Most of the ones I've seen are portfolio building ones

#

Gimme a sec

errant linden
#

see, that might be easy for you, but for me, that'd be hard I think

coral crescent
#

So they give you a theme and a technique to capture in images

#

It's almost like a contest, and you have to make a portfolio of it

#

So one of the ones I have on file was "Passing of time" as the theme and "Long exposure" as the technique

#

Essentially you have to take a series of pictures using them and then provide an artist statement for each one

#

Images can be fucking shit and you'll still pass

errant linden
#

ahhh

#

I'd probably fail at that

#

I'm good technically, but poor creatively

static ruin
coral crescent
#

yep

coral crescent
errant linden
coral crescent
#

Creatively you can do fuck all, just need to have the technique and a general theme

errant linden
#

I have an uber technical mind, but very poor creatively

coral crescent
#

It's cause of courses like this anyway I look down on photography in university here

errant linden
#

for me, I'd tackle that question with a few options - multiple exposures of a clock combined into a single image (with blurring of each individual images time hands); long exposure with motion blur of water at say a pier using a ND filter...

static ruin
coral crescent
errant linden
#

wow, really?

coral crescent
#

yep

errant linden
#

another shot would be car trails at night in the city

coral crescent
#

They did that in the folio

#

But in the day

#

With selective color

#

And the rest in mono

#

In short every mistake a beginner would make

#

My opinion on uni photography courses is that they teach fuck all

errant linden
#

after those 3 ideas of mine, I'm out of ideas

#

and I'm gonna guess 3 images isn't enough for a portfolio

serene ibex
#

The specifications if y’all were wondering

#

@errant linden @coral crescent

coral crescent
#

Yeah looks like pretty basic stuff

#

To buy everything there excluding the laptop is probably like under 1200 AUD

errant linden
#

why do you need a computer that supports Adobe Premiere Pro?

coral crescent
#

Eh maybe, I reckon I could pass the entire course in a week

errant linden
#

WTF has that got to do with photography?

coral crescent
#

Yeah that is a bit weird

errant linden
#

I guess a lot of pros now do a lot of video stuff for their sites

#

create tutorials etc

coral crescent
#

Yeah but the course is photography

#

Not media or visual

#

If it was media or visual then I'd understand

errant linden
#

I know I know, but video is probably a bigger part of the working pros life now than stills

coral crescent
#

Yeah but the course is literally called photography KEKL, should be called Freelancing or something if it was teaching how to be a pro

#

Freelancing is much harder to learn and I think it'd be an actual decent course

#

Would cover business aspects as well

errant linden
#

diploma in photography typically eases you into being a working pro from my research last year

#

a far better option than an arts degree imho

coral crescent
#

Company will 100% prefer a person with actual experience in field shooting and working rather than someone fresh out of uni

#

I'd bet anything the freelancer is in a completely different league both creatively and technically as well lmao

errant linden
#

not everyone can jump into freelance though, some, like me, would just get lost, frustrated and say fuck it

#

I mean, I like routine and structure

coral crescent
#

Yeah sure uni exists for the risk free stuff but you're gonna be one of 100 people that have gone through that same course

#

My point is, if you wanna learn photography, don't go to uni for it. Go to uni for some other course and freelance photography on the side

#

That's my plan for uni anyway, though by the time I graduate I think I should be able to land a media related side job

errant linden
#

I guess. My issue is that my areas of photography that interest me aren't people friendly (nature, landscape, wildlife, birding, macro)

static ruin
#

So this was up in QLD yesterday apparently, the insane storms continue on the east coast

#

Apparently an area also got hit by ~15cm hail... Yes, 15cm

errant linden
#

oh wow

#

is it me, or are we more frequently getting twisters in Australia than we ever used to?

static ruin
#

Not really, Australia gets more tornado's than many believe, it's just they're typically out rural and often unreported

errant linden
#

ahh

static ruin
#

Not to say we get a lot, though globally speaking if you ignore the US, we're up there in the amount we get

#

US ofc still makes up like 95% of it

errant linden
#

geesus. Been OK with coughing all day after 2 days straight dry racking cough...suddenly starting to cough FFS

static ruin
#

Looking at taking Friday off work for possible supercell storms down here, tornado is unlikely, but had a nice rotating cloud over the weekend, fun to watch

errant linden
#

I have a friend in the US who's into storm chasing

static ruin
#

Yeah I want to travel to the US for it someday, just $$$$

errant linden
#

she's doing a degree in metereology too

#

mate I wanna travel to Iceland for landscape photography, although I'd probably butcher any images lol

static ruin
#

This dropped 5cm hail over the weekend, I decided not to intercept to not damage car, was great to watch

errant linden
#

holy moly 5cm hail?

static ruin
#

Yep

errant linden
#

brb

#

my feet are fucking swollen and painful. Usually only an issue in Summer after a long day of wearing shoes and socks. Been at home all day, shoeless and sockless. Wonder if it's a Covid thing. yes, I am a Diabetic (II)

#

I don't trust my memory, but I think I had swollen feet with my last infection too, along with some chilblains...nasty virus

foggy steppe
#

I was in the area

#

It was storming so hard my visibility was 50m due to just rain

errant linden
foggy steppe
#

I parked and went outside to watch the rain

static ruin
#

Winds capable of pushing a car over

#

Fridays forecast showing decent chance of supercells south Sydney, so hoping to get something again

errant linden
eternal moat
#

Easier to just find work than trying to jump the damn Centrelink hoops

fleet edge
#

And difficulty of photography uni courses depend highly on the university

#

And what level of courses

fleet edge
#

Turns out that I can't get it because I've gone over the time Centrelink allows to finish a degree

#

Even tho I only claimed Centrelink for the first year of it

errant linden
fleet edge
errant linden
fleet edge
#

Centrelink allowable time is listed full time degree length + 1 year

errant linden
#

well that means a wasted HECs (or whatever they call it now) debt

fleet edge
#

So 4 years where you can claim youth allowance/ausstudy

errant linden
#

absolute stupidity, but hey, that's CentreClusterFuck for you

fleet edge
#

Even if you do 2 years + 1 year break + 2 years you won't be eligible for Centrelink in that last year

#

Even if you don't claim Centrelink that one middle year

#

I did part time study but now want to polish off my degree full time for 1 more year

#

Only to learn it's not allowed lol

errant linden
#

😦

fleet edge
#

Even tho I've only claimed 1 year of Centrelink at the very start of my degree

fleet edge
errant linden
#

I remember John Howard bringing in Youth Allowance many years ago...

#

it was a fuckup back then

#

just designed simply to cut unemployment numbers and save the government money since most 18-25 year olds weren't eligible due to parental income

#

absolutely fucking criminal

#

parents shouldn't be financially responsible for their kids until they fucking turn 25

#

PS I worked for Centrelink back in those days ('94 to '99)

#

I directly saw the LNP's modus operandi of "let's fuck welfare clients over" attitude

#

worst prime minister EVER by far. Daylight 2nd

errant linden
#

As expected

eternal moat
errant linden
#

I would use stronger words than that

eternal moat
errant linden
#

that much is very obvious

#

Two Crocodiles were sitting in the Australian parliament house parking lot. The smaller one turned to the bigger one and said, 'I can't understand how you can be so much bigger than me. We're the same age, we were the same size as kids - I just don't get it.' 'Well,' said the big Croc, 'what have you been eating?' 'Politicians, same as you,' replied the small Croc. 'Hmm. Well, where do you catch them?' 'I hide under their cars and when they get near, I run at them and catch them'. 'Same here. Hmm.....How do you catch them?' asked the big Croc.'Well, I crawl up under one of their big Lexus, BMW or Mercedes cars and wait for one to unlock the car door. Then I jump out, grab them by the leg, shake the shit out of them and eat 'em!' 'Ah!' says the big Crocodile, 'I think I see your problem. You're not getting any real nourishment. See, by the time you finish shaking the shit out of a Politician, there's nothing much left but an arsehole with a briefcase

#

sent a version of that to fuckwit Kevin Rudd many years go. Never got a response

#

probably on an AFP watch list lol

#

fuck 'em

sharp steppe
serene ibex
#

But I could do it with my current camera @coral crescent

#

The course I mean

coral crescent
#

Yes

#

Just make sure you have all the lenses you need

serene ibex
#

Thank god, I prob just need a new SD and the lenses

foggy steppe
#

Do you think r10 is a bad camera or something lol

coral crescent
#

That's what I've been wondering lmao

serene ibex
#

I was just asking

coral crescent
#

R10 isnt just overkill but it's beating the dead horse for this course

#

It'll work no question

foggy steppe
#

Like actually you need a phase one iq4 for this course

coral crescent
#

That's only if you couldn't get the m10

serene ibex
#

My mum literally was telling me I should get a new camera because ā€œthe cameras look serious in the subject promotionsā€

#

I’m not shitting you

coral crescent
#

What the fuck

serene ibex
#

Exactly

coral crescent
#

Subject promotions my ass I could pass the course with a 600D

foggy steppe
#

I have serious looking cameras from decades ago

#

That take semi passable photos

#

At best

coral crescent
#

Seagull QuagDistress

foggy steppe
#

Seagull doesn't look very serious lmao

foggy steppe
#

They're usually designed for that lol

serene ibex
#

But yeah, I will look into the lenses

#

The course needs

#

Ye?

foggy steppe
#

The course probs doesn't need lenses

serene ibex
#

It does @foggy steppe

coral crescent
foggy steppe
#

What does it say?

coral crescent
#

There were specifications in a ss here before

serene ibex
#

@foggy steppe

coral crescent
#

But for the actual assignments I reckon you could get away with a phone cam lmao

#

I have a few on file

foggy steppe
#

So you must have a cam with a kit lens

#

It explicitly says that

#

Lol

serene ibex
#

ā€œLenses with the following focal lengthsā€

foggy steppe
#

It specifically says

#

A cropped sensor cam with an 18-55 lens satisfies the requirements

#

And yeah it does

#

That reaches all the focal lengths it asks for

#

Lol

serene ibex
#

My lens is 18-45mm

foggy steppe
#

72mm and 80mm ffeq is literally not a difference

coral crescent
#

Requirements don't mean anything you won't end up needing those focal lengths anyway

foggy steppe
#

You can also just crop

#

Also idk which fucking uni this is but my uni has free borrowing of cameras for students lol

#

And most unis do afaik

coral crescent
#

Iona have you seen any of the assignments before

serene ibex
#

Is the course specifications just optional content?

foggy steppe
#

No

#

Is it worth it

coral crescent
#

Nope

#

Images are equiv to newbies in #šŸ’”ćƒ»open-feedback

serene ibex
#

Just get a cropped lens

#

Ie 18-55mm

foggy steppe
foggy steppe
brittle raven
#

the kit lens is nubbad

serene ibex
#

You reading it right?

coral crescent
foggy steppe
#

Lmao alright

serene ibex
#

Or satisfy the ā€œminimum requirementsā€

foggy steppe
#

It's fine

serene ibex
#

And your telling me to keep the 18-45mm

foggy steppe
#

If you're poor yes

serene ibex
#

I’m not

foggy steppe
#

Then go buy a few L lenses

serene ibex
#

ie 18-55mm

coral crescent
fleet edge
#

If you want a excuse to buy more gear then go do it lol

#

Just don't bankrupt yourself

#

And put effort into actually getting good

serene ibex
#

I’m a responsible adult

#

Who can spend money wisely

foggy steppe
#

The 18-45 is good enough

#

Get more if you want

serene ibex
#

I will spend my money wisely

#

Also where would I go to get these?

#

Something Like Ted’s you reckon or?

#

@foggy steppe

foggy steppe
#

eBay

fleet edge
#

Oooh

serene ibex
#

The course starts in February

fleet edge
#

The class teaches lighting

serene ibex
#

2024

fleet edge
#

Even if it's only the basics thank god

foggy steppe
serene ibex
#

I feel as though I’m getting the reflectors

foggy steppe
#

Oh it's Torrens uni

serene ibex
#

Yeah

foggy steppe
#

Rare choice

serene ibex
#

I’m going there

#

Rare?

#

How is it rare?

foggy steppe
#

Just don't meet many people going there

serene ibex
#

Alternatively could I show this to a camera shop?

fleet edge
#

Depends on the shop

serene ibex
#

Ted’s

fleet edge
#

Luck out and you get some helpful and knowledgeable people

#

Get unlucky and you'll have someone who knows basically nothing recommending speedlights when they know fuck all about ocf themselves

serene ibex
#

Yeah

#

So what’s the go in obtaining these things

fleet edge
#

Judging by the fact they don't specify a flash trigger

brittle raven
#

I simply exist to consume product

fleet edge
#

I'm going to assume you'll be simply twisting the speedlight to bounce off either the environment or the reflector

serene ibex
#

It says a 3 in 1

fleet edge
#

Yeah, the reflector

#

Just type it into ebay

#

As for the speedlight, depends on how much money you have haha

serene ibex
#

Why EBay

fleet edge
#

Because it's cheap

#

And it's a piece of fabric

#

And it literally doesn't matter if it's a fancy brand or not

serene ibex
#

Yeah cheap alright

#

You also do realise this is a 1yr course

foggy steppe
#

Buying everything on eBay is best

#

Cheapest

fleet edge
#

Hence cheap

serene ibex
#

Actually it’s a 5 in 1

fleet edge
#

Doesn't matter

#

Type it into ebay

serene ibex
#

No, it’s a 5 in 1

#

I can read

fleet edge
#

???

serene ibex
#

It says 5 in 1 reflector 105cm approx

fleet edge
#

And?

#

Type it into ebay

#

You've typed it like 5 times in here now

#

Do that

#

But in the eBay search box

serene ibex
fleet edge
#

Yup, there ya go

#

Just make sure it says the size somehere

foggy steppe
#

What is a black reflector

#

Isn't that the opposite of a reflector

fleet edge
foggy steppe
#

Ah right

#

Just named odd

fleet edge
#

Yeah

serene ibex
#

It’s 60x60

#

In diameter

#

#

I’ll definitely look for shit when I’m shopping @errant linden

errant linden
#

We’re just teasing ya mate

#

Enjoy your course you’ll be fine

errant linden
#

Wtf teds are selling the R7 for $2799

#

That’s $200 more than the original RRP

#

Fuck retailers are getting greedy

#

I mean from 2500 to 2800 is a $300 increase…300/2500 is 12% increase. How is justified when CPI is like 7.8 fucking percent?

#

And that’s all fabricated by the RBA falsely increasing interest rates without any justification

static ruin
#

2 things, first is just shop around, I've honstly found teds to always be over priced. Second with the CPI, "7.8%" doesn't mean everything across the economy goes up by 7.8%, it effects every business differently, some see little to none, others see more, and things like cameras aren't even a factor

eternal moat
serene ibex

It’s apart of the course requirements

@coral crescent

coral crescent

Huh, I got no clue with the r10. You sure it's not a touch and hold thing?

serene ibex

Touch screen= green box that focuses image where finger was pressed (Does not take a photo like touch shutter)

I have that when I do video

Also turn it off lmao

It's called continuous servo AF iirc

serene ibex

Just probably the lenses then

#

Like just get an 18-55mm

#

Or get 3 lenses

static ruin
#

What do you have currently?

serene ibex
#

18-45mm

#

ie the one that came with the R10

static ruin
#

Difference between 18-45 and 18-55 doesn't matter, wouldn't buy an 18-55

#

50 f1.8 is 'cheap' and gives you the option of larger aperture for bokeh, could be a decent lens to combo it with

serene ibex
#

So what about the others

#

ie wide angle and telephoto

#

@static ruin

static ruin
#

It specifies on the right 18-55 on apsc would satisfy the minimum requirements, whether you buy anything beyond that from the sounds is more down to how you shoot

serene ibex
#

So get the 18-55mm

#

?

static ruin
#

Your 18-45 is close enough

#

If you want telephoto, would get either the rf-s 55-210 or adapt the rf-s 55-250

serene ibex
#

Sooo, what am I really getting

#

?

#

Or do I not buy anything

@static ruin (sorry for the ping)

# serene ibex Or do I not buy anything

I wouldn't buy anything unless you want/need it. Speaking specifically for the course, there isn't any major difference between 45 and 55mm, the RF-S 18-45 is optically better than the old 18-55's, so you can just crop and honestly never know the difference anyway

#

I'd potentially consider a 50mm f1.8 prime just because it opens up other creative options being f1.8, beyond that it just depends on what you decide to shoot

#

If you find you don't have enough range, then buy a RF-S 55-210 or adapt an EF-S 55-250, same applies on the wider end, if you find you need wider, buy then, otherwise I'd just hold off

serene ibex
#

Besides, it isn’t till February

Just keep saving in the mean time, buy a lens to fill a need or want, which you'll find out when the time comes if you need to

Little rant, but can I just say, our councils here can go F themselves, sounds like my photography is going to get a heck of a lot more expensive, or I'll just have to outright cut back with some of the costs, apparently up our mountains here, paid parking is dramatically expanding, with a heck of a lot of areas exceeding $10/hr just to go on a f'ing hike

#

Apparently being physically active requires you to spend a fortune even in nature, parking is actually very quickly becoming more expensive than City parking

eternal moat
#

I can understand using parking fees as a way to reduce demand

static ruin
#

And even if that were the case, over $10/hr, fuck the poor people who want to go out right, you must be well off to enjoy the trails now

eternal moat
static ruin
#

Yeah but as someone who lives somewhat local, it's basically just going to rip away a big part of the hobby for me

#

Like I'll legitimately need to decide whether I spend a fortune or just sit at home, the latter will probably happen more

#

Either that or apparently residents have complained it'll just push people onto their streets, which to be fair, is probably exactly what I'll be doing

#

Will happily walk an extra 15 minutes if it saves $$$, but no doubt paid parking will just expand and put a stop to that eventually

Fortunately it's not every area up there by any means yet, and looks like I can just accept a longer walk and park in residential areas looking at the maps, but no doubt they'll start metering residential roads for non locals eventually. Jetstream has been driving a lot of the wild weather this last month, it's also over here often

#

I'm more into visual astro, so I use a 10" dob for that, but have access to a 30" scope at a more local astro club

#

Or 18" at the darker site if others are there with them

#

This was my main target last week, spotting a supernova in a galaxy ~150 million ly away, was interesting (not my photo, I again did it visually using the eyeball camera)

static ruin

Unfortunately as things develop, the site with the 30" is getting worse, but can still see a lot of interesting stuff

#

Couple of months ago I had seen the pillars of creation with that 30" dob for my first time, jaw just dropped

#

Needed a filter, but sure enough, there's just 3 distinct pillars visually, was insane

Yeah for once I'm actually hoping it changes tomorrow/Christmas and falls apart, otherwise would definitely keep an eye out on it. Good chance the weather will be fine most of the day, just the chance of big storm

Violent thunderstorms are likely across eastern Australia this Christmas, rivalling some of the most intense and widespread storm outbreaks of the past few decades.

#

Seen some storm chasers comment it's one of the most potent setups they've seen in a long time, but that's talking large scale across NSW/QLD, so some areas will get nothing, others may get hit hard. edit: Conditions also put a tornado very much in the realm of possibility in the more northern parts of NSW into QLD
