#Anbernic RG556
1 messages Ā· Page 2 of 1
Android or Linux?
If itās mediatek itāll be android
Thank you.
I really prefere Linux though.
Iām torn - I donāt love using stand-alone emulators on arm Linux handhelds with no desktop or anything (emulation station firmwares or similar) but I do prefer Linux for retroarch focused low end devices like the 3566 or lower, and I do prefer full Linux distros on x86 to android too. Just that mid tier itās hard to beat Android right now as a result of emulators available and graphics drivers
Maybe the 3588 handhelds will finally give us the ability to run full desktop Linux distros on ARM handhelds
You'll be waiting for 3588 chip to come to devices as they can support linux and Android
#1103790234451324928 is supposed to have that chip
Aged like fine wine
True, no one is quite as good as Powkiddy. :)))
Probably made it ugly, but what if it had Xbox Design Lab options to customized
very interesting design for this and specs for this
I mean it's basically the ayaneo design philosophy, slap all the buttons at the bottom so theyre as uncomfortable to reach for as possible and take up space where the speaker should be, then put the speakers down firing. It's just a cheaper lower quality ayaneo
At least the controls are v-shaped though, credit where credit is due
Aya can't even figure that one out
i think aya is just powkiddy with more money at this point
release 50 devices and see what sticks
Thatās not a fair comparison - powkiddy has some of them stick like the RGB30
Ayaneo had rich Dad??? Uncle???
Is there a future for G99 now?
if it becomes feasible for 120 buck devices, sure
With what's on the market these days, I wouldn't want to touch a G99 device unless it's at £100 ish, or if its a KT-R1 priced at or under £130/£140
G99 in the #1168252795783225424 at roughly t618 prices
Wait what, I had no idea the unicorn was getting a T618, I assumed it's a rgb30 clone with same guts
The Unicorn is a G99
Should I wait for this and just ignore the noise about the rp4 that reviews are getting today
yes
if anbernic do the cardinal snapping sticks again i'm not buying a ps2 capable handheld from them
Im not sure I would want to deal with their android lol
@ gamma
i'll probably wait until they make a 406
and if they fix the damn sticks or no chance i'll buy anything
I will only buy one new.
tbh i have no interest rp4 or 506/556
only in 406
odin 2 kinda killed my desire for any of them for now
i specifically need "The ONE 4:3"
maybe the 406 for that screen
yeah this is an awkward point
i also need to kinda decide what device i will play N64 on š
doesnt feel right on any of the 16:9 ones and feels awkward on both RG405v or RGB30
I feel like that's going to be most people these days. Definitely me. A company should focus on making the perfect 4:3 device now. No one wants their larger screen 16:9 devices anymore lol
Well I want perfect 4:3 and fun form factor budget things.
If they'd just made a plastic 405 I would have been set for my devices, but noooo
I want the phat rg505v with d1200.
I wonder if the new Ayn/Retroid sticks will dethrone the Switch sticks as the default handheld sticks.
Having an Odin 2 has killed any serious interest in new handhelds for a billion reasons, and the sticks is a big part of that.
i still want the endagem 4:3 one even with odin 2 š
its just doesnt feel ideal on wide screen with blackbars/overlay
dpad where?
up top š¤·š»āāļø
When that happens we won't need anymore handhelds. We will have perfection and these companies will really have to dig deep to further sales haha
More weird formfactors
Like do n64/gc layout one, tate mode one,one with neogeo cklicky stick,....
Successor to old weirdos (A13, Model S , funk ey M)
You know anbernic is doing n64 next. Hopefully it isn't like the arc and can emulate what it's modeled after š
Pls
Why not Clambernic? Too few clamshell devices on the market š
Well I'm hoping. Should be announced next week the way they are going.
Honestly, for clamshells I wouldn't even be mad
It's just something about the form factor that makes them really appealing
if the RG556 has switch style sticks they are shooting themselves in the foot imo
With the 2s, odin 2, rp4, the standard has definitely risen for controls
hoho no rubber grip pads, lovely
So is the 556 that one Baterang looking handheld?
so are we getting the rg556 pro after this
I can tolerate this soc if it has a 5:3 screen.
Not a fan of the horns... hope it changes for the better on the engineering units and production.
But yeah - doesn't seem like much of an upgrade when compared to the d1100
Oh dear lord here comes the oversharpening again then
#where406
Interesting, gadgetversus lists this chip as 5W, but I can't find any other source to confirm https://gadgetversus.com/processor/unisoc-tiger-t820-vs-mediatek-mt6891z-dimensity-1100/
So if true, this could be passively cooled, I guess
Comparison between Unisoc Tiger T820 and MediaTek MT6891Z Dimensity 1100 with the specifications of the processors, the number of cores, threads, cache memory, also the performance in benchmark platforms such as Geekbench, Passmark, Cinebench or AnTuTu.
is it like, between d900 and d1100 in power?
Same as aya Neo pocket air. Itās stronger than the 1100
its comparable to d900
Comparison between Unisoc Tiger T820 and MediaTek MT6877V/ZA Dimensity 900 with the specifications of the processors, the number of cores, threads, cache memory, also the performance in benchmark platforms such as Geekbench, Passmark, Cinebench or AnTuTu.
Oh wait I though we were talking about the 1200 lol
Damn, I thought I caught up. I missed the whole first half of this convo lmao
so rp4 tier, playable n64, psp, gamecube, wii, decent ps2, some switch
not bad if it's passively cooled, and a bit cheaper than rp4 non pro
price is not announced yet iirc
Itāll have to be cheaper if it uses switch sticks and the usual anbernic dpad vs the retroid controls
yeah i'm definitely not buying any ps2 capable anbernic handheld until they get better sticks and actually calibrate them to not be 8 way d pads
Is there a reason people think this will use switch sticks? I mean, the entire xx5 series uses Hall effect sticks, even 405V
I don't really care what sticks they put in it, would be convenient to come with hall, but they are easy to replace and you can buy a set from retroid for like 10 bucks
I wish. We don't need more 16:9 devices. We need another 4 in 4:3 š
in plastic
those are still switch sticks though
at least when i say switch sticks, i mean any sticks that pivot but don't shift around
You're saying that you want sliders?
no, i'm saying i want rp2s sticks at least
Yeah, but I think "sticks that pivot but don't shift around" describe every device I have (xbox controllers, 8bitdo, dualshocks, etc)
Unless I'm missing something
basically, left is a switch stick and right is a normal stick from like an xbox controller or deck
switch stick's "ball" is so tiny the stick mostly just "pivots" around the center, while on normal sticks it feels more like it's moving around the "ball" than rotating
rp2s sticks are like an in between
Butt plug
I want any device with the retroid flip sliders. Honestly weren't that bad for a super pocketable device. Would be great on another clam
Was my first thought as well. Just wasn't gonna go there haha
I goes in
all in!
Appreciate the explanation! So is there a more mainstream device (like a first party console) that uses sticks like that?
well, any pc handheld except for the win600, and the ones on the rp2s and the odin 2 are an inbetween as i said
Hmm, figured those Geekbench scores might not be fair to compare (early software/engineering prototype/yadayada), so found the only smartphone that uses T820 ā the ZTE Nubia Neo 5G aka Nubia N8150N
Welp, the difference is single digits
T820 was the only chip with the same architecture from unisoc that I could find
Those processor ID and motherboard ID are identical for RG556 and the ZTE phone, so I think it is indeed the T820
Question is, whether they can get such a new SOC for cheap
Then again, if after a whole year there is only one smartphone with T820, maybe Unisoc has a huge surplus of those, I guess?
Those were my thoughts, it doesn't seem very popular
Power really seems to be similar to the d900
Unisoc drivers are probably worse though
Worse than mediatek?
That's just my guess, it feels like Mediatek processors are becoming more wildly used and popular
Unisoc has had success with tablets, but for phones Mediatek has a huge lead afaik
I'm working on the kt-r1 which is mediatek
It's more limiting to work with if you don't have sources
E.g display refresh rates etc
Found this (ZTE Nubia Neo 5G uses the Unisoc T820)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ckgye6YKyc
1x resolution, locked to 30FPS, no idea if it's Vulkan. Seems to dip a lot
Meanwhile, looks like RP4Pro can handle the PAL version at 2x

š Join me as we take a look at the latest from @retroidpocket3773, the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. This is a special video and really serves as an early look at the handheld before the full in-depth review that will come at a later time. However, there's plenty to explore here as we go over a few things new with the Pocket 4 Pro, even some benchmarks,...
That dude only tested two other games and I'm not familiar with them

Can't say I disagree (although I'd put software third or second), but the timing makes it sound like a cope lol
Translation:
Handheld Design Principles:
Screen comes first (after all, a handheld is all about the screen)
Feel comes second (it wouldn't be a handheld without a good feel)
Performance comes third (if you want performance, go play with a smartphone)
Curious that the Chinese symbols for numerals are just a corresponding number of lines, I like how that paragraph looks
What's the fourth would be like?
å
Oh yeah, that breaks the pattern all right š
screen comes first yet we haven't seen a high res screen from Anbernic since the rg552 a million billion years ago
Yeah, and those are the same people who said that light bleeding issues on the Arc are "normal"
Man with that performance 5.5 inch screen is disappointing
I mean, my focus is PSP, and I wanted an OLED handheld for a long time, so this is still kinda appealing to me
But I suspect they're not going to make this too cheap, so they better have some kind of a redeeming quality to make up for lack of performance
Like if it does end up being passively cooled (which is a big if)
(if you want performance, go play with a smartphone)
bruh my smartphone is RP3+/505 tier lol
maybe just above it
So, I've been watching Taki's review of RP4 and noticed that the RP4 Geekbench scores most have been using to compare with RG556 are from the "high performance" mode (the fastest one) while we have no idea which mode is used on RG556
Here's the comparison with RP4 Pro at standard mode
Now, the GPU is still going to be weaker either way, the Vulkan scores are half of even the lowest score for RP4 Pro
D1100 will have faster single core itās a78 vs a76
Something like the t820(could be t760) is better compared to the d900 than d1100
what does 6000 series have to do with 556
Ok?
X86 chips/devices are a different market than the android/arm ones
The max2 is a whole laptop
what if someone is looking for a small handheld
Okay?
Odin 2?
Oh you mean the unreleased thing
I am very skeptical of this claim until I see real world stuff
Itās really irrelevant numbers aside from maybe o2
U could make that argument as for $100 more u can get an 8g2 device
X elite really isnāt meant for this side of the market the tdp is a bit higher for something like this. In regards to the rp4 yeah I wish it had snap dragon. Speaking from a personal experience d1200 vs 3050e emulation is a bit a of toss up (in the emulation systems they share) d1200 upscaled further not that the 506 is seemingly using that chip it looks like a t760 to me
And what about power consumption and watt2performance compared to m1 and m2 (if both is powered by battery)?
Size becomes the issue at that point Odin 2 for example is 8000mah or 30wh even the aya neo kun which is a big device is only 75wh.
credit: user @abstract hatch
So February-March
I mean, the Geekbench scores say it's RG556
the rumor was 506 cause they usually have a 5 inch screen, but the one they showed was 5,5 inch
so it will be 556 unless they change screen or design
Unless it's another elaborate joke from Max, of course
it would be cool if it had the 5.5 inch from the rg552
and not a cheaper one like powkiddy
Would be cool if they could tell you the TDP of T820
it was 5w apparently, so maybe no need for a fan
I mean, I only saw that number in Gadgetversus, but they also list 10W for lesser T7xx series chips
But I haven't found anything from Unisoc
Would be cool if it were fanless
from the pics around, there are fan exhausts but no intakes, it's kinda confusing
Yeah, I noticed that too
But then again, RP Flip and Switch Lite are also that way, and both have a fan
true, i was just thinking about the ones i have
Very similar configurations
A handheld with a Snapdragon would always be android, or can it also use Linux?
Oh nice. I really want a handheld that could run Sega Saturn beetle core, 4:3 screen and custom firmware like Onion OS / Garlick OS
So I"ll be waiting
Thank you for the reply.
Powkiddy is often open source, but Anbernic and Retroid are more locked? Would the Anbernic rg506 most likely be locked?
Not sure if I got it right.
Alright, a shame then. I'll patreon support Black-Seraph. But sounds like a lot of work for them.
I think in the case of Unisoc/Mediatek it won't matter who makes the device, there are no public sources either way
Could be wrong though
Thank you everyone for always being helpful. Have a nice day.
so basically an odin lite
Slightly better since it uses 4x a76
it gets better points but only by around 10%
i hope they can get this out for under 150
True. But thatās info we donāt have right now
Except a few t820 phones out there
I think the big issue is not really the CPU cores, but that Mali G57 GPU
I mean, the RP4 scores in that table are from the performance mode where you're forced to use active cooling. I think the RP4 reviews we've seen mostly show the device in standard mode
But the GPU scores for T820 are literally half that of D1100
Considering AetherSX2 was abandoned before Android devs started working on Mali GPUs, I think you do need raw power there
Not sure about GC performance
Errmm, as in "I'm Spartacus"? lol
Is confirmed t820 or is it the the lower binned t760
The 2.2ghz matches the lower binned variant
I mean, Anbernic hasn't confirmed anything. But the details in Geekbench scores match the info for that ZTE phone with T820
There is one core are 2.7gjx
GHz
So it seems t820
Didnāt see that I thought the other 3 were also higher but unisocās website is confusing
t820 should be near perfect gamecube, 3ds, wii and decent ps2 right?
Iām only using 3rd party websites for info
Not perfect gc itās like 845ish
Hahah
I donāt blame u because man shifting through their marketing and them not listing which cores are what speed was annoying
š
Also to add a bit Odin lite is more like somewhere in the 900s for single core and 2.4k for multi
I only found one result for Odin lite
Can you share a better one?
Just pulling from my unit
Be home in 15-20 minutes Iāll ping u when I drop the ss
@abstract hatch
Yeah it shares the same performance cores but less of them and less clock speed as rp4p and pocket air.
Good luck, Max
(also browsing Baidu for shitposts about handhelds is definitely one of my favorite pastimes now)
There's way too much homoeroticism in here until you remember that ZPG in Chinese sounds like "Zhang's ass" (as someone explained here previously)
The butthole must be destroyed
Indeed
Wonder if my wife would be mad if I try that
Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, I guess?
Who is zhang?
Isn't that the guy who's doing modded handhelds
that will release a g99 this year

He's the guy behind GKD devices, the LG Wing and the ZPG A1 Unicorn
I lack context but the energy is funny š
Max Zhou (not sure what's his non-Westernized name), head of Anbernic
I see. So anbernic guy wants to f*ck Zhang
Iām curious if they are keeping the oled side of this wasnāt it supposed to come with one
He also said d1200 oled
And it ended up t820
Unless thats another handheld
Iām actually excited to see t820 hopefully itās around 150ish
Yeah, I'm thinking of finally buying an Android handheld this year. Mostly for PSP, light PS2 and streaming from my Xbox
The shape of this, the asymmetrical sticks and the OLED screen definitely sound appealing for streaming
Lets see...
yeah oled is restricted to pocket air nowadays
Yeah, that, or the ancient Vita screens on RG503/505
should be pOled
Painful Oled
Didn't even know you could do voice messages on Discord
I mean, makes sense for what used to be a teamspeak app, but it's the first time I see these
Yeah, one should never buy from the first batch
I broke that rule with RG Arc (really wanted that device), got kinda burnt by the mild lightbleeding issues
This guy came in here hard slamming these handhelds.
However, by the time Anbernic releases the 556 I suppose Retroid will launch RP4Pro on AliExpress and hopefully fix the screen/triggers issues, so I might just get that instead
Rp4 pro?
Oh, right
The screen calibration was fixed it looks like.
Have they confirmed the chip in this? I've seen different information.
I saw mtk1200 then someone said a unisoc chip?
Oh t820
Yeah, but I think the concern wasn't whether it can be fixed, but whether the fix would come at a cost of reduced brightness/etc
I think it was just a color calibration thing which happens but I'm sure they will test that once all the reviewers get the fix
Zhang-bang
my eyes hurt
Should have expected that. Kyriu doesn't seem interested in romance with the women he meets in all other yakuza
Nah. Just a big yakuza fan
Gae honor punch 4 orphans
Nani
Oh that guy get banned? Lol
Oh why did all your text and messages disappear?
I'm not listening to those but ok.
āļø
if this is the 552 screen that gives it a big niche
if it's a 1080p 16:9 oled that's cool too
720p would be disappointing
The harrassment on baidu is funny, and Max loves to troll.
Can't really trust what he says
It is comforting to see chinese make fun of the software issues with anbernic, asking where the source code is.
And that it's the job of the customers to write the software for them
forget about pocket fit, Make this with 3:2 screen + Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 + 10000 Mah battery please
i don't like handhelds shaped so much like a controller
Yes 4:3 should be with similar design principles, I hate box handheld
Think about Ergonomics for once
406
Aaaand there goes my hope of it being passively cooled
can already hear the whine
'EEEEEeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee'
it'll probably/hopefully not need the fan for 95% of what it'll run anyway
tf is he on
Baidu I think
Max posted drawings of a 1:1 version.
I wonder if that one will be t820 too
would be more powerful than the g99 in the ZPG A1
probably more expensive too
I'm just not a fan of the horns... and it looks even worse on the 1:1 version
I kinda like the design
I'd be willing to go with anbernic on the 1:1 RGB30 upgrade device if they go t610/t618 and cheap
dunno if I'd be willing to pay extra for their t820
I actually like the horns
There's no chance this device will be compact anyways, and it's nice to have some extra support to play the sticks
seems pretty comfy to me yeah
for me this tier is kinda in no man's land now though unless they can release it at a surprising price
yeah it feels like anything well valued will completely obsolete every t618 handheld ever
but if it is significantly more than those t618 handhelds then you're in 'why not rp4pro?' territory
Or just the RP4
š¤£š
straight men are the gayest people on earth
(not that there's anything wrong with that)
If you don't kiss the homies on the mouth, they ain't your homies
Surprisingly deep and insightful
So that means that gay men are less gay than straight men?
Yes
That would also mean that gay men are the straightest men on earth, I guess
We need a new Anbernic leak right about now
G99 bottom
Anbernic should use the Kirin chipset
If Anbernic used the Kirin chipset it would save costs and improve quality for the $200 RP4pro or in Anbernic RG series etc
t820 is compared to 6100 series in various places online??
However, Both utilized for gaming and for emulation gaming past ps1 requires more power in regards to cpu/gpu
Mobile gaming and emulation gaming are two different things
Ps2 Emulation + requires huge cpu/gpu at the end of the day - Ps2, PS3, GameCube, Xbox etc are complex systems- Thatās all
Iām still testing and pushing the limits with rg505 and Aethersx2 gaming with Killzone for Ps2 running tests
Pushing and maxing out limit t618
Just be cautious before jumping in and buying etc
Thatās my point
But even if I have a t820 or D1100, 1200 still wonāt be enough for Killzone due to lack emulation hardware acceleration and rendering etc with Ps2 Emulation in a RG or RP4 Pro etc
looking at chart RK3588s with JELOS with 3:2 screen match made in "RetroLand"
Nice
Device and price??
Powkiddy?
I assume that was their dream
We still don't have a single RK3588 device on the market
How pong was it since the first rk3588 SBC/router on the market? 2 years?
It's getting ridiculous
Well, a year, really
I think the first affordable (like sub $100) RK3588 SBC was from Orange Pi and those came in December'22. Then came all the others
Hmmm maybe? Though it was longer than that
Like, rk3566
First handheld - rg503 in March 22
First device - 2021?
Yeah, the SBCs/TV boxes with RK3566 started to appear in 2021
Yeah, Orange Pi 5 came out in November 22
https://www.cnx-software.com/2022/11/11/orange-pi-5-most-affordable-rockchip-rk3588s-sbc/
Feels like Intel's N100 kinda killed any interest for RK3588 for emulation on TVs, tbh ā so that could explain why software development isn't too fast
I mean, people have been buying used miniPCs for Batocera for a while ā but with N100 you can actually just get a ~$150-ish miniPC new and not worry about drivers and stuff
Rumor - T80 handheld but fugly
There is an article on it by retro gamers etc
But itās fugly
Or did it launch and flop?
it didnt launch
yet
Check out their t101 model. Dumpster fire on igg.
If only it was with 5 inch around 4:3. with 8 inch they went too far. Also controls seems cheap.
Anbernic should collab with Gulikit or GameSir
Gameforce ACE is currently planning on shipping late this month. From a lesser known company which is maybe why it doesn't get much attention but on paper looks pretty good.
They need to start shipping the T101's before the T80 can go on IGG.
Their only product so far looks more like a scam by the day.
Iāll check it out
it was fun reading up on this thread
Another 16:9 device that plays games every other device already does. š Where's the 4:3 devices at. š
if it uses the same screen as the rg552, then I think it'll be fine
it's a 5:3 screen that does well with integer scaling for a lot of systems
people were always wishing for the 552 screen to come to better handhelds
That's true. I haven't gotten the 552 although always tempted. I'd consider this if it had that panel
Just tired of 16:9 devices. Haha. Market is over saturated with them.
some people are sure this is gonna be a 1080p oled and others are sure it's gonna be the 5:3 LCD from the 552
I believe the rg506 was supposed to have that 1080p oled that peeps were referring to
I'm going by anbernic's device naming scheme for this one. I could be totally wrong though
Hope Bumpers, Triggers & Joy Sticks are good. Hall effect if possible
I wonder if theyād make a slim 506 alongside an ergo 556
PPI on that 552 screen is so good.
Or if this has fully replaced the 506 and weāll just get 556 and 406
Who know Anbernic is strange. The whole 35xx plus/H made little sense to me.
I would like to see them use the arc dpad again after all the r+d that went into it
Anbernic does like to release the same SOC in different SKUs. One thing I learned is if you don't like what they offer wait a couple months. Unless you want a plastic 405P with dpad on top. You just get the 405v instead
Imagine if we got a non-ergo pocketable arc alternative with 6 face buttons, 3.5ā screen, arc dpad, inline shoulders
Basically a slightly wider 35xxH to accommodate 2 more action buttons and the arc dpad but without sticks
Not for me.
Iām probably gonna buy an arc as my next handheld regardless
Either lunar new year sale or a spare from Joey
Wait you never had one and think the dpad is great?
The comparisons between the m30 and arc dpad are favourable in all reviews that have both to compare and I love my m30
I like sega style dpads over Nintendo ones
Vita style ones like my odin 2 are great too though
I held off on the arc initially because not pocketable and I was worried about cfw but now weāve got theRA and gamma and Iāve got a new more compact sling bag so itās not just pocket or full size deck sling
You do you Boo
I don't have M30. I bought the ARC for a friend that is really into Sega as a gift. Got it setup and wasn't that impressed by it. Never was fan when Sega had dpads like that. I get why people like it. Just not for me.
ok cool, I get not liking sega dpads, was just worried that maybe this wasn't as good of a sega dpad as I've been led to believe
Just personal preference
RG35xx plus/H are awesome but besides wifi/Bluetooth whats the other benefit. I understand tiny psp, dreamcast & n64. There's millions options if you want to run those better. If only original rg35xx with wifi for "35$" what a gameboy clone it would have been
Even with the marginal chipset upgrade - if it has the 552 screen, I'm in
I dunno if Iād call 3399 to t820 marginal fwiw
true!
it seems to have been morphed into a 5.5" that may or may not be oled and t820
could be 720p LCD like the powkiddy x28/x55 (and hopefully cheap), 1152 5:3 LCD from the 552 (integer scaling dream), or 1080p oled like the pocket air (and probably a bit pricey)
anyone halfway tech saavy able to tell whether those are analog triggers from that pic?
omg they have to be
otherwise why have such a long buttons
that implies they have some travel
I seem to recall Russ asking Anbernic about making a successor to the RG552 but they said that they unfortunately didn't have enough of the screens and couldn't get anymore of them, so it's probably a safe bet to assume the 556 will use a new screen.
cool, so the options at that size are definitley 720p LCD or 1080p oled because those are used in handhelds presently, with 1080p lcd and 720p oled probably also existing
CPU and Gpu matter - Let me give an example
Killzone Pscx2/Aethersx2
Killzone crashes - Why? GSdx plug-in /VU cache overload - GSdx references the directx plugin with PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine - VỤ - Vector Unit cache overload causing known memory leak which there is a patch on pc side but as an experienced game tester in my past - Neocron part time back in 2002 - Aethersx2 can be adjusted to counter these issues to lessen the memory overload due to hardware acceleration and rendering
Adjust Blender Accuracy, Shader config , texture filtering or disabling etc to offset memory load etc - still testing but with emulation gaming CPU/GPU matter in any retro handheld etc
And lastly, Resolution lowering 75x etc
Will the RG556 be strong enough to play ball? Hmmm
I have doubts regarding the RG556
So don't buy it
I wonāt rush to - Iāll wait n see results
I imagine it's near rp4 performance. And pricing that matches it's performance. At least based on past results.
Fair enough
I'm just curious what soc they use
I did reach out to MediaTek and Unisoc regarding certain chipsets with sales/research dept regarding TDP etc seeing as Anbernic had no response - Wait n see what they say
Once they respond - And they should Iāll lead up to retro devices and SoC etc
With further questions etc
crap i must update the OP
T820, comparable to D900 in RP4
if its less than 170 USD + shippig, then its fine
T820 actually would have been nice for Arc if you care about Saturn
If it's similar to D900, that chip seems to be very close to decent Saturn. The chip should be fast enough for Beetle ā hope it doesn't have compatibility issues with the core
Eh hmmmm
It's been 100% confirmed to be A T820 now?
It does kinda feel like weāre getting closer to this fan render all the time lol
Another device scheduled for April, has a 4:3 1280x720 screen, chip undisclosed for now
Not square pixels then if that's the case š¤
Yeah that has to be a mistake
Either 1280x960 or 960x720
I think youāll see a lot of arguments over which of those two would be the better res overall
960x720 better for handheld systems PSP, GBC, GBA - 1280x960 better for 640x480 home consoles (Dreamcast, ps2, GameCube) and vertical arcade cabs (224x320)
for a "high performance" device with a 4:3 screen, I think 960p would be better
so what if GBC/GBA doesn't scale perfectly. that screen res may be high enough where integer scaling shouldn't matter as much for those systems
and personally I wouldn't play PSP on a 4:3 screen anyway
PSP on a 960x720 would be just as large of a display area as on a PSP go while being perfect 2x res fwiw
I donāt think Iād play PSP GoW on it but disgaea or Jāeanne Dāarc maybe
But yeah I agree, if the goal is pocket PS2 then 960p is better
tbh i wouldnt really do PSP on 4:3 screen
but great to hear the "406" dream is still somewhat alive
Yeah if the design is good Iād get it at either res
Hell if the design is good and plastic Iād get it at 640x480 but obviously it would be better at 720 or 960
also it not releasing anytime soon also goes well for me š
need to bit rebuild my fund ... thx to few unexpected expnses š
Nah rg.511, 0.5 inch screen but SD gen 12 chip.
But for real abernic will probably continue to make all kinds of options for at least the next year or so.
Depends
wait what, 4:3 and 1280x720 dont fit in the same sentence surely, that's a 16:9 res
ah nvm someone spotted the error xD
Not for me. I don't want any 16:9 devices anytime soon. I want new 4:3 devices. Anbernic and Retroid won't get my money for a 16:9 for a long time coming. š
Usually if people want a 4:3 device a new 16:9 device isn't going to make any difference, and vice versa
that's what i meant, since rp4 already exists, announcing the 406 kills the interest for the 556 quite a bit
at least for me
For me, since Odin 2 exists the rp4 had no appeal at all
especially once I saw review videos where they had to still use pal roms in some cases or still had to mess with resolution
I only want to tinker with cheap budget devices
yeah i bought the odin 2 after the first rp4p reviews came in, same thing for me
rather spend double and not have to tinker, and get extra switch stuff
Yup. I appreciate the quality of devices retroid puts out. But I'm not pocketing an rp4 either so why bother buying a slightly cheaper device that is much cheaper in what it can do.
the odin 2 is great if you can afford it, obviously a lot of people don't want to spend that much money and its good that options exist at lower price points
but yeah as an odin 2 owner I'm not buying another stick top horizontal 16:9 anytime soon
I agree with this. I just think it's funny reading people expecting Odin 2 performance out of devices not on the Odin 2 hardware level. Like...you are allowed to save longer. You don't have to buy something today. But people these days...no patience and no work ethic lol
If you can save 200, plus shipping...you can save 300
and that selet button is in the way wrong spot. people complained about it being on top but are happy with it being on the right where you cant use it conveniently. š¤·š»āāļø
Thatās a fair comparison- Hope below $170 = Quality with price etc
Hmm... if folks aren't entirely happy with the GameCube and PS2 performance of the D1100 in the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro then it doesn't look like the T820 in the RG556 is going to make them any happier.
Iāve been retesting my Odin lite and been pretty happy with it should be closer to something like that

There does seem to be this weird dissonance with the dearer sub $200 devices, you still get some overhyping the capabilities of T618 models to do PS2/GC, while others turn around and focus on the odd few games on stuff like the rp4pro that struggle.
I'm definitely another one where the Odin 2 has killed my interest in cheaper 16:9 devices though, I was interested to see the performance that the rp4 pro brought to that price range, but zero interest in buying one.
I find it funny to watch dissapointment happen when people realize the Rp4 Pro isn't an Odin 2 mini.
We donāt know the cost of this so if itās like 150-170 I think it could fill in a nice role in the market. Itās a good step up over t618
I meant the rp4 pro. But only recently did anbernic start pricing their devices reasonably
They do seem like they have got a lot better from rg405v onwards
Although that one might have been mostly due to how much more the metal casing was costing them
win600 was the pinacle of their stupid pricing. It's gotten better since then
Yeah, there is a lot of that on both sides. The only GameCube game I've found that runs 100% full speed with zero dips from beginning to end at 1x resolution on my RP3+ has been Alien Hominid, which was a lot of fun to play through even if it did make the device get alarmingly hot lol
On the flip side, it seems like most GameCube games should play really well on the RP4 Pro but there will be those top end ones that just aren't going to run full speed. Even on the Odin2 you have to drop the resolution to 1x and use the Vulkan backend to get full speed performance in Rogue Squadron II; and I imagine there will still be occasional stutters here and there.
I guess I have been lucky and not come across anything beyond RS II that struggles on my Odin 2, which other GC games are troublesome on there?
Rogue Squadron III is the only other one I can think of that might have some slowdown on the Odin 2, though my Odin 2 won't arrive in the mail for a few more days so I'll have to wait to find out for sure.
I'm hoping the Odin 2 will satiate my desire for new devices too, though for the time being I'll admit that I do still kinda want the Powkiddy X55 lol I'll probably hold off on buying any more devices until one comes along with a big 5.5" or 6" screen and the D-pad on top above the left analog stick. It wouldn't even need to have much power, I'd just like a D-pad focused device with a big screen and enough processing power to play up to PS1 at 2x resolution.
I play more ps2 than gc so idk about the hard stuff on that one
Sadly, it hasn't been that effective for me, it's merely locked up the high-end alongside my steam deck, I have still been nabbing a fair few of the cheap ones, got an XX H on the way.
The cheap ones are always fun and tempting to pick up lol I was eyeballing a 35XX H but then I won a 35XX Plus in the Retro Handhelds New Year's Eve giveaway, so I'm just enjoying that for now. It's a nice little device but I'm definitely looking forward to MinUI being available for it, and a little bummed that the screen is a lot dimmer than the screen on the original RG35XX.
One of the most appealing factors of the RP4Pro is definitely the performance to size ratio.
You can always check out muOS in the mean time!
And the screen isn't dimmer. It's much brighter than the OG.
which by iself is getting better and better in crazy pace
yup ... i basically just want one final "4:3" pocketable device
i dont need it to be comparable to odin2 in power ... just stronger than T618 .. so it can handle gc/ps2 at least at 1x (without much of a tweaking)
where will RG556 fit in?
Cool image
slighly smaller than the odin 2
Go big or go home bigger than o2
These probably need to be pinned until we get more photos
#1115941414497427556 message
Just heads up to yāall thinking about d1200 oled. Rumor was 506 which meant ā6ā was supposed to be d1200. Itās actually t820
If they follow their name convention then donāt expect d1200 anymore. Perhaps what Arthur said was true and d1200 stock is pretty much gone
Makes sense consider Retroid went with d1100
Thatās fine by me tbh, Iād rather have cheap t820 than expensive d1200
I doubt that, ARC is bigger than RP3/4.
The arc screen is as tall as a 5ā 16:9 (just narrower) so the 5.5ā wonāt be too too much taller
I just keep repeating myself, that KTR1 screen3:2 high DPI with offset DPAD & Joy-Stick
With the horns the 556 might be slightly taller than the odin 2
You donāt want that screen, itās why they can only make 50 units a month and it costs $250 now
Failure city
More or less a case study in why you should use screens that are well trodden and readily available over sourcing replacement screens for long discontinued phones
That works so well most in cases. screen ratio & resolution works so well with 16:9 , 3:2 , 4:3 & 8:7 contents all Retro consoles with very little black bars.
yeah, i don't get your point, the 556 will be noticeably bigger than both
It might be bigger than Odin2 based on design shared, that's where i am going with comparison
it could be, but I doubt it. The horns might make it as tall
the odin 2 has a 6 inch screen and pretty big bezels, it will be smaller
wanna bet
half way between rp3 and odin 2 in footprint
it's not like i care but it wouldn't make sense
ya, way bigger with little power
offset sticks & arc footprint will be bigger. I believe
Weirdness. I'll take a picture of the screens on both my original RG35XX and the RG35XX Plus later today to show the difference, but on my units the Plus screen is substantially dimmer than the original at max brightness. Yay Anbernic quality control?
That would be using StockOS brightness adjustments
CFW (like muOS) doesn't adhere to that and the brightness is just as bright if not brighter
Ah, that probably explains it! I've got MinUI on my original RG35XX and just the stock firmware on the RG35XX Plus.
Some more shitposting from Max, the diplomat
Translation:
"other than showing off and confusing newcomers who don't understand, such a large area of heat sink is actually ineffective; the heat dissipation area is too large. It's only for show, or perhaps the designer is simply ignorant of the science and technology of thermal design."
That argument seems to ignore the positive benefit from it where you are not heating part of the casing as much as you could be
Which device is this in the pic?
RP4
I mean except for the hinge issue, most of the Retroid devices have been rock solid with few issues. Iād pick a Retroid over some of his designs any day.
Why does Max care at all?
Might be salty because the RP4 is more powerful than his upcoming device right off the bat
WHich company does he work for?
He does the designs for Anbernic from my understanding
Don't see any point to this at all.
18 months later, and the win600 is still Anbernic's most powerful device.
He's just annoyed at being overtaken by....a lot of manufacturers.
Anbernic also releases way more products than Retroid. I doubt Anbernic is terribly concerned about what other companies are releasing. They will still release their products regardless and people will still buy them. š¤·š»āāļø
At least the other companies / designers arenāt openly bashing the competition. No need for it, because as mentioned people are still going to buy Anbernic devices, just like people are still going to buy the others.
I agree, I don't follow what companies or designers say. Just like when there is drama with devs for emulators and such. I never follow any of that. No time for that. š
It seems really childish to argue about stuff on the internet for pointless reasons. At the end of the day if youāre gaming and enjoy it awesome!
I just want fun good devices, I'm not picky about how they get there lol
That's why we are here, fun and enjoyment. š
Those guys can do whatever they want, I'll stay ignorant of it by choice and have fun gaming
Seems like this is RG556 with the metal shield removed
it's not pointless when it's their job
but it's not a very professional way to go about it
Cooling is confusing, way too good. Or useless setup?
IDK, maybe the plan is to overclock that T820 a lot?
Seemed kinda weird to me that the Geekbench scores for the RG556 were the same as for that ZTE phone with T820 to begin with
RG405v fan works but not very use case based
If i am using fan. I will overclock 10-20% on all cores compered stock
on High performance mode
Is there any mention of battery size on this one yet?
Nah, nothing
I am not sure if this cooling is actually good. My lizard brain naturally goes āoooh, all black, must be well madeā, but I am not knowledgeable enough beyond that lol
Its weight might be more any other Anbernic device earlier
I don't know how you could look at that and feel desire for it. Odin 2 has better start&select/back&home button locations, superior analog sticks, probably a superior d-pad, front firing speakers, probably way more performance
It better be cheap, that's the only thing it would have going for it
Well, at least it does have a v-shape control layout, it has that going for it
I see an Anbernic logo button
I just have a bad case of gear acquisition syndrome
Like that it has grips below the triggers unlike the retroid, but the chipset seems a little uninspiring
On the plus side, the sooner they get this one out, the sooner they can move onto other form factors using the chipset
that white looks like a magnet for dirt
I wish it was white matte
That white looks like a preproduction engineering sample, horrendously glossy
All about price now
Chipset should put it at $150, screen will push it up higher though, slightly odd combo really
The nubia phone with it was $190 US and that featured data support and high refresh along with 256gb so Iām hopefully for something like $150
Shame that almost nobody seems to want to do usbc ports on top and bottom
Gpu scores seem higher than I thought they would be. on the positive looks really close to d900
Very accommodating of retroid to cancel the RP4 just in time for this to come out.
Maybe they are the same company as Anbernic?

Yeah, no, I hate glossy shells with a passion
Maybe these donāt have coating though? The buttons look unfinished (no labels, though I kinda dig that). Arc was also first revealed like that
Then again, with Arc Anbernic has put a disclaimer on literally every shot saying āthis shell does not have coating, not a final lookā lol, and here they are putting these next to boxes
ANBERNIC RG556 First look Handheld gaming Android
@azure quest If Anbernic comes out with a RG406M or P I'm buying it day one.
No HDMI out :(
Interested in that 5.5" oled panel, maybe I can say goodbye to my Pocket Air soon
https://twitter.com/RetroHandhelds/status/1748631015550230793?t=4AAnASYS4Hcj4JP-Pnglfg&s=19
Instabuy if it is actually has an oled screen
I thought this had the unisoc t820 not the d1200
Source? I would love to not have it be D1200 š
This is where i first found this
Ah thanks, I'll update!
D900 and Tiger820 are close in benchmarks according to link at the top of this channel
Based on the nubia 5g (t820) it hits 2k in 3dmark wild life as well
Looks like about twice as powerful as t618
Why though? š
Power consumption and drivers
They both use Mali gpus itās gonna be similar
Yeah
pocketable odin lite goes hard tbh
Poor rp4 pro does get cooked though at least the soc
Okay, can someone who speaks Mandarin please explain this to me?
Google Translate makes it seem like a lot of comments on Open Source Handhelds bar on Baidu talk about urine and peeing for some reason:
ä¼°č®”č¦ä¾æęŗę²”便ęŗļ¼č¦ę§č½ę²”ę§č½ļ¼ęåēØ儽å°æå巄设讔ę„å½åē¹ ā It is estimated that it should be portable but not portable, and the performance should not be performance. Finally, use good urine workmanship design as a selling point.
čå¾ēØå°æäŗ? ā Are you willing to pee?
I assume this is a word that sounds similar, or maybe it's some kind of meme, or just a general glitch (kinda how Google Translate always calls Retroid Pocket "Sand Sculpture"), but it's really confusing
the anberbic piss edition
Thatās the liquid cooling
It wasnāt glossy just had liquid on it
I see those "please use good urine" comments all the time on Baidu it's crazy lol
Someone over there has health problems if they pee blue š
https://youtu.be/cCK3ecExDUM?si=WV2rF8Th8xlvuzSM i found a vid of a nubia neo emulation test
#nubia #nubianeo #gamesirx2 #gamesir
#basara #basara2 #aethersx2 #aether #ps2 #ps2games #musou
It looks like the arc but with a different layout and stretched out
No hdmi is disappointing
Might be able to do it via usb c
when has anbernic ever had a hdmi out on anything tbf
Everything except for Unisoc devices, actually
very
All Rockchip devices except for 351 have HDMI
my RG35XX has an HDMI out
tbh im kinda interested in this but i know that
- the software gonna suck ass
- Not trusting the hardware at all after my experience with the rg505
and my partner's 353M
I just want usb c out at least
i did now know that š«”
Yeah, out of all devices that have BT, I think only their Unisoc devices don't have HDMI
my 505 can technically get video out through the usc-c but it sucks and has no sound or something according to people
I didnāt think it could at all
someone has posted a video of it
Albeit I havenāt attempted it on my 405
Nice find
https://youtu.be/7ckgye6YKyc?si=lBmkoR2Ht6wq7rA1 wasnt need for speed a game that had graphical issues on the rp4 pro
this seems to be okayish
Beli Backbone One Controller disini:

Did he tweak anything?
Nah, it ran fine in last Taki's video at 2x
Then again, this is a cheapish phone without any cooling, so maybe RG556 will be able to extract some extra performance
BASARA SPOTTED
If you are looking for a budget 5G phone that games well, look no further than the ZTE Nubia Neo 5G, which costs RM899 (US$190) in Malaysia. This phone is powered by a UNISOC T820 that's extremely capable for its class and has a very unique looking mecha design, but what are the hits and misses? Watch our review to find out more.
Get the ZTE Nu...
hopefully a 406p or better still a 456p or 506p rather than a metal one
English review of the phone has genshin and benchmarks
he also has a vid of the naruto game that always runs good
i guess some ps2, gamecube games will reach 2x resolution albeit a lot wont
also it's struggling a bit actually and basara isn't hard to run at all
i found one for star rail, it seemed kinda slow
i dont think the poster tweaks anything
#nubianeo5g #nubia #honkaistarrail
The Nubia Neo 5G is a mean-looking gaming phone from the creators of the REDMAGIC. But with the current hardware configuration of the Nubia Neo 5G, can it ACTUALLY survive our gaming gauntlet of Honkai: Star Rail, Genshin Impact, PUBG: Mobile and COD: Mobile? Let's find out!
----------------------------------...
this one is english too
tbh i kinda like how the phone looks
i mean, i'm just saying to not expect odin pro lvls of performance
ah hes doing max settings
maybe like rp3+?
Itās a chip from the same company thatās higher tier itās gonna be above t618
Better than 3+ ... odin lite ish maybe
around that but slightly lower from what i'm seeing in those tests

so its like
rp3+/rg405M
RG556 (roughly)
Odin Lite/Rp 4
Rp4Pro/Pocket Air
Odin 2
is the tier of power im seeing right
Where does the pimax place
rp4 base vs rg556 would be a fun discussion prolly
Yeah sounds about right
RG Nano tier
vanish tier
tbh i dont even remember the specs of the pimax
Itās an 865 basically
neat
Itās gonna be interesting to see how close or far off from d900 this is
what if the 556 has the the 552 screen
What was the size of that one?
552 was IPS and 3:2 if I recall
nvm then š«”š
Are they still saying itās going to be oled because the chip did change
Nittrx says oled, that's what I went off of
have we seen that dpad design before? it looks new to me
the buttons are blank so maybe thats just a placeholder piece theyre using
Reminds me of the Wii U pro controller
Looks like a smooth 35xx+ dpad
im too used to the vita style dpads that other ones just feel wrong
No1 can convince the white is not inspired by this
Same. Win4 as my main.
i can see it
wii u retro handheld would be crazy
we as a society have moved past the need for switch sticks
Battery from pictures of the inside is 5500mah
also dpad on bottom š¤¢
V shaped controls are nice. Should make it comfy
I like the clear design, but its a bit mute when the whole back is a heat shield š
the front looks really cool though
The backs on transparent casing devices always look so messy anyway compared with the front
Front is cool yeah. Light bleed from sticks though i imagine
First thing i would turn off š
I didnāt even notice the rgb š hope the price is closer to rp4 than pro
This is anbernic we are talking about š it will be cheap for first 48hrs only haha
167 for the first 48 hours
175 after
Sounds like a fair estimate
Insta buy at that price for meā¦. My wallet will hate me but so be it
This thing's D-pad looks pretty bad. Anybody else think so?
He'd be right too, hopefully those aren't final plastics as they are seriously fugly
My V90 can do TV out š
Just as the update fixed the wellness and YouTube error messages š
What if instead complete white it was, Silver Grey
but where would I leave my finger prints
matte finish and not two-tone would be better
Matte with checker texture at back for more grip
chinese word for piss is a meme for āmaterialsā
Seriously? š could you please explain, why?
its a pun most likely
phonetically sound the same piss and materials
Ah, makes sense, thanks
Whatās the screen resolution?
Pin this pls. š
tbh i am fine either way
i just want my 4:3 endgame with at least 1x GC/ps2
Hopefully, RG406P can be true with analog triggers
Shitty Anbernic's android ?
At least its not another rk3566
true
Just the Arc and 353ps from them using that in the last year, they have already done that many H700 devices.
the next rk3566 we are expecting is from powkiddy
It's what they do!
i am hoping for another weirdass formactor from powkiddy
Itās GLOSSY? Come on man
Its a optimism speaking. Any progress is good progress.
Hoping Anbernic just sends you one... considering you're the only dev saving their android devices.
Let's see š
Would ideally need 2 so that I can first create an unbricker
Like the I did for the 405v
Also this is Android 13, GammaOS is based on Android 12
Not sure if I can just create one big diff patch from untouched lineage to my current state, then apply that to Lineage 20
Or I could be lazy and just put the current GammaOS on there.
Let's see how the stock firmware does first
Was comparing T820 vs Snapdragon 720G from sites & other listing, T820 performs better. Do you think with FAN & Overclock might make do any magic. Good Wii games widescreen is only need
The fan does make a difference on the 405v for sustained performance, doesn't necessarily improve FPS but prevents it from dropping.
Up to Anbernic if they can overclock this chipset, but at the very least it will keep performance consistent
405v difference when using fan vs without
It was more than decade back, I owned Sony Xperia with Single 1 GHz and just 512MB RAM
I did hack level rooting, kernel tweaks to overclock upto 1.5 ghz
Yep sustain performance is key, All core at max when & if needed
Aren't new lineage firmware able to overclock like good old days with "STABLE" result. I am way out loop on dev now
The overclock needs to be done at kernel level, need to add frequencies to the opp-table and also modify any pll tables too
Sometimes there is also a dtb in the uboot that needs updating too, usually contains the opp-table too
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Anbernic seemed to be doing really well with their designs. Then this happens š
Current design is good, no grip required or off putting while shuffling DPAD and Stick
They screwed with proprietary R button & combined home/back button
Why they need to find new place for SELECT & START
Makes me giggle when people complain about the placement of start and select
So t820 is confirmed? What does that cap at? Can it do most gamecube ? š®
So those 2 week old leaks of design and benchmarks wer all very accurate.
Yeah, I don't have issues with the layout at all, it's the glossy finish that I really hate
Difference of opinion, choices is a thing. There's always fun about it companies making something for everyone
Oh, absolutely
If a device thread on Discord doesn't have at least 200-300 comments about how the stick placement is wrong (doesn't matter what layout the device actually has), it means nobody cares about the device
If the device doesn't have sticks, then the comments will be about whether it should, etc
100%. I'm just happy to be playing my favourite child hood games in a package that fits in my pocket and is getting cheaper at better every single year.
Can't wait for a video on this, is it the same display used in the Aya Neo Pocket Air?
I never understand the comments of āwhy get thisā or āwhy does this existā I always like choice. Anyways this looks great to me. Besides that glossy finish
the gloss is a bit.. yea
it feels cheap
like uh
its not the same but it has this kinda vibe yknow
Lots of the comments on Baidu are expressing concern that the OLED will most likely have a crappy backlight PWM, meaning it will cause severe eye strain...
Kind of like my Galaxy S9.
Hmm which 5.5 inch oled display from that generation exists?
These are 5.5" oled displays (all resolutions)
https://m.gsmarena.com/results.php3?fDisplayInchesMin=5.5&fDisplayInchesMax=5.5&nDisplayDensityMax=460&sDisplayTechs=2
Material is liao and urine is niao in chinese, they're different in standard chinese. However, maxzhou speaks with a dialect accent which pronounces liao as nian, that's where this joke comes from.
please notice the "yong how niao " part LOL
I see far superior ergonomics--v-shaped control layout and grips that extend below the bulk of the device, potentially allowing you to grip it with your full hands (Odin 2 is almost there but my pinkies just kind of float). The Odin 2 might have an amazing d-pad, but the ergonomics when using it are so bad I think that cancels out the quality of the d-pad itself. Am I interested in buying this? Of course not--I already have an Odin 2, and overall, for me, the Odin 2 is the superior device. But for someone who prioritizes ergonomics over what you and I might prioritize? I 100% see the appeal.
This thing will be in a completely different price bracket. It'll likely be half what the pro costs, and the base is never in stock.
It's like comparing an RP2S to an RP4 pro.
Almost guaranteed š¤£
Determine Price Reasonableness - Anbernic made choices which wasn't inline with reality in the past
If non-oled, they would be insane to go beyond $180 with this.
Personally I'd prefer an AMOLED. Then I can take it outside without potentially damaging it.
If it is AMOLED, I suspect it will be the Galaxy A7 (2015) screen. It's likely that there is a surplus of those IMO
But thats just speculation
According to the specs it should be pretty close.
This thing is so fugly
This Handheld needs to hit the $150 - $180 with Shipping and Handling price range in order for it to sell well.
Hasn't been finalized and released yet. š
What a bleh chip for an oled screen
Anbernic seems to love the business of just ever so underpowered chips
Probably more like the whatever they can get the cheapest chip.
They also like to slowly iterate
They won't get SD and look at the D1100 doesn't look like the best option unless they all develop better drivers and stuff. So maybe they could of used the 900? But might be easier using unisoc with current available drivers and such.
Awesome, thanks š
Iāve seen a lot of those as well, but Iām honestly not sure how these users could know which screen Anbernic will use
Either way I would definitely wait for a review, preferably from Taki
For real, the only thing going for the 505 was that it was mildly pocketable if you were desperate (outside of price of course). I hope they don't change the 406m much outside of specs needed for perfect PS2 and HDMI out. Right now a 406m with rp4pro specs is my dream machine
Iām confused why you need to compare this with Odin 2. If this costs as much, this will be DOA
And Anbernic has okayish prices these days IMO
I thought they posted early bird pricing was like $180.
What if, they update this model with Snapdragon.
I donāt think Anbernic will ever use Snapdragon
Then I'll wait til they update the 405m(same form factor and HDMI out) with snapdragon. That's be a dream come true
Qualcomm if only they make Snapdragon G series dirt cheap for Android Handheld
https://retrohandhelds.gg/anbernic-rg556-revealed/ Here's a short article on the reveal, by our very own @molten glade
Everyone seems to be relying on GadgetVersus to claim T820 is more power-efficient than Dimensity, I'm not sure how reliable their data is
Like GV says T820 has a TDP of 5W and D900 is 10W
T770 is also 5W
But it also says T760 is 10W, why would it need twice the power? Same core setup, same GPU, same memory https://gadgetversus.com/processor/unisoc-tanggula-t760-vs-unisoc-tiger-t820/
And I've not been able to find any official source to support these numbers.
In other cases (e.g. RK3588) GadgetVersus uses power consumption data for a whole SBC to say how much the chip needs, so who knows what they use here
On the other hand, in Taki's review RP4 Pro peaked at about 12W total, I think ā so could be that 5W for T820 is accurate, but 10W for D900/D1100 is not
Comparison between Unisoc Tanggula T760 and Unisoc Tiger T820 with the specifications of the processors, the number of cores, threads, cache memory, also the performance in benchmark platforms such as Geekbench, Passmark, Cinebench or AnTuTu.
But would be awesome if true ā more efficient chip with 10% more battery
Yea, take those websites with a grain of salt. Theyāre not bad to get an idea of what to expect but wait for hard data.
Agree. They did not help when we were researching the Razor Edge Handheld. Wrong Data.
ok the wait for 456/406 is on now with 556 revealed
I am happy anbernic is trying with higher end android handhelds. Have my fingers crossed that some rp4(non pro) people sell theirs off for this.
Good article. If T810 is comparable with the d900, but with better battery, itās a great platform compete vs RP4 non-pro.
The issue with that, unless Anbernic lands close in price. Those selling the RP4 non pro will sell for fairly close to MSRP. That's what happened with the 2+ and 3+
As for the RP4 Pro, they already have the Win600 with similar battery life
unless you are in EU
retroid is usually horrible for eu pricing
Oh I am ok with that. I donāt need a deal. I just donāt want to deal with waiting for Retroid to ship.
I think this comes in at 180ish dollars.
Those are the estimates currently
If itās over that price I donāt think it does well in the west. With the other options out there. How much is a Odin2 base again? Are they 300 or 350? AYN and Retroid helped lower anbernic prices.
Just checked the AYN site. Guess they sold out of the Base models. The pro is 369 before shipping.
And that is the thing with odin 2, RAM is starting at 8gb. These other companies like Anbernic need to start increasing the ram along with the SOC. I just don't see why some of them are stuck at 1gb or 2gb of system ram.
How much ram do their T618 handheld have?
It's been sold out pretty constantly for a long time now.
Realistically, won't anbernic stick with one chipset for any form factor variants, that's what the last number in their models indicates with them after all
I saw a community post from RGC this week it was back in stock. Guess they sold out fast
Lasted a few hours at most iirc
3 or 4
I just donāt have lots of things open at once on a handheld for ram to be a real problem. I know switch emulation needs more. Besides that. I am fine with 4-6GBs
Also RAM is the cheapest upgrade and companies charge the most for
I've seen Vita3k asking for about 9 GB at times.
My Pocket Air has 6gb of ram for example
Oh yeah I forget about vita3k at times. What games are still stuck on the vita. I guess there are some good ps2 titles ported over that might play better through the vita3k
You can also load PSP games into ram using ppsspp. If I remember correctly
And PS3 titles.
Gravity rush is the big Vita one. Runs pretty much perfect now.
My pocket Air is 12gb, and it can only just handle the ram requirement. But other than the Ram, Vita3k is surprisingly undemanding. The Pocket Air is fine to upscale 5x, 6x, as much as you want on a lot of games.
Nice
How does borderlands 2 handle. Does emulation fix the dips on the vita ?
It's just that the lack of RAM in handhelds throws people I think. Run out of RAM and it crashes. So people think it's a buggy emulator, when it just needs more RAM.
Once they get those requirements down I imagine it'll run really well on T618's.
Never done it myself, but I know that one does play well.
As long as itās supported. I remember you used have to high end PC to run WiiU in 2018. Not you can get way with a lot.
The new Next Lite is $300, and will be able to run BoTW better than the Wii U did.
I am just happy that we are moving in the correct direction.
Just need someone to pick up that ps2 torch.
At this rate, it'll be quicker to just wait for winlator to get good enough to run Pcsx2 š
Take that with a huge grain of salt d1200 at least can hit 12w
T820 on 6nm probably goes beyond 5w
Even g99 with only 2 a76 could pull above 5w
man
I'm so conflicted on this
this seems like the oled sequel to the 505 I was waiting for
but it looks so dang ugly to me lol
i kinda like it even though i am no directly interested in it š
pls let there be different colorways with a different finish
sounds liek good base for what i want aka 4:3 device with similar specs and buttons
Iām waiting on the screen to be announced they changed the soc. The screen might have as well from the rumors
didn't they just confirm 1080p oled like yesterday
I donāt think itās been confirmed
Itās a possibility as the og rumor was d1200+1080p 5.5 oled
I'm going off of the post on reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/19b54xb/_/
Possible 2 versions like Retroid?
I get that but that post doesnāt link to any source for that info
Itās just a reference back to the og rumor but, the chip has been changed from said rumor
The rumor of oled was still with d1200
So hard to say
Perhaps they got same oled as ayaneo now?
yea I know the old rumor
With this chipset I kinda hope itās just a 720p lcd and the handheld is cheap rather than 1080p OLED and itās expensive
Thatās a potential for sure (would be my guess) but I donāt feel confident in that guess
My only complaint about it is the glossy look of it
Basically replace the x55/x28 with something that can do some ps2/gc
This is gonna lose hard to the RP4 pro if they go near $200
Assuming it is t820 and not d1200
that's what I'm hoping
The closer to $150 the better
Whether they loose or win, they keep the Ergo Design for "Next revision"
180 would work well for pricing
I think that would be the okay middle ground where itās asking a decent amount but not too much where no1 is interested
I just hope the t820 runs cool enough that it can properly replace the t618 in the smaller categories (406 wen)
Guess we will find out soon. Would be nice though 406m with a higher res 4:3 screen
I think anbernic waits until after CNY
Seems complicated but it wouldnāt surprise me if they needed to scramble when they learned about the RP4 Pro. Feels like Ayaneo had to scramble with the pocket air when they learned about the Odin 2
I have no idea the behind the scenes stuff. I would like an oled but if it makes it cost too much probably not
It does feel like a after cny device but nice to see some early shots of it
552 was expensive (still is) maybe a 506 or 406 will be more budget conscious
Oddly an OLED seems like a big deal now, but it did not give the 505 mindshare over the RP3+, at least here in the US
I donāt think they scramble with anything. I think it was in the works for a while. Just the timing makes it look that way.
Pocket air was coming out before we knew about the official Odin2
Maybe, but Ayaneo releasing the pocket air, stopping future production and also announcing they have something else āfeelsā like a scramble
AYAneo said they had to sell them at a loss. I see why they discontinued them.
Yikes, I guess they had to fulfill the preorders based on their announcement. Good on them for not changing the price Tesla-style
Like Poe said a oled screen in this wouldnāt be a great idea. I think that is why the pocket air was so much
There is good OLED, and there is old Vita panel OLED.
They were always a limited run. They were sold at cost to get rid of the d1200 chips, as they unexpectedly got a good deal with SD for the chip in the Pocket S.
$100 more than the RP4 pro, but bigger, bigger fan, free DHL shipping, free case, bigger battery, OLED....you can see how the extra costs add up.
I didnāt know that was their plan the whole time. I just remember saying that they made no money on them
Yep
We know it got delayed if u go off the leaked road map it was supposed to be a q3 device not q4. Iām assuming the android build was in a worse state than it already is causing a delay
It certainly wasn't the original plan š
Initially they wanted to do the D1200 as an ongoing thing. But once they got the deal on the snap dragon chips they changed their mind. But yeah, they sold at cost just to clear the chips, as they didn't want them. It's why when the chips all sell they are not making any more.
Software and price are the two biggest factors
Community fix or itās bad probably on this one
Makes sense.
Gamma said he was going to cancel his rp4 order. He might of been joking
Can't seem to get the Rp4 anymore either, might have been cancelled. Certainly didn't sell out
Retroid need the Flip 2 to save them š
Although I imagine if they were planning to put a d1100 in that, they may be rethinking plans given the Rp4 pro heat issues.
Didnāt Max post about the heating setup on the rp4
Does Anbernic take petition - I have one for them using a "Snapdragon CPU" on next handheld
Yeah, he saying they didn't know what they were doing.
I'm not sure he counts as an unbiased judge though
This looks a lot better than the rp4 but thatās just my opinion. It has a heatpipe along with a bigger heatsink
True lol
id get it if it had a stronger chipset and hdmi out
Tbf to the rp4 even the pocket air needs itās fan on it or it overheats and itās got a bigger cooler
Let's hope they work out a way to fix it anyway.
Image is bad but donāt seem to be oled
Hard to say tho
Just thrilled they need to keep switch sticks
It's classic anbernic, switch style sticks, minor iterative performance boost that doesn't really mean much, nice and shiny price tag
Lol right? I understand the switch sticks for a more compact device, but not for something as big as this.
I was considering it
But I'll keep it for now and wait for more details
I will consider if: less expensive than rp4 and capable of some GameCube. But Iām not hopeful.
This might put some stiff competition against the Gameforce ACE though.
I have a gpd xp plus which also has a d1200. i can post some ultrawide 21:9 gamecube running at 2x resolution if you want
Wait I thought this was unisoc
Iāve owned a pocket air so I know what the 1200 can do. This is kind of a PAir clone thenā¦
oh wait, no nevermind, they dropped that that was the 506 not 556
No, we want thiccc Megaman
