#Monochrome (B&W Cult)
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
wont argue there. id rather get a Leica version designed from the ground up to be such. The Q2 being an easy choice considering its an AIO system.
but its pricey
I would love a monochrome Leica eventually
That’s on my “I either win the lottery or start making bank from this hobby” list
i fear me getting into leica film is only a gateway to leica digital
plays taps to his bank account
i will have a monochrome leica eventually
If I didn’t have kids I’d already own one
school costs 4 leicas a year
Yeeeee unfortunately
why do you want a Leica? you already have the best one
she wont live forever
but it's not monochrome

so like 2-8 years more
statistically around 5
some will bless you with le 20 years of purr
yes plz
My cat Spriggan is pushing 10 years soon
We’re not sure how much longer she has
She’s got some form of dwarfism
leica hasnt really shown any sign of slowing down in the last 3 ish years
And our other cat has recently started bullying her, so we have to keep them separated as much as we can
He’s like 3 times her weight, she’s under 5lbs and he’s pushing 15lbs
;-; poor kitti
😦
@mellow ledge I actually thinkj I prefer 24mp scanning
image sharper everywhere, no micro jitter, looks very clean
interesting
well zooming in is missed a bit, also when checking the live view but it's alright
process feels easier
process being easier is 90% of the battle
like if you really really want to invest into an image you can always stitch it from two or more shots
oh yeah for 645 definitely an option
don't feel like 35mm needs more than 1:1 at 24mp
depends a bit on the film but yea, I scan with the RP which is 26mp so pretty much the same
most of my film is like...
pushed to shit because I like that crunchy grain vibes so that's definitely not worth much more than 24 haha
shall we shoot tmax at 1600 iso in broad daylight?
yes
we shall and we will and we have
and
we'll do it again
I should send you a roll for CMS 20 II just for giggles
I think my first use of the 50R is going to be evening city walk at 12k iso
or 24
just going to look for the machine's limits
perfect in winter
ja
first post 😀
Am I crazy or is that not straight?
It's a cool shot, but something is nagging me about it.
vertical is on angle
yup I see it. how the hell did I not see it? lol
not sure how I didnt see that
LOL the horizontal has slight deviations but that can be due to the center.
I took lots of design courses, you learn to spot that stuff quick sometimes.
because you see the picture you intended to take 😄 not the picture you ended taking, happens to everyone
Long live hp5
✊
Architectural abstraction
I like the astractness 😄
BW Cult, #📼・analogue-haven and #1043255077789499453 cowlaboration
shot with the pentax 6x7 on 135 film and a 45mm lens
Nice pic
lots of lines
I wish I could afford InstaX Monochrome more often, it’s a joy to shoot
Gosh I also want the InstaX Square, it’s gorgeous looking, and I love 1:1
mist mist mist mist
coming back to 3x2 after so much 65x24, the 3x2 feels like a square
Not too happy with this as burnout came soon after but it is B&W soooo
I promise I'll get better at this style soon enough lol
OK i wanna Q
645??
that kind of dense leavwork is generally super tough to protray in b/w as the colour that usually allows the eye to differentiate them is just gone and turms them in one big hectic texture
thank you Heinz, very cool
works so well in b/w!
The baby shower was so fun to shoot, and I was so excited when the mom-to-be said she wanted B/W

she clearly has the best taste!
very based client
Scan from the ektar 35h a shitty little plastic half frame cam, usually would crop into separate images but I like the contrast of the two images
Half frame cameras are great for making diptychs
id crop the already half cropped man
but I like it
I like the lack of contrast
it's very raw
very BBNG 3
I have no idea how I captured this
this isn't edited btw
high contrast monochrome. that's it
your shutter speed probably dumped sensor info in a way where the lights blinked off and back on mid shutter due to light frequency
shot on a phone I suspect?
idk much lol
I just went to the settings and selected high contrast monochrome
everything just became very saturated B&W
I liked it idk
I did put it in lightroom, but I barely changed anything because even small changes made me not like it
might be that you're saving to jpeg but the ghosting is sure odd
noise schmoise monochrome always tones the noise down a bit. color noise on the other hand…
This would be my first attempt at photographing wildlife, I don't think it went badly except the lighting was bad so I had to use the flash and find a way to dilute the light a little bit
Id you shot raw there plenty of options in post
What would be a good free photo editing software for raw?
First time editing B&W - How'd I do (Taken a while ago)
I like it, but I feel like there's a lot going on and I don't know what to look at
darktable (gpl) or darkroom if on mobile
i like lightroom but it comes with a price. darkroom is my fallback
I just tried editing on Darktable a couple hours ago, it's a bit confusing but I'll learn, thanks for the recommendation
i find it amusing that most all my editing is done on ipad
there wasn't much color so why not monochrome
perfect in mono
I think this is the most active thread in the forum 😄 well done b/w cult!
we are the cult we are ALL
I like this more in B&W than color
It still looks acceptable but I’m sure in color it’d be very nasty
I meant to take it in black and white
even tho in color properly exposed that lantern lit batch of flowers looks nice
I should've underexposed it
but I was intentionally pushing iso
stopping my 1.4 lens to 5.6 to embrace the noise
here it is properly exposed at 2.8, tho my hands a little shaky at 1/5
a little over exposed
i should do some on my D700. it renders gorgeous noise. closest to film grain ive ever seen from a sensor!
not super high iso though but gorgeous still
shots like this may deserve their own forum. love architectural abstraction!
Why thank you
I Love this kind of motives but please center and strighten it 😭
Ye alr, will send it again once it's done
Yay!
very nice!
I need to get gud tho
Made one of my color photographs monochrome and I think it turned out better than the color version
monochrome is better 70% of the time
@mellow ledge which one do you like more?
also what do you think of the border
im figuring out how to develop a simple way to adaptively choose border colors
Honestly, neither the foliage is too busy for my taste
very black and very white!
Heinz' just run out of positive things to say
😂
the way this evening editing session has turned deserve a change of pseudo
one of the cool characteristics b/w has is that you can barely tell of those pictures were taken yesterday or 50 years ago
exactly, imo it makes everything almost timeless
half person on the right edge is meh. Duck, you're better then this, you know to check your borders
is test shot
test failed
get the half person out or in, and it passes
this is the b/w cult, we don't do half arsed 😂
or go post it to the plane people's thread, they'll not care about half people
Samsung moment
there you go, passed!
it's really good at removing shit
that the new 70-200?
nice 👍
what I shot is in the background
70-200 is a lovely focal length
Where monochrome
the lens is monochrome except for the ring and focus thing
The BG??
nice contrast around the kitten
I get better at spotting this 🙂 The green of the foliage and the brown of the cat were not so interesting but I felt there was potential in the image. So let's go for bw magic
ja "seeing" b/w is a skill that is learnt
What was a holiday shot turned into an unlikely self Portrait
I feel like with the picture being black and white I don't really know what to look at
agree, you need some effort to understand what you see here in bw. I'd be curious to see a colour version.
It was hard subject matter. Ran into same issue with the color version. I’ll post for reference. Decided to focus on the texture and the reflection in the glass balls.
For reference
It's neat but I feel like it's a bit too messy when it's colored idk just me ig
i agree, it was really hard to get a clean shot. the were long exposures, there is a lot of reflected light everywhere. So i opted for monochrome.
monochrome simplifies everything
it's cool
thanks
the color version does a better job at splitting objects in the image but the big red spot in the middle catches attention on an unintersting part of the background. So it's hard to chose but I like the shot.
color is an art unto itself. just like monochrome. two different ways of viewing the world, neither better or worse than the other, just with their own special nuances.
agree 100% thats where the art comes in. knowing which shots will work and which wont.
i am very picky with color. unless i know what and where im shooting i will not default to color.
Nice that is some crazy DoF! Which lens did you use?
Older Nikkor 180 f2.8, manual glass
The gulls here are tame, you can get within 6m or so and they don’t care
we can fill a parking lot with with gull with one bag of popcorn or 3 french fries! nice choice glass!
If you’ve ever seen Finding Nemo, that’s about how the gulls act here
Glass has been great- it’s the telephoto I default to for non-specialized stuff
oh -- i love the contrast here
my fave glass right now is nikon and voigtlander, my 80-200 2.8 is amazing.
The AF?
something something lack of color
some say the f6 is the ultimate AF 35mm. made until 2018 no less!
you may want to call it a “working mans camera”. its designed for one thing getting the image period. The F5 and F6 have neet tricks you dont see a lot on digital.
I think my dad kept on film through the F3, then went digital
Would’ve been fun to have seen the later bodies, never had a chance though
At least, not when I was growing up
yeah
i get tempted by the F3 or the FM but think i bought my last 35mm with my M4
so i have 1 fully manual slr (FTb) 1 auto focus slr (F4) and 1 pro rangefinder (M4)
everything else are shelf pieces
Nice pic but be careful to be visible when taking this kind of shots.
Ja i know the road was shut down for filming 😂 if you look close you can see the center of the road being blocked by a lift
cross post from the 65x24 club 😄
i like the tonal range, green filter??? the composition feels cut off thought. i do like it as whole though.
had to save this under exposure in lightroom. 120 Delta 3200 with mamiyaflex automat a.
Thank you, and it was no filter, although the leaf was a greenish yellow so that could make a difference, and I will try re-editing the photo with a more open composition, thank you for your critique
Testing the macro capabilities of my new phone 🙂
African violet? Love the detail.
EXTERMINATE!
and exterminate she did!!!
💯
all hand made too. cosplayers are such fun.
I belive it
Thank you! It’s a succulent, Crassulaceae family
I love Dalek cosplayers, they’re always so unique, despite cosplaying the same thing
yeah, i do a Who Con every year in chicago and always amazed at the talent for such a small show.
There also needs to be What Con, Where Con, and Why Con
The Who con is obvious a Grinch convention
Here is the leaf picture re-edited, with a bit more of an open composition
i like this , feels more complete. my opinion obviously LOL
Chicago TARDIS LOL
Alright, thank you for the composition advice
no problem
true
God damn 👀
@mellow ledge you heard of tasma mikrat 300?
cheap $3 a roll russian film
ive just stumbled upon the motherload
every Russian film ever
they've also got the Fuji Eternal b&w and Kodak 2302
Fuji eternal?
I've heard of eterna not eternal
eterna, yeah
Playing with my scanner, please forgive my dust. This is Fomopan 200 pushed to 400 out of my Walzflex.
very nice

hey gang
what's the deal with B&W brand filters
low reflection filters, what's the deal with those for B&W
do you mean the B+W brand? they have nothing to do with B&W (as in black and white) it's a german optics manufacturer brand
sometimes you get such honesty from a subject. saved from the bland gray of under exposure. Taken on delta 3200 120
mist snow and nice light, lovely combination
;-; i wish i had seen it in here first
love it, got out to shoot in the same condition this morning but haven't taken a look at the images yet 🙂
Tried experimenting around a bit and I don't think it the pictures are half bad
very Ansel of you! love it.
i like this what lens did you use?
Sigma 150-500, f/5-6.3
Very nice
Same Bird Different Photo, I think this ones better
This is a dumb picture, but I like that I accidentally got a plane in it.
This I do actually like, it's only ruined by the fact that I took it on Fomopan 200. The worst Fomo.
Ye I agree, I like the second one much more and first one just feels cramped
top
Top
reposting here from #🏭・human-made
does this (almost) monochrome picture qualify?
not quite gray
Monochrome isn't necessarily Gray and tones of such
It's just there's one color
🐑
he's just like the emoji
ja Chevelu went out emoji shooting 😄
but jokes aside, I like the shot, tones, contrast, sharpness
that's an old sleeping raw that I realize I can turn it into bw.
imagine shooting color
agreed
contrast is fun with black and white
since you have no color contrast
high contrast is usable
Yeah I know
F-35 & F-135
bw cult? count me in
coffee
love this one
very nice pic, it makes me want some so I go take a coffee ☕
it looks almost like a render 😄
love the edit style here. some people are afraid to clip the blacks that hard
Not big homie sal. Never scared
why would they be? lol
i like the one with ppl in more becuase the duck on the guys back
but i had that with no ppl too
Merry bw Xmas ! ❄️
Just found out about this place, might as well share a photo I took last Christmas in Kenya. Unfortunately no snow 😦
Welcome to the cult !
Thank you!
the more cultists the better!
Neat!
so me reason i really like this shot
btw will this one be more fit in #🏭・human-made or #🌳・nature
what is the main subject?
idk it's just a landscape
would say the plane then the city tho it's too dark soo ye
nature
alright
feedback greatly appreciated
bit more experimental 🧐
I love it, has a history book vibe 👍
Thank you!
I think that could work really well in wide!
I will try some stuff 👌
hello fellow monochrome cultists
and now for something completely different
...it's the best.
you can shoot fireworks in b/w and it looks gorgeous 😄
nice!
Oh I really like that a lot!
Oh thank you! Aside from the crop it’s SOOC
I’ll give all the credit to https://fujixweekly.com/2021/08/25/fujifilm-x100v-x-trans-iii-x-trans-iv-film-simulation-recipe-monochrome-negative/
How did I do?
M4?
Leica M4? lol i think i misinterpreted your nick lol
oh Micro 4/3! im silly
they owe a third of Leica M4 😄 Together with their Siblings Georgina and Gustaf
lol
The daughter is Portia
@mellow ledge is this one better? or the second one has too much negative space
it's in the middle
right now it's like the 35mm
too wide to be personal, too tight to be encapsulating
personally I'd want more negative space OR less negative space
I'd be fine with this
i do like the second pic i send the one with more negative space but do you think the sky is a bit too bright? (becuase i want the more negative space)
this comp is nice!
and how about this pic?
yes
this should would be cool if you removed the pole
and the lettering on the left
the sky looks very chrome, which I like in a way
i'd figure the centering and the balance of the left and the right and the bottom horizon out
also this picture is way way artifically sharpened
very phone sharp
phone photography moment
i don't really know what to do about the sharpening
so i just leave it as is
i will re-visit this spot later on
since I'm late to the party I just say I'd agree with @frigid oasis the central crop is nice, the issue is less the negative space but the two things reaching into it (lamp and tower) ant ecentral crop fixes it 😄
pretty much

nice
very wide
leave one pixel vortical
liked this, edited to monochrome in lightroom
it sure has a style to it looks almost like shot with a blue filter
you mean a physical lens filter?
it looks like it at least, but since you shoot digital I suspect it's applied after the fact. I suspect it's red brick building which is fairly dark and a ky which is fairly light => that suggests a blue filter
the original building is indeed red bricked at the bottom and a green metal at the top
i didnt use a physical filter tho
might just look that way with the edit
ja probably darked the reds and brightened the blues 😄
tbh i just turned saturation to zero and messed a little with the tone curves and the exposure/higlights/darks etc
didnt mess with individual colors

originally i was actually planning to but i liked it that way, will go back and mess around with them tho, see what i can do
I guess I've gotta agree with that guy too, good takes
Bit late on the theme just procrastinated on this photo
hunting for rare trees in the Bornean forests
nice 🙂
thank you!
did you find some ?
I actually have loads from quite a few trips out (of photos)
yeah some, but not those that I was looking for
going to have to return back there in a few months
you're from around there ?
nah I'm Greek and live in Brussels
so it's a bit hard to get to Borneo, but I love it there
difficult environment to shoot in, but a lot of fun
I imagine, never gone to Borneo but my wife is from Sumatra. Have visited some places in SE Asia, enjoyed my time there
ah nice, you speak bahasa?
2 words, then I realised they speak Hokkien in her family and I gave up to switch to learn Chinese
and I don't make any progress in it 😄
it's a lot of fun!
Indonesia? Looks like those Cambodian Buddhist temples
Ok but like, why have the crop on ever?
because I can
Thailand
what round were you using to take the trees down if you find them?
this kitty does not look pleased
She is just old, she was very pleased
best cult on the server!
Abandoned beach bar in Gili Air, Indonesia
one of us one of us
nice
thank you!
bagus !
terima kasih! apakah kamu berbicara bahasa ?
new years
itd look better if it was centered... not sure if you even captured the entire firework
if you brought the right side in a bit itd balance with the left side
I don't believe all things should be centered
neither do i
but this imo is a case where it should be, unless you took it in a way that could be rule of thirds
this imo also looks cool lol
heading through lightspace
XD
Another older reedit.
the orange shows in your picture
definitely
not that I didn't add +25 contrast when editing 😂
I probably could have shot it with a red filter and not added contrast
that's why I advocate for having every color filter ever for b&w
I have yellow, orange, red, dark red, green, and blue 😂 and some NDs
youre missing violet
or purple
or midnight
whatever u wanna call it
I find violet is crucial in a lot of situations
I've never shot with a violet filter but yes I do miss it
I tend to use blue with haze, not used green much but that's mostly a portrait filter and that's not my strong suite
its exactly how it sounds
violent? 😂
red + blue makes purple
and violet is like more blue than red
so youre pretty much getting more contrast with a lighter sky and darker greens
ja I know the colour wheel
yes
how would you diy the violet filter
a green and a blue filter 😛
ye
also, brown
and pink
all the colours
yes
seen this forum today and decided to try some monochrome
if you have any feedback or tips, please feel free to say!
Monochrome filter use (you'll never be able to distinguish between which filter you used in a week after shoot)
What?
As in physical colour filters
Referring to the discussion above between Devon and heinz
Ohhh. I thought it was a response to Maze’s photos and I was confused
i used violet filter when making prints! loved it. i really want a blue filter now though.
Some more red filter fun
Giza finally for broadband!
More fresh edits of old color shots
Interesting shot
Here's some seriously expired Tri-X Pan developed in X-Tol. I think I used my 28mm SMC Takumar?
Is it good guys?
its an off angled photo of a hand holding a lens
it dosent really show anything artistic or appealing about the lens itself
lack of motive
So what can i do to make it attractive?
generally for lens photography id tend to try to emphasise the colours of the coatings
though dosent apply to b+w
if you have strong light sources, would use that and shine it through the lens / using the stronger light to cast shapes through the glass
experiment around, see what puts your lens in the best light (literally)
You got the m10 mono?
i wish
100% opinion here but think about the composition first then the subject matter and how that can play into composition. ie think about the object, then focus on what the object is. if this makes sense.
Ill try
I like this, maybe a bit wider dof to have the whole fingers in focus.
i was trying to get the chess piece in focus (using MF)
We saw that it was a colour image before 👀 you've been made!
yes it was smh
i liked this one the most so far
tho it's out of focus
it's an intersting shot
i like this one because of the motion blur on the finger i am sucker for motion blur
ja it gives it life
mmhm
took you long enough to get a monochrome PFP 😂
the only "decent" photo i got of my self was that one from 2018
that's one more decent photo of yourself then I have 😂
XD
I’ll never have a monochrome pfp
this some heresy fr
Shoot me
join us
only in monochrome 😂
very monochrome
yesh
?
nope my brain shut down
top right
no way
Feedback Appreciated
Opinions? (Note: This is actually the rear of the car!)
Those are 🔥 🔥 🔥 in my opinion! I especially like #3 and #4
thanks man
I'm new to photography, so seeing good feedback is feels great ❤️
lovely car & photo
where did you take it?
the car is an "Auto Union Typ D". It has a 3 Liter V12 with dual superchargers, reached 485 bhp and 340kph top-speed. Built and raced in 1939, aka one of the darkest times in German History
in case you are interested
that's amazing
340kph sounds insane for 1939
it still is insane for 2023, too! but you are right
insane for 485bhp
had some fun light today
Feedback Appreciated
A tornado?! Nice aircraft.
Yessir
I love how the pic turned out
This is the colored original
great shot, works well in both b&w and colour, if I could add one bit of feedback (since it was asked) careful of the nose being ever so slightly clipped. Other than that, pretty decent set
the square inside the square inside the square, using a square format. I like that
Thanks
Yeah i just noticed the nose
I'm nit-picking of course, it's a minor detail
r u serving to get this close access? this doesnt look like airshow of public exhibition stuff.
Nope, I'm not serving
And this is actually a public exhibition on an airshow haha
This is the completely unedited original
The composition is doing a lot here
thats awesome! surprised that there is so much equipment on the tarmack as well. very cool shot.
thank you!
positive feedback means a lot to me since i'm only starting out
this tarmac is only ever used to either park private 152s/172s or for the annual airshow
great pic but isn't it slightly tilted right?
well, maybe... I need to invest in a screen for editing.
I have a curved one that is great for gaming but really suck when it comes to see things straight
better now ?
yep
looks better now for sure
although i still feel like it's tilted right

Had a bout with Covid. It gave me blur vision and double vision for a month or so. Finally able to expose some film since I’m recovered.
兔年快乐 🐰
lovely pic
the picture feels way too right leaning/tilted
Tree!
tree
TREE!
TREE!!!
🌳
I didn't knew how to edit that photo so i end up like that
It’s abstract, I like abstract:D
lil girl liked trees too!
Trees are good you are raising her well!
hehe
Really old tree too
I love the person in the center that's such a great shot!
Thank you. I walk by that place every night and there’s always a car parked out front blocking it. Getting the guy in the middle was the cherry on the cake
💯 the guy makes the image, it's so alove, the way he's the only bright / recognizable person in the whole scene, the posture all spot on. Perfectly executed Lunar 😄
Looking longer at it how do you feel about cropping it a bit 16:9 to remove some of the black on top?
I was considering it actually, I just wasn’t sure if it felt too tight
I like that!
Awesome 🙂 thank you
or use a macro lens
devon uses m4/3 most macro lenses would require them to be in the next citi to capture the entire frame in a single shot 😛
oh
my bad 💀
I'll get a macro lens for X mount

m4/3 does have a cheap (in ffeq) pana 60mm f5.6 which does pretty nice macro
I think this one ended a little under exposed but I thought the shadowy cat was cute
Now that is a legend
Local firefighters were doing low-level passes and I just had to snap some pics
Lovely Mi-17
That is such the workhorse, going on what 50 years now?
Yeah the design is turning 50 in a few years
This one in particular was transformed from military cargo heli to a firefighting one with the ability to mount bambi buckets. It also features modernised systems.
These are nice
Dope.
@mellow ledge foma400 or 100?
both it is
gotta get new film dev juice
theres fomadon r09 which is supposedly the same performance as agfa rodinal
Rodinal is a standard formula you can get it from a bunch of places
I use a DDX/ Rodinal mix. But I semi stand develop all my film.
You can also make your own
Nice colors indeed
Feedback Appreciated
this definitely says something about society somehow
I wish the horizon was leveled
Me too tbh
Can't do much about it though
well done ! Type of work you can submit in this week contest 🙂
Love those!!!
seems the mono channel is doubling as the street channel LOL
nice stuff
cant wait for september when i go to hawaii! got a new 24-120 lens to use out there.
wooh wooh
i still cant figure out how the fuck you did this
unless its just edited
this line should be telling
Tried photographing cars. 4x5 Ilford FP4. First image I cropped to 16x9
I want to crop at 21:9.
Then do it
Trying new aspect ratio
Am I a wildlife photographer now?
has to be the most popular angle for car shots ever! it makes almost car shot look cool.
absolutely
From the archive
And, yes, I'm aware that this is probably out of focus 🙃
nice
where monochrome jarring
kitty !
From the archive
hmmm im from “The Land of Lincoln” lol where was this taken?
The Soldiers and Sailors memorial in Cleveland
It depicts Lincoln and Sherman’s meeting aboard the steamer River Queen to plan the last campaign of the war
I think this doesn’t really fit bw, i just feels like there are less separation on this pic
Counterpoint, seeing only textures shows how the lizard might blend into an environment
I have a color version that you can see in #🌳・nature . I like both but I agree that the bw version is harder to read.
really need to kill these two rolls of bw…
Is this any good?
pretty nice
I don't even understand how I got this
Well cherub statues are apparently explicit. Have the rest of these now that they're processed
Noise but ok
Discord doesn’t know how to distinguish between sculpture and actual nudes, it’s silly
Makes any kind of sculpture photography hard to post, which is a shame
Absolute faithful depiction of the piece
I didn't even know that was a thing, first time I see it. Is it a service provided by discord or one of the server bot that does this ?
That’s Discord internal, not an extra bot
Went to pioneer town.
Played around with FPP 120.
Playing with my Pen
all awesome
Pic 5 and 6 are a bit 2 bright
i think it looks sick
Thanks : )
I liked this very simple
thanks 🙂
Wow how did you get this soft lighting
Alot of experimenting with masks and general experience
Minimalism
That is meme worthy lol
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/802837701023760404/1077327592857804820/MG_8749.jpg @mellow ledge going bw on fireworks is not something common
why does it post the image and not the link to your portfolio ?
Idk
Curtain lighting can actually pops up texture that I didn’t realise were there
👍
not sure if this is interesting but eh
