Here rn lmao
Next Wednesday is what I'm watching for, 6 days so probably change, however supercell potential towards our central coast
At baggage claim
Ehhh
Only Sony
I mean they all are difficult but yeah ik what you mean
Competition is pretty tough
God I just don't wanna go into the open div next year
alice or darwin?
Syd lmao
uhhhhhhhh that seems incredibly inneficient
No flights to Darwin for Malaysia/sing sadly
It's aviation, it's probably more efficient despite the extra distance, routes also depend on capacity/traffic
PEOPLE I HAVE NEWS
YA BOY GOT A CONTRACT TO GO OUT TO A RACE AND PHOTOGRAPH THE CARS
isnt this u rn?
yeah, but i should be buying soon and my BIL has trust in me
So it's not really a professional shoot it's just shooting for your brother
Hey it's a start
*brother in law
But motorsport is demanding on af, a 300 dollar camera is not gonna keep up
Same thing
yeah ik, its suck
Save some money and wait until you can afford a better camera if you want to do motorsport
bro i have 700AUD to buy EVERYTHING
Yeah save more money
i deal with what im given and i adapt
Where there's a will there's a way
But this is really fucking hard
@static ruin rains coming in lmao
Yeah it'll be off and on. I'm curious what'll happen on the weekend inland, weather models all seem to be clueless
Anywhere between 50ish mm right up to 300+ is possible. City shouldn't be too bad
Bro I'm going from 33c in Melbourne on Saturday to 15c in Christchurch on the same day
what the fuck do I wear
I don't want to boil alive while we're in Melbourne cause we only take off at 12
Shorts, a t shirt and a decent jacket youāll be good
Chuck a hoodie on or smth
I can't take a normal backpack cause I'm bringing my camera lol
So I can't take anything on the plane
A decent jacket and youāll probably get away with a pair of shorts
Canāt necessarily say itās the perfect option but itās what I would do
Yeah I can't remember the last time I was in NZ, but I'm used to warm temps
Might just wear a hoodie and call it a day lol
Worst case scenario have a pair of long pants and a beanie in a readily accessible part of your suitcase
Maybe a pair of trackies or jeans that you can quickly throw over your shorts
I reckon I chuck a beanie in my camera bag and call it a day
Prolly got room lol
Should be able to have my laptop in aswell and still be under 5kg
Iād rock a cap, a fishing shirt, a pair of shorts and some joggers
god bless the R50 being 350g
old dad ahh fit
You're like 16 live a little
wear nothing
Nah itās comfy and what I like wearing
Legit thatās all I wore shooting on Mount Fuji even though it was 6 degrees and stronger wind then I got during Cyclone Jasper
I don't have enough shorts for this lol
If only my 6d was that light
I own like 5 pairs
Your 6d weighs as much as my lens does lol
I was going to get the r50 but itās too small for my hands
Get the r10 then
I have small hands
my s1 is 1Kg, with a 70-200 F4 its 2Kg
I have large hands and I make it work lol
Nah I discovered that I like full frame more then crop
I have the 6d mark ii with a battery grip and my 70-200 f/4 lives on it
Nah my next body will be a 5 or 6 series mirrorless
image whenni get my hands on a BG
the r6mk3 is looking really good
if it gets the r3s sensor and r5iis af like the rumours say itll be fucking crazy
at like 2.8k lol
I love my battery grip such a good investment
R3 sensor with r5ii af and 8.5 stop ibis plus 30fps electronic shutter Iāll have one thanks
yeah all im saying is if it comes close to this ill be getting one
i can live without the video specs and the 14bit raw
id be happy with 12bit
actually fuck 12bit
if the r50 has 14bit its not expensive to make
I do next to no video I can live without those specs
I mean they're nice to have but not relevant to me
Considering the r3 is like 5k now I'm not surprised if some of these rumours are true
14bit has been standard for a long time, it's mostly relevant to electronic shutter, where (most) non stacked sensors change to 12 bit to help mitigate rolling shutter
Was quite interesting, I don't think the R50 switches, but I haven't checked
Wouldn't be surprised if it does thi
Outtake from one of my landscape photography trips...
Those times you took the Camera out instead of the rifle
The backstraps on a hare are delicous
Unironically had one of those moment not too long ago
i be so. i think doing alot more studio photograp and sports so more battery life would be nice. oh and vert grip too
Took out the camera because some fairy wrens were around the farm.
Then while following them I see a fox slink off
by the time I'd gotten back to the ute and grabbed the 223 it was gone
dangit
I reckon it'll come this year too tbh
I expect another 2 apsc cameras tbh
They have a void to fill
I'd scare the crap out of the locals even subsonic rounds would be loud enough to set off every dog in the area.
I have my list of classes I donāt know what any of them are yet
One is psychology and one is my cert iii thatās all Iām certain about
holy shit I'm still in mild disbelief that I was actually talking to north borders on IG holy š
whats the average gaming pc build price these days
Depends on your expectations
Resolution, refresh rate, and whether or not you care about playing on highest settings or not
If all from scratch, I'd take a guess and say around $2k at this point to get going given video cards are just f'ing expensive now
Looking at building one for a mate. Just 144hz max, 1080p, high, to very high settings
Just saying: accolades from competition awards are short lived, I know a guy who won a freaking ARIA, that year he was "that guy who won an aria" two years later, people were back to asking "who the hell are you?"
Could go something like a 3060ti tbh
Hell even my 4060 runs 1080 ultra on every game at atleast 60fps
Most are 144+
I've got a R5 5600x and a 2070 super and mine runs 3 screens and high settings ingame fine
But my pc is like old
I mean you can always futureproof him
Am5 for the win
Support till 2027, immediate yes for me
thats two years lol. He's not gonna spend 2000+ for two years support
I'd just say 5070 (assuming not immediate build, 4070 if it is), r5 amd cpu (so 9600x if current gen), then just figure out the rest around it, probably end up being somewhere around that $2k mark.
But yeah an older second hand card can get the job done to save $$, though worth stretching for a 4070 super or 5070 if possible, those cards are pretty solid price to perf, only time they'll struggle in the near future is 4k
My build was 1.5k, but I spent too much on other things instead of GPU
Bigger budget then ofc can bump cpu or more/faster ram or whatever, though doesn't matter too much for gaming, most modern games are more gpu bound
I've got 6000mt and cl36 and it's fine
avi aus hasnt contacted me yet regarding my appication for cert II air maintnace
i am anxious now
Really? it looks fairly rural, is it closer to suburbs than it looks?
Still rurally zoned and far enough from the road, and large enough with owners perms you'd still be able to right? @fiery island
Doing cert iii aviation - remote pilot with skills generation
I remember the days when farmers would pay me to take care of foxes, cats used to follow me up the hill in the small hours of the morning hoping for some rabbit.
I'm in a semi-rural area, yes. But where a lot of people in the area have big dogs cooped up in small yards for "security". It's a cruel thing I tell you.
crosssain lamp is literslly crossaint dipped in resin
Thereās no way this is good
jut get a proper rainbag atp
Nah this seems cool lol
I've been tempted to get one, it's only 5 bucks lol
Nah just for the sun Iāve got a PD shell for the rain
why would you need to protect it from the sun?
Theoretically it should keep the sun out of my eyes and make it easier to see my lcd on bright days
isnt that what an VF is for?
Who TF uses the LCD to compose tho
VF clears
Unless I'm trying to get a low angle I'll always use the vf
the only time i use lcd for composing is in studio
Thereās functions that I might use that my vf doesnāt do
Image playback
such as?
my evf does that
Iām on dslr I donāt have an evf
ohhh
You donāt get image playback on the ovf
but sad
I may change my shooting mode or white balance to suit conditions
Thatās on my lcd is it not?
I canāt do that in my vf
Iād use that umbrella as a novelty instead of something Iād properly use
Let's goo
I was gonna order a 65w charging brick to arrive tmmr but mum won't let
Me leave Saturday at about 9
Thatās probably why
Was gonna arrive Friday night tho lol
Check the border patrol stuff
You might be able to
I wonder if the ao people will let my 70-300 in š
Lenses are supposed to be under 200mm
It's not on the camera ATM so that increases my chances ig
My bag is meant to come today
Happy Friday sheeple
Time to setup the new bag
says that organic commercially produced powder is fine
but whey protein contains dairy snd thats kinda limited so yeah.....
God I fucking HATE that
Well that is flat out offensive.
to who?
The French.
Having a working dog like a Border Collie stuck on a 468sqm block with the house taking up 90% of the space is criminal.
Yeah give the pupper a huge yard to run around in
only in it for the money lol
Do it for the experience tbh, it's fun and money should just be a nice added bonus
well then you're in the wrong place.š
Buy me 600mm f4 when you get that much money plz
i would like a phase one XF IQ4 with Schneider kreuznach 150 2.8 LS please
how much is that
What the hell would you do with it?
Probably be looking around $70-80k AUD if I had to guess
Not too bad
How you would pay to insure it? how would you maintain it? - leaf shutters need to be serviced every 20,000 firings.
i wouldnt insure it
and how will you store the huge files?
also since when did i hear about LS needing servicing ever 20k
hard drives?
i could also just use the focal plane shutterbinstead on the XF body
It's in the copal manuals, Copal being one of the more prominent leaf shutter manufacturers.
schneider uses copal shutter?
young people these days, big ideas but no idea on how to sustain them.
1tb hard drive is enough for 3.3K 300mb files
Seiko also make them, and they have similar servicing guidelines.
And what happens if that drive fails? You're going to need a RAID enclosure and the skills to manage it.
as storage capacity goes up the need to manage increases exponentially.
Aim for the stars and if you miss you'll land on the moon
.......... bruh ATP youre gonna need to ask what happens when power goes out
shame, my files are gone sadly
UPS
and make a lovely crater, a warning for everyone else.š
Dare to dream digitalis
raid cards arnt even that expensive
if you asked me all of these wuestion before i got my s1 i would bave a hard time
I have a single 2tb hard drive for all my images
I have to offload 5k tonight before I leave for NZ tmmr
And recharge both my batteries š
Actually ones still basically full it should be ok
my 1tb hard drive is failing so im leaving it off until i get a new one
i dont shoot enough to have to offload 5k pictures
I need to get some internal HDDs for my PC I think
I do action tho
so do i
They took my tele from me cause it was too long btw
So I made do with the 18-45 and a 4x crop
confiscated?
They should be ok without zooming much more
Nah just couldn't bring it in
I've got it back now
wtfffffffff
that's on the kit lens
You just can't crop lol
They're prolly not very sharp on my monitor but it was a fun experience
why cant you take long tele?
I'll get media next year so I can take a bigger tele
Considered professional etc
Their pros don't like competition.
brehhhhh
It's a 70-300 lol and the max focal length was 200mm lol
I should've told her it was a 70-200 lmao
They wouldn't have known
Unless they read it
what cam does digitalis have?
Adult money camera prolly
Take a mirror lens, they are quite compact and have absurd focal lengths. 400mm in the size of a coke can.
Nah it's the focal length they care about not the physical length
The canon EF 70-300 isn't very long lol
First gen
I recall canon having a diffractive optics lens in the 70-300mm f/4~5.6 category, it was tiny.
Not sure if it's my one, but I'd be the best example of seeing it if it is mine lol
Half my Sandown 500 photos were shot on f29
I forgot an ND filter
i can use iso 50 lol
I don't have a high end body lol
goodbye sharpness. Diffraction would have made a mess of the details.
how much did tour r 10 cost?
S1 was 1K too
I can send you some of the RAWS, but the details stayed pretty sharp tbh
Lol f32
CLEAN YOUR GODDAM SENSOR
Bar the mark on my sensor which I'm aware of, you see anything else
i had to cut my sensor cleaner to fit canon aps C
iso 50 is extended, it doesn't actually do anything useful
but at least its a full stop of nd worth
You'll still clip with the same exposure time
I will have 0.5-5000mm f/.001L IS USM for ef mount then
Doubt you'd see a difference between the two tho
That's not how extended iso works
wut
Extended iso is the same as adjusting exposure slider in post, it's different to native iso
Only it gets baked into the raw
and highlight detail still gets blown to hell.
at least mine exists
Yep, it doesn't allow for any longer exposure than base native iso does, things will still clip at the same exposure time
also F0.95 means that the aperture blade is bigger than the entersnce pupil right? or focal lengh maybe?
f0.95 means the aperture (as in light collecting diameter) is longer than the focal length yes
fstop is aperture (in mm)/focal length
We will make mine exist and it will be the size and weight of the 70-200 f/4 non is for ef
physics says fuck you
Well I say fuck you to physics we will reinvent physics to make this lens possible!
thats not how it works
None of the subject in focus ahh
The ultimate in bokeh.
this is the money forward logic we need
No subject just bokeh???
I like that
Too bad thatās how it works now
A random person made a discovery based on physics, Iām a random person in theory couldnāt I do the same?
I really need to sleep whatever this brain fog is off
@static ruin im watching the video you sent about supercells (i only just got around to it and turns out i have already watched it but didnt actually try to understand it) and was wondering what the cold and warm front looking lines are in these diagrams, is it because inflow and updraft go towards the storm and are hot and humid and then the rfd and ffd are cold and moving away from the storm, or is the direction of the bumps and triangles not mean anything
where is the )?
holy shit it's raining like crazy rn
A bus just hit a drive by on me as well and I'm soaked
Red is inflow, blue is outflow. Linked it as somewhat of a general video, RFD only happens in supercells (fortunately), is just an interaction between dry air in the mid levels and the rotating updraft, but can be very destructive winds.
Edit, should also you're on the mark with the inflow (feeding the updraft) being the warm and humid air, the outflow of a storm is much cooler, and can (and does) act as a mini cold front as it propagates away from a storm, can trigger new storms to form
I read just this message and had a heart attack lol
Speaking of supercells though, apparently this formed up in Northern NSW this evening, supercell, can see the little wall cloud dropping
FFD is over off to the left
Messy structure though and radar presentation also a mess, think I see where the "hook" is, but yeah it's definitely on the weaker end of them
Speaking of storm, got a little one popping up here
Lmao
I got it on video as well
Gotta be funny asf tho lol
Weather's mid while we're in NZ, might get some storms so I'll see what I can do puth
And probably my last little storm nerdy stuff for the night, storms happening west I'm pretty sure are from orographic lift which is mentioned in the vid at some point. Not often we get winds blowing East to West (well NE to west), rain seems to be pushing in, then just developing into storm as it hits the mountains, then changing to a more SSE direction to follow the ranges. Been a while since we've had a weather system like this
was driving back from canberra through a few storms as we went down to bermagui area for a couple day holiday
Ah nice, that just now, or a bit ago?
Odds of rain tmr in the city?
I'd say very high, but given the nature of the weather system.. who the heck knows, it's a strange one
Should get the most late morning, but subject to change
Easy
a bit a go, drove through the remnants of a severe thunderstorm that matured in golbourn and there was a fair bit of rain, great storm day today, im waiting for all the chasing videos to be edited, there was a lot of activity
I was living in Melbourne last year, storms there were flipping weird - all hail and torrential rain and the next a hour it would be sunny and humid.
Ah nice. I think I'd seen photos of it then if it's from recent, 4th December looking back at the photos I'd seen
Storm chaser that lives around wollongong ended up in Goulburn, was mostly pulse storms
i honestly might go to live on like nsw queens land border one day if i get really into storms but its so far from where i live now i dont know how i could go without seeing any of my family for so long
yeah, i know the guy, he runs the illawara storm chasing page
Yep, that's the one
There was a setup I wanted to chase around Vic border a few months ago, didn't make it because.. reasons, was a beautiful supercell outbreak setup. Was a few of them down there this season
illawarra has had a terrible year, there has been like maybe 2 severe thunderstorms if you could call them that, i know its been an all round bad year but there has just been no shear so the updraft gets choked (i learnt how that works, very proud of myself lol) and they rain dump up on the escarpment
Our area has been pretty rubbish this year, but just how it goes, some years are great, others less so
i think i knpow the outbreak you are talking about
Late October/November is best for more structure, we still get the polar jetstream being more active, so better chance of higher and more organized wind shear. Summer storms are still frequent, but often end up with little shear, hence the pulse thunderstorms as of late rather than any real organized system
yeah, upside of our storm season coming to an end is that the ameraican one is starting, and as much as i hate the americans, gotta love the storms (that was a joke btw, i got timed out for trying to banter with seth once about nz and he didnt know it was a joke so now im very cautios about it lol)
lol
Been tracking storms for a few years on radar for the US, hoping to make it there one season to chase
Confident enough to not get myself killed... But no doubt will still be pants shitting, makes our most severe storms look like childs play
it was my first day on the server as well bro and i felt so sad, i ngl almost left the server because of that
yeah lol, might do a gap year to do that, maybe backpack around the world with my mates or something, get kidnapped the whole deal
lol
Heck even last couple of weeks during winter Texas and Louisiana been casually getting tornado outbreaks
i still find it crazy how styropyro mangaged to get a tornado on video next to literal snow
I am travelling to the most bumbfuck nowhere Sydney suburb to see some helicopters
Aināt no way Iām actually going to wilberforce
Well.. I suppose it's a good thing we didn't get remotely close to the amount of rain expected over the catchment
But yeah don't hear much about wilberforce
Fun
What birds are they gonna have up?
412s and AS350s
try where me and @coral crescent live
we have a town called humpty doo, which sounds like the name of the egg from that one nursery rhyme whete a personified egg falls and cracks its head
lole
As usual long term forecast continues to tease. Tuesday looking interesting, very high cape, low to moderate shear, organized so supercell potential.. I have 0 doubt the forecast will fall apart entirely over the next day or 2 before Tuesday. But in saying that, it's the sort of forecast I'd love to see a storm in, but better if it doesn't happen in populated areas. Worth keeping an eye on to see how it develops
And if you dont have a huge yard, get a breed that's comfortable indoors
not a working dog or gundog
am i cooked?
Christ
@static ruin im trying to find supercells on radar and was wondering if you think any of these might be supercells
Not sure if there's any today, Ive not looked at the bigger picture. Windy radar is only useful for general overview though, you typically can't tell whether it's a supercell with windy
yeah, i wanna get the radarscopepro thing i see people using but im to poor lol
Just checking them now, gimme a sec
Storm near Toowoomba isn't a supercell as far as I can tell, others I'm struggling to locate specifically. Though I don't think today is a day where we'll really see any supercells forming
ok
why is that? low shear?
i think atomoshpere is kinda stable as well
but idk, im not that good at this weather stuff yet
Yep. Supercells also require 'organized' shear in addition to just shear alone. We do get them, just not in a high frequency. just directional shear (which is what we usually get) just means updraft and downdraft will get separated, so you get longer living storms, they can organize into a line and such, won't become supercells though
You need directional shear organized as you move up for supercell
Other way today, is a huge area where it's generally unstable, also no real capping inversions, is why there's storms just firing up across a huge chunk of Eastern Aus. Just most aren't going to become anything significant
ok, were do you check the capping graph thing
i know what your talking about but i dont know where i would check that for free
if i can even
I just poked around on windy with the sounding, it's again not particularly high detail, but enough to get a general sense, just right click and area and go sounding, should be there on the free version
ok
i did not know you could do that
the lines seem very straight
which i think means that the tempreture just slowly drops as you climb and there is now small bit of warmer air
which i think is the cap, and then when that breaks you can get big storms because lots of energy builds up?
Heck to use real data from Sydney airport, this is a sounding from this morning. Conditions would have changed since, only one balloon released in the morning. Right hand red line is Temp, left hand red line is dew point, you'll see it just generally remains slanted over to the left. The area between the temperature and grey line is where the cape value comes from (aka instability), you'll see it just basically sits off to the right of temp
So once the ground heats up to temp, convection will just start without any extra forcing due to lack of a cap, hence just widespread storms
It can happen yes. Caps are a double edged sword, there can be days with amazing storm potential, but the cap holds and you just get blue sky, but yeah it can do the reverse, and allow more ground heating, so more energy builds up before the storms fire up
ok, it feels good to be learning stuff lol, i feel like ive had the dunning kruger affect and i was in the valley of despair for a while because i wasnt bothered to learn all the thing i didnt understand
And with the wind barbs on the side with altitude, there's bugger all wind and it's just chaotic, hence storms are for the most part short lived
It's an endless rabbit hole, there's plenty of people that make me feel dumb when it comes to this stuff lol
yeah lol, i think its good to start early, which is why im not to worried about learning it all fast
so with the wind direction do you just want a gradual change of like 90 degrees from surface for rotation of the updraft
Just been a lot of repetition for me, and I just try to observe what happens sometimes even if nothing eventuates
For supercells yes. Wouldn't stress over soundings too much while learning, this was what it looked like on the forecast day of when Vic had a few tornados back in late August
is that top bit a hodograph?
So yeah you see the wind bards shift from SSW towards E as you go up altitude, also with increasing strength
Yes
I'd explain hodograph, but it's one of my big weak points. I know how to read them to know if tornado potential, that's about it
It does tell a lot, but I'm honestly fairly clueless on interpreting it to what will happen otherwise lol
i very slightly almost understand it for tornado potentioal and movement and location on the storm but only because i play this one roblox tornado chasing game
Yep
The key part for tornados is mostly just in the curvature in the lower levels of the hodo
yeah
I was so annoyed I couldn't make it down there for this day lol, was such a tease watching it on radar
just out of curiosity what would have increased the chance and intensity of tornadoes for that day, like i conditions were perfect
Just stronger shear and more instability towards the bottom, otherwise it was honestly just a textbook tornado setup even by US standards, it was very unusual
Bom confirmed one tornado, another 2 damage paths were found for right where tornado signature was on radar, but bom is hopeless and never confirmed the others. Amusingly, not a single one of the tornado producing storms got a severe warning either when they were producing lol
so what indexes would more shear and lower instability be, because i know there is a few types of cape and different wind shear metrics
What do you mean what indexes
I don't pay too much attention to specific values, only real thing if it answers the question is just that 1 and 3km HEL values noted there being higher, basically just a measure of vorticity. There are other factors that go into play like alignment of vorticity relative to storm inflow which can impact how strong, or whether it produces at all, but that's getting into detail that I'm still very much learning
But yeah it's stuff that doesn't apply too much for Aus (usually), for here key is honestly mostly just in instability, any capping inversion and whether there's going to be enough forcing to break it, and general shear. Typically we only get directional shear, hence lack of tornados and supercells for the most part, get more squall line type things
Today is just a mess, no cap, ~1000ish cape in a lot of areas which isn't high, but enough for decent storm, but lack of shear means they just pop up and die fast. In the process the cold outflow acts as a cold front, so you just see more popping up around it given atmosphere is already unstable
like the different mesasurments like surface cape and srh and ml cape and lifted index and those kinds of things
As for radar mentioned earlier, the free version of this should be more than enough, still get a bit more than bom out of it https://metcentre.weatherwatch.net.au/?page=2dradar®ion=071&range=128
Advanced Weather Forecasting Tools by WeatherWatch Australia
yeah i use this a fair bit, but windy is a bit easier to navigate so i often forget to use it
Ah fair. I still use windy for general overview, makes it much easier
If you're interested in more local storm predictions, Sydney weather nerds FB page is pretty good, he often does little live streams if there's activity potential, has far more knowledge than me on it, particularly for the local factors at play
Bit out of your region, but close enough to still be somewhat relevant
1km is just helicity between ground and 1km, 3km is just the same but up to 3km
ok thanks for the help, ill let you get back to whatever you were doing
Not doing much, hoping for little storm, had a few rumbles earlier
Just not worth any chase since they die off so fast, and aren't particularly amazing to begin with
Ahhh gotcha
Had plenty of close lightning late last night which was fun, within a km. All shrouded by rain, but I enjoyed the rather loud thunder
Yeah my room kept getting lit up
We landed in Christchurch guys
Solid flight, just gotta get Sims here cause roaming is so fucking expensive
I'm 2 hours ahead now tho, it's a bit odd
The young ones always have trouble staying upright on powerlines.
I think Galahs just like doing that
when was this lmao?
Sounds great
it was my first day on the server sometime in early 2023

dw, just typical kiwi behaviour from seth
this is why Aussies clear kiwis
oath
all i see is either storm talk/how storms work. or aviation here
I've not done much else, I try to pull back on the storm stuff until asked or I'm actively going after them. Basically what I switch to during Spring/Summer
I need to get out at some point again to get more wrensday photos for bungins
More piccies, making me late to see the missus. Second one was a bit of a snapshot but couldnt NOT pullover for a photo
That's always the worst not being able to pull over somewhere with big photo potential
Yeah, wish there was nicer subjects around the second one, but it is what it is. First photo horribly compressed in disc
Or me saying random unrelated things
who reckons this bloke likes my photos
i send landscape stuff sometimes
lol this is what I've had for the last few days lmao
Check north borders latest post on ig
Which one are you
I see
Last one
Follow deserved man
aussie sucks
Cheers
I'm on a shoot rn
Gonna head down to Milsons point
not where I am lol
I'll be honest, feels pretty basic, but it's well executed so I still like it
Christchurch is freezing rn
Yeah not wrong
I'ma get food at Burwood tonight as well
I've been dying to visit the Chinatown there properly for the last 2 years lol
I've taken a few photos so far in NZ, but the city is boring so I'm waiting till we leave and go exploring
Wander around sooner or later you might find something interesting to shoot
fuck yeh aviation mentioned š
photography lounge when aircraft that isnāt fighter jet:
Honestly real
I don't think my photo of a classic race car did anywhere near as good as my mid photo of a Porsche carrera
I'll also have to mention this thunderstorm dissipating in front of me, few nice cloud to ground strikes before it did, weather gods continue to throw random little storms. Sadly no good photos.
Mostly just me complaining about the heat and humidity
You get some where it just barely works, or for whatever reason has been left on heat
very cool
When it's not a fighter jet fewer upvotes sure, could always be a car where it turns into downvotes
you're in alice breh
š
I think more people in here know car photography than they do aviation
People are more critical of far photos then
Meanwhile the same people go āomg fighter jet upvoteā when itās shit
Sydneys such a vibe though holy shit
Fuck Alice man
I'm enjoying this while I can, then y12 is gonna fuck me over
yay can't wait to try and get into med school
I suppose Sydney is alright
Its a fat break from Alice lol
I know, I'm not being entirely serious with my comment
melbourne was such a joy to me comapred to darwin
For me is the usual thing, when you live somewhere it can be easy to forget how good it is
you know what I mean???
yeah sounds about right
wdym?
Y'know the break from going somewhere like Darwin and Alice to Melbourne and Sydney
yeah
im gonna really miss the $1.50 fried rice from jakarta that tastes better than any fried rice in darwin
with th eperk of it being open till 1 AM
Mitsuya cider drink and lollies š
Honestly I'm based but Melbourne clears Sydney tbh, night life and everything else is just better
They're both good for certain things but to me Melbourne has better things that I enjoy
haha let's go
69696969696969
Sydney kinda nuked its own night life years many ago when they started putting heavy restrictions on everything late at night many years ago. Is bouncing back as time goes on, but not a quick process
Unsurprisingly, the star city casino was basically the only place that got an exemption to all the restrictions
I tend to want to get away from the city so doesn't bother me too much, either mountains out west, or I need to get out to the national park South more often
Honestly I don't like the night life, but everything being open late is lovely
Things being open late require demand, so don't need to directly like the activities that drags bigger crowds in, has an impact beyond that
Being able to go to Coles at like 11pm and get food is great, we weren't able to do that in syd
I guess people in Sydney sleep earlier too lol
Catching up lex
I canāt really talk though I only have 79
Kmarts are open 24/7 though, atleast some here. If I need to go, love going at some silly time at night, 0 crowd, it's great
I haven't done much advertisment, but I'm starting that now
Not mine
I havenāt done any I just have mates
Some of my mates follow mine, but I havent really told them to
Iāve only got 42 views in the last 30 days
I havenāt told anyone to follow my account but if I have my mates unlocked phoneā¦..
also howdy peeps
May aswell...
I may have followed myself when my mates haven given me their unlocked phones and I may have done it a number of times
The follow rate grows exponentially honestly
The more followers the better
And networking helps heaps, cause people advertise your photos to their friends
fuck I should sleep, it's 12am here
Cya guys
Ok going to somewhat break said rule I mentioned on avoid storm chatter.. @neon notch check Wednesday, been watching it on long term for a couple days. If it holds remotely similar.. looking at huge potential for widespread destructive storm. Specifics I'll wait till tomorrow, but seeing all models mostly agree, could be a legitimately scary event
Syd and down past Wollongong in firing line, at this point I think it'll mostly be areas impacted that'll shift, is a rare moment I want it to fall apart before the day
oooh sounds good, ill check it out, what do you use to check that?
Happy Monday, Aussies
Windy for general overview, weatherwatch for more in depth (it is paid however), and just watching satellite. Windy will suffice for now anyway since there's variables at play. I'll probably say more tomorrow. if things look similar tomorrow afternoon, I'd not be surprised to see.. stronger words on boms forecast, right now there's still ways for it to fail, just has extremely high potential severity ceiling
G'day
Shoot this weekend
God I hate how fucking late the sunset is in Syd rn
I wanna get home decently and also do night shoots, but it's at fuckin 8pm
Iām shooting some Muay Thai fights on the weekend thatāll be fun I reckon
Muay Thai is good shooting the Wai Kru makes for some cool shots
Sounds about right, dst is more of a pain
Now imagine if NSW didn't have fake time
Only upside is later sunrise

We are also further south, so daytime would be longer here compared to Qld and NT even with that aside during Summer
My sunrises are at 5.46 at the moment. It's annoying that I can't even bring myself to getting up for work lately let alone that early
i have to questions, how do you check shear forecasts/is there such a thing as a sounding forecast?
Just either sounding in windy and look at wind barbs at given location, or select wind -> change altitude, you'll notice it ramps up over us at about 3000m for wed. Otherwise the non GFS soundings I get are all behind paywall unfortunately
what weather apps/services/websites to you think are the most worth paying for?
For the most part I just use windy and weatherwatch, windy I keep year round since it's also useful for astro/clouds and general purpose, weather watch I only keep for storm season
Radarscope similar, though it's biggest use is just convenience of tracking what's going on while driving (I try to avoid hail damage, succeeded so far), and off season I use it for US storms
Can chuck up some sounding forecasts tomorrow when there's more confidence, or just DM so I don't fill Aussie lounge
tbh I'm just use to it now
I was trying to ease up, then weather gods are like let's put major event up this week as a possibility
It's kind of like when your partner is really into something you don't care about
lol
You just let it slide because it's nice to see them excited about something
Is also a good chunk of my photography this time of year, though most photos turn out mediocre, it died out as I got camera out
Shite. where's that? Looks like plenty of potential regardless of storm
It's just near the mountains near Sydney
this looks like a cool place for photography (ik it feels weird to be talking about that nonsense, like its not even 4000 cape) the sorta marshy area
It's 8pm here in NZ, and the sun is still really high lol
It sets at 9
Oh christ that's even worse lmao
Sounds awful
I can imagine astro in NZ Summer. "Alright it's astro dark, can finally get to observing"... 5 minutes later "Well, it's time to pack up"
I'm going to try astro once we leave the city but yeah ik what you mean
On the upside, I'm still 2 hours behind so 9pm is really like 7pm for me still
So yeah some of those pages picking up on it and also noted the severity of it, "gorilla hail", destructive winds, tornado is very much possible, so yeah still continuing to shape up to be a potentially very serious event
Can chuck you some soundings tomorrow if you're curious, just send friend request so I dont't spam here, can dm
tornado very possible seems good
ok friend me
idk about good lol, but yeah I've put in for Wednesday off, hopefully chase, high chance I'll be shitting myself if this pans out
It's one of those I'll absolutely love the storm structure situations, but rather nervous if it turns out just for the actual impact given it'll hit populated areas
lol
Mostly just have to work out chase area, going to need good roads incase it changes fast
Happy Tuesday, Aussies
Yep, smeets vacation is definitely over, back to wishing happy weekdays
@static ruin you reckon it's gonna rain in the city today?
Merry hump day
Maybe, I've not looked too much for this afternoon
Possible storms last I checked, though my focus has been entirely on tomorrow
My 5 second look says unlikely unless a little storm somehow makes it, but they're going to struggle near the CBD today
At Bondi right now touring my cousin from the Phillipines around (no I donāt want to be here) but the we are gonna go to digidirecrt before we go home so it works out
I would say I hate Sydney but I might offend someone so I dont hate Sydney
Is it still looking good?
Very, I'm rather nervous for what could happen if it hits the potential. Heck some of the charts I use, some of the indexes are just off the scale, it's not a normal event here
my bank account thanks me
I was debating going Bondi today for a shoot lmao
Rocks + beach + slow shutter is always a good combo
Still think Sydney is fine, just a day to be somewhat aware of radar. Little storm NW of Richmond with likely >5cm hail. Sydney may get something later, there is potential for hail if things get going
Flip side is could make for more dramatic photos if it does kick off and it's not too bad
Already going home, I want to head to a lookout called drawing room rocks for sunset, it was meant to be high cloud and no low or mid but it seems to be burning off but the view will still be nice, just maybe not the best photo
Storm like activity up this way itās pretty overcast and quite warm thereās some thunder starting just now
I can see some cumulonimbus firing up at Wolli creek looking west
I donāt know what cumulonimbus is but weāve got some thunder
i tried doing landscapes and yeah..... its just not for me
Just don't find it fun, or just not had much luck?
It's an oddly difficult genre, frustrating thing for me is finding a beautiful location but finding 0 compositions lol
A month ago...
Nice
We're just getting a teaser on radar of what's to come tomorrow, seen a couple of supercells and likely >5cm hail on radar over our ranges
Fortunately over empty mostly inaccessible land
From what I understand cloud-to-cloud lightning rarely shows up on the radar due to it producing a weaker signal? any truth to that?
Not sure, never paid attention to that type of thing
Wouldn't be surprised, I do see often you'll hear thunder without it showing up on a lightning tracker, so could be related to that
But if storm is active with CG's, you usually see the area light up on the same map
I live up on a hill which means I get great views of the surrounding area - though it also makes me a prime target to cop a bolt too. Tend to pack it up when I smell ozone.
Usually a good idea, great for more distant lightning
My struggle is just geography, it's an awful area in general for storm photos and chasing here
Mountains only has single east to west road for large distance, city areas for obvious reasons is also a struggle
Distant lightning is really difficult to photograph because you need a fast lens to do it, and usually a long one so your lens selection is pretty much limited to primes to fight against flare from city lights - zooms aren't much good at handling flare due to their optical complexity.
That above shot was taken with a 90mm f/2.8 lens.
Don't need a fast lens at all, but yeah telephoto can be nice
Ah nevermind just read your comment properly. Depends on the zoom I suppose, mine don't really have issue with flaring
When you're shooting against ambient light pollution the lightning bolt exists for such a brief time, a slow lens is going to let less of that light in. You can compensate with a higher ISO but that involves compromises.
The closer the storm gets the more you can afford to stop your lens down, though at long distances i've used f/1.2 lenses wide open to capture lightning.
I know how it works, also done plenty of lightning photography
It's either then or daytime I open lens more otherwise you just lose contrast, but still never struggled at f4
have you ever used ligtning triggers? I've heard good things about MIOPS triggers.
I want to buy one someday, just keep putting it off
miops I've heard mixed stories, some love it, some say it has more issues at daytime, which is when I'd use it most. But whether that's the occasional bolt, or it consistently misses, idk
I think it's just highly situational.
https://lightningtrigger.com/ is a 90's type site lol, heard lots of praise on this trigger, but it's also $$$$
Espeically now with the AUD being absolute rubbish
Nearly all the lighting shots in their gallery have the lightning positioned against a dark sky.
Love boms forecast for tomorrow, "The chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening, possibly severe in the west".. I understand they're typically cautious, but god damn, feel it's a bit more than "possibly severe" tomorrow
Not bothered looking at the gallery, my comment was just based on word of mouth, but I've not looked too deeply into all of them
are you expecting Armageddon?
No
But it's by far the most significant forecast I've seen in many years, seen them occasionally mention specific threats, though understandably is rare
well I hope you get something from it...and not just getting drenched.
Had a day last year where they mentioned giant hail, though in the end the cap never broke and just mostly had blue skies lol
Guessing based on your photos, you're down somewhere more southern nsw or something? looks like beautiful landscape for those photos
I'm on the south coast of South Australia.
Oh fair, nevermind then. Somewhat reminded me of our highlands when I've driven down there
Distant lightning @ f/1.2 š
lol
I just took the shot to see if I could pull it off.
Done a few of those, last distant lightning shots weren't by choice. Was sitting on storm, issue is it was travelling at some ridiculous speed (I was barely keeping pace on highway), wanted coastal photos. Basically just picked a random spot, turned out it was entirely being redone, and all access blocked
By the time I reposition, was well off the coast
Still curious for tomorrow, surprisingly second wave may be possible, should be at night if it does happen
Looks like a great sunset spot
not much good location, or time limit becasue yknow family vacations. i guess not much luck (and missing money for ND filter)
esp going to darwin is gonna be much more difficult
and ig im more of. waterfall guy
for the luv of god sandbagggg
I just died on the inside looking at that
Was gonna buy a tripod today but they were sold out of the one I wanted
It works
Almost
Not really
what's the budget looking like
I got a cheap knf one and it's fine tbh
Just unstable at max height and with no much weight on it
Understandable at the price point tho tbb
I have the Manfrotto Element itās got twist legs I donāt like that but the thing is reliable
I don't like the twist legs on my knf one either
I've just always preferred the better mechanical feedback of levers, but is of course personal preference
And just fine adjustments twist seems awkward
1dx mark ii with 3 batteries and a 500 f/4.5 for 1700 on marketplace?
Lens has seen some usage but what do you expect
Steal
Honestly a scam tho
The 1dx2 itself goes for not far off that and a prime tele and 3 batteries are worth quite a bit
We're getting there
Yeah probably
holy damme
I went to the ao, don't be surprised
Happy hump day, Aussies
Is very happy, am off today.. Trying to decide where I shall go
Iāll ask my parents about checking out this ad on marketplace for the 1dx mark ii and 500 4.5 they want 1700 but the ad has been up for 22 weeks I could offer 1000-1250
How was the AO lex?
Did you decide?
No, it's a pain, it's times like these I hate our geography lol
Only good thing is it'll likely be widespread enough to probably get something good, just don't want to screw myself over for big line of storms later
Fair enough
Bom did finally note large hail potential, so there's that atleast
I'm hoping we get storms here soon. Its fucking gross
Probably get something tonight, it's a pretty big weather system
Also, everytime I look in #šøć»fancy-lounge and see the 3d printing nerds talk, I realise how much I take aussie lounge weather talk for granted
We got some lighting the other night, was tempted to try and get something but nothing viewable underneath the clouds unfortunately
Just to make Puther proud
But yeah same system, just probably won't be as significant way up north, lightning for 5pm (timing can and will vary), so yeah you'll probably see something
byoooty
Alice as empty as always
can't wait to get back
What time do you fly out?
And hot as hell at the moment
@sudden karma I found an email from maccas in my spam folder I didnāt get hired
We went on the media day, cause it was the only day I could go to. The end of the day was great cause it was 2 games, but the rest of the day was just them practising
:(
musnt need people then
don't loose your hopes lol, can always apply again later/ work somewhere else
that would have been cool, you have any photo's you can share currently?
Id have to pull up my laptop but yeah
I tried experimenting with what they let me bring in, my tele is illegal apprently
So I had to use the 18-45
telephoto is illegal? what cabbage where they smoking?
so they wouldnt let you bring in your 70-300 since you would be professional???
since its above 200mm yes
its competition and professionals hate it
these are the kind of images i was limited to
digital zoom 4x
bit unfortunate but theyre still decent photos and good experience shooting something other then cars
i bought my 1st camera
have you taken on any advice other than the camera
cause dude i love the enthusiam for taking motorsport photos but shit takes time. Rome wasnt built in a day afterall
yeah
i have a FZ80D which has very good zoom
the camera should just come in time for a local race
can you bring teleconverter?
so ill be running around the crowd w my camera
when the 60Mp camera makes sense for once
wouldve been nice to have more mp there yeah haha
interesting choice
did you get it new
i mean you already have a 24Mp canon APS-C so 1.6X crop instead of the usual 1.5X
then i got my lowepro camera bag from Ted's
you coudlve done alot better ill be honest
we will see in 2 weeks
yup so it was a 5.6x zoom from 45mm
lol
i have a weekend coming up of racing and ill be running around w that
can you not bring a teleconverter? might make image softe but like range?
i dont own one
i wasnt expecting them to be so bitchy about focal length
sigh, R7 33Mp would come in here useful eh?
ill be honest youd prolly have been better off with an 80d and a 100-400 or some other tele
yup
that suckkkkssss
r50 would be a great choice if you save a bit more and sell the panasonic bridge cam
having this is so useful
HEY! i have those too (cries in DFD)
2Kg Barely even telephoto setup š
with my tele my setup is just over 1kg
like 1.05kg
thats lite
your camera is also like quintuple the price of mine lmao
how much did you pay for your R50
1k
i paid the same
at least is pocketable
yes but, 96Mp multishot
also has XQD slot
and round eyecup
AND THICC GRIPPE
Thatās rather odd
Time to scour marketplace again to try find a second body!
Used gear market here is so weird
I think this is the first time I've seen storms stretching the entirety north south in NSW, some regions of the squall been getting >100km/hr winds
Is about as weak as they come and insignificant, my first funnel cloud nonetheless. Storm became supercell for a very short time
Well that cool change was a thing.. morning view on the South Australian coast.
Very nice
Agreed, I want used lenses but they're expensive compared to the US
I just want a cheap lens lol
Are you guys getting second hands lenses off FB mp
Thanks natu
Couldn't do it without you
HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE MOST INSANSE STORM OVE EVER SEEN
WILL SEND VIDEOS AFTER
It is CONSTANT lightning
Thatās me shooting out towards the worst of the storm to show the lights how thatās going on
woahh
Holy storm, itās calming down now but that was probably the best storm Iāve seen in my storm watching career (itās been like 1 year, will post pics and other stuff when I get home)
1 year doesn't matter, the weather system as a whole is probably once in a decade type stuff
brief funnel cloud, insane shelf cloud, had some beautiful storms today
The shelf cloud was so beautiful
Also I thought I saw a tornado and then I realised it was the steam from the steel factory, it was only visible with lightning strikes and it honestly looks like a funnel
Seen one video of what looks to be a tornado in Sydney, just waiting for more context to confirm if it actually was. Wouldn't be shocked, conditions definitely allowed it
Was shortly before I had to bail. gone back on radar and confirmed it did have likely large hail (~4cm), so definitely made the right call running to the car early lol
Lounge but australian ā
Storm Lounge but Australian ā
It's photography related, I produced photo
imma meme it to death
Understandable
Taken most of it to DM's anyway, so after this probably won't hear as much
Lounge but Australian aka The Storm Lounge
They need to make a new group for storm chasing stuff
Iām literally like a feverish gambler I canāt leave, Iām just sitting here waiting for just one more
There already is one itās here https://discord.com/channels/728905379274162177/1118672425165533295
The Aussie lounge itās basically a storm chasing hub
not funny didnāt laugh
Look online thereās probably servers for storm chasing
yeah but the vibes arenāt the same ya know
If thereās a storm chasing server with a channel specifically for Australians would that work for you?
should i just make a storm chasong lounge then?
We've taken most to DM's, so it'll ease up
im ready to hit enter
Nah it has to be a photography server with a sub channel thatās for Australians, with a second sub channel inside the sub channel for storm stuff in Australia
There's probably weather communities, but otherwise just keep it to dm, is understandably annoying to those who care less lol
i think i should just hit enter should i? other ppl might be able to join in?
Nah, don't think anyone else is that active with it
My camera is soaked, will send photos to make up for clogging up the channel with storm talk so I donāt get banned lol
Just send them in free for all or something, can tag me if you want
Yeah probably
photo I got of the storm that hit my city
Holy fuck
Fucking mental
Thatās a good storm all the lightning punching out over all that red and pink and purple is gorgeous
@static ruin GOT ANY PHOTOS FROM LAST NIGHT???
Some, not sorted through most yet
I had a small aquaplane while out, conditions definitely weren't great lol
yeah scary stuff
Where'd this cherzerd man come from
He's been around for a long time, just less active now
Usually when he comes back it also comes with some level of gas, so curious what the soon to be purchase is
i didnt get anything spectacular, a couple nice bolts, havent edited anything yet and frankly not bothered rn might to it tmr
and my lens was covered with rain so half of the shots i did get are fairly shit, but idm, i think i enjoyed the storm more than trying to photograph it
im going back to binge watching all of top gear and now the grand tour
I was looking at hasselblads recently haha
but! I have been very good and working 7 days hustling
downside not shooting haha
I rest my case
Blimey
my camera bag shipped POGGIES
Oh wow
@vivid verge @frozen lantern they just announced the US air force f22 raptor display team for Avalon
ok I'm 10 hours too late but idgaf
Yeah I donāt think Iāll get around to Avalon unfortunately
Iāll have some other commitments during that week
Ill take some photos for you dw
Iāll be coming off recruit training with the SES along with school I also donāt have the funds to go
F22 team announced it months agao
Sure Iād like to go down for Avalon but itās not bloody likely
Happy Friday
Holy fuck it's friday
Says the guy who goes to Townsville šš
Canāt even holiday no more without fellas talking shit
I donāt I havenāt been there in a decade
Have you been to cairns in the last decade?
If youāre bringing your camera Iāll share some spots
Yes, Iām there right now
Going out to the fights?
Iām a bit more moody at the moment a family member of mine has passed away recently so Iām dealing with all that
To the what?
Muay Thai tomorrow in Mareeba
Itāll be pretty good
I should be able to get ringside with my camera because I know one of the fighters and their coach
HAPPY FUCKIN FRIDAYY
damn bro whats wrong with Townsville
Oh cool
Im going to tinaroo tomorrow I think and doing some wakeboarding so wonāt be able to
Tinna is pretty good
Might go to Mareeba to the aviation museum tho later on in the week
Is that near the airport?
Alot
Crime!
FNQ got a tough issue with that
Get Bob Katter on it
There is so much youth crime in FNQ
If he had his way there wouldnāt be many criminals left up here
Is actually about the only thing I hear about
Bob Katter is too worried about the crocodiles
watch out for the duck lice !
But forreal, perfect time for tinaroo. Probably raining but at least its not hot as fuck
Itās overcast but not raining down here not sure how it is up on the tablelands
I'll be in Mareeba at the end of May
Iām headed up there tomorrow
I love the drive up there
Iām headed up for the Muay Thai fights but while Iām up there might stop at the airport and do my TIF
And theyāre booked out so there goes that idea
Sounds like something you'd have to book out weeks/months in advance
should be good
Itāll be good to get out on the lake itās fucking hot
Cold drinks and aircon all day everyday
wow what a cool photo
@nova pier Australian sighted
Heading out to a national park today, hopefully there's some waterfalls I can get long exposures of
Haven't really don't landscape photography seriously before, so it's kinda a good way to experiment before my next holiday
Dont forget your ND if thatās the case. I usually do
I only have the ND for the wide angle kit lens lol
Made the mistake of buying just that size, and it's 49mm š«
Should be alright thi
Worst case I use the sunnies as an ND
Are the waterfalls only from viewpoints? Canāt you get close?
Youāll just end up bumping the camera and make it blurry
I'm not sure, I've never been here
The 49mm might do you well. I usually just take my 24-70
I did it the other day with 1/10 to counteract that, and bar the actual optics looking shit, it didn't turn out too bad
It's a 18-45
Nice little focal range icl
Well there ya go. Youāre apsc as well arenāt you?
Did ya take ya tripod too? I always have to remind my mate for some reason
This is a good time for me to practise this sort of stuff cause I've never done it, so should be interesting to see what I can get
Yup OFC I'm bringing my tripod
My whole kit only weighs like 3kg lmao
He ended up buying a gorillapod actually and leaving it in his back pack with works really well
Jealous. If I take my a7rv, 24-70, 70-180, tripod and water and whatever else have you itās heavy as fuck
I brought most of my kit with me on this trip lol, up to colour filters for the kit lens
