#Powkiddy RGB30
1 messages Ā· Page 3 of 1
got a package update š¦
they created the shipping label
working through the typhoon
I can't even get the Linux file
Ali or direct?
Ah, makes sense.
It looks like an analog pocket
Just ordered one , but I am in tour next week
not able to try it on the tour
they said they were adding a screen protector for the rgb30 to the shop soon and would message me when they do
I'll probably order it and the protector together once that happens
Oh hey, you're the man who made the console-to-screen tool, thank you so much, incredibly helpful! (Especially with this device haha)
Update: played Sonic Pocket Adventure on my 35xx yesterday
I can confirm with 100% certainty that this makes the NGPC library worth caring about
Holy fuck I NEEED THIS @powkiddyfuckinglistenPLEASE
False alarm apparently the Pico 8 website just doesn't work properly on mobile
Is the plastic on this closer to the max3 or rk2023. If RK2023 I will pass
Sadly... rk2023. To be honest.
Noooooooooooo
I mean I suspected as much from seeing the plastic in Taki's video... that's a damn shame š¦
Which handheld is this?
Thatās the retro pixel pocket - also 720x720 but terrible
Crappy version of android as the OS with no touchscreen, bad controls
Thatās a bummer, looks like a great gbc style form factor
Yeah, right now the analogue pocket is your only option if thatās the sort of thing youāre looking for I think
And thatās $$$$
Or you live with the horizontal and get this for 85 USD
If we could get a fork of JelOS on the RPP I believe it would suit me better than the RGB30.. āGameboy-loverā.. but until then and the actual purchasable thing.. this is probably a better bet.
should get my rgb30 tomorrow or tuesday
but it comes with no cards, so I donāt have any OS
I asked powkiddy and the customer service doesnāt have the file from the engineers yet
The new jelos release that supports it should be out like tomorrow
They already did a PR for the release
awesome
And that usually happens like 12 hours before the release
Barring any major bugs being found during that time
Iām excited because the same release also will improve the max 3 sticks
I donāt think theyāve shipped anything international yet
Outside of review and dev units
i tried to cancel my rgb30 order and they keep ignoring me
Mine did ship out, along with my RGB10Max3, tracking shows a departure from facility to service provider.
Is that from the powkiddy website or did you buy it from somewhere else
keep in mind the typhoon situation means a bunch of people have been either stuck at home and/or without power etc the past few days
judging by shipping notices powkiddy's warehouse was still open but who knows where their customer service people work
https://github.com/JustEnoughLinuxOS/distribution/releases/tag/20230903 it was just released
The factory system is emuelec 4.5
Can you clarify which download is the right one? Unless I'm missing something there's no rgb30 build?
Oh nevermind it's just the chip number not device is that right? Been ages since I used jelos
Yeah cheers I just got confused because the top of the page lists specific devices but I didn't realise the builds were agnostic to that.
Mine just shipped apparently, international powkiddy website
Just got my shipping notice
@forest kite was trying to cancel cause I grabbed an Analogue Pocket instead the other day
do we have size comparison photos with other devices?
powkiddy rgb30 Close look test games
powkiddy rgb30 Unboxing and Review
Powkiddy is now selling the RGB30, a 145 x 86.5 x 18 mm and 207 g gaming handheld powered by a Rockchip RK3566 chipset and 1 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The Powkiddy RGB30 also has a 720p display and a 4,100 mAh battery, among other features.Powkiddy has now started selling the RGB30, a gaming handheld that turned up onl...
Was Russ getting one of these soon?
The specs feel like an overkill for this one
My PK RGB30 Shipped!
Wooooo
Get offline and unbox you mad lad
No shipped not arrived
Oh i got too excited sorry
I do too don't worry
Very tempted to get one just for that
What color?
Id love this screen with some lower specs for ~ $70 ish
That's exclusively why I got it. I'm one of those guys that owns a Pico-8 licence
Also White
I do also own one! Also gonna go white

If you have the license I think it's worth it
Good Pico-8 machines have been few and far between
The Clockwork Pi GameShell had official Pico-8 built in but the screen was awful
The FunnyPlaying Retro Pixel Pocket had a good square screen but kinda trash software and mediocre buttons
Any good game recs? I've never played Pico 8 but I bought a licence when I bought this device
Celeste
Celeste 100% and it's many... Many.. Rom hacks
Fuz is a good Demake of Fez
Poom is a good Demake of Doom
I think I may order this soon, you are getting me excited lol
Super crane bug
Also gonna be nice to explore the GB and GBC libraries
It will probally go for something close to that on an ali sale, got my x55 for 75
Don't forget the Watara Supervision
1:1 screen there
Dont even know anything about that but sure! Also Neo Geo Pocket i think
Just barely not a square
160x152
20:19 aspect ratio
Close enough tho lol
Oooh
And i played this a lot
Like gta but golf
š
You can wreck the cart in the pond
Good for vertical screen games
somebody may have made this distinction already, but in case it hasnt been put out there... 4x3 consoles that we're used to seeing on 3.5inch 4x3 screens is actually just a hair larger on the 4inch square screen.
we're just not used to seeing it with black bars on the top and bottom. so it makes it feel like it's small.
you could use a filter or shader to push it up
so thereās just one big black bar below
That's what I'll be doing.
is it image-adjustment ?
Yeah, a few of us have been saying that all along. Still funny how many people don't get it, haha.
I think so? @forest kite figured it out the other day.
ok ok, I thought I read it somewhere then the penny dropped for me what the plan was
If you crop overscan (8 pixels on the left and right that are usually garbage in most NES games) you get a full 240x240@3x, no letterboxing. I'm a pixel purist and was skeptical of this at first but it looks great on the FunKey/Q36/Nano.
eg.
(Castlevania I and III are the only NES games I can think off of the top of my head that run their hud right to the edges of the screen.)
You donāt need to use a filter or shader (which would be computationally expensive to move the pixels on a per pixel per frame basis) - you just have to change your aspect ratio in RA to ācustomā and then you can pick the exact pixel the display area starts on as X,Y (so 0, 0 for top alignment) and then how wide and tall you want the picture to be in pixels (so 720, 540 for 4:3, 720, 480 for gba, etc)
I may need to make some overlays to put something in that big black bar near the bottom - leaning towards something that looks like the control bar on a crt like the old commander keen main menus
Or maybe just a jelos/powkiddy banner
I am now leaning towards ordering black - Iām worried even if the colour is the same between my max 3 and this both in blue the plastic texture not matching would be really obvious
You might be right that 3566 is overkill but 3326 is the only other chip they couldāve done that would have proper firmware and real pico 8 support and I highly doubt thereās a $20 difference in BOM there (maybe a buck or two tops?)
Yeah im not familiar with pricing of the components just have this feeling that sticks and buttons and performance just end up not used due to the screen's properties
just ordered!
its a fun and unique device
and powkiddy deserves some praise for how they are handling software
Praise for giving up and letting the Jelos team do their thing š
I just find it amusing that they have no concept of what their products are good for or how human hands work but that goes for all of them
The alternative being pulling an anbernic and stealing a two year old emuelec build and refusing to share your kernel sources
Nobody makes their own stock firmware, they either do FOSS properly or they cheat and steal
I do understand why this is a lot better option. But its like giving a cookie to a 3 yo for not going near the stove
I know the bar is low, but also somehow powkiddy is in the minority by actually meeting it
Anbernic needs to just go away at this point
I thought they could reverse course before the nano
Then the Nano firmware was especially egregious
when all the other kids are playing on top of the stove, yeah maybe a cookie is fine š¤£
it's funny that powkiddy is surprising in terms of overall quality this year and anbernic suprised us with the low price of the 405v
opposites day
Anbernic must have realised how finite their market is
I still donāt think the 405v is actually that aggressively priced after shipping is taken into account but it is more fair than I was expecting
Not aggressively priced like the rp2s is anyway
(Not saying the 405v shouldnāt be more than the 2s, but after shipping is factored in itās more than the x28)
well, it's like 30 to 60 bucks cheaper than everyone was guessing
taking into account that anbernic is usually pretty expensive
This has HDMI right?
Iirc, yes
@maiden slate you're a sonic guy right? https://youtu.be/moYIIdXpFJQ?si=qLtmDFOS-rn9mYx2
Here we take a look at what is likely the biggest third party release for the Neo Geo Pocket with Sonic the Hedgehog: Pocket Adventure. Notable for being the first Sonic game on a non-Sega system that Sega was directly involved with in its development, Sonic Pocket Adventure borrows heavily from Sonic 2 while managing to put its own spin on thin...
this is gonna be one of the first games I play on the RGB30 I think
yassss
gotta go play it real fast
but definitely
I tried it on my 35xx and it's a great game
should be hot as fuck on RGB30
Gotta get a neo geo pocket library going before mine arrives
the NGPC looks like it has some bangers
the only two I'm definitely gonna try off the top of my head are sonic pocket adventure and metal slug first mission
Oh yeah I need new sd cards
https://youtu.be/v6vhtqQ-Cug?si=xLaNM74qjNvYcBwe this also looks dope
To go along with the Halloween season, we take a look at the horror themed Dark Arms: Beast Buster; a lesser known top-down dungeon crawler for the Neo Geo Pocket. Not only is Dark Arms an enjoyable single-player game, but it's also one of the best on the system.
Follow me on Twitter at: http://twitter.com/C_Dingo_
Why does this say anbernic lmao
This machine doesn't have any print on it
Youāre gonna make powkiddy never sell us an unbranded device again
You could change it to any brand you like
I love that thereās no branding on it or the max 3
I might make a bottom bezel overlay for 4:3 stuff that is just tux and the word āLINUXā
Or a JELOS one with the ascii word mark used on boot
Over on the other (RGH) discord someone shared what theyāre working on for integer scale overlays
I like the offset rather than center aligning the image
(Shoutout to Jeltron if youāre lurking here under a different user)
NGPC had an at the time massive screen on a handheld at 2.7ā nearly square, here itāll be 3.5ā integer scaled or 3.9ā not
2.9ā or 3.0ā on a 640x480 3.5ā for reference
Is this a new Anbernic RG30? š
if the 4.0" 720x720 would be too big for a vertical, there is a 3.5" 1080x1080 out in the wild š
Looks like PKās Ali storefront started shipping š
Cursed
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this is straight up the best thing Powkiddy ever made
Better than the v90 tho?
the v90 was so perfect for what it was at the time it came out\
Every single one of their previous devices had some dumb flaws that could have been avoided with 2 more days of R&D, this doesn't seem to, besides apparently very cheap plastic
Hmm that's a good argument, that one was before my time š
For the time the V90 was the best thing they had
Right now this might take the cake
Yeah that's what I'd say tbh
V90 isn't really a good buy anymore, the only reason to get it would be GBA nostalgia, but it doesn't play GBA well
Itās still the only good little clamshell but the only system I actually enjoy playing on my v90 is NES
So yeah I'd say this definitely looks Powkiddy's best handheld rn
RK2023 is outclassed by this and RG353PS
V90 can be a better device with Garlic
X55 is pretty decent, but it seems designed for a more powerful chip than it has
I want this build but 4:3. I can't choose this over the rk2023 because of it
X28 is just overpriced trash
10 Max 3 Pro is the first one I actually considered buying for myself, add WiFi and faster charging to it and we'd be cooking
But this
I just can't think of any flaws
this is just a niche device i think. like for people who want a screen like this its great but a lot of people wont really have a use for it
but thats okay, they make a lot of devices! things dont have to be one size fits all
It's not only perfect for GB, GBC and NGPC, but it's also better for NES and SNES than a 4:3 screen
Powkiddy RGB30: If you don't mind bezels, this is the one for you
rk2023, x55, and rgb30 are 3 very different devices with the same chipset and thats totally okay. more options for the consumer
I'd never buy the RK2023 because of the build quality and d-pad, this fixed the d-pad and changes the screen to something more unique and, tbh, better for my use
I'm team 4:3 snes so this screen would bother me
Yeah, I like that.
I still think the 353M is by far the best 3566 device, but well, that thing is expensive as fuck for what it is.
The dpad stuff on the rk2023 is overblown. I was honestly surprised how adequate it was. The plastic is smudgy and annoying though
I hate how the stretched graphics look, curious why you prefer it?
Dpads are very personal though
Grew up playing SNES on a 4:3 screen so looks normal to me. 8:7 seems stretched š different strokes
cuz the graphics were designed to look that way for the most part lol. it really bugs me when things that are supposed to be round arent. nes i can go either way but by snes most devs accounted for the stretch
I hope this thing sells well though. Need more interesting landscape devices
http://i.imgur.com/rkDwAmh.png 8:7 snes moment
I thought i broke my rgb30 tonight and was very sad. I was doing the dpad fix and LED cover up, and i didn't disconnect the battery while I was in there. I thought for sure I shorted it. It wouldn't turn on. But I plugged my usb cable in and it turned on (with battery at 100%).
my baby is safe
but yeah personally i am team 4:3 and i dont think i play enough gb/ngpc/pico 8 to justify a handheld for thsoe but i do think this looks really good. but i have a 353m already
I keep talking myself in and out of this one despite me saying the screen doesn't work for me lol. I just get excited for plastic landscape non-widescreen
Itās just as big as a 3.5ā 4:3 screen for 4:3 content and higher res to boot
If youāre on team 4:3 snes
what are you guys after in a 4:3 horizontal handheld? I would have thought there would be an option out there already
Yep - that's why I grabbed an rk2023. Not really concerned with res and the larger screen just equals larger device for features id never use
More power. Dpad top. Ideally larger than 3.5in. Not shaped like a SNES controller/inline shoulders. Rk2023 is really the only option right now
And plastic
Powkiddy ali store sending me coupons for this
So your ideal would be a plastic alternative to the 405m? Do you require 4:3? The max 3 has an equivalent 4:3 res and display size but is also widescreen (and integer scales gba)
No built in wifi though
(Works with a supported dongle)
i have a 353m already which is the main reason im not getting this tbh. i would probably go for this over rk2023 cuz yeah the play area and res for 4:3 are still good
It's a handle-ability thing (I may have made up a word) I don't need to travel with it in my pocket but if my kid starts to taunt the dog or try to climb down the stairs I want something I can quickly half insert into a pocket. 16:9 devices are generally more awkward and I don't play any 16:9 content
What we all really want is an upgraded 351p š
https://youtu.be/RD1ehD2RuHA?si=ElRPacUUHpnqM9_K I might play this on it lol
The Legend of Super Mario - Save Mushroom Kingdom
Hack of The Legend of Zelda [NES]
Released by NesDraug @NesDraug
v1.0 https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/8050/
Release Date: 31 August 2023
"Welcome to Mushroom Kingdom, where Bowser has captured Princess Toadstool and thrown the Kingdom into tyranny. It is up to a heroic plumber named Mario to ...
Does it really need to be updated?
I'd be fine with just a cheaper 351p lol. Either drop the price on the current one or drop the 35xx soc inside if 3326 is too expensive, price it at $50 and it's a winner XD
I'd like them to drop the sticks and up the res to not be as bad for other non-gba systems
but yeah the current one cheaper would just be a dedicated GBA machine for me and nothing else
720x480 is the next 3:2 res up that would also work for 4:3 systems
no idea if you can get that in 3.5" though
I know you can in 3"
Yeah - bigger screen and enough power to play more psx without tweaks
the max 3 actually being bigger for 4:3 content is my only hesistation here but also I love GBC/NGPC/NES
Yall know you dont have to like every handheld right? Its okay to just know it aint for you.
Thanks for wisdom. Also not everyone gets free handhelds.
Yep. Remembering this makes me a little bit less of a Retroid hater.
Interesting. You should write an article about how retrogamers create a toxic culture out of hating devices not for them. You know... journalistic outreach
And there it is. Ha.
Eh people like what they like.
There's not a lot you can do to convince them otherwise.
Gotta focus on what we like rather than what others hate
I like that there's a variety of devices. I'm someone who is OK with (and prefers) having a device that specialises in a few systems. It improves the experience and helps with the overwhelming options if you emulate everything on one handheld. The rgb30 will be a gameboy and Pico 8 for me and I won't even put other roms on it.
I feel like I'm kinda schizo about this topic
On one day, I feel completely happy with what I enjoy and like the fact that other people have different options that suit their needs
On another day, I see a handheld that matches my needs almost perfectly, but has one or two crucial flaws (RP3+ buttons, RK2023 d-pad and logo) and I can't help but rage that it wasn't just that little bit closer to my preferences haha
I am starting to lean into this idea as well. I used to put only 2-3 roms per week on my RG280V and it worked wonders for my enjoyment of the games I did have on there.
Now my 35xx has hundreds of ROMs for like 20 different systems and choosing a game to actually play is... overwhelming lol
It's definitely a difficult one. I found the gotx stuff helped get me playing. Now with more specific devices I find I can choose things a bit easier because I'll narrow down to a system or even genre because of the handheld I want to use
What I'm considering right now:
35xx
GB (because it looks like a DMG)
NES (for games that look better in 4:3)
SNES (for games that look better in 4:3)
MegaDrive/MegaCD
Master System
PS1 (d-pad games)
351p
GBA
rgb30
GBC
GG
NGPC
NES (for games that look better in 8:7)
SNES (for games that look better in 8:7)
PICO-8
405m
Atari 2600/5200/7800 (these games work better with a stick than d-pad)
NeoGeo
PS1 (stick games)
N64
32X
Saturn
Dreamcast
welp, ordered this one too, now i have 3 consoles coming my way
i should sell a few
@maiden slate Are these devices you have already?
Nope, only 35xx (+PSP and Switch) so far
I only planned to get a 405m and be done, but I do often find myself overwhelmed with the amount of stuff on my 35xx and want to break that library down š¤š»
i wouldn't bother buying a 351p then
the screen, even if perfect for gba, is pretty bad
i enjoyed playing gba more on my 351v than my 351p just cause the screen looks so ugly on the 351p
I like the 351p screen but I had issues with the audio crackling even without WiFi. Dpad also wasn't the best
for me it was mostly the ugly screen and really stiff controls that made me sell it, also it had some battery issues
(sarcasm warning) Haters! Haters! How dare you have an opinion that isn't positive about everything!
i can if you want to
I wish a more modern version existed
But GBA is my favourite system of all time (well, second after the X360, but can't handheld that) so I want as good an experience as possible for it. š
There is the 552, its my gba machine
7x integer scale with minuscule bars on top and bottom
A tad bit overpriced tho
The max 3 is also a great fit
Sometimes it's well into the "let me speak to the manager" territory as if we're on QQ and not Discord and these companies actually read all that ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Good times (not)
It's way too big for me. As much as I like GBA games, playing them on a screen bigger than 3-4 inches feels wrong.
Dont forget neogeopocket (color) and pc engine (8:7) or nes (pal 16:15) or snes (8:7) and vertical shooters
Max 3 could work, but it's still pretty big for a GBA while 405m seems better for all other systems I'd want to play on it
You need the ktr1 for gba
Huh, you kinda had me with PCE there
But I think D-pad would have to be exceptional for me to consider this as a dedicated shmup machine
I thought about it. But it's too expensive to use with just one system and the Indigo 351p looks waaay more nostalgic
I already have a DMG looking handheld, so I kinda want a GBA-looking one too haha
I originally bought the Indigo RP2+ but that device was... bad
I own the $169 4gb model and it is awesome
If you ask the developer he will make a special colour for you I guess but it will cost you š
Like I thought Anbernic was great, but MM+ kinda surprised me there, it's just more... fluid, I guess? Second to probably only my 8bitdo M30 with a Sega-style disc d-pad
You can actually drop 351p because on rgb30 you get 3x integer for gba
Stiff controls seem to be a reccuring pattern with Anbernic. I really didn't like it on rg300x...
yeah but it has a 1:1 screen and doesn't have an Indigo colour, while 351p is 3:2 and does have that colour ;P
FWIW no problems with that on my RG280V or RG35XX!
Hh I can totally understand the need for the right aesthetics š I was not intriqued by gba indigo at all (for me it's glacier blue), but than I actually got one indigo broken for repair and I really like the color.
The Indigo GBA was my first handheld ever, the nostalgia is waaay too strong haha.
And Anvbernic usually nails the colour scheme, the 35xx looks just like my DMG did before it yellowed out a bit over the years š
it is also very subjective so not easy to judge, but I am probably not buying another anbernic, unless it's something totaly great and unique..
I can imagine. I was actually pretty disappointed inMyioo mini+ dmg color, totaly different shade of grey. That is probly the only thing I envy to 35xx. That and hdmi port..
to put it into perspective, if you ever had an RP2+, now THAT thing had veeery stiff controls, was unusable for me
I haven't. And I also discarded plan for RP Flip because of some comments about stiff controls (dpad mostly)..
i've only had them with the rg351p, the 351v, rg35xx and rg503 have perfect controls for me, not too soft or stiff
How to group those you mentioned, as now it's a little bit ambiguous...
in stiff-soft controls? all pretty similar except for the 351p which were too stiff
I wouldn't use the 405m for N64. The stick and shoulders are too close for me. Played through Sin and Punishment on it and wasn't a great time.
I see, all clear now. Fortunately they don't sell any that would intrigued me right now so I don't have to risk it š¬

some nice footage in there
Hmm, what would you recommend instead?
I don't expect that to be an issue, I played through Ocarina of Time with a Series X controller which also has the left shoulder right above the left stick
To be honest I have found anything yet for good n64 emulation(stupid Nintendo and their crazy controller).
max 3 controls aren't that bad for n64 imo (the speakers push the sticks closer to the middle of the device than the bottom so it's not a bad distance to me - miles better than the 353VS anyway) but the max 3 is still a bit rough around the edges and honestly I'm growing to hate using a right stick as c buttons
tried playing banjo tooie last night and immediately hated the way the c button stick thing worked to use the various kazooie moves
its fine in games where the c buttons are camera control but in OoT or BK (which are the two n64 games I actually want to play in current year) it sucks
Burger king
You'll love the T618 device I'm working on (if it ever comes out (probably not))
(sorry)
I wonder if I should instead use dpad as c buttons and right stick as dpad
BK is the best n64 game and the worst fast food place at the same time
Now try mischief makers! Lol
The only way my brain interprets "bk" lol
BāK

I put some more NES games on my q36 to try and convince me I donāt need this and itās having the opposite effect
Looks so good on the square screen but the q36 is so itty bitty

No need to apologize for your language, you donāt see any of us crusty anglophones apologizing for our vids being in English š

I assume the RGB30 doesn't support high speed charging, but will it still charge off a high speed port, or do you need to be sure to use a low voltage block
great video!
Good question, was just wondering this as well. My RG353V had to be charged off a 5V/2A brick
I assume this will be the same way
NGPC was even worse, with the 1.5x scaling the scrolling backgrounds in metal slug first mission look really bad
I love the q36 form factor (especially for GBC) but it is failing at helping me resist the RGB30
Thatās fair, and itās not like I canāt keep a MM+ in my pocket pretty much full time instead
When my Polish family asks me why is everything I write/record in English I'm like
"Because I know you can't understand it so you won't criticise it like you always do"
I should learn another language, I feel so uncultured only being fluent in the one
Between this hobby and my tastes in cuisine simplified mandarin might be a fun and difficult one. I have a tiny baseline of German but it doesnāt seem very practical - almost nobody speaks German without speaking at least a little bit of English so it wouldnāt expand my travel opportunities the way Mandarin, Arabic, or Spanish would.
It's so hard to learn a new language when nobody around speaks it wuth you
Like none of my friends want to talk to me in C
I do have one friend who could speak Portuguese with me
I used to have a co-worker who spoke Spanish but she just went back to school
Same. My 280V was pissing me off because the build quality was so good but the screen was miniscule and controls cramped. I can't imagine using a funkey lol.
One co-worker can speak Tagalog but I think sheās pretty rusty - it was a household thing for her as a child but she doesnāt speak it anymore since moving out on her own
Don't feel bad for it, when you're born in a country with a rich culture (USA, Britain, China, Japan) you don't really have a need for a second language like we do in less dominant countries
I learned English at the age of 10 because I was really into retro gaming (that was back in 2008) and nobody in this country even knew what an SNES is
Though learning a language is always fun and rewarding and if you have any drive to do it, it's worth a try. It's easier than you expect!
If the language is very similar (like English is to Dutch or Swedish), you can become conversational quite fast
Unfortunately the ones Iām interested in learning for the most part are very different (often using an entirely different alphabet) but I think Spanish is supposed to be fairly easy
My advice is, choose something you're emotionally connected with
Even if the language isn't very practical, but you love a country's music, cuisine or videogames or whatever, that can be enough of a connection to carry you through the learning process
I learned Spanish when I was 15 because I loved Enrique Iglesias' music, and all the girls were into him, so I was like fuck it I'll learn the language to understand wtf he's singing about and impress girls (it did work)
as a Spaniard, I'd definitely recommend Spanish, so many people in the western world speak it
But yeah Spanish seems very useful and Iām more likely to actually get to talk to Spanish speakers here
feel free to message if you end up doing it and need some help
Don't fuss too much about the difficulty. If it's your first time learning a language, it will be challenging anyway.
Like, if you like Chinese culture a lot, or the food or whatever, chances are learning how to talk about these subjects in Mandarin will actually feel easier than learning an "easy" language you don't care much about.
Korean is super hard but I enjoyed learning it so I can pretend I'm good at League of Legends and flame my teammates without getting banned
I found the secret there is to be verbose and witty to get around the chat filter
well, asian languages are way, way harder than anything with the roman alphabet, and the vocabulary is completely different
āKysā gets you banned, ānobody would be overly bothered if you perished in a house fireā seems to get a pass on league
i've been trying to learn japanese all my life and by using the same method i used for english, i barely got any results
try keep yourself safe
I love everything about Spanish culture. The music, the literature, the life philosophy... But there is one thing I could never understand.
How do your former colonies have such amazing food with tons of spices while Spanish food is just whatever
But Iām honestly surprised I got away with it
i don't think our food is whatever, but it's definitely simpler and less full of spices
have you tried it in Spain?
Yesssss, I love writing subtly aggressive novels in chat.
"It's okay mate, I'm not gonna flame you for this gank, you're already getting it a lot from your parents"
Yeah same, as I got older I just want to play a game and have a good time, I focus on my own shit and don't care too much if someone ints me
But if I get someone I can have genuine banter in chat with, oh my god I do love me that!
Haha I meant it as a dig, your food is fine. š
I do like me a tortilla de patatas or one of those sandwiches with like grated tomatoes and jamón? I also learned how to cook a paella in Valencia, but I'm not a big fan of rice.
It's just that Mexico, central america and the Philippines have such god tier cuisines that I am surprised more of that stuff hasn't made it back to the mainland š
i guess we mostly got some of the raw ingredients back, but not the full dishes
Iām addicted to Mexican cuisine since moving to like the one part of Canada where Mexican people live in any decent number
i'd say we excel at very hearty meals, spoon stuff, fatty meat
i love that mexican is a separate thing cause it feels much more special, gonna go eat mexican with my mom this weekend
Ohh, besides your tortillas I haven't really experienced that, any examples?
Enjoy! It's some of my favourite food in the world!
Like between India, Mexico and South Korea, I could eat a different dish every day and not run out of good stuff for like a year haha
fabada from asturias, cocido from madrid, lentils and chorizo, fries with fried eggs and picadillo
gotta stop ir I'll get hungry
Thereās a great Korean place around the corner from me I need to go to again
yeah those are my favs too, with some other asian stuff
Man I envy you soooo much
The closest Korean place is like 100km from here so I need to cook it all myself š¢
Iām making some weird Korean Italian fusion stuff for dinner tonight
Love random fusion stuff
Shiitake mushroom risotto and Gochujang meatballs
Fabada definitely seems like something up my alley!
I'm one of the few people outside of the UK (to be fair, I did live there) who enjoys the full English breakfast, I loooooooooove beans
I'd say it's a totally different thing, but it's from my region and always thought it's amazing
if you ever find this, try it, it's extremely faithful to how a proper fabada should taste even if not super high quality
so you can get s good idea of how it is
Ha, okay, I'll look out for it in international stores.
I'm going to Amsterdam this month, they have surprisingly large amounts of Spanish stuff there lol
have a good trip then!
Because C is ugly š
The Philippines have good food?šššš
gracias!
oh hell yeah bro
tapsilog is god tier for breakfast
C-riously? š
mine didn't ship, but i ordered it today, supposedly 10 day shipping
wonder which of the 3 incoming ones will win
My wife is a Thai and not a Pinay for a good reason but if you seriously consider Filipino food as better than Spanisch food then you have a really strange taste š
If you like Filipino food then try frito mallorquin! You will like it for sure š
@forest kite This is definitely going to need a list of screen configurations for this device, maybe some cool bottom-only frames for moving the 2:3, 4:3, and 16:9 content to the top of the screen, as well as some side frames for playing vertical 4:3
i'm pretty excited for the device though, 1:1 is the way of the future!
Just play turbografx 16 and nes in cropped mode and you donāt need any bezels š
Haha, i'll be playing some 2DS, GBA and 4:3 content on there too
it'll replace my 353
Yeah I want to replace my 353VS with this
Hopefully even replace my MM+ as my daily carry
I wonder how many people who are enthusiastic for this device have a nano, q36, or Funkey in their past/present lineup. I know if I hadnāt experienced a 1:1 screen before (specifically how well nes/snes work cropped to 1:1) Iād probably be more hesitant about this. I know I scoffed at the previous two micro consoles until I was gifted a nano, now Iām a convert (of the ratio if not the micro form factor š )
I love my nano, it's basically always in my pocket, i even upgraded the speaker (partially because I thought it was the source of the popping issue)
Funkey was great for me at the time
Retro Pixel Pocket was not
Maybe the third time will be the charm
I use a q36 fairly often - I like the aspect ratio and how pocketable it is, and I find it surprisingly ergonomic for its class of device being horizontal, but the screen is a bit tiny for me and the screen res is not amazing at 240x240 for a lot of stuff
But it did sell me on it being fine to shave a few pixels off the sides of 256 horizontal res systems to make them integer scale at 240
I was just playing SMB1 on my q36 at work earlier
Why are you guys interested in this device? For playing Gameboy games or Pico 8? š¤
With a resolution of 720x720 does the RA Gameboy shader look nice?
Cropped and integer scaled nes/snes/turbografx-16, better res for vertical 3:4 arcade cabs, gb, pico 8, Neo Geo pocket colour, oddly enough if youāre fine with bezels this is just as large of a screen as the 3.5ā 640x480 for GBA but itās a perfect integer scale instead of an awkward res, and for anything you arenāt integer scaling itās just as large of a display area as the 3.5ā 4:3 screens for 4:3 stuff even and a higher res to boot (720x540)
So if you want to stretch to 4:3 on systems like sega genesis and neogeo (the arcade system, not the pocket) and crt filter itāll work at least as well if not better
If you integer scale genesis/neogeo then youāll prefer a 640x480 since those systems are 320x224 native res
It does everything that something like the 353 does, except higher resolution, larger screens for a good number of systems including Pico8 and vertical games.
for me its having something that can do 3:4 arcade games just as well as 4:3 stuff with fairly minimal borders either way
like i see it as a versatile device rather than a specialised one
Too bad itās not a vertical device. Would be such a great Gameboy replacement
I don't, I always wanted a squareish screen, but I hate small devices š
because funny square
mostly gameboy and DS, i suppose, and that it's just so quirky and neat
But some DS games need touch input or not? Is it possible to play them with the joystick?
some need touch input, some don't, some it's minimal
like pokƩmon games on ds only require you to tap once in the whole game i think
Wondering can RA actually do this in the correct order? Like crop first and scale to integer after, to use the whole screen? Or would it still use the lower integer multiplier based on uncropped res?
yeah you can get away with just right-stick stylus comfortably in a lot of DS titles
just picked mine up
will do a stream later https://www.youtube.com/live/RNHEy1NCr28?si=lOLyxAzMUx62EUFW
in about 2 hours
Thereās a setting called āinteger overscanā that tells it to round up and crop instead of down
How does it feel when you hold it? Allso does it feel sturdy enough?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNHEy1NCr28
First question was about ergonomics and it doesn't seem great... but not terrible either. I think that's what is holding me back at the moment from ordering, vertical handhelds just feel more comfy to me. Screen is š¤©
I'm wondering if it was designed in response to the RPP, not knowing the RPP would suck. Instead of competing with another vertical, they made a device for people who wanted that screen in a horizontal format.
The RPP screen is smaller which I think fits better on a gameboy shell
Though really this screen is the same width as the 3.5ā 4:3 we all know and tolerate so a device that is basically a 353vs but with the taller screen and no sticks sounds good to me
As long as they redesign the shoulder buttons
Thanks for that!
thanks for tuning in
Yeah the ergo definitely doesnāt look uber comfy but better than MM+ means it would be an improvement from my current daily driver š¬
I generally donāt mind flat slab handhelds, the max 3 is not super comfy either but itās fine
I have quite thin hands btw
not sausage fingers
just as a guide
really impressed by the vertical shooters on this
if you like vertical arcade shooters - it's a must buy
..I wouldnāt say the RPP flat out sucks.. itās just rough. The screen is nice and the design is great, but the OS is not optimal and the input seems to differ from device to device.
Is arkos confirmed? If so, I'll pick one up
he's working on it AFAICT
there's one other CFW that may or may not come to this but it hasn't been posted about on either of the two big public discords so I don't want to call it out yet
yeah its a comically large battery for a 3566
I think the screen uses more battery than other 3566 devices
Sure, and I still want one if they fix the issues and decide to sell it again. Point is that they couldn't know how the RPP would be received when starting to make this (or deciding to make it at least), so better to go to market with something that has differentiation. Horizontal layout with larger screen, compared to the RPP. Maybe if this is successful they'll invest in making a vertical.
Ping me when it comes out, arkos I mean
goddang
I found myself using my pinky and ring finger to hold the bottom so my thumb had better position on the dpad
itās okay, not perfect ergonomics but better than mm+
I hook the bottom with my pinky on the max 3 and MM+ too
maybe I'm just a masochist for plain rectangle controllers from being handed an NES at age 3
tempted to get a white with no screen protector and see how well it survives in my pocket
the dpad, I may change it with another because itās a bit harder plastic
I like the max 3 dpad and it's the same so I'm not overly worried there
this is the only negative stuff I can think of after an hour
no sticky buttons, dead pixels
3.5mm jack is surprisingly low noise
(you can use usb-c >3.5mm of course)
are you connected to wifi? I always find with these rockchip handhelds the headphone jack is good with wifi off but kinda noisy with it on
I can't wait to play all the PC engine shmups on here
oh right, can you have a single card setup on this? i don't think i'll add too many roms
might just go with a single 64gb
Definitely
If you use a windows pc you might not want to though
Since if you use a single card I believe it has to be exfat
At least in JELOS
You could always access to the rom storage via SSH though
hmm, i'll look into it, i have a single card on my 35xx but maybe that works different
You might want to try using the crappy card included as your OS card and then a decent card in the rom slot
yeah, I would recomend a 2 card setup for jelos
eh, i'll just buy another card, they're cheap now
Plus if this gets arkOS support I believe you can use the same rom card for both and just swap the OS card (at least I think they use the exact same folder structure for the rom card)
just seeing if i could save a bit since i have the rp3+ and 405v incoming so i'll have to buy pretty big cards for those
This 100% true if you use a second card.
Yeah I just started buying 64gb cards by the 5 pack lol
got a deal on ali, 6 64gb for less than 10 usd lol
I will belive it when they arrive
i'm thinking 512 for the rp3+ and 1tb for the 405v š
might go 512 for both, but ps2 games are heavy
for those I would go with 256 but I dont really play ps2 or GC on them
i wanna play some of those even if the performance is not ideal
i bet there's a bunch of games i like that play well though, i already have a big external hdd set up as a ps2 emulator
bute yeah, the rgb30 will be mostly limited to the weirder stuff that fits it more, gameboy, ds, that stuff
I was gonna say it also does 4:3 stuff just as well as 3.5ā 4:3 devices but then I realized youāre getting a 4ā 4:3 device for that
yep exactly
I only wish the 3566 was strong enough to play the later CAVE shooters
But the T618 is also not quite strong enough
Need a d900 or better portrait handheld for later shmups and pinball
I will die on that hill
Touchscreen for NDS too pls
But thatās a very different device than this cheap and cheerful GBC/NES/Turbogfx/NGPC/old school arcade device
true
maybe on the tail end of the t618
they'll probably pay attention to how many sales the rgb30 gets for these kinda devices in the future
Well, giving them another week or so to see if they make good on offering a screen protector before I order
i already did, i don't pocket my devices so no screen protector shouldn't be a big deal
forgot to check if they offered a case though, i wonder if it will fit in the one i use for my 351v
should
Okay but what if we could get like, a premium version of this with NGP clicky sticks
that'd be endgame I'll never buy a lower spec device again
The perfect arcade system
Honestly I hope we get a modern a12/a13 equivalent from powkiddy once they start rolling on 3588 devices
Now that would be an arcade system
Probably my ideal 3588 tbh since I doubt weāll get a pocketable one and I have no interest in switch style ones (may as well go x86 at that point for me)
i wonder if they could source that stick from 8bitdo
but i've never used one of those digital sticks so i have no idea if i like them
The 8bitdo one?
Yes
i already have too many retro controllers i don't use
It'd be pointless if the stick wasn't clicky, lol
i admit i'm curious about it
but i can't really justify it, i already have an alright fightstick i should reassemble and go back to using
honestly i've never played arcade games ever
I like some arcade games
Itās not something Iām as familiar with as home consoles or handhelds
Its an 8way stick, canāt lock it to 4way, so itās a pass for me. Since Iām thick headed I bought it twice and returned it twice.. š«£
Isnāt the stick replaceable?
I think both the stick and the buttons are. But Iāve seen other arcade sticks that comes with a lock, so depending on the game you set it to 4 or 8 way d, out of the box.
But the Nintendo/Xbox button layout switch is a nice feature..
uses the same case as the 2023, I'll have to order one when the screen protectors come in
They changed the name to RGB30/RK2023: https://powkiddy.com/products/powkiddy-rk2023-bag-case
huh, are they really the same size?
i can't remember which video I saw recently, but yeah
oh, if it fits the 351v then the one i have around should work too
pretty damn similar
damn, never thought the rk2023 was so tall
RGB30 is 145 x 86.5 x 18mm
RK2023 is 151.5 x 78 x 17.5mm
interesting
so RGB30 is a little narrower and about 8.5mm taller
looks like it's barely wider than my q20
,I finally pulled the trigger on RK2023 in what, June? With a notion that's it for me for the gba-like size for a long time, good chip, nice display, size... A month ago rgb30 announced, same size, much better display š Damn. So can I expect there will be something even better in a month or will rgb30 be finally "it" š¤
there will always be something better soon
RGB30S will be here for Xmass
for 90 bucks i think this is a great deal right at launch
and the resell price on any portable emulator is always pretty good
so really, it doesn't matter much
I was pretty sure I wouldn't need anything after my 353p until a ~$200 device that can run all of PS2 came out... but here I am waiting for my RGB30 and eyeballing that 405v, lol
I remember there was someone thinking of removing the sticks on rgb30, I wouldnāt do this, the sticks are actually good and reachable for other systems, unless youāre a gb purist, donāt do this
Well actually might be almost
RGB30VS when?
i said the same after buying the 351v and have since bought a q90, q20, rg503, rg405v, rgb30 and rp3+ lmfao
oh and 35xx
i'll sell most of what i have after i receive this batch and see which i like the most
Christmas this year
i don't think a vertical version would work that well
with 4 inches square screen, it would be weirdly proportioned
I keep saying I'll sell one... but now iv'e got a 350, 353p, nano, 35xx, 2x A66, 2x TrimUI Smart, data frog, bittboy, a handful of various DS devices, just got my GB Micro...
I think where I live there is not much of a demand for these things, but we'll see, I am planning to decimate my collection a bit, I have too many...
35XX is still the most fun device I think, it's pretty much perfect (until the 35XX+ comes).
we have a pretty decent second hand app here in spain that deals with shipping and stuff too, so that makes it easier to sell nationwide
But the RGB30s screen is 100% the reason to buy it
yeah i don't think i'm selling the 35xx ever, just how convenient just powering it on and off is
haha, I also plan to buy just 1 device that can go up to PS2 and is not x86. Praying to Retroid gods now to not go much bigger with rp4 š
Rk2023 plastics are so cheap. Feel like that device is going to break just holding it.
Honestly, a 3566 device for everything PS1/N64 and below, then a 3588 device (or snapdragon8 gen2) for everything above that would probably be ideal. Anything beyond that is novelty (I love a small device)
That's the thing though. You can't test these other than buying, because you just can't knownif it will work for you.. But it's not that easy to sell them afterwards. God I wish there was a WoW like vendor where you could just drop anything for a good price without much effort š
...and a small one, and a vertical, and a pocketable one, and a clamshell one...
...and a square screen one...
Lol the same. I separate nintendo though, that is an investment, those I never regret. But chinese emulation production, that's a different story..
Square on a 3566 is just the most versatile choice I think. It's why I wanted the RPP so badly, haha.
yeah I enjoy my nintendo devices, i've got my modded GBA and GBC, then an original DS, DS Lite, 3DS XL, Micro, Switch, and then a Retron 2 for the kids, lol
i went the other way and sold all my proper nintendo stuff to go all in on emulators
here's where I point out that for almost every possible system integer scaled or not the MM+ usually gives you a bigger display area than the 3.1" RPP screen
even sold my full package pokemon soul silver
Just a feeling, to me the build seems solid, and I was happy to get it for like 65 because I don't mind having it in the backpack all the time. I wouldn't do the same with 300$ device..
if the RGB30 was out when I got my 353 I wouldn't have got the 353
the rgb30 however compared to the MM+ gives you a bigger screen for almost anything other than I think integer scaled MD/NeoGeo/other 320x224 systems
yes but 3588 or sd(in odin2) are quite big devices. I'd like to stay close to the gba size (aka rk2023/rgb30, maybe rp3+ ) but not switch size or weight I just can't play big/heavy...
at least I see that this boat is bigger than titanic š
a clamshell is what it would take for me to move up to an SD8g2 or 3588 I think
they'll probably go down in size, the first rk3566 was the rg503 which is pretty chunky
since a pocketable non-clam is not realistic
If it doesn't brother you. It feels very cheap to me.
you just basically named my collection except I keep also not modded pieces for the og feel...
all i have left is a ds lite i got for 20 bucks, and an r4 card
For me the og gameboys also fill a decorative purpose. I just like to look at those things from time to time... I can't imagine the same with RGB20s likes or RK š
I've been wanting to get an unmodded DMG and GBC, just haven't got around to it with so many emulators to get, lol
also want to get a DSI XL
I am eager to see whether the future is steamdeck/switch/odin size like and small handhelds will be forgotten, or we get new PocketGo but with a much better cheap chips in like 10years... Even now the level of what used to be FClones is almost up to gba (frog being even better example)
i think as long as people want a comfortable device, there will be deck sized stuff
Absolutely, it's very subjective and I can see how it can be a bother for you. It doesn't scream "premium" build quality, you're right, but at least is not creaky or hollow-like feel.. The black v2 actually looks and feels decent imo...
handhelds have been consistently going up in size
i am excited about what the 100-150 buck tier of handhelds will be in a few years if the hobby stays relevant
dob't even check trimui smart. But that thing is also good hw in contrast to q20m..
i just really hate the software experience
if it had something more like emulationstation and if i could just turn off the damn thing in a single step i wouldn't complain about it
apart from not having a pivot on the dpad, the hardware is pretty decent
I finished Super Mario Land on the unmodded DMG but it was a struggle to see what's going on on the display. But that's part of the genuine experience I like from time to time. I even have a worm light for color š
I can recommend 2ds XL. You hack it and can play almost all nintendo stuff before Switch...
The smart would have been great if the software wasn't so bad at launch... It's really a pretty ideal size for a pocket device, and a lot more durable and comfortable.
i've got a 3DS XL with cfw
Can't compare and I am not buying deck just to try how it feels š
maybe they fixed it with the v2. The day one rk2023 are horrible.
But I think past years have been unique in seeing like 1W chip (FC100s) which can do gba (V90, trimui, pocketgo...). I don't think we will ever see a 1W device but with power of e.g. 3566 in a very small device again...
probably not, but honestly for me those are a bit too small for me to use
i'm happy with the rg35xx's size, performance and price, i'm sure they can make it a bit better
now it's better with the official 116alpha. But what I meant, besides the smaller display it is just design wise very attractive and solid build. Q20 is nothing in comparison (even without turning it on). Thw white and rounded just feels so clean and not cheap-toy like..
so why specifically you want dsi xl?
Pretty much that, DS screens look better on it than on a 3DS.
and because I don't have it, lol
That I cannot say, I only have v2 and for that I wouldn't be embarrased to show to someone (except I got rid of the "Powkiddy" sticker frome the back and am very happy the name is not in front anymore because that just screamed cheap kids toy š)
i can imagine a weird parallel universe where powkiddy never stopped using the extremely ugly shiny powkiddy logo under the screen
it's a pretty dire universe
I see, but if you don't mind a bit smaller image (yet on larger XL screens) you can run in 1:1 pixels - I think you hold Select when starting the game from the DS cartridge, and it doesn't scale to fit..
I would pay more for a metal rgb30
I probably wouldnāt up front though, I needed to try the plastic one first
it doesn't look horrible, i hope it's not bad
It's funny how first reactions were mostly "wtf is this š©" but then it actually looks like a really good choice
i was instantly drawn to it, tbh, as well as the 405v
weird and good is a rare combination though, glad they seem to be coming out pretty good
seems the whole spec list works very well together, except the lack of touch
really happy that powkiddy is mostly releasing good devices now instead of cutting costs so much
the cost cutting is still there
I wish the chassis was using a better plastic material
i thought i would mind the cheap feeling plastic more than i actually do in practice tbh. but i only have the max 3
not sure if thats the same plastic they use on other things but i dont hate the feel
Max3 plastic is 100 times better than the rk2023
oh okay
If the Max3 gets a couple upgrades in software it could be great.
i'll wait for the max 3 pro ultra
That emote is pain
Watching todayās livestream made me impatient for mine to arrive. Wish they made one in clear black. Or clear purple.
Wood grain
looking at my 351v i'm gonna miss the transparent black a lot, but the huge anbernic logo really ruins the look of the whole thing
I really wanted transparent black, for some reason Anbernic has stopped making them on newer devices, no idea why
The plastic is a bit like RP2+ but the black does not pick up fingerprints as bad
Iām okay with it now as well, it does not bother me but leaves a bad first impression
Miyoo looooong
miyoo weenie
I think it would fall off my hand easily
That's the handheld I'm afraid to play in bed for fear of dropping
hrm, if I wait I might get a screen protector
if I wait I might be in line behind 10000000 RGC subs
lol there is that
Tbh if we extended the bottom to be equal in size to the screen, it would look better and be more ergonomic lol
I like the idea of just making the MM+ taller more lol
I wonder what doom looks like on this
An easier way to mock a RGB30V
the bottom part of the MM+ is already too short and cramped as is imo hah
Huh, doesn't look too big compared to rk2023, actually
This device is just what the RK2023 should have always been. Just a straight up upgrade in every way.
(Yes, including the screen - you get the same amount of 4:3 real estate but a higher pixel count)
I would buy it if the bottom part would be a little longer and had a dpad. It would be the miyoo mini+ xtra long
Instead of RGB30V I want a v30 š
Going live again with the RGB30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPzwKVkWmQ
we have analogue pocket at home
Poor man's Analogue pocket
Well, these donāt use carts at all.
Still looks better than any 4:3 vertical device. 4:3 on a gameboy will never feel right.
Beeg 280v
So much room for activities - they could put an arcade spinner and trackball
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPzwKVkWmQ
Shad0w59 is livestreaming again
My words, a v30
Thanks for tuning into the stream
the people's LG wing
you know, the only reason God of War runs like shit on any device like this is because the game engine cycles 180 times, while the fps cycles only 60 at max. there's a hack that makes it cycle only 60 or 30 times at the engine level, and makes it playable on rk3326
this is how distanced emulation gamers(and reviewers) are from the ppsspp forums. Like, you see it, chuckle, shrug, and hope one day people figure it out, and that never happens. It's a niche game, so 'eh whatever, nothing lost' until you see a reviewer go "God of War is LE UNPLAYABLE" for the 100th time. Okay, seriously. The cavemen seriously are just not bothering to figure it out. Okay, fine.
reviewers are using it specifically as an example of a difficult to emulate psp game so that you can compare framefrate to other devices
I get that.
using a speedhack that makes it easy to emulate would completely miss the point and they'd just switch to using a different unplayable game to make their point
like outrun2007
(also I would wager most users are not in the business of hunting down and installing per game hacks to make things run well)
for me I'll just play psp on a device that doesn't need per game fiddling like a t618 or right now for me the max 3
the mad thing is the rk3566 is actually stronger than the raspberry pi4 in its current form. it's the new everyman soc, so figuring out how to get everything (even motorstorm) running full speed on it is sort of a trial of passage
It would be nice if the YouTubers talked about that. I think are just in a rush to get the next handheld review out now. I appreciate all the work they do. But, these videos have become very copy and paste feeling to them now.
I'd give them a bit of slack, how many things can you honestly talk about with a lot of these handhelds
Especially since it's always first impression which means you can't really give a deep dive after months of testing
some reviewers like Emuchicken will go down the list and explain how to get things like Outrun 2006 running the fastest, but he's like one in a dozen.
his videos are also not children-friendly, so there's that.
I don't think that's true - isn't the rpi4 closer to a 3399 benchmark wise?
which is stronger than the 3566 but way less efficient tdp wise
i was testing a 4gb orangepi cm4 model versus a 2gb raspberry pi4 model yesterday in ppsspp, and the difference is really noticeable. There's just a whole lot more instruction lag and general lack of gpu power on the pi4's end.
that Videocore VI processor is a weird sort of emulated gpu. its graphics efficiency depends entirely on the who writes its translation drivers
I like the craziness of a live stream, opening and setting it. Unfortunately that format has change a little also.
people get a lot of luck out of overclocking the raspberry pi4.
in lakka, you can basically go into a bios text file and set the voltage/cpu/gpu to 15/2325/950 on the clocks with forced turbo. you can also manually set the gpu memory. It's just... not an average user scenario though.
yeah I mean that kinda OC is also something you probably wouldn't want to do in a handheld regardless due to thermal and battery concerns
mmmm... toasty palms
but when you have an rpi4 swimming in a massive DIY arcade cab hooked to mains its nbd
I wonder how much overclocking the rk3566 can stand now
now that 3566 SBCs are readily available you'll probably see more people testing that
but I don't see any interest in doing that on a handheld
makes sense.
RGB30 really can't ship fast enough, lol
Can this thing emulate those sega arcades (naomi?) I think there's tons of shmups in those
are they shipping now?
those run in a dreamcast emulator don't they? Might be kinda hit and miss
I thiink they do
mine shipped last week
I was gonna ask if it runs dreamcast perfectly instead but I realized those arent vertical lol
so it'd have to be the naomi ones
mine shipped, it's apparently in an airplane at the moment
dc/naomi/atomiswave are all decent on 3566. most 2d games for those ive tried work well, you should be able to play a lot of the vertical shmups
also not a shmup but the arcade version of Monkey Ball for Naomi runs lol. tho that is a little unstable
Does Ikaruga run? idk sh*t about dreamcast emulation ngl just realized recently I enjoy shmups cause of othe 35xx lol
yeah
this, acting offended that someone says "it can't run game x" while they could have spent 13 hours getting that game to run instead which none of their viewers will do is uhhhhh a special take
it really does look like the perfect pico8 console
now heres the question.... can it run official pico8?
With JelOS and ARKOS yeah
nice
then yea this basically is the goto if you wanted a dedicated machine for it id imagine
I'll probably buy the official Pico8 with this
I wish you could rig Ark/JelOS to run Pico-8 just like, on startup
also the one caveat is that some pico-8 games need mouse
Ah
Would be nice if one day we had official support on Android...
I know we have fake 08 but yea
Splore OP
I forgot I bought this - so I own pico-8!!
Yup
Oh my god thank you for this, I didnāt even realize
I was so close to buying pico 8 again lol
Wouldāve done it ages ago if the MM+ hadnāt replaced my 353VS as my every day pocket handheld
I failed
I think finding out I already own pico-8 probably has eroded the last of my willpower here
so, black?
Iām torn between black and max 3 blue but I think the black will hide bezels better which is probably pretty important given the huge range of weird res systems Iāll be emulating on it
Man... Not to be mean but everyone goes for black
Be a rebel and get blue, it's far more interesting
It's not like I'm heavily invested in what you do but, idk man...
Isn't black boring?
I already have a blue max 3 and I canāt decide if them matching would be a pro or a con
If they offered this in beige that wouldāve been a no brainer
only one left on ali is blue lol
how does the blue look
They're actually selling out? Damn.
I'm going for blue so I'm glad that's the least popular (or most produced) at least
I like it
Iām worried this one might be a different plastic formulation (heard mixed things about that) which could lead to the two blue devices not quite matching
could be that its the only color on ali too
True, though the white and black were definitely available for purchase there on the 31st
they might've pulled them since for some reason
Probably just actually selling a lot
So far reception of this device has been really good
white wasnāt available when I ordered last week
so the colors are going in and out of stock
just added some timestamps to my RGB30 stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOPzwKVkWmQ
this is a great device for pico8
Someone fixed the bottom part
your bottom one is just this lol
which I did as a joke
Yeah, just with some rgb30 vibes
but yeah honestly I don't think the systems I want to emulate on this require sticks at all
so I'd be down for the vertical as long as the shoulders look like your mockup and don't ruin the device sitting flat in my pocket
@idle sonnet @forest kite I think you guys were right all along for Snes
aspect Core provided
integer scale on
integer overscale on
thatās it
yeah, should work for any 256 x [anything 224-240] system which off the top of my head is NES/SNES/PC Engine or Turbografx-16
Similar to this, looks great. You'll still have a little bit of black bars. However its worth it for the crisp integer scaling, much better than 4:3 on this screen
on turbografx 16 and NES you don't even get black bars
need to bother the jelos devs for an integer overscale toggle
or save a core override
I've actually been meaning to learn to use a compiler again (haven't used one since like 2005) and build jelos from source to hopefully be able to add that exact feature - I figure even for a dum dum like me looking at how ES toggles generate RA config files and adding one more option can't be too too hard right?
but yeah if someone more competent beat me to it I would not be upset
I think given how many per game and per core RA overrides, custom aspect ratios etc I'm gonna want on this thing arkOS is probably a more suitable CFW as a system that leaves more of that kinda thing to RA directly
but we'll see
as of right now arkOS doesn't support this (yet)
that's quite odd
so in this I have to input 768x720 manually
or I get black bars just letting it go integer overscale
is there any option for mouse control with joysticks?
This table might be helpful, although it only uses integer scaling https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n60netUozRP8tDVTzMXORsa8BSzfBiLsUHkBffeDAT4/edit#gid=0

Best handheld screen resolution for retro gaming
This spreadsheet will help you find the screen resolution that suits your retro gaming needs the best. It shows the percentages of the screen occupied by the game, given that integer scaling is turned on.
Make a copy of the spreadsheet if ...
I'm a bit confused here because I think different games can use different modes e.g. on SNES and Genesis, but maybe render resolution != output resolution (e.g. the game just has black bars in certain cases by design)
I'm still on the fence but the possibility of a native 720x720 Apotris is
I mean, Apotris is a GBA game though, no? So 3:2
he already experimented a bit getting to run (albeit slowly) on a miyoo mini #926552349609164872 message
no GBA resolution restrictions
Oh, wow, I only knew about Apotris as a GBA game, my bad š
uhhh how do I buy it, I don't get that site lol
just a tip:
add a 00:00 timestamp so that they show up on the video timeline
wym fixed, the top one looks much better lol

thanks for tuning in
very helpful streams, thank you!
Seems like they ran out of stock? I ordered a white on Ali but I asked to switch to black. They said they only had blue in stock so sent me that
I guess it must be a popular device
they probably had no idea whether this was going to take off or not
I wasn't really interested until I saw Taki's review, it just looked so cool to play gbc
Also made me interested to try Pico 8
i was instantly interested, and then thought of possible uses for it lmao
I was instantly interested because I already have messed with a square screen a bit (q36)
NES integer scaled with a light crop is a square system and that's what immediately made me want to buy this
just waiting for powkiddy to add a screen protector since I intend to throw this in my jeans pocket
i'll put it in my 351v case and sell the 351v
I hope they sell a case for it. Dunno where to store it without that
Are the joy sticks joycon ones?
They do sell a case that fits either it or an rk2023
So probably not an amazing fit
The sticks do appear to be switch sticks
leaked video from powkiddy parts sourcing dept.
Lol, wasnāt that where MM screens came from?
The RGB30 I think is using a 720x720 display that keeps getting included in rpi embedded screen kits
No clue if that was its original purpose
ah I thought it was this but looked up the spec and itās only 3.5ā 720x720
Yeah the exact panel they used is already supported in the mainline Linux kernel which is super cool
This device should be able to go mainline with the other 3566 devices despite being that much newer
Has the arkos dev said if they'll support this?
yeah its small enough for arkos lol
And rockchip enough
must...resist
why tho
I asked them for an ETA on an rgb30 screen protector š¦
at this point do I wait or just use the device without one
(I haven't ordered an rgb30 yet)
maybe I just switch back to my 353VS for a while (MM+ being a bit weak has been pissing me off lately) and see if I can get over the lumpyness in my pocket
imo just use the device without one and maybe grab the screen protector later. To me a screen protector isn't a huge deal to begin with, and Powkiddy doesnt charge shipping anyways, so it's not like you need to combine the screen protector and the device in the same order to save money
its just a matter of the screen protector becoming more or less worthless if I scratch the screen before it gets here
I get the fear but... when is the last time you've actually scratched a screen? in my experience it just doesn't happen with my handhelds
yeah, it's one of those things where I don't know if I really need it until I scratch something so maybe I don't need screen protectors on any of these things
so someday I'll have to carry a device aroundin my pocket without one and see if it gets scuffed
may as well be this one I guess
I'm just going to get one made at the mall, it won't be as good as a glass one, but it'll be fine for now
Worse case scenario you could always just wrap it in a microfiber cloth before tossing it in your pocket, but I don't think it should be an issue unless you're tossing it with your keys or something
Oh, that's true. Could also just buy a bigger one and the cut off the part you don't need I guess
I think you are fine without one pope
Or one from the mall should be more than enough i think
yeah, I normally do put devices in my jeans pocket but only by themselves
ok order placed, the wait begins
went with black
Yay nice
wild to think it was a decent chunk cheaper including shipping from china than buying starfield premium as a digital download
Yeah thats wild
I feel like my lesson from this year is that modern gaming is not worth it - upgraded my PC for the cost of like 10 retro handhelds, bought 3 triple A games at the cost of one retro handheld each, spent more time playing on my MM+ in the last four months than on my desktop.
um
Iād be more worried about marking the plastics
when I got mine, I could see marks from the testers inserting a hdmi cable
I never inserted a hdmi cable and there were already marks near the port
Retroid is literally harvesting old iPhone screens lol
what's the +/- for each of JelOS and ArkOS?
just use it without one tbh
you can try it with one of the devices you already have but don't care as much about
Starfield costs $88 here for the base edition, not even the premium one š
would have translated to $95 just a couple of days ago but our currency became even more worthless again, yaaaaay
(this is not a good thing for us
)
I'd take Rgb30-like with 3,5" 720x720 any day, still large enough screen but more pocket friendly...
Why not to buy a plastic (folie) for something bigger and just cut it down. It's a good temp solution, and you don't have to stress about when is the tempered glass coming out..
I never ever used any glass protector on any of my phones or handhelds
At what point does this device stop being a rumor? š
When it gets three different cfw options and custom buttons from Sakura modding I guess
I just realised pico8 splore works perfectly in jelos
I'm new to pico8, it's great how you can play games as soon as they are posted there
no need to take the sd card out etc.
Super clever the way the game is hidden in a .png so your box art is your game and vice versa too
i never tried pico8, but i guess i'll check it out with this thing
you can play some for free with fake08 right? to see what i'm getting into
Yes
A lot of thing work with fake 8
There was a bundle for racial injustice and it did contain pico8. Most people have it by accident š
Yeah finding out I already own real pico 8 was the final push to get me to stop procrastinating and order this
arkos has an easy way to set retroarch to automatically boot instead of emulationstation (graphical launcher) - if you don't care so much about boxart etc. and you just want to go directly to a list of games - I think this is quite nice
you can probably achieve the same in jelos by editing the scripts but I like how it was done in arkos
oh you finally did? hell yeah
In general if you want to do more setup per system etc in RA you want arkOS, if you want ES menus to handle RA setup for you then jelos
Does JelOS not allow RA backend access or override these changes?
you can do most of the RA changes in JELOS from ES
shaders/etc
It does
I kinda never understood why "ArkOS allows tinkering with RA" was a plus, because I'm pretty sure any RA-based firmware allows you to do that
ArkOS just doesn't expose as many RA settings in ES
I do prefer to change everything in RA myself because I know RA, but I do think that dedicated menus are a better design
Except GarlisOS, which overrides several RA settings and doesn't allow you to tweak them at all (:
I hated that OS so much lol
Realistically I think ArkOS should be a bit more stable simply because it doesn't have the kind of a rolling release model that JELOS has
I mean you can tweak them. But launch a game and they're back to stock.
Like on my 351MP I had JELOS break things that didn't really have anything to do with the features the release would bring
JELOS on the other hand can bring out a new version just to bump up a version of RA/some other component which usually doesn't bring much for what RK3326/RK3566 devices emulate
More of a developer-centric approach where tinkekers need to keep as close to upstream as possible
thatās the motto lol
Also on 353 devices I think ArkOS would bring device-specific features (bluetooth, for example) earlier than JELOS because that is not really the point of that firmware
But probably not relevant for RGB30, because the SoC isn't as new anymore
No NES video gameplay ?
Canāt wait to see the overlays and aspect ratio setups for this guy
I might start working on a GBA bezel
leaning towards having a small bezel on top and larger on bottom rather than equal or all on bottom
I'd use that bezel if you made it
There may be another one that already works but Iāll investigate in about two weeks when I have mine
But yeah gba is something I definitely want to get as ārightā as possible on this despite the large aspect ratio mismatch because as long as you can make that not look terrible itāll integer scale and be no smaller than it is on 640x480 3.5ā screens without integer scaling
Yeah the only "issue" is bezels
and dead space
once you ignore that the picture looks really good, very versatile
Picturing something kinda like this but obviously cropped at the screen edges since there will be no horizontal bezel for GBA on this
Where you get the bit of curved black top and buttoom with hints of colour in the corners
Might replace the Nintendo and GBA text/logos with something cheeky
fat gba isn't real, it can't hurt you
It would be ultra lanky gba in this case
My RGB30 is in Illinois so I guess I might need to flash it out of the box
Youāll want to anyway because PK is still cloning instead of flashing and getting the nag screen slow boot
Ah wonderful
Roughly 99% certain I'm going to cave and finally order this tomorrow.
I can hold on I'll give it till 11/11 sale lol, still not convinced by dreamcast performance tho...
I would not buy a 3566 for DC personally
some stuff will work, some won't, some will work with an asterisk
the 720x720 res is also not an asset for DC
which is a 640x480 system
so that would be 5x? 640x640
Agreed, it's super disappointing, same with N64.
You need a T-series(610/618), or an A311D for perfect DC/N64.
There seems to be a new blue model.
There's always been a blue model š
Ah okay I only checked their ali store and only saw b&w a couple of days ago
This is the only thing stopping me from buying this tbh
I'm super hyped buuuuut it only plays the same systems that my 35xx already does, whereas saving up for 405M would get me a DC/N64/Saturn device
I mean the 3566 would play more dc/n64/psp/saturn/arcade stuff than your 35xx (and be able to use shaders, upscaling, and better fast forward) but yeah itās not enough of an improvement to give you an extra gen of systems tweak free like an amlogic a311d or t61x would
got my own video coming but russ beat me to it
The PowKiddy RGB30 is a surprising device. With a 4-inch, 1:1 (square) aspect ratio and 720x720 resolution, it scales a number of retro systems extremely well, making it a real contender for classic systems. It's quickly becoming my favorite device for many systems: GB/GBC, NES, SNES, GBA, Pico-8, and vertical arcade games.
Buy one here:
Po...
Why is loose diagonal dpad input so epidemic
eh, just deal with it or build a phone+controller
its tough becauase if you make a dpad that will beat the contra test it'll be not great for street fighter special moves
but yeah I'll probably tape mod this guy
a bit of kapton tape to partially cover the contacts is all you need to do to make a dpad less diagonal prone
I've been meaning to tape mod my 353VS and max 3 as well
But this one looks way too loose. I guess good thing is that the the rgb30 would be not too hard to tear down. I had so much pain modding the dpad on my 353p.
wow. I'm only halfway through and he's already favourably compared the rgb30 to multiple devices that cost 2-3x as much
he says DS doesn't have touchscreen input, despite Drastic letting you use the right stick and R3 as a mouse and screentap
just got to another device he's comparing to the rgb30 and the rgb30 wins lol
despite the other device costing twice the price
They really struck gold with this screen huh
yeah, minimum brightness maybe not the best for playing in bed and a bit of light bleed (also only a problem if you're playing in a dark room) as the main complaints sounds reasonable to me
