Probably the biggest reason there isn't more pushback for op dinos is that via breeding every Dino is op, and people are just used to that. The only side of the community that pushes for any sort of balance is the pvp community. Which for some reason pve communities have decided to resent and complain about.

technically the p2w stuff was removed before the game released. it was just they didn't change the progression system until 5 months later so it was very very slow. estimates were like 40 hours for a single hero or something.

To move gaming forward people need to be willing to innovate, either in small doses like Ark DLCs or in larger doses like a sequel project

It’s an endless arms race against exploiters and cheaters, and wc lacks the capacity of a large AAA studio (and even THEY have trouble with these things) to combat this. The better play imo is to dump official PvP and let the community run it so they can be more actively moderated

Releasing doesn't make sense, because at most it would be a demo map with a couple of half implemented movement mechanics. Probably not even a single creature. No story. One default weapon maybe. Well, debatably, having too many expositional cutscenes ruins the ambience of a game, and is also a lazier form of story telling by modern game standards.

Not saying there aren't some really well made cutscenes in other games, but for stuff like survival games, I feel like generally the less folks know the better. You make your own story, and in arks case when you get to a certain point of being the one who tries again and stepping into the role of ultimate Survivor, only then does the story really matter.

However, I understand I'm in the minority on this one.

I was under the impression that I referenced LC as a point that WC has developed a workflow for creating expansive cutscenes, and that logic could be expanded upon and used as a primary medium for carrying Ark 2s story. It's hard for me to chastise LC about the length or content of the cutscenes, because I just don't think any of the preludes are really necessary. I had a whole dissertation about how important story elements are spoon fed to us in the intro LC scene, but that's kinda what you were saying is the case for all the story maps these days.

There's a huge difference between one tag cutscene, or a short prelude cutscene and having constant cutscenes for like... every quest or whatever, and the infrastructure for visual media presentation that was setup with LC is considerably different than all but like one other cutscene in all of ark, and they go pretty hard on it. I don't blame them, it's expensive to set that stuff up. I didn't accuse LC of abusing the cutscenes like I fear for Ark 2, but there is definitely a greater presence from the cutscenes of that DLC. It was kind of a big selling point for it. My argument was that they would take their new systems for LC cutscenes and become over reliant on them in the new game under the guise of some massive success from LC.

Elaborating more on sense based skills for creatures could be a fairly viable means of trying to balance natural disguise based mechanics.

It'd also be easier if they locked the camera to first person instead of third too if you wanted to try and cater more to vision based limitations. Third person is too forgiving when it comes to visual acuity, so we kinda already know that ain't an option.

I find it interesting going back to 2015 versions of Ark, and observing the difficulty of obtaining them compared to today.
A time where 100 c4 was a big deal, vs today where your entire tribe can shoot rockets into the air 24/7 and not care.

I kinda wish it would be difficult to obtain such items again if in Ark 2 as well.

Well, if it's ever just farm the resources, stick em in an inventory, and hit a button to get tons of things, then ammunition bloat will always be a problem. Originally ark tried to counter this by making it a multi station process, but once the resources became easier to get after 4x the original rates, new maps with more accessible resource placement, and new creatures that have specialized farming attributes the multi station method just becomes a tedious inconvenience that can be solved by building more and more stations and adding a bot or recruiting less skilled/complacent tribemembers to hit E for you.

Something that would interesting, and probably still tedious, would be to add some sort of player input through the crafting process. Maybe not for every item, but maybe some more of the valuable items like explosives. Maybe there's some sort of mouse swipe or whatever that sets a primer or something. Makes things tedious, but can also be delegated out, and slows things down. Of course none of that matters if items can just be duped.

We've seen a bunch of games recently pop up where folks disassemble furniture or fix appliances. I could see how there's a level of catharsis in those types of game play elements. Folks that are just making small bits of explosives probably wouldnt mind the process, but it would definitely be hard to over produce without delegating the task out, and peeps are probably less inclined to buy into that servant role.

Might be more feasible with component based crafting for gear - hopefully a revamp/removal of the blueprint system and subsequently the need to craft 1000+ of the same gear pieces for stats - having a few crafting inputs for creation would help make the gear feel more meaningful than just Flak Chestpiece #6829

For sure maybe the individual components can be crafted as they are in ASE/ASA, but then some assembly is required on the players part for more advanced weapons or explosives. Maybe even have a system where pieces can be assembled incorrectly, and they can fail during use. Imagine you go to place an IED and it goes off in your face because of your lazy tribemate, or you chest piece breaks in a quarter of the expected dura.

Actually kind of adds a whole method of slowing tons of things down in the game while adding additional gameplay interactions. Die hard pvper's would hate it though. Folks in the middle would probably find it alright.

Honestly, crafting skill should be an amplification of some sort of assembly process instead of just random chance. A skilled woodworker may not make their best piece every time, but even the worst piece will probably still be like 30% better than someone with no skill assuming literally everything went wrong in the process.

One's not a random addition applicable to any craftable item, and the other is a more or less cumulative flat or gated rate dependent on the type of item your crafting and the skills you've invested in? That doesn't really solve the whole respec for a day issue, but maybe the crafted skill can provide a boost to weapon proficiency.

I guess that depends on what they're idea of component based crafting entails. For things like ammunition putting parts together is all you really need. For armor, I don't know, I think's kind of cool to have some skill dependency even if it's not something a player specs in to that can boost quality. Adds some variety, well at least in pvp.

I understand it's quite difficult to balance quantifiable crafting skill with what's supposed to be the main focus of gameplay, and also with what's fun. However, it was just an idea to the point of mass explosives being too easy to obtain.

I don't think Ark works well with Megatribes though, Ark is superbly more balanced in a small tribes setting -- if you can address the offline raiding issue

It would attract people from other games too (like Rust) if officials weren't so inherently stupid

even Rust would not survive if it was a group size of 100 people on the same server, it's lame / boring

also the PvE side is dreadful in a megatribe, 99% of the game is removed as opposed to what a small group experiences from Ark. Idk, a lot they could do for Ark 2

My big, fat, dumb, stinky, stupid opinion would be to change all official servers to online limits as opposed to total slots or server cap. Locking accounts to a tribe for cross server travel is also something to consider, but I know that takes away a bit of fun.

WC isn't really interested in trying to punish account sharing, but they can at least try to dissuade folks from doing it as opposed to rewarding it. I also think there's some longer term benefits for online limits when it comes to shops and cheaters, but that requires additional checks that nobody cares about and detracts from immersion.

Thankfully none of us are developing the game. So we get dealt, what we get dealt. And we'll like it...

Online limits like smalls can have however many players in a tribe (or add a limit here like 12 or whatever for that mode), but only 6 folks could ever be online at one time. Maybe 70 man, you have an online limit of 45 or something with as many folks in the tribe as you want.

I think it only really works if your account gets linked to the tribe. Maybe even some sort of hardware link ideally as intrusive as that sounds.

Yeah, it's more the teaming thing that stops any sort of programmatic prevention to mega tribes. Like 0in small tribes for example, you have tribes of 100 or 200 people, but "organized" enough to not technically break rules. There is not really any coding strategy to prevent that, and simply due to the long term nature of ark it leads to wanting bigger groups. Rust can get away from it because there are a million servers and they wipe weekly or biweekly. That's why you don't have tribes as big there. Without really active moderation teams (think 24/7 online watching everyone) stuff like that is really hard. Now if ark were to hire some DoD analysts maybe, but it's not likely to ever be solved.

It is why I would be heavily interested in a gamemode for Ark 2 that is akin to Ironman mode in OSRS, but with tribe related content. Ie dinos that can only be bred within your own tribe line, or perhaps BPs only craftable by your tribe.

Ranged in typical Souls games is sub-par for sure as a balance decision, some games you can almost outrun arrows lol, but I doubt Ark2 would take that approach

Really they add all this TLC for dinos, but think the last time half the weapons got a TLC -- slingshot, bows, shotguns (failing first shot always), minigun turret/assault rifles not landing most of their shots etc

Honestly, they should just remove guns from ark 2. Same with swords and shields. Players really shouldn't be able to shoot creatures with crossbows either. Actually, taming creatures is kind of op, should probably cut that too, but then you'd have folks aggroing creatures to other players bases, so WC really needs to make sure they prevent players from building bases.

I wasn't around when ASE came out, but even the Time Capsule version of Ark seems like it was tremendously different to what they had intended for Ark at first? Tooltips like 'Rare resources Obsidian and Crystal can be found in caves', or going to the ocean for pearls/oil etc.

Frogs for cementing paste, and penguins for Organic polymer seems to make explosives like 10x easier to get, even by the Time Capsule date (Dec 2015).

So the devs did have some sort of balance in mind at Ark launch, just powercreeps happen way too often

I'm sure there's some sort of compromise with variable types of damage. Instead of bullets just dealing a flat damage with armor adjustment, maybe there's a chances that bullets can graze arteries and cause bleeding, or loss of mobility in certain limbs. Things that aren't solely effected by health. Harder to program, but more dynamic than just breed for HP and win the game.

A large part of this was because there was no real good way of getting stone aside from picking it by hand. Harvesting nodes was trash not only were they 1/4 of the rates, but the stone node yield had to be buffed.

Before the Stego TLC you have a hard time actually soaking Tek turrets -- trike/reaper to soak a handful with very precise positioning, or a box racer with head up (lots of damage + metal box breaks sometimes from turrets).
Then stego TLC came out and suddenly stego can basically run into 100 turrets at most angles.

I was speaking purely about base stats but you’re absolutely right that with saddles and I’d argue support like pigs/owls/etc it’s likely practically much higher. Toss in cryopods so you can rotate them out instantly and it’s even worse

It definitely doesnt lend to a casual pvp. And due to permanence of servers they can't make it so that people of similar resource are paired agaisnt each other like you would get with a normal lobby based pvp scenario. Rust is more balanced since a bow can still win fights with guns with enough skill and luck.

That was the messiest DLC Ark has ever done I am sure.
Meks shooting rockets freely at bases, Titans casually wiping capped bases with 300 turrets (and meshing damaging cave bases), manas 1 shotting players of any gear + autolooting through bases/forcefields etc.

I am still curious to this day what happened, was it Wildcard? The true start of Snail Games shennanigans? I don't know.

Also it's not even mutated stegos per say causing problems, it's the healing/saddles/rotating/ease of obtaining/brainless soaking method etc. Like when Gen2 launched and I casually solo soaked 100 capped turrets cycling a few 30k health stegos and AoE healing them. Bases should be nearly unraidable without prep or coordination in Ark 2

I get some creatures (especially Araneo, as basically was useless since release) need TLC, but I disagree that every dino should have so much going for it. I mean it seems pretty obvious this point that every dino in Ark 2 will have like 10 different abilities.

Consider the Anglerfish, a fair TLC was to allow it to gather pearls. An ASA TLC would give it 6 more abilities, along with increased stats/mobility etc, it's too much IMO
