That cross is less to do with quality, and more the fact that Nisi is blocking off the VND from going further before physics issue (aka that cross) kicks in, it's why it's only "5" stops VND, they put a stop there to prevent you going further I'm guessing

VND is just 2 polarizers stuck together, have them rotated 90 degrees and no light passes, so technically they can go as many stops as you want, but physics makes it impractical

I use it for landscape time to time, in some cases it just cuts out reflections on rocks/leafs to pull more colour back in, other times it just helps cut out some haze if it's a wide open landscape, but ultimately all boils down to reducing unwanted reflections

Well it will be polar night going on at January at northern parts of Finland. So star and aurora photography is what you might want to do. Birds and wildlife might be quite difficult. In Helsinki there might be enough daylight and some birds to photograph. But Helsinki is always a bit so and so if you want to see snow and winter landscapes.

If you have to choose between Lapland and Helsinki then I would go to Lapland.
