I have a heap of M.2 drives under 1TB laying about using them in a JBOD array seems like kludge solution. I could use RAID 0 them, but that would be giving up one of the quintessential advantages of RAID - redundancy.

A bank of 2TB in a classic RAID 5 array makes more sense.

Synology are getting proprietary in their drive systems. I'm going for a third party barebone system with FreeNAS.

Raid 10 would be utterly pointless with an M.2 array.

Soft raid like that offered by Qnap and Synology are just another way of shackling your data to a proprietary system, I'm not a huge fan of that.

The reliability of M.2 drives is sufficient for my purposes.

2Tb Firecudas should be fine.

Turns out no one seems to have made a reimplementation of SHR which is based on Linux MADAM and LVM.

UnRaid seems to have it but they're also proprietary

That's fair enough. Personally I just don't have a lot of time to manage a homebrew server.

Will probably just pick up an older 8 bay Syno which doesn't have restrictions.

I might toy with freeraid ZFS RAIDZ2 - which is essentially raid 6 with a self healing filesystem. The advantages of using this with a M.2 system is that due to their absurd speed there is little time lost in re-silvering the drives.

For the wireless networking aspect the M.2 based NAS I'm looking at doesn't directly have wireless capability, so I have been looking at getting this:

A wireless router would afford greater security and have more I/O options than just slapping a wireless NIC into one of the USB ports.

Plus both the NAS and Router could be powered from a single USB-C powerbank. Which would make for a very capable portable set up.
