My character died of old age and I immediately got a game over instead of the option to play as either of my children

If you have no one in your house that's a known bug, no great workaround - modding branch might fix this iirc otherwise you can send your save

no they both moved out a while ago, even had their own kids and my founder finally kicks the bucket
