On the h700 devices my go to benchmark is sonic adventure 2 because there’s a spot right at the beginning that bottlenecks and on pretty much all h700 devices it’ll hit around 30-31 fps

It takes me a minute to test any potential performance variations that way and it’s extremely consistent in a real-world environment

The cubexx is still my top overall pick in the h700 line for pure ergonomics

The easiest way to identify cardinal snapping I’ve found visually is the ppsspp joystick calibration gui

Now that I’ve followed what gamma did initially to fix the cardinal snapping on the 35-h and 40xx’s, I see what’s happening

They use a polling method for joystick axis data and apply a deadzone and sensitivity scaler to each axis independently

This means, technically you could have 0% cardinal snapping but you’d also have a 0% deadzone so ghost inputs galore

The trick is finding a happy medium between a usable deadzone without ghost inputs, and a barely noticeable “snapping” when either axis is within the deadzone value in any axis. That’s why it has that cross shaped snapping, or cardinal snapping as it’s been referred to as.

Maybe in the future they’ll use a circular deadzone function that takes both axis values and only applies a deadzone if both axis’s are within the deadzone space (essentially if X < deadzone && Y < deadzone = 0 else true value)

Yeah, 4:3 is more versatile, 34xxSP's screen is only good for GBA and Wonderswan IMO (and easier to run PSP games if you are OK with super tiny screen). On the other hand it's quite noticably smaller and has better buttons according to Gamma - I bought two 35xxSPs - v1 and v2 and sold both because I didnt like the buttons, especially compared to original GBA SP.

But waiting for reviews is a great idea, especially because embargo ends tomorrow and for sure every reviewer will compare it to 35xxSP and Miyoo Flip

To be honest for me it doest even matter that much, I never thought I was actually very sensitive to how the buttons feel, but there was something super wrong with og 35xxSP dome switches I just couldnt use the device 😦 I even tried it again with V2 after reviews said they are much better but they were still terrible, good that Gamma already confirmed that the new buttons feel much better.

I think my problem could be the fact that I spent half of my life with GBA SP, so I'm little bit more sensitive to different dome switches ;D

Like, they literally had longer loading times, the textures were shittier, and the only benefit the games themselves had was that they could fit on 1 regular dvd as opposed to needing 2 disks just to fit on Nintendo’s smaller disks.

Or you’ve got Mega Man X Command Mission, where the textures for the GC port were way more detailed and outright clean than the PS2 port on top of also having better colors (and I’m not talking about a “GC was too saturated” situation, I’m talking “PS2 was too desaturated”), on top of outright running only at 30fps (vs the GC port running at 60fps), and having outright appalling loading times that would even affect battles by having a ton of stutters during turns.

Yup, already mentioned that earlier with the whole “some games only needed 1 disk on PS2 but would need 2 disks (or maybe even more) on GameCube”, and Tales of Symphonia was actually one of them.

At the same time though, I’d still say running a smooth 60fps on that game is better than a 30fps that actively can and will dip further down pretty often.

I love the PS2, even with all of its flaws (literally had it well before I ever had a Wii that could play GC, much less a GC with the digital-output port that made games look even better).

But good freaking god it had a lot of flaws.

Not on this one iirc. There's another mod called the Slate by makho that uses the original buttons, though it's kinda hard to buy last I checked

And do some research on the boxypixel proper SP one with the hinge, it might be different

The pieces are quite high quality and the finish looks great, no complaints there

I never really used it much though so no idea if anything like wears off, but I never heard anything about that happening
