Do we know if Sigma is bringing the 500/5.6 to X mount?
not horrible but not the best
there’s no reason for them not to
at some point
might take a few months tho
if they do, it encourages fuji to start doing the same
It would be a major assist for Fooj birders
They did just bring the 100-400 to Fuji X. 👀
smol birbs you kinda need closer to 600, 500 just barely works but i tend to crop a little at 500 anyways. but that’s almost 750 ffeq lmao. im also still not the best wildlife photographer but im learning how to comfortably get close to animals
not having tripod collar out of box is ass tho
the YouTube comments under reviews for the sigma 500 are full of Fuji ppl begging lol
it’s like an extra $150
Yup
not surprised LMAO
we get fuji for small size, and then want big lenses LMAO
Don’t forget their looks…
does Fuji limit teleconverters to first party like Sony does?
beautiful looks
yeah unfortunately
rip
I dunno if it's sharp enough for 40mpx apsc wide open
I watched a lotta reviews and 26mp is cutting it close
still better than the huge Fuji 600mm f8 zoom
Anything is better than the cope tube
Well
It is a neat lens
It’s just bizarre
bigger and slower than a full frame Sony 200-600 lol
I bet it’s better than a Sigma though
Is the Sigma 100-400 (F5-6.3) sharp enough to get quality pics on a apsc-camera with 26 mpx?
It should be fine
Neat - it's about time an affordable 100-400mm lens arrived on the Sony E-mount (and L-mount alliance) systems. Let's hope that one day it finds itself on Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts, too.
Find it here (Amazon affiliate link - be sure to buy the right lens for your camera system!):
https://geni.us/sigma100400dgdn
All pictures taken by me on So...
should stop down to f8
Sounds tempting…
Will have a look at this tonight. Thank you for the link!
have a look at tamron 150-500 OR, get the sigma 150-600 sports and adapt it to fuji
I like everything about the tamron except the price at a quick glance. Edit: don’t trust autocorrect 😳
used prices are pretty good
I read a lot of good things about the tamron.
I initially wanted to get that lens but I found a used sony 200-600 being sold at a good price
Some people find the zoom lock annoying while others find it quite useful. I personally think it may be useful due to the characteristic of the lens. If u max out the zoom to 500mm you would get f6.7, but slightly pull back a bit and you’ll get f6.3
And from the reviews ive read, people utilize the zoom lock feature to lock the zoom at its max distance while maintaining f6.3
And yes the prices are pretty good for a tele. It also has relatively close MFD at the wide end.
Odds are I’ll be getting one. That reach would be very nice to have.
its a good mid ground to the 100-400 and 150-600, about the same price as 100-400, sharpness is almost the same as 100-400 with the extra reach, and smaller than 150-600, only downside is no teleconverter
Is it nice to use handheld or is a tripod required?
depends on how strong you are and what experience you have already with heavy lenses lolol
me personally i can hand hold it up for about 3 minutes on a subject
Experience with heavy lenses are zero. Strong… eh. Average?
I dont think anyone will be able to hand hold for too long at a time
Reasonable. Tripod a gimbal added to the list. One day…
its 5 pounds
- camera and tripod collar, you're looking at about 7 pounds
fuji 150-600 is 3.5 pounds
As a scrawny 18 year old, I can handhold the 200-600 just fine. Usually would start getting tired after continuous shooting for more than 2 hours
So you should be fine with the Tamron
Hooray!
Only lens I would consider not handholding and using a gimbal+tripod or at least a monopod would be those big tele primes
Those are just monstrous
Stabilization on the tamron is so-so if I remember correctly. Its not bad but not great either
Best stabilization is Sigma I think? Im not too sure
The 60-600mm has great stabilization I think
18 years old and getting immaculate photos, must be nice
As you may have noticed. I havent been sharing any birb photos lately. Exams are killing me
More immaculate photos coming up after exam season
Gonna spend my semester break in the forests and mountains where I belong
LMAO
i need to get out more too
uni is tough but im trying to keep my saturdays open to go out
especially since its starting to get warmer, i want to go to a big feeder place
im surprised i found no birds in the winter at this place
i'd expect more since its harder to get food naturally
This is my first sem in uni and honestly its a whole shit show.
I dont know how to live the normal uni life like other people aka be social and participate in organizations or activities and whatnot
felt that one
Excuse my sidekick but I guess I know what uni you are attending (judt assuming from your town) and I think it's normal. It will get better in the higher semesters as I think they make the first semesters extra hard to get rid of people. So look forward!
Wait what howd u know which uni im attending
Oh is it from my Ponttor photo? 💀
That gave it away did it
I know your city from your photos/ Instagram (you had it somewhere obvious, I was. It stalking!) and there are not a lot of unis in our town
Ah yes this!
Loll
This Uni is known for the first hard semesters 😉
Fr one person I met at the start is already gone now
bro gave up
What, these little things?
My brother didnt make it,too. But I believe in you, he was lazy af, and if you work through the first time, it's absolute possible! Just don't make yourself feel bad about it.
It's not you
Nah these things
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement
Wir schaffen es! 💪
Hehe thanks
I visit the zoos around here for the ducks mostly
Theres a bee-eater in Kölner Zoo and lots of ducks
I still need to go to the cologne Zoo with my 400 lens
But I got a decent duck at least
Aachener Tierpark is small af. But they have this nice spot for taking photos of ducks in the lake. I believe these are wild water birds so technically wildlife despite taking photos in a zoo
Dear lord that thing is an actual lens.
Ah yes right, I forgot aboht it! Have been a while that I have been there, since I don't live there anymore (only work).
Best shots were from a park in Herzogenrath
The light there was just wonderful
@wispy mesa just stalked ur ig
The angel shot is very cool
Nice composition and contrast
Thanks!
Oh have you been at gaia yet?
didnt get much from mondays haul (just nothing too crazy around yet) but im happy with the squirrel, want a bit more blur for the ducks lol
spring is soon though, so birds will come back, wont just be ducks and crows
kind of exciting since im in a new place, new birds, i heard there's tanagers, cardinals and warblers of all kinds in spring/summer
Is that the one in the Netherlands?
I havent been there but Ive seen the posters
Yes, in Kerkrade. They have a pygmy hippo ❤️
Like the ducks!
Kinda hard to see you have to zoom into the tree tops. But these were the Eagle fucks on my way home about five minutes ago
There were more even but they were around the corner a smidge or flying
had a stalker following me on my walk, also was trying something new i learned in lightroom
my favorite kind of pigeon, whiteish grey rock pigeon
was trying this thing out, which is kinda cool for small touch ups, wonder if any of you can see where it failed (not the foot), got another photo i worked on ill post later which came out better
here's a blurless photo for comparison, i think its handy for say that branch to the right of the bird, just to blur it a bit more. But yeah, just leaving it to do all the work, it can fail in some spots
what aperture was that robin picture shot at?
These came out nice
I’m surprised a dove is standing ground
Looks like those cartoon scene where they don’t fall till they look downwards
Can you use the denoise feature in Lightroom app?
I guess since I have to stay up and drive to Seattle today to drop the wife off I may as well take the camera and stop at samish flats and see if I can spot anything.
heres the photo which i was happy with, almost impossible to find them in nature
green is coming back now too
Get it
acquire
Find it
I found it
too far for good pics but I tried anyways
I'll see what I can edit when I get home
mega heat distortion so even with a bigger lens it would've been pretty bad
i just love the blue tits in the garden
(i'm mature i'm mature i'm mature i'm MATU-)
i love tits too
It's not my fault that they are called like this in English
it's not just them, there are (blue-footed) boobies too
Haha 😄
I didn't know them yet

That heat wave is crazy
that vid is cropped to like 2000mm lmao
Tried taking pics but theyre completely unrecognisable for some reason so all I got is the vid
dis ones a good one
All the black dots be bald eagles. 🦅
was an airport
sometimes you gotta break the rules for the shot LMAO
Flying to Singapore wednesday, but will have to wait for a clear day to do bird photography
welcome to singapore
@hardy fox shoots birds, and hes singaporean so you can ask him for some locations and stuff
I'm mostly going to do Gardens by the bay
nice
any botanic gardens?
also our weather is like highly variable so better to check on the morning itself
whats milk shed
Definitely Pasir Ris
whoops meant Dairy farm
lol
mixed the name up with a resturaunt I went to in Queenstown NZ
Will probably give Botanic gardens another go
last time all I got was the Blue Throated bee eaters
theres also places like sungei buloh/coney island/lorong halus if youre willing to go further out
or macritchie
or ccnr
or idk theres a lot
you should try macritchie or ccnr
saw alot of wildlife when i went for a hike a month ago
Gonna also check out the new Mandai bird park
Not much for taking pics of birds in capitivity but I want an activity I can share with family
and TBH I'd like to see a Victoria Crowned pigeon
when will you be arriving in singapore?
ill see if im free to join you for a day
id be down if its weekends lol
a stalker what happened?
woah that is amazing i wonder why they are fighting?
ah so kinda like squirrels
a pigeon followed me for 4 minutes
why?
no idea lol
"pigeon"
clearly a government drone
see?
my man c153 broke out of the matrix and figured it out too
though that's the alpha version, the latest one also has a General Electric GAU-8 Avenger 30mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-style autocannon
one time I was at a park and two pigeons kept landing on ppls heads and hanging out. If they got pushed off they'd fly onto someone else's head. You could pet them but they'd peck your hands. It was rly weird but kinda adorable. I didn't know if they were someone's pets or what.
I got some nice selfies with my pigeon homies
my dad
cool
a wood pecker once landed on my head while i was walking (i was wearing a camo hat)
highly effective hat
government drone operator and maintenance?
my local bird park has some event with children rn
they're so loud
this is unacceptable
this is how they do software updates
can you give an example?
left (me) right (children)
@finite flower @hardy fox do you guys have a map pin of where the spotted wood owls are at pasir ris?
Just so I'm not walking in circles when I get there
Also is the local hawker center any good?
Honk
yeah there are many good ones around sg
bedok's one is famous
for bird map you gotta ask chili sauce
I know that, I mean specifically the one I pasir ris that's near the park
Then again, what may be considered average for Singaporeans will likely taste amazing to someone from Perth
i saw them owls here last time
yeah somewhere around there
Ty, will probably see other photographers first which will tell me where they are
?
I think I'm missing context here
probably came to singapore idk
I went last year as a layover on the way to Vietnam
I havent gotten there yet
I'll be close though in 24hrs
nah, cos i remember hearing you coming this year
same park also has hornbills, maybe cross to the right of the river also
alternatively changi beach or jurong lake gardens
jurong lake gardens have ah
wah
never hear
i see in woodlands b4 also
but very very rare
Gap between great and ruined photo is sometimes so so small. Camera should have been positioned this much 🤏 differently.
caught a shiny
the singaporean text come out liao lols, anyway you can join #1205581168364359701

Dang didnt know that existed
its a little dead but
how do you get so close
peanuts
wah got such thing ah
👍👍👍
what lens?
Alright in singapore
welcome!
how long will you be here?
if im free i can join you on a day
i dont have a super tele but would be fun @mint warren
Just over a week
ah thats great
if youre free this saturday
@hardy fox might be free also
i dont do birds but we can chill
maybe
without pre release shutter, how do you time your burst so that you catch the bird as it takes off, especially on smaller birds? trying to reflexively press the shutter as my eye looks at the bird is still much too slow and all the shots are late
start the burst before the bird takes off and just need to delete more pics
too fast to react so u just need to get lucky
@hardy fox @finite flower if you're keen, I'll be up for gardens by the bay soon, depending on morning forecast
I mainly wanna do owls at heritage gardens up in the palms
And kingfishers
im not too free today and tomorrow, but saturday im good
Fair, I'll go tomorrow anyway and still go the next morning or if weather is bad there I might see if it's clearer at pasir ris
Can you hire telephoto lens in Singapore?
yes you can rent them
Apparently there's barn owls in the palms in heritage garden section
Mainly hawkers
Yeah not happening in this current weather
yeah i can join you this saturday
maybe tomorrow if im free
yeah raining atm which is unfortunate
Forecast more promising Saturday anyhow
Damnit I wanna go to parks but the weather is shit
Oh it's not bad now
Gonna scout gardens
goodluck!
yeah saw the weather lol
bound to be another rainy day tmr
I assume like with most bird photography best time would be V early morning
Or is it different in Singapore?
early morning or evening
Enough light at 6am you reckon?
At gardens
I'll prob start at that spot near satay by the bay for kingfishers
Aight so I'll be there around 7
im down
won’t be free unfortunately
Just look for the very Australian looking fat man
PENTAX Q-S1
HD PENTAX-D FA★70-200mm F2.8 (with Adapter Q for K-mount lens)
35mm equivalent focal length: 920mm
@hardy fox @finite flower where do you buy SD cards without getting ripped off?
go funan confirm will not get scammed (totally not upcharged)
go the building beside it
cheaper
tbh online, but you can also go to excelsior or peninsula plaza that area if youre in town
commercially theres also challenger thats overpriced imo
i bought mine online too
challenger always upcharge, best to buy from small shops
challenger and popular is last option
adelphi also not bad, but not many shops sell sd cards, most are for body and lens
if in town, stay around that area, should be able to find
yes
I was told that there were like hundreds of swans near me rn
So I'm crossing my fingers they are still there
And then tonight I'm gonna hopefully go out by the fields to look for owls
trashbagggg
Yeah. Saw someone using a cling wrap

Not brave enough to do that(the mud and water)
Just printed a groundpod(which seems to small), hopefully can start having more wilder birding trips 😂
that's definitely too small
Yeah. Planning on making another one from a broken frying pan.
Good idea
I got some cool swan photos :D
v nice
Enjoy the name while it lasts
I’m sure the AOS will come up with something as pithy and memorable as “cooper’s hawk” when they embark on their great flattening of the bird names
let's visit colombia
taking ppl to the airport early tomorrow morning which means I can visit the far away park I almost never go to but it's gonna be raining 😞
haha
What, if any, photo editing program are you using for wildlife photos? Or in general? I’ve just moved over to shooting raw rather than using Fuji’s jpeg film simulations and am looking for a software.
I’m looking into Pixelmator Pro, Affinity 2 and Photomator at the moment. Does anybody have experience with the either of them?
i use lightroom for ios/android and relens 💀💀💀
I use lightroom classic. And the android version.
fujifilm raw files have pretty intense worms if you pixel peep on lightroom. most people recommend capture one for fuji users for that reason
They used to be worse I don’t recall them being too bad last time I tried LR with them
It has been a year though
I just use lightroom mobile on ipad rn. Looking to upgrade to Lr + Ps on desktop though
Ive tried affinity but couldn’t get used to the workflow
It just felt so dang slow to get anything done
I quite like Affinity Photo 2
I’d like to avoid a subscription service if possible. Will probably give Affintiy a try to start.
capture one is license
Ah.
well both actually
you can choose
but its expensive
depends on how much you're willing to drop
but if you're doing bird photography, you want to invest in some good editing software
Thoughts on this photo? Suggest on editing? What can I do to make this photo better? Exposure comp -1, 1/200, f5.6, iso 125
The lighting isnt ideal imo
Notice how the bird’s body/neck has light on it and the background too
But not the face
You can maybe try evening things out by masking the face
My way of editing would be the usual gradient
Top part linear gradient increase brightness and add some dehaze + warmth for sun effect.
Bottom part another gradient but make it dark for vignette + sometimes i give it a touch of blue to contrast with the top part of the image (warm sunlight vs cold shadows)
went to a new place today and didn't see a whole lot but here's two low res burds
Quick edits on my phone, I'm out for the Sandhill cranes this weekend!
I didn't know Kingfishers regurgitate pellets like owls
Alas I witnessed a Collared kingfisher do just so
Jan Wegener’s masterclass specifically on perches
Tempting
So the first thing to do when out looking for birds, is to find a nice stick
Meh
Is this on YouTube?
Nah you gotta pay for it
I just don't find him that interesting
all his videos are like 50% advertising his classes lol
I like the other content tho
I cant help admire his perfect painterly bird photos though. His colors are super lovely to me
Also the first thing you should be doing when out looking for birds is stopping and shutting the hell up and seeing what their natural behavior is and where they perch. Don't need a 'masterclass' from him
50% that and 50% dumb B-Roll of him taking photos and panning
Obligatory mid video presets advertisement (every photography youtuber ever)
you can get this look with my presets link in description!!
Worst presets ive seen is from froknowsphoto
Some of those presets are just outright cooked
Has anybody read this? Worthwhile or waste of time?
Dave or whatever his name was would cream themselves over anything Jan and Duade. I think most of it was just because they were from his country or something.
Sure if it's free. You can probably find all of those and more in random videos from just about anyone.
Wow! Owls are so cool and amazing creatures. Tuesday evening I went out to check if I could hear some owls. I didn't have that much of a high hopes so I left my camera home. And of course I saw a northern pygmy-owl. It is funny how you see all kinds of random things when camera is not nearby. 😅
Slowly starting to work through the pictures I took on holiday in singapore
expect lots more
What lens did you end up using?
Same 150-600 Sigma I use most of the time
Which body?
R7
how does it handle, im looking for a new tele and its one of my potential option
Theres a well known compatibility issue with the eye tracking autofocus on the R7
can be circumvented with some settings but its still there
Havent gone out in a while now so im just processing past photos
Weather has been real shite too, its either overcast or raining
cute plover
He got a quest for you
pigeon pair billing/kissing
Beautiful
the common mynah, the most annoying and territorial bird to most asians
why are birds so smaaaaall.
That blue is so cool
These birds are so amazing! And photo is excellent! 👌
Today at the Ranch, I photographed a once in a lifetime shot. In this top photo, if you look in the bottom right corner, you will see a bobcat that is about to attack a blue heron. In the bottom photo you can see the bobcat attacking the blue heron.

mmmmm chicken
First close up bird photo, I’m so happy rn 😂
is it against the rules of dignity of birds to shoot their butt?
More edits
Feels so nice to finally be out for bird photography again
Also reminded of how hard bird photography is
2.5 hours outside and like 10 usable pics
But it could also be due to being not early enough (birds no longer very active)
What time do you guys usually go out for birds?
Love the colors
Depends on a few things
Some areas I like to go wont have good lighting if I go too early
Also if its too cool that morning, birds dont want to come out
and in other places, its only viable if you're there at sunrise
I see
Got a shot of a Eurasian Siskin today
I like the composition/perch but I couldn’t get close enough so I end up with this low res noisy mess
Im not sure if cropping any tighter would be a good idea
background is nice enough for a wide crop
late morning or early afternoon typically but that's just the only times i'm not busy most days
I either go after work at like 6:00 p.m. but usually I'm going on the weekend after I finish waking up witch is like 1:00 p.m.
I don't need that fancy golden hour lighting. An hour's not enough time to take pictures.
I know it looks like shit but its my first BIF/takeoff photo so I tried my hardest to rescue it in post

These photos are hilariously low res
4 MP
I'm in the Washington DC airport there's birds indoors
I doubt they want birds to be indoors
Someone’s gonna get shit on
Softness with your distinct style of editing gives it nice dreamy look. I like it. 👍
Speaking of editing. Is anyone interested in editing this photo and then sharing and comparing the results?
Sure that would be fun!
Then go ahead.
sure ima try it
Should we reveal the results tomorrow around this time, if someone else also wants to make their own version?
im not gonna be available tomorrow so im gonna send it to you when im done
btw i love your work man
I can give it a go tonight
of course 👍
Will be fun to mess with a Z9 file
Sorry to disappoint but this was taken with dx crop mode. If this editing thing is a hit and we continue to do this i promise that I will provide full frame file next time.
DX. How dare you
Actually I use it quite a lot. This is just my experience and not sure is it true. But it feels like autofocus works better for far or small subjects when using crop mode. Memory card and hard disk space save is also one thing why I use it. 🤓
this is why Nikon needs a stacked 26mp apsc cam
Yeah mirrorless successor for D500 with high frame rate and z9 like autofocus would be great addition to Nikon lineup.
that would be so hot
No that’s a valid thing
I have a function button just for dx/fx toggle
Just get a z8 and run it in crop mode all the time then 🙃
not enough pickles
Slightly softer Vignette/Gradient
Nice kind of spot light effect. Works well to this photo. I like it. 👍
Great colors and crop works well. Solid work. 👌
Thanks! I don’t think I touched color much at all, mostly dropped highlights/whites
What species of bird? He’s quite cute
When I looked original one I didn't like the greens and blues but now that I look your version they look good. 😅
Looking back they do feel a little dark in the greens
Yours are more lively, like how spring should feel
Well those are spruces on the bc so they tend to be darker green. So your version is more real life like.
Do you only have evergreens around, or are there aspens too?
For some reason aspens seem to like living with pines around here
Yeah we have broad leaf trees (such as: Birch, European aspen and Alder etc.) but they are leafless now. New leafs starts to appear at May and they drop off at around October. But most of the forests here consist of pines and spruces (something like 80%).
My home towns name (Leppävirta) would be in English something like Alder Stream. 😅
I'm quite sure that those are snow buntings or pulmunen in Finnish. 👍
Those are migrating birds and their breeding area is way up north. So at central or southern Finland you can see those only when they are going to north in spring time or to south at autumn.
@green meadow just finished editing the photo
its such a good photo, so much fun to edit
So sorry if i ruined it though
Im in my bright vibrant backgrounds era (jan wegener inspo)
Definitely not ruined. I was really curious what you do to it. And it looks like your photos. Even thou you might be takin inspiration from others still your style is recognisable. And that is something... great. I think that I don't have that skill all of my photos looks somewhat different from each other. It would be great if someone could tell that it is my photo without knowing it.
Just noticed that missed masking spot between the bird’s leg and branch
Need to fix
Thank you so very much for your kind words
I am honestly not aware of my style at all and often feel like a fraud, just copying some other artist. But I’m glad to know that I have somehow developed a style
At this point I have like 0 structure in my editing workflow and just keep tinkering with things until I get it to look just the way I want it to look
And as I believe some people have mentioned regarding Jan’s photos: it looks like a “painting”
Thats pretty much what I try to recreate
Yeah my process is somewhat the same. Usually I don't have any plan for what the outcome will look like. 😅
Your photos are always amazing btw. Top notch quality, amazing composition and your BIF shots are definitely something I aspire to be able to capture!
Thank you so much. I'm really happy to hear that. I think that I have learned something but still not even nearly ready. I'm still eager to learn more. Sometimes it feels like progress has stopped, but hopefully it has just slowed down a bit.
Now how about you guys try editing my photo XD
It might be more of a challenge due to the bird being smaller in the frame (working with less resolution), more noise, and a messier background
Yeah, I will definitely give it a go.
And by the way everyone did a great job with my photo. Quite similar but still some differences. Nice to notice how everyone sees things a bit differently. 👍😄
This kind of thing is fun to try now and then
Nice! I like the wide composition
Thx
Would anyone be interested in editing a raw from a 14yo camera?
if so here it is
It doesn’t have crazy resolution and the noise is fairly good
I think discord compressed the file
Original file is 49.2 MB
Idk how that affects editing but hopefully it doesnt decrease the dynamic range too much
Just felt like there wasn’t a lot of resolution for my part
At least all metadata is lost from your file.
Yeah same
First one is bit more basic and second one is something else. 😅
Uuh, red cardinal is so red 😵 😄
I know right
Love the 2nd one
Did you use any sharpening software btw?
It looks sharper/more crisp than the original file
I’m not very good at editing yet
Motion blur is the issue here
How the fuck am I supposed to go even lower then 1/2000
this is at iso 800, 1/2000, f8, in pure daylight btw
Odd
The beak and foot seem like there’s motion blur, but the feathers don’t necessarily
No idea 🤷♂️ I’m using t7 with a sigma 150-600
Why do you need such high shutter speeds for a still image though?
Maybe try using a tripod + gimbal and practice handholding?
I generally photograph at 1/800, going as low as 1/400 when light isnt good, and going up to 1/1250 when theres plenty of light
Just a while ago I saw an owl photo taken at 1/50 at 600mm (on tripod)
I don’t have a big tripod, nor gimbal, and it wouldn’t even work anyways because I go on long walks
1/2000 should most certainly be enough…
Most definitely. 1/500 is enough to handhold at 600mm for me albeit risking some motion blur in case the bird moves or wind
no idea
people have told me the sigma isnt very sharp
maybe thats why?
You could run some tests at home using an object
Preferably something with texture
If the image of the still object is sharp then its probably not an issue with sharpness
its really not
ive took pictures of trees and whatnot and they werent really sharp either
With a tripod/no shake, low iso, no heat haze, etc? Basically under ideal conditions
When I started bird photography I also often got slightly unsharp photos but I figured it was from slight shake when handholding. When I tested the lens indoors, on a tripod, ideal light, low iso, sharpness was fine
its not possible for me to have low iso
i HAVE to be at f8 to have a sharp photo
period
also i dont have a tripod like i already said. i assumed handheld would be fine if i went to fuckin 1/2000
You can also just setup the camera on the floor. Anything that ensures no shake basically
Then use as low a shutter speed as necessary to get low iso
its not possible for me to use a low shutter when actually taking the photos cuz motion blur
so theres literally no point, i just have to buy a tripod
which will be awhile
No i mean for the testing
To test if its an issue with the sharpness or motion blur
its obviously motion blur, you can tell here
but sigma also isnt the sharpest lens ive been told
ill test it but itll have to be high iso
i dont even have anywhere flat lmfao
i cant do it indoors and outside everything is kinda hilly
But then again it is odd that theres motion blur in a still photo at 1/2000
So I think its worth testing
maybe i just have really shaky hands idk
but t7 + sigma 150-600 is a nightmare in itself.
i have to use iso 1600 in the morning time yet theres still motion blur or smth
Yeah I run it through Topaz DeNoise. Maybe I over sharpened it bit. 🤔
Beautiful bird and great photo to edit. 😃
anyone knows what bird this is
I have no idea. Too exotic for me. 😅 Where did you see it?
It might even be a young bird, so that also makes identification more difficult.
singapore
might be migratory idk
actually it might just be like a baby one of those green pigeons looking again
theres just like not a lot photos online to compare
no nevermind probably is
pink necked or smth
never seen the baby version before
Yeah young ones often gives quite a puzzle when trying to recognize them.
Thank you, I like the crop and how the Colors stay true to life
Here is mine
I'm a big fan of landscape orientation even thou I use portrait orientation quite a lot. For me most pictures work better in landscape orientation. So does this. On thing that I would probably change is that I would leave bit more room behind the bird. 🤔
Although there is indeed not a lot of space behind it, extending the crop reveals the brown female in the background which is in my opinion a distraction.
Hey @drifting silo @scarlet tulip, does this image have motion blur?
It’s not a good photo but just curious if it’s sharper then the other one or not
Looks like the same issue
Feather looks sharp on top
But other parts of the image looks a bit blurred
Idk what the issue is here since im not a expert on lenses
I’ve been told the sigma is only sharp in the center when using a apsc camera, maybe that’s why?
my sigma never looked that bad
I think that is can be fixed quite well by dropping saturation with some local adjustments. 👍
Maybe something like this.
Nope
Are you using some kind of protective filter?
Nope, 0 filters actually
Is this image sharp?: #🦀・creatures message
It has ca which I will fix later
And photos that you get are constantly soft?
Apparently 🤷♂️
I think that it is not super sharp when closely looking outlines of that bird.
Surely it doesn’t matter that much for a silo?
@wise trench have you tried to shoot a test chart or a road sign or something?
Do it off a rest so you know the camera is steady, and do it with any without optical stabilization
it does work well indeed
Someone might think that it is cheating, but personally I think it is OK to clean image bit like that or with generative fill in photoshop.
It’s great for removing branches and such
I’ll try it when I get home and send the results here.
Cool
I almost wonder if there’s a decentered lens element
If this issue is in all the photos
it might also be the image stabilization, sigma isn't know for being the most steady
At 1/2000 that shouldn’t be a factor
I don’t think it is
Or if it is, it’s varied
Make it go away!
crappy scaup shot
16:9 has been working very well today. Or maybe its just my eyes getting bored of 3:2 or 4:3
Im used to editing with vibrant colors so this is a new one for me, had a hard time editing it tbh
Im trying to make the whites “pure”
But that turned out to be far more difficult than my initial expectations
frog is not having a good day
Looks good. I like these kind of "high key" photos. and yeah, it is really hard to get so that whites are white and other parts are not too bright.
great photo 👍
Hey @drifting silo or @scarlet tulip do you mind me sending yall test shots where the photo was still? They are raw files so I don’t think I should send here
There’s also too many, it would flood this channel
u can post em here they don't embed so it doesn't rly spam
taken from very close up.
Taken from a very close distance. (ChatGPT4 suggest)
he shall be found guilty of trespassing
found an excellent osprey spot
today I heard a bird and Merlin said it was an osprey but it was a blue jay pretending to be one
jays are assholes like that
Jays and mockingbirds
so many coots (they're not good pictures but i'm showing y'all anyway lol)
Second photo is tripping me out
saw a flock of literal hundreds of buffleheads too (lifer for me, was very cool)
The horizon is very slanted but the birds are in a straight line
lol that is confusing
Adjust the horizon to be straight and the birds become slanted
i think the lake isn't on an even surface
Because of gravity, the lake can’t be slanted, so it’s your horizon’s fault and not the lake itself
No way I just read that
My thing or his?
His lol
Oh ok
Yes
The ducks are swimming at an angle causing that effect
But sometimes the human eye wants to see what it wants to see if u get what i mean. So we compose for the subject and not the horizon/background
If a bird is perched and not level to the horizon i would probably compose for the bird, leveling the image so that the bird appears level
You should clean your sensor lol
Yesterday I got this amazing super close up photo of white-tailed eagle. 😅
not all photos come out perfect, this is my only of the cardinal and it was like 25k iso lol
some day ill find one again
either way, memorable as a cool find a year later
Not even nearly all photos are perfect and memories are as important or even more important than photos. In nature you often have experiences that pictures cannot convey.
thank you i was wondering what was causing that lol
bluebird
That looks very clean for 25k
wow I can almost see the the molecules
Woa
I definitely have not figured out how I like to edit birds yet
not a great pic but a new lifer
These all with the 400?
I might need one lol
get a 600 🔫
Very nice
If I get one I’ll be finding a 2x TC as well
800/9 is acceptable and it’ll still focus faster than an F lens
Idk i'm starting to think I shoulda just got a 2.8 used
I guess for birds the weight of the 4.5 is better, but for sports 4.5 isnt quite enough for night games (maybe if it there was better lighting, havent tried yet)
Are 2.8 even around the same price used?
The old ones can be
whenever i think i am somewhat happy with a picture you come with a fancy bird 😉
Blue tits are really nice birds to photograph and you did well. Crop is good. A nice and interesting branch and great out of focus bc. Bird it self is singing which adds kind of action to the photo. Areas that might need some improvement: 1. head is not in focus and sharp. 2. Some highlights on the head are too bright. But this is a good photo and keep on trying and practicing. 👍
Thanks for the feedback! That helps a lot! I already tried to lower the highlights in the head, I will try more. Head not in focus I did not realize in fact when editing, I will see if one of the other photos I shot next to it are better in that remark. Thanks again!
We have a lot of blue tits here, so I guess I will also get a lot more chances to practice over the year 😉
XD dont worry I struggle finding anything other than Robins and Blue/Great Tits as well
I was editing a photo earlier and lost the mood cuz lightroom decided to mess up the sync and the edit just disappeared so the whole thing got reset
made a few changes to the edit, I wasnt happy with it
Did I cook or is the photo cooked?
Very grainy and soft because this is very cropped. Couldnt get close enough to any bird last time
its a little cooked but we're just here for the birbs
Which part is cooked if you dont mind me asking? So I can improve
I feel like im making a lot of bad decisions in editing lately
Ah ok
it could be a lot more cooked

I used to cook photos for fun when im bored

I failed to replicate the shade of orange in my (fav) piccies
Beautiful image, my only bummer is that the branch in bottom right could be removed and i prefer the orange personally
@drifting silo
i think i can remove it
i guess it really is subjective
yeah
for me its the opposite 😅 but yeah its subjective
@drifting silo @dark minnow I’m Team Orange. The green one looks more like a painting to me. 🤗
Then green it is! Since u said it looks like a painting thats a complement to me
Green might be more life like, but stick in the bc is kind of too green. That orange like bc matches better to robins colors but then greens on the branch bothers me tiny bit. I can't decide both are good. 👍
I fixed up that oversaturated branch on the right
But yeah I cooked the greens lol
Im gonna have to dial back on that saturation
Thought did cross my mind as I typed it. Ha!
I don't really know how good these are on a more objective view so if anyone could help me figure out how I could've shot these better I'd really appreciate that 🙃😁
For the BIF shot, generally having the bird looking towards your direction is preferable, I also think the background is underexposed but that may be your style
That first bird confused me I thought the back was the front
The robin photo, the colors are cooked on that one, it should be orange but this is almost red imo
Underexposed too
Focus point seems to be on the feather near its wing instead of the eyes
Unless this isnt a robin and just some birb ive never seen before
Idk phone said it was european robin
Ok then yeah definitely not red, orange
Idk what bird it is, I took it ages ago on an old camera and only just got around to seeing the photo and since I never do bird photography really (as you can tell) I thought I'd see just how badly I did
I trust my phone it said it was a robin
With the area I live in I'm like 98% sure it is too
the phone video looked reasonable but the photos at the same zoom were extremely terrible lol
better off taking a screenshot of the video
skip most of the processing
red bellied woodpecker was NOT having it with this starling
“My house! Fuck you! Mine!”
literally
watched em chase eachother a bit before this too, dude was not happy
I love pics of birds yelling at each other
Sick
Little European Robin. I tried to keep the denoise fairly low, because I have the feeling that it might destroy too much of the details else. Still I am unsure if i not just missed fokus again on the eyes and face and instead fokused on the feathers at the breast. I don't know how to improve that, I have already the fokus tracking on the eyes 😢
it’s always hard to tell cause most birds faces don’t have sharp feathers like the breast lol
That's certainly good to hear 😄
Looks like u nailed the focus to me. I usually look at the feathers around the eyes/head area to quickly evaluate the focus point
Like this area
Thanks!
apparently there's some cormorants in MI
at Lake Saint Clair Metropark tho that's far
i lov bird (>_<)
burd
nice burd
Cormorant
Sea chicken
The only king fisher I’ll ever get
Blooj
where bird
it's here
Still don’t see it
I think that male eiders looks like Star Wars stormtroopers. 😅
Photo is not that good. I was quite far away and could not get any lower point.
matcha flavored
King Eider is even more unique looking water bird. It would be really cool to see and photograph those.
Last weekend I went to the west coast of Finland to see some migrating birds. I ended up relatively close to this white tailed eagle. Unfortunately there was not enough light and I was prepared to take some shots of the sitting bird with the 600mm and tc. Then it started to fly around and do all kinds of neat tricks. So I ended up shooting flying bird with 1/3200s shutter speed at f9 and with ISO25600. Then you come home and try all kinds of noise reducing tricks for several hours and cry because all of those photos are beyond rescuing. 😭 😅
Still looks awesome for instagram/viewing on phone. Great shot
cool bird
Still looks awesome great shot
Most people don’t care about pixel peeping like us lmao
Im gonna go out to practice BIF this week, you guys got any tips?
Ive set my a7iii to having a custom button i can easily access to immediately switch to wide AF area
Which I hope would improve my hit rate for BIF
So I have the AF area on small most of the time, but can switch to wide for BIF
Is that a good idea?
Oh yes I know the feeling. Last weekend I saw a magnificent cormorant drying it's wings in the wind but the one set of pictures is against the sun (so he is totally dark and did not think about any exposure correction or different metering) and the ones from the other angle are just ALL unsharp? I don't know what happened. Skill issue so much 😭
These do come out nice on a smaller screen
Sometimes that’s just the way it be
pretty sure it is yes, i usually have to do 3 steps, click button, scroll to wide, click back
Yeah i figured that would be too much of a hassle so I configured the AE button to immediately switch to wide af cuz its right next to the af-on and hence easily accessible

Previously i had it set to manual focus hold in case the af is struggling but i rarely ever need to switch to mf
i used one point af on my camera
i find its more redundant
im gonna try using zone af though
"Artistic" and not so artistic photo of skylarks song flight.
Both are just a bit soft due to heavy crop.
i wonder how this will look in a 1:1 or something
Good example how bad weather is a opportunity to get great photos. 👍
This was taken handheld with 600mm pf and 1,4x tc attached. So it is 840mm, f9, iso2500 AND SHUTTER SPEED 1/40s. I think it is safe to say that VR works well. Of course not even nearly all of the frames that I took were sharp, but this wasn't the only one.
That’s a fat little bird, very nice 👍
It is a goldcrest.
Smallest bird in Finland and also in Europe (if I remember correctly).
No hummingbirds there?
Swon
Nope, those are exclusively your delights there in North and South America.
Interesting, I’d always thought they lived globally
How common those are there where you live? Do you see them daily, just summer times, or rarely during migration?
Very area dependent
Growing up in the southern Rocky Mountains id see them all summer
Here on the east coast they migrate through and some stay
Some of the species will make a very audible humming noise as they fly in spring, but as the summer goes on the feathers that hum wear down and the birds go silent
A brief look at an adult male Broad-tailed Hummingbird. The distinct wing sound can be heard as it leaves the feeder
Such a small and kind of mysterious creatures. 👌😃
You can hear the trilling as he flies away here
Yeah it was clearly audible. 😲
Actually got some stuff on a shitty day
Man the Collared Sparrowhawk vs Brown Goshawk thing is super confusing
they look so damn similar
The sun came out for a few minutes and the light was beautiful. And then it hid behind the clouds the rest of the day
First time getting a proper angle on duck photos. The background is buttery smooth
That did come out nice
that’s a really pretty shot
Water colors are so nice
