Why did they remove mei-yins characteristica of being the beast queen? they could have had a subplot of her and helena going out to try and tame a giga to defeat nervas superior force instead of him having only 1 rex at his main base + a giga that was never seen or heard from before. You cant really hide a kaiju sized monster like that

how did nerva even get that giga if his only method of subduing a creature is violence. that doesnt really work with a giga. And if rockwell did some shiny science and chemistry tricks to knock it out or something, i would have liked to see that

I may even have an idea to introduce the giga as an end boss kinda character. Lore wise, a giga gets spawned by the arks to prevent one tribe from becoming to powerful. What if, hear me out, as soon as helena and mei-ying defeat the broodmother and the green obelisc activates, we see some green light spurting from the obelisc and maybe even the giga itself manifesting on the platform below it, immediatly attacking other creatures around it. That would show that A) its not a natural creature but a creation of the ark and B) create a new subplot for the show since now the two side of nerva and mei-ying try to possess what is essentially a beast of war, creating further confrontation and the need to act quickly on mei-yings side

Loads of people complain that he isn't manipulative anymore but he literally talks about doing it in the old alliance and says he's doing it to nerva

we get hints that he's not a great guy as he talks about human test subjects and siding with one tribe because of a bribe

What is Rockwell to Nerva in the show?

In the notes, Rockwell was an advisor and (possibly) created exilirs for Nerva. Which happened because Rockwell was a respected entity and knew a lot about The Island.

In the show, Rockwell appears to be close to Nerva but acts a little less as an advisor and more of a dino-tamer (his comments with Helena in the first episode)

For all I know, he could still be an advisor/chemist for Nerva and it’s just less obvious. (For me anyways)

Honestly I watched an episode and a half and turned it off. The way Rockwell acted and he and Nerva working together right off the bat told me they just said F the explorer notes. Rockwell's character arc and descent into madness is central to the ARK story. He wasn't just some evil psychopath at the start. I'd rather watch Neddy's recreation of the explorer notes than whatever this is.

Rockwell definitely had some questionable morals from the start but he was generally friendly with Helena and enjoyed their talks because it was nice to have another person of science to talk to. He even remarks about how it's a shame how she would have been thought of as a woman scientist in his time.

In the notes he admires Helena a lot, he is happy that she’s around and he looks forward to having conversations with her as he considers her the only one able to hold interesting ones. He is also the one to point out it’s a shame that she couldn’t have been a scientist back in his day because she is a woman…so yeah, hardly a misoginist based on what little information we have, and if he was it would definitely not have been aimed at Helena on their first encounter.

Them having Helena spawn on the island so long after other events so to speak messes up his character up too much. He also isn’t the “silver tongued diplomat” as he self describes in the notes either (though for that there is always room for redemption on SE).

I’m not saying Rockwell isn’t the main human antagonist of the series, I’m just saying that in the original there is a character developement that here is completely missing and it is exactly that character developement and his spiraling out of control due to the relationship with element and “his friends abandoning him” that make him a good antagonist character.

The whole story is about how element corrupts, both literally and figuratively (and all the metaphores than one can fit with it). Element brought the end of the world, element is the main antagonist and yet also so useful and powerful.

Rockwell doesn’t become the human champion of element because he is a horrible person, but because he experiments, injects himself, wants to defeat death, gets corrupted by it.

Yes his morality is from the 1800s and he might’ve had a pretty interesting personality disorder and the backstory might have worked with that, but any further developement in the series cannot fix the damage that was done to the original lore especially in terms of the relationships that are supposed to tie him to the other main characters, Helena in particular

Why is the timeline of events completely messed up?

Why is nothing as strong or as weak as it should be based on the game?

Why is Rockwell just "meeeh meeeh I'm so evil now" openly torturing people including humans even back during The Island instead of his incredibly well written decsent into insanity and villainy starting at Scorched Earth?

Why is Nerva essentially king of everything when it was supposed to be another character at first and we see him conquering and building up his fleet?

Why does Helena never really once geek out at the slightest notice of all the prehistoric creatures and start writing explorer notes and hanging out with every other tribe to get information and build relationships and socialize?

why did they rob us of Nerva and Mei Yin's epic hours long bloody final battle against each other in the obelisk instead of cutting it short and ruining the timeline in the process?

It's at least #1 for me.

And the fact the show got basically ALL of it wrong...

Really makes me sad. This should've been a big beautifully animated beacon to attract people to the series.

By using Grade A Resources to tell the lore and story that made us all love it so much in the first place to all the normies who never gave the game a chance or thought it was too big or lame or whatever.

Given the final explorer note on extinction being a hologram of the 2 of them and a call for help/action against the titans and how their story is the only one still ongoing on earth. It definitely seems like it's more intended for them to be together vs Mei Yin and Helena.

Then they go off together to continue to survive together and we get the final explorer note (until Gen)

Thats the biggest dissapointment, ark lore is amazing and generally amazing but not many people know / understand it because of the format its delivered in, the show was a perfect chance to bring recognition to the ark lore and give us some answers we dont have, instead they made some characters gay, ruined some other characters, destroyed the whole point of mei yin being the one who rides the dinos and made everybody instantly have some, and of course the protagonist just makes every dino love her randomly, while the enemies dinos turn on them for no reason (maybe they have been abused or what not but how can an animal the size of a rhino love her at first sight, because she "saved" him by pulling out a arrow he randomly comes in a camo full of carnivores so save her)

I just finished the first part of this show and I know that my opinion is fully subjective but It was a very super nice moment for me to watch it. It makes me remind of my first time I've launched ARK many years ago. I'm present in ARK since the alpha and I when I was a kid have always thinking this: Damn this game is so good someone can create a very nice show of it and I've always wished someone will do. Sure, there are definitly things there that would have been great to see 1-1 from the explorer notes. But just making the game into a glorified let's play would have been really boring.

Like, would you rather spend an episode a giant-ass spider and seeing the characters getting rewarded for it? Or would you rather spend an entire episode watching the characters practice sloth-eugenics to breed an army to kill her, a 5 minute fight scene with the broodmother, and then an another episode where they grind out the materials needed to make the Tekgrams?

A "lore-accurate" series specifically following the explorer notes down to a tee could have worked... in the early-mid 2010s before streaming took off and series where allowed to run for 60+ episodes. Lord knows I'd have loved to watch that myself. But alas, the corporate pigs running Hollywood at the moment are chronically adverse to anything but listening to the soulless algorithms that run the platforms. And thus they care more about being able to say they have shows on their platform and rather than giving those shows everything they need to thrive. Hence so many shows in this day and age getting 6-12 episode seasons with extremely high cancel rates.

Again, this is why I suspect Mei-Yin and Helena are getting together. It's honestly a surprising amount of foresight on Wildcard's part.

All that being said, an explorer note-accurate series just isn't feesable in the limited amount of episodes the show has. And y'know what? I think all the changes where actually pretty good.

Rockwell may have been a villian from the start, but he was an enjoyable villian whenever he showed up, and it looks like we're still getting his decent to madness in part 2. I liked all the new characters who weren't in the explorer notes, especially Thunder Comes Charging and Alasie's relationship. And the anti-pacifist themes of violence as a necessary force against oppression was compelling.

I won't claim it was a perfect show, I don't watch enough series to have silly little things like standards. But as an adaption I would comfortably argue that it was faithful to the source material. Not in words, but in spirit.

As for your latter question, you said it yourself. The camp we saw in episode 1 was just a small outpost, while all the brontos and giga where in/from his home fortress. There are plenty of reasons why a smaller camp would want smaller dinos. Logistics, maitinence, practicality. Standing armies are expensive as hell to maintain. And in an outpost like that; which probably only served as a hub for travel between itself and Nerva's fortress; maintaining an entire standing army of rexes there would have been a fools errand. Both impractical and expensive. So just keep smaller, easier to maintain dinos there with an emergency rex in case shit starts to hit the fan and/or you need to put some rebellious prisoners in their place.

I think changing it was the plan from the start. The series doesn't follow the notes super closely. And given how hostile the industry is towards series ATM, they probably set up Mei-Yin and Helena becuase they didn't know if the show would go on long enough to introduce Diana in the first place.

That being said, if they are able to introduce Diana, there is a secret, third option that would solve every conceivable problem.

NGL Bob's death was probably one of my top 3 scenes in the show.

You think the joke is going to be mysogony, Whcih y'know, would make sense. Even if he didn't think Women where incapable of acedemics himself, it was probably illegal or atleast extremely hard for women to become scholars back during his time anyways. So you might assume it will lead to some good character development as he learns about what the world became.

And then he gets fucking murdered and not only is it a fantastic subversion, but it also does a great job of setting the tone for the rest of the show and establishes just how cruel and ruthless Nerva's men are.

It sounded like he was gonna say “but you’re a woman” - that is not sexism but surprise, because as you analized the show wants us to think that it was inconceivable for him (in real world history there had already been famous women in science, though still uncommon. Marie Curie for example had already passed a decade before D-day when Bob died, but not before winning 2 nobel prizes and being the only person who to this day has ever won two for two separate fields).

Definitely a very good scene and a tone setter for the show though, I agree with that and I liked it.
It’d just be nice if at least we kept Bob as the good fan service character that it is and not another virtue signaling token

I just finished rewatching the series and i have something to say about Helena and Mei's relationship. Diana and Mei were sooo cute together and honestly I don't think Mei being with Helena has the same feel to it. And I would love if she ends up with Diana in the end. One way to achieve that is to keep developing Helena and Mei yin's relationship. Mei would be indecisive about it at first because of her society and the fact that kissing Helena was a "in the heat of the moment" kind of decision. But overtime, it will grow into something nice and cute, only for Helena to find Victoria on one of the arks. That would create a lot of tension between H and M, for which H would slowly drift apart from M and end up back with her wife. But it's not the same as before, Helena is a different person now and she still loves Mei. While Mei has started a happy relationship with Diana.

That's just how I'd prefer it to play out
