The important points for me are the number of machines you need for your desired output. Like, to get enough iron ore, you'll need at least 4 miners. To smelt enough iron plates out of the ore, you'll need at least 6.4 furnaces. To make enough cogs out of the plates, you'll need just one basic assembler, and finally 10 assemblers to make the red science fast enough

I can imagine
Spaghetti isn't that bad
The further I got in my game, the more I went "eh, fuck it, I'll find a way to make this connect to that, no matter how"
Also a lot of people just wait to rebuild once they have constructor bots, since they save a lot of time and energy in deleting and placing things for you
Cause you can make a blueprint and plant it somewhere, and the bots will just build it immediately
Yeh I only just learnt what those are, hope I can learn them quick
Blueprints? They're good when you have something you know you'll have to build nearly identically again, like furnace stacks
Whatever you need for those bots
Oh
As in I just saw them in a video, I haven't got them ingame yet
Ah I see
The thing that'll help you grow quickly is remembering that you should automate as many things as you can, including the construction of machines that you need often. It saves a lot of time
For sure
One of the reasons I restarted
I was still filling up the furnaces by hand with the fuel 😂
And the spaghetti annoyed me to connect up the coal supply, so coal just went into a shit load of chests and I ferryed it across
So I learnt 😂
I think it might be useful for buffering in some spots, maybe like a chest before the boilers
But def not necessary
You could set up the coal belt on the bottom so that both lanes are filled
Might help avoid a brownout in case you have a sudden increase in coal consumption
Done 🫡
Although I don't seem to be using half of these atm
Yeah that's fine
The idea is that if you do have an increase, you'll start using the other half
Did you do it with a spot that splits the belt into two and then inputs each half onto a lane?
I like doing it like this
It's not ideal but it's simple and does the job in a lot of cases
How important is it to go down the military pack route too?
If I am playing on peaceful
Technically you can completely ignore it
It's optional
But it has some neat stuff so I like doing it
I guess ill run down some of it on this run through
It's also fairly simple to make and you can make relatively little amounts of it
Doesn't hurt
I set my factory to make 6 a minute and I think that was enough to finish the game
It also has some useful items like grenades and flamethrowers, which are fun and can be good for clearing forests
Ah okay cool.
Once you manage to get a rocket out youll need space age

Space age is so brutal it makes vanilla feel like a damned middle school day trip to the waterpark
Lol
thats how i feel right now lmao
now the base game feels empty
space age literally like quadruples the content
Fuck gleba fuck aquilo and fuuuuuuck making an edge of system capable ship
Spending more time for each of these step than the previous and all individually are longer than beating the base game
I’m doing a minmaxxing of opportunistic quality crafting yo get the required platform with fusion reactor and shit ton of missiles for huge asteroid dealing and the painge is real
Me doing my first solar platform for white science at the start of space age : omg this is so advanced. Me now, quality upgrading my nuclear aquilo fleet of ships: yawn
Gibberish
Oh hey it's been a decade since I bought factorio
I might buy space age for myself after I finish my degree, in 2.5 weeks
yep, space age is a fairly large jump in complexity. i was surprised that they upped it that much.
what it does well is that you can take it on your own terms
the inner planets are fairly doable, aquilo is challenging but not as much a pain as gleba, but then you can decide to sit there and improve other stuff and you're not punished for it
I will say
There’s a lot to learn on the normal game
But it’s not at that brutal level, it’s fairly easily to move along it’s just a lot happening lol
It’s also more my brain is the issue that the spaghetti annoys me and I want it to be neat 😂
yea there is. also, the base game had one complexity gate (two actually, but the second one doesn't stop you from completing the game). it was blue/chemical science. many people fall apart at the oil processing step, and can't progress any further. the other is rails. some people never end up figuring it out, and just use belts or belts only.
i haven't finished space age, so not sure if there is another complexity gate within it, but back in the day when space age was just a third-party mod, its circuits were somewhat of a gate. it's very simple circuits, and if you've progressed through space exploration, then you should be able to figure it out, but some don't.
You’re also on peaceful mode no? Managing defense and such also adds another dimension.
goddamn glaba eggs
Yeh I am on peaceful too
Yeh that doesn't surprise me
turn on the biters
But it all feels logical, it's more information overload so far than complexity in my mind
I will when I am done with this playthrough lol
Still learning 😄
learn with the biters
bring democracy to them
Lol
i played without biters when i started. then i played for like a year with rampage biters which just made the whole thing a very challenging tower defense game. i've experienced both. now i play without biters, with mods like seablock and py which don't have biters.
Yeh that makes sense
I don't feel like I am missing anything having it on peaceful over the normal mode so
Maybe that will change
evolution/biters is a time check mechanism. they get stronger over time upto a point. it forces you to prepare certain things ready by a certain time. and that time is dynamically determined based on your base's current state.
i don't like being constrained by time in factorio. i just want to build and chill.
Oh right
Yeh I will leave them on peaceful then
I'd rather not feel rushed, I am very much enjoying doing things at my pace
yea, same with me. however, it is a fun aspect of the game, so do give it a try some day. it's a different challenge, and def gives the game a different feel. i enjoy the sandbox aspect of peacful mode, but it's also fun to give it a more narrative-driven gameplay with biters also.
For sure
At what point should I be avoiding using yellow belts
how many tutorials have you watched?
straight tutorials?
about 2
People doing play throughs? too many lol
Me with sniper elite resistance
regarding playthrough videos, i've only watched two, and i enjoyed them. check it out if you want to see what seablock is like:

in seablock, this is how you create an iron plate, the most basic resource:
you need all of that to create a single iron plate.
The fuck lo
Ill stick to this
I should probably upgrade them to steel at some point but the maths is telling me that's still fine
And I am still producing more than I need
you know how you have belt -> furnace -> belt as one row, and that repeats?
this is my plate lines repeated. you can see the icon on the right side that tells you the plate that was created out fo that line
That's mayhem
and that's just to get through red and green science in seablock.
this is the full red/green science base:
the first one is a large image. open it in a browser to zoom in.
some of my biggest achiements in life involve factorio. i have built some stuff that gave me more confidence in life that i can handle large complex challenges in general.
i take gaming seriously. i learn a lot from games. factorio made me a better software engineer.
Ew lol
Speaking of
Why this no worky
looks like there is no input. nothing in the tank.
also, fluid has gone through significantly rework since i played. it used to be wild.
in the mod i played, i was limited by liquid throughput. and to max it, i had to chain pumps together:
it was super silly. i forget exactly what the changes are, but the new fluid system should be so much better than that old crazy system
Im glad I started now then lol
Like in real life
Enjoy 😉
I am 😄
Just rigged up the 4th automation for the 4th science
Although I fear I am bottlenecking myself
