#The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
I got 40 bombs early enough that I was actually using them as a general weapon ||like in that part of Jabu-Jabu's belly where your sword and slingshot don't do shit and you have electric monsters all over you and you're just trying to find the boomerang or at least a map||
Seriously, for such a small dungeon, it's a bloody maze at first and constantly trying to deal with monsters you can barely do anything about doesn't help
Throw the princess at everything
Forest Temple got me good
I'm not sure if that frustrating bullshit with the keys is good design or not, because it sure as hell is clever
||if you give up and save and quit and restart, you begin right in the room with the key you probably missed||
Spend 20 minutes catching chickens, couldn't figure how to get to them all until I randomly jump with one in my hands, then entered a hole in ground, chickens respawned in their old places, except one, who respawned in the texture of a box, and I could get him. Fml
A future item may be useful
The box is destroyable
How?
Bomb
OK, I didn't have bombs, thanks though
Roll into it
What I thought you always begin at the entrance of the dungeon
There’s a SoH setting to start in the last room you entered. Maybe it’s that
oh right. This is very specific to this key and this dungeon
||there's a key in the first room that a lot of people miss when they dont have the compass yet||
Because it doesn't look like you're inside yet
There is a place where you need bombchus, but IIRC there is a chest with them right there too. It’s ||in Ganon’s castle||
Oh I just googled it and there is another place where they’re required in ||the spirit temple||
If you look at the counter when starting the game it displays what prize you can win during that game. I think it rotates through 5 different items
Yep, I banged my head against it for a half an hour and then decided to preserve sanity resource
That is how the shooting gallery games have been to me. Maybe I will turn on gyro for them.
This proved invaluable, thank you
I got a perfect score on both of the shooting gallery mini-games in Majora's Mask, using this controller.
😛
Worst controller of all time for Mischief Makers
That's why I also have a first party N64 controller. 😛
In the Shooting Gallery in Clock Town, you can play an archery game where you shoot Octoroks for points. You have unlimited arrows, but the game is far from easy. If you shoot a blue Octorok, you lose time, and the Octoroks only appear for a short amount of time before disappearing.
If you shoot 40 or more of the 50 Octoroks, you get an upgrade...
i still have like 30 skulltulas left but only 4 heart pieces left lol im clearly screwing up the skulltulas. cleared spirit temple but missed a skulltula there too... i think i might need ||hammer|| tho there's something i cant do without it
So you're going for 100% completion too?
Scarecrow shit ||y'all really gonna make me remember my own damn horrible music||
yeah. skulltulas are wack tho lol but im gonna power through it i guess, ive just got 4 more heart pieces and ||2 great fairies|| left outside of that (and two main dungeons)
SHAKE SHAKE
I leveled up with that message
As you should
god bless mischief makers
around in a circle with the c buttons, then A three times.
I just did a counter-clockwise circle with the C-buttons (×2) in OoT, and I did Zelda's Lullaby in Majora's Mask. c:
you two are probably right
can't sound any worse than my A left right A left right up down nonsense
You can always just check in the list of songs, no?
I don't know that Scarecrow's Song is actually recorded in the list. it wasn't when I looked, but I might be blind
No, I'm pretty sure that you have to either memorize it or write it down, or talk to the scarecrow again and make a new song.
I never seen it on the list.
We're cooking with gas now. Just found about a certain well entity.
Yeah you gotta memorize your own song.
I have to admit. This is a hot take so I will hid it. ||This game is a lot better than BoTW to me.||
I 100% agree. ||I think BotW is a good game, but sandbox games aren't my jam, so I think almost every other zelda game with the traditional formula are more fun.||
The traditional formula is what I like about the LoZ games. ||Themed dungeons are my favorite.||
Yep, same here. Nintendo doesn't seem to understand that many LoZ fans enjoy the series specifically because of the traditional formula.
Nintendo magic + item progression + themed dungeons + good music = a good time. :3
I think plenty of people like the new formula
I don't think Nintendo was wrong to depart from the traditional formula. The traditional formula having nothing wrong with it doesn't mean they had great ideas for what new to do with that traditional formula, and, as this server is very much about, those old games are still around.
the new formula is great and still has room to improve
They just didn't want to do more of the same but with more modern graphics
the difference between dungeon design, story, etc from BotW to TotK was huge imo
and it should only get better
I didn't notice much of a change in dungeons in ToTK. I only played it for like 5 hours. So maybe I missed something later on. Just all feels repetitive after 3 of them.
They have the same reasoning behind Metroid, F-Zero, and Star Fox. They don't have to reinvent the wheel to justify a new game in a series.
And if they feel like they need to then those games just don't get made, so you're left replaying the old ones over and over.
At least with Metroid they eventually caved to fans and gave them new, quality mainline Metroid games.
Metroid sells very bad compare to LoZ
I meant that the dungeons themselves were very same-y in BotW because the game was designed around you doing them in any order so there was nothing themed around specific items, etc
TotK had that too, but I felt the dungeons were more themed (fire, water, themed, etc) and felt like four distinct places instead of different beasts that looked the same internally
Also the ultrahand system is bananas and way better than most physics sandbox stuff
but that's a matter of opinion
I just need more in my sandbox to do. Too much sand and not enought toys in BotW to me.
I've never been more technically impressed while simultaneously let down by a game mechanic than ultra hand. To me, most Zelda puzzles pay off immediately when you figure them out. Ultra hand puzzles were usually super easy to tell how to solve, but then comparatively clunky to actually execute, which took me out of the flow and diminished the fun factor
it had its moments, but I didn't love it as the main gimmick of TotK
my resposne was covered in saying that it is a matter of opinion
but not every main gimmick is a success story when it comes to Zelda
Skyward Sword suffered immensely because of it
I can't spell apparently
i think the new and old formulas can and should coexist tbh. there are different sort of "genres" of mario game that coexist, the same could be true for zelda. personally i would love a new 2d zelda
New 2d HD would be great.
yeah. or even if its 3d graphics like the links awakening remake or albw just top-down perspective
I just hope they keep making classic style zelda games. I'm fine if they make new style too, even if I don't like them as much. But we have only had remakes of classic zelda games since BotW came out, no new games in the classic style
Is there a way to keep it night in SoH? I want to try this https://youtube.com/shorts/HssA8l9QXM0?si=zgwhO0sgroy9fEZ1
part of it is i think they're afraid to give the zelda reigns to another developer like they did with metroid outside of spinoffs and remakes. so the big massive timesink game development like botw is all they can do, there's no bandwidth for smaller games
like there used to be in the gbc/gba era with the capcom codeveloped ones
I get that games have to change or else fans get mad. Look at pokemon games. Like RE4 or 2018 GoW made major changes to the formula that fans like. But I am the old man yelling at clouds.
lol, same. Maybe its time to checkout some of the zelda-like games from people besides nintendo
Maybe if I finish this and samurai, I'll start Okami
darksiders was pretty fun
I was reading that OoT had like 500 people working on it during it's development. Most people Nintendo has ever used to make a game.
zelda with god of war combat basically
oh yeah, I think I have at least the first two of those in my steam library and have never tried them
which god of war?
older. arguably maybe a little mroe like devil may cry combat actually? but hack n slash combat
Nice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRhdtFrjKlU but yeah good mix of zelda-like progression w dungeons and stuff but with hack n slash combat. not the most original game or anything but i had fun with it
When you've played too much DMC4, got sick of it and want something else for a change. :)
As I said I love this game and even though the Warmastered version is buggy on most AMD GPU's, I still have the vanilla version and I can transfer the save files at any time. Until it is fixed I'll upload some more videos showcasing the combat system in th...
I know for 2d games there are also several games made for the solarus engine. I've played a little bit of Ocean's Heart (which I think is even available in Portmaster and plays on really low spec devices) and it seemed polished, but lacked some charm or something, so I didn't get very far.
yeah for 2d zelda-likes i did the first few dungeons of blossom tale and it never really clicked.
death's door is cool but is only lightly zelda-like i guess, its more like an isometric soulslike.
Anodyne is really good but moreso in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere, it doesnt really have much in the way of dungeon items. it's zelda meets yume nikkie basically
ittle dew 1 is really good but more a puzzle game within the zelda formula, ittle dew 2 tries to be too many things at once and suffers a bit for it but its still pretty good
racheteer on playdate is cool but its on playdate so thats not an option for everyone lol
need to try some solarus stuff
I been flowing Dragonyhm (more rpg than adventure)
ive heard really good things about eastward but im not sure if thats a zeldalike
How about Crusader of Centy and Gunman's Proof?
We played Gunman here. It was alright.
well yeah if u want to go retro there's those, beyond oasis, neutopia, golden axe warrior. i need to give centy a shot, neutopia was kind of bland, gunman's proof is okay. beyond oasis i need to give another shot but it was kinda janky feeling
We played Centy too (I didn't, but it did win)
I liked Beyond Oasis. Fighting felt more like a beat em up. I'd like to try golden axe warrior
i keep starting sylvan tale on game gear and liking it but getting distracted by other stuff
I've played a little golden axe warrior and it's probably great if u really like Zelda 1 but I got into Zelda with the later ones
anyone try Hime's Quest?
Did that friggin ||Dampe's race|| without ||longshot||. Sidehopping and ||warp song cheat|| helped to do so
Also what I played of Alundra rules but I want to shill it for gotm eventually. It's been so long I might just play it now tho I guess lol
oh yeah, Alundra is another one I've heard really good things about and would like to play
Didn't know it existed lol. Crunchyroll?
What's with these corporations commissioning gbc games lol there was the McDonald's one too
Yep. Just saw it today.
Alundra is fine but, mild spoilers, ||that story is so frigging dark||
Smith & maybe it is time to try again?
Yeah I didn't get super deep into it but it's like Zelda gameplay but edgy ps1 JRPG narrative
I definitely wouldn't, I've tired of that kinds of stories. I like Oasis/Story of Thor series, they are kinda lighthearthed
I meant to nominated it for GotM
Maybe, gameplay is kind of Zelda so maybe ppl who tired of original would look on ripoffs
I should give another try to Light Crusader from Genesis/MegaDrive, tried but never finished
landstalker is from the same devs as Alundra and is very lighthearted... But it's isometric lol
isometric in retro games is always a bit frustating
Good thing my song is a a a a a a
yeah lol. ive tried some Equinox and it is really cool but my brain cant get used to the isometric
Syndicate is that way without the mouse. The SNES and Genesis games aren't great to control
I recall Shadowrun, SNES version (like it more that MD). Game is great, control scheme is not
That one also. I always wanted to play the table top game of Shadowrun
OoT 2D has been abandoned?
Sounds like something a C&D would have taken care of if it was
I think that is what happened
my rp2s will be here soon and im gonna do my best to finish it for the first time!! always got stuck in the water temple when i was like 6 and haven’t played in almost 20 years
I think they released a demo and got shut down hours later
I was watching a youtube video of the demo looked great.
Feels wild that some people here weren't there for Centy on gotm. Feels like yesterday
Crusader of Centy won GotM in January 2022.
Bruh
Anyway the game is tedious. It's a 6/10 but even that is enough when you're the closest thing to zelda on a console without zelda
Yeah that was before I was here
That was when I was just getting started on GotM. I remember seeing it won and trying it, but not finishing. My first GotM game was outrun either that month or the next month
OutRun won GotM in April 2022.
ok, 2 months later
Mine was I think September 2022? Oracle of ages
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages won GotM in September 2022.
Forest Temple done ||saira will always be my friend, awwwwww||
There was one golden skulldugula that I just couldn’t find, so maybe I won’t try and get them all
Nice job! I am still looking for that key lol. Maybe having the bow will help me
Let me know if you want a hint
The key that I missed was really stupid ||was on one of the trees at the beginning of the temple ||
I did the same, but I needed that one to get the bow
Was stuck literally on the same place lold
Finished. Had a good time doing a run with minimal upgrades, so I actually had to try not to get hit by the last few bosses. Ended up with no deaths. I basically just got heart containers and skulltullas that weren’t out of the way and didn’t bother with most side quests
No four min eye drops?
nope, combination of just wanting to plow through dungeons and wanting a little more challenge
Nice.
do i really need the big wallet eventually.? or can i beat game wihtout it
im very lazy about the skultullas
i think you can beat the game without it cuz i think you can get ||both tunics|| for free
It's not a huge deal, honestly. But they're not hard to get
If you want to know how how to get each, ||the 200-rupee wallet is at like 10 skulltulas and the 500-rupee wallet is at like 30 skulltulas||
but yeah without even trying you can probably get the first wallet pretty fast
You should be able to get the first one with fairly minimal effort, and the second should come fairly naturally even if you're not scouring areas for skulltulas
Just travel through areas at night when you can, roll into the occasional tree, listen for that skittering noise, etc.
I know, but it im really going mostly temple to temple with no so much exploration haha.. im already on the fire temple and have 9 Skulltulas
i have 70 and i havent done fire temple yet lmao (tho i did do some dungeons "ahead" of it)
because it's really weird that you made it that far without even ten skulltulas tbh
Like you should come by more than ten skulltulas at that point purely by accident even if you're not looking for them
I know there's a deaf person here and if you're deaf you actually do have an excuse for not finding skulltulas on accident but if you aren't, like. wtf
are you playing with sound off
Hahaha I see them but I’m not grabbing them, unless they’re literally next to me
Then I remember that to extend the wallet you needed them
OK just. Grab them
but yeah you clearly already got the free goron tunic then and u can get the other tunic free if you ||thaw king zora with the blue fire from the ice cavern||
but be very very very careful about like likes lmao
But I think I can get everything without going to the store right, like both blue and red tunics , boots, etc.
I'd give you some ideas for where to start looking, but honestly most areas have a handful of skulltulas to get. If you did a bit of backtracking you'd probably get 30 pretty quickly
I mean, you've got the blue and red tunics, right?
yeah just dont get like liked and lose the tunics lol
Yeah
idk if u need them after their respective dungeons i guess??? i forget if ganons tower uses them
Oh yeah the like likes eat those tunics and shields right
yeah
Also, I learned a thing, for people using the right stick as C-buttons
if u kill them fast enough after they'll drop them again tho
Because I had huge issues with accidentally hitting the wrong C-button
turn up your dead zone
I doubled the dead zone area in Harkinian's settings and clicked the button to use stick dead zones when using the stick as C-buttons
and like likes cant eat ||mirror shield||
huge and immediate improvement
TIL like likes can eat tunics
yeah makes sense. i just prefer not to use c-stick as c buttons tho tbh. putting two on the face buttons one as a shoulder makes sense, i usually use whatever my current ranged weapon is on the shoulder
Honestly? Super-legit. If I were sane, I'd do that and just relearn how to use them. The ocarina might be the hard part to relearn tho
Oh wait, I can actually just play the ocarina with the D-pad
yeah
occasionally i get confused about which item i have on which button and accidentally waste a bomb or something but its been no big deal
Hmm, considering what to do with my shield
I actually find it easier to hit triggers than bumpers and have gotten lazy about keeping myself accustomed to bumpers since my Dark Souls days
I'd probably put the item on the right trigger, so I could put the shield on the right bumper or I could... not
i have shield and target on the triggers, and an item and navi/first person on bumpers
Hmm.
Honestly, I might do shield on bumper because shooting on right trigger feels a bit more intuitive
i dont shield that often tho cuz ive been running ||biggorons sword|| for most of the game lol
but I've been using the right trigger for my shield all this time, so there might be some relearning
See, I just got Biggoron's Sword
i got it before i did any of the adult dungeons lol
I'm just starting the Fire Temple (I did Water Temple first)
just to see if i could
Wait, you can get it without the longshot?
I was the same until I put the items I consistently did that with (say bombs) on the d-pad. Helps a lot for me at least
See I didn't even get Epona until after the Forest Temple
I really should have gotten her sooner because I was traipsing around the field on foot a lot
yeah i have played this game enough to go for epona first hting. idk tho ive been liking this game more than i did last time i played it for whatever reason lol. idk i had it in my head that it didnt hold up that well cuz i was remembering the janky bits but the overall experience is still really good
...oh right, if I bind target and shield unevenly then it'll fuck up menu navigation. shit
ohhhh yeah actually lol
it's been like 20 years since I last played it, so I didn't actually remember how to get Epona
I did eventually figure it out, but not until after I'd already wandered around a lot and did the first temple
Also I would not have thought to run Epona across a canyon
i think my last playthrough was actually master quest but i did the main quest probably 10 or so years ago, maybe a bit more. after i got my 3ds but it was al ittle after launch
ngl, Biggoron's Sword would've made the Water Temple boss marginally less of a cock waffle
might've made some bubbles a bit less of a pain too
biggorons sword makes some of the bosses too easy lol. spirit temple boss even took like two cycles
also Biggoron's Sword lets you ||just go lol when Ganon knocks the Master Sword away||
(I do remember that part)
yeah lol. it makes ||dark link|| really easy too
he might have been kinda tough for you without that or ||hammer||
I used ||the bow for Dark Link||
right yeah i forgot that works too
||He doesn't defend himself against the bow well at all||
mmf. Making bumpers things I have to keep a finger on all the time makes my grip feel weird
but yeah idk the sense of scale in this game for the time is kind of crazy for a full 3d game. its a huge world and its generally pretty fun to navigate (tho hyrule field is boring). i think before i got deeper down the retro gaming rabithole i didnt realise how crazy this game was at the time lol cuz i was too young to really remember it new
but compared to other stuff coming out around the same time the size and scope of the world stands out, and the freedom (even if game progression itself is semi-linear at least)
||the hammer|| works well enough for ||dark link and ganon|| I thought. The boss fights were longer than I remembered this time since I didn't get the ||big goron sword||, but honestly, they felt more like boss fights that way
I picked this one up day one, and you are right. It was mind blowing. I remember reading that it took more than a "game day" to run across the world and having to confirm that myself. Nowadays hyrule field being empty feels a bit weird, but at the time it was really novel to have that much freedom, even if there wasn't much to do
yeah i dont really like any of the boss fights in this game anyway tho lol so im down to make them shorter. except ||barinade|| is kinda cool for how early in the game he is i guess? feels like a bit of a "shit's getting real" moment. and ||phantom ganon|| has cool mood. MM has wayyyyy better bosses
oh yeah i remember ||bongo bongo|| being fun too but i havent done that yet
Once you know how to handle them, they're all really easy. But I do remember having a big sense of satisfaction figuring out how to beat ||phantom ganon|| and ||twinrova|| the first time
All right, remapped my C button stuff to make space for my right stick to aim (and take gyro input)
just plucked a fire keese out of the air without Z-targeting
this gyro shit is great
yeah lol
took a little bit to set up but nice
im playing on android so it was easy, just had to turn down the sens a little. but yeah that was a big thing i remember liking from the 3ds version lol
this would've been nice at the shooting galleries, but let's be real, their difficulty was calibrated around aiming with the stick
yeah they are pathetic with gyro lol
I'm on Steam Deck so unfortunately it doesn't seem to natively take the gyro input; you have to map the gyro to something
and I couldn't map it to the camera stick as long as I was using the C stick for items
yeah im playing on rp3+ where i cant turn off draw distance or else hyrule field drops frames lol so there's tradeoffs
Just wrapped up || spirit temple. Boy, it was an absolute cakewalk. Really disappointing after shadow temple was so strong. ||
I feel lame for not having done this sooner
yeah i felt the same lol. my last playthrough was master quest and i know that was way harder than the original but i was still expecting more from the original
it was kinda nuts in master quest iirc
It felt like the ||light puzzles|| got used maybe twice through the whole dungeon? I know the main gimmick is going ||back and forth through time|| but I was expecting more, especially since it's the last proper dungeon. Ah well, onto ||Ganon trials||
its a common theory that it and ||shadow temple|| got swapped late in development. and really you can do them both in either order anyway
I like the feel of the spirit temple, but it is VERY straightforward
yeah the vibe is cool. and again the masterquest version is super tough iirc
The boss door placement is stupid
and feels better for its position in the game
I guess they didn't want to do the ||dark, gritty shadow temple then straight to Ganon's castle, since it's kinda samey||
except for maybe ||the enemies that have to be burned, but since you can use the fire arrows on them, they are extra easy instead of a challenging puzzle||
I don't remember ever having trouble with that
Well you have that one when you are a child
all the ||magic arrows|| are so underbaked in this game. they course corrected on that in majoras mask lol
Not trouble just if you fall down or need to restock stuff you have to run all the way back up through the temple
Light arrows make you rich
if u arent already rich by then what are u doing tho lol
Fishing ?
In SoH, you can make ||Ice Arrows|| into ||Blue fire arrows||, and ||light arrows|| into ||Sunlight arrows||, which still isn't helpful, unless you're doing a randomizer and don't have bottles or ||Mirror Shield||
Well that’s just cheating
But by the time you get any of the original items, the dual usage is pointless lol
i might try randomizer again after this lol. tried it a few years ago and realised i dont know the game well enough but 100%ing it now i might have a better feel for it. tho i still dont fully understand the logic and i feel like its got to be pretty complicated lol
i had an alttp randomizer phase a few years ago and learning to read the seeds was an important skill
if you play glitchless logic and put some basic restrictions it's not that bad to start
and soh gives you a list of checks (probably easier to do this on desktop though)
Eastward is like if Zelda and Earthbound had a deformed baby. If you want to play a good Zelda-like, I always strongly recommend CrossCode, that game is very underrated.
Randomizers are fun to watch, not sure if I would ever want to spend the time learning everything there is though.
is it possible to patch an n64 rom with ship of harkinian
from following mayorice's playthrough, it sounds like the redux romhack has many of the same qol changes
@forest walrus played it
oot redux lets u do most of SoHs qol improvements
radical
but u cant get 60fps lol. what hardware are u planning to play on? soh on android has pretty low requirements i think
was hoping to do 353 vs on jelOS
oh yeah fair then
so OOT redux would be my best bet
Got that one early .
But at least one key is still missing lol.
I had the exact same problem
I think I said earlier at one point that, like... I'm not sure if the design is good or not but it was clever
because when you give up and save and quit, ||you restart right in the same room as the key you probably missed||, which is kinda wild
yeah. hopefully ship of harkinian ends up in portmaster eventually tho lol
There's a way to cheese the Water Temple boss, just FYI.
In retrospect, what was it?
||You can keep using the Hookshot to keep the ball thing stunned, then get it into a corner while you move around it so that you're facing the corner before you start slashing it, that way it'll be stuck in the corner while you keep slashing it because it won't be able to retreat, allowing you to defeat the boss incredibly fast||
water temple boss is the worse so far to me. The temple wasn't so bad. You don't have to use the boots all the time. You can just drive if you have the lunker or whatere it's called.
yeah gold scale comes in clutch there (and like only there lmao its such a weird item to even exist??)
once again majoras mask improved on underwater gameplay so so much and then the 3ds version backslid on that lmao for some reason. its like they set out with MM to fix some of the bigger issues with oot and then they set out with the 3ds version to unfix them
You can get a 1/4 heart piece also if you know where to look.
if its the ||zora fountain|| one cant u also just use iron boots for that
oh u mean the ||lab|| one yeah i got that im dumb
Two if I am remembering
all right, I'm missing something but oh god what
||Fire Temple. The start of the Fire Temple. You know what I'm talking about||
This
At lease SoH makes the game not so dark looking, easy to see in the water.
are you going out of order?
||I remember freeing a Goron in the upper left corner of the room at the start of the Fire Temple 🤔||
I notice that all temples if you work ||counter clock wise|| you will not get stuck that much. Only done Wood, Fire and Water so far.
||I've already done Forest Temple. I did Water Temple before Fire Temple but that's not the issue here||
I'll keep this in mind
||OK, if it's the one I'm thinking of, they have to be freed from the other side?||
OK, I see what I was doing wrong now
||apparently using the Song of Time to open the path to the gold skulltula/Like-Like/poltergeist floor tile room also blocks off another path||
yeah i had forgotten how much the main game uses ||song of time blocks|| lol i remember them being way more common in master quest
yeah it is used a lot. This is my frist play throught
Majora's Mask has Redux hack also
how are u liking it btw? i know milkwalker bailed lol but u seem into it at least
I like it . Milk bailes fast on most games
fair lol
The annoying parts have worn off.
yeah idk the annoying parts bothered me more last time i played it but ive learned to kind of apprecaite a level of annoyance in games. some of my previous "annoyance" is just the game punishing me for fucking up
Yeah, having to watch up top all the time gets annoying. When I was doing the eye drops. I couldn’t get off the horse. Wasted like 15 seconds
yeah fair. i didnt find any of the trade sequence too taxing tho. i think eyedrops maybe took me two tries
I got it with like 5 seconds left.
Guys I just got the silver gauntlets. How many hours left if I don't chase extra stuff?
That's Spirit Temple, right?
like 1 probably if that's your last medallion
Yeah, if you just have Ganon's Castle left (or whatever it's called) then I'd say 60-90 minutes.
I had some difficulty with the fire room in Ganon's Castle.
Just wrapped up, what a game! Never beat it all the through, but glad I did. Probably won't go for 100%, but I really enjoyed my time with it. Hope the SoH team get Majora's Mask done soon, I'm eager to try it out!
Congrats! 🎉🥳
Majora's Mask is memorable, but personally I'm really looking forward to playing OoT Master Quest at some point. c:
IVE SPENT 5 HOURS TRYING TO CATCH THIS FISH
OR ANY FISH OVER 13 POUNDS
Credit where credit is due: This may be the hardest video game challenge I've ever faced
Is there any logical reason why adult link would be unable to hold a literal stick
I'm pretty sure SoH and Redux make it super easy to catch the big fish.
As long as you know where the biggest fish are located, then you can just continue resetting the fish locations by exiting and re-entering the fishing pond area until you succeed in catching it.
Oh Water Temple …. We meet again, after 22 years…
(Nightmares begin…)
As a Kid it took me a month to beat this, no tutorials or anything. Just every night after school losing myself trying to find the solution to the puzzle
Good luck. c: 🤞
Yeah, but its costing me arm and a leg
I got the gold scale and then barely even used it because SoH makes it so easy to just turn your iron boots on and off with a little D-pad press
We did it gang. Full life crew. I was racing all over trying to find out which I missed and it was of course, the bombchus
I actually finished OoT. It was a good time, except for the camera, which was dog shit.
just hit Z button a lot.
If I hit the Z button one more time I'll go into a coma.
Congrats! 🎉
With you make the traditional cartoon “zzzzzzzz” when you do?
The expected rp4 trigger failure has hit
I have to remap everything it's frying my brain
RIP trigger
Exactly.
Water temple down
Was it easy or difficult
eh... I never look forward to it. I'll just say that.
I remembered the part that normally catches me so it wasn't as bad as it normally is for me :P
So, Iron Knuckles.
||How do you all like to fight them? Actually engage with evasion and swordplay, or just fling bombs at their slow ass?||
Those spiky silver balls that turn into stones?
||the big armored things with axes in the Spirit Temple||
Ooohh
backflip + jump attack. a friend tried to tell me a more efficient way to fight them at one point but I couldn't be bothered 😛
Yep, backflips and jump attacks.
that's kinda what I did yeah
Back flip + poke attack for me
But biggoron makes most fights simple af
Poke poke poke
Yeah, it has a lot of reach. I wasn't expecting the bigass sword to be as safe as it is
But it seems like sometimes the reach alone is better than a shield, let alone the raw power
The ||crouch stab|| is really powerful too, just FYI. It's a great way to quickly defeat Ganon (1st phase) and Phantom Ganon (2nd phase).
But yeah, just did the (part of Spirit Temple) ||kid portion of this dungeon. When I was kid Link's age I appreciated actually having to go back to that time period. You can imagine I really liked Majora's Mask expanding on kid Link and his mechanics||
yeah MM just lets kid link do everything adult link did lol. and then combined some of the items that didnt come back into the mask transformations
Finally got the boss key in water temple. That final small key forced me to cycle it all over
Finally playing through OOT I am sorta realising why I prefer either 2D Zeldas or Breath of the Wild. Here I often end up stumbling over game logic (walls being climbable, a jump being doable) that occasionally stumps my progress in dungeons.
I am having fun and yes of course this game was revolutionary back when it came out but even with the QOL of the 3ds version I feel like it has definitely aged
I like this more than BotW. But we had this conversion like yesterday. I think.
I think my perfect Zelda would be something like Ocarina of Time with maybe 30 percent more story interspersed between temples and dungeons.
We did talk about other zeldas and zelda likes sometime recently, and for some reason I didn't think of the indie dungeon designers. Think Mario Maker, but for (off brand) zelda dungeons. I know of two that are out now (Super Dungeon Designer and Super Dungeon Maker) and one not out yet but with a demo (Quest Master). I haven't tried any of them. Curious if anyone else has?
There a lot of things that you can do outside of this. Like do you know why the spooky mask is so spooky?
I bet without google most people can't tell me why.
Talking to every character while wearing a specific mask just to see what they say isn't exactly my idea of good main story content. It is an interesting detail that has cool lore implications but not what I'm talking about.
I bet without google you wouldn’t know good story content
Destiny 2 all over again.
I mean you talk to a couple of people, that says the mask is made of wood. You talk to the character who makes things out of wood and creepy city. As a child maybe harder to do. As adult it is a nice added feature.
Just beat the Deku tree dungeon (on 3ds). I beat this game recently so I don't think I'm gonna keep going.
I'm like 1/3 the way through Twilight Princess HD so I think I'll just focus on that this month.
Best 3D LoZ
I'm enjoying it so far.
I liked it
||I thought it looked kind of like a ReDead but I might be full of shit||
TP would be so much better without the wolf parts. Basically just easter egg hunts. My only gripe.
I agree. The wolf part knocks TP out of the top tier of zelda games for me. Still a great game though
Honestly comparing TP to OoT 3D, they have a lot of the same DNA. Like, they are very similar games and don't look terribly different.
I didn't mine the wolf parts. Like the water temple it is blown out of water.
yeah i think TP was in some ways an active attempt to call back to OoT. definitely in terms of the more "mature" art style again and the structure with 3 "initial" dungeons and then something big happens and theres way more
LttP also had the three early dungeons before a big shift
I just mean TP basically takes place in the same place and time as OoT, in a way that Wind Waker doesn't.
OoT wins for me but I'm sure that mostly has to do with nostalgia. Otherwise I'd say WW is next for me. I'm more of a fan of the old zelda formula. I like botw and totk well enough but I prefer OoT, WW, and TP.
i really like MM but its been a while. wind waker i was never too big on
i still have to play skyward sword lol
Yeah, MM is up with those as well. I can't really recommend SS lol
ive heard very mixed things about it lol, mixed enough that i feel like i have to play it for myself to decide lol
but a lot of people are definitely with u on that
That and Zelda 2 have to be the worst imo
Hey guys we added QoL changes to the switch release but you have to buy our hunk of plastic for it
i think spirit tracks is my least favourite
Oh and the game is full price again too
Nah phantom hour glass was the worse of the two ds ones
yeah, spirit tracks wasn't great.
I think phantom hour glass was OK but I get why someone wouldn't like it
I kind of like it for some strange reason. I also like Zelda 2 a lot.
i liked phantom hourglass more. didnt mind the ocean temple or whatever as much as some people seem to, i liked the ship more than i liked the train
yeah i like zelda 2
im also not really that big on minish cap honestly. replayed it for goty last year and yeah its still kind of underwhelming to me
I think of Zelda 2 as a early rougelite game
haha this is pretty good
it's really not that bad. Just hard and not much of a zelda game for me.
Skyward Sword (Switch) is up next for me, after I finish TP.
Didn’t Wind Waker also have 3 initial dungeons? Most of the 3d games followed the blueprint created in ALttP
I tried skyward sword on the Wii and switch and never made it to the second dungeon either time. I thought using the joystick instead of waggle controls would make it better, but I still found the sword direction stuff to be annoying. Especially the first boss I could tell what I needed to do, but couldn’t execute it.
I also like Zelda 2, even though I had to save scum a bit to beat it.
Skyward sword was very much Nintendo being Nintendo. They had a system and wanted to show off its gimmick. The motion controls definitely ruined a game I otherwise enjoyed. The switch version was a huge improvement, but the Wii’s gimmick still held it back
yeah i didnt get through tp originally cuz i had the wii version and the controls were awful
didnt finish it until i played the gc version years later
When I played TP over 10 years ago it was the Wii version and I didn't have a problem with the controls. 😛
Some people like motion controls
shadow temple done
i dont mind good motion controls but when its literally just using a waggle toreplace a button press its just stupid
the motion was nice for like, the gale boomerang and stuff. but to me it made the moment to moment gameplay actively worse when they force it for swordplay without actually having the swordplay really use motion controls.
I played twilight princess for the first time on the Wii with motion controls and didn't love it, but it wasn't a barrier like it was in skyward sword.
Skyward Sword was designed for the Wii. Twilight Princess was a GameCube game with some motion controls slapped on top of it
yeah exactly. it showed in tp wii really hard because there was no advantage to using motion controls. there was no value add to 90% of it it was literally just mapping things that used to be button presses
LFG
fellas pray for me, I started the water temple
It really not that bad
it isn't but I'm an oaf that gets turned around a lot
Is there a way in SoH to make items from pots in dungeons respawn? like I die, go at it again, all the enemies are respawned but pots no longer give me health
Probably not. It's the same way in the original game.
Question 2: do shields break?
in difficulty settings, there's an option to respawn with full health
the deku shield can burn
Shields don't break, but like Tao said, the Deku Shield can catch on fire, then you gotta buy a new one.
Thanks guys, was wondering why my shield was suddenly gone in the middle of the dungeon.
Like likes can also eat the hyrule shield
No but at least you can make them not disappear . So you can leave them there and pick them up later
Honestly I just put on infinite health, I don't have time for it to be challenging with a deadline
All you need is a bottle with a fairy in it and you should be fine. 😛
Better yet you could Google where to get all of the empty bottles in OoT.
My RP4's second trigger is dying
I'm never getting a replacement backplate in time it's over for my streak
unless i finish on my phone or something
and that's when the decision to get a 3" phone comes back to bite me
oh wait it's fine guys
i just mapped Z to R3
it's very wrong but i need to finish
Map Z to L1? You don’t need L anyway.
I just realized that I have no memory of where the fourth bottle is
Honestly, it doesn't matter. I'm in the Final Dungeon and should just clear it and call it a day
Three fairies in bottles should be more than sufficient
actually maybe I'll bring a single blue potion just in case. I actually have to use my magic power occasionally now
Did you do the ghost hunting?
||I got like 300-400 points||
||I probably don't need it enough to justify grinding out another six or seven big poes||
Probably not. Just that is the one you're missing
fair enough, thanks
I genuinely can’t believe you’re choosing to play a 27 hour game with infinite health just to get a GOTm point, rather than the 4 hour game which is available elsewhere
this game is nowhere near hard enough to justify an infinite health cheat tbh
A thousand percent this
Look I'm not gonna sit here and claim I'm better than you or go on on the Sekiro Difficulty Rant, I'm just squinting a bit
Sekiro
Ooooooohhhhh
But I think it’s implied
If you mean Way of the Samurai, I'm playing that too. And I'm not playing it for the point, Ocarina that is. I'm playing it, because it's a classic and I want to experience it, not drop it after 2h. Even if Zelda games perhaps are not for me, I'm clueless in them, I need a guide, and I find a number of design choices to be super annoying, this is my first 3D one, and I at least want to complete it (even with cheats) before I decide to drop the series completely.
As a player, I just hate repeating stuff, that why grind based games are not for me. So playing this outside gotm, I'd probably reach a dungeon, made an attempt, die, quit. Try again the next day. I would have beaten in, but in 30 days I don't have time to waste 15 days on a single dungeon, and I'm not gonna force a bad time on myself because some nintendo brains decided to not give you any more hearts from the pots after you fail once to make it cHaLleNgInG... fun > challenge every day
Play your own way. Everyone has different preferences for how much enhancement retro games should have.
You are not wrong
I dunno man, applying infinite Heath cheats seems over the line of “everyone plays their own way” to me, but also I’m one dude in a community, I’m not a rule maker
Also final battle intro ||I actually kinda dig that Ganon is just playing the organ waiting for us because he wants a dramatic intro||
||Like it straddles the line between dramatic and silly in a fun way||
Why not just use Zelda Dungeon's walkthrough instead of using infinite health? At least that way you'd get a more accurate experience. 🤷
GOTm specifies which versions of a game are acceptable, it’s not a case of “whatever version I play it’s playing my own way”
GOTm specifies which endings are acceptable it’s not a case of “whatever ending I feel is acceptable is acceptable”
cheats feel like that to me, beyond “do as you please”
I think the big supprise here is that you consider oot a “grind based game”
Using Zelda Dungeon's walkthrough is how I played OoT the first time on 3DS 10 years ago, and I still fell in love with the game.
Is there a rule about what emulator/remake enhancements are acceptable?
It was just random example, probably out of place in that sentence, but I guess you can grind hearts if you know what you are doing and have like 10 instead 4 that I had
Up to the admin’s discretion. We had to pitch the base version of SoH to rapid for approval, for example
For Metroid prime we has to check that both the Wii and switch were eligible - again as an example
I personally agree that OoT doesn't need an infinite life cheat and I'd tell mddk that it doesn't take very long to learn the combat system.
but I also see that save states are commonly accepted (many folks were hesitant to play SoH because it does not have working save states) and to me there's little difference between save scumming and emulator cheats/hacks
It has pictures and everything. 😛
https://www.zeldadungeon.net/ocarina-of-time-walkthrough/inside-the-great-deku-tree/
Idk man, if I put the same amount of time for completion that you do, or even more cause I'm clueless, then why does it matter, do I have to have a bad time for it to count, or should I drop work or smth, its virtually the same as using save states
So this is point I was making. Version eligibility is down to an admin decision not a “but I put the same amount of time in” member decision - shouldn’t this be the same
if rapid rules that save states and cheats are not allowed, I'll abide by it. but it did not seem to be the common practice in the community
like people openly talk about using save states and cheats
Guys, so GC version is okay?
not just this game, a bunch of them
there's no chance of a rule like that because how the hell would you enforce it
play how you want
if you find it fun
So i still have the final temple and final castle to do on two broken triggers
Enjoy the games the way you want. I don’t have enough keys to get through these gates.
At least with save states you still have to actually put in effort to defeat the enemies in the game.
For example, there's a Heart Piece in the volcano that you can get as a kid, but you have to be quick enough to get it before you die. Infinite health completely eliminates any danger there, thus making that otherwise memorable moment forgettable.
With infinite health, the game boils down to figuring out puzzles and collecting Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas.
i need a better mapping
Yep
RIP RP4
I think assuming save states and cheats are one and the same is not a good reflection on how this community views save states and cheats
anybody knows how to reset the setting windows positions on SoH Android ?
It's fine, i'm in the shipping window to get a free backplate
just two weeks of untracked shipping to wait
Gamecube version is okay?
100% ok
I have not been here that long so could you explain the difference?
Yes just not the master quest
Thanks guys, I'm outta your hairs
Just play however you want, that's my piece. Freedom is needed for fun to be gained
I've been playing SoH and it's great. Save states have been unnecessary. I feel like the real benefit of save states in emulation is dealing with games that are very punitive and difficulty-padded, like a lot of NES games, or games that experimented with weird shit regarding saves like Way of the Samurai deleting your save upon load but also having nonsense like ||the smith not announcing his price upfront and then attacking you if you can't pay the price he never told you about||
Ocarina of Time is a game that is not difficulty-padded and doesn't do weird shit with its saves like that. I might actually describe it as early modern game design, in that it represented a transition from difficulty padding to... well... its content can be a bit padded at times if you're doing side stuff
I am playing SoH too. I also generally avoid save states and cheats in any game I play. I'm just trying to understand better what is considered acceptable.
in a vacuum, I would say "play however you want. I don't think it's fun to infinite health your way to the end, but that's not for me to decide."
but that's not the message I'm hearing so I'm asking
if you play before the month start an assassination team is dispatched
That's fair. And I understand where you're coming from. But I'm more accepting of save states with difficulty-padded stuff because we're busy adults who aren't in a situation that's like, "you just spent $100 (relative to today dollars) on a game and without difficulty padding it'd be thirty minutes and then you have to bug your parents to spend another $100 on something new"
anything else is ok
Unless you spent $300 buying a copy of some rare game off eBay and want to really play it the way it was meant to be played bullshit difficulty padding and all, in which case, like, yeah I totally understand why you'd want to raw-dog that one
I do make a good-faith effort to engage with a game on its own terms first, though. But once it gets to the point that it's like, this is getting to be a gauntlet of nonsense, I'm more willing to switch to save states
Save states are fine, but infinite health with OoT? I don't really see the point. It's a pretty easy game and it's made even easier with save states and walkthroughs.
(like Batman. I had a week for that and had other stuff to do and couldn't spend all the extra time mastering its patterns to the point that I could execute a gauntlet of difficult patterns with low room for error)
"don't see the point" and "against the spirit of the rules" are different though
That's true and it's why I squint a bit rather than jumping down someone's throat about it
I play on easy mode when possible
I would call it “against the spirit of completing a game” rather than the spirit of the rules- but there’s every chance that’s just semantics
Playing on easy is to me “Completing a game as designed”
Cheats are to me “not completing the game as designed”
Hence the we are not the same meme
Sorry missed the relevance, my bad
But yeah I guess it goes back to the definition of what is a cheat
Because like SoH has a lot of QoL cheats
But something like infinite health would affect HOW you play the game
But what do the QOL improvements “cheat”? Shortened animations, keyboard shortcuts and improved textures and frame rates shouldn’t meet anyone’s definitions of cheats
(Just like save states and fast forward on every other game)
We still having this conversation?
Infinite Heath on the other hand meets the very definition of “an actual cheat”
Good way to rank up
But like said, you have to have an agreed upon definition for “cheat”
Modification of game code would classify SoH QoL as cheats
Here are the rules I follow, #🔮│gotm-discussion message
This post contains no actual rules
SoH has an enhancements menu and a cheats menu. But I'm sure some of the enhancements would be considered cheats by some.
Play the games complete them. Then get a point. Super simple and easy to follow.
In the end, if you have a screenshot of the ending credits with your timestamp, it counts. Well unless you Kevin yourself through discussion
But isn’t allow to cheat on gotm if it’s not like “skipping” levels?
I disagree, I think people are clear what is an enhancement and what is a cheat unless they are trolling tbh
Like, on plataformers I always use infinite lives
Can’t keep using and running out of continues every time lol
Or rpgs I usually do double xp
It’s the same as using save states if you die, just lessens the time
It depends on the platformer for me.
Depending, if it’s an easy one nope. But if it’s ninja gaiden
Eh can’t get behind double xp
Yes
Everyone play the way that is enjoyable. All that matters
We don't need a ton of rules.
there's an enhancement to remove the rng in dampe's graveyard dig. I'm pretty sure someone told me that was cheating earlier.
Like live a live sucks for me but I’ll finish it so I can say how much it sucks
I mean I kinda think that’s cheating
hence my point
What is rng anyway
this too. but this is less than 10% of people playing
dampe has a 10% chance to dig up a piece of heart. it costs rupees to play.
My point is that we know that’s cheating, unless you are saying you look at that and go “nope the menu says enhancements and I have no self determination” (or are trolling)
cost me 700.
I do not think that's cheating
if that's cheating then save stating is also cheating
Cost me nothing because I skipped it
Who needs all the heart pieces
That’s a terrible straw man argument
how is it straw man? you can get the same result from save stating as you can from clicking the checkbox in the menu
it's apples to apples
Have to have an agreed upon definition of cheat. Not a straw man really
You can get the same result from neither
Just everyone is saying one thing
If we go to technicality, even save states are cheating
I have this disease where I like to 100% n64 games. If Donkey Kong 64 wins I am a dead man
Only if defined
Rip
But we aren’t going technically. We are all adults who understand what cheating is, unless people are literally saying they can’t see infinite health as “a cheat”
Well that’s why rpgotq is nice because for the 100% retro achievements points you can’t have this is this cheating discourse
100% agree with this statement
100%
right so
this is a dumb argument that isn't worth anyone's time
you're allowed to have your own opinion on it but I don't see how it's worth arguing about
how is the final boss going
I posted my completion screenshot already
Oh shit. Your final thoughts on the game overall?
Also a note on the final boss if he seems to have absurd health, especially if you're using the Biggoron's Sword: ||I think he might have a mechanic where you can't finish off his final hit point with the Biggoron's Sword or other items, because I wailed and wailed and wailed and then when I thought "maybe I'm supposed to switch to the Master Sword" he went down in just one more hit||
I mean, it's a decent game. I had the controversial opinion that it wasn't The Best Game Ever back when it came out, and I still think that's true.
I don't regret replaying it, though I probably could have done without spending as much time exploring like I'm inclined to do and just, like, finishing the game instead
Ship of Harkinian was an absolutely massive upgrade tho
Kind of makes me want to replay Majora's Mask, which I actually liked better aside from it being shorter, but I might wait for the Ship of Harkinian port
Yeah for the final boss ||last hit had to be master sword|| big horn can’t seal shit in the spirit realm
The fact the port is going to be called 2 ship 2 harkinian makes me ridiculously happy
Like I would not have objected to Majora's Mask having more meat on its bones, but it was in general a better game than Ocarina of Time IMO
I liked that Majora's Mask was in a lot of ways a much more personal and character-driven game than Ocarina of Time was
Also I liked the way it turned Zelda in a horror direction. That was actually pretty great
The real horror in OoT was the controls
I hated the Resident Evil controls much more than the oot controls
But like, Majora's Mask also represented an early break from the Zelda formula. Not mechanically like we saw in A Link Between Worlds or Breath of the Wild, but narratively, being effectively a side story about Link's life and adventures after being the Hero of Time and also about all the people he meets
That was Zelda 2
I feel like its expansion on child Link's mechanics also really expresses how he was forced to grow up too fast and can't actually go back to being a child even if he got all those years back chronologically and biologically
He has adult Link's mechanics because he's been forced to grow up too soon and this is not reversible
I feel like I spend a look of time just looking at the top of screen to see when I can. Get off the horse, Climb a block, push a block, pick something up, attack.
I can spoiler tag some of this shit but I don't think it's really spoilers for MM so much as stuff that naturally follows from it being a direct sequel featuring Child Link + basic game premise stuff
You know, I guess Link's Awakening also had that narrative departure, though I feel like Majora's Mask was a more mature and developed take on it
That was Twilight Princess
I mean both Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess can be that
I might even suggest that Majora's Mask prototyped more character- and narrative-focused Zelda a bit
Though I actually did think the Werewolf Link thing was cool and a more interesting take on the whole "people lose their shape and take on different forms in the dark world-thing" than LttP
I found tears a significant story improvement on breath, so yeah
Sacred stones? Imprisoning War??
I'm starting to notice the sort of progression and descent of various ideas in the Zelda series and how a lot of later things were expansions on earlier ideas that weren't really explored previously or were piloted in side stories (I still think Majora's Mask did very well with the stuff it piloted and was a surprisingly developed take for the first big go-round with more character-/narrative-driven Zelda)
(especially given the ridiculous time crunch to basically make a new game out of OoT's assets)
Weren't they given like nine months to make Majora's Mask?
Honestly it's a shame it was just over the line for the late 90s category because I feel like it fits the theme for the month way better than OoT does. Like it is spot on in executing the theme even before its resort to time travel mechanics
They were released 2 years apart. That doesn’t seem like too short except by Nintendo’s standards.
I think the goal was a 1-year gap between OoT and MM, but they delayed it once they had a decent idea going
I thought Link is dead in MM. I never played just internet theory
Tears only problem besides performance was that botw came out first
originally master quest was going to be a lot bigger and more fleshed out so I think that might have cut into mm dev time too
Master quest was supposed to be an n64dd expansion
But yeah it was supposed to actually have new areas and stuff
Including adding a dungeon for the light medallion iirc
I just had a full-blown Fridge Moment about how completely fucked up Majora's Mask is and how completely fucked up Link's childhood is
Like it's very good, but it is also dealing with some real fucked-up shit
“Fridge moment?”
That moment where you realize something that was implied but not explicit or entirely obvious, like when you go to get something out of the fridge and you're still thinking about a thing and then it hits you
Link is the same from OoT. He’s already pretty messed up
Like Rauru just pierces his ear for no reason when he’s sleeping those 7 years
And he an orphan
Ostracized by the koriki
Yeah no wonder he just kinda fucks off from Hyrule after
Everyone he loves ||gets saged ||
Can’t blame him
Link loves?
Yeah. The game doesn't directly dig into how he's traumatized out of his gourd, but I feel like the much darker tone of Majora's Mask in general might actually be a reflection of how Link feels
He has a choice to accept marriage in game
||it even reflects his loneliness in the loneliness of the Skull Kid||
I think you are trying to hard to link link
But maybe
He does go screw hyrule to find the annoying fairy
Majora's mask is fucked cuz every positive thing u do just gets undone when you loop
I said no. Didn't want to do The Shape of Water story line
I mean he also gets asked to marry Malon
Oh god the movie flashbacks
I feel like if he stayed in Hyrule, going to work at the Lon Lon Ranch and probably marrying Malon when he grows up is, like, legitimately an option here
Especially considering he actually does get Epona before leaving
But he's been turned into someone who would not know how to live a normal life if it bit him in the ass
Nothing a red potion can’t fix
But like, I get it. Even if there are people who still care about him or opportunities he has, he's been completely alienated
Like Saria is still his friend and all, but he can't go back to the way things were for Reasons
That and the whole thing where he has this big transformative experience that if he tries to tell anyone about it they would put him in an asylum
It’s not even really more challenging without it . It just needs you to take the time to go get all your hearts and fill your bottles with fairies every time you die .
At least Epona is still there for him
Nah skull kid takes that too
Less than 5 minutes in
Horse meat is tasty
||I could've sworn you got Epona back in MM but I must be misremembering because this was over 20 years ago||
I don't remember it, so I might not have watched that movie
Or I might not remember it
I have a kind of weirdly shaky memory of a lot of my childhood
Aside from, like, this feeling of malaise. Might be blocking some stuff out
You might be younger than 36 also
I brought him a spirit and he says he’ll just give me 10 rupees for it . I understand I need to find better spirits but I still think this guy is a jerk .
No, I'm 37
You the hero of time?
no just a trauma case
You have to find the bigger ones
It is very annoying
And pointless
Sometimes you'll see really big Poes spawn in Hyrule Field and run away from you. You have to chase after them on your horse and do horseback archery at them
I don’t know in my perspective it’s the opposite . The experience is to explore the dungeon and solve the puzzles, not to grind hearts and fairies .
You need like ten of them to get that thing from the ghost shop merchant that thinks Link is cute
I forgot how Link needs a snowplow to clear bachelorettes out of his driveway in the morning in this game
Fairy boy got game
The whole package is the experience. If you're going to use infinite health then you might as well play a game that you enjoy enough NOT to cheese your way through the whole thing.
I don’t understand why infinite hearts would be a worse cheat than others
Every one has different eyes though. Your squint is not my squint
it's actually a tiny bit fucked up when you factor in the "child in an adult's body" thing
though girls seem to have a thing for him even when he's younger, too. (girls his age, at least, thank goodness)
Who is your ideal match for Link in this game?
Nabooru though
Hmm. Malon, though Ruto could also work if The Shape of Water was your kind of movie
he's already kinda-sorta engaged
Happy Mask Salesman
Yeah The community would just died if there was such a strict rule. Or people would just be lying .
you may not like it but this is what peak male physique looks like
I feel like going back to Lon Lon Ranch might be his best shot at a semi-normal kind of life, but if he can't do that, I feel like Ruto will like, figure something out for him. He might not like it, but she will probably put something in front of him and be like "this is what you're doing"
Ruto is too forceful. I feel like I would be in school for 12 years trying to be a DR.
It depends upon whether this is what he needs at this point yeah
Also whether he's into fish women I guess
Bird people?
It is a so true though.
I am not shipping him with the goddamn owl.
Or if he is into nudist
He’s always been there for him though
Did you want me to repeat that?
Only when he's a kid. We don't want to go down this road
Nah it’s implied the owl is ||Rauru||
Looked out for him for 7 years
Gave him an earring
I got that impression in a really vague kind of way, but how was it implied? Just that?
That’s love
I am going to come to your house and eat all of your fucking pasta
It’s a gossip stone
good I hate that shit
I didn't talk to all the gossip stones so I could absolutely have missed something
Yeah it’s weird that everyone went after mddk because he decided to use a cheat . I think we should encourage everyone to share their experience without being afraid of the reactions .
|| They say that the owl named Kaepora Gaebora is the reincarnation of an ancient Sage."||
Ahh that makes sense
Robbing the cradle though after death in that case
But yeah. I think we've sorted out at this point that Link has, like, opportunities open to him, but it's still very understandable how he is just... completely alienated
he doesn't completely lack outs but it makes perfect sense that he feels pretty fucked
I suppose there's that. He's still Darunia's brother
I don't think he'd take well to a mineral diet tho
And a big ass Goron that works for him for 7 years
I still like to think he ends up with the chicken lady. Helping her becasuse she gets bumps if she touches them.
Also belatedly
Nabooru was incredibly weird but not in a way I found sinister. I didn't detect a wolf-whistle reaction until she saw him all grown up
No she was weird in a ||"she sees this random kid in a temple in the middle of a desert armed to the teeth and her first impulse is to try to play him for the silver gauntlets not realizing he is Serious Business"|| kind of way
Totally true. Like I had a hard time with the slingshot minigame which cost 20 rupees. I knew I’ll have to redo it many times. I could have save states if I was emulating the regular version . But since I am playing soh I just enables infinite rupees. Same result .
you already basically have infinite rupees in this game
though admittedly like, not all at once
but seriously like. wtf did Nabooru think Link was doing there
do you think ||kids just randomly wander into temples in the middle of the desert armed with a sword and shield and heavy explosives and magic spells and shit||
Yes
I suppose rogues can technically make Wisdom their dump stat
Minus the heavy explosives this was something I did from around 8-10. Not Dungeons but mine shafts.
In the middle of a desert ?
you had a sword and shield????? And magic spells????
A knife from the kitchen and a garbage can lid. No magic but a Crystal my aunt me told had “powers”
We also had a big ass dog that looked like a wolf. Named Timber. For protection. The 80s were wild for latchkey kids.
We can't have latchkey kids anymore because the parents all move to suburbia and if your kids leave the house outside of an SUV that is a small battletank they will get run over
sad
Ok the fire temple was nowhere near as annoying as the Forest temple (read “more linear”)
Now at the zora river trying to work out what I need to do (don’t need help, yet)
I have a couple of adult friends now that do similar things. Visiting ghost towns, messing around in old mines and panning for gold on the American River.
My point is that using a guide is the same thing. You could say : why not play a game that you enjoy enough not to use a guide ?
Somehow I'm kinda lost in it lmao I think I just missed a door. I don't have the compass yet and I feel like I should by now
In which one?
Fire
Dm me where you are and I can help
Yeah you basically have unlimited everything . You just have to go back to a spot with pots or grass to refill . That’s why I think putting infinite cheats is basically just a time saver in this game (though I personally don’t use them except for specific cases)
Yeah I might after work lol. Its probably something dumb. Im pretty far in, I did the ||scarecrow song|| bit and freed most of the gorons
But I don't have the ||hammer|| yet
Thanks for the good news ! I am heading to the fire temple right now
You think putting infinite health is just a time saver?
Yes pretty much
Mostly yeah. Game is pretty easy. Maybe if u don't do any heart pieces or get the non-mandatory bottles you might actually die
Which was the last new room that you got into?
Idk I'll DM after work lol
So if there’s no threat of dying, why put on infinate health
I do die a lot !
But that doesn’t mean it’s challenging . I could always just backup and refill my hearts
I think the challenge is mostly to solve puzzles
I haven't died yet but I've been going for 100% and doing things somewhat out of order so I have been OP for a lot of the dungeons. And I have used a couple fairies
You’re very good
I've had ||biggorons sword|| for every adult dungeon lol that helps
Because it still requires effort.
It's not equivalent to basically making yourself invincible and blowing through the game. That makes playing the game utterly pointless except for experiencing the story.
Did you? Play for the|| blue fire?||
yeah lol. I had the money
I didn't even know what it was for.
I think it’s patience more than efforts
And the story is a masterpiece so I think it worths it
(Just to be clear : I don’t use the infinite health cheat personally but I won’t hesitate to use it at some point if backtracking to fill my fairy bottles take too much time )
IIRC I think I completely missed the compass in the fire temple.
I love OoT and even I don't think the story is anywhere close to being a masterpiece, lol. There's some memorable characters and a very basic story.
Yeah I remember missing the compass in at least one previous playthrough too lol but I'm going for 100% so it would be nice to have
What's everyone's favorite part of the game. I really enjoying the side quest and the deep lore you can get .
"there's a bad guy who wants to rule the world and there's a device that will allow him to do that, so you have to stop him! DUN DUN DUUUHH!!"
Hook shot. Favorite Zelda item. Botw should’ve had it.
I hate the hook shot doesn't work on refill hearts
botw should have let u use magnesis like the OoS magnet gloves
the magnet gloves are one of my fav Zelda items they are so fun to use, wish they showed up in another game
If you just want to experience the story you can watch a walkthrough, or probably find a YT video with all of OoT's cutscenes. Save yourself a significant amount of time.
Botw should of had unique dungeons
Bow down to Nintendo they do no wrong. lol
Annnnnd strawmaning again
They do plenty of wrong, but trying something different with BotW wasn't "wrong" so much as "some people didn't like it" (they're allowed to not like it)
Right, water temple,
Water Temple with the OG game requiring you to open the menu to switch your boots absolutely was one of Nintendo's many sins tho
I get that. I am also able to not like the game. Like anyone can cheat in many ways if they want to.
And people are allowed to like it
Never said anyone was wrong for liking it.
But every time you get the slightest pushback on anything you just huff that you can't criticize Nintendo or something
It a fucking joke. Don't take it so serious.
Pretty sure that would destroy a heart
Like high speed stabbing
I just wish it work in the way the boomerang worked for collection of them.
Yeah you’re right not a masterpiece per se . But it’s a masterpiece to experience; with the passage of time and everything .
Doesn’t have a long reach though
I think the vibes are still masterful. The story itself is pretty generic
Watching a game feels so wrong to me lol. If I want just a story I read a book or watch a movie. What I mean by a good video game story is more about the way you live it. I just like being link and exploring hyrule, meeting the characters, etc.
Yeah the vibe is what I am talking about. The story itself is not something I care about in video games .
(So story was not the right word, sorry mayo!)
This might be one of the reasons I liked Majora's Mask a lot more tbh
well the username checks out for this kind of behavior
If the map shows an arrow on kokoriko village it means that I should be doing something there right ?
nope, you don't get objective guidance through the map
Navi is the only direct help you get, sometimes NPCs can share some info that's helpful but most of the time it's flavor text
The red arrow is where you entered the map at
the dots on the world map can give you a general sense of what to do next, but there can be multiple ones pulsing. I think there might also be cases where that is the location of the next big thing, but maybe there is a pre-req that needs to be done first? I'm not 100% sure on that
I forget about the menu map. I should look at that one more.
Yeah I am talking about the menu map .
Unless you are on 3ds then you get a worthless blue dot n he world map
The arrow can’t be where I entered the map since it remains over kokoriko no matter where I am on the world map
That means you can go multiple places
Have something you need to do there
But what about that arrow
That may be the location you are in
It’s not .
What language is that? 😛
french
Thank you so much !! That’s very intriguing .
It’s about that sleeping guy right ?
Best general advice I can give short of giving a guide is to be methodical
-find the three places where you can change the water level
-start on the lowest level, and explore everything you can get to
-then move the water level up and explore everything you can get to again.
If you're still having trouble, here are a couple potential spoilery hints : ||when the water is at the second level, don't be hasty to move the water up to the top level. Explore the middle level, and also re-explore the bottom level||
If that doesn't help, a guide might be the best bet
Pay attention during the water raising cutscene, and also pay attention to things you can't do when the water is high
finished up spirit temple. I think forest and fire remain my top two dungeons.
I might actually like water better than forest. I think a lot of it has to do with the music, but I also felt like I fumbled my way through the forest temple and had to backtrack a bit
Yeah forest and fire are peak. Spirit is worse than I remembered
I think because I was remembering the master quest version which is much more climactic
It feels like they were worried about making spirit too complicated because of the dual child/adult part of it but then just ended up making kind of a boring dungeon.
Best water temple advice I can give is ||work counter clock wires for the rooms.||
I hated that so much.
As someone currently in the water temple, this is not good news for me
Shadow and spirit are more straightforward. They’re not bad. Just less interesting.
shadow is more about atmosphere but idk it's not that exciting gameplay wise. And not different enough from ||bottom of the well||
I think they're supposed to be thematically connected, like one is an extension of the other
To me that's just one big temple.
yeah I wish they just set it up like ||spirit temple||
Thanks for all the tips
This actually helped me getting started 🙂
just posted my completion shot. SoH says total playtime is just over 16 hours. that's with collecting about 70 skulltulas.
What I’m at 18 hours at fire temple and 25 skultullas lol
im 20 hours at fire temple 70 skulltulas
but ive done two of the main dungeons you're "supposed" to do after fire temple too.
I'm around 11 hour in and at the end of the Water Temple
Im at the water temple with 14 skulltullas hahaha
I just got pass 10 to get the extra wallet
And like 8 or 9 hearts haha
10 is what I just go for to make sure I can get supplies when I need em
Where does SoH record your playtime?
Isn't it shown on the file selection screen?
Yea
Still one of the saddest moments in all movies
The horse is intelligent enough to understand despair and not only that, but despair so great that its only option is to give up
AH yes, thanks
Play time is also in Enhancements -> Gameplay Stats. That also has stuff like enemies killed and a timeline of when you obtained key items.
Dampe's Grave Digging mini-game, Heart Piece on the 1st try. c:
(Master Quest Redux)
Same. I actually assumed it happened to everyone until some people complained here
Yep, got it on the first try too. Btw, had found a way to complete a ||race|| without longshot. Extremely easy but very cheat-y thing, ||warp song timer glitch||
So I’m in the water temple at 16 1/2 hours. Checks out
you can also just do it without longshot by being fast lol it wasnt that hard. sidejump the corners and roll whenever you move forward and you'll get it
What’s the difference between play time and total time ?
Maybe the pause menu?
That makes sense. It would explain why my total time is that huge . Sometimes I just leave the game open on pause while I do other things
The nightmare begins again. 😱
I am not heavy enough for this switch . So I figure maybe if I jump from very high into it it will do the trick. Try 20 times and finally nail it with one heart and a half left. And then realize that was not the solution lol.
Feeling so smart and suddenly feeling so stupid
Oh boy, Water Temple is coming. Hopefully I could remember steps from the guide... Or just use the guide, I don't wanna bother with frustration to do it from scratch if messed up
Whoever designed that room at the bottom of the water temple is a total sadist. Whoever brought ||dark link|| into the game with no narrative is foolish
I got here today too. I’m not sure if I want to deal with it today
I should really stop breaking all the wood boxes as soon as I enter an area . It’s the second time that I lose an hour because of that lol
It’s not their fault you decided to keep throwing yourself off a ledge over and over
lol never said it was their fault . But throwing myself off a ledge over and over is just one of the many stupid things I tried .
yeah but what if there's a skulltula in one!
Not the tiny ones
Send help to Mayor Ice. One person can’t handle that much Zelda in such short time period
Do you ever need to use bugs as Adult Link? Assuming you've gotten Gold Skulltulas out of every soft soil location as Child Link (except for in front of the Spirit Temple)?
you can sell them to the dude who wants u to sell him shit
I like that Master Quest has some pretty clever redesigns for the dungeons considering it was just a part of a bonus disc for pre-orders of Wind Waker iirc.
They really didn't have to put in that kind of effort, but they did anyway.
Forest Temple completed in OoT Master Quest Redux. 🙂
The Tunics fit child too? I thought they were just for adult
he's playing a hack
Yep, the Redux hack. 🙂
Oh duh, my bad
it's all good c:
Don't forget about ||outside the Fire Temple||
I've become such a pro at OoT that not even the Master Quest version can stop me! 😜
I think Master Quest began life as Ura Zelda
Neat c:
You know what I've been thinking about it more and I'm gonna be blunt
The best thing about this game is that it led to Majora's Mask
Majora's Mask slaps in all the ways this game doesn't
best way to play MM these days? is there a MM redux?
But it wouldn't have happened without OoT, and OoT still provides really important context for MM (not in the sense that OoT has that much going on storywise so much as that it's the origin of what the fuck is going on in Link's life)
Yeah there's a Redux ROM hack for Majora's Mask, which is what I've been using and I wish I would've played MM on Switch instead so I could use save states (I'm using original hardware).
Doing all of the Goron rolling without save states is such a pain
Got the Fire Temple dungeon item.
Master Quest version of the Fire Temple completed. 🙂
That was significantly tougher than the original, especially if you want to get all of the Gold Skulltulas inside, which I didn't. I already have 50+ Gold Skulltulas and I got the Heart Piece from collecting 50 of them.
I just wanna check, you know the Master Quest isn’t a valid GOTM completion don’t you? 100% my bad if you’re just playing for fun
he already kevined the regular one
Indeed c:
The baby was asleep for a solid 2 hours so I finally got through the fire temple + got the lens of truth dungeon done
Nice 🙂
I'm done. I can finally put down the rp4 with its dead triggers. Feels atrocious in the hands
Water Temple done. Y'know, it isn't that bad. For me, ||Bottom of the Well|| and Shadow Temple feels more tedious
Congrats! 🎉🥳
Water Temple dungeon item. c:
Oh man I was playing SoH on Odin 2 connected with usb c, to an external monitor . And damn battery drain fast
1 hour of Zelda game took like 50%
Not much of a spoiler, but I got the Bottom of the Well mini-dungeon item. c:
Omg finally
I got the long shot of water temple
So rewarding hahahaha
I was this close to open the tutorial lol
Congrats 🙂
Famous froggies. :3
Finally made it to the boss of fire temple . Those temples are pretty challenging, no wonder that it took me weeks to clear them back in the days!
Yeah there's a big leap up after the first 3 dungeons. Mostly in a good way tho
Something I like about oot dungeons is that they are almost all very vertical. Feels like they use 3d space really well even compared to some later games. Like they were saying "this is what we couldn't do before"
Most of them would be hard to translate to 2d
Them trying to do water temple in 3d is what led to OoA Jabu Jabu lol
Shadow Temple dungeon item. 🙂
"sacred feet"
Master Quest version of the Shadow Temple completed. 🙂
You are beating the game twice faster that I will beat it once
😉
Spirit Temple dungeon item #2. 🙂
Shadow Temple done. Hopefully I'll complete the game soon, because it starts feeling like a chore
I got 100% completion in the original version, and now I'm about to beat the Master Quest version (and I've even collected most things in Master Quest, though I'm not going for 100% this time) in the same month.
Feeling like a chore? HAH!
