so factual

serene ibex
#

How big is the photography industry in Australia

#

ie how easy is it to get a job as a photographer in Australia

static ruin
#

How long is a piece of string

#

Depends on what type of photography you want to do, your level (both photography skill, and marketing skills, reputation makes a difference), location can make a heck of a difference etc

coral crescent
#

everything punther said

static ruin
serene ibex
coral crescent
#

but also emphasis of skill, genre and location

serene ibex
#

Cert3 Qualifcation

coral crescent
#

oh I forgot you could take certs in photography

#

basically useless for me though

#

I think acheivements are more important than qualifications

static ruin
#

I mostly shoot casual so can't really give an answer, just more things to think about. Assistant freelance is still somewhat vague, I imagine there's some way to go about finding assistant positions, difficult part will be building up that portfolio

coral crescent
#

along with experience

foggy steppe
#

Networking more important than any skills

coral crescent
#

I'm also casual-ish but I've been working as an assistant photographer for a while

serene ibex
#

I think as of next year, I would have a year of wielding a camera on me

foggy steppe
#

Be a shit photographer and just work a bunch of jobs and meet lots of people/connections

coral crescent
#

yeah that sounds right actually

serene ibex
#

My statement or @foggy steppe ?

coral crescent
#

Ionas

#

a year of experience isnt a lot

#

an internship would do you good for experience

#

Yes

#

I'm not trying to be harsh

serene ibex
#

I know your not

coral crescent
#

but I remember being on the same part of the dk KEKL

#

just keep shooting

static ruin
#

I never left the valley

coral crescent
#

The oppurtunities will come eventually

#

how old are you?

serene ibex
serene ibex
coral crescent
#

even more

#

yeah an internship would be nice

#

it helps a lot for actually applying for jobs

serene ibex
#

Say, what is on offer actually?

coral crescent
#

I'm not sure, I'm not old enough to be considering serious Jobs yet

#

got offered my internship a while ago and just took that

serene ibex
#

Would it be worth looking into after my cert3?

coral crescent
#

Yes

#

An internship will do more than a cert imo

#

Achievements even more so

serene ibex
#

The cert3 would be the cherry

#

The internship, the cake

#

Agreed Oliv?

coral crescent
#

internships are a lot of the experience

#

the cert is the nice bonus on top of that

#

but another I'd like to mention again are achievements in general, competitions etc

coral crescent
#

not a neccecity to get hired

#

but they'll definetly help

serene ibex
#

That is the cream in the cake

#

Or the Icing

coral crescent
#

yeah I didn't use the cake analogy here cause I'd put more value on it

#

it's what got me my internship GiggleQuag

serene ibex
#

What you doing for it?

coral crescent
#

I edit all the stuff the main photographer for the school shoots

#

I'll do shoots myself as well sometimes

serene ibex
#

And you shoot what now?

coral crescent
#

Sports mainly

#

not my specialty field but also something I can do easily

serene ibex
#

I want concert photography to be my specialty one day

coral crescent
#

Reqy does that

#

often tells me how much of a pain lighting is

#

concert photography is hard

serene ibex
#

just because its hard doesnt mean it isnt possible

coral crescent
#

no of course not

#

it's hard but it's very rewarding

errant linden
coral crescent
#

mostly yeah

errant linden
#

oh school

#

aight

coral crescent
#

I can't send of it here cause of contract stuff

errant linden
#

ye tru

serene ibex
#

but yeah Oliv, I might look into a internship

errant linden
#

Ive only done a couple paid gigs before highest one was originally $230 but got cut down to $190

errant linden
# serene ibex Cert3 Qualifcation

IMHO, experience and ability will trump certs. Photography is niche. Best bet, wedding photography assistant. IMHO. Don't expect great money. Expect hard work and long hours being a slave to the master photographer, oops, your employer. I would in all honesty, do the cert III and then go for a diploma. A fine arts degree is fine and dandy, but really doesn 't help you develop a portfolio, or business connections, or learn how to run a business vs a diploma, which does

coral crescent
#

agreed with all of this

#

thats why in the cake analogy its a cherry

errant linden
#

I"m not trying to be mean either (to the OP), just honest advice.

coral crescent
#

you don't need it, but its a nice touch

#

It'll help to get an internship thats for sure

#

but yeah merits and experience do trump certs

errant linden
#

if you're young, like 19, then a diploma is a great idea imho. You're young enough to still be able to push hard with study. Plenty of time to enter the workforce and gain valuable on hands experience. Plus, diploma tells an employer that you are committed. A cert 3 doesn't imho.

coral crescent
#

I laugh at a lot of uni degree shooters

errant linden
#

I don't know if we have much in the way of internship9s here?

coral crescent
#

some are good

#

but a lot of garbage that won't get far

errant linden
coral crescent
#

yep

errant linden
#

all theory, no practical

coral crescent
#

they read all the books but can't click a button

#

yep, I've almost never touched a thing when it comes to photography theory

serene ibex
#

I guess pick an internship with a diploma

errant linden
#

I wanted to do a diploma in photography a year ago, and could have gotten the government funding to do it for nothing (I was on DES with Mission employment)

coral crescent
#

yet I'm gonna be sitting in queensland museum soon GiggleQuag

errant linden
#

that would be the best option yes

coral crescent
#

theory means jackshit

serene ibex
#

ikr

coral crescent
#

it'll always be that way to me when it comes to photography

#

click buttons, move sliders until you understand

#

Only when you reach that point of where you need to understand what those sliders are doing should you go into theory

errant linden
#

unfortunately, I am working ~45 hours/fortnight, and each unit was 10 hours per week, and they wanted me to do a minimum of 3 units per semester (so 30 hours per week). At my age, and with my mental cognitive functions, there was no way that I could do this

coral crescent
#

the tone curve is a very good example

#

when you start out you can really do whatever, doesnt really matter

#

but as you get better

#

the importance of it becomes clearer

#

and just how much you can do with it

serene ibex
#

look I say leave it there for the time being due to certain peoples timezones but I appreciate the insights

errant linden
#

I'm looking to get formally diagnosed for asd and adhd (and probably odd and ied too imho) and that would qualify me for 1 subject per semester and I could handle that, unfortunately, I dropped off DES and it's near impossible now under workforce australia to get back on it

#

so no funding anymore...and I can't afford 13k for the diploma

#

plus, I'm not a people person, so wedding and portraiture aren't my cuppa tea and wildlife and landscape are far far far too hard to break into and make a reasonable income these days

coral crescent
#

yeah I have no plans to make money with wildlife right now

errant linden
#

not being negative, that's an honest self-assessment

coral crescent
#

eh I'd say I'm fairly decent, but it's just the industry is filled with monsters

#

shooters with decades of experience

errant linden
#

yup. Although Jan has only been doing wildlife for 10 years or so

#

as has Duade

#

I've only been doing birding photography for 18 months, so after 10 years, I am hoping to be ~75% the quality of those guys

coral crescent
#

ehh I've been doing wildlife for about a year

#

but I've been shooting for about 2

errant linden
#

I'm an old fart, so have been shooting since 1988

#

good at the technical side, but very poor creatively, and haven't pushed myself to excel at any 1 genre

coral crescent
#

I'm the opposite, kinda dumb at the technical stuff but I'm fuckin solid at creative stuff

errant linden
#

bought a Leica IIIf around 6 months ago, still need to get a CLA done it, but hope to start doing some film based street photography with it. NOt so much interested in the people, more learning more about that type of genre out of curiousity

#

creativity trumps technical every day imho

coral crescent
#

yeah agreed, but there comes a point where you need to know the technical stuff

#

reaching that point now and I hate it

errant linden
#

for that reason I wanted to get a home studio to try and improve my people skills a bit and learn about that genre. I like the technical and creative aspects of studio portraiture a lot

coral crescent
#

yeah fair

#

I honestly can't give an answer as to what style of wildlife I specialise in

#

I change it from photo to photo

errant linden
#

just looking at my test images from yesterday - trying out 1/4000 and f8 for BIFs (larger raptors such as Black Kites) to see if images are sharper. So far, despite not having many front lit opportunities yesterday is that it is consistently sharper than my previous 1/2000 f7.1 settings

coral crescent
#

Ah I just don't really care much about sharpness now

#

as long as decently sharp I'm happy

errant linden
#

gonna drop the R3 from H+ to H FPS too (with my older 1st gen 500f4 that's 14fps to 9fps) to see if that helps with AF accuracy (I suspect that it will)

coral crescent
#

At the end of the day, to the general audience, not many people are gonna care about sharpness

errant linden
#

I want to excel

coral crescent
#

unless the photo is reliant on being extremely sharp, like dedicated birds, it doesnt matter that much

errant linden
#

so I'm pushing myself hard to get better with fieldcraft and technical aspects and creativity

coral crescent
#

and if your photo is reliant on being incredibly sharp, chances are you've ignored everything else

#

theres no harm in having a sharp image, all the better, just don't care wildly much about it

errant linden
#

I disagree

#

I prefer to get it right in camera than in PP

#

with that said, I typically do very minimal sharpening in PP anyway

coral crescent
#

well you can't fix an unsharp image

errant linden
#

exactly

coral crescent
#

I'm just saying people shouldnt obsess over it, composition and everything else matter leagues more

errant linden
#

the R3 is garbage, at least with a 1st gen 500f4 prime with birds coming at you head on

#

not even a 10% keeper rate imho

#

Sony and Nikon are far better in this respect

coral crescent
#

I switched my shooting style from taking pictures of birds to taking pictures with birds in them

#

I pay more attention to everything else in the shot more than the bird honestly

errant linden
#

well animal eye detect AF makes composition easier

#

EVF makes getting the exposure right easier

coral crescent
#

sure it makes it easier, it's really nice to have for sure

#

but gear doesnt make the photographer

#

sure great gear will help for sure

errant linden
#

it makes the job easier

#

but it still takes skill

coral crescent
#

Very much

errant linden
#

and experience

#

I am much better with BIFs now than 6 months ago

coral crescent
#

I don't doubt that

#

But like I said, its not good to get hooked up on the techincal stuff too much

#

just going out there and shooting without getting hooked on everything being as sharp as possible, especially with wildlife where the moment is everything, is just much better

errant linden
#

20 years of IT my brain is wired that way

#

plus ASD and hyper focus too

#

mmm mask in lightroom isn'tw orking

#

now have to figure out why

#

i find colour range mask better with BIFS as subject fucks up on their wing tips

#

Black Kite from yesterday

inner ether
#

Is that a screenshot>

errant linden
#

nope

#

JPG reduced to 2400px longest side

inner ether
errant linden
#

I don't want super size jpgs mate. quality set to 12

inner ether
errant linden
#

I have a strong suspicion that the mark 1 500f4 prime is showing signs of softness vs the mark 2 version (or modern RF glass) and the AF is signiticantly inferior too)

errant linden
inner ether
#

Its from 1999, sorry

errant linden
#

well duh, I realise this

#

it's still a very good lens. It suffers when compared to newer versions, but that applies to anything

#

it'll smoke a sigma 150-600c any day of the week in all areas

inner ether
#

ye

errant linden
#

the mark 2 is my goal

#

no way Ill ever be able to afford new RF glass for a prime

inner ether
#

its 6k on MPB

errant linden
#

Australia here. seeing some go locally for AUD 8.5k

inner ether
#

here it's 10k AUD

#

converted

errant linden
#

most are around the 10.5k aud

#

which matches the price that you are seeing

foggy steppe
#

500 f4 certainly has no sharpness issues on 24mp

errant linden
#

I am tempted, if the 200-800 RF is true, and around AUD 4k as rumoured, and it's sharp enough, to keep the mark 1 prime and grab the zoom

inner ether
#

Get the 100-300 as an add-on

errant linden
#

the RF600 f4 would be my dream

errant linden
#

that's gonna be USD 10k

inner ether
#

its 12k euro

#

Cuz it exists already

errant linden
#

20k aud

#

big and heavy and far too short for birds

inner ether
#

Like your 500 F4 isnt "big and heavy"

errant linden
#

the rf100-300 will probably be heavier at a guess

inner ether
#

What?

#

500 F4 is like

#

1.4kg heavier

errant linden
#

yep just checked

#

but it's way too short for birds

#

100-300 won't cut it

inner ether
#

it handles TC's super well

errant linden
#

at best, even with the 2x TC, it'll be 200-600, still too short

#

I currently shoot with 700mm reach and that's a nice sweet spot

#

and I know a lot of very experienced and very good birding photographers who shoot with the 500mm f4 mark 2 and the mark 3 1.4x tc

late parcel
#

I really wanna stick a 2x TC on my 500mm but it’s f6 🥲

#

And I do most of my shooting in shadows

errant linden
#

when I retire in 15 or so years, I aim to get a R1 II and RF 600f4 II with my superannuation

coral crescent
#

I just don't give a damn about focal lengths

errant linden

#

@late parcel which body you shooting on?

late parcel
#

inner ether

I loved using it

late parcel
#

😂

#

I’m getting so confused by it

inner ether
#

By?

#

Cuz it's probably the easiest fuji body DogeKek

late parcel
#

Took a break from it and went to my old Nikon D300s and now I can’t work out any of the settings and what not

late parcel
inner ether
#

I own the XH1

#

and rented the XH2

late parcel
#

Oooo

inner ether
#

and the transition

#

was flawless

#

Just had to get used to PASM in the first 30 minuutes

#

and then had to learn that I have an ISO button on the top right

#

and that was it

#

disabled some buttons that I was pressing

foggy steppe
#

xh2 holy fuck

inner ether

and i was good to go

late parcel
#

I love my XH2, I’m just a super slow learner

late parcel
foggy steppe
#

it is good tho

late parcel
#

Mmmm

late parcel
#

Beautiful

inner ether
#

Worked like a charm

late parcel
#

I really wanna stick a 600mm on mine but I can’t find one cheap enough anywhere 😭

foggy steppe
#

werent you a birder or something

inner ether
#

pretty uninteresting since its cars

#

but regardless

late parcel
#

I’m doing all my birds on my super old D300s with a second hand sigma 500mm that can’t focus properly

late parcel
foggy steppe
#

fuji only has like

inner ether
#

They dont have teleprimes

foggy steppe
#

2 lenses that will work for it lol

#

100-400 and 150-600

inner ether
#

you need to adapt Canon EF

late parcel
#

Yeah

inner ether
foggy steppe
#

no shot in hell that resolves

#

its already soft on a7r

inner ether
#

nop

#

doesnt resolve at all

#

lol

late parcel
#

But with adaptors you lose auto focus and stabilisation?

inner ether
#

If you get a metabones one

foggy steppe
#

you cant afford a teleprime anyways

#

or a $500 adapter

late parcel
#

🥲

foggy steppe
#

just use a fuji zoom

inner ether
#

you'd preferably want a metabones ultra

#

whichi s 800 euro

#

so around 1200 AUD

foggy steppe
#

both the zooms are ok

#

and almost resolve xh2

#

lol

inner ether
#

100-400 resolves XH2 afiak

late parcel
#

I can’t get anything at the moment

#

Because I’m so broke

inner ether
#

The fact this is basically

#

130% crop

late parcel
#

But I also want to shoot planes and what not

foggy steppe
#

whats this sigma 500mm btw

#

500 f4?

late parcel
#

Gosh I don’t know

#

Lemme check

foggy steppe
#

is it 3kg lol

late parcel
#

4.5-6.3

late parcel
foggy steppe
#

oh 150-500 i assume

late parcel
#

50-500

foggy steppe
#

oh

#

yeah that one can be replaced with no harm

#

fuji 100-400 or 150-600 eventually

coral crescent
#

fuji has a 150-600?

foggy steppe
#

yes

coral crescent
#

that shouldnt be suprising but it is

#

I just never think of fuji as a wildlife thing

foggy steppe
#

its not really a wildlife thing

late parcel
#

There was one for sale for 1000 a while ago but I had just gone broke on vet bills 😭

foggy steppe
#

but it exists just as an option

static ruin
coral crescent
#

oh it looks quite nice

static ruin
#

XH2/XH2s naturally are fine, though a lot of their lenses don't focus particularly fast

late parcel
foggy steppe
#

not good for a brand to just have zero wildlife options

#

so ofc they have 1 or 2

coral crescent
late parcel
#

Which are?

late parcel
#

The white makes me wanna puke

foggy steppe
late parcel
#

Ah right

coral crescent
static ruin
foggy steppe

errant linden
#

bsi stacked 20mp sensor (crop). very good IQ and shits on a R7 IQ wise.

#

at 1 of my local birding venues, I've seen 2x R5 users, a R6 user, myself with a R3 and 7 OM-1 users

#

at another, I've seen 1 sony A1 user, and 3x OM-1 users

#

no Canon users

#

for macro, nearly all macro shooters I know of, have switched to the OM-1 and 90mm macro lens

#

if I was starting afresh, with no prior investment, I wouldn't touch Canon with a 200 parsec barge pole

#

OM-1 would be my first choice, followed by the A1 and then the Z8

#

OM-1 2.5k AUD, 300f4 3.5k AUD, not sure on the 1.4x TC. but 840mm reach at f5.6

#

a Canon rf800 f5.6 lens is like 35k AUD

inner ether
#

I'd go Nikon > Canon > Olympus

errant linden
#

and the lens alone is heavier than the entire OM-1 rig

inner ether
#

Simply because 48mpx stacked?

#

Nothing's gonna beat that

errant linden
#

45mp stacked

#

the A1 is 50mp stacked

inner ether
#

And you can adapt Nikon F glass

errant linden
#

so it beats the z9/z8

inner ether
#

A1 is god slow compared to Z8

#

in terms of AF

#

Lens selection for tele is also hot garbage

errant linden
#

in terms of resolution and DR and high ISO performance and also AF performance

#

(just on the AF performance)

inner ether
#

Z8/Z9 AF is quite a bit better than the A1

errant linden
#

hell, artie morris switched to a A1

#

after 40 odd years using a Canon setup

inner ether
#

The Z8/Z9 got some firmware updates, shit improved massivelyt

errant linden
#

and I value his opinion far more than some random on teh net

inner ether
#

Ah ur one of those loll

errant linden
#

nope. You're just a random with no reputation, spouting favouritism as "fact"

#

I'm not saying the z8/z9 are bad btw, they are very very good, only slightly inferior to the A1

#

with or without firmware updates

timber spruce
#

lol

errant linden
#

Nikon glass is 100% better than Sony no argument there

#

Canon is a distant 3rd place as it is falling further and further behind Sony (which makes the Nikon z8/9 sensor btw)

inner ether
#

What 😭 Canon is in no way in last place

#

Cuz EF - RF adapter exists

timber spruce
#

loool

errant linden
#

which exist for both Sony and Nikon...so your point is?

#

Canon cripples older glass too when used on a R body...I have no proof, but I have strong suspicions that this is deliberate to "encourage" users to fork out for overpriced RF glass

#

on average, 35-50% more expensive than their EF counterparts

inner ether
#

What do you even shoot now

#

Cuz from memory you shot R3

errant linden
#

yeah, R3

#

probably gonna sell, and sell my 500f4 mark 1 and use my tax return to get a A1 and 200-600

inner ether
#

Wait for A1ii then

#

Cuz it wont be long till that thing comes out

errant linden
#

yeah true

inner ether
#

Which is gonna be LOADS better

#

Cuz they're gonna add their AI AF and shit like on the A7R5

errant linden
#

I reckon the R1 will be 45mp bsi stacked (no qpaf) and the r5II will be a normal 62mp sensor

inner ether
#

It will have qpaf

errant linden
#

A1 II will almost certainly have a global shutter and qpaf

inner ether
#

Dont think it will have GS

#

Otherwise WAY Too expensive

#

It's gonna gost 10k+ then

errant linden
#

working pros will pay for it

inner ether
#

Cuz 24mpx GS costs 6k already

errant linden
#

R1 will be 11k imho

inner ether
#

R1 will be 8.5K$ MSRP

errant linden
#

R3 was 8.5k on release

inner ether
#

AUD yeah

#

Not USD

errant linden
#

Aussie here, in the Aussie lounge server, so...talking AUD

inner ether
#

Wait I forgot im in down under lounge

errant linden
#

yup

inner ether
#

A1ii is gonna cost 15k+ then

#

if it has 50mpx GS

#

Gonna be 10k USD

#

if its 50mpx GS

errant linden
#

Sony is big enough to take a loss on the camera division (and make mega profits elsewhere) to price match the R1 and outperform it specs and performance wise imho

#

the profit and long term profit is in the system

#

much like microsoft's golden goose is office, not windows

#

why do you think microsoft never ported office to GNU/Linux 😉

#

a fuck load better o/s in every area, people would leave windows in droves...

inner ether
#

Then tell the 40 y/o working person to setup a Linux distro

errant linden

these days, it's pretty damn easy

#

20 years ago, not so
