#Anbernic RG34XX (GBA-like H700 handheld, Dec. 2024)
1309 messages · Page 2 of 2 (latest)
your brain wants you to prcoess it as a real gba but the bezels are too straight, that's all
The XX models probably cover their new costs over launch period and after that they all help sell something from the range more than spending on advertising
its not a hugely different shape, it just feels off
i just wish xx devices had proper trimui style sleep, you really don't need any more power for everything ps1 and under
Too
they can keep the chip for as long as they want
It's the bezel.
it's the round bezel vs square
i had the same feel
It makes the dpad look much closer to the screen.
Don't the official OS now have sleep or atleast automated power down and quick resume
Only the CFW don't have that
well and the dpad actually is closer to the screen some
muos has it now too
it's not quite as good though, i can keep my tsp sleeping for weeks
with the xx, two days max
I mean the point of sleep is to pick back up within a shorter timeframe, being away longterm is just a powerdown
Auto save on shut down and auto load on boot up is good enough for me tbh.
Sure I'd like a real sleep mode, but eh. Until TrimUI actually releases something I'd want it a bit of a pipe-dream for me and linux device sleep mode.
RAM is a finite resource eventualy you do want to powercycle it to refresh that
Different screen size so could just call it a 34xxSP
This should be anbernic next project it’ll be funny
wtf
No glacier color 😭
retro handhelds really have evolved so much in just the past 3 years
while that one is fugly, that combination of form factor and controls could work in a better design
It’s insane lol I remember delving in with retro game corps old intro
the powkiddy a30 was fine, just needed better internals and screen
they could have copied that
your palm is gonna be touching that joystick so much
oh it definitely is good enough, i love how customizable it is too
yeah, that'd need to be inset, but a 40xxV would have room for 6 buttons
looks so much better than this one just from the round bezels and diamond face button layout
Buttons are way too far apart there, and Dpad looks like a nightmare to touch
true powshitty fashion
well yeah, it's a powkiddy
I do think the actual diamond face buttons look off on GBA.
I could have lived with these buttons, or even just two face buttons, but the bezel really brought down the whole thing for me.
hear me out, two face buttons and have X & Y as back paddles 😶
No
Did anbernic stole millions of h700 chips?! lol so many
Whoever made the financial decision to do that is probably getting promoted because it made them so much money this year
Funnily enough I think the black one is the one that's growing the most on me, and I'm usually a sucker for transparent colors
Black one looks nice
yeah black one is 100% the cleanest, will grab the indigo too just because my og GBA was that color too tho
I went with nostalgia on silver sp
And regretted it
So I am not doing that this time

why tho?
Would ruin the device
silver SP is neat
I thought the red looked way better but at the time of launch I def liked the black the most
But I went with my 12 year old self’s taste instead of now.. haha
tbh not a fan of the design
so you properly added tribals or nah?
I don’t have an indigo device, so this one will fit in nicely
No I tucked the SP far far far away
I kinda wish they do another SP with this screen
nvm this is worse
they got the bezels right but i hate the buttons
Just swap the screen and guts of the 34XX and SP easy 🙂
I mean, obviously this ain't perfect, but it's the best GBA nostalgia drug we got yet
Inb4 we got a rg40xxSP instead
just another year of 7-8 rgXX devices
honestly wouldn't even be mad if we got screen upgrades and shit
I think they're gonna lean into the T820 a bit more next year if I had to make a guess
damn, i hope mr Nintendo doesn't come crying they're almost copy pasting the original design
Haha true
I think we are pretty done with the t820 tbh, the 406 devices are the best that SoC can handle
“No more H700” -Zhou the Liar, lying as naturally as he breathes.
They thoroughly showed how far from "done" they can be with a single chip lol
Well they move on from chips year to year
well, maybe they are not, but I don't really see what else they could come up with that I would buy .... a 406p aside
You say this in the channel about the third time they’ve announced a new H700 handheld after “the last H700” (where the previous ones were the 40XX V and the CubeXX).
hey I'm not saying they should lean more inot it, but what they should do and what they will do are very different things
They moved on from the t618 at the start of the year this year
and I'm not mad about any of these
Anbernic is really getting the deal with this, reusing same inside components and just swapping shells and screens around, perfect business
Nah, I’m just laughing because it keeps happening, and this is a different handheld from the ArcXX that Zhou talked about.
the ArcXX would have been a huge flop, so I'm glad they didn't do that
Honestly yeah
Meaning they either canceled that one, or they’re planning on making that the first handheld announced next year.
imo Arc really needs "perfect" playable saturn
well, I don't mind really, it's just that you can grab the current Arc for like 60bucks and a new ArcXX would start at like 85 with a weaker SoC
This is assuming they aren’t doing it at all, with this just being something else for December.
well, they can do it, but I will stick with the Arc I have
40xxh with better heat management and the 6v screen and sticks would go hard. At this point I still wouldn't buy it but I would've bought that earlier this year probably lol
Like, the whole reason why I find this funny is because it honestly feels like Anbernic just flat out refuses to outright cancel projects.
Tbh the Arc is one of the few that I think actually warrants the use of the 3566, since with the 6 buttons it can actually enjoy the marginally better N64 play on the android side of boot. Wouldn't make much sense for a H700 downgrade
Whatever they do, they better keep the Sega d-pad alive.
"boss, we already designed everything..."
"might as well just release it into the wild then"
Anbernic should buy up all of Miyoo's failed p60 materials and release it themselves
Welcome to the party lol
Ye it's 720x480
Honestly the 480p is what makes is much more interesting to me
Anbernic spawns the weirdest shit out of China, why are you even surprised
720x480 is literally 3x integer scaling with GBA on top of being the same 480p we’re used to for these handhelds.
Yeah but the only other 3:2 device we have is 320p so
Exactly
Anby takes PK's lunch money again
Hey, this whole time the only screen panels I knew about for 480p GBA integer scaling was a 3.1” 720x480 screen in a gba backlight screen kit, and the 4.3” 800x480 screen. This is literally brand new to me
Well, not the Ayaneo pocket micro, but that's 640p and doesn't play as nicely with older retro games.
i was wondering if it's a custom order fron anbernic
Exactly, which is not great for most other games and ports, while 480p is at least proven to be good for most lower end systems and even ports.
if it is, there will be a ton of devices with this screen
Ktr1
I guess I assumed we were just talking about budget ones shoulda specified
Oh on the contrary, the 640p screen works way better with most retro systems than the 320p.
lmao
I was comparing 640p to 480p
It was more of a "and the 640p does exist, still not great for most retro consoles"
Even then, 640p does proper integer scaling for SNES, NES, and Genesis (with only a slight overscale that takes up unused portions of the screen). 720x480 is mostly exciting for me because of the fact it’s 3x integer scaled for GBA on top of being just as good as the 640x480 screens we usually see (which would also mean integer scaling for PS1).
Yes it's the updated new aluminum version 2 with the newer buttons and the screen is the 16 20x1080
someone get this guy a microfiber cloth NOW
Oh, pack it up guys, the Micro is better for Lynx. Ayaneo wins
Yeah my skills are lacking and my dogs are not lacking and their skills of spreading hair
the downside is the screen size is quite a bit smaller for non-GBA stuff, but given how they fitted it into a device that is literally the size of an GBA, I will take it
NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1 all are much better with the 480p than the 640p, which is great for the 34XX's actual use case.
I wish the screen was shaped just like the one on the GBA. But other than that, I'm sold! This is what I've been waiting for. A GBA form factor emulation handheld.
what does a 3.5 4:3 scale 3:2 to?
An ArcXY when they eventually upgrade their lower end chipset would be good, but there was no point to an ArcXX unless they had literally run out of 3566 chips
Hey, my other recommendations were either 4.3” 5:3 (so excessively bigger than most budget handhelds) or 3.1” 720x480. I was never even expecting this, much less bigger.
Basically the only thing dramatically better about the 640p Ayaneo screen is PSP, tbf, it does have the beef to play.
Think it was suggested that this is an old Smsung display
And the ever so important Lynx don't forget the Lynx, the greatest system known to man
True
Pico-8 is better too lol
To represent the lynx properly you'd have to have a setting that drained your battery every 15 mins
this image made me realize the bottom right bezel of the v10 is different to the rest
i have my v10 right in front of me lmao
Just poke a hole in your battery, it'll be fine
fair, I just forget about that thing because I don't really care for 99.9% of its library.
Pico-8 is fun to just mess around with but it's definitely not worth getting the Micro over this specifically for it
Plus I have a cubeXX already lmao
Yeah balanced pixels and the form factor
Pretty much the best gba you’ll get at this price point
Even the verge is excited
jeez that was quick
Pico-8 is fun to just mess around with but it's definitely not worth getting any handheld specifically for it
Fixed it with my opinion.
when it's a clone it reaches mainstream super fast
Yeah, the SP also got a lot of eyes
Ye same buzz happened with SP
I wonder if verge staff hang here 😅
it's like an odin 2 mini but gba instead of ps vita
Oh those triggers are funny.
they're goofy but i love the idea
the bumpers are one of the highlights of the og gba
rather not have them compromised
Now if only everyone else was a weird pervert like me and thought this layout would be better despite not being accurate (this layout would be more comfortable for holding your thumb on B and using the meat of the thumb hit A so Mario would be more fun)
That feels so cursed
ew no
No one else sees the vision
Idk I think they nailed the button placement as is
they're weird but i love the idea
I'm so sorry. I'm not sure what to say to this.
I just rock my thumb
yeah i used to play super msrio deluxe on my gbc and my gba
the normal layout is more than fine
As a member of the Gameboy modding community, I can confirm it is just you who likes it, and it is indeed disturbed.
Its fine but SMW uses Y to run and B to jump for a reason lol
that's a snes issue, not a gba issue
my childhood mario was played on gameboy so i prefer this by far
I'm not sure how I feel about X and Y being smaller than A and B, but I guess that's a hands-on judgment call.
My childhood Mario was played on gba and I still prefer having the run button up and to the left
Hold Y with the tip of my thumb, then press B with the rest of my thumb.
Or hold B with the top of my thumb, and just kinda rock it to the right a bit to press A
Both work well enough for me
It’s pretty much the similar decision that went into the GKD Bubble, and I can say it at least works on that pretty decently, so maybe it’ll also work on here.
I mean generally speaking yeah it would make sense to angle the buttons differently, to have your thumb rest on both of them, but ehhh
both are fine but i'd rather keep authenticity for gba and not mario
hope that arrives soon, it has been in shipping limbo for a while 😒
Honestly having buttons be too spread out is more of a problem than angles of ABXY imo.
Like the Powkiddy A30
Why are they so spread out.
change the R to a T in your name
Agreed.

Maybe the real problem is holding B to run
you can play other games that aren't mario too

if you kids don't behave, we are going back to the NES controller layout
The problem that everyone has and not just me :) Nah it's not even a big issue at all for me I just like riling people up with my weird take on this, I do still like the GBA quite a bit
You're telling me there are games other than Mario? Name fifty
I hope this has the same weight as a GBA with batteries
Wouldn't be surirpised if it's lighter
Yo imagine if it could use AAs
final fintasy 1 to 16, gran turismo 1 to 7, dragon quest 1 to 11, pokemon red to pokemon shield, resident evil 1 to 8
ez
Doesn't count I win
It's interesting that there's a removable battery compartment, and it looks like a battery that fits in there would be pretty small
sticker says 3500mah
so it's not the sp battery
it's probably a thicker battery since the device is so thick
The real question is will there be more 34XX handhelds
i think if it's a custom order screen by anbernic, there will be a ton
like with the 4 inch 480p
never gonna happen that they make a custom order screen
wasn't the 4 inch 480p literally a custom order?
don't think so
even if Anbernic does quite a few devices and turns huge volumes, it's still a small-ish company that shouldn't be able to afford any custom screens
Final fantasy
i mean, they're moving tons of units
they probably turned a huge profit in the last couple years
the only custom screen in the retro handheld space I can recall would be the one in that insanely expensive fpga Gameboy Color
Screen order is above 100k minimums
Only oems like Samsung or Nintendo order custom screens
i bet 35xx sp has over 100k sold
and if you add up every device with the 3,5 inch 480p it might be half a million
that's miyoo minis (not plus) and it's from 2 years ago, market is so much bigger now
more than expected, the SP may have turned rather 200-300k units
seeing the miyoo mini number, yeah, probably
It's gotta be a LOT
time to sell half a million rg34xx
i mean if it turns into their secondary screen after the 4 inch 720p, they could sell a ton of them with different models
The only thing being custom made for these is boards, cuz circuit boards are pretty cheap to make
thing is aside from this device, what would they need a 3:2 screen for
well, shells too, but yeah
And shells of course
well the 351p was a hit and it wasn't specifically a gba device
not really, it was an upgrade from the 350p
people were happy just to be able to play stuff on these properly
there wasn't even a 4:3 option available
that's what I'm saying, but these days we have them run stuff properly at all kind of shapes, sizes and screens have to be good for what you want to play
this arguably is a great one in itself, but the screen real estate on 4:3 stuff is what? 2.8"?
doesn't makes too much sense to use it on devices that aren't GBA-ish
well we've been crying for a 3:2 option forever lol
they might make a second sp with this screen, i dunno
being 480p also makes it a great screen for 4:3 anyway
yeah, but as said, what size, I assume 2.8"
yep lmao
pretty great for PSX arguably
the good thing about 3:2 is it's not only perfect for gba
but NES is indeed 2.8"
it's also pretty great for 4:3 and for 16:9
any black lines are tiny unless you're talking about squareish ratios
not arguing against that, I love 3:2 screens
wish we would move away from 16:9 on literally everything but TVs
if i played snes on it i'd just stretch it to 4:3 even if i like 8:7 better
i wish 16:10 was the standard for monitors
rather would go 3:2, but yeah 16:10 is already a bit better
it's just more modern (and deck screen)
it's basically the same aspect ratio otherwise, but more common on pc
The offset B on the button triggers me
that's just a degenerate edit
btw i think i'm gonna call this the rule34xxx
The proportion feels a bit weird but I still want one.
i wish i only wanted one and not every color
btw, this is probably the best color lineup by anbernic, they're all good
wish they would have gone with white and glacier instead of red/green tho
funky transparent colors could have been the 2nd batch
first batch should have been dedicated nostalgia fuel
where did they find this screen? first the 960x720 now this...
Maybe one day.......
its a very cool device as is, but i hope there's a non-nostalgia version coming later without the giant lips on the top and bottom, plus sticks
ewwww you owe me 20 bucks for making me imagine how that would look
first I demand the chonky boy from Anbernic
with retroid sticks and stacked triggers maybe
that would be cool with this 3:2 screen too btw
would be a good one and done
what if ayaneo micro but not a brick
the 4" screen they have is honestly a better fit for their Android devices IMO
btw what are the odds, that we can use the GCN colored RP5 to play Four Swords on there and use the rg34xx as a controller? 😂
I’m buying this thing for only GBA lol
fair enough, but it's nevertheless nice that the 720x480 is good for other systems too
well it kinda ruins anything 16:9
though tbh it would be around the same size on a 3,4 inch 3:2
we just need anbernic to get the ktr1 screen
960x720 works pretty nicely for a lot of stuff IMO
uncanny valley GBA
ayn odin 2 mini's grandpa
Well
