if only we could train crocs to eat pollies
her fams big into 4 wheeling, we want to do the old tele track too
lmao
@late parcel u get any presents for xmas
yeah
a few
mum got me a hair curler, dad got me lollies, bro got me coffee grounds and my coworker made me a self care basket:) you?
ye nice
umm
I haven't gotten anything yet 😭
beanie, small USB fan for the desktop, some beard oil, and a 2024 horoscope book here.
aw 🫂
only thing I really want is a new film cam my olympus is broken it likes to rewind itself and not stop
beard oil?
yeah
oh yikes
so I have to use the whole roll then close
I tried to eyeball it last time but I lost 1/3 of my roll
I have a beard much like Gandalf
oh yikers
still waititng on that roll to get developed from teds
yup, beard guy. Love having a beard.
they take a while
10 day turnaround sent it in on the 21st
Im praying it gets here b4 new years
hopefully
mmm that reminds me that I need to get my Leica IIIf CLA'd
They usually send it to the store in Melbourne to get dev'ed and sent back
ah i gotta make a booking with my gp soon
We used to pack the big bag of film to send off to head office at the end of the week
they develop it in the one at pitt st im pre sure
i jokinly put on my friends blood pressure cuff and it was apparently veryyy high
at least I think/hope so
with a resting heart rate of 93..
how high?
gosh i cant remember
If it's 10 day turn around that's way too long if they have development on site it's way less than 10 working days
damn
are you a diabetic or overweight? That combined with high blood pressure and high resting pulse is not good
neither
her dad said could be caffeine overload and stress but heart problems ruun in my fam so im gonna be safe
my blood pressure has been all over the shop in the past 2 years
From the Canberra store we packed and sent to Elizabeth Street (head office) to have it developed, usually the scans come back digitally first and the negatives usually arrive a day or so after (couriered).
It's usually done at the end of the week
as low as 90/65 and as high as 135/90
i think mine was around 135/90
So in theory it arrives by the middle of the following week.
i think
that's bordering on high blood pressure (right on the cusp)
whenever ive had my checkups its been normal though
get them to do cholesterol count, RBC count, WBC count, blood sugars, kidney and liver function too
a simple blood test will cover all of them
if blood sugars are high, then they may want to do a fasting blood sugars test
make sure your GP does a ECG too
I'm proud to say that I was involved in computerising a heap of the record keeping for sending films around.
Canberra became a one horse town for film development when Big W and a local photo development shop closed.
So we had so much to deal with and a paper system was just not good enough when you're booking in several rolls at a time (think a giant bag of like 20 disposables).
@errant linden
had a full blood screening a few weeks ago and all was normal. low on iron but no anemia, not really a problem though
havent had an ecg in a while thouhg
eat more Red meat and vegetables high in Irons too (Brussel Sprouts and Mushrooms are good natural sources of soluble Iron in vegetables)
my GP chastised me a few months ago becuase he expects me to learn how to read an ECG chart lol

ew brussel sprouts 😂 i guess with the cost of meat going up so much i havent had much red meat... and being a gal... but im taking the iron supps, should be leveled out by now or soon
lmao
thats pre cool
oh lol, I thought you were a guy hahaha
lmao nah
im also prescribed some meds that can raise blood pressure but i havent taken them in probably 3 weeks so i doubt its that
The perfect Darth Vader Apology Accepted Apologize animated GIF for your conversation. Discover and share the best GIFs on Tenor.
careful, I heard hay is learning to punch back
had a big few weeks and need to catch up on a lottt of sleep (been getting 2-5 hours for the past few weeks)
that is NOT good
yikes, might leave splinters too
yeah its not
and Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo may join him
Merry Christmas mate
And so day #3? in a row begins of East coast battering by storms, already a couple of supercells up Newcastle way with giant hail
Little storm here I'm tossing up the idea of going after, went from light rain to hail on radar within 15 minutes, just hard to find spots for nice photo with where it is, want to avoid that holiday traffic also lol
I just saw a friend's photos on FB ... trees down all over their house and car. No power, no water, no services at all.
It's just starting to get dark and rumbling skies here, but it won't be as hectic here in Melbs as it is QLD/VIC
Yeah it'll be rough in some areas, afaik this is also expected to go right into the night, so may try to get out for storm photos, but yeah not just geography I have to factor in, is now also holiday traffic with people heading home for the weekend lol
the real storms will start tonight
The time just varies per location, NSW coast from Sydney up to newcastle is definitely now lol, a few of them have gone supercell along with giant hail now
4cms at rutherford i think
we caught the edge of the cell
Yeah seen pictures, was a couple of nasty supercells up that way
Basically waiting to see what the storms do at this point, if they move more eastward may try for coastal lightning tonight, will see
Confirmed tornado from Christmas near the gold coast, weather station reported 160km/hr, and it was believed to have exceeded that in some areas. Can see it just to the left of the tree in the middle
whoa
a few months ago my friends farm shed got flattened by a tornado
we had our roof taken off 10 or so years ago too
whoa!
A friend of mine on the gold coast hinterland had her car crush by a tree and some windows broken from branches. No power, no water, no mobile reception there.
very nice @static ruin
Not my photo lol
Basically just other weather nerds online tracking down photos from where radar showed tornado where the more significant damage was, afaik it didn't go down officially as a tornado by BOM (we don't really track them that well in Aus lol)
It happens
We had a big storm just before I left work yesterday, had the camera gear on me knowing there were storms.. beautiful shelf cloud, by the time I could get out, was too late lol
Went to the coast just to watch the lighting as it moved out, most of it was just shrouded by rain at that point though, if I was even half an hour earlier...
Was also a sign there noting how many deaths there are on these rocks, I understand why seeing how people behave.. people walking right against the water on low rock taking selfies, while there's still a big storm out there
Yeah people don't realise how quickly things can change
I used to do rock fishing with my best mate in our late teens to mid 20s
always very wary and watchful and picked our locations carefully
I was out on the coast yesterday and I was a tad amazed and slightly concerned about how close to the edge some of the fishermen got. And there are/were Rogue waves happening. Lord knows I had to quickly evacuate a spot I thought was safe after standing there 10-15 minutes
there are a god awful amount of settings, I might just wait till my course
Morning
gday
How r ya Punther
Alright, you?
Last day of the year I suppose, so can make all the generic bad jokes that go with it
Alright
Got bullied last night because of a camera setting and
People telling me my 18-45mm is good enough for uni next year
happy new year aussielanders
at least those of you in the timezone where its now
Happy new year East Coasters!
happy new years aussies
Are you struggling with how to set the camera up or fireworks photos?

Happy new year
Happy New Year everyone
HNY @errant linden
You too mate!
its wednesday, so you must post fairy wrens for the sake of the alliteration alone
Loris Australia wide say screw Wrensday. it's Lori day! Every.day.is.Lori day.
Any people in melbourne here
Twist
Similar to how you fold a sunshade for a car
Got it sorted @eternal moat
But that’s 2 of the things I need for uni next month
I got a speed light aswell
Yes. At least one
W
?
Ello im in belbourne
Reputation is my least favourite album by far
Look and listening for rustling grass?

Irresistible
Meredith
Her too
Meredith is not a friendly cat
Olivia is a bit better
Benjamin is a good kitty
I just want her to release eras tour on 4k blu ray...for everyone. I mean, us Aussies can't even get Fearless tour on fucking blu ray but America has had that for 10 years
Oh right I almost forgot.
frustrating AF at how her internatinal fans get treated like shit
Definitely nothing 'portfolio' worthy, fun couple of days this weekend trying to get out with the big lens, more potential photo ideas, and as usual, many curse words used as birds fly off the perfect spot
dunno, the red browed finch is lovely, as is the parrot (mulga???)
The parrot is a red rump parrot
Well both the parrots, green one is male, yellow is female
ahh. I've never seen this parrot before
Looks like I'll be heading back to Sydney next week
Ayy
Monday night through Thursday morning. Hopefully the weather won't be trash...
Weather seems to have calmed down a fair bit compared to the last month, should hopefully be fine
Good arvo
it could be
good on my Apple Watch - finished having a big sloppy shit on the dunny and it says "congrats on your new movement goal" about a second after I'd finished and was wiping my ass LOL
best laugh I've had in a long while
the timing was fucking impeccable
I mean apple is congratulating you on a very hard task
lol
the irony is, it wasn't hard LOL. And, I'd been on the dunny for a good 10 minutes by that stage. lactose intolerance and ate cheese on Monday night
no fair, no fair!
Gonna binge watch it
no fair
masterpiece, probably my fave song
Morning Dave
All Too Well is underratewd
Especially the 10 minute version
yes!
sure have, many times
I'm an old fan from 2008
All Too Well was already my fave song back then when RED was released
and probably still is
but 10 min version is even better
and the MV is just amazing
Red was an interesting album.
Red TV is a way better version of it.
Says the All Too Well 10 minute version enjoyer…

The vast majority of the re-records are sonically even worse than the originals
I was out on a bushwalk and this bugger scared the crap out of me when it only had its head poking out of the grass.
I can see why. The stubby legs are hard to see even in this image!
I'm a country boy, taught to leave snakes well alone.
yeah
i itroduced my nieghbours grandkis to a snake yesterday
just one of the 2 diamond pythons in my shed, showed them the firendly oen that i pick up and the non friendly one. taught them how to leave them alone and get grandpa even if it looks friendly
"come into my shed kids ... I wanna show you my snake ... but don't touch it!"
same
that'd be funny if backpain had a "snake" 😛
why are you closer to the unfriendly one?
because i put my phone down to pull a tick off the friendly one
Anyone have any suggestions for hobbies? Running out of ideas
You need to find something you enjoy, people can recommend them, doesn't really mean much if you're not interested though
Aside from photography my other big one is astro, but that's very weather dependant, and certainly not for everyone
He was done wrong by an australian and he never lived it down
it's all paid actors!
How do you think I afford my camera gear
Anyone got any good spots for shooting in the Sydney CBD? Vantage points over the harbour bridge that are (free) public access at night?
Oh right, you're in Aus this week. Not a city person so I've got none, however just fyi, it'll likely be very wet through to Thursday around Sydney
yeah seen the forecast is a bit rubbish...
still gonna make the most of it if I can
The Pyrmont Bridge near the naval museum (not the main harbour though)
Gives you a view of the boats and Barangaroo
The one at darling harbour?
Kind of, our ski fields are always packed during the winter, We only really have a few areas for it. Issue is mostly the cost, cheap accommodation at our snowies can easily run up to $500 a night during winter
Same here in NZ
any darwinians?
Had a very productive shoot down at the botanical gardens
Pending they survive review later i got some absolute bangers
Birding?
Birds, bugs, lizards...
Ah fair. I'll have to actually go check it out someday
It's easy to do since I don't work all that far from Sydney, but I still never go there
It's a great spot to have so close to the CBD
Not surprised by it, was sad when the western storms basically died as they hit the mountains
The good thing about the heavily populated parks is that everything there is used to humans and you can get close
Makes sense
I'd say meetup tomorrow there with the big lenses, but I think it is actually supposed to be heavy rain most of the afternoon, with possible storms thrown in
I fly out at 1:45 so not really gonna have a chance sadly
Ah
Even if the weather isn't poop
Very despite us not having that much snow
People also fly to Japan to ski
Yup
When I visit I usually stay in the area it's convenient for the event I attend haha
Great for walking around and taking snapshots
I suggested it to my mum she says that the season is short and it’d be hard to do since it barely snows in Brisbane
Well yea Brissy is not the place to go skiing
After she said that, I told her people do skiing clubs in which they fly out to the parks and stuff
Still didn’t believe me lol
Lemme put it this way where I live diving is extremely popular but the city is land locked
So people go to the coast every chance they get to dive
Short season just means more of an excuse to do more skiing while you can
Kosciuszko is the place to go, you definitely don't go in Brisbane lol
We have the mountain range that goes down a bit into Victoria, Perisher & Thredbo are the main ski fields
Just mum hasn’t really come up with anything that has sparked my intrest
What do you mean for a hobby?
(Apart from music and photography)
If you want to save money if you ever do it, can also be worth going just out of season during early spring
Correct
September and even October the snow is (usually) good, October can vary based on the Winter season, accomodation prices can be half the peak price
Looking for an outdoor hobby or what's your goal?
Take up a social sport
Ultimate Frisbee is really good
Do you see snow slopes in QLD?
Seeing as you can't do it most of the time... Yeah
Exactly
That's why I suggested frisbee
QLD has lots of clubs
Both social/casual and pro
It's accessable to all fitness and skill levels
I wouldn't recommend skiing as a social sport since it's limited to a short time of year, and it's just one of the most expensive things you could do if it's for social reasons
You can play it in any weather too
Isn’t ultimate frisbee?
Long term skiing makes photography look cheap
Gold Coast usually hosts comps if you wanna play pro-am
Exactly, skiing is expensive af
Hell ADFA has a team
Let me look at video, then I will decide
I looked at a video of the American version of ultimate frisbee, and nah doesn’t look appealing to me
Thanks for trying tho Flight
Are you looking for a sport specifically, or just anything outdoors?
Look at bushwalking groups ect ect
Yeah was about to suggest that, if you like nature stuff, bushwalking groups may be worth checking out
Anything that really gets me out of the house
And helps me get a social life going
Last year just was non stop work and study
We already suggested a bunch of things
You still need that initial motivation, something you enjoy, and just find somewhere that does that. Could be sports or bushwalks as above, idk what interests you, but even things like board games, there's often hobby stores that have game days/nights, but these are just examples I know, you can find a social group for most things if you search
That would be locally accessable
Yet you want skiiing which is both expensive and not accessable
Forgot hobby stores are a good option too
Hobby stores?
Warhammer, board game stores ect
They deal with collectibles, board games, card games etc
They usually have play nights
Oh so like dnd etc.
Yes
I used to play magic the gathering at one, but yeah they have things like DnD, board game nights and such
I tried ultimate it wasn't quite for me as I didn't have time to dedicate to it due to my work.
The times I played pick-up it was heaps of fun even as a novice
I also spent time looking at the clubs on offer on my uni campus
Yeah I stopped playing TCG's because of time (and to a degree money since mtg isn't cheap), but outside of certain games like that, hobby stores have social nights as noted with other things that won't cost
This is what greeted me
Many years ago me and some friends used to go for board game nights, even with people we had never met before it was always fun
It covers way more than just table tennis
Though table tennis has a very dedicated and hard core following
It doesn’t show much flight unless I’m missing a button to click
Like just a description
You're probably gonna have to root around as it doesn't seem very well layed out
Or only accessable to students such as yourself
Also you sure it covers the Brisbane campus
I would be very surprised that your uni does not have a sports club
I clicked on events and activities and I ended up on the same page
Through the link you gave me
Hmmm
Would you like me to hop on my student account and search?
I reckon you should there might be public facing I can't see
Sports is a major component in any uni
That's up to you, we're giving you ideas, you still need to do the legwork yourself and find something more local
Also attend the market day
Usually clubs have registration booths on the day
That's what UC clubs did
ANU too
If ANU can have a niche club like amateur rocketry I'm pretty sure a uni as big as Torrens in Brisbane will have a sports club
You know one of the places State of Origin is played
I’m still seeing the same things as you are Flight
Damn, maybe send an email or contact student hub to get clarification
On it
Your uni seems to have the same structure as mine https://ucx.canberra.edu.au/sport-and-fitness/sport.html
UC Sport is your gateway to all sport at the University of Canberra. Whether you're looking to play socially or compete in national tournaments wearing the UC blue, we have a team for you!
Dig around for local community groups too you'll find fellow uni students in them easily
I sent it to my student onboard person, and mentioned if they didn’t have any knowledge. Could they recommend me a reliable contact
Because tbh it’s just straight up odd that they only seem to offer table tennis
Don’t you think?
Yea I agree it's a bit odd
It looks like they have a massive sports hall along with plenty of green
I mean orientation dates haven’t been announced but still
Yea, it's still summer holidays
Where?
Still at least you're being proactive lul
Just based on the photos of the student hub
Very opposite of my mum
Let me put it this way: I didn't full take advantage of my years in uni so I want others who are going through it to full enjoy theirs.
It's a period that you make strong friendships
So take full advantage of it
thats what im trying to make this year generally
And have some fun while you're at it too
It's not to say one should ignore their studies to go goof off but allow yourself space to enjoy being a [broke] student
yeah
To use an old meme you'll feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when you finish your degree
thats what I want to feel
and not to steam roll it
like I did in my cert3
Also Flight, I do try my best with this sort of stuff
Good to hear, Dell is fine btw xD
Yes, that's usually what the guys shorten my name to lul
What do you mean? There's nothing to offend me with lul
Hey Dell, got an email back today and they said it hasn’t been updated yet to show correct information. And they also mentioned that if I wanted to get more information speak to the on campus support team
@eternal moat
Two extras from my Sydney trip. The rest are in #🗂・specialist-collective
Hmmm very nice birb
Definitely taking the camera in one day and stopping by that area for birds
This evening was just trying backyard birds in the rain, am curious to try an actual birding walk in wet conditions, just not sure how confident I am in the lenses weather sealing yet lol
Or I need to find some kind of cover to mitigate some rain
Leaving Adelaide for Melbourne soon..getting driven mad over what camera gear to take. I'm tempted to just go all out minimalist and take my Leica Q3 Mono.
Take all of it /s
I'll look up the prices on shipping containers. 😩
If you have to agonise over what kit to take, it's because you have too much overlap without a clear purpose. Time to sell some kit.
yeah I have two Pentax 31mm and 21mm prime lenses I have continual debate over which to take even on a day trip.
They are both awesome primes in their own right, but have unique optical characteristics that make each a compelling choice.
ya down south are lucky, thers like 1 film lab in all of the top end
dell?
Delayed flight
nope
Read what?
⬆️
Ahh, at least you've got a proper lead now
even the dropbears are fake!
from the Luna park area.
no, they all died.
C'mon i know im not the only one.......
Am i?
damn sorry mate, don't always pop into this channel and quite often miss out on conversations until it's too late.
this was from Luna park...
ignore my effort, it was my first time shooting cityscapes at night.
darwinian as darwin award idiot, or darwinian as in believing in actual evolutionary science? If the latter, then yes, I am One too.
im talkin bout dwellers in darwin, the top end
ahhh lol. My bad. Nope. I hate the heat, and I hate the humidity. Brisbane is bad a fucking enough.
I'd move to Tasmania if I could (West coast).
I hate the hunidity more than the heat, Im not ok with the heat but adding humidiyt is FAR FAR worse
truly
hey @errant linden
hey mate
How r ya!
Sunday going to be like that here
39 degrees, however the heat is expected to peak late evening, so going to be an uncomfortable night until the southerly moves in around midnight, as per current models anyway
hot in Ipswich for the next week, minimums 23c overnight. My bedroom was 30.7 at midnight last night...I don't have aircon.
Heyo my fellow aussies
ello

How r we ?
1.hawt
2.humid
3. food shortage
4. rail closed
5. stuart hwy also closed
I’m still bothered that I haven’t found any clubs to join yet
Like really bothered
Because I want my life at uni to go to waste
Still haven’t thought anything
Kinda a bummer when the fairy wrens start to lose their breeding colors
I ended up joining the ski club
Straya day
lol
Oh damn, southerly change came through earlier than I thought, didn't hit 40 degrees like expected
Just noticed big temperature drop
if only roger was here
heyo
helo
how r ya?
signed up for a ski club
as usual bored
but school starts in 3 days so i can get my USBC cable back form my friend
Is this true
Lol pretty much
Mostly true, though the only thing that really differs is our current gov has recently changed those stage 3 tax cuts to benefit those lower down more, it's been amusing seeing the media trying to convince people it's a bad thing
Have to be on something like $150k+ for the new plan to be worse for you than the original, yet people are somehow criticising it lol, anyone under is better off
Oh man the Murdoch media is going into a hysteria I gotta say Labor managed to flip a shit sandwich
Stage 3 tax cuts was a trap for Labor so they played a bad hand as best they could
Did you see that article of a couple earning 200k per head crying poor?
Yeah, those poor people, how are they going to afford that second mercedes
I swear people who cry poor can just sell one of their investment properties if they can't make the payments
They were whinging they couldn't buy another property
It's all in the fucking name investment you don't invest what you can't afford to lose
At least with housing you're getting more or most of your investment back
But yeah it just dumbfounds me how people can be financially better off, but still part of the backlash lol
Unlike losing it on the stock market
Greed
And spending beyond their means
All they need to do is not over leverage and they're still in a good spot anyway
It's actually pretty amazing to see people on 6 figures basically live hand-to-mouth
Greed gets the better of them
Even the tennis, albo got boo'd I saw a funny comment which honestly wouldn't surprise me if it has some truth to it, given the ticket prices, a lot of those people who attended are probably those on absurd salaries who now god forbid won't get a tax cut, or as big
I only found out recently they use "dynamic pricing" for the tickets so prices go up with supply and demand, cheapest ticket at one point was $2k for the final match lol
Yup, people are greedy af
Imagine being so entitled
But I guess that's what happens when the government fosters that attitude
I mean I'll be joining the homeowners' club soon but it's gonna be a bit of a struggle for a year or two
Can't have a stable life without a stable home these days
Rentals are just cooked
Yeah that's the dream someday, have thought about just working a less than ideal job that pays fairly well with OT just to get in the market, won't be fun for a while, but probably worth it long term
If you reckon you can deal with the less ideal job for a short period of time I reckon it's worth the temporary pain.
Better to have a solid home than being constantly moving
Moving for rentals ends up being a waste of both your time and money
ello gow was the first day of school. Started off with a rainstorm in the top end
would it be worth getting a new SD card for uni (They have no expectations for photos day one)
maybe?
Trust me it's a good thing they moult, the males often suffer heath issues if they keep their colours.
I spotted a frogmouth today, these birds can be really difficult to spot.
I wish I had a lens longer than my 90mm though.
Can see why they're difficult to spiot, just blend right in with the bark
I know but they're just so nice to photograph
Hey @static ruin should I get a new SD card for my camera for uni next month?
There’s just a lot of stuff on my current SD that I don’t need
You don't format it time to time after photos are backed up?
I don’t have a sd card reader
I basically reformat mine in camera after I dump the photos to the computer
It’s just with uni starting and all that
Well the point still remains, you also don't need an SD card reader, you can just connect camera via USB to computer (with SD card in camera) and copy the photos off it, SD cards aren't typically used for long term storage
And with well camera files taking a huge amount of space on your computer
The files are going to take up space whether that be on the SD card, or computer, buy another drive whether that be internal or external
I have a hard drive
I mean it’s really all up to me? Right?
Your not the one going to uni
@static ruin
Well yes, of course it's up to you lol
Yeah might get another SD card, start fresh
One can never have enough memory cards
Which is why one should start an sd card mountain
one should never store permanent data in SD cards unless they actively want to lose it
I always have a spare, some cameras need a blank card for Firmware updates.
I've just formatted my card when installing firmware updates, but again I typically just dump the photos on the computer and reformat next time I take the camera out to start fresh
SD cards are pretty durable. I have only had one or two act up on me. Though I have had one person in my family make a pretty dreadful mistake with a store brand SD card.
It’s just I have uni starting
orientation is on the 15th of feb @eternal moat
I am getting a dog
one of my uni classes got moved to another day, swapped to online and it runs from 6:31pm-9:30pm
whats funny @feral cargo
oh it's just really late
that's why I was laughing cause its a major oof
Woot uni lifestyle here you come!
It’s gonna suck in autumn and winter as it’ll dark af when you start and finish
I didn't mean to upset you @serene ibex
All good
Your tired and that’s fine
I asked why this is the case to the enrollment team
And I have yet to hear back
no, I just meant the class was late. I sent that reaction as like a "oh no laugh through the pain" type thing. sorry for the misunderstanding
All good
👍
Wtf they can’t teach a lighting class online…
Online diagram isn’t the same as physically showing the students how light interacts with talent and the scene
My same thoughts
Like WTF, how the hell you going to teach a lighting class online
Least I go to uni once a week
The image is proof that they can somehow do so
It's not a question of whether or not they can do it, you can in theory make just about any class online.
The issue is you as a student aren't going to learn as much not seeing it in practice, it's going to effect how much you're getting out of it
University doesn't care, they still get the same $$
It’s not as illustrative as seeing it irl and seeing how it changes
Also it says “under careful Deliberation, your academic team have decided to cancel the face 2 face learning for trimester 1 but have enrolled you in the same class but online”
Can we all agree that this is a bit fucked
?
a lot of classes go online if there are common schedule clashes or minimal offline enrolment
its pretty normal
you might be disappointed but thats how life and uni works
Guess my Wednesday is free now
To do whatever the hell I want to do
Yeah?
Guess I find something to do that day
No @foggy steppe ?
that is how uni timetables tend to work yeah
lots of free time to study or work on assignments or join clubs or talk to friends or rest
I have joined a ski club soo yeah
Tbh I wouldn’t know what to do on Wednesday that isn’t study or assignments
"free time"
Aka a dozen required readings, juggling a job, and desperately trying to get your group assignment members to do their job
I’m very organised soo
Chances are you'll still get pretty desperate by the end of it
How good you are at studying changes how desperate you will be
I’m very hard working too
It's easy to get overwhelmed is what I'm saying
I'm hard working too
Most people I know in uni are
But the courses can easily flood you with stuff
Get sick one week?
Well, you now have to double your required readings, email convenors for missed tutorial notes, and catch up on your own time
It is, you have my sympathy I’ve had 8-9pm lectures and tutorials in the past it’s cooked
But sometimes that’s your only choice as it’s the only available slot that a tutor and/or lecturer is available for
I’m trying to have a life too
The classic timetable clash where your classes partially overlap and you have to get the vibe of when to leave each class to sprint to the other
Or just skip one entirely
Oh god Ive had those before
And then you learn part of the lecture you left wasn't recorded and have to scrounge for notes
Even worse when the lecturer decided to end the lecture on "upcoming assignment tips and information"
True story :P
So can I really have a life then?
Yeah, make study groups
Don't try to go all in on the movie lifestyle tho
Have friends, hang out with them, do things
I mean can I not do extra curricula?
Just don't schedule hang outs during the major assignment times which is usually end of semester
Yeah, I find I can do 1 or 2
More than 2 is really chaotic
I do a ski club with has an associate program
Especially when you get slapped by 4 3000 word essays due within a week of each other
They will be back from Japan on the 9th of Feb
The advice I usually give is join as many as you're interested in, go to club activities for the first couple weeks
Weed out all the ones you don't like
Whittle it down to 3 max
At least ski club is one, right?
Yeah that's cool
There's lots of groups that do stuff which aren't a actual society too
Just finding the right people can help you find fun groups
Like my uni has a unofficial photography messenger chat
Are they like PL, just buy gear, but not use it?
50/50 :P
Like every week just have a gas meetup at the local camera store
They have a form on their website in which you can hire gear
The ski club I mean
So I could theoretically fit one more club
my advice for uni is to try do a minimum of 40 hours of study a week
including homework
👍
even if its a chill week do the full 40 hours
also join like
at least 3 or 4 clubs
its usually $5-10 for a year so even if you dont go its whatever
but it gives the options to go for a lot more events and meetups
and its way easier to keep in contact with friends in clubs than classes usually
Yeah, join clubs, actively participate lots in 1 or 2, passively participate in the rest basically by showing up to a few meetups every now and then
clubs like ski usually have like barely any events
more like 2 big events a year or so
I joined a stupid amount of clubs way back
Whittled it down to 2 that I did lots in
And a few others I kinda just kept in check with
i went through a period of "1 assignment due per day for 2 weeks" lol
and averaged 2 assignments per week for the whole of uni
that was rough
These times suck so bad
yeah i joined like 5-10 clubs and did a lot in 2 too
I mean it’s fine
I can work with that
When you read the course summary and it sounded okay till the assignments all decided to hit at the same time and they're harder than you expected
harder than you expected is key
sitting there til morning stuck on a question sucks
essays are usually not bad tho, they take a while but its not really possible to get stuck
⬆️
Referencing is a bitch for essays tho
Especially IR or securities
Digging up the most obscure sources for every sentence you say
I said I can work with only have 1or 2 big events at the ski club
in sciences referencing id say isnt as bad
probs the opposite, essays worse in non-stem but question stuff is better
Yeah, way less problem solving, way worse tedious essay writing
I think I hate Arts courses that are essay heavy the most tbh
Y’all listening to me?
It's hard to find sources since they're not as well archived as academic journals
yeah i can imagine non-academic sources would be fucked lol
my least favourite were the problem solving assignments every week courses
Those suck
Those suck hard
UQ had a lot for some reason
Guess I have to find something to do Wednesday then
doing a thesis in arts would be hard as hell tho
Atleast art essays don't rely as heavily on backing up literally every sentence which claims anything
you could also leave it open as a day to see friends or study or chill
or work
Also just a day off
most people dont have 5 days of uni a week
thats a big bonus lmao
when you write an offhanded thing and then you need to prove it
A flex day that you can do anything with is a godsend in uni
Most of my friends I have to organise it
a lot of people care less about that after high school
The UN peacekeeping operations are for keeping the peace (United Nations, 2021)
And I also don’t have many friends outside of high school
It's way easier to make friends in uni as long as you put yourself out there
thats literally what my intros sound like
youll make new ones in uni
some people find it easier, some harder
but youll make friends either way as long as you try
If your uni offers citation and academic and study practices workshops go to them
Highly recommend
I think they do, will check sometime
The key is trying
i found it really hard personally
Holy fuck Ive had that happen and the lecturer was like “I don’t do notes because you should be attending lectures”
but i managed to leave uni with 2 solid new friends even then
I’ve found hard even with TAFE
yeah sometimes lecturers are just anti-recording
Thiiiiis so fucking much @serene ibex it may seem like you have weeks before a major piece of assessment is due but it creeps up on you really fast
i found it difficult because my classes were weird, and you would almost never have a class with the same person twice
what i found to be better was to stick with a club that has regular members every week
and that youre genuinely interested in
I’m good with my assignments and stuff
Uni gives so much freedom that it’s enough to hang yourself with
I know
I've never met a uni student who wasn't getting fucked by assignments. Being studious only changes how much you get fucked not whether you will be fucked or not
I.e you fucked around and found out
It’s rare you have the super organised people
i know the 2nd and 5th place in NSW high school maths who got fucked by maths assignments in uni
My ex was one of those super organised students
ive never met a student in my degree who wasnt fucked by assignments
its just how it is
@fleet edge I know someone who did 5 units at ANU, had a job and did part time modeling (insane time management)
The people who can somehow not panic submit at 11pm whilst working multiple days a week and also still have a social life are monsters
Look, can we at least stop panicking, let’s just see how this all plays out yeah
even without working not panic submitting is rough
We're more like, trauma bonding over uni haha
I have point tho, don’t I?
the rest of us are used to it so its less panic and more complaining
im starting a new degree in april!
3 more compulsory classes
You get to put off the nightmare that is grad program applications for a few more years yet, lucky haha
I remember my final assignment for my last unit. I got an extension because the software platform we were using shit itself.
Smashed out a 30-40% assignment in 3 days and got an HD.
yeah the phd stuff is such bullshit ill put it off to even decide if ill go through with it lol
Last minute D's and HD's feel so good but you just know it's reinforcing bad habits haha
thats actually impressive
i ended up rushing my final thesis
Well guys at least wish me luck, I’m sure I will be fine
Yeah, good luck :3
I will let you guys know how orientation goes once it comes around
We're just bitter late stage uni students haha
The majority of third years+ are similar
First year is fun
Or can be fun
My course goes for only 18 months
Good time to head out and experience life as a young adult
Oooh short one
That’s why I’m trying to make it count
Because of the pandemic and me working shitty jobs, discovering I'm queer (and having a existential meltdown), being depressed, nobody teaching me how to cook and clean, and my family having financial problems at one point, I've been in uni for 8 years now
I’ll find something to do on Wednesday now
There's always the magic of post grad ✨
taking as long as you want for a degree isnt bad
its just how life goes
i ended up with 5 years for undergrad but if things go to plan which they never do itll be 10+ years total
Part time study is Hella valid
So much more relaxed
Hard to get swamped by two courses
Hope the Torrens Uni activity website has updated
Oh yeah, universities grade very differently from HS
Yeah I know
Doesn’t it go C, D, HD?
Sometimes, depending on the class, a P is a good mark :P
But yeah, if you're getting straight credits, you're doing good at uni
D's and HD's are usually deliberately hard to get
im just full time 10 years
P C D HD or just WAM
aus has 2 systems
I might look again at the Torrens activity website since it’s coming close to orientation day
Torresns uses the D, HD, scale from memoty
Still tho
I’ll look at this again
Ooof
I think reading the marking rubric and having done the assignment once before helped. 3 components: technical documentation of our theoretical solution, building a rough prototype (does not have to be functional) and a video presentation of how one would progress through the system
@foggy steppe
I don’t think I slept very much in those days 😬
Are you doing phd/post grad?
its insane that you passed let alone hd lmao
did 2 bachelors, honors (which i failed), now masters then phd
Depending after masters might just work instead
X2D isn't gonna buy itself :P
Honestly true
Ngl that's impressive
If I get a decent enough salary I'll genuinely just buy x2d
What industry sector are you aiming for?
Not fully decided but either academia, health or sell out to a hedge fund lmao
Could always just push for the hedge fund for a few years, set yourself up better than just go with whatever you prefer
I imagine it's both boring and stressful so burnout would be fast anyway for hedgefund
Imo sellout for a few years to set your life up and do whatever you want
Yeah that's what I'm thinking
Like pre PhD
Get a bit of money
My friends are doing that, it's super stressful but for a year or two it's doable
the torrens activities website hasnt updated
this video has been out for some time now...our government and major parties are cunts.
apparently the median income according to the ABS is $2300 gross per week. Well fuck me, but no cunt I know earns that much.
No way they said that
you mean like this :p
why do you think you need 1?
I already have a sister
Stevie Wonder could have spotted those.
$2300/week puts you close to the top 10% of earners in Australia
well, that's shit, cos the best way to learn about light and lighting in a studio is to fucking play with the light...
It's achieveable in one's life time with the right job
Hell you can easily make that in trades
spot on 100000% fucking percent
The trade off is you fuck up your body
how so? that's not a bad time imho
Depends on the trade, but yeah I know a couple who moved out early because of that
nah...uni is a money making exercise now. They don't give a fuck about actually teaching students shit. I saw enough of that fuck up shit back in 2017 when I partially completed a TPP at USQ
One just became a truckie instead, pulls in upwards of $150k/yr, granted with a crapload of OT, but no real physical toll relatively speaking
It just sucks in Winter/Autumn when it's dark and cold. If you're a woman sometimes those uni parking lots are sketchy my old uni started offering security escort for students studying late.
ah my memory is shit. At least I got the 300 part right
Trucking's hidden physical toll is weight
lol also true
It's objectively worse than office job
just proof that they do sometimes decide to show themselves to the world
But to be fair, it's no different than a lot of office workers if you just sit in a chair all day
As you rarely get to walk around
people trash talking unis gets so old
that's what the uni should be doing. proper security. But that costs money...eats into profits 😉
most of the top unis have 24 hour security you can call for escort/drive to bus areas etc
I mean they had security cameras there but there was a spate of weirdos harassing students late at night so they started to offer that for night class/study.
Playing devils advocate, is it actually an issue statistically, or is it just perception
I can only base things on my personal experiences. They're shit. I'm also fucking old enough to remember what unit was like before you were even born.
I agree, for young people uni offers a ready networking opportunity for them while they build skills for real life.
This is honestly the first time I've heard of people even commenting on things like a uni car park being an issue at night
If anything it's the network you build in uni that is really important rather than just your qualifications alone.
I'll go with a real issue. There's a lot of weirdos out there. I'm a beefy guy and they give me the creeps. What the fuck are they gonna do to a hot petite woman in her 20s in the dark late at night?
personal experience is such a poor way to give general statements on gigantic things that affect many people
and yeah the networking is just as important as the education and the experience
It could be a freak incident but it's the perception of "oh the chances are low so why would we care about you"
it's all I can go on. Back in my day, ONLY the fucking top 1% went to university. The rest got a trade or job
its a recognised issue at least at unsw/usyd/uq/qut and there are talks on safety, and a lot of measures are taken to provide security to people who feel concerned
now every cunt wants to go to uni
you need a fucking degree to fucking clean dunnies
FFS
That's a cultural issue more than a university issue
And you know what - having more people going to uni actually did increase productivity
this degree BS has gone OTT because governments wanna make money from stupid plebs
University is great, it's the people that go because they're told they have to if they want to be successful rather than going with a goal that's the issue
beg to differ
also increasing rates of jobs are moving towards office rather than field
I've known more than my fair share of people who went to uni who couldn't wipe their fucking asses
this i 100% agree with
It's a numbers game too with uni sure you get washouts that amount to nothing but then you get the students who end up doing innovative things.
if you go coz you think you have to its shit
stats are like politicians. Full of lies
I agree, you have to want it
I only figured that out when I was in my 30s with uni as I had the drive to finish up my degree.
stats can be manipulated in any way you want to show what you want...it's a veil of distruth.
to put it as simply as possible
The irony here is you're typing things out on a machine that was conceptualised by someone who went to uni
is it so hard to respect the paths that other people want to take through life
anyway, I'm outta here.
whether that be uni or trades
Yes, we need trades but the world has more than just trades
I think it's a good thing people want to study something in higher education
and those uni kids leaned on the shoulders of the greats that invented computers in the 50s/60s
so bleh
I finished my degree even if I decided not to use it
So that knowledge is then used & expanded on, technology progresses
However it gives me choice
yeah but back then, uni was REAL. You had to be super smart to go to uni, not some idiot with half a brain who spends 50k on HECS to get a piece of paper like it is today
there's a reason why global IQs have went down in the past 50 years
dont just look down on people for taking a path you didnt
what a load of horse shit
Exactly, I fucking am in aw of say mechanics and trades who do genuinely good work
Basically why I think we have some of the issues we have today, and definitely not going to be solved by applying it in reverse. Just need to recognize basically any path has its merits, depends on what one wants to do in life
does that explain why the average kid today can't fucking spell without a spell checkers, has fuck load shit grammar, and can't count without a calculator...righto...
Seriously a really good cabinet maker putting together a kitchen it looks fucking amazing
anyway, I've made my point
my brother is an excellent mechanic and i was a top student who went to uni, neither of us is gonna look at each other and call each others careers shit
gonna fuck off now, got better things to do
thats nonsensical
Millennial parents need to do better.

Thanks for watching!
This is why
Kids are being fed on screen time and it's the parents fault they don't fucking control it
I actually like that NSW has put in a blanket ban for students using phones at schools now
i kinda am against that particular one for high schools
im glad it exists for primary
I remember in school before smart phones they had phone ban
but phones actually supplemented my study heavily in high school
used them for googling stuff and note taking etc
Difference is you actually use it to Google questions you don't understand
Suppose part of it could just be different era I grew up in, I finished before they were sufficient for that
for primary schools phones make zero sense and are pretty problematic
Still had a Nokia phone when I left school, internet on the phone wasn't even a consideration for me lol
It's literally the gameboy problem
our teachers would also regularly check to see that i was actually using it properly
they loved sneaking around the room to look over peoples shoulders
(Yes, I bought my gameboy to school to play during recess)
i brought my DS in early primary school too lol
yeah there was a long while where phones could be nothing but a distraction i think
Those were the salad days I and a friend played through Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
On our GBA and SP
Ah, good times, gameboys before backlights were a thing on the screen
my era was pokemon 3rd and 4th gens and those were so much fun
Trying to awkwardly tilt the screen so you can actually see it
The SP was a revolution with backlighting
I was first and second gen pokemon
I went through 1st and 2nd
Gen 2 was my favourite by far, basically anything beyond I played on emulator
Did enjoy gen 3 though
4th was the first one i played when i started gaming in general so its got a top spot for me
Got pokemon black I think on the DS, whatever gen that was, never got far, boomer me complained it felt too modern
Wait no I lied I only had a cursory experience of 3rd
My main experiences were with 1st and 2nd that was in my formative years
I was sad when the battery died in my pokemon silver cartridge
You aren't wrong I feel they put too much stuff
Could replace it, but eh, easier to just play on emulator now if I ever revisit
the gba batteries that led to all the saves getting wiped
Same my Pokemon Crystal version's battery died so it's long gone
Interesting enough GBA cart kept power so I have been able to save my Golden Sun saves
My Yellow version is gone
😦
Battery died too
Still got the carts though I'll replace the batteries at some point
Just easier to play on emulator rather than bother with battery at this point
it does always feel nice to play on original device
emulating 3ds always feels weird on a ps5 controller
It does, but the lack of backlight is still pain
ah yeah that cant be fixed lol
Short of modding your Gameboy Color
seen some crazy gameboy mods so not surprising

Ah, remember that mario game
Fresh start for uni
Agreed @eternal moat ?
Like I say you can never have enough memory cards, they're cheap pick one up for your new school year.
(Dave is wondering why I need another SD card)
If anything being able to rotate a pair (or more) cards is always good
I just know I have a lot of photos on my current sd card
And I know it will melt my computer
Well you shouldn't be storing images on your cards anyways
Make sure you put some money into storage solution like hard drives and backups ect
Just let me figure it out
I keep images on rotated cards as a temporary backup in case I accidentally nuke some work on the computer.
Then I use the old rotated card I format it
I will pick up another SD while shopping for uni
i format sd cards at the start of every shoot
If your computer is struggling with storage for work get a 2tb external ssd for projects and a larger mechanical drive for long term archive.
since i often go through multiple cards in each shoot
It's so weird to see that photos is really "efficient" compared to shooting video
