Guess it's possible for them to be also watch towers. Since they're the reasoning why wyverns exist.

Not trying to overload you, but this is something you'll have to keep in mind about ARK's lore, is that the point of it is to 'not' make any logistical sense.
We humans pretend we know shit about the universe, but every year we prove to even ourselves this. By rewriting old laws of the universe.
Quite a bit of people thought black-holes where just a myth, and look at us now. Early 2020 and we have a real photograph of a black-hole.
ARK's story is about finding a new material that breaks all known laws of the universe.

5. Bunch of survivors came along and went through the island and scorched
6. On ab the survivors tek nuked the ab overseer
7. Rockwell got to ab and injected himself with liquid element and became corrupted
8. The ark needed a new overseer, so it accepted rockwell and he got stuck there
9. The other survivors got to ext (earth) and killed a bunch of mini-titans, and helena ascended into a homodeus
10. We come along and beat the island scorched and ab, end up on ext and kill the kt, arks come down to earth and earth is purified
11. Rockwell comes down to earth and beams himself to the genesis ship through arat prime, the launching station
12. He corrupts the ship and we are sent to stop him, we beat him in the simulation and wake up on the ship
13. We beat him on the ship and the events of the gen 2 final cutscene take place (no spoilers lol)

Santiago's Notes on Genesis: Part 2 really put into perspective how fucked up the planet was. And how fucked up even the plan to save humanity was.

Tek survivors build a tek nuke in order to escape which didn't work out and the overseer was destroyed, the ark started malfunctioning and they went for shelter in the cave system which is most of the abberation map. they start work on the gateway project in order to get back to earth which is what you see in the ascencion, rockwell goes crazy for the element ends up injecting himself with it turning him into the overseer of the ark.

they probably just brought back Rockwell and stuff to make the story more interesting and to have a satisfying climax, not saying Extinction didn't feel satisfying with its cutscene which is probably one of my favourite cutscenes in the game
