Good news everyone it is time for another Photo Assignment. Before we go into the rules let’s take a second to talk about the idea. The Assignments are about shooting a specific theme with a given set of restrictions. It’s not competitive but rather meant as an exercise to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

The assignment will run for three weeks to give everyone ample chance to participate, the restrictions included are “as close as possible”, if you can’t meet all of them it doesn’t mean you are excluded from the assignment, just try to get as close as you can.

At the end of the assignment, you are asked to share 5 shots you took as part of it. To maximize the learning effect, it is highly recommended that you attempt to go out with purpose and shoot all photos for the assignment in a single go, not just snap a shot every now and then.
As to the guidelines, and limitations posted they’re split into a few categories:

• Theme (the theme of the assignment)
• Focal length (this is given a type of length not a mm number and given in FFeq)
• Film type (color or monochrome if you shoot digital well convert it)
• Orientation of the frame (if you shoot film this and 6x6 this becomes irrelevant 😉)
• Use a single roll of film, or 36 images
• shoot you phots in a single session
• Limit yourself to a single ISO

Your assignment, should you accept it is:

Theme: Architecture
Focal Length: standard (35mm-75mm; FF eq)
Film: monochrome
Orientation: landscape

Note on the assignment: It is not about the perfect technical match but about the spirit of it. If you don't have a lens that exactly matches the category, use the closest you got. If you don’t have color film or can’t get it developed in time, use monochrome. And so on. It's about challenging yourself not about competing with others. You are not expected to buy gear to partake in the challenge, use what you must to follow the spirit of the assignment.

Note: The Assignment will be compiled in a final collage, by submitting your images you agree to this unless you ask to be left out.

Monochrome architecture, this'll be fun

very I'm extremely looking forward to this

#

got to get my beloved 50mm f/2

#

I’m looking forward to this as well, with my 35mm f/2

slim drum
#

lovely!

#

I wish I had the 35mm f/2 it is suposed to be a great lense but that comes with $$$$ price tag 😂

#

I might go for th 35mm f/2.8 idk yet

odd seal
#

I think we’re talking about different systems 😅. The Fuji 35mm f/2 is $300 or $400 new depending on if you get XC or XF

#

But it is a great lens

slim drum
#

Oh yes that’s fairly affordable

Coming back from the shooting.

sensor dust 😦 there'll be a little bit of editing for this one

slim drum
#

enbrace the dust!

#

perfect, going to a different city in the weekend and ill have 5 or so hours to kill on sunday

slim drum
#

that is perfect 😄

Here we go, Canon EOS R with dusty sensor, RF 35mm, ISO 400. BW conversion by pressing "Black and white" on Affinity Photo, no clue if it does something different than just desaturation when you don't move any sliders.

#

I have mixed feelings about this one, I'm not really satisfied with the assignment delivered but I think that the shots have potential after edition. It was fun shooting this so I may experiment a bit more in the subject 🙂 I'm starting to convert to the B&W Cult PepePhoto

This assignment was paaaaaaain

#

A, this is not something I'm particularly good at

#

B, trying to shoot buildings with a 58mm lens was interesting.

#

C, I don't know why I thought doing this with a Helios was a good idea.

#

I think the 3rd shot is actually the most successful, since it's a photo of blacked out windows, but reflecting the building from across the street.

Yeah, I kept wishing I had brought my 35 instead though

#

I only have a 35mm on my latest camera so the choice is easier

Is this from the same shooting session ? I like the mood and the composition here.

trail pine
slim drum
#

I really like the 3rd too

trail pine
#

I will admit to that being a bit of a happy accident. I really wanted to capture the shape created by the middle part, I wasn't trying to get the reflection.

#

This was all shot using Fuji's Acros +R film simulation.

slim drum
#

time to scan my film 😄

slim drum
#

Here we go, shot on delta 100 with a 50mm f/2.0

trail pine
#

Zeiss?

#

I see you also used a red filter

slim drum
#

Orange filter and Leica not Zeiss Sumicron-R 50 ❤️ live the R mount

trail pine
#

I'm calling that "close"

slim drum
#

they're quite different to be honest, Zeiss usually is very "technically correct" while Leica stives more for "characteristic"

#

that said for those kind of shots I kind of doubt there is a real noticable difference

trail pine
#

They're both German and orange is close to red. 🤣

slim drum
#

zeiss uses blue!

trail pine
#

Although my only experience with Zeiss is my partially broken Jena Tessar, so I'd never call it "technically correct."

slim drum
#

but yea they're both german which makes it so much more fascinating that they choose to go into extremely opposite directions of lens design and still produce very famous lenses in their own right

#

Jena is the east german Zeiss 😂 they only count half

trail pine
#

I like your reflected clouds photo a lot. The building seems crooked for some reason but the effect is amazing.

#

Your star-girder thing (2nd from the left) is also a cool use of negative space that I wouldn't have considered, but probably because it seems like such an unlikely shape to come across.

#

The smoke stacks are also really nice, but what happened on the right of the frame?

slim drum
#

Exposed film 😂

#

Was the last shot on the roll so it overlapped a bit with the part that got exposed during loading

trail pine
#

That's a shame

slim drum
#

I found it not super noticeable as the clouds were quite bright there so I’m surprised you picked up on it 😅

trail pine
#

My eyes went straight to it unfortunately.

#

It throws the balance of the photo off. Like if it were just clouds it would still bug me.

slim drum
#

on the bright side, you didn't notice the humongous film scatch I retushed out 😂

#

I think I can just burn that side a bit to get it to the same gray value as the left side and it'll be fine

trail pine
#

Possibly

#

I would have liked more contrast on #5 in the clouds too

slim drum
#

ja there are too many coulds in #5

#

can darken it a bit but it doesn't make that huge of a difference, I love the shapes in it however

#

I really like the shapes in that shot soi

fading sigil
#

Didn't have time to take more pictures so this was what i got(also shot it on my phone cuz i didn't have my camera on me)

slim drum
#

You still got a week of time, no reason to half arse it 😄

fading sigil
#

this isn't even in the same town i live in so i do not have time unfortunately

#

the tallest building is only 2 stories

#

and it's completely sorrounded by fields

split mulch
#

doesn't have to be tall buildings or anything, you can also do detail photos

slim drum
#

This isn’t the competition where it matters that you submit something, the goal here is to spend some time, go out and shoot with a specific constraint to learn and grow

loud rivet
#

ill have some more soon

slim drum
#

I do really like that, looking forward to the rest

split mulch
#

how does your jpeg look like that?

a7r3 + 50mm gm, bnw converted in C1 with +10 contrast

#

was a lot of fun to try but i cant say im happy with any of the shots. i saw a bunch of composition for longer focal lengths and vertical and im really not experienced with architecture

#

i think with some editing a couple shots that just dont work as unedited bnw could be alright
