I still feel like the conversations do play out mostly naturally, but there is a lot of exposition dump all at once. He’s a master of telling instead of showing, which kind of sucks. I do notice the repeating the end of things, but I think a large part of that is actually translation. It’s a pretty common thing in Japanese to kind of repeat someone and then change the ending sound to make it like you agree with them or disagree with them or question it.

It’s not uncommon for something like this in Japanese “do you like soccer?”
“Yes, I do like soccer.”
“Oh, so you do like soccer… do you play often?”
I finished the game. So far I've only shared negative observations, so I just wanted to say that I overall enjoyed the game as a complete package and become the fan of the series, even if you guys say that the next ones aren't as good. I like a lot of narrative elements, so I don't mind that there's focus on talking and cutscenes. I want to play next ones to see how crazy the story gets.
The spoiler didn't work, deleted and hope noone was affected.
|| The post credit reveal that there's another's snake brother is something I saw coming, but the fact that it is, or it is suggested that it is the president is proper anime-style crazy and I want a piece of that cake ||
There's this scene when things start going, that felt very meta to me, cause the game starts somewhat serious, and in that cutscene I was thinking like, it's getting too much like anime to my liking, and this happenes. I liked Kojima's writing in Snatcher better, but still interested to see where it is going and how crazy it will get later on.
i have a lot of nostalgia for this game so obviously my opinions are colored by that but one thing I kept coming back to as I played this was this game is definitely one that benefits from repeated playthroughs. finding secrets, new paths, doing things a little different. i devoured games like this when i was younger but I have a weird relationship with them now because repeated playthroughs just aren't something i can get to 99% of the time
genuinely loved getting back to this game though. probably haven't played it since release
I dislike the camera angle, the combat, and some of the cheap deaths. Some of the dialogue is cringe by 2023 standards. I do like how it sort of established the formula for how stealth can/should work in a video game. And the fact that you can get info from the codec however you like is a cool bit of freedom.
I don't have any nostalgia for it. I remember renting the game, finding it too difficult, and returning it. But I think I will eventually play through the main series if only to fill in a gap in my video game knowledge.
i need to find time for mgs2 - still amazing that i never played it after playing mgs1 a half dozen times
Me neither, except for my friends who likes it for the memes
I really want to like it but i don’t for now . Like I could play it right now but I’ll go for a Santa Claus game instead .
I will say that, overall, I enjoyed the game and would give it 4/5. But knowing how poorly the story is told and that the cutscene bloat will only get worse in the sequels really makes me question how Kojima got such a huge following
@charred knoll wait til you get to the triple and quadruple crosses later in the series.
MSG2 is one of my favourite ever games, if you like this I deffo recommend
Digging back into Snatcher and man I know Kojima has a exposition heavy kinda awkward writing style but man do I love it. This man is a genius at coming up with cool crazy worlds that you just wanna know more about
This. His writing may not be the greatest. But neither is Stephenie Meyer’s. Didn’t stop people from getting sucked into the world.
Yeah, like I think there's definitely some fair critique of his writing, but the man's ideas are brilliant. He comes up with the coolest craziest crap
I'm still bitter we didn't get to see his full vision for silent hills
It would have been so cool. I’m sure.
Super hyped to see what OD winds up being
Gonna see if I can finish this before the year is up. Shouldn't be too hard since I've played this couple times before.
NGL I see where people come from but Kojima stuff just looks like pretentious to me
never sucked me into it, neither the story or gameplay
I want to try snatcher tho
It absolutely thinks it's more complex and nuanced than it actually is, but we appreciate Kojima sincerely and mockingly at the same time.
yeah that is what it feels like
it jsut never clicked for me
I like more "honest" stuff if that makes sense
are you interested in things that aren't super well made but are super weird? that's his lane
along with Suda
more or less
I'm more into things that are well made AND are super weird
I like the "message" of Kojima stuff
but not the delivery I guess
I don't like his games, but if they were a book or something I might like it way more
A Kojima novel would be like bizarro Tom Clancy. Just 900 pages of random allegory and esoteric pop culture references.
Finished the game, first time playing any sort of Metal Gear game. Really enjoyed it overall, was quite impressed with the quality despite being a PS1 Era game. I can see why people worship Kojima. I can also see why his games aren't everyone's cup of tea.
Finished it tonight.
Ended up with the good ending after being told about the Tetris style tapping in an earlier reply.
One thing though, after you fight liquid ||meyrll says she’s been through something worse than torture that shameful|| and I don’t remember that being in the original. Insinuates (to me) stuff that’s pretty dark for a Nintendo game
This the first time ||meryll appears in a game. She’s a new character. ||
Original as in MGS on PS1. I was playing Twin Snakes.
You had no way to know that as I forgot to mention it
Not this msg again lol.
Fml editing
It’s still just a remake, so I think my comments till applies.
I think I might have asked the question badly. I interpret the Twin Snake dialogue to refer to ||meryll being sexually assaulted as part of the torture she suffered|| but I don’t remember that being part of the dialogue in the ps1 MGS, so I’m trying to see if anyone here, who’s playing the ps1 version has seen it in their playthrough
I can’t remember. I did the other route this time. I’ll be going through that route very soon though.
If anyone doesn’t play the twin snakes, the final image shown on screen before it voices to logo is ||some wolves’ bums….. || I’m not sure putting them centre screen was what was intended
I feel like that is part of the dialog but I had the other ending this time too
I played PS1, || she definitely says she has been through worse, though in the moment it didn't make me feel like she's referring to sexual assault, but I may be wrong.|| Your question reminded me one thing I was meaning to ask about, did Snake and Meryl || banged in the toilet early in the game? The zoom out made me think that, but I was also like, maybe I'm too dirty and it's just random ||
Can ||love bloom on the battlefield||?
No. They did not. There are two instances in the game where you can see || Meryl without pants.|| but that’s as far as anything goes. Both scenarios are retroachievements.
Why is this dog unkillable???
Don't kill the doggies!
I had a friend who made fart noises with his mouth every time ||someone got nanomachine'd by Snake||. It's still all I hear when I see those cutscenes.
So one is if ||you follow her quickly into the toilets|| when is the other?
It’s not that ||she’s been through worse|| it’s that ||she suffered something worse than torture||
Again every chance I’m misreading
Iirc, around the start when you first peer into the cells from the air vents.
Yoji Shinkawa and Yoshitaka Amano, so vastly different and yet so similar. Two of the greatest to ever do it.
Yes, megabareakuda is right. But for more detail, it’s when you || are crawling to get to the darpa chiefs cell. Her cell is on the way and you can peek down at her. If you leave the vent and come back, her exercise will change. After a few times (5 I think?), she will cycle through all the exercises again, but pantless.||
Lol kojima such a creeper.
There is no overworld map right ? I am kind of lot with the backtracking
No. It’s very small really. Just a few buildings. What are you currently trying to do?
Ok get it . Good to know it’s smaller than it looks . I was looking for a sniper rifle and I think I just found it !
How frickin tall is this stairwell?!?
the tower was really infuriating
Once upon a time I bought the mgs box set but only ever really played 3, so even though I’ve had this game for 15+ years, I’ve never played it before
I feel like I’ve been running up the stairs for a week
That seems much easier and far less painful
Use 30 stun grenades. It's the only way
I ended up banking grenades off the walls intermittently. Truly did feel like the only way.
Oh would you look at that, disc swapping doesn't seem to work for me.
Hopefully I'll figure it out.
Alright, crisis averted with a proper .m3u file. Now the metaling of the gear solid continues.
I've made it to the finale and ||what the fuck is this plot twist/info dump at the very end lol||
Make sure you watch past the credits also.
If you’ve read the previous game stuff, the terrible infants thing isn’t too much of a shock. The surprise bit is just that there were || twins instead of a single child. ||
The plot also was more interesting at the time since dolly the sheep had just been cloned. DNA and cloning were pretty hot topics at the time and frequently in the news cycle, as I remember.
It has a very 90s-current-events-vibe yeah. That “desert storm babies” reference for instance.
I like to think Mario and Luigi are clones ||fits the hidden theme that all the games share||
But in the vein of Twins with Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger
Yep
The real theme this month was ||Twins/clones||
Oh shit you're right
There some times is something that all the games share. That is a hidden theme
Bullets!
Anyone playing through this for GOTY?
They way I'm going gonna need all the time I can get!
I've played MGS1 multiple times, which really speeds the game up. Just knowing where to go and what to do cuts the play time dramatically.
Having guides helps with that. Didn't get much past the revolver fight back in the day, not knowing where to go.
Resorted to guides a couple of times already, just in the process of|| mapping the port 2 controller!||
The first time I played I just played on easy so it was less stressful to explore and get to know the areas
Disc 2, almost there. Really enjoying it, though the cut scenes are a bit much already, not sure how I'd feel about the rest of the series if they get longer and longer!
I am happy to see that MSG1 has a pretty good widescreen patch. I'll start the game up proper tomorrow.
Good ol' Solid Snake, flirting with every woman he can find.
And done. Wasn't sure the boss fight was gonna finish before new year for a minute there, went in for days.
Great game, can see why so many people love it.
Didn't realise it had different endings || meryl died, was looking at a guide that said if I failed the second torture test, you got a better a suit, didn't mention that made you lose Meryl. Still I liked David and hal scooting off into the distance, might even prefer it ! ||
I do think that the ending you got is the one that makes more narrative sense imo.
About half way through
Yeah was good ending, if a little long! Looking forward to playing Yakuza in the new year, was that your nomination originally?
