#Anbernic RG406V

Mmmmmm
hmm interesting, so something like this?
I would buy that immediately...
Looks cramped as hell tbh
I get that some people really need that pocketability, but still
Oh yeah I didn't realized that, but then again the gpd win mini has that in-line layout as well so I guess it could work
Some people really love PSP Go
But I think PSP library is actually not that stick heavy (and it only has one stick)
I mean, technically, the PSP uses sliders, but the PSP from what I remember does use the sliders a lot since this was the time when games for the PS2 were also transitioning to using the sticks for movement
why would I pick slide out controls that leave the screen exposed over a clamshell though?
the overlap when open leaves you less room for controls too
Because it’s cool and the slider is a fidgeted dream
There is someone working on something like a slider for a phone to play games.
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude
not that wide though
I felt like procrastinating in the middle of my freelance and I saw your post, I was just going by your image, I mean I do have the skills to do a proper one in 3D but my photoshop was already open 😅 and it takes less time
But hey, that extra width would be good for DS and PSP
i'm not criticising your work
got good point there
I really wish the kid would stop paywalling updates and news on it behind his Patreon.
I get that he’s gotta get paid but he’s already running a kickstarter for it from what I remember so it’s really confusing.
I am not following it close at all. If he wants to keep stuff behind a paywall it's ok to me. This is something a bigger company could steal.
I mean, if a company wants to steal it a paywall isn’t going to stop them. He already has a public 16 minute video detailing exactly how he made it.
who?!
oh i think i know the thing you're referring to
just not the creator's exact info
Did the leakers get the rg406 mixed up with the rg40xx? Or is a RG406 actually happening?
I mean, Anbernic leaks are usually just screenshots from their QQ channel, it's posts by either Max or their community manager (I think). Sometimes it's them posting on the Baidu equivalent of /r/sbcgaming
So 406 has been mentioned specifically by them for I think a year and half now
It's weird that they're talking about 406 in advance though, they usually don't do that
Like they've been teasing 406 while they were teasing 556 and said it was supposed to come in spring (April IIRC)
Then they decided to launch Cube to undercut ZPG, and people were asking them about 406 and now it's Q4
But I mean this is why their leaks are usually reliable — it's not some rando from customer support saying something, it's their CTO/founder showing an engineering sample 3-4 weeks before launch (but not in the case of 406)
i think they are still trying to source higher res screen for it
cause the original leak alongside back then "506" mentioned that
and its only thing that makese sense why it hasnt appeared yet in sea of XXes
That's our best running theory. It's all about the high res screen
That Zu was bragging about
Now he has to deliver by Christmas
that still means 5 more H700s
well we're getting exactly one release per month
40xx is july
so 5 more releases total and at least one of them will be t820
so
40xx - july
28xxV - august
Arc Pro - September
Cube XX - November
"retroid flip" like device - December ( to rush before Flip 2)
"406" - January (delayed cause of the above)
RG Tate - Feb
Ooooh I like
lets call it educated guess 😄
28xxV sounds cool
Arc Pro - September
dear babby jesus in heaven please let it happen
T820 arc with sticks 🤤
Yeah, Arc Pro would be my end game device. Basically just use a Saturn-capable chip and there's very little Anbernic can do to fuck it up for me
With a stick it's also a perfect N64 device with that button layout
That's getting into "they definitely can fuck it up" territory for me lol
Saturn controller shape is just too perfect to mess with
I mean, someone has made a mockup where sticks are where Arc now has speakers
I'd say that placement would be unusable, but wouldn't ruin the device for me
Can't see an Arc Pro making the schedule, the h700 wouldn't have the power and they wouldn't do two t820's in 3 months like that
Rg556 wa March, cube is June so that's exactly 3 months ... so my guesstimate put Arc Pro to another 3 months
Wasn‘t 405V right after 405M though?
With 40xx finally out of the way we‘ll probably see something new in a week or two
yup
Nope, 405M was released in March and 405V was released i n September.
Oh, I think I remember now there were 353PS and Nano inbetween, completely forgot about those
No worries, time also flies suprisingly fast for me 😉 probably due to my age 😭 :D.
Yeah, I was dead sure 405V was a summer release
yup , you sneeze and its3 months later
So how much pepper do I need to rub into my nostrils to see Arc Pro released?
What would be in an arc pro though, h700 wouldn't be a step up and they wouldn't release one of those as a t820 ahead of a more popular form factor
T820 in my guess
Hopefully the eventual 4:3 t820 does come with an arc dpad though
"Arc Pro" with T820 would solve my prefect DC/Saturn + N64 device needs
"406" with higher res screen would be my "pocketable PS2/GC" need 😄
Well, yeah, T820 should put the device within an inch from very good Saturn
Cube is weird one for me ...for my 1:1 needs , rgb30 is enough , but might pro a ly grab it down the line if price gets low enough
Weirdly enough, seems like RK3588S is really not bad for Beetle (and this is with rewind) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca2tR7IDCmU
Maybe that's because CPU-bound stuff seems to perform better on the Linux side, and Beetle doesn't seem to rely too much on the GPU
Yes please
There was just a libmali gpu driver added to rocknix that gave the ACE a big performance boost yesterday - too bad the device is a hot mess.
yeah, powkiddy and presumably others will make 3588 devices too eventually
what's the power efficiency like with the chipset anyway?
I think it falls into “not great, not terrible” - will probably need a fan to do ps2 and up
And then the fan drains wattage too so it’ll need to be a decent sized handheld
Doubt we’ll see any tiny pocketable 3588 stuff
I wonder how it compares to T820 or the Dimensity stuff
Personally if they did “we have odin 2 mini at home” size/shape for a 3588 I’d be very happy
Something chonky but flat
But of course it's not gonna go into your next small gameboy clone
I’d pick a vita style medium size handheld over a switch lite style one every time
Unless ayaneo get their hands on it
honestly not a clue but i think the demand for it has mostly died away
I mean, yeah, the biggest appeal is Linux support, and most people have simply moved on by now. I'd argue the people that cared were a rather vocal minority to begin with
But if an RK3588S ends up being cheaper than current mainstream Android handhelds without critical deal breakers (see Ace or Max3 Pro), it might become relevant
Will this release this year?
Max said Q4 so probably
So are we expecting the 6 to be the T820?
Yup
I'm hoping the 406 will be my last retro handheld
same 😄
although i will probably still upgrade without thinking if for example Arc pro appears
A powerful 4:3 with a decent res is all I really want now
I dont even mind if it's dpad top or bottom
pretty muuch ... its the only niche i am missing
Managed to secure a 405M for £58 now watch Anbernic announce the 406M next week
thx for your sacrifice
Well with RG Cube still being £150 even if it does release I wouldn't be too bothered as the higher end devices don't seem to drop in price as fast as the XX line
i have been kinda itching for cube too ... outside expenses stopped me 😄
ah, I remember being young
such an innocent time
where? that's one hell of a deal
I remember when I thought my rg351M would be my first, only and last handheld
Ebay buy it now price was 100 I sent out a best offer and surprisingly got accepted
Closer to 1st Oct or 31st Dec?
🤷♂️
Max says lots of things
I wouldn't hold my breath for Q4
treat it as vaporware until we see more tangible leaks
If Retroid releases something soon you can bet they’ll rush the 406 release lol
meanwhile, retroid:
Flip 2 when?
Damn, for a moment there I thought it was another weird teaser image from their social media
I was just going on in another channel about what a handy little device the flip is. If the hinge is fixed I don't see a downside in giving it another go.
An upgraded Retroid Pocket 2S replacement with a 4 inch screen to give RG406 a competitor. 👍
I'd use the Flip more if they gave it in line triggers. The flares just make it not pocket friendly. That's all I want out of the RG406 is the exact same form factor as the 405M or close to and more power!
Yup I would actually like the retroid dpad better
If they're going to hurt pocketability for analogue triggers they could at least give us pressure-sensitive face-buttons too for ps2 games.
i doubt that's easy to implement
Anyone know how the 556 and Cube perform with Dolphin and AetherSX witout the fan turned on. It would give an idea if the chipset is even worth having in a 405M shell
Tbh I doubt 406 will be 1:1 same shell
Same shell meaning pocketable, if it's not picketable there is no appeal to have a 406
might be more like the 40xx which would be cool
case in point .. it needs stacked triggers for PS2/gc ... so needs shell slighly modified just for that
they both hardly get hot
In hardware I’m pretty sure it’s just a force sensing resistor under each button but in software I agree
yeah i meant software wise
A potentially simpler way of doing it would be to have one part of the conductive rubber membrane complete one circuit while pressing lightly, while pressing harder causes another part of the membrane to complete a second circuit, registering it as a harder press.
Yeah I think the ps2 buttons had analogue output not just trinary off/soft/hard though
Barely any games used it, luckily
Love that this is so much of a rumor that there isn't anything pinned for it
it was pinned in other reated threads 😄
That just means no one really care enough about this.
So with the 40xx just released it’s almost certain Anbernic is going to release info on their next handheld. With that in mind.
I am once again asking for a 405 successor
Nah, 32xxVM
I would honestly take a 28xx V if it was in the 280v form factor
What if it was basically an rg nano but 28xx sized
A durable metal h700 miyoo mini
Aka the gkd pixel destroyer
Ooh
Plz daddy anbernic
I bought an R36S a couple months back and it's a great experience for $35, but I've been wanting an upgrade
If my budget is around $100, is the RG406 the ideal handheld to wait for?
Or should I look into a Retroid Pocket 2S/something else?
Doubt a rg406 would be anywhere near 100, especially after shipping.
If it's using a t820 and released this year at least...
Any of the XXs should be a good step forward.
Not much point upgrading to a h700 device from a rk3326 imo, if aiming around 100 USD. rp2s is the best bet for now (if retroid don't surprise us with a rp3s/4s) , unless going for the OGU or rgb10max3 pro (which I personally can't recommend)
I'd say it's the worst time to get a rp2s, it really looks like a refresh or successor is due
The 2S is an awesome device, but yeah we are about six months from the last retroid release, so we should be due for something form them soonish. Im hopoing for either a flip revision or else a 4:3 4in device which can play a larger amount of gamecube and ps2 personally.
Are the Retroids the only best options in the $100-$200 range?
Cube and 556 aren’t bad options depending on your needs
I found a used rp3 for $95, but I wonder if it might be worth the money to spend ~$150 to get better performance
RP3 or 3+?
Just the regular, not the plus
The RP2S is better then the RP3 unless you absolutely hate the form factor or need 16:9
If you can save and get a RP4 or used RP4P you will definitely get your moneys worth. I’ve seen non-pros go for $130 or less here and Pros for $175.
But if $100 is a hard limit I’d get the RP2S
Huh, I would've thought the 3 would be more powerful than the 2S
The 2S got the T610 and the 3+ has the T618, the 3 has the T310
The 2S also has the upgraded thumb sticks that the 4 series got
I went from wanting to upgrade my $35 R36S, so I wanted the rg35xx h for $60, but then I wanted the 4" version since it just released for $75, but then I wanted the Powkiddy X55 since it went on sale for $70, but then I wanted something a bit more powerful like the RP2S for $100, but then I found the RP3 for $95, but apparently it's weaker than the 2S, so now I'm considering an RP4 for $150, but everyone says the RP4P is a better value at $200
Scope creep is so real
I should probably limit my budget to under $150, or else I'll eventually reach the Odin 2 for $300
cube and 556 are prolly better than the rp4 if you care abt ergo and screen
Just buy a SteamDeck
I’d agree except for the sticks on the 556 are a tough sell on a larger device. But yeah.
I almost did last night lol
There was a bidding I found ending in 15 minutes at $200
You wouldn’t regret it tbh. But it’s way out of the budget
Used 64GB launch model though
I would like a Steam Deck in the future, maybe a Steam Deck 2 if Valve releases it with the new AMD APU coming out
I don’t personally think we will see a Deck 2 for a long time
There isn’t anything to upgrade to. But that’s probably a chat for #🚂│valve
Apparently AMD's mobile APU Strix Halo is going to be pretty powerful, I've heard it'll be around the performance of an RTX 4070 mobile
Strix Halo already being tested HP set to launch a laptop powered by AMD’s yet unannounced architecture. The launch of the Strix Point, also known as Ryzen AI 300, is just a day away, but attention is now starting to shift towards the Halo series. Although both processors share names and underlying microarchitectures, they are […]
Just learned what the TDP is, 120W
Steam Deck is 45W, and according to the chart there the 45W version of Strix Halo is closer to an RTX 3050
steam deck is 15 watt tdp
@smoky quartz you may also consider the rg505 or 405. You can get the 405 for around the 90-100 USD range in the marketplace, and 505's sell for 75 or so. Similar performance to the 3+ but by Anbernic.
yeah that's talking about the wattage of the charger it comes with
not the wattage of the device itself
looks like it's not just me, google really is getting more useless lol
Google AI.
Actually, it'd say AI Overview at the top if it used AI, like in your screenshot
That summary was just the regular one they always used before
The X55, Retroid Pocket 2S, and RG556 all look nearly perfect for me
Sadly, the X55 apparently still isn't strong enough to handle the N64 from what I've seen in reviews
yeah the charger is 45 watts so you can charge the battery and play at the same time
but the actual APU in the deck uses 15w max, then the rest of the deck (wifi, screen, ram, storage, etc) usually uses about 5-ish
The Pocket 2S looks great, but I wish it had a bigger screen
The 556 looks like a great combination of the two, but it's twice the price of the 2S and three times the price of the X55
honestly its worth
That was why I wound up selling mine. For the price I would like a bigger screen. Still solid and perfectly playable though and honestly if retroid released an improved version (rp2spro?) it would probably be an instant buy for me.
Any updates? Or will it be dropped in Nov-Dec?
🥺 I hope so
Looks like it's going to be RG40XXV, then RG CUBEXX.
And there might have been another one in the mix, not sure
If we are all good little boys and girls then maybe Santa gives it to us on Christmas.
My theory is Anbernic knows this will sell like wildfire so they are delaying it (not canceled by god I hope) so they can sell a ton of other devices because they assume most people would consider a 406 their one and done and not buy any more devices for awhile.
Could be. But there's always a place for good linux devices.
RG CUBEXX? Will that just be a budget/Linux cube?
Probably. I wonder how more intensive PS1 titles will run at 720p though
cubexx should just be called rgx³
Or maybe... RGXXX
They should just call it the Anbernic Nintendo Gamecube
RG 64XXX ... basically N64 controller , with 4" screen in the middle
I’m listening
The gap between the d-pad and the start button makes me feel all itchy
An RG64XX X would be a 6.4" H700 in any case. 😄
Move Start below analogue stick, widen and move the screen down towards the stick.

NGL that stick looks hella uncomfortable to use lol
I got you
Hear me out...
that's enough of that though, haha
maybe it's just time to admit the n64 controller wasn't that good to begin with
I think the buttons all work, joystick, six face buttons, shoulder and a trigger. But how they were arranged was a bit of a misstep
im pretty sure most think its nintendo's worst/weirdest controller
if i was born around that time, i def would have gotten a ps1 instead
at this point if it has a screen, buttons, you can put two hands on it and it runs on a battery it's a handheld
a Tesla passes as a handheld gaming device at this point
talking abt this. Someone's gonna do something like this at some point. I'm sure
well it did have steam at some point 😄 iirc its removed now
okay you guys got your wish:
https://www.techeasy.org/threads/rg406-周哥年底壓箱4吋旗艦.46/
目前還處於只聞樓梯響階段,有得到任何消息會更新在此貼文
從型號可以知道是4吋的螢幕,據說比例會是4:3,解析度960x720。
預計2024第四季推出
Reddit論壇有圖出現惹,看來是用RG305M造型去修改的,十字鍵移到上面,好評
That‘s a mock up from Reddit
damn
fell for it
basically he says that 406 is not the same screen as 40xx, that its 960x720 (according to google translate)
🙏
What about the 1200x800 picture above, if I may ask
This is something I think is taken out of context:
Unless they are indeed preparing gba handheld?
I am very curious what their next android handheld will be
556 > cube > ??? should be a pretty nice one, track records been good. Hope it's the 406 though lol
Appreciate it
also it seems that the full name is rg406H so I think V is also coming xD
I would not be suprised
Lol jfc another one
I mean Max has been posting single liners about 406 on QQ for over 1.5 years now
Very true
so is it finally happening?
and yeah its been originally teased alongside "506" (which turned into 556)
i guess screen was always the holdup
also GBA hanheld sounds like fun idea too ... i mostly use my OGA for GBA
Yeah I hope anbernic will bring something with a 3:2 screen. The 406 sounds amazing for GB/a, PSP I just hope they don't screw up the shoulder buttons. I hate anbernic's clicky shoulders
Well, IMO T820 is kinda overkill for GBA/PSP
I'd prefer a 3:2 device that is fanless and comparable to an actual PSP in size
Yeah, exactly that, but less QC issues and easy to buy
I know one can post a picture of AN Micro after that, maybe it is the answer
Or
Same 960x640 screen as on the micro but it’s planned for December
Yeah, I'm definitely following that
Just worry the A523 won't be enough for full PSP after all, judging by the videos we have
One or two big CPU cores would've definitely helped there
I dunno, 3.3 inch psp gaming sounds a little too small
aren't these from like a year ago? I don't think we have had any new "leaks" recently
Well they're mentioning 40xx there, so this can't be old
But yeah, 960x720 isn't new info
Knowing when this was posted would be helpful but I’m sure it can’t take that much longer
They also have a handheld with a 4“ 5:3 screen coming
Huh, that's basically a psp go without the 1 to 1 scaling
That screen works best with 3:2 and 4:3
16:9 would benefit a lot from a higher res like on the rg552 screen
tbh this one ould replace my OGA
406 (pokectable 4:3 cabable of GC/PS2) is something niche i am still missing
Still undecided if ishould replace my rgb30 with cube (heard pico8 is messy on adroid)
Only go with an rg cube if you aren't satisfied with preformance of rgb30 imo
xu mini L right? personally I don't think it will be very appealing, even without knowing the design. based on what we know so far it has the same chip as the TSP which means okayish PSP performance but will have a worse screen for PSP than TSP. and the price will be a bit higher. I guess if you want a GBA handheld this is what it'll be good for but I'm more interested in the touch one, gimmicks and all
A 800x480p screen only really has the edge over 640x480p handhelds with gba and wonderswan. Unless you would want to play 3ds games without the botton screen which this device is clearly not even close to emulating anyway.
i am getting more and more annoyed with the batery issues
I wish the rgb30 did not had such bad quality and problems
I fully agree with you on that one
If you're planning on getting a cube be careful of lightbleed
It's a known issue with cubes
Did they not solve that already ?
I haven't heard about it, but you may be correct
yeah its such a great device when it works .... but at times when the problem appears is just obnoxious
Is that like fully confirmed or just a leak?
Oh wait still only 480p, not the most amazing
Confirmed but yes no 720p+ yet
406v in that 40xxV blue colourway would be endgame for me
EW what the fuck is that bro
like what is the 2nd bottom dpad on the right lol i can't with these ideas
is that an Ayaneo?
Yeah its kinda neat, though I feel like it would be weighted top heavy in that configuration
Well not really top heavy but it's so long it might feel that way
Yeah, it's a very cool concept, kinda rooting for it
Basically a device to play the entire library of the 2000s handhelds that should also feel like an actual handheld (not too big, no fan, etc)
Just hope that chip won't let it down
should be also great for gba
Yeah I meant the second dpad is for tate and NDS
The left stick is for psp
Looks like this will cover basically every handheld up to NDS/psp
i am planning it basically specifically for tate, nds and gba and maybe n64 😄 ... (kinda found that i find DS on actual DS annoying 😄)
406 .. will be the 4:3 endgame for me
We need more etsy creators making 3d printed grips to support tate mode.
Touch zero is vertical
Just wait for a fully vertical handheld for that purpose
We gotta stop the trend of putting grips on anything
how about putting grips on grips?
I mean seriously what the grip is this??
Don’t tell me you unironically like that
Like this? ._.
If you need grips for the Odin 2 you should be in the NBA
And buy a custom milded handheld with your million dollar salary
its missing one handke ti be n64 grip
(No actual hate to grippers I’m exaggerating for no reason, if that’s the way you enjoy gaming go for it
)
do we know the dimensions of this device yet?
I have no idea how I found this but here :
seems like a handheld my grandma would have bought me for chrismas
Does your grandma look like this? 🤔
I mean the hair kinda checks out
Speaking of Christmas
Im positive this thing will release before then
No way they have enough H700 handhelds to stall out their next Android release
yeah we still have few months before xmas ... and they seems to do one a month
although i wouldn't mind "Arc Pro" either 😛
Poor execution but I would 100% rather play tate mode with even that than no grip.
I hope we get a 406v
Just a 405v but in the 40xxV blue, better shoulders, and the t820
Don't tease me with my own designs, lol
I just did and there is nothing you can do about it
the shit I see on here
All we need is a beefier 40xxh with the same chip as the 006 series…
This, I needs 🙀
If the Retroid rumor is true it might finally push Anbernic to make the rg406
Retroid rumor?
#1275306435198062633 message
Ooh
Or steal it.
Why is this not closed now that the Retroid rumor is closed
lol, I’m not even sure why the other one is closed. There were three rumors there: 1 a device is coming 2 the SOC 3 it would be revealed this week.
They weren’t really clear on which part was a “fake leak”.
The display resolution is the only info that's completely inplausible
The simple fact that it's coming this week has been pretty much not disputed in the CDM community
Wait it out, see what happens
per aish his retroid connection said that the rumor is all false
Well I guess they didn’t specify which part exactly, but to me it just sounded like there wasn’t a device at all?
I thought this was obvious too and I don’t really know who aish’s connect is but isn’t your SS from the retroid rep lol
Should be
False equivalency
Max leaks his own info, so its legit. "I can't have the toy I want so you cant have yours" is kinda weird.
Maybe we are getting new device from retroid probably later on
Maybe not next week but
if next week comes and its a relaunched Pocket Flip or other form factor, that will explain "the entire leak was wrong".
Retroid doesn’t make handhelds anymore, they are competing with ugreen now and letting anbernic take over the sub $200 handheld space entirely
They’re a usb C hub company
I'm not saying I'm...
Well if the new device does get revealed, will the same Retroid post be re-opened or stay shut for another post?
Depends how close to the leak it is I guess
But it’s probably just gonna be a battery bank so not thread worthy anyway
It’ll only charge 1 of their 3 skus probably too
Honestly given the rp4 base didn’t sell at all and doesn’t work with the dock they should probably just discontinue it as soon as they can afford to cut the price of the pro enough for nobody to complain ($165?)
But that still leaves the 2s in an awkward spot
Especially with how many cheaper devices have better screens now (RGB30, 40xxH, 40xxV, rgb20sx)
There are people around here that still buy the rp4 if they're on a budget
I've seen a few in the what should I buy channel go that route
Its like people who buy the z1 over the z1e ally. "pick the best one or don't get it at all" is a popular mindset.
Unfortunately we only got z1e which its no problem it's win win
Actually you might on with something they did it with rp2s so
there's also a bit of social antithesis too. Funny how companies will launch something nobody asked for just to try something new or avoid the hivemind. People will pick something different out of instinct as well
1:1 handhelds, for instance
#1276131252931526747 Storm's coming
time for Anbernic to rush it before them
There are four posts about the Mini on the handhelds Baidu page right now
Yeah, Max is gonna notice 😄
Imagine it has now moved up the list and will likely be next after 40XXV. They always like to go against other similar products on market
good good
Anbernic kinda blew it. Could have been giving people what they really wanted instead of another large XX variant :/
I want them to rush out an ayaneo pocket rival micro first please
Yeah and now that the Retroid looks to be 3.5” it’s dead to me lolol
Give me a good 4” or 4.5” 4:3 screen and GC/PS2 compatibility for the love of all things retro handhelds.
sir that's the rg556
I think they meant like a much higher end one like with a full fat SnapDragon SoC
I meant their $200 gba
ah missed the "micro" there
they edited that in
I added it for clarity, I forgot ayaneo have an asinine naming scheme

Stick on top too!
Honestly I want bottom stick if it’s 4:3
Just make the 405M with the Cube processor, plastic, and a higher res/slightly larger screen lol
Call it the 456
Well they changed resolution down one level and changed it to OLED probably for pricing but I certainly believe that that was at one time being looked at at least from the leak
!!! What?? Newest Retroid went back to peak?!
Hopefully not two top sticks 😭
I saw the Pocket Mini was nasty with the dual bottom sticks, would be nice to have an Asym offer from then considering their last was the rp2+
Anbernic has to make this now lol
Yee, Ayn and Retroid offices are right across from each other
Or are they?!
Odin is nearly twice the price and twice as thick
Sure.
I mean you get what you pay for with that.
I'm gonna take a guess there's a better chance of Anbernic releasing a 4:3 GC/PS2-capable handheld in response to Retroid's Pocket Mini. I reckon it'll probably be a little while after the RP Mini drops, just as they did when they came out with the RG-556 to go up against the RP4 Pro
its 3.7 inch oled
so its a bit better
should support ps2/gc well given the fact that its got a real fan
at least we can confirm from the image that this device will have an A button
Anbernic really needs to get the screen that Retroid or AYA uses. It's just going to be very hard to justify getting a 480p LCD screen device at this point (in this price and power range)
this is going to be 4inches
If they can get a better ( than what is currently used) 4 inch that will be better imo as a differentiating factor
If same screen as retroid , why get this over a retroid?
Aya uses a 3.9 inch OLED don't they?
On the Pocket DMG?
That's a 1:1 display
I mean if the name suggests anything this is probably 4:3 4inches lol
This will be 4:3
technically 7:8 or something weird
it's 10:9 i think
If it was named Cube then maybe
wait no
The one on ayaneo dmg is about the same size as retroid's 3.7" for 4:3 content
21:20
I get that, but I'm not worrying much about 10:9 when it has such a large resolution and contrast advantage. I'd take that any day of the week over the same 480p LCD that they been used for many many devices now.
we'll get the screen just not from anbernic lol
yeah if that screen was on the rg cube it would've been amazing
or even the rp mini
I guess seeing the Retroid announcement made me see Anbernic as complacent. I don't think it's fair to compare their products to AYANEO but it definitely is fair to compare to Retroid
If there's one thing Anbernic is exceptional at, it's responding to competition
Think they were just holding it back, maybe got caught by surprise by retroid 's reveal.
Won't be surprised if this shipped out first before the pocket mini.
You know, I imagine this is a 406v with how square it looks
And how inset that thumb stick is to the left
If that's a V that would be megatrolling
I mean theoretically it could be a 406 horizontal, but that left stick is so inset, it would be pretty wide
Left stick up what does this mean
Xbox style analog layout I think
Oh
So when they jaave the packaging ready already it should release soon, right? Right?!
All I want is the exact same form factor as a 406M but in plastic
well with GC/PS2 it needs stacked triggers at minimu for changes
Its looking like a 556 mini
And rumours suggest that too
Wonder if they fit front firing speakers for once, seems to have enough room.
ugh
I just want pocketable GC/PS2
how hard can that be
I feel like part of it is at times they know once a super pocket friendly device that can handle everything is released then it's kind of over. Most won't need to buy another device.
Whereas if they inch closer over time they can sell different devices
Imagine the RG405M similar design with the Odin 2 specs. You have the Odin 2 for everyone that wants a bigger screen to put a device in a bag, then the new device for smaller pocket use. That's arguably all people will need outside of various form factors like a clamshell or dual screen or something.
The Odin 2 mini was close but still too big I think to hit that pocket device form use case. It's a weird in between.
Better get the tinfoil hat off now
I wonder how many people actually pocket their devices.
I had this exact argument yesterday on the Retroid mini channel 😄
when I think pocketable I don't necessarily think "I will carry this in my pocket at all times", it's more about the general idea of a device that is super lightweight and slim, enough that you can toss it anywhere easily
You also have to remember they aren't normally if ever custom ordering parts. So whatever exists or they can source is what they can use.
I'm sure aya neo is less like that lol
Most people also seem to want the newest and best even if they don't need it. That seems to go for anything. Look at at least in America all the $100k trucks when they don't even use it as a truck...
With a fan, probably pretty difficult. The Cube might be the smallest in that performance band we will see
Omg i thought this handheld project was dead
Me, but only with stuff that’s relatively flat and cheap.
MM+, rgb10max3pro, RGB30, 35xxSP, 28xx, v90, 353vs have all spent an entire day at least in my pants pocket
I would be interested in a 406 but only if it’s pocketable, if it’s not I doubt it’ll be better than the retroid mini tbh
406h I should say. A 406v sounds very appealing.
Unless they’re dumb enough to do stick top 406v - that would be very silly
Im happy that the top manufacturers are finally able to do good ergonomics
I wonder if Anbernic sits on done devices and just kind of waits until another company releases something similar to ride the wave
Free marketing, maybe thats why their devices become significally cheaper
They dont have to pay Marketing dpt. xD
just kidding of course
unfortunately this means bigger, less pocketable devices which for some (me) it's a deal breaker
they noticed probably they have much bigger profit with cheaper devices because more people are buying those
I can understand and to be honest when it comes to the form factor - RG405M was super comfy even though it was super pocketable
same with rg40xxh but this one is a little bit less pocketable because of the shoulder buttons
Well that's not wrong
If 406 comes out before RPM, you won't be able to make an RPM review without mentioning 406
Even if it comes later, aside of reviews it will have a lot comparison video on YT
Anbernic is very smart this year, they release usually cheaper devices than the competition
and often with the better build quality
(I would say Retroid is better though, but is much more expensive)
especially in EU
Like come on I can but right now RG Cube on Aliexpress for 130 bucks including european taxes and shipping
its better than 3gb version of RP2s
I've pocketed my RG35XXH, DSi a lot
got a link for that one?
tbh I pocketed even RG40XXH this week 😄
its basically same size as modern phone in a case
Not sure if I can post it here I will pm you
i bag my steamdeck , with the help of killswitch case
its good to be a fan of rap music I guess
More of a 90s thing than a rap music thing
Who remembers this dumb commercial?
It always comes to my mind when debating if something is pocketable
good for us boomers
yeah, I remember it, but I have to say that Vaio P design was awesome, it a shame that its so underpowered (and it was even back in the day)
I wouldnt mind a new version with ARM proc.
Sony had a lot of great ideas back in the day, with Xperia Play, PSP GO and VAIO P, unfortunately the hardware wasn't there yet
Yes ,
Have zero interest in this personally. Looks great and all but makes no sense having this much power and only one stick + touchpad .
Supposedly the screen is custom made
These are cool again!!
Big doubt for custom made, it's the lg wing screen that cost around 200-250 rmb.
Maybe they ask to tweak to some predefined settings...
rip top stick
||RG406XX||
The internet was so innocent that just seeing a woman’s ass would make you forget the netbook is actually falling out of that pocket
Yeah, I really want Anbernic to offer something major Retroid won’t, but I think it will just come down to price
And, well, I don’t buy a lot handhelds, so not that sensitive to the price difference
Top stick, hell yeah. All people with baby-hands can seethe.
Burn the witch!
That’s what the CEO Arthur stated , wether that’s true or not is a entirely different story
Plus isn’t the secondary screen smaller on the Wing
Doesn’t matter anyway, not buying the DMG

the thing is the Cube, rg556, and 406 are all stick-priority devices. if you want dpad priority, go get an rp4 or rp-mini.
I just want to see what Retroid has planned for future the RP5 first before committing and final RG 406 specs
Mini does a lot right
it's going to be the same performance plateau with slightly different ergo.
Sure but we haven’t seen the final product yet to be 100% sure
persomally dont care either way
my descition between 406 and RPMini will be mostly about other details
and based on first batch reports 😄
Someone shared this in the morning
Oh sick
There’s an 800p 4:3 screen?
800*600?
Get it, Get it. Or don't. Back to breaking hearts
Dang that was fast
At this point I’m tempted to get some other discord peeps together and make a show of making a flip successor just to get Anbernic to release one
If it takes a major gaslighting campaign to get what I want then I guess ya gotta do what ya gotta do
Just make a fake website with very good photo shop
If you need me I’ll be combing through YouTube videos with a squarespace sponsorship to get a deal on a website…
If the 406, isn’t high-res or OLED, it has already “lost” in my books.
Cool story bro
Tis an opinion, not a story?
anyway was hopeful for this. Now swaying away. But we’ll just wait and see.
Nice
The last leaked msg from whoever works for them said the display was hi res, bit vague but yea
yeah NGL, dropping the 406 in response to the RP mini is just plain petty. no way this thing will top the RP mini
This pettiness is good for us consumers
Competition for our dollarydoos
tiny screen in big shell. trumiUI smart is that you
Haven’t been this keen for new devices in a while
I mean yeah competition is good, but what happens when the "competition" is just a kneejerk reaction thrown together for the sake of competition
like the cube
I don't think that is what is happing at all. These are that easy to just pump out.
Aren’t *
Safe to assume that these take at least months to be supplied/produced/distributed
I mean it’s down to the company if they wanna rush or take their time TBH. Ultimately we as consumers decide if it’s a product that’s good enough for us, regardless.
It is pretty free marketing for anbernic tbh lol. Not really negative press for them cus people will still buy
Yeah they've def been processing this 406 for a while this isn't a reactionary thing
It just seems like it on the surface lol
But I'm hyped for both
More competition in this space is appreciated
Daddy Anby happens to be the company with the highest income of any of these companies so they likely have the facilities and staff to work on many devices simultaneously
I think Anbernic are just pushing the 406 up their release timeline, rather than still R&D-ing at this point.
They can’t do their monthly release the way they want since a direct competitor to their product is incoming.
All about timing these days with these product launches. That’s why Samsung and Google do their new phone announcements before iPhones nowadays.
i feel like the 406 was a dead project till the RPM announcement which they decided to grab an old box off the shelf to a "leak"
This ain't Miyoo tho
I dunno, this is nothing new. And we can just let the product and our monies speak for itself
I think it was still happening but they had a release timeline for it after all these H700 devices.. But now they gotta change it all up
I like that people are like. The 40xxV is because of the AYAneo DMG. I am like anbernic already made the 351v
There are only so many form factors you can make a handheld in and most look the same.
I think at this point it's more or less a given that the screen will be better than the 405m but worse than the RP mini
Maybe. If the 406 isn’t OLED I personally have lost interest in it.
very unlikely to be
Anyone else hope there is a 406V that is like a 40XXV but more powerful?
I'm hoping (coping) that it's not a V at all
I hope that every handheld gets a V
Agreed. In a world with the Mini and the DMG if they can't match that it's dead to me.
Then why are you here?
Because we're all still waiting for what the 406 will have to offer, obviously
We don’t even know what the Retroid mini has to offer besides the screen and a render. But it’s the best correct?
Best what ?
Unsure who said the Mini is the best. But I'm pretty sure people like myself and Silvard are just expressing that if the 406 isn't OLED, it'll lose our interest.
Does not mean other people will find the 406 more suited for them. This is about preference.
RG556 Is great if it didn't have crappy sticks
Ye
New sticks and gamma fix and the 556 made me forget about the rp4p
Would be interesting to see a vertical of a 556
A vertical Oled would be interesting
What you swap out tor ?
Retroid rp3+ hall sticks. Not the ones on the 4/2s
Pretty straightforward to install? Might look into it
I think there are a couple videos out for it. I take all my handhelds apart. So it was easy for me. If you never take one apart. Might want to take your time. Ice cube tray is great for keeping track of what screws go where.
Most people who were in the console market at the time did exactly that.
rg406 does 6th gen. rp mini also does 6th gen. they both have different QoL and layout features, but both are stuck in the android plateau/trench, so there's not much to fight about
Whoops I meant 960x720
Tbh I need way more info than just render and screen details to decide between the two
Indeed. For me the screen is one of my top deciding factor since I already have enough devices with IPS screens that I’ve lost interest of my device that uses them.
yepfor me oled ... is like nice to have but not requirement (i have bit of a PTSD from cheap oleds)
You experienced a threatening life-or-death situation due to a cheap OLED screen?
just trypophobia vs black sports
Rg556 cube looking ahh console 💀
What the fuck is this
ikrr xDD
wait wait wait, this gets a 960x720 screen? The perfect resolution? damn!
if this is also oled I would be really torn between this (likely smaller bezels, great psp scaling) and the retroid mini (superior dpad up configuration, concave thumbsticks, slightly better dc/ps2/gc scaling)
but if its cheap enough (i.e. cpu not targeting ps2/gc) i'll add it to my collection regardless
im only interested if it's stick on top xD
Honestly a theoretical 406 with a t870 and same form factor as the 405 probably gets my purchase over the rp mini regardless of stick placement just because of a more compact form factor. The main deal breaker between the two is probably going to be screen resolution though.
If they do a 406v that hybridizes the old 405v design with the gorgeous 40xxV design I’ll probably bite
Meaning an extra stick and the butt?
Basically yeah - the DualShock layout, grips, and big battery from the 405v, mixed with the gorgeous colours, better controls, and somewhat sleeker shapes of the 40xxV
Do the grips somewhat sharp edges feel as uncomfortable as they look?
I hope 406 is a vertical
Is there any like T720 chip or anything that's a cheaper step down from the T820 that they could use for a GC/PS2 affordable handheld?
Cheapest chip I can think of them using that fulfills that just about is the G99 atm
What about the T760/770
on the 40xxV or 405v? I have only used a 405v and it's incredibly comfortable
405v.
This goes hard
Just bad photoshop
Btw check this news: Customs cracked down on the online sale of infringing games and seized 8 sets of game console circumvention devices, 640 sets of infringing game console sets, 214 memory cards containing infringing game files and a batch of computer equipment from the 14th to the 22nd of this month, with a total value of 1.02 million yuan. Cai Junwei, senior investigation officer of the Copyright and Trademark Investigation Division of Customs, said that officers conducted online inspections and analysis earlier and found that sellers were selling suspected infringing game console sets and circumvention devices on online social platforms and online marketplaces. With the assistance of the copyright holders, Customs officers disguised themselves as customers to conduct online trial purchases and searched a commercial unit in Kwun Tong and a residential unit in Tsuen Wan to seize the batch of evidence.
Customs arranged for computer forensic personnel to arrive at the scene. Through on-site computer evidence search, they seized more than 1,000 suspected infringing game files from two computers and external storage media used to process suspected infringing game files. Two men (aged 28 and 41) were arrested during the operation. One of the men has been charged for "violating the conditions of stay" while the other man was released on bail pending investigation. The case is still under investigation and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
The real dude 😉
I like to think they opened the RGB20SXs and applied the stickers just for these photos.
man this is why companies need to stop putting pirated sd cards
pretty much asking to get arrested for putting stolen games
Here's the OG article: https://www.hk01.com/突發/1050619/海關放蛇買千元燒錄卡載30隻遊戲-拘2男賣遊戲規避器及侵權套裝
Interesting after all these years 😛
Some spiteful sticker placement on those.
So someone did seize a bunch of emulators for having pirated games?
Honestly about time something like this happened, though my money was on American or European authorities being the ones to do it with a shipment coming into their country.
Seeing GKD mini makes me depressed
it's such a beautiful looking console held back by crappy it's Firmware, if only it was android
if my 556 got seized by customs i would be so depressed 😭
Could be worse. Could be Android and still be terrible, like my X28.
lol
I hope this makes Anbernic, Powkiddy, GKD, MagixX and anyone else you could think of to reexamine their policy of shipping devices with roms.
Unfortunately I think this market would contract pretty heavily overnight if they didn’t ship with roms
Nobody on this discord would care really but the tiktok normies want something that works out of the box
I wonder about that, the one time I kept one of those generic SD cards around it started to fail within a month.
agreed, seems like retroid would be fine since they don't sell roms
these days anerbnic seems to put good SD cards atleast with the blue looking ones
Ayn as well
Tbh as much as I like retro handhelds with the advent of x86 handhelds it isn’t like we would be left with nothing if the emulator handheld industry collapsed
I'd be sad since x86 are awful in terms of battery life
Not to mention, most of us will already have plenty of options for lower end console systems already.
Not anymore tbh. Ally X and STOLED will both get you about the same battery life as an android handheld for fifth/sixth gen
Honestly same here. I’ve got a steamdeck and onexplayer for pc games and higher end emulation, and while I do want a smaller handheld for on the go that niche is already filled by a bunch of older handhelds.
Ohhh that's great
though to be honest being able to play yoshis island for 25 hours sounds appealing on android
Yeah, power saver + gammaOS + 405v = absurd battery life
wait really? dang need to check it out since gammaOS is also available on the rg505
Yeah the 405v is just the biggest battery of the t618 devices
I’ve got a miyoo mini plus, rg280m, and v90 so not even the newer stuff and they play anything I would want. With the exception of poor n64, Dreamcast and psp performance it’s not like these new Linux consoles are really offering all that much new.
You’ll get over 24 hours playing gameboy colour anyway, not sure for yoshi’s island
RG405V
battery 5500 mAh
RG405M
4500 mAH
Dang that's a big upgrade
Tbf I expect china to just not give a fuck at the end of the day lmao
I wouldn't doubt theres another reason for this or just fluff
The majority of the products are Anbernic. Did they hit Anbernic's main warehouse?
Oh I see.. This was HK with different rules, not actual China where they don't care. So it was a HK reseller.
Ohhh
So yeah nothing will change lol. Maybe just hk resellers taking out the cards
Might be a case of them pushing anbernic to ship without roms on sd1 in the future, they could still sell rom sd2's on their own site then.
Don't worry about that 😉 You've haven't bought like 100 of them 🙂
nope, because these devices are already made
Works just fine
welp. looks like nintendo, sony, and sega finally paid off the locals. end of emulation handhelds happening /s
"Some of the game sets were connected to default websites to facilitate users to download more infringing game files. Some of the seized infringing game console sets were modified old portable game consoles, with criminals installing third-party operating systems on them, said Tsai Jun-wei and preloaded a large number of infringing games, remodeled and then released for profiit"
So they're going after psp, vita, and 3ds modders too.
Okay, so first of all what it is “circumvention device”
Circumvent means to go around something.
What does an emulation handheld go around to get it into legal trouble? Answer that and you get a pat on the back.
they put roms on it
The definition is different now. Like, if there is even an instruction on where to get roms, they will confiscate the device
Ohh
those illegal PS Vitas
Anyone worried about this should just order from mainline China so that it doesn't have to go through HK.
Those are PSPs
There's also Vitas
Too bad I order handhelds from the mainland rahhh
Sorry, but I'm too lazy to read hundreds of messages. Are there quite reliable rumors about a RG406 ? In that case, what to expect about the screen ?
there is zero info on the 406
other than that it exists lol
And Max has been throwing around like 5 resolutio s over the months so who knows
not suprising those are illegal since people often sell them with roms
quality troll.
?
it was an exquisite jest
repeating the same thing in a different way
the 406 exists, you don't think? not trolling
it's just a funny response to someone saying they're too lazy to read hundreds of messages is all.
well yeah I wouldn't either lmao
don't have all day to scroll through discord messages
we know its 4 inch and T820 and most likely it uses 720p 4:3 screen (according to Max Zhou) and most likely horizontal comes first (unless they changed something with their plans)
It could happen as its anbernic and the horizontal part is 2 week old now xD
we know it already has a box and is ready to ship
And actually Max said 720p 4:3 for at least a few months now, but you never know.
Stick on top too. Doubt it's ready to ship.
so they've been teasing it including the resolution - 960x720p since (at least) April, maybe its indeed ready to ship, actually Im really suprised that it took them so long
Thanks for the info. Regarding screen size and resolution, it is tempting to compare with the upcoming Retroid Pocket Mini (1280x960, 3.7"). I've made simulations with https://shauninman.com/utils/screens and it appears that both screens permit to cover almost all the screen for major systems with integer scaling. I focus on integer scaling while 720p means 3x for most retro systems even is 3x is probably much worse for CRT shaders than Retroid's 4x.
So for "classic" CRT systems, there is a strong advantage in size in favor to Anbernic, while 4x is better for shaders that will respect pixel art much more than sharp squares that were never intended by pixel artists.
Same with classic handhelds even if in that case, resolution doesn't matter as much as in the CRT case (shaders are often much simpler grids).
When it comes to more recent consoles such as GC, DC or PS2, you top at a 1.5x on the Anbernic, which is a no-go for those who want CRT shaders and even simple scanlines. Hence, the Retroid is way better for those who prefer 1x with postprocessing rather than clinical 1.5x upscaled 3D. There is a strong choice here, no tradeoffs.
PSP scaling is also a major difference between the screens.
Also retroid will most likely have a better performance
For NDS, you probably won't like huge crops, so the size advantage is massive in favor to Retroid.
Yeah. Gc and PS2 likely out of the question for this. DC is a "cool I'll take it" deal
3.7 4:3 might be too small for psp though
4 inch is the bare minimum for me
as its almost the smae size as psp go
now I think you can always run 2x and downsample from it
I'm only looking at devices not that far from 4:3. If I'd like PSP, I'd chose a 16:9 emulation console in a first place. But here you are. Way better for Anbernic's.
not sure if t820 is strong enough though
its enough for gc but not ps2
That was bot my point. What I'm thinking about is source-device 1:1 emulation, and then post processing taking advantage of the extra resolution. For PSP I agree, grid shaders or such don't make much sense. But I used to play GC, PS2 and DC on CRT and to me, that's the way these consoles should be rendered. And with that in mind, 1.5x isn't good at all. But I get that many like the clinical resolution enhancements better than dirty CRT renderings.
Everybody has his own preferences and target different consoles. I typically don't care even the least about PSP or any home 16:9 console but I want 8-32 bits beeing properly emulated.
At a first glance, my conclusion would be (regardless of the SoC) : if you want CRT/grid shaders to get the proper beauty of pixel artists' work, then the Retroid is the way to go. But if you don't care about CRT/grids and know how modern interpolation shaders (bandlimit and such) are so good that integer scaling is unimportant in that case, then the Anbernic will probably be much better (as far as the screen size and resolution is concerned).
I'm surprised you guys haven't completely dissected that box picture over the weekend
Kinda already did
Oh, so what's the running theory, a vertical?
It was talked about like 10 min that pic surfaced haha
Think it’s gonna be a horizontal unless there’s only two colors
Which is possible
Well, I mean, the A button is visible, suggesting orientation, and there's a large chin under it (scribbled part)
So my money is on a vertical
Good eye
horizontal with ergo grips
If that’s what we get I’m convinced max zhou has no idea why anyone wanted the 406
Anyone who didn’t care about pocket-ability already bought a 556
If 406 is not pocketable it's a pointless device
All we need is a more powerful plastic 405M nothing more, nothing less, it can even be the same 480p screen for all I care
For me I want a 406v but yeah for the 406h you’re right
Honestly the 40XXh is the perfect form-factor for me. Stick a better screen and more powerful chip in that (with better cooling) and I'm down.
The 480 resolution is the only thing holding it back for me.
Its this. Rumor was its basically 556 but mini
I think its closer to Cube but 4:3 and with regular dpad, but lets see. 556 grips on it would be terrible for portability
Guess we will find out soon 😅
Isn't this a stick ? With the A button relative placement, it suggests a V to me.
indeed, you are right, looks like its V or maybe they will suprise all of us and it will be rg406sp
now when I think about it on the box we do have a circle around the action buttons like on xxSP
bvut its also on 40xxV box
so yeah, no horizonta device for now it seems 😦
Tbf, the sticks were inline with the face buttons on 406, but not 556, so it could be very wide
But the size of the chin, and the space under the stick also suggests a vertical IMO
It was confirmed by Maxzhou himself that the box was actually 406V and is set to be released in September.
But what about the horizontal device
Nooooo
But we'll I won't be buying engame 4:3 before winter anyway
At least we know now that RG406V will have sticks, I hope it wont be as ugly as RG405V 😛
surprised they would do 406v right after 40xxV
i guess thy are waiting for RPM to have more info with the H
Likely it's going to be aimed at a way different price point.
yup
so my guess right now is
August - 40xxV
September - 406V
October - CubeXX
November - 406H
maybe with someweirdness inbetween and 406H by december (Arc Pro pls)
Doa, why would they change it up from the layout of the 405 rip
what do you mean? 405m also had stick on top
Ah yeah, that would be really bad 🙂
So this is stick on top but vertical? 🤨
That's the weirdest part about this, a 406H would make far more sense as their next device and then slot in the V for xmas
different pricepoint, but probably very similar audience, if I get a V this month then I'm waiting on sales for a 406V
Have you seen the fan mockups for an arc update, it just doesn't look quite right with sticks and a higher spec arc would have to include them to widen the audience since the niche that wanted higher specs and still no sticks wouldn't be big enough to make it worthwhile
isnt 1 stick enough though for DC and N64?
but sticks make a lot of sense (at least one) because of Dreamcast
and not havent seen mockups
A higher end device than 3566 would be expected to also do ps2/gc to ensure a wide enough audience, you are not selling enough of the device just for those wanting better n64/dc/saturn as that'd be a subset of arc buyers
RG Arc imho didnt make any sense with its design, sure its cool just for Mega Drive and some Arcade fighters, but maybe it would be better with stronger cpu for Saturn and stick for Dreamcast/other arcade games ?
But do you really want to have separate handheld for each system to emulate?
IMHO Arc the biggest wasted opportunity so far from Anbernic
it was a comfortable device mostly using components they were phasing out like the 405's display and the 3566, so probably made sense in that respect, while letting them try out ideas like sega dpad and 6 buttons that could be applied to subsequent devices
fitting that stuff into a md pad simply added extra nostalgia factor to try and boost sales further
but imagine with sicks it would definetly be a ultimate RK3566 device, RG353P but better
...or they know that they sell less V than H and prefer to launch the H for Xmas. I the meantime, enthousisat will buy the V anyway and others, knowning that an H is coming, would wait over an eventual Retroid or even the Ayaneo. That would have make sense. The issue is the Retroid looks damn good, so far, and it will be difficult to compete.
If that was their plan then they should have reordered the XX releases so they didn't do two of same form factor in a row
and the sad thing is - there's plenty of space for sticks on it
i kindaalready do 😛
but yeah i definitely want 6 button device capable of full sega+N64+arcade .... and Arc is almost there, but still far away ... so i will probably grab anything that gives it to me in the future
the XX releases exist to fill the gaps between the higher end ones, delivering volume and avoiding the need to spend on advertising
They could have probably pushed the buttons and dpad higher to make room for sticks on either side of the display at the bottom, but you'd probably need to drop some of the md design touches and if the sticks didn't add more overall sales to offset the loss of any due to less nostalgia factor plus the extra cost of the sticks then it wouldn't make particular sense, especially when they already had 353 devices with sticks too.
Probably not, guy was likely to be theorizing.

man if this thing turns out to be practically identical to a 405V but with a T820 instead then I might feel some remorse
Felt that was a given, just thought it'd be months away rather than the very next on the line.
I'm more curious if they're going to reuse the existing shell or come up with a new one, because I'm one of the weirdos that likes how swole the 405V is and I'm curious if they're going to slim it down, especially in light of how the 40XX V turned out
though in that case they were almost deliberately copying Ayaneo's homework with the design, and I'm not sure who they'd pull from this time
I'm probably the only person in the world who'd be swayed by a bigger 353V.
According to the old leak it's going to look like the 405V 1:1, but just with the T820. Just wait and see 🙈
40XX V with a second stick and downfiring speakers seems more likely than reusing the 405V tbh
if they reuse the 405v shell, would that be so bad?
from what I hear it's about as comfortable as a vertical handheld could possibly be
If they do a black 405v shell I’m down
yes, because I just got a 405V and anbernic isn't considering my feelings
if there's any consolation, at least you wont be alone 😆 I know someone else who just picked up a 405v a few weeks ago
While it was fine, it got some criticisms for being such a chonker
If they did reuse it, I'd hope they used bigger face buttons too, those looked too small on that big control area
if a handheld was gonna be big anyway, might as well make it chonky and comfy
they were fine in size, but they just looked too small, it was mostly just a perception thing
but I'm a steam deck owner so that's where my opinion comes from lol
I have a 405v they are fine lol
Embrace the woood
This would be my dream. I was about to order the 40XXV until I thought of this possibility.
I hope they don’t make too many major design changes from the 40XXV. I’d rather have it run warm then have it look/feel like the 405V
Damn no one liked the wood dark dark times
(unless they put stick top on a vertical, which would be the darkest timeline)
Yea we can close the thread in that case
New colours might be fun, but can they cram a WiFi chip in there? Then it would be perfect
even more perfect would be rg28xxV with wifi chip:)
wtf
sooo, we doing rg406 now to fuck over the Retroid Mini or nah?
Anbernic was afraid someone might be releasing another console. Doesn't even matter who it is ... No console can be released by anyone without Anbernic teasing or announcing a release of their own.
I mean I'm glad Anbernic is finally doing something on the high end line but
a vertical
all we wanted was a more powerful rg405m man
perhaps they figured there's no way they can't compete with the Retroid mini so may as well try to own the powerful vertical niche instead
but if so it's a bit of a loss
No fucking way
Do I get this for RP Mini
And September?
Like next month September?
Huge news if true
We’ll get a 406h eventually
Probably before the end of the year
The V was probably just ready sooner
I’d be down with the same body as the 405V
I’d actually prefer that
Only downside is that would be the screen would (most likely) be the same
Which I would not like
oh you sweet soul
Nothing sweet about it honey
Rad
Wood grain
Wood grain or a nice solid colour like the 40xxV indigo blue
Same body as the 405v but with the 40xxV dpad/face buttons/shoulders would be peak
GammaOS, vertical, and big battery 406v vs OLED and retroid controls on the RPMini 🤔
Will be interesting to see how they differentiate it from the 40xxV, while screen and cpu are obvious areas, the 405v's battery was a big selling point for you wasn't it?
they could do Green one now (Green DMG was a beauty and it was my first Game Boy, actually it belonged to my older brother as I was really small kiddo ;D)
but this with green buttons would be even better
Soooo... since the AliExpress seller send me the wrong colored rg405v, they better release the rg406v now in the exact same shell, because that damn thing was comfy as fuck
yup my chonky wood is super comfy
kinda sad, because the rg406v is pretty certain to release in a way sleeker color and this chonky boy was just perfect for the DMG one
yeah, a comfy vertical with absurdly long battery life made the 405v the perfect airplane trip handheld
I fly across canada and back about once a year since my family is all in NS and I live in BC
and I usually use budget carriers that often don't even give you a plug at your seat, let alone enough room to use a steam deck or ally X
so it's often 8-10 hours of travel between airplanes and an airport stop en route
Anything a step up from the 405v will be a major win
Maybe 40xx v dpad, a lil bit more modernized color options, a better screen and chip
yeah, the 405v is already good, we know we're getting a t820 and supposedly 960x720 screen res, just hopefully it gets some design refinements and improved controls as well
Hope they stick true to what makes the 405 good
the only way they could really mess it up for me is if they go stick top on a vertical
which would be a sin most unholy
at any rate I'll be shopping the 406v against the RP mini
so I know one of them is dpad top lol
honestly a glow in the dark fat gameboy would be funny enough that I would actually require it more than anything in my life
Well it’s vertical so
we'll get a 406h too
That makes no sense.
It makes a little sense
We’ll know once they release the 406, if it says v or just 406 lol
existence of v in the name
implies the existense of one with different letter in the name down the line
Didnt he also say stick on top
that would be so cursed on a vertical
I'm not really into the retroid, the screen size is practically the same as the useable on my cube. A 4inch 4:3 is enticing though
to be fair it's about halfway between a 4" 4:3 and the usable 4:3 area on your cube
since the cube's 4:3 area is approximately 3.5"
Eh I run 8:7 on a lot of stuff on the cube
And widescreen + stretched in dolphin utilizes the whole screen
GBA is the only thing that kind of sucks on it. And I don't even try psp
4 in 720p is a dream
I wonder if they'll surprise us with it being oled
That would be insane but I am okay with either or
I hadn't touched mine for long, because the ugly purple got taken in for return ASAP, but the ergo was great... pretty big bummer how much they fuck it up with other handhelds all the time, like just give me a flat slap with a little meat where I'm supposed to hold it instead of ergo bullshit that forces my hands into place
kinda hope they will re-use the shell pretty much 1:1 tbh, would be nice if we soon got a few snaps of more than the box so I can decide if I gotta have to look for another 405v or not
I am going to disown max zhou if they make a stick top vertical
yeah stick top 406v would be a no buy from me
kinda already my biggest gripe about the 405m
Just like I am going to disown retroid if the rp mini has a baby sized battery
which was the reason I even considered the 405v when it was cheap, but oh well... there goes my shiny new DMG colored fat gameboy
fucking purple
With active cooling deffo not baby sized battery
I might rebuy the 405v if I find a dmg or wood grain cheap and both the rp mini and 406v suck
It only weighs 215g despite the cooling so I fear the worst
