#Anbernic RG34XXSP
1 messages · Page 6 of 1
I did a test on 240p suite and noticed no issues either, usually this highlights it
I guess they at least did it "properly" unlike retroid. But jesus
whats the full resolution?
If we're talking x4 integer scaling, wouldn't 6 pixels trim take at least one of the GBA pixels on each side
I'm putting this to bed, it looks fine
The panel name in the dtb is not always indicative of the actual panel
e.g the 406h still references the cube 720x720 panel lol
apologies for the non-scientific pictures.
But looking at both top right or bottom left corner, it looks pixel-to-pixel accurate with a screenshot taken directly from PC emulator, I see zero sign of overscan or trimming
Right, back to development
The Anbernic RG34XXSP sits in a strange position where it's nearly perfect for two different use cases: it's an excellent GBA-centric machine in many respects, and also very close to being a great all-around emulation handheld too. But it also has enough strange design choices that prevent it from being ideal in either case. Here are my first i...
So however this panel is set up or what other resolution it may or may not be capable of in future handhelds in this one it runs 720x480 perfectly.
Thanks Gamma
Byeeee Dj Khaled I hope you are doing well
Wouldn’t be the first time
The image would just be stretched. You might like how it looks, you might not but it’s easy to change either way
Thank you
Just leaving this here for reference. 1x scale GBA will expose any interpolation going on, I don't see that happening here.
Woooo
That's cool, thanks for all the work!
Also tested genesis at 1x to be sure
so its looking more likely that it is a 720x480 panel, and the same panel manufacturer may also be building a 3.5in 960p panel that will use the same screen controller.
Honestly how the fuck anbernic does that
Excuse my language
How the hell how the helly how the maxy how the anbernic
Ermmm what the anbernic
Disappointing that Phawx would drop this kind of bomb without providing more evidence and letting us scramble to make sense of it tbh...
He had good theories and it's weird that the panel's full size is 4:3 but it's not like some parts of his theory were difficult to prove if true.
The overscan + trim theory would be easy-ish to prove with a comparison.
What Gamma has shown with his microscope is pretty much a confirmation the screen is accurate.
And if somehow Anbernic pulled some magic and this is not an integer scaling screen:
- Wtf is that actual screen's ppi and what is it doing in a $60 handheld
- If we can't notice it under a microscope, nobody would notice playing anyway
To be honest he wasn't totally wrong but we are glad it's not bad like the screen have issues
Anbernic is Anbernic
I'm now wondering if the 4:3 base is just a cost saving for whoever made this screen in the case that it's actually a custom 3:2 720p screen
I think that's what Max is alluding to
I don't quite follow, Gaspacho
I mean... I don't know. He's claiming he found out it's a 1280x960 panel pretty confidently and that they're doing some weird scaling
He's certainly not responsible for the pitchfork response of some users though lol...
People are getting a little heated. The device is doing exactly what Anbernic advertised. The only thing I could complain about is that we could have had a handheld that is good for more than just GBA. It's a wierd move, but again, people are getting exactly what it says on the tin.
Most of the individuals I have seen losing their shit about this are already the type to love flying off the handle lol
Me tho I love it with phawx explanation and gamma testing evidence I love it
My theory is that the only reason why it’s working this well is because it’s stretching a smaller image to a larger resolution, unlike the Mini which was taking a larger image and crunching it to fit a smaller resolution.
I... don't think it works that way? You'd see artifacts regardless.
The trick is not trying to use more pixels than you actually have
^
Gamma has already posted some really good pictures/footage that there is no sign of interpolation
That's what really boned retroid
You would if you noticed them, but it’s arguably way more difficult to notice those than it would be to notice the artifacts in outputting a larger screen to a smaller resolution.
Non square pixels and trying to use an impossible resolution for the screen is what fucked up the rpmini
Tldr for today?
Anbernics are square and possible
Why wouldn’t they just use it as 3.5 if the resolution is high enough anyway
Rpmini screen issue but not fucked
Anbernic is really joker dark times
I wonder if the screen could be used for other 3.5 devices
We need someone with a microscope to count every damn pixel
Skimmed
Anbernic even eats non integer scaling lunch and does it better. They really can't help 1uping other company lol
Anything non-integer is getting stretched to some extent, though? Someone do the Mega Man test and a magnifying glass.
Retroid somehow still lost
That’s the anbernic business model
Crazy how they hit retroid with a shot fired at the miyoo mini lol
Anbernic used a 1280x960 screen, and then crunched it down to output 720x480 onto a 1280x854 “screen”.
ZPG died for this
Rest in peace ZPG
Anbernic right now
In other words, they fucked up a device by trying to be sneaky instead of just selling it to us as the 3.5” 1280x960 screen.
3.5 1280x960?
Anbernic pulled an RP mini but actually made it work
Yeah, that’s the actual screen specs.
You see how dark this is
Dude, are you choosing on purpose to not read what others have discovered in this thread already
Now I want this screen on the R36S 🤣
Lol skimming people seem like they'll be more chill in this instance
Wait what? What happened there then?
He can’t see past his anbernic hate boner
Gamma has run that screen under a microscope, it's an accurate 720p 3:2 screen
Apparently not since it looks like I skimmed it.
how on earth did anbernic interpolate gba to look pixel perfect on this screen? and if so, why is that not available to people as a shader? like that would be insane
Oh shit
Links gaspacho
…So then wtf was the 1280x960?
this message
Bro scroll up 😭
Because anbernic their ye is different
They got balls to do it
Anbernic all day in the lower market eating peoples lunch
and pictures here
Innit even rg35xxsp destroyed last year
so phawx was fake news 🤔
Destroyed
Just like me fr
Why sub to Netflix when #1095014087232077935 is free
Even miyoo flip v1 and v2 wasn't pulling those numbers
Damn so the 34xx really is 720 horizontal
When if they actually do rg slide watch and learn how the device would move
gamma did that
I suppose so, and yeah, honestly that’s good news at least.
You think it was warriors 2016-2017
Even without a microscope, it's easy to debunk Phawx's theory.
His theory relies on an overscan then 6 pixel crop on each side of the width.
He says it's a cropped 1292 screen.
Ok, 6 pixel is 0.46+% of a 1292 width (6 / 1292 * 100)
0.46% of the original GBA width (240) is 1.1 pixel.
This means that if we're cropping 6 pixels on each side of the width of a 1280 screen like Phawx is saying, we're missing more than 1 chonky GBA pixels on each side of the width.
It's dead easy to test, just launch any game with a background and see if a GBA pixel is missing on either side. I tried and neither is missing, I'm getting the full image
Max Zhou reading the retrohandhelds article be like: Did we really do that shit?
The thing I still find weird is that Russ straight up found out that his 34XX has the display centered, as opposed to the 34XX SP having the display along the bottom of the panel.
Max knows what he is doing lmao
I like the other one better really 🤣
display mounted on the front glass differently in each revision?
No more 960p screen 😕
or it could be a 720x540 display partially covered and used as 720x480
Fun while it lasted
He’s just as surprised as anyone that they used a 3.5 screen
but yeah I think phawx jumped the gun on this without actually checking the pixels
because the screen is in fact 480p
So unless they’re 2 different panels, or they’re the same panel with really weird frames, it might legit still just be 720x540.
I'm sure Max Zhou planted the data about 960p screen just to fuck with Retroid (and remind everyone about RP MIni fiasco)
😄
+1 something he would actually do that guy is petty as fuck hahahaha
Maybe?
"Don't buy ZPG Unicorn buy Rg cube " classic words 🤭
but yeah the pitchforks definitely came out too early here I think lol
retroid still alone in the fake res shame box lol
well, and miyoo
but they kinda sorta fixed it later
V10 has a lesser res
Lmaooo
Honestly, I’m just glad to be wrong since I’d rather that situation just flat out not be repeated regardless.
I remember like it was yesterday
Realized that 2 seconds after I posted.
Anbernic fixed their scaling issues IN the same device!? My god, they really did do the stunner on retroid /s
I actually feel bad for ZPG it was so dark that anbernic did that
Max brady
Anbernic brady
Anbernic wins again
Anbernic when another company tries something new
jokes aside I hope the phawx and RGC don't get tarred and feathered here
Rgc shouldn't
Now Anbernic, give us a RG34XXSP Classic pls (no sticks)
Phawx, likely won't. Realistically only retroid fans go ape shit over these things
I just want an arc pro with a chip actually capable of saturn and a higher res screen
Phawx made me think of the possibilities 🤣
honestly more concerned about anbernic blacklisting them than fans turning on them tbh
Ah I suppose that's more fair
Nah they blessed 🙌
With ZPG Unicorn its different they are extra petty towards Lao Zhang because he copied their rg3566 dtb or sth
fans I expect will still be confidently claiming the 34xx screen is fake based on accusations that were disproven within a day months ago in reddit threads for years
Has there ever been someone that has been blacklisted by anbernic though
Even bad press is press
Joey
Taki Udon
Oh yea lol
And taki
they stopped sending him units for asking why he was getting his review units weeks after the americans lol
so after all the drama the rg34xx line of devices might actually be a true 720x480?
Joey And taki = Roman Reigns and Cm Punk
yeah it's true 720x480, so the mystery of why it's shaped like that continues
Chaos Canada and Taki I made that shit
highly likely and if it isn't it's still impossible to tell that it's not a 720x480 under the microscope
it might be 720x540 and not using the whole panel or it might just need a big front glass for how it's wired/driven
For this I’ll actually give them the apology for thinking they’d pull something like that.
…I’m still not going to consider them in any way a good company for all their quality control nonsense, but I’ll at least recognize that they haven’t done anything intentionally malicious on the hardware side of things.
yeah I was suspicious when it looked that good under a microscope
perfect interpolation is physically impossible
I wonder if 960p mode is not left so it can actually accept it as an input or something, the screen was supposed to be used in projectors after all
I was questioning everything as to how a 1.78x scale could look so good when non-integer scaling normally makes my eyes bleed on anything less than 1440p lmao
respect
I swear, right now I feel like Marge in that one moment.
and the answer is that it is integer scaled, nothing to see here lol
ready to do my own apology when the plot twist gets plot twitsted again lol
Wow what a apology
Fwiw, I hated the miyoo flip for the dual sticks, but something about this one hits a little better after seeing people get in person units
hmm. in that case it's still be be decided if it's actually a 720 by 540 screen in case it's 4:3
Not the hinge huh
You'd have to be unhinged to buy it now. Pun intended
You know so funny I know anbernic build quality control is mid but their screen been their master magic idk how they does it
I mean, can you blame the guy who had to spend 2 months arguing with Anbernic customer support over the Cube? On top of being one of the people who had the V1 405M and had both issues occur (the shoulder button and the screen adhesive both being shit)?
The miyoo flap/flop? 🤣
Hell no I will never blame you
Honestly I would be the same
As well as my 40XX H having all the left controls stop working until I soldered a new ribbon connector for that daughter board?
You can remove sections of a video no? I feel like that would be best for anyone reporting the screen as wrong
Or add a disclaimer annotation 🤣
So the conclusion is that it’s 4:3 but the 3:2 area indeed has 720x480 resolution? So the whole screen is 720x540? It’s a very uncommon resolution
Basically that
And literally almost all my XX devices having some type of annoying hardware flaw (35XX+ and 35XX H both had the shitty RTC clock oscillators, the 28xx, SP, CubeXX, and 34XX all had that shit power button issue that made it so you needed to hold the button for over 5 seconds to turn them on)? The sole exception being the RG40XX V.
it’s still a 3.5 inch then?
But now it's making me think how the fuck they are going to do 4'7 inch 960p 120hz screen @muted vessel thoughts
Yup, assuming the panel we’re looking at is accurate.
Great still 720p 3.5 is nice I want one on a cheaper handheld
Like, I’m absolutely willing to admit I was fully in the wrong for jumping the gun on the SP, but it sure as shit doesn’t somehow make all of this null and void.
This could've been good for like ALL the retro consoles if they kept the whole screen lol
FYI for everyone, added a pinned comment in my video:
Update: according to Anbernic, the screen is indeed a 3:2 720x480 display, that has a custom frame/shroud that is 4:3 in dimensions, to fit the housing. So it may be that Phawx's findings in the software is incorrect data being outputted by the hardware (which is common, these devices are full of all sorts of slapped-together errors). My big takeaway still stands: it has the space for a 4:3 display, and that would have been a better fit for playing 4:3 content with those new analog sticks. At the very least, if it is a custom frame for the 3:2 display, centering it in the housing would have looked a lot better than this weird top forehead that we have going on right now! Thanks for coming to my TED Talk
I'd still bet it's just a custom 720x480 panel slapped on a leftover/reused module
oh
I guess we can technically still blame Retroid for this 'nam flashback moment
I think it's only "case dismissed" if we take Anbernic at their word, which is not something I tend to do 😄
I feel vindicated for buying the 40XXV then
I feel vindicated in buying the 34xxsp
I'm thankful the 1280x960 thing was wrong
I'm not
1280 would be awesome tho
Gamma just did investigation if you will scroll above and he confirms it displays native res
Happy this isn’t another retroid shit show , sad cuz 1280x960 isn’t real
^
we also have Gamma who's ran the display under a microscope and some test screens.
linking to his images again.
We should probably pin this
🤭🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Big
Hehe
yeah, sure thing RetroidGameCorps /s /jk
The pixels are paid actors
lmao
Hahahaha
Anbernic no
I mean anbernic isn't going to blatantly lie to you like you would expect from retroid nowadays. /S???? Lol
I'm over the h700 handhelds anyway give whatever that helegaly thing has
Moving forward anytime a device has a big ole bezel, I'm going to be screaming that there's a screen underneath it and nobody better call me a conspiracy theorist
I’ll blame them both. Retroid for doing it in the first place and making it a real worry from then on, and Anbernic for making it ridiculously easy for me to believe they would do it thanks to them being so utterly willing to lie in incidents like the Cube.
(There we go, don’t know why it replied to the wrong comment).
Somehow I just assumed you were American lol
I was not expecting the Glasgow accent
Wild to see retroid mini round 2
It’s not
everyone who uses discord is an american, gamma is just faking it
Scottish Dj Khaled
Oh?
False alarm
What's the verdict?
Brazilians are americans
Ah
Must be exhausting to keep doing the accent all the time eh gamma?
They got away with murder not guilty
He likes peaky blinders so it’s fine
lol that's actually what people did in this chat as soon as they revealed the 5head bezel marketing footage
Gamma confirmed its 720x480, and the only potential weirdness is that it might be 720x540 if what Russ found in the regular 34XX has anything to say.
I just hopped on and saw a bunch of "it's not the advertised screen" and then saw people mentioning 1280x960 and got really confused lol
I can imagine how gamma said we are best eh in his accent 🤣🤣🤣
Wait what
I have never watched Peaky Blinders
Is there a Scottish gang in it
What
Maybe if we do that, we can successfully convince them it’s not worthwhile to ever cover parts of the screen.
I know the show takes place in Birmingham though
You never watch Peaky Blinders
Nay
That’s just wrong tho
Bonkers
That's my frustration, if there's room for the entire screen, give us the entire freakin screen man, it's not hard
It seems like people who were sad the display was 3:2 are still sad, and people who liked it have nothing to worry about because the scaling is pixel perfect.
So, seems like a nothingburger. If you didn't like the screen ratio before you definitely don't now, and if you do like the display then this doesn't matter. Or at least that's my perspective lol
Funny that this resolved by a morning cup of coffee all things considered
Nah, the biggest reason why I was pissed about the RP Mini by the end of all the news is directly because they could’ve avoided it all from the start by selling it as the proper LG Wing screen and I’d have outright been more interested.
Bezels are a relic of the 2010s
I still want that 960p sp
Just 4.7 inches
3:2 with no black bars is awesome.
Plenty of great 4:3 devices out there.
I just want to play pokemon romhacks and pretend I'm playing on og hardware
They were irish so same gaelic roots
Nah bezels can add to an aesthetic
If a company actively is hiding parts of the screen to pretend it’s a different one, they literally only have themselves to blame for whatever complaints or controversies occur from there.
Look at the RP2S
What about a 3:2 dual screen clamshell 😍
nobody would complain if they would have put in the effort to revisit the screen by moving the active area up by a bit and skipped the sticks tho
Best device retroid has released. Mini V2 has potential but wildly I find the ergos on the rp2s better
5:3 top screen or bust
Yes, and I’d vastly prefer the bezel be the screen itself so that I can customize it however I wish and whatever text I want.
I can't argue with that
In fact I would reverse-complain. Don't really remember what it's called anymore.
If they have the room for enough screen for me to have “Gameboy Advance SP” text underneath the game, I want that extra screen.
Be happy?
There should be more variety in clamshells across the board
Which thankfully we're starting to see this year
Preach it
Like I said.. if you were into the device before the theory, not much has changed for you to not want it after. Just internet finding reasons to be upset
I want a clam shaped clamshell
Still waiting for a worthwhile 2S successor
careful now, that's how you end up content with your collection and stop buying more devices
The RP2S was a steal at $80, shame it isn't a thing these days
Well, I do still prefer the RP Mini over the 2S, but I won’t lie that the ergo bumps arguably shouldn’t even be there with how little they actually do for the device.
Would still be the best sub 100$ device
Yeah and still better than the A527 iirc

Basically, I’d rather they have gotten rid of the ergo bumps to make it a way more literally rounded RP2S.
I doubt we'll see anything faster than the T618 under $100 until next year at least
Rp classic sp (with joysticks) would be endgame edc for me I think
yeah, would be fun if it actually had an active area of 720x540
There’s a budget t620 in the works…
The one with the messed up scaling?
I just want to confirm the size of the image for a GBA game will be bigger on the 34xx vs the 35xx?
/s.
I hadn't heard, which one is that
Yeah, it’s looking to be nice given it’s gonna have the same 720x480 screen I like in the 34XX, but with 2GB RAM for more port support.
same size, but integer scaled on the 34xx
Anbernic stays winning
It’s unannounce so…

And it’ll have sticks so that the 2GB isn’t wasted on a device that can’t play ports.
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of the t618 anyway, no linux/portmaster support
Hopefully they do better with quality control so that I’m not stuck with the same shit power button my 34XX has.
Anbernic best in the game obviously (jk I don't really care, also AYN top dog ez)
A527 is a great compromise between software support, price, and performance
…Ok, so I guess Sniffer wants to mess with Superbottle now.
Honestly $60 just doesn't cover the costs of testing every individual unit extensively, if a manufacturer tells you they're doing it at this price point I'd be pretty skeptical anyways. I just accept the chance of a lemon with these
Yeah @ebon dock you suck
Am I the only one who doesn't care in the slightest about power buttons as long as they work when you press them
Yeah, that’s why I care.
Jokes aside I have loved most of anbernics stuff lately. Even with the onslaught of devices I mostly thought, yeah that looks good. The 40xxv still might be the prettiest device I've seen in this space
Take ur smelly Ayn garbage elsewhere
Oh is yours defective?
Best power button is a device with a battery door
me who just got literal e-waste in today and it's good enough to play games on still
you play games?
My 34XX doesn’t turn on if you press it the first time no matter how long you hold it, and then when you press it a second time, whether or not it turns on depends on how long you held it total for both (if I tap it ones and then hold it for 10 seconds, it works. If I held it for more 10 seconds or even more the first time then it works with just tapping it for the second time).
I'd be surprised if any of us play games
🙏
yeah I whooped Ridleys ass two times today on the R36plus and R46S
You bought a retroid flip 2 🫵😆😆😆
It regardless already takes holding it for 10 seconds or more for it to turn on, and then it adds an extra bit of confusing nonsense in that it requires pressing it twice.
That's crazy
I thought we just test games if they run on the e-waste
Yeah I’m selling it
Guess you get what you pay for unfortunately
Really? I thought you liked it?
I was planning on selling my classic shortly after I took it out of the box
gotta test the buttons and fix the horrid pre-set, the r36plus literally had bezels for SNES displayed while EVERYTHING is at full screen instead of core provided
I’m frankly more surprised by the Flip 2. With the Classic, Sniffer at least was already saying they didn’t like it much when they first got it.
Meanwhile with the Flip 2 they were actually one of the people recommending it to others.
The year is 2030. Anbernic has launched the RG45XX H. It has Nintendo-switch style sticks, and uses the Allwinner H700 chipset, which can handle everything up to PS1, with some N64, PSP, and Dreamcast.
Yeah I mean any reason you ended up not liking em?
which would be fine if those are literally 30bucks by then
Dpad ruined the entire classic for me
Retail price is $70, but will likely drop to $50-60 a few months after release
Vita style dpad is ass
It was passable on the flip 2 cuz it wasn’t a retro first system
2030 is only 5 years away
I'm legit depressed thinking about how little $30 will be worth in 5 years
Bigmac meal comin in hot
Yup, that much I already knew. I like the Vita D-Pad, but I won’t blame anyone for wanting a Sega style D-pad with the Saturn buttons.
I love that dpad for pokemon and tetris
Go go Scottish Ranger bagpipes intensifies
Original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkDhvakx2P4
A dpad has to have only two qualities to be acceptable for me: no false diagonals, plus easy intentional diagonals
yeah, felt stupid having written that the second I send it, $70 in 2030 will be worth what $30 are now anyway
So is there any reason with the Flip 2 though? Like is there any issues that you thought wouldn’t bother you much, but ended up not liking (like with me and the MiniLED for the O2 Mini)? Or did you think it’s a good handheld for what you liked using it for, but just flat out decided having a whole device for that use case isn’t worthwhile.
(I remember you really liked playing something with it, I just can’t remember specifically what).
NGL I don't see the problem with the Vita D-pad aside from it not being nostalgic lol
Somehow 75% of devices manage to screw at least one of these up
It's very good in terms of function
Edges are too sharp, hinge angle is terrible
Let's be honest though I doubt we'll ever see anything besides barebones handhelds below $30 or so
Its a retroid device so you'll need to buy a grip for it
I'm still confused as fuck about the whole scaling mumbo whumbo on the 34xx devices tho if it's really a 1280x960 screen, them covering shit up should result in 3.2" of usable screen
Yeah it's actually 720x480, check the pinned message
$200+ device but felt like $50 build quality
Eh, I liked using my RP5 and RP Mini without grips, and the same is true for the Flip 2, although I did get a grip with the Classic to try out.
Was curious about the actor because I assumed they weren't actually Scottish
Turns out he's a Kiwi lol
…Ok, that feels like the exact opposite of what you were saying when you got the Flip 2, but I guess changing your mind is reasonable.
It's mostly fine, not the best, but not something to complain about for me
It's a miracle the flip 2 exists compared to the state of handhelds just a few years ago
Its just something I tend to see when retroid products launch, everybody asks for grips . They make good products overall though
I don’t feel much of a need for a grip on the Classic per se, I just thought it might be nice for using at home.
Sniffer is always sniffing up the current thing and discards his fandom a day after getting a new device
I remember all the videos with the sketchy Chinese handhelds that could barely run ps1 at $400
Ergos are a travesty
…Holy shit, I was about to say “that’s a bit mean to say”, but that actually does track.
I'm blown away people were cool with the rp5 launch. At that point you should prioritize sticks placement
The eternal search for the perfect handheld continues
Ayn portal ez
Next question
Odin 2 mini was the closest so far
I mean technically there is a perfect theoretical handheld out there if you set parameters for perfect
…Yeah, I can agree with that.
It’s not pocketable, but we’ve got more than enough pocketable handhelds for that to be a non-issue when recommending the Portal, and it’s arguably still portable if you have something bigger like a backpack or that Fanny pack thing.
I hate the literal perfect. Nothing can ever be literally perfect. But for a device you could use for years with basically no huge issues, the ayn portal is perfect
I'm not particularly interested in non pocketable devices, imo it kind of stretches the meaning of handheld
34xxSP probably
But you’re literally perfect
I think the only device that could ever be legit “perfect” is something like a modular handheld that functions similarly to raspberry pi stuff (the brains and everything are in a smaller box that you can plug into various handheld “cases”).
Also do you really need a bigger screen than 4.5-5" for any type of game?
lol, I ain't here to sell cotton candy
My handheld take that will have me put to death by this community is anything bigger than the SP is too big to fit in my pocket, so it needs to compete with the steam deck and usually they don't.
Since by that point, you can just plug it into a smaller device shell for portability, or you can plug it into a bigger and more ergonomic shell for at home use.
Or you can plug it easily to a dock for using with a TV.
Definitely a take
Wonder how long before we can run PS3 on SP tier devices
Probably a good decade at least
If not longer
Anyway not so much a perfect device for every system, more so a device that just feels perfect
Control and portability wise
I don’t bother with putting anything bigger than my phone into my pants pockets, so the handheld just has to fit in my jacket pocket or in my travel bag to be “portable”.
I feel ya lol
the 35xxSP is fine
I pocketed my trimui smart pro
beyond jacket pocketable handhelds like rp5, everything competes with my steam deck
I feel that, to be fair I do keep a slightly bigger handheld in my airline luggage. But otherwise it's just being used at home if I can't put it in a front pocket lol
honestly I'm so not interested in the 34xxSP due to it being as small as the original SP, which is just extremely uncomfortable to use for me
I'm just here for the screen drama
Hot take even the OG SP is too thick to be properly pocketable
35XXSP was just a little too big for me but it's a personal thing, I keep a lot of stuff in my pockets haha
My definition of pocketable is phone+case thickness
So like 20mm
Anything else creates a comical bulge
Yeah that's the thing for me, like my pants will technically fit quite a lot because jeans pockets are huge but I don't want to look like a goofy mf at my law firm
Kind of killed my hype for the flip 2 when I found out how thick it is
Idk what kind of pants yall wear but I'm not exactly a small person, I have no clue how you'd fit an SP into skinny jeans without looking totally ridonkulous
I mean, the same way I fit a wallet
...I'm not skinny enough for skinny jeans, let's just leave it at that LOL
We calling wrong takes hot takes now?
is he wrong though? 35xxsp fell out of my rotation because it's just too bulky for my pants and jacket pockets
if you want to put it in a bag or something sure all good
but I have other bag handhelds lol
That's why it got relegated to the suitcase for me too. I think it's just personal preference how big of an object you wanna carry, I mean as a kid I carried a DS in my pocket but as an adult I think that's too large
If you have a bag, may as well bring a steam deck 😂
normalize rolling in with Engelbert Strauss work wear into your law firm, so you can just carry your Odin 2 Portal in your pants
I hate skinny jeans regardless, so most of my pants are baggy enough for even stuff like the Flip 2 to be fine enough.
Only reason I still don’t put them in there and just use jacket pockets or travel bags is because I just don’t like the feeling of them bumping into my leg whenever I take a particularly big step (over like a puddle or something).
Oh I thought we meant actual OG sp
Yeah it's that and also past a certain size I can't easily grab the other stuff I keep in the same pocket, like my wallet and earbuds. I hate having to take a thing out of my pocket just to be able to grab something else
Only a 1.5mm difference
Don’t start this war.
1.5 mm is plenty big, or so I've heard
Don't let anyone lie to you
Size matters
Nothing wrong with a little pocket bulge tbh
how many <20mm thick handhelds are out there anyway
the r46s is pretty thin... annoyingly so even IMO, but that's still 22mm iirc?
Smart pro is pretty thin
oh yeah that actually should only be 20mm
A lot of candybar handhelds are pretty thin if they don't have built in grips
You know what. What a fucking cool time we live in where everyone gets something dope nowadays with these handhelds
Oh hey, the RP Mini V3 chat got killed as well.
Did you take it down yourself, or was that also Ban since he was already taking down the SP V2 chat?
I don’t think “taking down effective meme channels that have no actual evidence of being real devices” is comparable to 1984.
…Maybe it’s comparable to “The Giver” since it’s trying to strip away whimsy and tomfoolery for the sake of making things nice and tidy.
why? wasn't it comfirned to come out at some point?
That’s the thing, it was confirmed to come out as a screen mod for the Mini, and the panels would also be available for future devices. It was never confirmed to be a separate device.
The mini v3 does have backing though, Retroid David mentioned they were working to develop a new custom screen
so they just wanted to make a 3.7 inch 1280x960 display with the huge bezels??
how does that make sense?
No, they didn’t say anything about it being the same screen size or a different size, just that the internals for the device would fit (albeit likely needing longer ribbon cables if the screen was bigger, since you’d need to make the device wider and move the controls further outward).
I guess they anticipated people being pissy about it not being 4:3?
there was a V2, which is the diy kit or fixed screens they just sold
theres also a V3 with a new bespoke screen that is supposedly coming around the end of the year
Most people were recommending the screen be 4” to 4.4” (since that’s the screen dimensions of 4:3 on the RP5’s screen), with some people recommending that they instead do a 1440p 4:3 screen since that would integer scale with practically everything.
Right, but at the same time the V3 used to be the V2 before we even found out about the original V1 Mini screen being the LG Wing one covered with bezels.
Moderators killed it
as far as we know its still coming
We haven't really seen anything to the contrary
RIP, it makes sense but still sucks. Oh well, at least we can talk about it in the regular Mini channel.
And it makes sense that they'd make a successor to release alongside the rp6
its fine to lock it for now anyway until we get actual movement on it later
And unlike huffis thread the 4:3 mortgage screen is confirmed by Retroid themselves 😭
no need to have a channel open for it forever
No need to take it down either tbh
It’s specifically the custom screen that might end up in the new 4:3 option, the Mini V3 was directly stated to be a screen mod for the current Mini, with them being open to the idea of using it in later devices as well (and very likely guaranteed to do so since, well, why the hell would they waste the money a custom screen costs just for a single optional mod?).
I might be misremembering but I don't really think that's the case, why would they call the screen mod the v3?
they didnt?
It’s them very likely using it in “a future device that isn’t the Mini” that is the same reason why we’re recommending they do a 1440p screen for future proofing.
Rhetorical question
originally the v2 was the new screen 4:3, bespoke
then the v2 became the screen mod and the bespoke screen was v3
They didn’t, they first called the planned device with that screen the “V2 Mini” (and then the fixed Mini became the V2), but the screen pretty much never had an official name.
if we could stop calling the screen mod the v3 that would go a long way to making the convo less confusing
I haven't see anybody call it that except right now tbh
^
Imma just call it the “4:3 OLED” since this is unironically supposed to be the first OLED panel that’s less than 5” and 4:3.
that works
That or the “Retroid Bespoke” screen, like you were calling it.
yeh
its "bespoke" because they are supposedly having a screen made just for them
which is unusual for these companies
Zarathustra reference fr
since they usually use factory seconds or old stock
Since the post is locked I can't even change the name to something like Retroid Pocket 4:3 1440p OLED mortgage screen device
Damn, we can’t immortalize the screen as the “Mortgage Killer”.
Change what

Why
wow... that's offensive
You didn't say for who's amusement

Seriously though, if you've got like actual proof of a V3 we're happy to open it back up for you. But like
We need an image or a patent or something rather than just hopes
just retroids offhand post for now yeah
we will have to wait for the end of year to see if it appears
I'd personally wait till something more direct comes
If a V3 mini hits I'll eat a block of cheese during the podcast
Ew
pepperjack?
Sharp Cheddar is gross
make it a challenge, calcified 1970 government cheese
if you think sharp is bad try aged multi year cheddar
i bit into one of the crystals one time and it was so bitter
Yeah I can't do sharp on its own
But in something else
I thought RPMini V3 is confirmed? So the mortgage on Retroid CEO's house was for nothing?
How does anbernic plastic usually feel in their budget devices
I have a rg406h and it feels fine but not sure if they use cheaper plastic in their xx line
Their plastic usually feels nice. Apparently even BatleXP 350 feels good.
they said the screen is still happening, so while we may not get a direct replacement for the V1 mini anymore, a device with a 4:3 OLED panel will happen, very likely within the next 7-10months IMO
The only oddity was like the battery cover being very slightly raised on the 35xx sp. this one doesn't have one
funny enough my battery cover on my 35sp has always been flush
Weird yeah I heard about it from a few others and mine had it too lol
It's not too bad though. You would only notice if you actually looked for it
I've tried screwing it a few different ways and I think it's just the plate lol
I think so?
Probably yeah
Good
So is it or isn’t it a native 3:2?
From those teardown images it definitely looks like some screen is being hidden. I’m still working through the 9000 messages above
Anbernic says it’s a custom screen and Gamma’s findings are pinned. #1332421146074939443 message
From what I gather max zhou says it’s a 3:2 panel in a 4:3 housing
has anyone taken a picture of the device's backlight on with the housing off?
It's 4:3 screen housed and scaled to be 3:2 - See Le Phawx video.

Phawx’s video is wrong
See gamma pins
The display is not 1280x960
It’s 720 pixels horizontal at the least
Order me another unit and I’d gladly do a teardown
that’s a good point, it would be wider than the bezel but Phawx just showed it taller?
Well I shouldn’t say the phawx’s video is wrong, just that his conclusion about the panel being 1280x960 is wrong
Yeah. Tracing the device to origin it's going to be as Phawx said. There is nothing wrong with 1.78 projection they have done - it's good even. Bottom line. If you like it buy it. This is not the retroid scandal. That's said, vendors should be much more open with the community, since we care so much and are willing to dig in so deeply.
Ultimately it means we really love these products, and the work by the engineers who build them, perfectly marketed or not.
#1332421146074939443 message
Well if it's literally just a 720x480 with a shroud then anbernic was open about it lol
There was literally nothing to discuss
Gammas tests and anbernics claims seem to align so
Yep. And if what gamma said about dtb sometimes using the wrong name is true, then that would make sense as to why it said it was a different display
Yup
Any press is good press for Max Zhou at this point. Masterclass
I don't know why everyone immediately freaked because it reported a different resolution.
That was super common with older monitors/TVs.
To the point that there were warnings not to switch to those resolutions unless you were sure it was actually supported.
Because people in this community like drama
the internet
It's part of the reason why your resolution gets swapped back in 15 seconds if you don't manually hit confirm afterwards.
That said, they should've oriented the screen so it had a big chin instead of a big forehead for people to place stickers underneath.
Like those GBA bottom bezels.
Agreed. According to max that decision is because the drivers and wires are located there lol
the rp mini fraud has everyone on edge looking for hidden screen inside their handhelds lol
Honestly, this is the problem when a well liked and respected person shares info that turns out to be incorrect.
It gets spread like wildfire and even if they edit the video/pin a comment and release a correction video most people will only remember "Yeah, Anbernic faked the screen"
He did say it looked fine tbf
yeah I expect to be seeing claims anbernic faked a screen even years from now on SBCgaming etc
To be fair I don’t think phawx explicitly said it was a fact, just that “this is what is being reported, this is what that could mean, and this is how it could be happening”
But you have to know what the implications would be coming off of RPmini-gate.
I fully assume he meant well, but there were so many ways to have double checked.
Phawx is basing it off what his Linux cmd spat out. It was almost impossible to be correct with the way he went about it
My order from the US warehouse is "shipped" but tracking hasn't updated yet
Its more impressive that phawx's theory got us here and I don't see anyone else doing what he does
Yeah, I don't want to come off like I'm saying he did something wrong. If anything it's nice having people look into suspicious things like this.
I was more hopeful it was a real 4:3 higher resolution screen and we would see a new version. The 3:2 I am personally not interested in.
If it had no sticks and centered 3:2... that statement would be different of course.
Yeah, about that...
I think @blissful estuary followed some solid leads tbh, but yeah there's a lot that can obfuscate the reality. I had no idea that the panel was that big under the shell, so that was a cool discovery.
Yeah based off the information provided he was being sent into a hole of lies
this is the 406v device tree, note how it still references the cube LCD in the name:
https://gist.github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/7bba3b8c9d178ea860e75850ec921a77#file-406v-running-kernel-dts-L2028
So it is entirely possible that the 1280x960 is just referencing the 406h
Their naming guy got everything a device late
Potentially, it's just a FB mode that's enabled, probably some whacky config
Or could be related to HDMI timings
Ahhh okay
Straight from Max Zhou: "The panel driver chip supports multiple resolutions, but the screen glass is 720x480"
Basically, Phawx is wrong and Anbernic didn't falsely advertise any of the specs. You can actually get integer scaled 3x GBA. But I hope Max Zhou still puts out that video of him prying the panel open to show where the actual screen ends
Yea this is fair.
Still going to do an update video tho
Just to be funny... wasn't he the one who also told us the H700 devices were DONE?! 🙂
So the model number for the display is just a bogus one.
Sometimes they'll use model numbers that may have a compatible display controller, but yeah theres no consistency there and the panel string has no bearing on driving the display itself
I guess the only other question is if the PMU is reporting the battery size correctly or that's bogus as well
It's actually a 6000mah
More than likely they entered a lower number in the device tree for that too
The problem for me with the PMU is when I challenge it, it does show 100% capacity and 3000000 uAh
But I bought a device that can run tests on batteries externally
So I'll be able to externally verify
I still hate that they lied about the battery
It doesn't make much of a difference with the device
But they still fuckin lied about a component that's not quite as good as advertised
It’s fine. Part of it is hidden under the huge bezel but it doesn’t really change anything
So it's mid
It might be a 3300mah battery they treat as 3000 in software just to have a buffer against over-discharge and to account for tolerances but it’ll need tools
I doubt a missing 300mah would shave a significant amount on time off of play
Well it's actually a really good screen lol
34xx screen is amazing
Even if it's just 720x480, the colours and brightness are great
That's fair
It does look basically the same as the one used for the 35SP
So you might be right
Wait why copping this if you got that lol
Cuz
Totally fair
Yep, could be a mistake in their devicetree
It won't surprise me at all if their devicetree is filled with errors and typos
Probably like 256gb sd Cards that actually have 230gb available
Me when gibibytes
Nah, that's just the difference between Gigabytes (GB) and Gibibytes (GiB).
if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it probably is a duck
that's the first thing that's taught in game programming class
practically everything in tech is like that
a horse is just a human class with 2 extra legs
never assume something is an error , typo or mistake without checking documentations. 1 "assumed typo" fix can bring the whole thing down
Sorry buddy you’re a little late lol
Screen issues have already been debunked lol
I still don't believe Anbernic's statement.
Ofc they're going to defend their device.
Gammas tests seem to align with their statements
But for me it's still a 💩 device!
Ordered 7 days ago from Ali - arrived at my door in Australia just now. No way that this was getting damaged in transit - the packaging is extensive.
Well if it's a 1280×960 screen it's just insane to go trought the efforr to scale it to 720×480
My unit finally shipped
Dang we still talking about the screen?
people just need a reason to be outrage, let them be
Outrage looks quite different
Anbernic not going trought the effort of moving the active area up makes it look weird, if this is indeed a 4:3 panel tho
Well, the huge forehead makes it look like one at least
it is weird because if we accept that it is a 3:2 screen in a 4:3 housing why did they centre it in the housing for the 34xx but then bottom align it for the 34xxSP
the two things I've heard are
1: max said theres some wiring or whatever in the forehead
2: the analogue sticks (?)
The analogue sticks thing was mentioned by stubbs but I'm not sure if that means like there needed to be more room for it to fold?
or because they needed to create like a bevel to make it not touch the sticks. I don't know
could be a ribbon cable durability concern
since the cable has to go through the hinge
yeah it was something like, the drivers and cables are running through the top
#1332421146074939443 message
The wiring is at the top and they can't rotate the screen 180 degree because the driver does not support it
the 34xx (not sp) has it more centred though
maxzhou said he will be doing a teardown of the screen soon and expect the sorry videos from the "foreigners"
he will be waiting forever, we all know "foreigners" don't apology ever, the best he can get is an acknowledgement of mistake
Ah I don't think I said analogue sticks, but I thought they were leaving room for the magnets was my original theory 😆
Not sure where I heard that then.. Lol
Isn't it Anbernic who doesn't apologize ever? They kind of just swag it off and move on to the next handheld? 😂
I don't expect apologies from the dastardly foreigners either though
yeah they prefer to blacklist people for constructive criticism 🤣
I imagine Phawx is very much on that blacklist now.
who's currently on the list now?
Joey, Taki and now Phawx? xD
I wonder if RGC and RH guys will get on it as well because they reposted the findings of Phawx 😄
i get joey, but is taki really?
He was for a loooong time already 😄
taki just doesn't make much video nowaday
Unless they forgot about him because indeed he doesnt do any videos
he can just cross the street to get it, no need to send it to taki
taki is too busy not finishing his 42 products
as I understand it, taki is a screen quality control contractor right? doing youtube is just a hobby
Not sure, I think he was an youtuber first and become contractor later on
He was an OG good quality reviewer, the first guy getting into the details and being more critical when there were only RetroDODO's and ETA Primes in this space
He was well liked and respected until he criticized Retroid for RP3 shortcomings and started to bash anything made by Retroid and AYN 😄
I like taki, hope his business is doing ok, I have no interest of buying his expensive niche products but hope him all the best
His idea for business is very good, but you can tell he is inexperienced because he is trying to do too many things at once
(like MagicX xD)
It's all good though. He fixed the issues with the retroid 3+.
(Are we still doing those jokes?)
ah yeah, exactly a lot of people didn't like this statement (especially the Retroid guys, I guess because of their argument), but apparently he really did chose the t618 etc for it ;D
T618 was the GOAT chip.
Its interesting that still its better than most of the chips we see in low and mid end devices lol 😛
But I have to say Anbernic's T820 was a pretty good successor to it, still keeping their devices super affordable and just enough to push for more GC and PS2
Aye. RP flip is still my most used device, and still more powerful than most of the stuff people talk about here
T618's had a great price point, and covers all the systems up to PSP nicely. Big jump in power needed to fully cover the next stuff like 3DS and GC.
I have to say RP Flip 2 is super tempting
My OLED screen is just like 9months behind schedule... his buisness can go belly up for all I care
It does seem nice.
Honestly, I don't want to play anything more advanced than psp on a small screen anyway, so my flip 1 is fine.
But it's nice to know that the flip 2 is available when my flip 1 does eventually break.
5.5" is significantly bigger though
Yeah but the Flip 1's display is already bigger than the original PSP's
You wouldn't get a whole new device just for a better screen
Or at least I wouldn't
Oh I misunderstood
Meh. 3/4". Bigger and better.
But I don't feel the need to spend £200+ on a device that I will just be playing the same games on.
If I wanted pocketable GC/3ds/Wii/PS2 it would make more sense.
Means you'll have to question it on every device moving forward, these companies really don't understand what losing credibility means in the long term
Kehoe might be right at least
They already are under scrutiny because some people think their batteries are going to explode if they use the wrong charger, but now the battery isn't even the right size they claim either
I'd believe it, since physical size of the battery is the same as the 35SP
Or at least looks like it
Yeah I mean let's hope that's the case
Where can I find the Gamma tests results?
#1332421146074939443 message
Pins
Oh thank you both. I didn't see it.
Gammas won't do his magic on H700 devices because they're on the way out, right?
I don't think they have the right libs to run gamma
he got blacklisted by anbernic when he did his rg552 review
he called them out for letting cfw developers fix their devices instead of doing good day one software and i suppose they got pissed
Taki videos are just him whining and complaining about everything wrong with a given device
Except the RP3Pro of course
tbf i think his heart's in the right place, and he can give out very good criticisms about a device
but i thought he was a bit more visibly biased than other reviewers
I think more negative reviewers have a place in the community, someone needs to apply that kind of pressure, but I also personally don't enjoy watching reviews that are totally negative rather than critical in constructive ways
lowers pitchfork slowly
【周哥拆解34xxsp屏幕,回应遮盖传言、分辨率问题。34xxsp和34xx是同一块屏幕。-哔哩哔哩】 https://b23.tv/oXi8cMg
Teardown by maxzhou himself
really cool
I still think he did it on purpose to fuck with Retroid 😄 why he left in db exactly the same resolution that Retroid claim RP Mini had?
how many D's of chess is that 🤣
MaxDs xD
Maxzhou made Phawx make a video that made the community shout "Anbernic you have 3.5" 1280x960 screens why don't you just do a 4:3 clamshell with sticks", so Maxzhou can release 35xx sp pro max next month with again an H700 inside, "you asked for it"
that wasn't much of a tear down, pry the panel open and show us there ain't any screen hidden
🔥
TBH its quite strange that the ribbon cable is hidden to make it look exactly as if it was 4:3 xD
but still, it could be his pettiness and jab at Retroid
Maybe it's the shell mold
having one solid piece makes assembly easier, but quite frankly them not just putting the damn thing the other way around to not have the five-head is what throws me off
i dont speak ching chong, can someone translate
That pesky foreigner Phawx is shadow banned for his kung fu treachery!
Tiny bit racist
What do you expect from a default pfp
sounds like 34xx MuOS img should work off rip, just no fold to sleep func obv
peeps are really putting moderation to work today lol
Imagine banning the same guy 4 times
Couldn't be me
thats a repeat problem user
Steamdeckp gone
Steamdeck P Nas
I prefer an AI NAS
Wasn't he the same guy who called retro game corps a pussy for not complaining to anbernic about the rg34xxsp screen?
Yes
Yes
And got rude to others as well
Every time I see him post he’s flaming someone lol
And apparently is also a bigot
hey now, some of us are just legitimately lazy
wait, I don't think that really works as an argument
nevermind
For those who havent seen Black Dynamite, a hilarious blaxploitation action comedy, thats where "Kung Fu treachery" is from. Not being racist 🙂
The good news is I've realized that it's actually insanely easy to verify things.
Not sure if you saw above, I think gamma measured the pixels
This is confirmation it is indeed 720x480
The French strike again
I bought a digital microscope and pushed single pixels to 720x480 and it's as clear as day only a single pixel is illuminated
Will use this in a follow up video
Perhaps, we shall see. I don't think so
collecting some cool tools for future reviews
@blissful estuary is the battery actually 3,000 though? Does the label show 3,300 if you open it?
I also bought an external power analyzer for USBC at 160watts and direct battery connection
Basically have to assume any information I get from these cheaper embedded devices have absolutely bogus data
So I'll need to externally verify
Not suprised. Its not like they have consumer regulations to abide to
For the battery side, it would be most helpful as I could get realtime total system power information
But at the very least the 5h15m battery life is official worst case I recorded (could be do to screen can get brighter)
Compared to other similar anbernics?
Maybe the heat from the cpu is reducing the battery? I know it doesnt have a heatsink, but if i put thermal paste on the cpu/gpu would it lower the heat?
I'm not sure why it would be difficult to apologize. In my video, I did a direct pixel comparison and even myself was in disbelief at what the system was reporting. But I wasn't negative on the device (outside of 3:2 not being great for 4:3 content) and even said it is my favorite GBA handheld at the end.
My mistake was not leaving it as an open question despite having lots of coincidences. I should have got proper verification.
As a result, I do need to apologize to Maz Zhou because I made him waste some of his time that he didn't need too.
I also need to apologize to basically everyone for wasting their time because of how it all rolled out.
But that's not difficult. I recognize where I went wrong and have this as a learning opportunity to do better. No one's perfect
Don't think it would appreciably. Nor would it really change power dynamics.
Reality is that the chip itself is likely using ~1 watt which is not much of anything to concern. 1+ watt used by display/WiFi/ram this is nothing
So is the heat coming from the battery? I dont have my unit yet but it sounded like from stubbs, this unit is hotter than the 35xx sp
Better you wasting our time than some other chucklehead
I think it's great that your theory led to a response from Max and provided more clarity on why things are made the way they are. Leaving it open-ended would've been better video-wise but I think this brought a lot of valuable information and response that we wouldn't have gotten otherwise from the community+Anbernic
I love this kinda shit.. Especially if things are constructive and we can have active discussion on it
that tracks - the 28xx has amazing battery life with the same chip, presumably due to smaller screen, dimmer screen, and no wifi.
the no wifi is a pretty big part id guess
this is one of the few or even first times I've seen Max respond directly to a video like that. He didn't sound upset (I have a novice level of Mandarin understanding lol) and it was pretty cool to watch and listen to
granted if he made a comment on "the foreigner", I may have skipped it. But his tone and what he was explaining in regards to the screens was mostly educational
Most likely culprit yea
something is lost in the translation here, my comment was not directed at you or anyone in particular. It was a comment on western culture where everyone is so afraid of being sued, no one ever publicly apology or admit wrong doing even they wanted to
Max knows it was a mistake amd he probably knows that phawx didn't do anything wrong
It's great theory which explained why the screen was like that
Thats not a western culture. Thats American culture. Here in Canada, we dont sue people for anything. Same in the EU.
To clarify, I took no offense at all. ❤️
Problem is as a content creator you'll get a little outside of your comfort zone and talk about some of that stuff. And you know yourself that you're just kinda throwing some ideas out there.
But your audience who's even less familiar with the subject is used to take you as a source of truth and will take your word for it.
I guess the main mistake was to present this info a little too confidently. Also some of your theories (especially the overscan one) were really easy to debunk even without a microscope. 6 pixels on each side of a 1280 screen are easy to see if they're missing to the naked eye on a GBA game. (albeit while looking at the screen from quite up close)
You can actually search my receipts (maybe even on twitter) I use the phrase "Trust is a currency" and for sure that has been watered down. Going forward, any claim I make will have to be backed by something more concrete.
for the overscan, there is play there as I wasn't even certain on what the uniform scale could be. 1.78<>1.8 would be nothing or more respectively.
But yea, I should have trusted just the straight pixel comparison I did in my video as well. There was mutually exclusive ideas I was holding on to and I wouldn't let go of the bogus 1280x960 and weirdo LCD model data tied along with the weirdo "extra" display when opening the front lid
truth be told, I didn't even open the front lid first
the sequence of events was
- get power data directly
- oh let me get display model
- wth is 1280x960 thats 4:3
well that would mean physically there is more screen and then opening and seeing it
so it was just a string of coincidences that led to me holding firm to this idea
It's ok to Phawx up sometimes. We all do it.
eyyyyy
It would have been quite an interesting find if it ended up being a different screen for sure. And it's become more important to check especially after the Retroid fiasco! (the Retroid Classic would be my perfect vertical but I refuse to buy more from them after the Retroid Mini gaslighting saga)
I guess the Anbernic / RG34XXSP haters were really just too ready to light up on anything
Your point on trust is what cripples me most. I've long invested in my word having value and to devalue it pains me
I'm not sure people outside of maybe 50 people across this discord and reddit will care to be honest.
I was really just trying to word that sometimes someone can be throwing some ideas to start a conversation about something curious. But the people listening are no there to open a convo and more to feed on some "pre-packaged" opinion, if that makes sense?
It does indeed
Hopefully Anbernic takes it gracefully, in any case they could use a little reminder that we're on the lookout for any chicanery
Cmon it's phawx one mistakes it's minor
I definitely agree with you, but as humans nobody's above some pettiness.
Anbernic would be fine max probably knows he meant no harm just a good theory stuff
Like he didn't even bash them like how taki would
phawx does more technical stuff in the reviews than a lot of other content creators
its not like he's throwing out random theories, he even explains and shows his reasoning
Exactly that's why it's phawx
I'm not saying they would be right to hold a grudge, quite the opposite!
To be honest unless you did something extra wrong to them like it's not like ayaneo would be
but then there's still the question about the battery haha
is it 3000 or 3300mAh like they advertised
I don't think there was anything on that video that should merit any such "devaluing". I understood pretty much next to nothing of the technical stuff (only myself to blame for that), but I saw questions, an attempt at finding answers and credit given where credit was due. Questioning things is healthy behaviour, and even if there were misunderstandings or misgivings in the findings presented, I think it was clear for everyone to see that it was coming from a place of respect to both the audience and the brand. And, honestly, brands should be open to clarify issues such as these, it does less harm than good for everyone involved. The RP mini fiasco is too fresh in everyone's minds, for good and for bad, and the biggest issue there was the lack of transparency
TLDR, sorry
Anbernic… concerned with durability? 🤔
I mean if having a bunch of extra length on the ribbon below the screen made it bend and bind or something it could have been immediately obvious
I still think he was going too easy on them considering what Anbernic decided to pull for the RG353 devices “official” firmware.
And no sticks.
A lot of the things even flew over me as a Chinese but basically they used a screen panel without the glass overlay as a comparison, and showed that above the display window is not unused pixels, but rather the cables and structural material. So the screen is FULL.
The hinges on my RG34XXSPs feel amazing to me -- better than the 35XXSP, the Flip, and the V90 (OG). I'm very impressed. The buttons, while slightly louder than my Flips, are probably quiet enough for my spouse. Now I just need to get rid of the skittles on the black unit stat for my indelicate sensibilities.
I could only compare them by sight, but I believe the button caps the 34SP has are bigger than the 35SP's
I get 7.6mm on both
the D-Pad is wider on each direction on the 35SP, but the overall width is very close if not the same
these are quick measurements with a very cheap caliper
My 34xx flippy gets here Tuesday
I grabbed a gray and a black, but since I have a cobalt GBSP i’ll probably get an indigo eventually
definitely feels more pocketable than the 35SP
Good to hear
they do, people love to bash anbernic but forget they are one of the OGs. Maxzhou has been making hombrew games and console hacks since the 90s. Anbernic is just him and his friends making big while doing what they love
Do the buttons feel any harder than the Flip, or just slightly louder?
Tbh I think my Flip buttons are just barely too mushy. Don’t want to click, but wouldn’t mind just a tad more tactile.
Is Anbernic shipping them to US buyers already?
…Or wait, do you just not live in the US?
I just ordered from the Ali store yesterday. Shipped from CA and should be here in a week.
i'm going to wait on a sale. im happy with the 34XX for now
Mine shipped
Scheduled for Tuesday delivery
I know you came from a good place 👍
It's kind of a shame that being a trusted source makes backlash/fallout over incorrect information exponentially worse since that misinformation will fly faster than any correction can address.
I feel like the SBC/Retro Handheld community is relatively close though.
Besides from getting more concrete evidence yourself on issues I'm sure you can reach out to others for a second opinion before committing to a video.
Why is there a big crack/big line on the screen compared to the 35xx?
I think it's just the seam line between the plastic it's more prominent on light color like gray or white
@gaunt coral @minor terrace that’s right, the seam is more obvious on the gray plastic of the 34XXSP. Oddly the seam is smoother on the Flip
Flip on the left
Miyoo has always taken better care of processing their plastic
But looking at it closer the seams seem to have fused amazing
Maybe they're using softer plastic?
That's awesome so they probably sand it down to make it smooth
Miyoo flip seems like the best device if they fix the hinge. Such a hard decision with every device having a large downside. I personally think the buttons are too hard on the 35xxsp v2 so that is a dealbreaker for me :/
I doubt anyone will truly devalue your word from this man, that follow-up vid will help for sure, and also shit happens. You try your best each time, I have rarely ever seen you make mistakes. Never forgot. This guy Phawx!
As someone not following to closely, Phawx saw the 34xxsp screen reporting 4:3 in a software then he mistook the driver area as unused screen. Not a big deal, I think people would be overreacting to say such a mistake is “trust shattering”
It came
Oh no, a Grey Model....watch out for Hinge Issues.....whoops wrong device
Not with anbernic
The device feels solid af
Solid game. How does the dpad feel? I played it on 34XX and it made me realize the dpad is subpar.
By the way shouldn’t this channel be moved out of upcoming?
nah you are cool, happens to all major YouTubers, years of trustworthy content are not going to be trashed because of this
though I will never forgive you for making me buy the original GPD Win Max on your recommendation that it was not too large or heavy only to find out that it was indeed too large and heavy
(in fairness that was pre- steam deck or ally so it was still a solid device for its time)
Skill issue
fair
that was before I started lifting so my opinion might be different now if I still had it
"Do you even handheld, bro?" 😆
Dpad is identical to the miyoo mini
TIL Phawx Lifts, so Handhelds are lighter by his standards
Russ has been claiming that he's a professional weight lifter for years, and every time he casually mentions it on his videos he sounds so dead serious that I honestly can't tell if it's a long running joke or not
I feel like it has to be a long running joke but I'm afraid to ask at this point
Oooooh that's good news
I'm struggling really to fine any complaints about about the device, the '5head' is no way as big as people are making out, it looks alot more normal than in the pictures
It’s called a sleeper build
Would love to see Russ do some Fitness Tuber Guest Appearance lol. Just Casually appear play some games do a "Daily Workout with Me" go back to Playing games & Testing 🤣
Do we know if knulli is working on the RG 34xx sp?
You probably can boot it just fine but it might need some fixes for the 3:2 screen.
The sticks wont work
My question was is if we know if knulli is working on a version for the 34xx sp, not if I can use an existing version.
Your answer is yes but the sticks won't work
So they cant implement an OS with working sticks? Do you know why?
Im sure they will but it will take time to develop
They will need the device in hand to do it
Likely they haven't received
Well then, that’ll teach me to not order from GoGameGeek then, even if I only did so because I still had a leftover 20% discount code.
I literally point blanked asked them if they would be shipping them via their local US Warehouse and they said they would.
Fast forward to yesterday and they sent a tracking number for YunExpress shipping from China around 4AM, and they also never actually handed it over to the shipping company and only made the tracking number order.
Oof I learned the hard way on why not to preorder from GGG. I ordered my brick from them and it took an extra 2 weeks to ship compared to aliexpress
Yeah, I’m honestly fine with the wait, I’m mostly just annoyed at the fact they lied right to my face about the US Warehouse shipping thing.
Will MinUI run on this?
Yes
Not sure if it’s supported at the current moment but it usually does support the H700 devices
I seem to have an issue with wifi on mine
It looks like knulli actually have a working build
Yeah knulli doesn't work with the sticks or the menu buttom
No menu button kinda sucks
Does anyone know where i can find the stock OS? My computer now wont recognise the stock sd 😭
So the battery is labelled Anbernic and 3300, so curious if they are being decieved by the battery supplier or linux is reading it wrong
The link of the anbernic website will not allow access to the gdri e
You could try modded stock https://github.com/cbepx-me/Anbernic-H700-RG-xx-StockOS-Modification
Im trying that but it has hung on 17.2%
Huh, strange
If your PC isn't recognising the stock microSD card, it might just need you to assign it a drive letter. Put the microSD card into your PC and then go to Disk Management in Windows.
If you can see the microSD card listed there, just right-click on it and click "Change drive letter and paths"
I tried this
Whats strange is it recognises it on my mac
Im making a bootable image of it atm
Well the "menu" button is the one button above the D-pad and face buttons
Even has an M on it
It's just that in essence, it's more the hotkey button
You hold menu + select to go back to the menu IIRC
But menu + RT is speed up for example
He meant the menu button doesn't work with knulli atm
The stockmod has actually worked as is pretty nice
What are the odds that they are going to release an RG35xxSP with the twin sticks?
Unlikely imo
I think we’re more likely to get something with more power like an RG406SP with sticks
Actually no maybe they would do a 35xxsp+ or pro with sticks, could happen
I don't see Anbernic having much in way of H700 chips anymore
