it looks like your logs show your world did successfully migrate to the new format, so there should be a world_gen_settings.dat file. to double check, you are looking in the data/minecraft folder?
Yes, in the world/data/minecraft folder
huh, that's odd
well, send me what seed you're using, and i can recreate the file from scratch
Yeah I was kinda stumped, tried to restart several times to try to force generate it but no luck
actually, should double check - do you have any other worlds in the container?
Just nether and end
well, i can still try to recreate it once I know your seed. if it works, then we'll just blame paper jank.
the part that worries me, is that the error your logs show (which i was expecting) happens when the game reads the world_gen_settings.dat. so I don't know what it's trying to read if that file doesn't exist...
Long shot, but also just try refreshing your panel, maybe the new files aren't rendering or something
That's strange, I tried refreshing before and just gave it another go but nothing showing up, I was on my PC earlier but it's the same on my phone now
Might let Paper know in case it might be a bug. I'm not sure if I can grab the seed since the server isn't started and it's a random one (not in server.properties), but here's my level.dat in case it might be extracted from it
do you have your old level.dat? the issue is that once the world is upgraded, the seed is moved from level.dat to world_gen_settings.dat
take a backup, rename this file to world_gen_settings.dat, and stick it in your world/data folder
Thank you!
Something strange is happening
I renamed and threw it in world/data/minecraft
When I start the server it crashes in the same way and the file gets wiped
I checked back with Paper, it looks like this might not be the correct location
I found a world_gen_settings.dat file in a different location (in the screenshots)
Should I provide the file that's there if that's the correct generated one?
wait, what precise filepath did you find it in
(and wtf paper, why make this so complicated)
but yeah, if you found it, just replace that file with the one I send (take a backup of it first)
I'm 90% sure what I sent will still work; exception being if Paper does anything weird to it
It's at this path: world/dimensions/minecraft/overworld/data/minecraft
Thank you I'll be giving that a shot
Looks like it couldn't read the new world_gen_settings.dat file and crashed, produced these crash reports
I've taken a glance at your logs. Here are some potential issues I found!
- It appears Endercon was uninstalled incorrectly. Biomes must be removed from the
level.dat- see/faq Removing Worldgen Packs. (crash-2026-04-06_08.13.05-server.txt) - It appears Endercon was uninstalled incorrectly. Biomes must be removed from the
level.dat- see/faq Removing Worldgen Packs. (crash-2026-04-06_08.13.51-server.txt)
This should be the previous world_gen_settings.dat file if needed (not the one I replaced it with)
ignore this
anyway, I won't be able to edit it for a while, I am currently away from my machine. So curious if you can test something.
Take a backup if you haven't already. Then for every dimension in your world/dimensions folder, find every world_gen_settings.dat file, and replace it with the one I gave you
knowing Paper, they are probably exact duplicates, so all of them have the precisely same issue, and can be fixed with replacing each
if it doesn't work, then I can take a look and edit the files you just sent, once I get back to my machine
I don't think they exist yet for other dimensions, should I replace anyway?
only if they exist
It doesn't look like it, at both of these locations
(same for Nether assuming it's in world_nether/DIM-1/data)
Oh wait, I actually read your logs, it's a different issue now
For some reason the game doesn't like reading Endercon's data, and I'm not sure why
easy fix tho, can do as soon as I get back
No worries take your time thank you, I'll be able to check back later today
Reminder successfully created! I will ping you in 8h with your reminder.
ok, rename this one to world_gen_settings.dat and replace the old one with it
Honestly not sure why your logs are complaining about Endercon, Endercon's data looks perfectly fine, but whatever, I made it see what it is expecting to see
Hey @shrewd briar!
fix
Another crash this time but I believe it's different
oops, that one was completely my bad; was sloppy when fixing the End data
So now I noticed there's a new folder for the nether
It also contains a world_gen_settings.dat file, however none in the_end yet
Should I try replacing the file above in both overworld and nether?
I did just that and it crashed, I think I'm on the right path though, there should probably be one for the_end now and I'll repeat the same
Ok, did the same for the_end. It looks like I just had to wait for it to crash for each dimension so the file is generated for that dimension, and then replace the file for that dimension
We finally have lift off https://mclo.gs/zmacImf
thanks Paper 🙃
but glad it's working now
It looks like all worlds/dimensions have been moved to the same folder, and they're now located here
Thank you very much for the help, much appreciated
Awesome! And it was very helpful for me, as this is the first time I've witnessed a Paper-like server update from 1.21.11 to 26.1
