analogue movement, does it?
Yeah it does, full dual shock support
I got to use L2 and R2, but even with the stick, I was still locked to 8 directions
Though I prefer to play it with a dpad…I think I’m in the minority
Oh man I just looked it up, master collection has the analog controls misconfigurered 😆
Oh maybe they fixed it? Either way I’d use duckstation
Ah shit
Explains a lot though lol
The game is far from unplayable with the D-pad at least
Eyyy sega rally
Looks comfortable in hand
Cut on die hard after like 2 seconds
Honestly it was a pretty legit selection of games they showed off. Except for Bug, no one wants to play bug.
Prove me wrong 😆
Yup, helps when they’re only doing 2x and not scaling up to 1080p.
lol yeah it did not get enough screen time
That video is still using yaba
Need a real beetle test from somebody that isn’t retroid
Yeah I’m super critical of Yaba but it was still a good demo. Definitely keen on seeing beetle Saturn performance when reviewers get theirs next week
plot twist they didn't use yaba
or beetle
they used something newish called Saturn.emu, based on mednafen
Can that upscale though? I know Mednafen can’t
in the comments they mentioned it was at a 2x upscale
To be fair I was messing with Yabause on my iPad last night which Yaba Sanshiro is based off of and Yabause doesn’t support upscaling either
Yeah that’s my point. I’ve heard decent things about that emu you mentioned though
where's the source code for that one? the github link in the reddit post is dead
im not familiar with saturn emulation. what does beetle do that yaba dabba dont?
accuracy
saturn architecture is a bitch so some games don't run on inaccurate emulators
Better accuracy and performance, but it requires some definite power
yeah it's basically the difference between the RICE setups for n64 on a 3566 vs running ares n64
Was looking it up and someone did say that they .emu on their RG Cube and it's super close to full speed for most games
But that was like
If there was one thing i loved about the Vita
it was that dpad, that damn dpad. Mwah
GitHub was last updated 9 months ago, and I’m assuming the Play Store version is the same case? So I’d assume performance hasn’t changed
Would be great if it would be possible to to have a quickswitch between dpad and analog stick like the brick has
Have any of these companies ever tried the DualShock 2-3 approach where they use pressure sensitivity for analogue input?
if it has room to fit a tv console controller size dpad then why not
Well I think with dpads bigger isn’t necessarily better.
The Vita dpad is largely considered one of the finest ever made and it’s very small
Yeah it’s not a size thing so much as a feel
anyone here get the flip2+classic bundle, but looking more forward to the classic?
cause thats me
but maybe cause i already have a rp5
size does matter to me
Yeah I’m a bit more excited for the classic tbh
Hard to be excited for the flip 2 imo
It's more or less a known quantity since it's just the RP5 but in a new shell
Don’t get me wrong I’m excited for the flip 2
RP5 didn’t excite me in the slightest
same here, as i already had a pocket air. little did i know about snapdragon and its custom drivers....
These are my first retroids since the 2S
A good form factor is nice and I'm glad for there to be other form factors but generally a form factor swap isn't going to get me excited about anything
ive never had a problem with its ergo personally
I recently moved from playing Midnight Club 3 to Minecraft on it
Only real complain I have so far is the trigger stiffness makes it a bit awkward in Minecraft compared to the much looser rp4p triggers
speaking of 6 buttons, this looks interesting....

Featuring an octagonal gate analog stick, 6-button layout, fully equipped with microswitch buttons, analog slider pad for in game lobby navigation, and programmable rear buttons ...
I don’t know why people were so upset with the RP Mini screen. The Flip 2 lid design is the real controversy
Damn, really that bad huh
whens shipping? the 16th?
I almost was going to email and ask them for that
Decided to hold out for the mini refresh
i have the previous version of this. got it for fighting games, but the dpad didnt cut it. however, i really like it on my mister set up. works really well as an all in one device. can easily go from playing arcade, snes, n64, saturn, ps1, etc and always have a good layout
I'm glad you didn't ask!
this new one seems to have different dpad options, right analog stick, and wireless
the previous one had the right analog as well, but it was a slider. actually really liked that
ah i was thinking of a different one then
this new one has a real analog and a touchpad so thats nice
i wonder if you can use that on mister as a mouse for some mario paint action
Did they announce a date?
Not yet
They are probably seeing how people respond to the replacement kits first
Which btw can only be request for 5 more days until the 17th
It will serve as my daily reminder when it's flip 2 time.
I forgot who mentioned this but the magnetic latch on of the controllers may screw up hall effects
Giving it up for a fellow follower of Teal! Also wobbled quite a bit on the 6 button but the colorway won out.
no, I assume it will come a few months after the flip2/classic launch
By that point we’ll probably be priced out of it from tariffs
Damn
Not me, and not that anyone wants to get into this topic again as an outside observer I expect him to cave on the china trade war hard. us economy going to absolutely tank if it stays
imagine being american rn trying to buy literally anything lol.
Dark times
Im waiting patiently to see what the consensus is b4 ordering anything. but gonna be the same old price here anyways.
I love retroid devices but theres always something. with every release it seems'
3 had the 3+ controversy, flip had the hinge, 4/pro had the triggers, 5/mini had the mini screens, I can wait to see how the classic turns out. I want it to be good tho. their build quality is always great imho.
I gobbled up a 2s but thats been my only retroid until recently. I wanted a ice blue 3+, but the flip and 405m came out just before I pulled the trigger, then the 4 came out, from there the 556 came out, I didnt get any of those, but I did grab a odin 2 mini pro off the marketplace, and I had that until I sold it to pay for a flip2 and classic bundle which I can get hopefully before the tarrifs take effect.
hope so. sucks you guys are getting caught in the crossfire of everything.
Not so much a crossfire s as it’s an old man threatening to blow his kneecaps off unless he gets what he wants (which is that people don’t blow his kneecaps off) and everyone else checking to make sure he has ammo
I heard he was gonna send every us citizen an Ayaneo DMG with the money they’re collecting on tariffs
Na, we'll all get Palmer Luckey's Chromatic.
Interesting. Then I wonder will the pro controller 2 has hall stick.
It's just a theory I ran across, I'm equally sure Nintendo just doesn't give a f#@! and enjoys people picking up new controllers every so often when their traditional sticks go bonk
You mean Nintendo wants my money any way they can get it???
Nvm dude. It isn’t just Nintendo. Another example is the Dualsense Edge, SONY invented a stick module like they truly wanted to fix the problem. And it turned out being a new way to milk their fans. The RRP of each module is $20 and always out of stock. So people ended up have to pay around $30 - 60 dollars for an analogue stick.
Same reason I can’t justify myself to buy a PS Portal.
And keep in mind that the regular DualSense has even worse of a drifting issue due to it being their default option for including with PS5 consoles and its sticks are not user replaceable (at least, not without a lot of soldering), so the literal only option to immediately fix that thing, if you don’t want to wait for shipping it to Sony and back, is to straight up just buy a new one.
Exactly. My first DualSense failed in less than twelve months.
I don't really have any drifting issues with my dual shocks (2 DS1, 3 DS2, 2 DS4, 1 dualsense).
I did have some issues with the stick for one of heavily used dualshock 2 but I don't think the problem is "drifting".
Only has the dualsense for around 2 months, lightly used so ... 🙏
Same for 2 Xbox ones (one 360, one latest series model).

It's been quiet in here. Have we got confirmation of review units being shipped yet? I'm really hyped for impressions and more info on the SoC this week
Havent heard anything, but retail is shipping out Weds, so presumably theyve been shipped already, if not tomorrow
Yeah I was super hyped about Wednesday until I reread Chris’ message saying they planned on having all preorders shipped out by May 2.
I ordered mine fairly late so I assume I have a couple weeks yet
So impressions later this week still I assume at least
I would GUESS that theyd ship out all preorders by end of this week if not early next week, May 2 is probably a cover for themselves
I ordered within the first minute or two of it going live, so hoping it ships wednesday, and im in nyc, so usually shipping is super fast once it actually leaves china
Yeah I was also thinking that it may matter less when you ordered it and will depend on the colorway chosen. Since I imagine they are making them in batches and shipping as they are ready
Yea that sounds right
Seems like teal was the winner
Yeah these are coming hot off the assembly line if they haven’t sent out review units
lol I hope so 😅 which one did you order again?
Retro gray. when theres too many options, i always get the basic one, I just couldnt decide lol
But the clear purple wouldve been the nostalgic one for me to get
Seems like they are really showing off the 6 button, maybe that will be the winner
Yeah for me it was purple vs teal (once I decided against 6 button)
So hyped to play retro games on this beautiful OLED
Were all guinea pigs lol
Hopefully there’s nothing major wrong with it. I watched RGC flip 2 review and he said it’s super loud under load.
I hope the fans are quiet on this.
Didnt realize it had a fan
Ah yeah I should have said the fan not the fans lol
I wasnt making a pun, legit didnt know lol
Yep it’s actively cooled
I’m sure they will be inaudible playing og game boy at least 😅
Ive been yoloing handhelds before these new tarrifs kick in, just heard about the new R36XX/R36Plus and now looking into it
"The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 Gaming Platform is designed for cloud gaming on fanless, dedicated handheld gaming devices."
Interestingly the qualcomm page says that it's meant for fanless devices.
I want the powkiddy rgb50
Going through the spreadsheet now lol
We really are guinea pigs lol
My cope/head canon is they added the fan so that it could comfortably run beetle saturn
Is any of this actually tested, or do they just pick a chip thats unreleased, build around it, and hope it runs saturn?
after that original saturn demo video I think the latter
Time will tell I guess
Russ will probably get his first based on proximity
I wonder if the chip is designed to be passively cooled if some people could disable the fan with no issues. like if you were going to play mostly lower end systems it might be okay for a nice battery life boost
oh yeah hawaii
Its got a really big battery doesnt it?
yep
I guess I should have also said to keep it totally silent
given the flip 2 is noisy
Can that be fixed with a patch from retroid?
maybe a different fan curve. though they can't change the fan they used obviously
Right lol
Id get a 6 down the road for sure. Especially if all the other hardware works out
What other use cases are there for the 6 button besides saturn?
I like the spread of 3 equally sized buttons for Genesis too. And it'd be nice for remapping them for functions on pretty much any Gameboy and nes
The only time it's weird is for SNES, PS and the later non Saturn systems. Just cause of the layout and diff button sizes. Still def doable but it'd bother me occasionally
Yea makes sense, its nice to have the extra buttons for remapping, but yea it might bother me too
Curious to see how far I can get in a switch game lol
Honestly if they had done 4 normal sized buttons and 2 smaller or 6 normal sized buttons in the normal cross layout that would have been perfect for me. But I also rarely play anything saturn
N64 (no stick tho…), arcade, Genesis, some PC engine games (they had both a 2 button and a 6 button controller)
Two extra buttons can be handy for ms-dos
Honestly some n64 games aren’t too bad played with a dpad
I don’t think it’ll make or break your quest64 run
I'm gonna play some wave race and world driver championship on this for sure
Fighting games. I’m going to load it up with all the Street Fighter, Capcom Vs and Mortal Kombat games that it can run.
Man stick in this would prob make it an endgame device for me
soul calibur, dead or alive 2 and capcom vs snk 2
I have a bunch of ms dos games I want to play, but I always give up after like a minute, just too difficult for me to figure out
though I'll play those on my 4 button
Soul caliber is great
oh yeah. though I'm not sure if I prefer it or doa2 overall
Chris won’t answer if 4gb and 6gb options will go out to reviewers, so def not preordering something I have no idea how it will perform
Thats a fair take for sure, but tbf its only about 8% more for the improved ram and storage
But if it makes the difference between saturn and no saturn thats kind of a big deal. Especially on the 6 button version
I think the gamble is pay the 10 extra bucks now, than wait and it arrives post tarrifs
Totally get it though
I sprung for the 6gb version only for the increased storage, the price difference was basically the cost of a 128gb micro SD so the RAM increase is just an added bonus
I’m buying a RG-Arc with a nicer screen, any performance improvements on top of it are welcome but nothing necessary for me
6 button is also nice for n64. It maps to A, B, and the c-hat nicely. Just wish it had a single stick like the 40XXv.
I flip flopped HARD on the 6 button. But I remember when I was young I tried playing a modern 4 button game on a 6 button and I fuckin' HATED it. As much as I'd like the Classic to be a Sega only device, I just don't have the scratch to do have a one trick pony like that in my arsenal.
I've got the Trim UI Brick for travel, the flip 2 for longer sessions and travel, and the Classic that will be the bed-side vertical for longer play on the brick. I think for the games I'm playing on it, it'll equal the Pocket DMG at friggin less than 1/4th the cost.
Sorry, nicer screen? Isn't the RG-Arc a 640 by 480 LCD?
I need more RP Classic content
This is me. I have an 8bit m30 controller and i sat down with it on the mister to play some classic non sega games. I hated it. In SNES and PS1, i'm often pressing Y/Square and B/X. the mismatched size between the top and bottom row is annoying. Playing mega man x and having to hold the X on the m30 (Y on nintendo 4 button), then trying to hit the sega B to dash, is just not something i want to do a lot
yeah it's pretty mediocre sadly
I think he meant the classic is the better rg arc for him

I love Adin's stuff but this doesn't have any new info in it.
I get that the retro colorway looks the most balanced, but I think going for one of these colorways is a rare opportunity - a great piece of kit that is much more bold than other variants. Can't wait for the teal version to come in.
The race to review stuff first has finally led to reviewing handhelds nobody has even touched yet
all that is missing is the voiceover being made from an AI generator
I am trying to convince myself to get RP Classic especially when the bundle discount with RP Flip 2 is still active. But I have RG40XXV which seems to overlap with most things everything RP Classic does. Of course the aesthetic and OLED screens are still huge pluses.
Since RP Classic has the same screen as Ayaneo Pocket DMG, I guess people already know the experience of running different aspect ratio games on this screen. What kind of systems run well here?
GB/GBC, Pico-8, NES and SNES have the closet aspect ratio to the screen. But NES/SNES do not integer scale close to full screen. How does non-integer scaling plus shaders look like?
I know convincing myself to buy more things is a weird concept
You won’t be running real pico 8 on this, the chip has no linux support
Maybe you could set something up via winlator but that feels like a lot of hoops
no shade at pico-8 but i lost interest in that after a few days with my rgb30, maybe i am missing something?
Gotta find games you like
Like pico 8 suika or Celeste
Just treat it like any other retro console
I’d recommend going on itch and searching for pico 8 games
perhaps, already played pico-celeste.... wanna try celeste 64
I'm hoping this chipset becomes popular enough that we'll see Rocknix on it like the Flip/5
A lot of the mainline work on the sd865 was already done before the rp5 was even teased - because it’s an older mainline snapdragon, not a brand new never before seen niche “gaming” one
And retroid themselves provided some sources
Yeah, I'm hoping these new SD chips become the mainline; fingers crossed that unlike the SD865 compared to the S8G1, that all three variants of G2 have the same assembly hooks that if they do the work for SD2G2 or SD3G2 that SDG1 is mostly covered.
I think each of the G chips are just modified versions of other snapdragons - like the g1g2 appears to be a modified s4g2 so maybe if the s4g2 goes mainline the g1g2 could follow
But I don’t think anyone has linux booting on an s4g2
Is the screen ratio 31:27? I have never seen this, what is the benefit over traditional ones like 4:3 or 3:2?
It can fit GB/C and S/NES 8:7 content beautifully with an unnoticeable amount of overscan. The resolution is high enough to get a huge integer scale of GBA
I'd look at the pocket DMG reviews for details on the screen - with the pixel density integer scaling is only for people with very specific wants/needs IMO
It sounds like we are trying to fit all the ratio but taking a step back from 1:1
The ratio is not by design. It’s because the screens are from old LG wing phone.
That’s the whole reason for the RP Mini screen fiasco
If they could custom make their screens they would probably make 4:3
Integer scaling for 320x240 with overscan
Hope this can surprise me, the Ayaneo Pocket DMG is too expensive, this is 1/3 of that 🙂
Not sure if winlator counts as "real". Assuming it runs well enough in it
For the games I play, it's fine on the rp5 and I'm hoping to get a similar experience from the RP classic
Yeah, the DMG is kind of the ultimate vert handheld.... But I ain't playing PS2+ games on a vert (even if it did have a single stick like the DMG) so don't need that processor. So the DMG's strength beyond the processor and form factor is almost entirely the screen which this has the same panel on.
I think it has the potential to be just as good as the DMG in almost all relevant aspects but 1/4th to 1/5th the cost. I know you can get the base model of the DMG at 419 USD (still, that's absurd), but if you're paying that much for such a powerful android device, you'd be daft not to bump it up to a 12GB version or higher as I'd rely on the DMG to console to a TV where I wouldn't expect that from the Classic.
Weird aspect ratio screens work surprisingly well for this use case, to the point where I’d assume these handheld companies are able to get them at discount because what else would you want to use a screen like this for. Prime example is the RG552 and its custom 5:3 screen.
Oof, this video was rough. Got some spec info wrong, and video out is a no go.
Yeah he missed the deets on no vid out for SD1G1
100% agree about the stick, at least a variant with one. I know I sound like a broken record, but a budget ayaneo pocket dmg would be amazing
Curious is it possible (and enjoyable) to play n64 game such as OoT and Mario without analog stick?
Its def playable
Enjoyable is subjective
I’m hoping Ship of Harkinian android port runs well.
Im ready to test everthing day one, alien isolation and san andreas lol
I already have my sd card ready too with switch and gamecube
Just forgot how time consuming android is to set up
I am a bit curious why someone would go for a device like this while intending to play games focused around an analog stick
Yes!!! Also Tetris Worlds on N64, Yoshi’s Story.
I wouldnt say intent is the right word, just massive potential for bonus stuff
I saw similar with the Anbernic SP, but at least in that case, the relatively unique form factor was a reason
Forgot how long android takes to set up, I wish there was like an emudeck type thing for it
Because tinkering is half the battle!
It's not necessariky just your message but like a sentiment I've seen a lot of
Seeing a lot of questions about n64, GameCube, ps2, and even up to 3ds and switch questions on it and it just feels odd to me to want to get something like this for that
I will legit try to load secret console games on this thing! 🤙
The actual want is a budget minded pocket dmg, but the specs of this thing make it seem overkill to just play gameboy and genesis on
Like theres so much potential
I know you cant play a modern fps on it with the lack of 2 sticks, but maybe some other stuff will be fine
Same and I think that once I’m done messing around that is what I’ll have, my end-game Gameboy.
But loading up the D-Pad rom hacks of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks may be my 1st playthroughs on the Classic.
I mean there's a lot of stuff to play on it but even if one were limiting to 8-16bit games, shaders and more accurate emulators can be reasons for a more powerful chip
Not to say you can't go for higher end systems. I'm just talking more about when it seems people are getting it for those systems in particular
I get what youre saying, its not like getting it FOR those specific things if that makes sense, just bonus potential
Or saying they want it for GameCube and saying it should have had sticks because they are getting it for GameCube or something like that
Similar to the Anbernic sp and a lot of feedback saying it should have had sticks for n64 and dreamcast or whatever
They couldve put a cheaper chip in this since its not needed I guess if you dont want to play stick consoles
Just gives this vibe sometimes that it feels like a number of loud people (no idea how numerous) seem to wish every device to be an everything device in the sense that it should be able to do everything
Good for shaders, accurate emulators, and native android stuff.
Yea fair enough
It is strange to me how often it feels like at least online so much time is spent on things a device can barely run vs what it does well. Maybe there's just more to discuss on the edge
If you want clicks you gotta load BOTW running at 5fps.
Even if we take the classic, despite most of the ones being 4 button, I feel like 90% of the conversation in the server has just been about Saturn
I'm not saying this is bad. Just strange
Makes sense, my guess is saturn will run just fine based on them making a 6 button, but im just speculating, its not based on any info
They did a demo recently for it
Yea but didnt they mess with upscaling?
Original used the default settings according to them which was a 1080p upscale that lagged it. Second demo video used 2x instead
Just checked my receipt, after upgrading to dhl, its $174, wondering now if I shouldve gotten a different device alltogehter for that price
Maybe, though there isn’t really anything comparable at the price.
Going to be hard to go back to budget verticals after using the OLED on this. Even if I think Linux is a better fit for the kind of games most will be playing on this
I'll be setting it up via winlator, cause why not, just one more platform to play and theres a few fun shooters. but yeah its not a dealbreaker for me either. its nice to have, but if it didn't it wouldn't affect my perception or decision making in any way
Yea theres really not much, I still have a brick and mm+, but the power of this thing is great, only other vert in a comprable price point is the 405 and 406, but theyre huge
Back when I had an odin 2, I set up winlator, it was a huge pain, but I guess it did work
I was going to sell it to buy the portal, but at that point I realized it was about the same to just get a steam deck, so I went that route
all this talk about chip overkill for what this plays well, this is such a big selling point for me. The only current device with this screen that plays cave tate mode games well is the rg cube. while i like that device, this one has oled and will be more pocketable. if it was just another weak handheld with an oled square screen, like an upgraded rgb30, id personally have no interest
but you only set it up once. its not like you have to do it every time you play
Yea for sure
But have to do it for each game
i only meant to mention it in relation to pico8 since that was brought up as something missing from being an android only device
i dont know what else i would use winlator for on this
It was pretty straightforward when i did it on the RP5. At least in terms of Winlator. Just installing the app, copying the game files over, and changing a couple of settings (that aren't really required to just work)

Like this guide video on it is only 8 minutes
i was going to say that too, but thought that some people find anything other than tapping an apk is too much work
Not really much more work than a typical emulator setup on Android
I remember having to mess with a bunch of settings for each individual game
At least for me, I don’t care about power since I have the Odin 2 Mini. I’m sold solely on the OLED, hi-res screen compared to everything else on the market.
But Im the outlier
For pico 8 in Winlator?
Winlator in general does take time to work on stuff definitely. But Pico-8 doesn't take tinkering
No just regular games, never had pico 8 set up on it
Gotcha. Yeah there's settings to change to make it better but it works by default in Winlator
Settings changes that help are things like the winlator resolution to save on resources and changing an option to stop screen tearing. It's really simple
I want overkill, it makes a difference compared to low end chips barely puttering along but running well enough to be considered playable.
i have more powerful devices too, like an odin 2. but for me this will be my new edc, replacing the brick. i def want to be able to take some cave shmups on the go. those are my comfort games and not being able to play the later releases sucks
I had the same impression of it usurping the brick for edc, but after seeing the video of it in hand, im a bit more skeptcal now
that woman in the video has the tiniest hands lol
Yea fair enough
it is not a small device, but i think the bump on the back will actually make it slide in and out of the pocket really easily compared to a totally square device of the same size
like the 34xx is very pocketable despite the size cause of the wedge shape
just has to be good enough to be back pocketable
not related to ergonomics, but applies to being an edc device, also love that its android so i can keep it on the entire time so its always syncing via syncthing
with a device running muos, knulli, or another linux OS, i have to turn it on and make sure my saves synced before leaving. no need to worry about that on android
I’d much prefer Linux on this personally.
What frontend are you going to use with this?
Es-de, used it before and liked it
