And flash is much less harmful than a solid spotlight
Anyways this whole conversation is dumb. You came here to shame someone
Sudden, bright bursts are worse
👍
banded bay cuckoo
correct
Well not without a reason, I’ve got an ethical point but sure let’s drop it
cook
You knew where they were tho
That's pretty cool
We have pittas as well but I have literally never seen one
sg birding scene is very open with locations
theres literally like countless grp chats
ah yeah fucked up
Ph? Philippines or what
mmmm bord
was on a pier
surprisingly all of these were shot on a 70-200
wish i brought my 100-400, but it was fine i guess
You have to get EXTREMELY close. Not too sure about flying birdies as I never take photos of them but I usually need a bird like less than 6m and close to eye level for a keepable photo.
saw 2 ducks, made 1 step forward and they fucked off
if they're not in a lake they get spooked too damn easily
all i see are damn mallards ffs
going back to camargue soon
so i'll be seeing some nice ones this time normally
A couple from a recent visit to a bird reserve. Went to fine tune camera settings and technique. Thought having plenty of subjects available will help. got a couple more that ive not yet edited
This oul knows how to pose
yes, you're right, I'll try
Yes, that's difficult...
you can try with flying birds, but what camera do u have?
I have ducks in a nearby park, so those are easier to photograph because they are used to people.
Right that's 0 birds this morning
yes but if they're park ducks.
2nd is nice but that bokeh looks a little harsh
Try get rid of that in post
You could probably just reduce sharpness with a mask and it'll fix it
5d mark iv with 150-600
Thanks, didn't pay attention to how bokeh looked before, assumed you just leave it as is. Will be sure to keep this in mind for future edits
You have to get close for a specific type of bird photo
But there are other ways
Never seen a duck like that before, nice way to show the wing colors
Sometimes distant perchers can work too
third one

Do you guys sharpen your closer images for more detail in the feathers?
I don't know if I should or shouldn't
you can just be careful not to overdo it make things look fake
@undone slate fym skull emoji
It's a fine balance
It's definitely hard though to strike that
But I would rather go under than over
I usually don't sharpen at all past the default amount LR does when opening a pic
if the pic is soft I'll just leave it as is or delete it
this pic is rly soft cos of heat haze since I shot it from inside a car but I liked it enough to keep
Mood & emotion > sharpness
I have been experimenting with sharpness
I like the effect but also dont
any thoughts?
I think it looks a tiny bit overdone but its a nice effect
Personally at a quick glance it looks nice
Bye bye cardinal
Man phalaropes are such sick birds
On an az bird trip right now
Oh sweet photo
soft.
window shot from this morning
Thoughts on the last one? Does the crop work or Is it a lost cause? The original was clipped at the back, and something in the foreground was out of focus, covering the feet.
depending on the foreground it may not be a problem
what's the uncropped look like?
spoonbill trying to pick up sticks smh should use a fork
cant remember what that was, i think it was from whatever i was perched on. the contrast throws it off if i try to include it in. There might be a way to mask that out or to reduce the impact but I took the easy way out c:
quick attempt at the mask, not great but i think the comp looks better. the clipped tail is still a bummer
nice fuck
donk
Egret are fun, haven't been able to get very close to one yet though. This was my best try.
This was mine
Go to a location in a village or city. They are less scared of humans there
This was at the middle of a roundabout, I need to work on my approach tactics lol
I need to re-edit mine once I buy photolab but this is my best egret shot
Raw looks like this, but I lost my adobe subscription the day I edited this image, after a short break from editing I turned computer back on and it got cancelled
Background looks super cool
This one looks amazing too, seagull looks a bit out of place there
It would be so cool if the background was a tad darker
Photolab isn't on free trial for you?
I fucked up this one lmao
Very sad
It is. It’s just suboptimal to use free trial when I don’t have holidays
I will though next week
Oh I see
Nice software it just has a couple annoyances
Because from Monday on I have two weeks holidays
What re those
It has some lacking features
Like auto rotate isn't there for example
I find it to be a bit slow, unsure why
And ai denoise doesn't work for me for some odd reason
It just looks like regular denoise
Good software though, fairly easy to use and I'm able to edit well enough in it
Damn
Yeah
Masking options are quite good, did this in it
Photo isnt the best quality wise but it helps give an idea
This is my only proper edit in dxo
tragic photo because of distance but that stretched worm looks kinda funny
especially that it dropped it, too bad focus missed
fuuuck missed focus
Easy to do when one is that close
yea at that angle it's hard to get everything in focus
The solution: take another pic
can't wait for sunday
Then don’t wait

Wait for Saturday instead
Whenever shooting this close I rapid burst and maybe get 2-3 that are in focus using small spot on the eye
For me it’s opposite lmao
weather sunday is apparently not gonna be amazing ofc
but atleast it's not gonna rain
pretty good for me since my familiy apparently planned to eat breakfast in a restaurant on Saturday out of nowhere??
finally swans are here again
what is this burger
sadly over two swans have crashed into power lines near me today :(
Does anyone have any recommendations for good wildlife photographers / portfolio?
Trying to get a feel for the range of images that are possible and also general themes / mood etc
morten hilmer has some rather unique ideas for photographing birds
the process of doing it
but i cant think of many "inspirational" portfolios since a lot of it is the bird itself and the thing it's doing
but with holy heat haze
look the temperature difference
I like Shelby, dunno his surname
He's 16 ish that makes it cooler tbh
i don't really like him he oversell his shots for a ok tier image
I think he's inspirational for being younger
I don't know of any truly inspirational bird photographers though
JuleTek
hurt my wrist with the 600 F/4 earlier
i don't trust my ball head so i barely use it
he is but the age is not really an excuse for me (even if its true for his age it's really good)
but for beginner he can be very inspirational
i don't hate what he do but i hate how he show his shots
It's a lot of talking though
I see what you mean
It's all for the minute I believe
yeah he oversell the shot sometimes it's even 2 minutes
and he repeat himself for sometimes shots who don't really being necessary
I do usually watch like 5s and then go to the end
The shots are pretty cool but it's every video
and he repeats himself sometimes for shots where it's not really necessary*
Not every shot deserves that
directly to the end for me

i watched 2 vids and stopped watching him
sometimes images talks more than speeches
I do watch him but only for the photos
gimme griffons on sunday
and the most ppl who actually like him/love him is beginners
The tawny owl photo was also just something that was not good
As rare as it was the photo was not that good tbh
show
i didn't see it
Wait nevermind that photo was pretty decent
yeah
in some photographer i pretty like there's Marc Shoeffel (how he speak about his shots is direct) and Vincent Munier (for his large composition)
one of the greatest image of Vincent Munier
pretty nice
damn that's very nice
yeah but with a 1 minute holy speech

do i switch to sony
what are we doing
Well it was 1/30
Oh wow
But like to me that one is not very useable
Could have gone higher shutter speed with higher iso to atleast try and get the face in semi focus
Dark area though
Yeah I would be annoyed but how much can you do in some cases
Could have gone higher iso and ss
Yeah shame
I love my r6ii cause 25600 iso is still useable 🤩
I can get up to like 6400 or hi1 before shittery
Idk what hi1 is
10000?
12800
Too high for most scenarios
It's 1 stop up 6400 yeah
Such a good sensor
I wish
I want a1ii but its literally not worth it at all
In any way
Id love that 300-600 f/4 tho
you have the a7V
or a6700 for aps-c
Mid ergo
If i go to sony its for the 50mp super fast readout sensor with 300-600 f/4
I'm also waiting to see what other cameras release
useless if you have already a good lens and a1 and a9 is for really specific photographer
Well id buy 300-600 so thats the very good lens
I cant even afford a standard zoom if i sell all my gear and buy that

Why would you swap to Sony
So its not happening any time soob
300-600
yeah but 4k for a body is not really worth it it's better to have a really good lens and a ok body than the opposite
4k?????
The fuck can that do that a 600 won’t
Zoom from 300-600
a body with 50mp from sony start at 4k
I’m struggling to imagine a time when birding would require this, especially birding at the ranges most people with big primes are working at
I dont want to do only birding, imma start doing more soon
If you were doing sports this would be more understandable, sure
don't buy something to do "more things" it's an error
But yh anyway im staying with canon cause ive invested too much atp
I wish i had an interesting place to shoot sports at
Had an f1 race in france but its now been stopped
Had a local football club who's pitch has just been cut in half by the city for more parking space 🤮
Anyway back to birding
I really really really hope i see those griffon vultures
i hop you will get some
Thank you
im on a vacation rn and i was hoping to get a bunch of birds i dont see often in vancouver but instead all i saw was a single goosd

wuh
Fuck dem clouds
Whopper swan
maybe dynamics if you have enough winds
I went there a few years ago and it was pretty good
Was only 2h from where i live too
Paul Ricard?
Yeah
Ive been at the monaco gp twice but its just kinda boring
Has a decent view at paul ricard
Unlike monaco
I don't see myself using anything under the max focal length for birding
So at that point I would get a prime if I had the money
Maybe unless the bird was right Infront of me, and even then I wouldn't be able to focus
lmao at Baronnie it's 200 spotted at one area

btw Verdon have a massive area while Barronie have very few spot but 100% appareance
Well theres over 150 spotted pretty much everytime at the feeding area usually
yeah like the Barronie
yeah but with more tourists
at this period they can be already there

Oh to see a kingfisher properly
I should go to a national park marshland and try spot one
I was lucky until last month, i had a kingfisher couple living in the river at the beach
I havent seen them in a while unfortunately
Love this pic
which one?
2nd one
Yeah we have bird spotting dens in national reserves
So that's a good thing
Got any room to
widen the crop below the bird?
I use lower focal lengths for shooting bif
I saw a peregrine falcon yesterday but didn't have my camera with me unfortunately
rip
i dont q rmb i think there is abit of space
i learned this the hard way
(multiple times)
For as far as that team is still French lmao, they're using merc engines now and everything is based in the UK
why is it always on the weekend
ill try to get a kingfisher picture tomorrow again
still nothing all that great
i think i really need a hide or something to mask my silhouette
would def help
the one i got a pic of was not shy at all so wasn't even needed
was so close to him
the ones where i go are quite shy
and really aware
but atleast there are multiple
i know of 3 at minimum
hopefully there'll be more activity in summer
the picture i sent above i could've kept uncropped that's how close i was
because that's when i go
Ik, im saying its cloudy cause im going there on the weekend
Im very unlucky
Been sitting by my pond since 6 am
Finally getting some decent shots of the tits
wish i had a pond
I live in a heavily rural area, so it wasn’t even horribly priced from what I’ve seen and my parents have told me
Ours and our grandparents property border each other, they have a dock on this side of the pond so I usually just walk this way to take photos
lucky
The only problem is the snakes it attracts
I love snakes
But most of the time they’re venomous and we have dogs outside
i have 1 small lake near me but it's in a private proprety so i can't access it unfortunately
And on the OTHER side of the pond is one of my friends fields, which has turkeys (trying to eat crops) which they let me shoot (both definitions)
Is there a spillway?
Find a land map and see if you can find any creeks or river access on public land
A sand bar at a river is perfect
there are some but they're very very small and usually not easy to photograph at
ahhh
i've got an animal protection place near me which i'm not meant to access but i still go to sometimes
i've even talked with some people and they didn't tell me to go away cause they know i'm doing photography
I shoot on an r50 as of right now, it’s insanely light, I usually put the body in one of my jacket pockets and walk a mile or so to a river bank
so many great spotted woodpeckers
That’s nice!
Our local park is kinda buns for birds, but the people there are the worst part. Got accused of taking pictures of someone😭
its mostly about littering and stuff like that
Lady, it’s a 100-400, if I wanted to take your picture I’d be way down the path😭
🙏
try 300-900 ffeq
starting to look like ill get the a6700 next week or after my london trip
NICE!
Idk what the canon equivalent of that is, but I looked at the specs and it’s sick🤤
i got told there was a golden eagle there 2 years ago
hopefully when i go there next i'll see one
Some old dude told me he saw an eagle at our park, didn’t believe him until the Merlin ID app showed a bald eagle call😭
I’m starting to think these wood ducks aren’t coming back
Its been exactly 2 hours
Bro
Someone on TikTok is FLEXING that they don’t use AF for wildlife
And it’s just out of focus photos in replies
😭
oh wait i've just found a new river access!
will need to go very early in the morning cause it's a dangerous road

Thailand trip now then back to London for birding
last one from previous trip. planning on going out to some wetlands next week to try to get some flight shots
Been meaning to go to the wetlands as well
R6II >
Nvm A6700 is much cheaper than i thought
duh
its more expensive
bcs its sony

no i just thought it was
a6700 is one of sonys cameras that actually offers a decent value
Why would an apsc cam be as expensive as a comparable ff cam
i mean there's only a 250 euros difference in price
Wait R6II gone back up in price?
wtf
Yeah true, but R6II dropped in price recently with the launch of R6III
i was seeing some for 1.2-1.3k just a few weeks ago
now i can't find one for under 1.5K
Everything has the past month lolol
time to sell
What war does to a global economy that runs on fossil fuels
There's plenty to see there. The majority is mallards, swans, etc. Depending on where you go, you might find herons and other birds. All the ones I've been to also have a bird feeding station where you can see a range of small birds, like robins and various tits.
I think different wetlands, atleast in the UK keep different species for conservation purposes
KESTREL!!
saw it while driving in texas
Today's haul. Join me as a seagull makes me absolutely crazy by hiding behind a fence... also a surprise nutria for some reason?
they are really far
nah they were very very close, phone mic is just dead
it was atleast 3 or 4 times louder than that
scops owl have a very large range
i heard them in a tree
imma go back on monday to check it out
https://www.instagram.com/aarvswl/ my brand new insta for wildlife 👀
one follower time to put the fries in the bag unc 💔 (yo fire pics hope you blow up or smth
)
imma be promoting the shit out of this instagram account
I have no luck at all
i'm going to try finding hoopoes
id be happy if the whole day was sunny but it was just the early morning
going to a hotspot in a few mins
go to bed earlier
Well the place i went to was pure shit
heard 3 birds
in 4h
it's a natural reserve that's meant to have animals but it's being ruined by tourists
Looks like the kind of place I'd go hunting feral goats
if it was private property
Goats love that kind of dry scrubland
@dark ermine How do you take photos remotely with your camera and wait for the bird to fly by? Because you have to focus and maybe adjust some settings quickly.
the z8. it does well to auto focus based off of motion or detection
https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z8/en/psm_auto_capture_155.html
I have my backyard pretty curated to where the feeders are placed around specific branches the birds are inclined to perch on, making it easier to target. i.e
I don't know if I could do that with the Z6 III that I want to buy.
Did you use maximum zoom and wait for the bird to come, or how did you do it?
https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z6III/en/adding_photo_auto_capture_405.html looks like it has it! not sure if the same performance though
that's nice!
holy shit thats insane lol
the sigma is realll soft at 600mm so I usually shoot 300-500, i upgraded to the z8 to get more cropping power, from a d7500 fx.
#1041487027255914566 message - this is a good example of the auto capture
Well, I now have a terrible camera 😭
I do want me a new lens
200-500?
Glad f mount lenses are significantly cheaper than z mounts though
lmao yeah, paired with a stable surface / tripod and it's a cheat code. im already ready to upgrade my lens though, converting the sigma c 150-600mm with a FTZ II, the FX sensor size is much less forgiving on the limits of the sigma
I want to get the Z6 III + 180-600mm lens, and maybe maybe in the future get the z8.
and also i want it for astrophotography...
@dark ermine But is there a significant difference in quality between a Z6 III and a Z8?
#💭・photo-lounge message
It would be extremely cool with this setup
I constantly scare birds with it so it would be cool
I also picked up a see through blind for like 80 bucks off amazon, that's helped a ton too
Z8 is a higher end camera
Something you will find is that the camera body matters less than you think
but yanno, the lens you put on it is more important, what I did, keeping the sigma and upgrading my body probably wasn't the smartest thing lol
wdym? they're both Z mount.
Yep
You will get better crops, focus (I believe), and noise on the z8
But a worse lens on a z8 will most definitely look worse than a z6 with a good lens
Z6III i'd image has better high iso performance due to it's 24mp sensor
Does the z8 do the cool raw resolution changing that the d850 does
And why is the Z8 more expensive?
Low raw, medium raw, fine raw
And if I buy the Z6 III, would you recommend I buy the Z8 after years of use?
No
why
Z8II/Z9II i'd expect will be released soon
What's your budget anyway
Having a z8 isn't cheap
Lenses are quite costly and that's a massive factor you must take into account
yep
Would you prefer to have the Z8 II when it comes out, or your current camera?
i mean it's 2 completely different cameras
and i'd rather keep my camera cause i'd have to change all my lenses to nikon
i'm not getting a 600 F/4 prime that's as good as the 600 IS II for the price i got it for on nikon
Why did you choose a Canon camera instead of a Nikon?
the Z8II would need to surpass the R5II by a lot for me to switch
because i like canon and i'm familliar with them
@undone slate what do you have now?
he has a shitty sony pns i think
Some shitty bridge super zoom
not even a bridge
Oh wow
At that point a phone is better 😭
But what's the budget for a camera
We have a massive range here we don't even know if a z6iii is in range for you
eh this is what he's got lol
let's put it this way, if you can manage to get a quality bird photo out of that, I would just upgrade to a basic intro kit and give flagship more time to cook new features
how much did you pay for yours?
This was taken on his camera I found
3.9K euros
But do you recommend I continue taking photos with my current camera?
about 3k under market price
i mean u can try learning some stuff with it but it won't produce any good images
holy fuck thats crazy
But sometimes the timing matters more than the quality.
Always
no tax, no customs
Actually no I read that wrong
was from a french seller
This is not an example of timing mattering more than quality
i mean having quality is also important, you can get 200x better images with a 1K kit
I'm just wondering how I missed the bird this badly
that….better than what ive ever shot 😔
the worse your gear, the more work you need to put in to get quality shots, which isn't necessarily a bad thing when you're learning, because you don't want to just rely on your gear, it will help you to learn how to time your shots, plan better...but personally i'd probably ditch the point and shoot and at least get an entry DSLR for a couple hundred so you can play with interchangeable lenses.
timing + quality 🔥
You're right, but for example this photo isn't too bad, it captured a good moment and it's not ugly.
yes, that's great.
there's no detail and it looks very mushy
Meh timing meh quality
lots of chromatic aberations aswell
nah this is nice
what lence
Was this taken at max focal length
yes
aarvas also has mad edit skills and that's another layer on top of shooting skill and gear
This is what happens when we shoot through windows
AARVS
thats sharp tho damn
it's not bad, put it through DXO and it's fixed easily
No the edited image is above lmao
This is raw
Insane diffraction from the window
And reflections
So it gave it a bit of haze on the bird
My dxo pureraw trial ran out the day this photo was taken so
ik, dxo is a denoising software but it can also add detail sometimes even if the image is not noisy
oh oof
I had photolab
top 1 biggest dxo shills
photoass
I'm drifting between free trials ok
mind sending raw raw?
Pff do I even have it?
I'm on holiday so I don't think so
I'll send it in 9 days if I remember
one of my fav images i took
that's the other thing too right? give it another couple years and you wont need new gear, just run it through the latest ai enhancer
but then the question becomes, is it even your photo anymore lol
just tell the ai to generate a pic of a bird ez
i mean not really
upgrading gear will always be helpful
This was the bird
also as long as it doesn't completely change the image its still the one YOU took
the ship of theseus territory
more birds in my garden than in a nature reserve smh
this is a really creative bird feeder platform
going to the gorges du verdon on tuesday or wednesday
wow
lucky the road was blocked completely this morning cause it rained all day there
And if I ever decide to participate in a bird photography contest or something like that, how do I participate?
Thanks
The video is pretty cool as well, took like a week to setup
It gives me a notification when a bird comes so I can run and take a photo, and records, classifies them into type, and stops recording when it disappears
You follow the rules of the competition
Simple as that
oh that's interesting, what do you use to record and detect?
Frigate does all that
And notifications are done by home assistant
It took many late nights
This runs all on my server
That’s a neat setup
And the feeder looks good, it’s not some polycarb monstrosity that ruins every photo it’s in
I wanted to varnish it to make the wood look more natural
And waterproof it
I only attract bluetits and great tits right now sadly
Yes, but where do I post the photos to participate?
By whatever means they say to
It's different for different competitions
Does anyone here have a feeder for goldfinches?
I'd like to use a feeder like this to attract goldfinches, so I can take close-up photos of them.
If anyone has a goldfinch feeder, please let me know what food you use in it.
Try peanuts
You may get woodpeckers
Nyjer for smaller finches
blue tits are peak
i find tits to like peanuts a lot, but they're probably popular with most birds
They get pretty boring once you live in a place with many of them
They are so nice but they get a bit boring after a while
There's a nest very close though that's probably why
You have to be very close though, like an arm to 2 arms length away for 200mm, so you can do the maths for yours
If anyone here has a bird feeder that works well and I can take pictures of it, please send me a photo.
yep
Only type of photo I like at feeders is macro shots
It’s hard though and 2 extension tubes on my 200-600 weren’t enough
I should try like 5-7cm next of extension tubes
And clean my window
Because the birds get scared when seeing the window open
Ah I know why
Do you have curtains? What backing colour are they
No
I do but they are never there
If the window is open, they view it almost like a big mouth
No bird has ever crashed lol
Lmao I thought it was obvious
This one looks like it's on the feeder
One thing is try set up a white mesh , and cut a hole in it
Nah I don’t even think we have those
Good idea lol thanks
My messages stopped sending
Yeah it'll brighten up what they see
Then pull the curtains out to make sure they don't see you
With window I can stand 1-0.5m away from the birds without getting scared btw
Place the camera inbetween the curtain and poke it through the hole of the mesh
I did something like this but because my curtain is white backed the mesh isn't needed
They don't see me at all, and don't get scared
One thing though is set the shutter to electric, as mechanical scares them, I don't have this luxury
What can also try if opening the door, and overlaying the curtains and then my lens is long enough to like split through there so there’s no mesh needed
#1041487027255914566 message
Yeah that's fine
Also get a remote shutter
I believe your camera may even have remote shutter and focus with your phone
634 likes, 43 comments. “Okay lazy might be a stretch. 😅 I placed my Sony A1 ii on a log, stepped back and controlled everything from my phone. Touch tracking let me lock focus the second a bird landed and with pre-capture running I never missed the moment. Just patience and a log. And The birds had no idea I was there. Have you ever tried ...
true but its not the best and i either need clear path to the cam or a cable connection
Watch the video and see if you are able to do that
Unsure about the logistics but something cool
Af really has to work good
Because often it tends to defocus the subject is something is very close
I see
Unless it sees the eyes
My photo above was a similar ish setup
It’s freaking snowing rn
Damn
Yeah I was lucky with this one
I’m really struggling with dxo
The picture of the jay was just the problem that he was at the edge of the frame unfortunately
That’s why I cropped so weird
What editing in it?
What are you finding hard compared to say lr
The radial gradient and subject detection are weird
Radial gradient is definitely weird
I don't know why it's so bad
And like all the masking is shit
Subject detection works ok on clearer subjects, if it doesn't I just click on it and it usually works
Denoise though 😍
I actually should
And also
The denoise is 100x better than adobe because
If you have a Milky Way or night picture with stars
The denoise doesn’t kill the stars
One thing is that pureraw can auto import into lightroom
Just select the photos you want to batch edit and press start
Then when it's done you will see it in lr
i dont have money for lightroom
holy
bro
i am moving back to affinity and buy Pure raw 6 for denoise instead
DxO denoise and sharpening isn't that impressive compared to Lightroom imo
But CA correction is the best I have seen in any program
I found them to be pretty on par
Lightroom will usually require manual correction, but not Photolab
Eeh...
I found pureraw to keep more detail of say feathers than photolab
I don't have anything on hand but that's what I found
Results may vary, Photolab produces pretty good results without much effort but when I need extensive edits, Lightroom is unbeatable
Pureraw and Photolab should be the same though, they share AI tech
Weird
It kind of just nuked all detail
Did you apply the same model?
xd3 is amazing when the photo is already very sharp
Else it hallucinates ugly fake details
I did have sharp photos but it just made them less so
lol
can u send an example?
ive never seen that happen before
r5
nice
next saturady i'll go do some beared vulture if i have chances and otherwise griffon vultures
can someone go to #🦀・creatures
holy detail

What lens did you use and how far away were you from the bird, and what is the bird's name?
100-500, super close, blue gray gnatcatcher
but xd3 should never make ur photos less sharp unless something is very wrong with ur photo
i only use 25 sharpness usually bc my lens is alr hella sharp
how many meters?
how did you get that close???
like 1-2m
wow
With my current camera, this is the most I can do.
what setup
Almost all of your bird photos look like you took them from very close up; you're good at it.
sony cybershot dsc-hx60v
yes i dont even edit the ones that dont have potential
these are my top like 5% photos lol
wow
one thing u can do technique wise is make sure the bird is either facing sideways or angled toward u
if it's sideways the whole head/body will be sharp
and if it's facing toward u then the head will be sharp
it's not ideal to have sharp body but out of focus head
a few examples
I think the angle is fine in my photo
and how could it be improved?
if the bird were facing toward u it would be much better
nothing u can do in that moment though that's just how nature works
gotta be in the right place at the right time
The reason you don’t see many good bird photos shot at that angle is because it’s a poor angle
People either don’t take the shots, or they take them and delete them later
Well, it depends if you want the whole head to be visible, but it would also be much more complicated to take a picture of him almost from the front.
Would it really be
yes that's why bird photography is hard
birds dont listen to u
u have to position yourself carefully
yep
But in the photo I took, do you think it would look better if more of the head was visible?
100%
Could this, for example, be better?
imagine u were on the other side of the bird and u took a photo
that would look super cool
u would be able to see the bird grabbing the worm unobstructed
But if you want to take a picture of him hunting, I don't know if it would be so good to take it looking towards you; it would be very, very complicated, and I don't know if it would turn out better, maybe different, but I don't know if better.
no it would definitely be better
Right after a rainstorm, great light
difficult but better lol
insane light you mean x)
Why would this be remotely complicated?
The bird is facing you or it isn’t
You have about half a chance that he is
yes but if it's hunting...
Blurry beaks are the bane of my existence
chonky birb
first photo looks like slightly missed focus
but second one is great
I don't think the first one would have been so great anyway with good focus
yea just funny angle
Sometimes, you have to wait for sideway birb
sharpest bird shot i got from a captive bird
Sometimes they hunt while facing people
holy
At this point, use a macro lens lol
Just a few examples where the bird, having hunted, is not facing away
action shots are so good
wdym by that?
the original image is way larger than this
How do you get that falcon so close? The only ones I see here that aren't falcons but buzzards never get close enough to take a picture and see the details, and my camera is equivalent to 720mm.
can you show the original image?
it's close to that
But how far away were you from the falcon?
it's a dove on his claws ?
idk i cant rlly estimate i forget
yea mourning dove
well rip little dove
But I don't understand what you mean by cropped, I'm new to lens stuff.
weird robin
cropped in post
he edited the photo
Is that a juvenile?
ooohh ok
yeah i call them teenager when the adult plumage got weird like that x)
😭
I'm going to put a feeder for goldfinches and sparrows in my house to see if I can get some good photos.
Raw image is already an incredible shot
That is subject separation I see in my dreams
btw i've never got that excact same weather condition since this shot was take this proof how hard this shot is to get
that's why it's the main piece of my exhibits
Overcast weather is pretty good for that kind of shot
I have a flamingo group photo in my backlog, pretty fun but nowhere near impressive
yeah and flamingo are pretty "hard" to get a good image of them
So, cropping an image means editing it
Especially since their head is 99% of the time hidden...
crop image is to zoom in
editing is changing color, light, crontast, zoom
yeah morning or sunset are the perfect moment to shot them
digital zoom?
Cropping could be called digital zoom yes
But doesn't that reduce the quality?
yeah it does
Sure, but modern sensors can take it
My limit for a crop is 2000p on the long edge, anything wider is fine
modern sensors can handle huge crops now and with a good denoiser like DXO PureRaw you can recover even more detail
The biggest bottleneck for cropping are lenses tbh
yeah
Cropping my 16-300 was... huuuuh... no great
you can have the best camera if the lens is bad you can do nothing
damn i just see i'm 5th, 3rd and 8th on few contests
This was the first bird in flight I ever caught, at the time I was so happy to have it even if it was a 500% crop lmao
holy crop lmao
what a beauty of pixels x)
Pixel art
fr
The week after, I went to Corsica and there were red kites flying meters away from me
Too bad I barely knew what I was doing, so all of my pics are like
kites are so beautiful
Yeah, quite predictable too so fairly easy to track
btw it's not a really bad shot just the quality is missing but still good
there's loads in camargue
i have a whole flock next to my home lmao
i saw 2 in frejus a few days ago but they were too far away to take good pics of

having everything close here is an absolute cheatcode lmao
verdon on wednesday
hope for you to see something

btw i'm saving up to get a thermal monocular for owls
it's a big pricy thing but really useful for prospecting forest and plains
Binoculars are illegal to own in France right?
I swear my airsoft friends told be so
if binoculars are illegal then how ppl watch birds without a camera x)
why tf would they be illegal lol
I think that would be things like thermal ones
maybe in airsoft but in general it's not
in hunt it's illegal to put a thermal visor/monocular on a weapon they need to be hold in hand
and they need to be classified in the A1 category otherwise it's a A2 class wich is millitary grade
Right
And ofc they are also illegal to be used to track ppl movement
Looks like it doubled in volume between the two images
i love when they tuck their heads in
they just look like balls
my fav perched bird pose is when its body is pointing away from u but its head is turned around to look in your direction
here's a couple
I think my fav example is the kingbird
It is
Lightroom just messed everything up when I still used it
Plus Lightroom denoise is stupid
It destroys stars
And the surface of the moon too
dxo is a bit better
for me since im a chronic pixel peeper it's worth it
but for most ppl lightroom does just fine
