#help i cant update or reinstall
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Try this.
The installer doesn't have the correct permissions to write to Program Files but winget should either bypass this or use your Application Data folder.
what
oh
If you have important modpacks, back them up.
Press Windows key + R and go to %APPDATA%\ModrinthApp
you can find your modpack folders there
what is an ''important modpacks''
just anything you happened to install onto the app
that you don't want to lose
if you have nothing to lose
uninstall the app with
winget uninstall --source=winget --id=Modrinth.ModrinthApp
and then run the first command again
if it still doesn't work
why is urs diff to mine
because he already has the app installed (but it's outdated and cannot be updated)
open event viewer
and then go to the application logs from earlier
if you see an error show that error
make sure it has the name modrinth in it
(should be in the details at the bottom pane when focusing on the error)
okay so it's not an application error
you could still have the old shortcut
huh strange
modrinth app is installed to program files through winget
there could be left over files in %APPDATA%\ModrinthApp
how?
if you close modrinth (make sure it's completely closed from task manager) and then delete the %APPDATA%\ModrinthApp folder which can be done by typing %APPDATA% in your Windows search and looking for ModrinthApp, delete that. Then launch the Modrinth App again (you will lose all the data).
^^^ it is not very recommended if you have important modpacks but honestly this error cannot be solved more conveniently
Windows key + Shift + S
it opens the screenshot tool
once you capture the region
press ctrl + v to paste it here
no warnings are just for things like outdated libraries and some things not working but can be ignored
errors are for all software on the system
looks like that error is not modrinth-related
(you can ignore it too)
so you can try the other way

okay I have another idea
these are just errors from software throughout the time you've used your system
that's why Event Viewer is useful
you can catch errors you don't see anywhere else
Maybe Modrinth App.exe is already running?
try going back to your Command Prompt window and run taskkill /f /im "Modrinth App.exe" or just end all processes that have that name in Task Manager.
Sometimes background processes might interfere with the installation of some programs.
its not running at all
Okay.
Leave that open or open a new one.
now run cd /d "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads"
then type the full name of the installer file.
it should run the installer.
it might provide logs on what is happening
full name of the insatller file?
whats the installer file modrinth?
if you redownload modrinth you can select where it paths to so you have to just reinstal it and path it to your old modrinth file and it works again. Thats how ive been fixing it atleast
it doesnt let you select it when ur updating for some reason
go to your downloads folder in explorer
show me the name of the installer
huh
there's a new version
0.8.9
download that
tysm sorry about that
alredy have it
okay
you can try this then
open your command prompt
and paste this into there:
"%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\Modrinth App_0.8.9_x64-setup.exe"
assuming the installer is in the downloads folder
it should print out some logs
if it doesn't then obviously it doesn't have logging capabilities
just did that
omds its still saying the same thing
internet download manager doesn't seem to have verbose logging
but I'll keep trying
okay so it installs just fine for me
how about this
let's use my settings
type in "User Account Control Settings" in the start menu search
should see "Change User Account Control settings"
open that
when updating it doesnt let you select the file but if you reinstall and select the same modrinth file it keeps all your packs and worlds
set it to the lowest possible setting
(you can change it back after)
then try installing the app
are u taljing to me?
yeah
alr
turn off user account control
ok
the installer might need access to something that UAC cannot do
but UAC might be restricting it
idk in what world that would happen
but
my system configuration is not to use UAC
anyway
let me know how that goes
yea i have to log into my dads acc for that
it says the administratpr has to do it
it's trying to install to Program Files
i have his pin
okay
dang
yeah cause it's like a security change
it would allow any app to just use the system's admin stuff immediately
so if you turned that on for a second and installed the modrinth app
ohh
it might work
and then you can switch it back
if your dad is tech savvy you can explain to him
he might know how it works
that would in theory work but it might not be caught when updating the app
that's my only personal issue with using a custom directory
thats the defult one
(unless they save the install directory in registry or env variables)
worked for me
thats how ive been updating it
its so needlessly complicated when i can just reinstall and path it thru the old modrinth and it keeps my saves
if anything the path should be C:\Users\<Your Windows Username>\AppData\Roaming\ModrinthApp
or something similar
probably just Modrinth since ModrinthApp is used already
for me?
just as a temporary place to have modrinth
are u talking to me?
yeah
mb
or %localappdata%\modrinth
might be a good directory too
but %appdata%\modrinth would be perfect
cause other apps like Spotify use %appdata%
%APPDATA%\ModrinthApp should contain this stuff
but if you set the installation directory to %APPDATA%\Modrinth
that should work
how would i set the directory to that?
open the installer
when it asks you for the path
put this in
%APPDATA%\Modrinth
if it doesn't allow that
then
go back to your command prompt window and do echo %APPDATA%
it will show you where it is
copy where it is (should say something like C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming
paste that into the installer but add \Modrinth at the end
so it should be C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Modrinth
should i just type installer in my widows search bar or is installer used aa a term?
sorry
you can open the installer from your downloads folder
if you go to C:\Users in file explorer, do you see your account folder? What is it called?
click the empty space in the top bar
and paste this
C:\Users
then show me a screenshot of what that has
or if you recognize your account name
tell me what that is
i can then construct the path for you
yeah
and then replace C:\Program Files\Modrinth App with C:\Users\Zuhay\AppData\Roaming\Modrinth
when you're asked for a location
uninstall before installing probably
if that doesn't work then try again and use Do not uninstall
ill start from the beginning and delete evrthing named modrinth
then ill download it again
okay
delete the C:\Program Files\Modrinth App folder
then delete the C:\Users\Zuhay\AppData\Roaming\ModrinthApp folder
that should delete everything
awesome
