It depends, this storm I only had a few drops, I went back to the car because of the strong winds, was standing under a lot of trees, and the car was also parked under trees, so a falling branch was the bigger concern lol

Thing is ideal photo location isn't in the storm, it's just outside it, in a perfect scenario I try to setup in the path of the storm to get the shots, then out before the rain ever hits. In practice, sometimes I just deal with rain on the camera, but that depends on the gear and ones risk tolerance

Heck to use today as an example, I was on a storm prior to that one, I abandoned it since it was a) not producing much lightning, b) photographically it was actually not great since it was so close and c) the rain/hail intensity was rapidly picking up, so wasn't worth sitting there.

Noted the squall line, one location I wanted was too far to make it in time, so went for another that gave me a lot of breathing room and distance to just enjoy and try for photos

fair enough i don't have the luxury of my own car yet it seems like you really do need one and a good location which i don't have because i sorta live in a concrete jungle you could say but i do a couple open fields nearby which could be decent the only problem is the risk of getting my gear soaked it's wether sealed but only under light rain conditions

You'll get there, just need more luck. Just apply the same principle as above I suppose, you don't want to be in the storm, ideally you want to be outside it. If you see one approaching, try to find some kind of clear view and just go for it, if you have to walk or something, could take a water proof bag or something to stick the camera in before rain hits

You try and be a good team player and text the after hours number to let them know that you're ill and won't be able to make your shift the following day so that they have ample time to get a replacement for you and they gaslight you with BS that you can't send text messages to that and it's not appropriate to call that number for that reason anyway...meanwhile, the clients father rang the damn after hours number multiple times on the Saturday and not only received no answer but no reply...
