I think people expecting to put anything in it that way better start by working on an IRL Bag of holding

#

Because you ain’t getting really anything of power in the backend of the Portal

#

It’s way too thin to hold anything but the bare minimum it does

#

unless you plan on giving it a wart or stuff

#

But I feel like that type of mod would make a device most people see as stupid already look like the smartest product on the planet in hindsight lol

subtle pebble
#

This device would be perfect for browsing Dreams.

#

Too man people don’t understand just an accessory .

#

People who have no intention of even buying a PS5, same as PSVR2 on PC mod, they just want the cheap goods but say screw that if it means needing a PS5.

#

It is like a grand version of this.

#

Way better versions of back buttons existed well well before Sony launched this one, and they even were less bulky. But Sony made theirs anyway.

#

Also not forgetting their other niche products like this one for the disabled,

#

Even something like the PS5 Camera too.

#

Nice product for niche needs.

#

I just played the Resident Evil VILLage Cloud demo on the Switch Lite… Verizon FiOS… the graphics looked good, BUT it was really hard to aim because it would almost always overshoot. I experienced practically the same with Sony’s first-party Remote Play app (just found out about MirrorPlay for iOS, haven’t tested it properly yet). So IF the Portal plays like those examples, you wouldn’t want to play any precision games on it (FPS genre, platformers like Celeste, racing games).

#

However… in the past, I played a demo of Crysis II on the GaiKai service (waaaay long ago, GaiKai was purchased by Sony!), and The Witcher II and Sniper 4 on GeForce NOW, and on those two services I found the FPS and action games to feel entirely playable 99% of the time. So here’s hoping the Portal “Feels” like that!

#

It’s the same person who developed PSPlay for Android, but it had to be de-branded to deal with Apple’s Stupid App Store Policies

#

(Hence the MirrorPlay naming and bordering-on-parodical face buttons on the app icon)

subtle pebble
#

I also have had one fail on me but my fault and uninstalled it.

#

Which one did you have trouble with?

#

Also the front mic of the PS5 controller usually just breaks off but who needs that anyway 🤣

#

They are a little tricky to install you need to know where to fold the and what piece to cut off depending on model number of controller.

#

Actually wait a minute. I asked EXtremeRate and they have a new model dropping for PS5 very soon.

#

It is the same as this one their newest on Xbox.

#

But this is one I had on my controller till I borked it.

#

New ones dropping for Sony will be like this

#

And the Data Frog ones are seem okay, but they have macros so is cheating if you use them.

#

And this was my PS4 eXtremeRate ones. Ignore the battery pack.

jagged estuary
#

Honest admission time: I got an Extremerate full shell conversion for my DS4… I forget which model, but it changed the ergonomics too and I was pretty excited about it. The controller worked before I started on it too, and I took photos of my entire process in the hopes of making a video discussing the process. But… no signs of power once I got it put together. I used to repair Apple phones (followed their training), so I thought I was pretty meticulous and careful, but when I failed I was too embarrassed to follow up on it.

#

But their products are really cool. I am sad my sample is broken, but I don’t know how I would prove the Extremerate was defective since I can’t undo it now.

This is what I mean about media putting PlayStation into people’s minds with this seemingly mediocre product just before Starfield drops, good or bad they love the attention. PlayStation 4D Chess moves.

#

Also do you notice a literal starfield in Sony’s promo images? 🤣 it’s obvious what they’re doing.

#

A portal to the stars, but what might that be 🤔 what else is trending, yes it’s No Man’s Sky’s newest update and the biggest advancement for PSVR2 ever for the game which you need a PS5 to also play.

#

If I had a PS5 I would tbh. At this point I'm going to wait till they release a decent bundle with a PS5 and this together.

sour zodiac
#

i think that depends on screen quality and if they do anything to improve the streaming experience

#

i can do chiaki on steam deck which has the pro of having back buttons, but the screens not great and the streaming quality is so-so

#

the backbones seemed decently successful at $100 and if you got that just for remote play then this for $200 seems reasonable

sour zodiac
#

nova pink, cosmic red, midnight black (guess thats sky themed), galactic purple, starlight blue

#

also similar sorta sparkly star stuff that the UI generally has

jagged estuary
#

That’s what I thought too… I’ve had a galactic purple since before Microsoft acquired Bethesda.

subtle pebble
#

I call the PS5 theme brown…was a bit disappointed in it at first.

#

PlayStation also has PS Stars collectible system now. And I guess Astro Bot😅

#

If you factor in it’s a legit spare controller too, that is almost half the price of 200 value for a controller. Not sure you could only play with the Portal as your main controller and be happy about it being so wide, but it’s possible, could even (same as PSVR2) probably not even have the PS5 connected to any TV and that is your only screen.

summer phoenix
#

There’s already the #841722663960707143 channel

#

Maybe just leave this thread up until it’s actually in consumer hands then if it gets modding instead of just using it as a ps5 controller it should probably get a real channel under corpo console

#

But if it’s just a PS5 controller and nothing else I doubt there will be enough discussion separate from PS5 discussion in #841722663960707143 to warrant a thread, let alone a channel

silent silo
#

Yeah, it can't hurt to keep this thread up until then, just on the off chance the specs surprise us all and there's a way to turn it into something decent. I'm not expecting it, but maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise for once.

#

Like, I'm sure we'll know before it releases what the specs are, and that'll tell us all we need to know.

harsh oriole
#

It's marketed and advertised as an Accessory, and the leaks we got a few weeks ago point to a nearly empty internal footprint, I doubt there's much at all to mod.

#

So yeah,
Pre-launch: leave this up.
Post-launch/when more info on the hardware shows up: discussion can migrate to #841722663960707143.

#

Makes me think that the PlayStation Classic wasn’t all that bad of a device… Sony probably secured their computer chips and started designing well in advance of launch, and they knew that PAL rom versions would run at full speed on the old version of the PlayStation emulator they were using. They might have started designing it when they heard of the Nintendo Classic.

#

PSC ended up being my first experience with emulation (besides Bleem!) 😂

#

And you know there’s a false correlation between a console being successful and having a small controller!

subtle pebble
#

I had a PS4 controller I removed the rumble weights from was so light.

jagged estuary
#

Yeah... I imagine a controller with the linear haptic engine from an iPhone would be much lighter than the rotating "rumble packs" in the DS4 and older + all Xbox controllers with rumble.

#

Come to think of it... did the Xbox 360 support rumble? Like, at all?

#

It's been awhile since I used the controller 😅

heavy pumice
#

360 controller has pretty strong rumble

subtle pebble
#

The new Xbox controller is going to use the rumble for speakers too. PS5 could do this but has the actual speaker instead.

#

Actually works great on cyberpunk some things use the speaker but I wonder why they did not utilise the lights on the controller as well.

ancient kindle
subtle pebble
#

Something like a electronic light show during the electronic buzzing I envision. The controller itself is our connect to the technological side of a cyberpunk gadget in a way.

#

The red and blue flashing during police cases in GTAV is another cool one and n a dark room would have subtle effect on a reflection and surrounding area you do not need to look at the controller.

#

I think Borderlands games like 3 matches weapon manufacturer colour with light on the controller.

#

Another great small detail I love for games not everyone will use is when the devs add music to the menu when highlighting the game.

#

That said this Portal device will be in your hand and you will be looking at it. So the lights could be even more additional factor of small value to gameplay enjoyment. The devs themselves need to program it though.

I was honestly disappointed more games didn't take advantage of the DS4 trackpad, or the pretty good gyroscope that's been in Sony's controllers since the PS3. Some games use the left and right sides as different buttons, and of course you can use the trackpad (and gyro) for typing, but I guess other devs looked at the last Killzone game and decided it was a gimmick not present on other consoles.

Word is we may see PS3 emulated games on 5 but not sure.

jagged estuary
# subtle pebble Technically that includes PS4, PS2 classics etc.

Does it though? Unless a game was remastered and ported to PS4/5, it would need to be cloud streamed from PlayStation Plus Premium (or whatever that tier is called), and the Portal product description explicitly states it won’t do that. The games have to be installed and running off your PS5.

#

Don’t ask me WHYYYYY, lol, cuz I don’t know.

subtle pebble
#

I guess they are ported, but they are just emulated with no changes really all the Jak and Daxter games for instance.

balmy lotus
#

You still need a ps5 console. PS portal is not a standalone device to play sony games. I do not see a lot of hype for this.

subtle pebble
#

I know, it is clearly advertised everywhere as a “remote player”

#

As someone who owns and only really games on a PS5 it seems fine by me, but I will not be buying one though, maybe in future preowned.

#

It’s not meant to be hyped either I imagine.

#

Is anyone hyped about the new earbuds, or that 300 dollar Edge controller, probably even less.

#

They’re kind of literal props to support PS5 console, sadly seemingly similar to PSVR2, which I own and just play Synth Riders on it.

jagged estuary
# subtle pebble Is anyone hyped about the new earbuds, or that 300 dollar Edge controller, proba...

I'm actually pretty hyped about the new Playstation heaphones. I'm not sure the fullsize, over ear headphones will meet my snobbish comfort desires (if you like any leather/protein leather/pleather pads, you're already less snobbish than me, haha!), but both use Planar Magnetic drivers and they were announced right at the same time Sony announced they were purchasing the boutique audiophile company Audeze, where Planar Drivers are their specialty, with a rich powerful sound. I also hate Bluetooth audio gaming... but the Sony link actually seems promising, I would totally use the dongle with my PS5 and desktop PC! Lossless wireless audio, imperceptible audio lag (which I'm sensitive to)? Take my (nonexistent) money! Add to that, Sony's own audio team has impressive design chops, though typically I find them TOO bass strong (many people love them specifically for that) the Sony WM1000X series have been THE active noise cancelling headphones to buy for several generations.

#

I kinda would rather get the Audeze Maxwell over the Playstation over ears, due to Audeze's house sound and the tuning options of that wireless gamer headset, but the Playstation over ear headset is cheaper. The truly wireless in-ears may be more comfortable for me, also I think they look kinda cool.

harsh oriole
#

Exactly

#

I’m actually really more excited for the Pulse Explorer Buds than anything else

#

I already Daily Drive AirPods Max because Apple’s ANC and Transparency modes are best in industry, but I don’t like having to use them wired with my DualSense on PS5

#

also, they’re actually bad for PSVR/PSVR2, despite being super comfortable

#

Too Sweaty.

#

The new earbuds with PSVR1/2 are like the perfect Use Case IMO

jagged estuary
#

That’s a bit subjective, of course,

harsh oriole
#

My brief time with Sony’s ANC came from a defective InZone H9

#

And, well, simply put after researching it, apparently it’s a relatively common issue with the XM4 ANC

#

Which the H9 use internally

#

And the Transparency just wasn’t as good

#

Which, like, maybe I’m weird but with my Maxes because they’re so comfortable and the Transparency mode is so good my ears very rarely are uncovered lol

#

As seen by my PFP

jagged estuary
#

But if you get the new player station TWS, I hope they manage to impress! TWS typically have weaker ANC than full-size headphones, but their ear plug nature helps a lot regardless (especially with higher pitched noise, the higher the freq the harder it is for ANC to be effective)

harsh oriole

#

Could indicate the Supply from Sony, and their expectations for how many they would sell around the globe.

silent silo
#

Yeah, just because it's sold out in some places, it doesn't mean they started off with that many to begin with. It's a good way of trying to build hype, but without actual numbers, it's meaningless.

#

That article is especially bad, since its premise is "More than 40 million PS5s have been sold, therefore this accessory will sell a million units quickly!"

#

That's...not how sales or logic work.

bleak vale

bleak vale
#

Then said more info to come later

#

100% they put that on portal

subtle pebble
#

#

Knowing it may not sell well also, maybe, draws them in since it becomes scarce, collectors will want it even if they do not use it.

subtle pebble
#

Or did that change?

jagged estuary
#

Download in Down Undah! 😂

#

It’s a very true and real thing that broadband and streaming aren’t available everywhere, not to mention server infrastructure etc. Even if you have access, distance can affect the quality of the experience, for example Mint Blitz is a really talented Halo content creator, but he has latency problems playing on North American servers (I believe he’s from Australia, but I could be wrong).

subtle pebble
#

yes no servers around, so we never got PS Now. And top tier PS Plus is nerfed.

jagged estuary
#

At least you can sympathize with Retro Game Corps.

subtle pebble
#

Imagine if portal works with hacked PS5s? PT on Portal etc.

#

I imagine they thought of that and blocked the access to lower firmware PS5, though IDK

#

Can we add this channel to non “rumor_mill” channel?

But they have a mod now for it to run at 60 on PS5.

jagged estuary

From everything I've read, you literally can only do playstation streaming

Can't even use bluetooth headphones

And I don't believe you can do local streaming (source?)

low rose
#

If they had it do cloud gaming (even if it was locked to PS only) and allow the ps5 to be used separately, id easily upgrade my ps+ membership. It only being a ps5 remote screen is what kills it for me.

subtle pebble
#

Also since it uses same sticks as PSVR2 controller, stick covers will work. The sticks on PSVR2 are pretty good for small sticks, hard/impossible to DIY replace and also can get drift.

#

Hoping they add updates to Astro’s Playroom to add a level for PSVR2, and Portal.

#

(With that collectible Sense, VR2 and Portal models to put in the Labo museum room, I guess they can’t do it all since new PS5 model exists now too, there is a little room left in there though if they hang from ceiling)

grim aurora

I’m buying mine at $99 whenever they hit that

#

No rush at all

jagged estuary
vast gate
#

Okay so it can actually do local streaming?

#

Cause I was struggling to find that

jagged estuary
#

Just to check… what do you think is local streaming?

#

All the product page stuff talks about how WLAN streaming will be better than remote streaming, because you can’t rely on public WiFi to provide high bandwidth/low latency (but that’s an option too).

#

They don’t say WLAN though… just local streaming. But they are talking about intranet.

jagged estuary
vast gate
#

Yep, intranet, like Moonlight. Or using Psplay does, local. Not using your ISP internet ever. Let me check again, maybe my simple google failed me.

#

I assume it does this, I mean it has to

dim maple
# vast gate

Ooof. Roughly steam deck size. And I’m still not sure what the gaps between the screen and dual sense is for

#

vast gate

zenith venture
#

This is literally the only reason why I ordered one

#

Too much mystery with this thing

jagged estuary
#

I liked that it goes into detail

vast gate
#

Because the writing sounds as if it's using actual internet

#

Even at home

zenith venture
#

Lol I wouldn’t put it past Sony

jagged estuary
#

What part reads like home is using internet, not just WLAN?

#

It seems pretty clear to me. Sony repeatedly emphasizes that the home WiFi will give the best experience, and when they mention that playing over the internet they always include the caveats of potential quality differences, and list minimum and recommended data speeds. Network speeds aren’t mentioned until talking about “also be played wherever you have access to broadband internet WiFi with at least 5Mbps…”

#

The “also” denotes alternative to me. But the 300Mbps and up typical of WiFi internal communications since WiFi 802.11N will probably be faster and smoother (more reliable)

#

The mystery to me is if the latency will be as poor as the official Sony Remote Play app, which was essentially unplayable for me with any game requiring timing or aiming at moving targets.

#

By the way… Sony did not delineate here if it recommends 15Mbps upload as well as download, BUT for the record Comcast will only be able to cast video out from your house at up to 5-6Mbps even if you have their BLAST! plan (no relation to Sega Genesis), so Comcast XFINITY customers I would recommend ONLY getting a Portal if you’re ok with using it at home, not on the go, until you get a good internet provider.

#

(Comcast supports like 250Mbps download, sometimes more, but the gameplay video would need to be uploaded from your PS5 if you’re playing outside your house, at which point you would be bottlenecked by Comcast’s 5-6Mbps maximum upload speed for any tier of their service speed. Comcast knows this is lackluster compared to other carriers like FiOS, so they make it very difficult on their website to see what their upload speeds are, but I can tell you as an ex-customer that it was inadequate for hosting Twitch or YouTube live streams).

We'll see when mine arrives I guess

Yeah looks like its not a direct connection.

Mines not bad. But I can play remote play from a laptop for better quality and direct connection

The PS5 screen just looks so weird on a Mac

I also have an elgato capture device if I can just figure out how to stop the preview in OBS from being so dark

The one thing that gives me hope is how there are software updates. So what’s preventing Sony from adding more features

They could’ve easily just had a “out of the box is what you get” deal

IGN says you can't connect to wifi that requires a browser

I’m not gonna get it here only to go to my local Best Buy and return it haha

I also just grabbed another PS5, the slim one.

weak wagon

If this got moonlight……just sayin

#

Problem i have is my Logitech g cloud is just too good

#

It does all my streaming needs 😅

dim maple
#

Except PS5 lol. That’s why I got this. I don’t want to drain my phone battery using backbone. And using a tablet seems meh

#

Not as handheldable

weak wagon
#

Yeah. Same reasoning for my purchase really

dim maple
#

But even in the same room if it’s gonna be super laggy then it’s a return

weak wagon
#

So i can just carry on 😂

dim maple
#

My idea use is when my son is on the tv or when I just want to lay down after a day and not boot up the actual PS5 even though I have one with a g-story screen attached

#

What a weird device lol

#

Seems like psplay/mirrorplay works better?

vast gate
#

I've found psplay to be better than the official app personally

mental spoke
#

Both Xbox and ps5 official apps suck so bad lol

#

I’ve been loving local streaming before bed on xbx play though. That shit rules

vast gate
#

Check out xbplay instead of xbxplay

#

But yep

mental spoke
#

Seems like people differ on which they like

#

But since xbxplay works for me I’ll just play that lol

#

In any case, I can’t see getting this even if I had a ps5

#

Decent screen though

vast gate
#

I can't remember why I went xbplay, I think it was the local 360 game support from my series s, xbxplay doesn't have that right?

mental spoke
#

Like playing 360 games? I’m pretty sure Xbxplay does, just need 1080p set not 720

vast gate
#

Yeah 360 games locally off my series s (so not xcloud ones)

#

That's cool then!

#

Oh it's the opposite! It doesn't do xcloud!

mental spoke

Oh yes lol

#

I think it’s remote only

Gotcha okay makes sense, that was the reason

On the portal subject

I see the use case for PS5 only peeps

The competition in this price range isn't good either

I’d consider real competitors at that price to be a phone/controller and a used/on sale gcloud

And I would still take those

#

If you could find a way to get psplay on the portal then you have a fun time

vast gate

I don't disagree, but for an actual handheld separate from your phone and controller, there isn't anything

Abxylute is closest

# vast gate Wifi 5 apparently

Wi-Fi 5 is more than enough though. It supports MIMO, over a Gigabit/s of transmission speed, etc. 1,100 Mbit/s can carry a 1080p video stream at 6Mb/s several times over. So WiFi 5 shouldn’t be a limiting factor, it’s just not turned up to 11. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11ac-2013

IEEE 802.11ac-2013 or 802.11ac is a wireless networking standard in the IEEE 802.11 set of protocols (which is part of the Wi-Fi networking family), providing high-throughput wireless local area networks (WLANs) on the 5 GHz band. The standard has been retroactively labelled as Wi-Fi 5 by Wi-Fi Alliance. The specification has multi-station throug...

Just got MirrorPlay/PSPlay working with my iPad/PS5 for the first time. Still can’t play competitive FPS, but maybe it’s enough for Spider-Man 2?

Significant point was that the PS5 was on the 2.4 GHz WiFi, not wired.

Even 5ghz would be better if you can swing that

#

I think the PSP was a big success for them (at least in Japan), while the Vita did not catch on like they expected. I think they’re also super proprietary because they’re afraid of losing control of their game licensing income?

#

So, they did something different from the Vita, to their credit we don’t have to re-buy games or use proprietary storage media, but they really must believe in their remote experience even if we don’t see it.

#

It really bugs me that I now have to basically choose between connecting to my best screen (OLED 4k 120Hz HDR), hard wiring into my router in my home office (cheap 1080p IPS display) to get good handheld results, or moving my router & making the rest of the house have to pull WiFi from the basement.

#

So, I almost hope that hardwired connection still isn’t worth it 😂

vast gate
#

You should add an access point upstairs

jagged estuary
#

The Router/AP is currently upstairs; I’m thinking my PS5 is using the 2.4gHz band because the 5Ghz doesn’t reach downstairs, and if I’m just using a mesh network I’d probably still end up with 2.4GHz anyway.

jagged estuary
vast gate
#

At that point you'd just hardwire

vast gate
#

The AP I meant is the hardwired ones

#

Could use moca adapters if your house has no network drops

jagged estuary
#

Holes in the floor 😂 (I put a hole In the floor so I could extend the router upstairs).

#

I’m unfamiliar with Moca adapters. Like, power socket to Ethernet thingies?

vast gate
#

Lol yes the redneck engineering works too

#

Moca actually uses the coax output

#

Most houses are wired for coax for tv's

jagged estuary
#

I had the Verizon guy do it for me, thank you very much 😂

vast gate
#

So you do one adapter near router, one near where you want an AP

#

And it converts coax to Ethernet

#

Works so much better than power over Ethernet

#

One step down from actual network drops imo

jagged estuary
#

Hmm, I trust Coax more than I trust those power line adapters.

vast gate
#

Night and day, I've had both

#

The power ones are awful

#

Coax ones are stable and high throughput

jagged estuary

My first paycheck can’t come soon enough (and it’s not going to be that big, sadly)

I have a PS5 on wired. So that should be benefiting for this right?

Unless it takes a direct correction in same room

I’ll try mirror play as well

jagged estuary
# dim maple Unless it takes a direct correction in same room

The signal must go to a router first. There’s some speculation whether it needs to go through the Internet too, but I doubt it if you’re on the same network (my MirrorPlay app works even though mine’s not set up to work over the internet). But yes, hardwired PS5 to a router is best, plus 5Ghz WiFi to your handheld.

dim maple
#

Hmmm. If it goes through router anyways yeah I’ll connect to hardliner ps5

I just got a SlimS5 to attach to a portable screen, hr still not always in the mood for that

Some quick thoughts:

  • whatever "software" they made for this took like 5 seconds, PSPlay makes this look like it's the unofficial product
  • yep, some issues with how they're adjusting the image, it has a ghosting effect + pixelation compared to other devices
  • screen looks nice when not being pixelated
  • speakers are absolutely awful so far
  • setup was easy, much easier than PSPlay is, so it has that going for it

Otherwise, literally feels like a tablet sandwiched inbetween PS5 controllers.

This is for Sony Fanboys that only use official products. There are so many out there. Just not in this space.
