If you're spending a significant amount of time out in the sun, yes. Short term it's a non issue, long term that uv can lead to issues in the eyes later in life

This is probably one of the earliest Lightning photographs I have ever taken, with a Leica Monochrome and the M 21mm lux - which adds to the difficulty as when you blow out highlights on a mono sensor the detail is utterly obliterated.

Lightning photography with film is actually easier as with reciprocity failure you can keep the shutter open for longer and capture multiple strikes in one frame - digital can't do that, sensors are too linear.

In a nutshell: film loses sensitivity as it is exposed to light.

Plus film has the useful highlight shoulder curve that preserves highlight detail. Digital is linear, it goes straight to 255 - pure white, and detail is lost.

or 65535 in 16 bit.

It's very much an it depends, ideally the longer the better, just makes it easier. Often does depend on the foreground illumination, or just whether or not the wind allows a longer exposure time. My night time storm photos can be anywhere between a second right up to a minute exposure

Fast lenses help, but aren't strictly necessary. Depending on how far away from a storm one is, it's not unheard of for super telephotos to be used which don't have particularly fast apertures

Issue here where I am is more geography and just general storm intensity, being on the Eastern side of the storm bands isn't great since we get all the scrappy cloud and/or anvil ahead of it blocking the view. Otherwise I don't imagine the storms last night were producing many, it takes a strong positive CG strike to produce a sprite, so need a rather strong storm to begin with, they were weakening last night when I tried.

For me I just see it as I need to be in it to win it, crappy location for them, but I shall keep trying
