I have a problem where when I direct through an approach the vnav will be stuck at the altitude constraints in the approach, therefore not working very well. Is this a know problem? Any workaround?

a possible workaround would be to use op des while manually keeping to constraints

You might try using “direct” to the waypoint/fix you’re heading to. It then re-calculates it.
