adding a gradient mask and subtracting the subject usually helps to add some depth

just turn up saturation and contrast a bit

Hey all! I'm not sure if this falls under the category of a server suggestion or just something for us aviation photogs...

Do we (or should we) have an events page? I think it would be fun to get together (regionally, as able) for events like spotting, live editing, and airshows.

I'm well connected in the Western US with those performing on the airshow circuit and would be willing to set up potential access to special events. I can say, without a doubt, that if you're nearby or able to travel to Sacramento (California Capital Airshow) for the weekend of July 13-14, you won't regret it (except for maybe the heat). I'm on their official photo team, and the info I'm receiving is drool-worthy. Twilight shows both days, pyro, fireworks, and much more... The airfield has been burned in preparation for the action!

I'm also willing to provide my expertise during live editing to help us grow more as photographers/editors. I currently serve as the head of Mudspike Aviation (we have out own Discord Server for everything aviation), and all are welcome. DM me for a server link.

Can you give me a hint on what settings I should use when taking airplane photos?

There is an element of personal preference and obviously you adapt to shooting conditions

But

I usually just shoot at F8, 1/1000

And leave ISO on auto

That’s during the daytime, when I don’t want to pan

To pan, I usually go 1/50 ish, ISO is normally at 100, and F8 - which works during the evening or in cloudier weather

In brighter weather you need an ND filter

At night, aperture wide open, ISO 6400, and pan at 1/50

But that’s just me

A lot depends on the gear you're using. At the Sacramento show that I just worked, I was using an R3 & RF 400mm f/2.8. I was able to shoot jets at 1/4000 at sunset/dusk.

Airshow I’m going to this weekend says no camera bags

Eh, most airshows that I work (media side) don't want to have the scanners/transcievers anywhere near the event. They also take great lengths to keep the frequencies hidden. That said, I do bring a transciever to shows, as (depending on the FAA personnel) it allows me to contact the air boss to advise/request a position change for myself when outside the public fencing.

Sadly, there's been an uptick of the whole "no bags" at shows over the last few years. Glad I don't have to deal with that anymore. The amount of cases/gear I bring in a wagon that rarely gets checked... 😆

Also, if the show is at a military base (that usually hosts an airshow every other year), it's quite often true that there isn't much information that gets handed over from the last team that put on the show (since personnel usually cycles through a base frequently). Most of the time, they're just winging it. Sometimes they get lucky and have people on the team with experience at other bases, but that seems to be more rare.

It’s a civilian field that was formally a base, it’s untowered so I’m fairly confident the airboss freq will just be the Unicom, and if it’s not I’ll just get there early and wait for the call that the field is under airboss control and what frequency to contact him on

I’m not as worried if I can’t get it in cause atleast then I’ll have the airshow announcer saying shit

But I’m going the Friday before the show when I expect the fighter static displays to show up so I wanna hear them call that they’re inbound before they surprise me

I’m pretty confident I’ll be able to get the frequency, my scanner has a mode that will scan nearby and try to pickup transmissions close to me
