Welcome! I feel like the best way to experience it is to really explore it for yourself. When you get ideas from other people, you miss out on a lot of things that you might normally find if you poke around on your own. I'd start the server on easy mode first, to learn, and you can always up the difficulty as you go along. I'd also start on the Island, to get the starter feel down.

The Island Reforged is a rather nice mod map that’s also free that makes some changes for the way The Island is. I personally like using mods that implement dinos like the Paleoark series or Kami’s Feral Critters. If u want I can DM u my entire modlist

Instead of cheating you could change the rates up higher. There are a lot of options but I'd play it vanilla singleplayer first, then wherever you get frustrated, if you do, you can look for a mod or setting that improves that aspect.

Negatives mutations removes that effect so your chance is back to normal
