Yes, after some googling, it appears to be a very specific gearbox that was used for some industrial vehicles

Like the giant trucks you see hauling coal out of strip mines

I don’t think it’s actually from a 1984 fire truck

Most normal trucks use more sensible gear arrangements

Basically it’s like a normal 6-speed but each position has a high and low gear + a double

So 18 speed transmissions are actually just 6 x 3 speed

For normal driving you don’t use most of the gears, you just shift straight into 5 and then skip every other gear

For a typical American 18 speed running through the gears is just a standard H Pattern. There's lo-lo and reverse tacked on to the left, but we generally don't care about those.

There's a High/Low range selector you toggle up and down with your fingers and a splitter(not doubler) you toggle forwards and back with your thumb. The mechanisms are all pneumaticically activated.

If you're heavy you start in one low, get up to shift speed(1500-1800), shift the splitter into high, let off the throttle to let it engage then keep accelerating.

Split down and shift next gear. Rinse and repeat to 5H(4th position on the H). Hit the high range toggle up and split each gear in the high range.

There's also no 3 sticks unless it's a super trucker tring to add flair and has the third stick activate the clutch or high/lo range

The old way was a twin stick system with a gear box and an auxiliary gear box behind it

I used to drive a 13 speed Peterbilt 388 hauling GVCW of 145,000 pounds.
