You have to get EXTREMELY close. Not too sure about flying birdies as I never take photos of them but I usually need a bird like less than 6m and close to eye level for a keepable photo.

There's plenty to see there. The majority is mallards, swans, etc. Depending on where you go, you might find herons and other birds. All the ones I've been to also have a bird feeding station where you can see a range of small birds, like robins and various tits.

@dark ermine How do you take photos remotely with your camera and wait for the bird to fly by? Because you have to focus and maybe adjust some settings quickly.

dark ermine
#

I have my backyard pretty curated to where the feeders are placed around specific branches the birds are inclined to perch on, making it easier to target. i.e

undone slate
#

Did you use maximum zoom and wait for the bird to come, or how did you do it?

undone slate
naive fiber

I do want me a new lens

#

200-500?

#

Glad f mount lenses are significantly cheaper than z mounts though

dark ermine
#

lmao yeah, paired with a stable surface / tripod and it's a cheat code. im already ready to upgrade my lens though, converting the sigma c 150-600mm with a FTZ II, the FX sensor size is much less forgiving on the limits of the sigma

undone slate
#

I want to get the Z6 III + 180-600mm lens, and maybe maybe in the future get the z8.

#

and also i want it for astrophotography...

#

@dark ermine But is there a significant difference in quality between a Z6 III and a Z8?

naive fiber
#

It would be extremely cool with this setup

#

I constantly scare birds with it so it would be cool

dark ermine
#

I also picked up a see through blind for like 80 bucks off amazon, that's helped a ton too

dark ermine
grizzled nebula
#

Z8 is a higher end camera

naive fiber
dark ermine
#

but yanno, the lens you put on it is more important, what I did, keeping the sigma and upgrading my body probably wasn't the smartest thing lol

undone slate
naive fiber
#

You will get better crops, focus (I believe), and noise on the z8

#

But a worse lens on a z8 will most definitely look worse than a z6 with a good lens

grizzled nebula
#

Z6III i'd image has better high iso performance due to it's 24mp sensor

naive fiber
#

Does the z8 do the cool raw resolution changing that the d850 does

undone slate
#

And why is the Z8 more expensive?

naive fiber
#

Low raw, medium raw, fine raw

naive fiber
#

Mainly

undone slate
#

And if I buy the Z6 III, would you recommend I buy the Z8 after years of use?

naive fiber
#

No

undone slate
#

why

naive fiber
#

There will be better cameras by then

#

Years is a while

grizzled nebula
#

Z8II/Z9II i'd expect will be released soon

naive fiber
#

What's your budget anyway

#

Having a z8 isn't cheap

#

Lenses are quite costly and that's a massive factor you must take into account

undone slate
undone slate
grizzled nebula
#

i mean it's 2 completely different cameras

#

and i'd rather keep my camera cause i'd have to change all my lenses to nikon

#

i'm not getting a 600 F/4 prime that's as good as the 600 IS II for the price i got it for on nikon

undone slate
#

Why did you choose a Canon camera instead of a Nikon?

grizzled nebula

the Z8II would need to surpass the R5II by a lot for me to switch

that's the other thing too right? give it another couple years and you wont need new gear, just run it through the latest ai enhancer

also as long as it doesn't completely change the image its still the one YOU took

#

And if I ever decide to participate in a bird photography contest or something like that, how do I participate?

naive fiber
#

The video is pretty cool as well, took like a week to setup

#

It gives me a notification when a bird comes so I can run and take a photo, and records, classifies them into type, and stops recording when it disappears

naive fiber
#

Simple as that

dark ermine
naive fiber
#

And notifications are done by home assistant

#

It took many late nights

#

This runs all on my server

scarlet tulip
#

That’s a neat setup

#

And the feeder looks good, it’s not some polycarb monstrosity that ruins every photo it’s in

naive fiber
#

Thanks

#

I just had some spare balsa lying around so I set it up

naive fiber
#

And waterproof it

#

I only attract bluetits and great tits right now sadly

undone slate
naive fiber
#

It's different for different competitions

undone slate
#

Does anyone here have a feeder for goldfinches?

#

I'd like to use a feeder like this to attract goldfinches, so I can take close-up photos of them.

#

If anyone has a goldfinch feeder, please let me know what food you use in it.

Only type of photo I like at feeders is macro shots

#

It’s hard though and 2 extension tubes on my 200-600 weren’t enough

#

I should try like 5-7cm next of extension tubes

#

And clean my window

#

Because the birds get scared when seeing the window open

naive fiber
#

Do you have curtains? What backing colour are they

tough hull
#

I do but they are never there

naive fiber
#

If the window is open, they view it almost like a big mouth

There are a ton of bird stickers though

Then pull the curtains out to make sure they don't see you

tough hull
#

With window I can stand 1-0.5m away from the birds without getting scared btw

naive fiber
#

Place the camera inbetween the curtain and poke it through the hole of the mesh

#

I did something like this but because my curtain is white backed the mesh isn't needed

#

They don't see me at all, and don't get scared

#

One thing though is set the shutter to electric, as mechanical scares them, I don't have this luxury

tough hull
#

What can also try if opening the door, and overlaying the curtains and then my lens is long enough to like split through there so there’s no mesh needed

Also get a remote shutter

I believe your camera may even have remote shutter and focus with your phone

I’m really struggling with dxo

That’s why I cropped so weird

naive fiber

What editing in it?

naive fiber
tough hull
naive fiber
#

I don't know why it's so bad

tough hull
#

And like all the masking is shit

naive fiber
#

Subject detection works ok on clearer subjects, if it doesn't I just click on it and it usually works

tough hull
#

Denoise though 😍

naive fiber
#

If that impresses you try pureraw

#

It's that on steroids

tough hull
#

I actually should

#

And also

#

The denoise is 100x better than adobe because

#

If you have a Milky Way or night picture with stars

#

The denoise doesn’t kill the stars

naive fiber
#

One thing is that pureraw can auto import into lightroom

#

Just select the photos you want to batch edit and press start

#

Then when it's done you will see it in lr

tough hull
#

i dont have money for lightroom

#

bro

#

i am moving back to affinity and buy Pure raw 6 for denoise instead

charred holly
#

DxO denoise and sharpening isn't that impressive compared to Lightroom imo

#

But CA correction is the best I have seen in any program

naive fiber
#

I found them to be pretty on par

charred holly
#

Lightroom will usually require manual correction, but not Photolab

naive fiber
#

Pureraw is better than photolab

#

Photolab was worse than LR though

charred holly
#

Eeh...

naive fiber
#

I found pureraw to keep more detail of say feathers than photolab

#

I don't have anything on hand but that's what I found

charred holly
#

Results may vary, Photolab produces pretty good results without much effort but when I need extensive edits, Lightroom is unbeatable

#

Pureraw and Photolab should be the same though, they share AI tech

naive fiber
#

I found pureraw to be better for some reason

#

Photolab just didn't look that good

charred holly
#

Weird

naive fiber
#

It kind of just nuked all detail

charred holly
#

Did you apply the same model?

naive fiber
#

Yep xd3

#

Or whatever

#

Photolab just looked the same as regular denoise

charred holly
#

xd3 is amazing when the photo is already very sharp

#

Else it hallucinates ugly fake details

naive fiber
#

I did have sharp photos but it just made them less so

What lens did you use and how far away were you from the bird, and what is the bird's name?

fast knoll
#

one from today

fast knoll
#

but xd3 should never make ur photos less sharp unless something is very wrong with ur photo

#

i only use 25 sharpness usually bc my lens is alr hella sharp

undone slate

how did you get that close???

undone slate
# fast knoll

Almost all of your bird photos look like you took them from very close up; you're good at it.

undone slate
fast knoll
#

these are my top like 5% photos lol

undone slate
#

wow

fast knoll
#

if it's sideways the whole head/body will be sharp

#

and if it's facing toward u then the head will be sharp

#

it's not ideal to have sharp body but out of focus head

#

a few examples

undone slate
#

I think the angle is fine in my photo

fast knoll
#

it's fine but not great

#

u won't get the whole head in focus with that angle

undone slate
#

and how could it be improved?

fast knoll
#

if the bird were facing toward u it would be much better

#

nothing u can do in that moment though that's just how nature works

#

gotta be in the right place at the right time

scarlet tulip
#

The reason you don’t see many good bird photos shot at that angle is because it’s a poor angle

#

People either don’t take the shots, or they take them and delete them later

undone slate
#

Well, it depends if you want the whole head to be visible, but it would also be much more complicated to take a picture of him almost from the front.

scarlet tulip
#

Would it really be

fast knoll
#

birds dont listen to u

#

u have to position yourself carefully

undone slate
#

But in the photo I took, do you think it would look better if more of the head was visible?

undone slate
#

Could this, for example, be better?

scarlet tulip
#

It’s a matter of patience

fast knoll
#

imagine u were on the other side of the bird and u took a photo

#

that would look super cool

#

u would be able to see the bird grabbing the worm unobstructed

magic crown
#

it's a really good one

undone slate
#

But if you want to take a picture of him hunting, I don't know if it would be so good to take it looking towards you; it would be very, very complicated, and I don't know if it would turn out better, maybe different, but I don't know if better.

fast knoll
#

no it would definitely be better

scarlet tulip
#

Cropping could be called digital zoom yes

undone slate
#

But doesn't that reduce the quality?

magic crown
#

yeah it does

scarlet tulip
#

Sure, but modern sensors can take it

#

My limit for a crop is 2000p on the long edge, anything wider is fine

magic crown
#

modern sensors can handle huge crops now and with a good denoiser like DXO PureRaw you can recover even more detail

charred holly
#

The biggest bottleneck for cropping are lenses tbh

magic crown
#

yeah

charred holly
#

Cropping my 16-300 was... huuuuh... no great

you can have the best camera if the lens is bad you can do nothing
