wait 2 months for lightning on the front or side of a storm that is not rain obscured and frequent enough to actually capture (i cant drive so i cant really go anywhere other than just my home), it also has to be closer to night time or night time so the bolts are clearer and you dont need an nd filter, then set your iso as low as it goes (ussually base iso), stop down your apeture to like f11-f8 to get the most of your scene in focus (i did f11), then set your ss to like 15 seconds or something like that, if its this dark then it dosent matter to much but the longer it is the higher chance you get of capturing a full bolt, but it also increases noise on a digital sensor

i remember seeing the sky bright red at lik 10pm at night when driving home with my dad being at the top of the illawarra escarpment looking down and not knowing what it was, we thought there was an event on or maybe the steelworks was doing a particulary big burn but now i think about it, it was probably the aurora, also i think monday looks good for illwarra storm, high cape but i dont know how shear works so they might just sit on top of the escarpment

10pm I think was before the first major burst, 11:30 is the first big burst that would have been naked eye I'm aware of. Nature of Aurora does mean it may have just pushed up further in that line of sight also at the time, so entirely possible.

As for wind shear, that's an entire explanation. The short answer is wind hear is what allows a storm system to become organized and sustain itself, or with the correct type of shear, become a supercell.

Without any real shear you just get pulse storms, high cape low shear environment can produce little storms that briefly produce hail, but they die quickly after precipitation starts since it just chokes off the updraft

Depends on how far you want to dig into it, but yeah having a quick look at illawarra for Monday, this is Access model. My guess (as it stands now) is mostly pulse thunderstorm, "Maybe" a microburst with the dry air in the lower levels, though I'd not expect anything severe. Only thing is with those pulse storms is the outflow can trigger more storms, so can last longer if it does that

I'll see if I can find one, there is a great video on general storm formation, it's focused around supercells for the US, but goes back to basics, I can see if I can find. Can't remember if it mentions general shear or just more specific to organized shear for said supercells

Definitely worth going after for a photo if it's close, just wouldn't be the type of setup I'd spend significant fuel money travelling for, always potential for beautiful lightning, particularly down there

Yeah can't find anything specific to general shear off the top of my head, though the general gist of it is stronger winds (particularly in the mid level) tilt the storm on an angle, so rather than the precipitation falling in the updraft and choking the storm, it falls ahead, which allows the updraft to sustain itself, and become stronger.

Aside from that, also creates a little low pressure region in the updraft, high pressure in the downdraft, so you just get an overall stronger storm. Often times if you get a large region where storms can fire up and have decent shear, they eventually merge into a big squall line

Having a general overview for Monday, I think the potential bigger struggle for photographing storms will just be the rain, seems to be a heck of a lot of moisture build up in the atmosphere, so storms could very well just end up shrouded by it. Over next week and a half to 2 weeks models seem to think we could have a very wet period

Anyway time for me to go to bed, looking at a potential hike tomorrow morning.. funnily enough that is area similar to down there Monday, somewhat high cape, little shear. Only be small storms if any happen, but sure as heck don't want to get caught out if I do go out bush lol

I did photography for a motocross event a few years ago, one section of the course was through the middle of a dense pine tree plantation. Thankfully the organisers had a bike for me to get around on which made the whole affair quite enjoyable.

That's the fun thing about Motocross, they hardly ever have fences. Though you need to have superb situational awareness as accidents can mean you might have to dodge a riderless motorcycle travelling at speed from unexpected quarters.

Being autistic isnt a bad thing, but saying you're completely different from someone else is pretty bad imo. Autism is a spectrum, and in technicality we're all autistic, there's just different levels of severity. The only reason I think it's bad is that if you label yourself as autistic, and paint yourself in that light, you're potentially limiting yourself as some people may not want to work with you, or you might even blame your autism as the reason behind you not getting the shoot. Being autistic doesn't make you any better or worse than anyone else, so I just don't feel like it's needed. Just in general the paragraph itself is really long aswell, I'd definitely recommend making it short and sweet for the home page. You can always go into more detail on a seperate page explaining that you're autistic and it's turned you into a perfectionist beast. I don't mean any harm by this dude, just a general observation 🙏

Another thing, try get a custom domain, they're pretty cheap and it'll give you heaps of flexibility
