Killing a rex with a spear in a survival game is dumb
what would even be the point in making a complex weapon crafting system if it doesnt even work because "hehe dino hab thick skin"
a rex could easily choke on a spear if it went down the wrong way
might take a while to die but it would be very uncomfortable for it
PvP? Small dinos?
will crush damage from dinos standing on you be more important? since you're meant to be all parkour and stuff
making an extremely complex weapon system, as well as an intricate combat system involving combos, specials, and dodges completely redundant because "dino big" is dumb
its a huge waste of time and not really fair to boot
Would it still be dumb if you couldn't kill a boss doing it?
besides, it hardly matters how thick a rexes skin is if I take my steel toothpick of a pike and shove it down its throat or through the roof of its mouth and into its brain, realistically speaking
yes it would be extremely dumb if I couldnt kill a boss
the point of a boss existing is to challenge the player
Yeah your opinion is now worthless lol
Anime pfps bruh I stg š
your existence is the equivalent of blue light
everyone around you might be looking at you, but by doing so they are killing their own eyesight
besides, you have a default pfp so you cant talk
Realistically speaking: you'd lose your hand lol
who said I'd be stabbing the spear in and not throwing it?
blue light isn't harmful?
shhh, technically it isnt, no
but its still a common myth that it is
and placebo can go a long way
You? Read your own message lmao
my message isnt saying my hand is attached to the spear
a shove is a strong push
still, doesnt mean my hand is in range to be bit
especially since realistically speaking, spears tend to be quite a bit longer than your body
tf does that have to do with anything?
š¤¦āāļø
the brain of a creature is typically between and slightly behind the eyes
an area perfectly reachable by impaling the roof of an animals mouth at an angle
and technically speaking, it would be pretty hard to impale a rex through its nose from its mouth with a spear one would think, considering the length would make it hard to thrust upward, even if the rex was frozen in place with its mouth open
Yeah I wanna see you get to that angle in the first place lmao
it wouldnt be that hard
š¤£
you'd just have to angle the throw slightly up from the back of the mouth
certainly easier to pull off than stabbing it through the nose
Bruh I stg I'm gonna suffocate š
you have fun with that
u seem annoying ngl
What am I reading
Birdwoman correct me if Iām mistaken but you can kill an ark 1 rex with a pike with capped flak. Is that correct?
This dude CAN'T read and it's funny af
apparently aiming a throw slightly up from the back of a creatures mouth is too hard
bruh you dont even need capped flak
You got lost in details. Letās circle back to actual game design imo
Yeah, and?
im on eves side ngl
I never said arks melee combat was good lol
Birdwoman had a valid point here that I agree with 100%. Which is that a rex should be a major threat that you should be heavily discouraged from engaging without proper preparation
loll š¤£š¤£
no eve is right
Thereās a valid argument that certain creatures should be near impossible to kill on foot. Monster hunter has average hunt times of 15-30 minutes. For any ark creature to take that long itās basically saying āthis isnāt feasibleā
okay, then returning to my original statements
bosses are meant to challenge the player
and it is completely pointless to spend all that time designing a complex combo system, dodges, as well as going far enough to make weapons extremely flexible in their designs... only for all of it to be completely redundant because "hehe dino skin be mega thiccc"
FRRRRR
Really depends, especially for ark, on what the style of preparations are deemed āacceptableā prior to a challenge
true
I think being able to solo (no tames) the equivalent of an alpha broodmother is stupid
even if dino skin thickness was a thing, with how modular the weapon is, you should be able to make a blade that can counter that
Not to this guy lol
However, I agree that should you be at the correct point of game progress, that skill should allow you to succeed with perhaps less preparation than someone whoās less skilled
š
yeah but we are talking about a rex
which is definitely not the equivalent of that
Thereās a āwindowā where skill can compensate for a lack of preparation, but outside that you should feel like a certain challenge is untenable
Iād say that a rex on foot is about the limit. I think if itās a really challenging and satisfying fight you could swing a foot player against a rex, but it would be rex favored
But a bronto? You should be boned if you try to foot player solo a bronto down
I agree with that
PvE should have moments where a player at any (normal, since some people are nuts) skill level is deterred or blocked from doing something without adequate progressā¦because otherwise the gameās longevity and progress structure collapses
unles you can somehow get on the brontos back, basically everything it does should be able to one shot you
Iām not even speaking one shots, you should do squat to a bronto in return on foot
Even if it doesnāt one shot you, the knowledge that you can barely scratch this massive animal should properly deter players from fighting it unprepared
I agree with that shifter, but arkII does have a different loop than arkI, considering damage in general will be more meaningful, even to tames
ontop of that, getting raided by aratai as well as their tames
while I agree skill can only go so far, being able to 1v1 anything not miniboss or above (assuming you have appropriately prepared equipment, of course) I dont think would really affect the games longevity, and if anything would probably add to it because of the competition it would provide
Well thatās the part you omitted there: appropriate equipment
though to be fair, Im speaking entirely from the perspective of a 1v1, which lets be honest, isnt likely to happen regardless
Youāll likely be forced to consider 1v1 fights against all sorts of scenarios as an ark 2 player. The question is which ones should or shouldnāt be worth taking
actually no, I did bring up equipment rather early on, I just didnt emphasize it because I figured that would be a given
I was never saying you should be able to take on a rex with a bundle of that and stones
What excites me about ark 2 is that thereās two types of progression: game progression via levels and gear and player progression as you learn the AI and the world and how it works
mhmm
Thatās true, although imo ādecentā gear is a bit vague for my tastes lol
thats fair
since we have no idea how arkII will be balanced, I figured being on the vague side would be better until we see more
I was looking for a āearly/mid/late gameā comment rather than a specific, cause thatās totally true
because lets be honest, we have no clue what even classifies as appropriate gear
or even decent gear really
for all we know, something like obsidian could be extremely high end for burst damage due to the extreme sharpness obsidian has when properly knapped
Imo ādecentā is a terrible term for describing anything with a linear progression system, since decent early game gear is often awful end game gear lol
You know obsidian is brittle AF right?
I dont think arkII will have a linear progression system
It will
hence why I said "burst damage"
durability doesnt matter if you are only looking to inflict a high amount of damage within a certain moment
The question is how linear? Ark 1 was extremely linear but ark 2 has hinted at a lot more horizontal progression
Im hoping arkIIs progression will be less gear related and more skill related
It does though because your weapon would break on the enemy and barely if even damage them
so you'd be encouraged to make gear that compliments your survivors "build"
Iām fine with gear, although ark 1 flak is kinda dumb lol. I wish there was more armor that offered similar progression and other side benefits though so you could justify different loadouts
even if the weapon breaks, if it does the high amount of damage it was meant to, then its purpose is served
Itās an interesting idea to give a weapon the brittle debuff to justify perhaps a stronger buff of some sort
yeah, which obsidian would be perfect for
I could imagine obsidian knives doing extra damage but having a higher chance of breaking or something
That would be very new to ark though, a trade off system of buffs and debuffs for components rather than just a buff system
Bruh doesn't even understand what was said š
I'd love to see different blade types
like, maybe straight blades as your standard blade, and like serrated blades for bleeding and other status ailments
I do think obsidian knives and tools had use, even if you couldnāt use them for arrowheads and spears
I mean it's new game. And having an actual system behind melee is new too so.
They were used for surgery
Right, so in a pinch you could stab something with one, even if it rendered it useless after because it broke
its a video game, no way in hell obsidian breaks and does no damage, that just wouldnt be good game design
if obsidian breaks after one hit though, then single use arrows could be a great use for it tbh
They were only useful with very delicate procedures. Using almost any force would damage or shatter the tool.
I mean minecraft tinkers construct actually had certain components make your tools and weapons useless
tinkers is kind of how I imagine arks modular crafting will be like
Itās a possible way to think about it. But itās certainly not the only wayā¦itās something that Iām interested to see if we get a UI teaser at extra life
you prepare certain parts of your weapon this way or that, then bring them all together in this final bench with different parts giving your weapon different benefits and drawbacks
What I think is interesting about tinkers is that materials each had a set trait that was then applied to the tool part. An interesting alternative is if the material did something different based on what part it was made into
I also like how modular crafting will also be cosmetic
makes me want some form of glamor you can put on your weapon (and maybe your outfit as well) for aesthetic purposes... probably in pve only modes since that would be pretty abusable for pvp
I think thereās wiggle room for cosmeticsā¦but yea if itās too much it can be used to mask things in a way I see as harmful for PvP
hence the last part of the suggestion
How would a cosmetic hurt pvp lol, just don't make it invisible and it'll be fine.
If for example you see a player holding out a crappy looking sword skin on top of a really good sword you may mistakenly assume theyāre low gear. As an example
running around in end game gear glamored to look beach boby
it could be a one use weapon
yeah we talked about obsidian being brittle
Eh, just don't be greedy lol.
but like I said, low durability doesnt matter as long as the weapon can serve its purpose as a spur of the moment burst
Tbh it could just be a terrible option that acts as a last resort
Thatās still technically a niche a weapon type could fill
or it could be an early game "oh shit" way of doing late game damage with high upkeep cost
Iām very curious about the gap between early vs late game
only really useful as a fallback if you find yourself in some unexpected trouble
but not practical in every day use
I am as well shifter
as I said earlier, Im hoping late game will be mostly skill/weapon synergy, rather than getting hard carried by your armor like in arkI
I want late game to be worse in comparison to the environment (than ark 1)
The damage on your weapons matter just as much though?
which is why I propose obsidian to be an early game fallback rather than a lategame material
since having burst that can outclass boss caliber gear would be pretty bad
If you have prim weapons and a capped suit you might as well be commiting suicide if you're tryna fight someone
in arkI the damage on your weapon hardly matters if you have armor so good that 90% of the ark does 0 damage
Right but thatās a thing that doesnāt have to be strictly true in ark 2
The gap between the ark 2 equivalent of a spear and a tek rifle doesnāt need to be so large
and anyway, Im talking in the sense of pve, not pvp
we cant even begin to talk about pvp until we see what the combo system is like
Amazing that PvE isn't very dangerous in a PvP game isn't it?
because I feel like skill will be what mostly matters in arkII pvp
doesnt matter how good your gear is if you cant hit your enemy
Itās an ark 1 mistake that can be rectified in ark 2
Given 50+% of players for ark 1 play PvE, itās not a bad time to go ahead and adjust that mode to be more difficult and recognize youāre making a PvE and PvP experience
Im curious if arks dodge roll will be an iframe or merely just a gap opener/closer
Bro everytime I look at PvE servers to see if that numbers true every single PvE server is dead af
because going either way changes quite a bit how combat will be done
Itās unofficial and SP that carry PvE, because official PvE has almost no appeal
bruh you are on xbox, arent all servers there dead af?
Shouldn't be I-frames
isnt the dark souls dodge iframes though?
Unofficial dead af too bro
Yeah
True, Iām also speaking only for what Iāve seen on PC, idk if Xbox is somehow way different
pc unofficial is entirely different from xbone official, with us having mods and all
having mods on console for arkII will be interesting
On steam can you see servers that have mods you don't and then if you try and join it tells you what mods you're missing?
Either way, the PvE could be made tougher than it is in ark 1 and benefit both modes
It usually auto downloads the missing mods
Yeah
Would make the games longevity better if it was harder to advance because there'd be an actual threat to stop you
pve loses a lot of risk at lvl 35 when you tame a pteradon and just fly
mods are the main thing carrying ark I imagine, since a fair amount of popular mod stuff does end up eventually being added to the game
I think it would make PvP more interesting to watch too if both sides sometimes had to deal with PvE. Like if an Aratai raid happened in the middle of a big PvP fight
Bro if a wild rex showed up in the middle of a fight it'd just get targeted and die instantly by whatever side it's attacking
Well yes because thatās ark 1 creaturesā¦basically walking meat
It'd eat 30 arrows in 3 seconds
If we're talking a big fight at least. A small fight would just disperse probably.
I guess it depends on Aratai raids being more than just āa bunch of rexesā since agree theyād just get wrecked lol
the general thoughts of flight for arkII
no wyverns (I personally think wyverns are fine as long as their breath attacks get entirely reworked, no constantly ticking damage attacks or long range balls)
fliers should be easy to lame if their wings are struck, making them quite dangerous to use... as well as have a crashing mechanic if you land wrong
fliers should be a late midgame to early lategame tame type at the earliest, requiring at least a few days of effort and preparation
I do hope to see glider suits expanded
I'd love to have a squirrel suit, for example... lets say an armor piece that sacrifices all forms of defense (outside of insultation, since if you are gliding you'll need to be insulated or you could literally freeze to death due to wind chill, depending on your altitude and speed) to enhance your mobility and allow bursts of gliding, probably based off stamina usage
Port-a maewing?
Aratai raids could progressively get difficult either by you winning against them, days passing ( similar to the forest ) or the game detects your progress and compares and gives them equal loot/tames
This ain't 7 days to die lol
like I've long said
pvp should be a spice in arkIIs gameplay, not the main focus... its much easier to make pve threats actually significant if they are the games main focus
idk even know what that is
It's a pretty good game
its a zombie survival game
fun with friends, but kind of stressful solo since it isnt the kind of game you want to be wasting time in
Yeah
like stat wise or different enemy types
New enemies show up
ah
every 7 days your base gets attacked by a massive horde
and with each concurrent week zombies get stronger and each horde night is stronger than the last
sounds very similar to the forest
eh, kind of
I dont really like the forest much because the game overly relies on the jumpscare "horror" element to make itself relevant, and is rather boring once you get over it
Yeah lol I was gonna say that too
Yeah, game gets really easy once you realize enemy patterns
yeah no, something like that in ark would be terrible
I want dodge backflips in arkII
and if the game doesnt have one by default, I might try to pick up modding to add them in
All you seem to want most the time is over the top crap that wouldn't fit the game
all you seem to want is a game more basic than your profile picture
You have an anime PFP lmao
You can't talk
I want a game that has features that don't trivialize
you dont even have a pfp, you are in no position to criticize
making something flashy does not make it trivial, it just makes it fun to look at
You have an anime PFP and banner kid, you're in no position to argue anything.
Wingsuit?
besides, we are literally crashed on an alien planet, and special moves have been confirmed combat-wise
so a dodge backflip isnt even all that out of place
well you'd have to get high enough to glide with the wingsuit in the firstplace
its hardly trivializing anything considering we can straight up climb anyway, and swing physics are confirmed, which will most likely apply primarily to grappling hooks
You know there's vines irl right?
yeah, but I doubt vines will be everywhere
And braches aren't stiff
And they could mean you swing your character and not just an object
much less vines being common enough to justify adding swing physics
and I highly doubt we'd swing on branches
oh sure swinging your entire character is fine
but not a dodge backflip smh
This dudes never swung off a branch when he was young
its less it being realistic and more the issues coding-wise that would involve'
as well as having to have tree models with branches all animated for swinging
and then those branches having to be rendered in their swing animation for everyone in the area rendering it as well
How does everything you say get worse every sentence?
how is all that copium you taking on a daily basis hitting?
Idk you're the one with dogshit opinions you tell me?
considering your main rebukes towards me are calling me invalid, ridiculing my icon, and just calling me bad without actually giving me proper reasoning why what I say isnt bad beyond "its bad and Im obviously right because pvp"
you must be on a hell of a lot of copium
and frankly its making conversing with you rather tedious
But you're the one who brought up pfps? At least remember how the conversation went beforehand lmao
no that was definitely you
Scroll up my guy lmao
7 days to die?
Yes

I scrolled up
and it was most definitely you
Erm, cherry picking?
Move along please
that is not cherry picking, you very clearly started the whole pfp thing ._.
and okay country
š¤¦āāļø
Im hoping arkII will have dual blades in some shape or form
I love short swords and I dont see them enough in games
That's cause wielding two swords isn't very useful
depends on how its done, and the situation
it could be pretty useful in arkII where it is likely you'll be dealing with more than one threat, and since you can dodge, why have a shield?
cant take damage if the enemy is dead, is my perspective on things
Because having both option is probably better
well realstically, a shield sturdy enough to handle an attack from a dino would be quite cumbersome to wield and would make moving awkward and hard
And realistically trying to dodge roll over and over would be tiresome and get you killed
and since you will be dealing with multiple enemies more often than not, the shield would just leave you exposed from behind
So would trying to fight a dino with melee
doesnt make my second point any less valid though
Turn around?
I'd be surprised if using a shield in arkII didnt incur some form of movement penalty, because otherwise it would just be too strong
Your back is always exposed lol
ah yes, and then the side you were just defending is now exposed, great solution
Most games with shields have no movement penalty and they're usually just fine
most games with shields also dont have dark souls styled combat
Dark souls has no penalty either lmao
That's cause you're fighting multiple enemies and will always be at the disadvantage
anyway, the point I am trying to make is shields only really excel in defending from one direction
Woah, it's almost like that what a shield is for.
which in a game like ark where you can easily be surrounded, I see shields as entirely pointless because there is no way you are defending all of that and also being able to reliably attack at the same time without being left wide open
Not having a shield in ark 1 rn is suicide if you're suit pvping
hence why I'd prefer the dual wielding approach where I forgo defense entirely in favor of dodging, so I can be proactive about attacking instead of reactive
thats arkI
Im talking about arkII
in arkII a shield isnt your only form of defense
seeing a reposte added to arkII would be pretty funny
but I doubt it would happen
Your preference is not a good idea realistically, that's why almost no dual wielded weapons were used in real life. They're a niche weapon that's outperformed by most other options.
Especially considering that weapons light enough to hold two of usually aren't very powerful. And people wear armor.
why is real life being brought into this?
I said in games
Because realism is prevalent to a degree in everything
yes, but realism should be treated as a suggestion instead of an absolute rule imo
psuedo realism basically
especially in a game where we are crash landed on an alien planet with dinos everywhere
What does that have to do with anything?
idk you're the one who brought up realism
Okay but what does us being on an alien planet have to do with how realistic things should be
when I was speaking realistically, I meant realistic in terms of what the game should be, not quite realistically as in real life
what doesnt it have to do with it?
Maybe the fact that aliens are most likely out there and that anything could be made with genetics?
yeah aliens are likely out there
but the odds of us crashing on a planet that is perfectly habitable is quite slim
People are always like "this game doesn't have to be realistic cause there's aliens" like bruh
as well as the eden ring "surviving" the crash in a well enough condition to be operational to the point of performing its function of maintaining an ecosystem
You are aware that the ship was looking for a habitable planet?
yes I am, hence why I said "perfectly" habitable
And? What if life can only exist the way it is on earth?
Maybe that's why it's so hard to find
maybe the planet has freaky acid rain weather
maybe the planets so big its gravity would literally crush us
hell, maybe the planet has the wrong oxygen content and we either suffocate in its atmosphere or die of oxygen poisoning
Then the spaceship wouldn't put us there?
maybe, or maybe not, Im just saying the odds of finding a planet thats perfectly compatible is quite slim
Yeah and the ship was checking for planets for God knows how long
slimmer still is the eden ring surviving its crash in a functional state after being literally torn off the lifeboat
You know the ring dropped survivors onto the planet in pods right?
did it though? it was torn off the lifeboat remember?
And the ring was made of extremely advanced technology from people who are a space faring civilization
yeah, but again the ring was torn off the lifeboat after it got blown up due to some element infused weirdo taking it over
You'd think that there'd be safety lines so that a crash wouldn't always be 100% lethal
yeah, but thats assuming they planned for the the ring to have its own landing operation separate from the life boat, which is slime
and there's still the whole being torn off the lifeboat thing
I'd be surprised if the ring survived being torn off without some damage
Okay and? It's humanity's last bastion you think they wouldn't have everything they can think of to ensure survival?
I mean if they did, then rockwell wouldnt have taken over the ship to such an extent that eradicating him blew the ship apart
Who would think that someone would infuse element into themselves and teleport into the ship and take it over
Canāt do this without regular wipesā¦since the world will outscale new players
who would think the eden ring would be torn off the life boat by an explosion?
That's far more probable than the last thing lmao
that eden ring wasnt even disengaged before hand, it was straight up ripped off
if they did prepare for that eventuality, then it would have some sort of mechanism that would allow for a clean separation
What if there was an asteroid?
so what if there was? that doesnt change the fact that the eden ring was ripped off
And? You're arguing over some useless bullshit.
ā¦yāall are being silly again and I wasnāt even gone that long
idk apparnetly being on an alien planet means the game has to be hyper realistic
Lmaooooo
Dual blades would be fine if they added to combat. Iād prefer the choice of two handed claymore vs sword and shield, but realistically having two hands to equip weapons/shields is pretty common, so why not have two swords? As long as I can run dual shield bash builds
and Im pulling birds leg because the are annoying
a claymore or a falchion would be pretty neat to see
I'm legit laughing at every message you send
you have fun with that
I am lol
good
get a room
and letās keep it about game design
What happen
Some tasty talk about weapons and difficulty scaling (IE PvE being harder at all points of the game)
a lot
I like all the difficulties in one map
idk apparently it doesnt matter if arkII is on an alien planet, game needs to be super hyper realistic because yes
Loool still can't read
Everyone should be allowed to suffer
Some of us are doing it right now š
because, you know, being on an alien planet doesnt mean we can take some creative freedom with game mechanics and systems
Even if they dont think they want to
Waiting for some news be like this
shhh didnt you know most of the arks playerbase is masochistic?
why else would they spend weeks raising dinos only to lose them five seconds later
I want everyone to know suffering
Everyone will be wiped
Everywhere
Only savior is godmode
Yeah I realized after thinking and that I entirely forgot about servers
and then the godmode peeps get banned for hacking
If most people play PvE then that's not the case
I mean back when gigas raged after falling five inches, that was very much the case
Just dismount?
doesnt change that gigas raged too easily
When cliff not an issue anymore š
If your giga rages in your base then ur a bob lol
Rip cliff danger will be missed
I hope the dismount thing in arkII ends up making your character rebound and the get send flying while ragdolling just for trying to abuse the system
would be funny
Yeah
Ya know what Iām good with NOT seeing is auto dismount attacks and stun locks
In ark 1 regional difficulty was mainly created by what creatures were there. What do you think about instead making it creature/ aratai level along with region specific creatures.
With the possibility for adaptive scaling depending on certain factors
I think stuns and dismounts provide a good mechanic for combat
Not the way the devs implemented them in the first game
When does ARK 2 drop?
Between january 1st 20223 and December 31st 2023
No, it provides annoyance
Refer to jellyfish and eels
@lime forge name 1 good creature to fight in ark that has dismount
Environmental hazards like radiation
And (as much as I don't want to say it) the carnivore plants from genesis 2
yo
I wouldve loved to have something stronger as a carnivorous plant we could use for base defense
We don't have any sarlacc pit like creatures yet.
Would've been great if the Venus-Flytraps where growable that're on Genesis-2
Scrapped
is ark going to be XBOX only? NOT PC? first release? š¦
It has a steam page
I know, I was looking forward to it originally
Yeah......
Microsoft exclusive, typically means pc and xbox
It's not even Microsoft exclusive, it wouldn't be on steam then.
It's just not coming to PS since it's coming out in early-access
They stated it's a microsoft exclusive when they announced it, right?
I don't believe so?
Cause a Microsoft exclusive would mean Xbox and Windows store only, no?
It was announced as a microsoft exclusive. Slated for initially release on xbox series x/s and later PC
Odd.
In the first trailer?
In the original survive the ark post, at the game awards in 2020, and the second trailer was during the xbox exclusive showcase.
For exclusive releasing in the next 12 month
Hmm, odd.
Cause i don't believe it's an exclusive anymore.
Cause steam isn't a Microsoft platform.
Any recent news about the game?
not since june 12
Extra life is november 5th
its on steam arleady
That makes tames weaker it wouldnt be good
I think staggers are ok, but stuns are miserable. Especially if they can be chained into stun locks that make you want to uninstall
Yea dont let ark-combat turn into overwatch with mounts
the steam page is literally pinned in this channel
staggers? sure
stuns? hell no
Anybody know if Ark 2 will be crossplay between Steam and Xbox/Microsoft versions?
i'm curious on how this will run on normal computers when compared to how current ark runs on the average gaming pc.
"See foliage react convincingly to passing wildlife, water flow downstream around obstacles, volumetric stormclouds, localized weather systems, smoke and particles affected by physical forces, and much more! Fundamental advancement of lighting systems enables a more photorealistic day-night cycle, generating real-time ambient lighting & shadows within both natural and player-constructed environments!" has me concerned in particularly ;-; ark isn't exactly renowned for being a good running game so i'm hoping that this has been taken into consideration and settings have a lot of options to help with this otherwise i fear that the playerbase is gonna be pretty limited to people who have crazy good pc's
That is a concern I have too. I got strong-ish laptop but it's far from the best
I for one am glad it won't be held back by previous-gen consoles, but I do hope as far as PC-wise it doesn't require like the best, newest, NASA-tier computer
But I don't think that'll be the case like it was with Ark one early on, since it's a bit less indie and a bit more big-name-production these days
As long as it isnāt hard shackled like rise was because of the switch Iām already feeling better
There's so many games that get held back/lose features that could've been great simply because they want to incude last-gen and/or weaker platforms, and it's sad. BotW was going to have a lot more, but they wanted to put it on the Wii-U so they toned it back a bit (and we lost some really interesting features because of it, too)
IMO, these games should go down how Ark 1 did, and release to the major platforms that have the power behind them, then go back and work it out for the others if they want (like they did with the Switch and mobile versions of Ark 1)
Will ark 2 have proper Linux support?
Will run better for sure
Ark at the moment is so unoptimized it's embarrassing that it was even released for £45 in that state
But it still performs better than rust lol
But the fps stability is bad. There are things that influence the framerate way more than others
I think what wildcard needs to work on is the foliage and grass, shit like that
Cranking up ground clutter density decreases the fps around the same amount as view distance
foliage and ground clutter is gonna need to be looked at again, especially if people are expected to use it to hide from wildlife
oh wait this exist
Yea
I feel like wildcard should open an application form for community members for early access
Because I feel like community input would be the best
Obv a very small amount of people but it would help with the development I think
Is ark 2 coming to mobile?
You would need one really powerful phone then
NASA phone
.
that's called early access
if it is, it'll be like ark mobile...a totally different experience with the same name
there are different types of early access
"simultaneously onĀ Steam Early AccessĀ and as a console launch exclusive forĀ Xbox Series X|S and with Xbox and PC Game Pass on Game Preview." For those who dont read the pins
I'm betting WC has closed QC tests with people, but if I were them I wouldn't dare do so with this community. Way too risky
uh yes, they do have a qa team
it will most likely ironically run better than ark ever did
the main reason why ark runs like shit is because it was made like shit
the "foundation" of arks coding was made in just 7 months by 9 people
even AAA studios take years to make their foundation of coding for games
and wildcard was an indie studio at the time
still kind of is tbh, maybe AA at the most
They're defiantly more AA now then Indie.
They're actually a full blown company now.
Just not as big as others
wait wtf how long has this been a thing
since december 2020 when it was announced at the game awards alongside the animated series
id have to beat ark the island before i play this
i might have it done by the time it realeases
Two years
you still got at the fastest 5 months
i had no idea this was a thing thats weird
Give us some leaks or game play .For the love of God Happy birthday Cedric
Is it a leak if it was intended?
@blissful perch where you see this at ?
The pins of this chat (click the pin)
97 days will pass in the blink of an eye
It better have tornados I can ride and hurricanes that flood our beach houses
I just learned that Multiversus has lines for every single character to wish you a happy-birthday when the day comes.
@cunning talon Please, do this with Vin-Diesel in ARK-2.
I'd laugh and appreciate the cherry on top of characters wished you a happy-birthday.
what happend with Bluestone?
He does not work for WC anymore.
Wait, bluestone is gone?
He was the most engaging too
some leaves and more joins in, hopefully the next dev will be as good as bluestone
not to be that guy but bluestone wasn't a dev
unclear. he is no longer with WC, nor is he in this server anymore
Damn, we didn't get a goodbye or nothin
it might've been legal issues or smthn and he didn't have time? idk
He was a freelance CM
Kind of did.
His last message was "Bluestone was never real" then left
He also could've left on his own.
Might've gotten to stressed or annoyed over getting constantly harrassed.
I didn't see it, but that still doesn't explain what happened either way
His twitter was also deleted
That's really strange, tbh the whole situation is strange and I want answers
Same
I think it's either a joke, or he wanted to retire.
There'd be no reason to delete his twitter.
But it's probably lost to the aether why it happened in the first place
He seemed to enjoy chatting here.
Correction: No reason 'unless' he's either making a new account, or he's retiring and wants no one to message him anymore and harrass him.
If everyone changed their name to bluestone, we might get answers lol
'True'
Their discord account still exists, so I don't see how that would reduce the harassing messages being sent to them (if that was in fact the reason they left, because if someone wants to harass you they will try every avenue, trust me)
Cant message someone if you dont share a discord, buuuuttttt you could just block someone, so I agree
I can message him...
He set his discord to only allow messages from friends.
Ah, fair enough, forgot about that function
Point being though that if they were going to "retire" or didn't want to be harassed, why didn't they delete the discord account? And just like make another lol
Cause Twitter doesn't have a function like Discord does to allow friends only to message you.
No point in deleting it, if you can just set it as that.
I guess so, I don't have any social medias so I wouldn't know about Twatter and it's dumb machinations
Given Iāve read some disgusting tweets aimed at Cedric and Dollie I wouldnāt be surprised if Bluestone had received similar messages
He has.
I've seen a few
It makes me sick to see a passionate dev team treated like that. I just hope the rest of us can remind them itās only a few rotten folks
And sadly, those few rotten folks are rotting the whole carton.
They likely make it impossible to do a lot of things, like trust the community, interact with them in an unofficial or casual format very oftenā¦etc
True
I know if I got those messages Iād hold the community at arms length. Which sucks because I remember when that wasnāt the case
Iād also be wary of a community that begs for new information and leaks and then is angry to the point of sending truly disgusting messages when new content comes out or is teased and it isnāt perfect. We played a precursor to ark 2 for seven years but many vocal folks in the community donāt seem to notice that the game they played isnāt some perfectly polished super game that does everything. But I can already see people holding ark 2 to impossible standards
Oui
nah, rat holes should be count as mesh holes as they are not intended to be made anyways
intended ratholes like most likely for easter eggs and are not buildable
Rag's Highland Water trench is an example
I don't see the issue with small places that are hidden...the janky part is what i dislike lol
Bob mentality lmao

Really trying to start shit
Taco bell sound effect everytime I shoot somthing with a bow and it hits
The power of modding!
Yep
Bluestone.
He no longer exists
I know
Sadge
I actually like that idea
As for ratholes for the most part I donāt think they are made on purpose so they will probably be there
I want personal birthday events in ARK-2.
It can be really simple. But just a single day of the year that's an event for exclusively 'you'
just tell people that its your birthday in your server and maybe they will throw a party
Nah, i like the idea of Vin having voicelines to wish you a happy-birthday to be funny
I think that as long as the rat hole doesnt have a crouch point or isnt in the mesh it's fine.
Ark 2 is early 2023 right
Best act like it doesn't exist, it'll show up eventually but probably not on the set dates lol

Treating 12/31/2023 as the earliest release date is my go to.
Probably not, looking at other games that were initially released end of a year and got delayed, and then it gets released begin next year in like march, august at its latest
It's " dont get my hope up date", not an actual prediction
Lol
Dude Frieza has actually been spitting facts in my absence recently
Might as well speculate on when they will reveal more news regarding ark 2.
Thatās the least useful thing to speculate lol, thatāll just happen
how do we feel about dinosaurs like T-rex and Trike actually being able to go toe to toe like how it was in the real world
or do we want the rex to be more powerful overall an 100% wins the 1v1
Iām fine with the trike being moved to be a later game tame, possibly a bit larger, and getting that role
I think the reason theyāre early game is for marketing: Iād imagine early game new ark players tend to stick around when they spawn and recognize āomg a trike and a stego! I know those!ā
Hard agree: I want them to be a threat in the wild and when mounted beyond veggie cake soakers + theri lol
To be fair we have a decent amount of strong herbivores already like the wolly rhino, megatherium, therizino, mammoth, stego and bronto
But they all get underused because they all have either really bad stamina or really bad speed or sometimes both
But yes, I agree that the trike and also the anky definitely aren't as powerful as they deserve to be
The anky is a farming dino lol
Right now it is
Or net gun š¤£
Iām wondering if Iād prefer herbivores like the bronto and trike largely stay slow but get some form of meaningful tank niche against other tames
I wish herbivores got a massive buff, rn 2 direwolves can obliterate a mammoth without much difficulty
Anything you tame in this game can kill wild shit lol
If the mammoth was tamed it'd be the other way around
I just hope that the devs allow more mods to enter the consoles. C'mon man, the only mod us console peeps have are, what? Primitive +?
Who uses primitive +?
Did you not read the information for the game?
Effectively, no.
You should probably read it
'ight. I will
You aren't the person that uses that type of slang wtf
shifter has used the term "spitting facts" numerous times by now
WUT
This is correct
Iām flattered by your assumption that Iām a scholar who doesnāt use slang
You are the best active person in chat to discuss ark 2 with
Yāall are too kind
Itās been a while tho since a juicy ark 2 game design conversationā¦makes me a bit sad
Itās true doe
Love you too.

Love me to pls (;

Heh
?
Letās open a discussion; what do we think about bosses getting resistances to certain damage types? For example taking less damage from players to encourage tame use?
I'd prefer targeted hitzones with different resistance multipliers - like maybe the joints are weak to slashing claws or blades (cutting arteries), or eyes being weak to stabs/arrows
Kinda like how Monster Hunter does it
So more hitzone based?
Yeah
Youāre thinking damage types could be 1.) ranged (player) 2.) melee (player) 3.) melee (tame) 4.) breath/element ?
I do kinda wonder what level of detail should be given to say acid vs frost vs fire element attacks if we see them. It would be cool if there were natural plays to reduce their effectiveness, like jumping in water to put out fire or rolling in mud to mitigate acidā¦or lightning dealing extra damage to airborne units that arenāt grounded
Yes
Any thoughts on the discussion that occurred after?
About hitzones?
Iām starved for a good ark 2 game design chat lol
Hit zones and then perhaps a discussion about element damage
Facts. I think ark 2 could certainly work as a sandbox rpg
Tbh I almost want them to drop the sandbox lol and be a survival rpg
ARK is technically already a sandbox RPG
Thatās why I think ark 2 would work with the same genre š
Yes, i too think ARK would work as the same game
I think the MMO stuff from ark 1 needs to be dropped. But youāve heard my arguments about that XD
But jokes aside, i would love if they embrace more of the survival/sandbox/RPG elements of ARK.
And it's hard to drop sandbox in a open-world game.
That's kind of what a Sandbox is to a degree.
Yea thatās fair
I always struggle with how to make the survival parts of ark betterā¦I have ideas of how to make the fights more complex or the rpg more involved. But how do you make survival more fun?
First, i think making death more scary and punishing would help that.
I think punishments should be strong and non variable
Right now your death hurts more the farther you are from your base (itās 0 cost if you die in base and if youāre on the other side of the map itās near 100% loss of your stuff)
Yeah, and that's the issue.
Hard to make a meaningful death if it's online.
Why games like Green-hell and The Forest are scary, is also due to the fact that if you die, you have to restart to your last save. Which can be hours ago.
Thereās good arguments for you lose all items after you last used a bed (subnautica style) or you can only keep certain items/a limited count (tarkov)
What I hate is chasing my loot bag. I donāt want death to be a means to cheese but I loathe relying on a spoilage timer to gauge the depth of my risk when I die
Hmm
No, i don't believe it will.
I think the steam-page states it's being improved.
Marketplaces?
You're agreeing that you've done RMT?
You do know that's against the TOS
You just said you've made 4000$?
I've took a screenshot.
I was gone for five minutes lol
Letās be honest ark devs donāt really care if you do money for trades
*enforce
Itās a thing Iāve been stressing here for agesā¦if they canāt or wonāt enforce CoC to the level people think is passable why host official?
They obviously do if it's against the rules of the server
But thereās a trading discord that has tens of thousands of people on it doing trades for money
I think the lack of admins vs the huge amount of servers is the main issue
And?
Ain't their server.
It's not illegal, so they can't get the discord in trouble.
But they could see the people doing these trades and enforce action but they donāt
They canāt do anything against discord, but still can against the people
You really think they're going to join the discord, and 'NOT' be banned by the admins?
Ik but my point is they just donāt ever enforce it whatsoever, never heard of someone getting banned for doing trades for money
I have.
It's just rare
Probablyā¦but the outcome is the same. Donāt host what you canāt enforce imo
I hope they have better enforcement on servers for ark 2
Gotta remember, there's only like 10 admins that have to enforce literally 100+ servers.
Really hard to find people with proof.
Proof is a big one. Any idiot can spam reports on someone they donāt likeā¦you have to be extremely careful to avoid false positives
Yep
See: new world AI reporting
This is why i think they should cut back on the servers in ARK-2.
ARK is far from a dead game.
But the community spreads to low-pop servers then it's either easier to build, or survive.
That's no way to play a game, nor have a game.
I would say it actually is more telling on how people want to play ark
You say that.
Then people will complain.
People want to play largely low pop, with some rare moments of high pop mega tribe fighting
People complain about literally anything
Yep
Imo āpeople will complainā is not a reason for almost any choice lol
I think having 20 servers with a large population would be better. (as long as the map is large enough to support it)
Yea that would be nice
I think it would work if the admin ship actually improved
Yea, it would be nice if reports were acted on not weeks after being put
I know itās hard to act on stuff because false reports exist and thereās also just a lot of reports but still
It would be nice to have admins online often enough so they can eye witness
Possibly a true invisible āghostā mode for stealth admin checks
I also think they need to have like 2-4 people hired to specifically look through the reports.
That'd speed up stuff a lot more.
RMT transfers are against the code of conduct and will lead to a ban on this discord
You canāt catch it all, and itās always an arms race of people sneaking things around your enforcement
Which is why I kinda like the minecraft approach so much lol
in ark 2 it would be nice if they added npc with functions, utilities and special objects mainly for those who play in single player
Weāre getting Santiago in missions it sounds like
But Iām very against human NPCs in ark: I think it flies in the face of the tame based gameplay ark is all about
Hmm, if done well it could really be good. I find the concept of being able to build a civilization in a game like ark to be really intriguing, but that might just be the civ 6 in me talking lol
I think thatās a bit too much scope creep for ark
It might be lol, but personally I wouldnt complain too much if ark combined all my favorite genres into the same game lol
Like Raq said, if done right. NPC's can work
I think the best course for NPC's would be if they had a settlement system. (which i unironically want)
That would kill the game lol
ARK is already apparently a "dead game" to some people
It's dead compared to what it was before
ark in June says otherwise
It still has higher than average player counts then this time of year basically of any previous year
But that effort spent on NPCs comes at a cost (usually to other features, many of which I see as unique features that separate ark from its competitors like rust and conan). Some day we may get the perfect civilization fantasy taming survival MMO sandbox rpg but I sense we arenāt there yet
I am willing to pay the cost
You have a half million lying around?
Human npc dont make much sense to me because thats the role that other players are supposed to fill
Maybe. š
Plus dinos does the same thing but bigger
No shit
Iād much prefer a curated singleplayer mode than human NPCs that make singleplayer easier
That kinda defeats the purpose of a "sandbox" if it's curated
Damn Shifter, now i want them even more after you said "civilization fantasy taming survival MMO sandbox rpg"
Basically my dream game.
Bosses are made easier, exp is higher, tame max levels are higherā¦and thatās just some of the ark 1 changes to SP
Curated doesnāt mean perfectly structured, it just means hand designed for a specific purposeā¦in this case to play alone lol
Iād like it too, but the industry isnāt there yet. Imagine ark 6 which has evolution of new traits over time and realistic ecosystems and ecology that adapt to things like fires, floods, and deforestation
So you mean... Adjustable sliders, that is pretty much available in all SP games
Unless I am missing something
And settlements!
SP ādefaultā is instantly different through the checkbox for SP. thatās what Iām referring to. The suite of settings and internal changes made that specifically benefit SP beyond basic rates sliders
I am sure that Exist somewhere where the thing you are trying to survive is your town
I have to rewatch JadePG's news
Ninja'd
Thereās a ton of games out there right now in the survival city/town builder genre
Yeah, they probably do. But not as well as ARK
And they do it better than ark does (because ark doesnāt do it at all lol)
Yes.
But they're not survival, nor have mass taming like ARK does
Many are survival, where you have to eat and survive against the environment while you build up a town/city and recruit NPCs
Mass taming tho is very rare, itās one of arkās definitional traits
Yes
But the Aratai imo are the start of NPC camps in the series, but in a game where space is already at a premium between players on official I doubt people will accept the addition of player fostered NPC settlements
Hmmmmmm
People say the same thing with the souls-combat, so we'll see
People are salty about souls combat because itās not ark 1 combat
My concern with NPC settlements in ark 2 (especially if made by players) is that they stress the already heavily limited resource of available map space
we shall wait for the people crying about doing combat with more than ''spam leftclick''
I think a RuneScape option would be interesting for PvE lol, then you could do NPC settlements no sweat. That is to say ban building everywhere but a special ābuild zoneā that every player has access to (or tribe) thatās off the map and requires a teleport
That could work in PvE
So, space is the main issue?
I would say so, beyond the obvious reality that itās a new system that requires tons of new assets, AI, balancing, design, etc
People are gonna get irked if the map is clogged by peopleās NPC settlements lol
Right.
And that's why it'd be more of a later on update, or a core-feature of a DLC
Oh absolutely not. Youād have to bake this into the core design
Every map and mechanic would have to operate around settlements, thatās just how they work. Itās one of the hardest mechanics to slap into a game
Not necessarily, if they go with limiting the whole transfer system.
Could be an exclusive feature to a DLC, and see how people react to it.
Yes, but the same logic applies; you canāt shoehorn in a settlement system
Youād have to release this supposed DLC and basically offer it as āark 2 but jk itās a totally different gameā
True.
I guess we'll see if any modders make a system like that, and how the community reacts to it.
I think itās a great place for mods to step in, but on official I canāt see it working
Unless again you found a way to split out and guarantee players could always find room to buildā¦because people are gonna get instantly pissed at maps being clogged with NPC settlements otherwise
Meh, if anything. It gets popular and they could add it as a core-feature in a ARK-3. ā
Itās possible. Itās gonna boil down to if they keep the PvP focus like they have for ark 1 and 2
If they make ark 3 PvE focused with PvP as a side mode, settlements seem much more plausible. Same if they lean hard into the MMORPG and find ways to grant players āplotsā outside the map
I canāt speak for Conanās map and land use system
i suppose we will find out more later on, for now it's fun to speculate ;3
It also depends if ARK-2's map is grid based like Atlas
Oh yikes to a grid system
Well it could also generate the massive suite of problems the grid caused to atlas gamers lol
The issues are also due to the fact Atlas is built off of ARK's coding
And a single grid is the size of The fucking Island in ARK-1.
So it wouldn't need to be as large as Atlas if it's all land
So, a good 6x6 grid could work
People loathed the claim system, they loathed people cheesing it, they loathed megas spam claiming and locking people outā¦it wasnāt all shoddy code
That was also due to the poor claim system.
You should only allow to have one, large area to a whole tribe. That's it.
And it should be instant like any other structure. Not fucking pumping money into it.
š¤·āāļø The easiest counter argument is that idk if I want to go searching for solos and all their infinite claims
That's why i stated 'one per tribe'
In Atlas, there's no claim limit
I assumed one claim per tribe. If Iām solo myself it means a stupid long search to get started and if Iām in a mega Iām just splitting into sub megas and claiming more
True
But that's kind of no different then how it already is, with claiming spots with pillars
Itās a major problem official networks have to manage. Idk what theyāve thought of for ark 2
True
Anyway.
I want to be able to go around random peoples bases and say "Another settlement needs your help. I'll mark it on your map"
Who knows when exact release is?
wildcard
Bet they dont either
Ye
pretty sure they do cause they are the ones that will update steam page to sell the game
Im gonna buy it 100%
Its not even finished
but that wasent your question, you ask "who knows when exact release is?" and i answer you
Ok
as for my opinion of the game state i would dare say its about 20% done by now
Yes
I dont think they do know the exact date, they probably have a range of a month or two when they want to release it but i doubt theres a specific day yet
Thank you sir lol
I think a hut or station base NPC system would be simple enough to implement with a similar build system to ark 1, especially if you dont have them free roam.
Like the S+ nanny?
In a way. I was thinking more of a mixture of fallouts settlement system and far cry's encampment system. Where the NPCs are restricted to the hut or immediate surrounding area.
Far cry:
- Limited number of huts
- Different crafting requirements for each.
- Can provide services like crafting, resource maps, or store.
Fallout: - Need to recruit settlers, whether my mission , random encounter, or settlement reputation.
- Need to keep them happy ( food, etc).
- Can periodically find resources, tend nearby crops, operate stationary defenses.
In practice it would be an NPC system you can utilize or ignore completely if you want to.
This is all i want with NPC's
Another successful day of ark completed. Now to watch Syntac and Shane the Shadow vids.
I feel like this will be a necessity for any non dino/aratai npcs in ark2. I think a lot of people (myself included) would be a little dissapointed if the entire game revolved around human npcs. I wouldnt be upset if they added them and they were done well, I just want to be able to ignore them if I want to
Understandable.
I thought your last profile pic was bad but this one is a whole new level
I get more cursed as time goes on
And with that, more powerful!
Cant wait for ark 2 most cursed character creator
Please, Wildcard.
Give us even more cursed characters
Anyway i have multiple hours left on this flight so plenty of time to chat about stuff
I want Saints-Row level of cursed
I agree
ark2 should have non dino servers

Nah lol this shits probably been in development for years and they gave it another year before releasing it, no way itās only for 20% done by now
Just make your own unofficial server
ARK is not ARK without dinos
Maybe he means maps that only have alien wildlife or fantasy based creatures
Hey does anyone have a server i can join?
Id like to see that besides maps with dinosaurs
Soooo, every single map basically past The Island?
Still considered "dinos"
I hate how the community has normalized the term 'dino' to be everything.......
Morellatops is technically considered as a fantasy creature
Does anyone have a server i can join
It's like "I didn't know there where fucking reapers back then."
Where are their bones right š
No servers for ARK 2 yet
Nah, it's cause they had exoskeletons.
That's why we can't find fossilized reapers
Arthropleura sends it's regards
You can find fossilized exoskeletons though
Dinosaurs didnāt have exoskeletons
Soft exoskeletons exist
No shit.
How else the Anky turns into a Helicopter after it dies
Thought Iād go along with you
Heard something about the Aratai being able to ride dinosaurs and fight with them aswel. What are your thoughts on that?
Basically like the minions of the Master Controller, I don't mind this
It would be awesome if you can steal their tame GTA style
The modder managed to made it happen in ARK 1
Steal their tame gta style š
Yoink that Ork out and the tame is mine
If itās a big tame like a Rex than itās going to be hard
Grappling Hook dismount... If you are accurate enough
It would be nice to keep both ATLAS (handheld with arching) and ARK (accurate with crossbow)'s type of Grappling Hook
I do hope we will get something like a grappling hook again yeh
Do you think this would be low impact enough and small enough to not run into the issue I mentioned above about maps already being difficult for players to find space to build on? Iām curious
Iād only accept it if you could kill all the Aratai then try to tame from scratch their remaining unridden mounts
Because it kinda violates tame logic if you kill a rider and the tame is suddenly wild againā¦but maybe in the case of Aratai if you wipe them all you can try your hand at changing a tameās allegiance
I donātā¦I think ark 1ās grappling hook was ok in ark 1 but for ark 2 where we supposedly have parkour and better movement i donāt want to see all the other mechanics (yanking players, instant overburdening tames, instantly getting out of harms way, cheesing caves by spider manning, etc) associated with them come back
It works in ATLAS which is basically pirated ARK 1 anyways
Does atlas have parkour? If not, the comparison is moot. Iām saying because of ark 2 parkour the ark 1 grappling hook doesnāt add much beyond the drawbacks I stated
What the modder did is if you kill the rider and spare the tame then the tame is yours to keep, given the tame is already aggressive
I would like to add the Andrew minigame as a process to make the tame change alligence
Right, I donāt want this. Otherwise you just wack the Aratai riders and the raid effectively gets nerfed because the tames arenāt still āallied to themā
will ark 2 be out early next year or late does anyone have a geuss
Assume December, be surprised if it isnāt
I think Septemburary 45th
noo, that assumption is way to early
I reckon it can still be nice to have though, but it shouldnāt be made like in ark 1 where you can just shoot them non stop.
I think dont assume any specific part of the year just assume mid feb-december
u right, more likely Janugust 57th or so and so
that's a bit better
Xbox Showcase seemed to suggest early half of 2023, but that's no guarantee
A much slower projectile for the hook could work, Iāll concede
how much game price sell ARK2 at steam?
Yes
i m poor , I will save money from now for buy ARK2 latter š
ark becomes kark without dinos >:D
Ark without dinosaurs would beā¦pretty similar in the land and seas. Youād mostly be ruining the beach bob experience and the stuff like rexes and gigas. Swamps often only have dilos and barys for dinosaur representation lol so they wouldnāt be changed much either
aren't like 70% of the creatures dinosaurs
Not at all
Most of the DLC creatures are fantasy
In fact, I could count with 1 hand how many true dinosaurs came out as dlcs
ye but each DLC adds like 10 creatues to the roster
Yeah
That's quite a bit
Andrewsarchus, amargasaurus, dinopithicus (not sure about that one) sinmacrops, deinonychus,
Oh right tropeo
Still, only 6
my point is base ark had like 100+ dinosaurs
No it didn't
lemme actually go fact check this
Please do
Of those only 2 are dinosaurs
Sinomacrops might actually be one: Iād need to confirm it isnāt an early toothed bird and is actually a dinosaur though
But the arkās are covered in prehistoric creatures that arenāt dinosaursā¦itās actually been shifting away from hard dinosaurs for a while tho
apparently i am just extremely dumb
And deinonychus and tropeo
But andrews isnāt a dinosaur, hopefully we agree
tropeo is a pterosaur so not technically a dinosaur
I mean we will go with "prehistoric" to make it easier
But you are correct
Well when someone says āno dinosaursā I have to take it literally lol
that changes a bit
All the mammals aren't dinosaurs
That's a pretty big roster
Neither are any pterosaurs or sea reptiles
We will go with prehistoric to make things easier
Thatās a big chunk of the roster for sure
slightly more than half
I assume weāre looking at tamable roster? Or just āanything that spawnsā?
anything
so yeah, the majority of the roster is still prehistoric
they looked like modern jellyfish. they haven;t evolved that much
Many shapes and sizes; contrary to sandwichās statement lol
But they fossilize terribly so who knows how many weāll never know about
i meant as in, basic body structure
It could be, it has a very generic jellyfish shape
Modern Cnidaria include jellyfish and corals btw, so itās a pretty massive group
but im no biologist, so take that with a grain of salt
Jellyfish in ark are called cnidaria
So I wasn't referring to coral
But you are correct
Cnidaria is the name of a phylum. Itās like naming a random animal āchordateā
ah yes, animal
Ay it's arthropod
this reminds me of something i saw in the new jurassic world movie
one of the characters looks at a locust and identifies it by seeing that it has "legs, thorax, and mandibles"
which is like half of all insects
laughs nervously in porifera
š
any news for ark2?
It's just easier to say +most people actually think that
Idk when dinosaur became a term for āall extinct animalsā
It makes sense to confuse other ancient reptiles with them tho, since iirc the science used to call them all dinosaurs until it was discovered that they had different evolutionary pathways
I lose brain else everytime someone calls a megatherium a dinosaur
points at wolf
"cool feline"
basically
Speaking of which, did those actually get high from eating bugs?
what! megatherium is not dinosaur!
It's an early mammal
Thatās actually not too far offā¦dogs and cats are both classed under āCarnivoraā
points at bee
"cool feline"
Any mammal, pterosaur, or sea reptile is not a dinosaur
But birds are XD
Flightless birds or all birdw
All
Fuck
Brain successfully fried
š®
Archosaurs -> dinosaurs -> some therapods (specifically) became brides by the mid Jurassic -> all birds came from that first bird
I think it would. Restricting them to the hut or immediate area, limiting the number of huts of a certain type, making the crafting requirements non trivial and unique, needing NPCs to be recruited in some way, and NPCs requiring upkeep would all prevent NPC spam across the server.
You donāt think people would just clog all the solo base locations with themselves and their NPCs to try to profit off NPCs?
You mean create alts and spam them?
Limit NPC numbers
I think youd need a reasonably sized base for the huts, which plays into the layout system
I was thinking generally but thatās also a worry
I'm sure solo player will want NPCs, but the upkeep and number limit required would limit them being used like pillar spam
Itās weird how people used the term dinosaur for every rehistoric creature, I guess itās just because the most popular and well-known creatures of the past are dinosaurs
I think it's just not well known and often referred to in the extinct context
The less you know the easier it is to be wrong
Iāve talked to folks who donāt think insects are animals. Lots of people think pests ā animals
Honestly it's hard to say and kind of nerdy to classify it correctly
What was their argument
Or invertebrates arenāt animals
laughs in Chordates (animals with spines) being one of most rare animals
What are they then? Produst?
As have i
Animals š. But to them they tend to get confused
I guess, less sentient so not animal?
Except nowhere in the description for animal does it list a required level of sentience
Some people do incorrectly classify protists as animals
I almost read protesters
That too
For some people yeah
But protesters are animals, I mean have you SEEN them? /j
Most people forget protests exist
Protists LMAO
Fml
Point still stands
I want more tidal flats
Ever see a big stretch of knee/waist deep sea grass? I want that
So, tsunamis for early game disasters, yet or nah
Iām not sure beaches will be the same start weāre all used to from ark 1
Tides would be sick tho
If you progress to slow you get wiped
People already do that
In PVE
I don't think the PvE community would be very happy about that...
Aratai will probably do that
I feel like they'll just wander around and be aggressive instead of attack your base
I'd be down for tidal flats if it provided cool building mechanics and resources
Like let me trap fish with an ancient tide V trap
Iām already in love
You also suggest something insanely cool. Specialized biome buildings (tree taps and gas extractors are examples of something close, but it would be even cooler if something like the fish trap you mention was playable anywhere on the coast IN a certain biome)
I kinda assume that's going to be a thing, in a way, since they already leaned into it so hard with Scorched and showed interest in doing so in the future. Also just kinda the temperature system and how it amplified the coolness or heat of a specific zone
can someone @ me to a brief summary of what ark 2 will feel/look like compared to ark now
With particular structure types
Pins of this channel š
thnx
I think the only biome specific thing in the entire game was the windmill, and it followed a biome static āwindā value that only changes on a couple maps when thereās weather (I think only rag and SE)
There's definitely more than just Rag and Scorched that have wind, but I meant like the fact that you have to either use or insulate your base with adobe in Scorched, as an example of biome specific structures (viewing Scorched as a sort of complete map biome, I guess š )
That also plays into my hopes for Ark 2 biomes, that they'll go the route of Scorched and/or Aberration, where the map has an overtly obvious theme (forest, mountain/snow, desert, cave, ocean, etc.) and then have offshoot biomes from there, as opposed to them having literally every biome on one map like every single map since Aberration was released did.
I really don't like the idea of having it be like Atlas either, where they have the maps be in the same worldspace and traversable via a barrier or released as DLCs and tacked on to the current map, akin to the redwoods back when that was added to The Island and The Center
That's the worst case scenario to me, the Atlas route. I'd be fine with the tried and true method of all (or most of) the biomes in every map, if they didn't want to take that risk of having another Scorched (which I could understand), they are taking a lot of risks so far with all the changes they have planned. I just hope they do the biomes justice and don't have them feel too crowded. Maybe having bigger maps in general will help with that feeling, though, since they can spread them out a bit more and have there be more tundra-y areas (like there should have been on The Island.)
Primary primitive, 3rd person only, component crafting, advanced movement, souls combat, hostile PVE threat (aratai) sense based hunting, skill tree
I think it works to have maps like SE when you have fliers that make maps look small. On maps like Ab they had a lot of unique sub biomes within the three major ones (four if you count the surface) that are small but appear larger because there are no fliers, and I think both formats work. For ark 2 local weather beyond a temperature stat would certainly help incentivize different building behavior or the use of certain structures/gear/playstyles to handle it
But imo biomes should feel more separate. On maps like Fjordur distance, color palette, spawns, and temperature kinda work because itās a community map thatās sorta meant to be a bit jack of all trades
Whereas ark 2 imo should really seek to avoid shoehorning in random environments, but should also seek to make you want to explore the ones youāre in. Ark 1 snow biomes donāt get MORE interesting at the interior, they usually just get slightly colder. A good biome system may incentivize you to explore deep into the jungle for something as opposed to skirting the edges
I agree, i think the best way to make an environment feel more fleshed out is to make it map-sized, and to have a bunch of sub-biomes (like Aberration did, and like the island sorta did)
Also, as much as I like the convenience of some fliers, it does feel like cheating once you get an argentavis. Itās the same way most open-world games feel very small when they add extensive fast-travel (Breath of the Wild my beloved)
Fast travel works well in that it shrinks the parts of the game you explored and keeps the parts you havenāt large
Unlockable fast travel and/or non-exact fast travel (ala BotW) is good. Start of the game, go anywhere you want fast travel is bad. That's my take
I think fast travel in a open world raid oriented pvp game like ark is a bad idea honestly
Just look at the fjord hawks and people's reactions to them
God I want ark 2 now š«
SAmeeee
Iām hoping this is them experimenting with keep inventory on death
I liked the random teleportation effect that occurred when an enemy players where at the teleport point. Helped stop ambushes, but I'd like to see them do the same with enemy turrets
Spawning into a random turret tower was not fun
I think fast travel will likely resemble teleports but ideally with some mild improvements
I do think fjordhawks are a good sign. It shows WC is looking at ways to not make death as miserable. Maybe weāll see a slot or weight cap on what can be saved after death in ark 2
Can you shoot down or follow a fjord hawk?
