The goal is to take pictures in the style of famous photographers to learn their technique. We'll start the first one with Todd Hido and it will be the style we'll explore / discuss and share about here until March 2025. Lesssss GOOOOO. he cut walls etc and doesn't always bother to show a complete building but I find the compositions have more depth to them (horizontal lines not straight, but verticals yes)

Use a strong vertical element that blocks diagonal axial composition from leading your eye outside the picture

Vertical element will bring eye back into the picture and back around

I'm currently out shooting

There's a house i think could work but it's scary just taking a photo of someone's house

feels the closest to it while also feeling a bit crammed

I think he uses longer lenses (standard to short tele) and puts a bit of distance with the subject

I did this in Norway last summer and it's actually in the vibe

I think next year I'll focus on doing that too in my in law's village etc

because I know the area too well it's mostly boring so night photography might be nice

If you look at Todd's work, he stays rather further away, it gives a sense of isolation rather than one of feeling nose to a wall, the compo's there I think on the first one, just too close to it to create the same feeling

also tilted upwards a smidge further leaving the front of the porch with less space still

Todd Hido can get close, but then he leaves space to create the impression of distance

having foreground lines / elements that come crisscross is also frequent

it's going for perspective at every horizontal line

What exactly makes it so good?

It's a conjuction of factors, one of it is light gathering, so even though pixel density might be the same as, say an XT3, the canvas is bigger, so there are more photons getting into the sensor

then you have 16bit raws

the gfx 50 performs similarly (you could say theoretically better since the pixels are bigger) but the sensor is older

so the gfx will outperform the sony by a little bit

I noticed todd hido's inclusion of street lights directly is pretty selective

I was actively avoiding direct light sources

Also feel like the first image would work better in black and white, even though colour is a big player, but in my personal preference I find it difficult to force a harsh cast (probably orange in this case to contrast the blueish indoor light)

Fog makes such a huge difference (for streetlights especially), too bad it's not the right time of year for fog here

i think i prefer adding the cast, but the black and white is something else imo

This one has been difficult as there is very little elevation difference and large infrastructure where I live.

It's very hard to remove the sky
