Good news everyone it is time for another Photo Assignment. Before we go into the rules let’s take a second to talk about the idea. The Assignments are about shooting a specific theme with a given set of restrictions. It’s not competitive but rather meant as an exercise to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

The assignment will run for three weeks to give everyone ample chance to participate, the restrictions included are “as close as possible”, if you can’t meet all of them it doesn’t mean you are excluded from the assignment, just try to get as close as you can.

At the end of the assignment, you are asked to share 5 shots you took as part of it. To maximize the learning effect, it is highly recommended that you attempt to go out with purpose and shoot all photos for the assignment in a single go, not just snap a shot every now and then.
As to the guidelines, and limitations posted they’re split into a few categories:

• **Theme **(the theme of the assignment)
Focal length (this is given a type of length not a mm number and given in FFeq)
Film type (color or monochrome if you shoot digital well convert it)
• **Orientation **of the frame (if you shoot film this and 6x6 this becomes irrelevant 😉)
• Use a single roll of film, or 36 images
• shoot you phots in a single session
• Limit yourself to a single ISO

Your assignment, should you accept it is:

Theme: Light & Shadow
Focal Length: ultrawide (24mm and below; FF eq)
Film: color
Orientation: portrait

Note on the assignment: It is not about the perfect technical match but about the spirit of it. If you don't have a lens that exactly matches the category, use the closest you got. If you don’t have color film or can’t get it developed in time, use monochrome. And so on. It's about challenging yourself not about competing with others. You are not expected to buy gear to partake in the challenge, use what you must to follow the spirit of the assignment.

Note: The Assignment will be compiled in a final collage, by submitting your images you agree to this unless you ask to be left out.

Light and shadow? A shilulette?

#

I don't quite get it

#

Something that is about light and shadow 🙂 be creative!

glass oyster

this one will be interesting

main mesa
#

that's the goal 😄

runic mortar
#

Ima try doing this

main mesa
#

👍 welcome

#

I'm quite excited about his assignment, light & shadow in color could lead to some really interesting results

main mesa
#

Loaded some Superia X-Tra 400 for the assignment 😄

dawn drift
#

Definitely going to try to make this one work, but my widest lens is a 50mm ffeq, so it won’t be super wide 😅

main mesa
#

that's totally Ok, get the widest you can 😄

#

I don't have a 24mm either

viral nexus
#

I have exactly a 24

main mesa
#

you'll be one of the few that gets to use the exact range then 😄

viral nexus
#

And my images will still be shitty

proud escarp
#

why did it have to be colour ;-;

main mesa
#

the RNG asked for it

#

also making it hard is good :D, light & shadow in B/w would have been too easy wouldn't it have?

proud escarp
#

youre right but still, im just not in the mood for colour

main mesa
#

that's totally fair

carmine otter
#

Got a few nice shots this morning.

#

Really having a tough time taking advantage of color though.

#

I want to be doing this in black and white, because it's easier to do light and shadow when you don't have to worry about color.

main mesa
#

Yes it sure is, it’s a tough one and I like that:D

#

Struggling myself

proud escarp
#

i'll just wait a bit until i'm in the mood for colour again, otherwise it won't work no matter how hard i try

main mesa
#

👍

#

it's 3 weeks so no hurry

i had a dream ab how i saw a perfect light and shadow composition but didnt have my camera on me

main mesa

glass oyster

gotta rmemeber to take it into my dreams next time

main mesa
#

Ja

#

EOS R - 35 mm - ISO3200

main mesa
#

Oh really nice! That's cool stuff 😄

glass oyster
#

those some fire shots

carmine otter
#

Is that projection mapping?

snow cedar
#

Yes, they put a lightshow every summer on the cathedral.

proud escarp
#

i saw one of those a long time ago on a trip to somewhere in france where they were celebrating the 400th anniversary of a cathedral

#

was so cool

main mesa
#

extremely cool and grate choice as a subject for the assigment!

proud escarp
#

yes

#

i think i might studio for this one

#

outdoors is just very much not inspiring and the rules dont rule out studio and i recently got some new lights that i want to experiment with

main mesa
#

wooh

proud escarp
#

lights with a heritage o.o

carmine otter
#

Projection mapping has been a huge trend the last few years in Japan

#

At the snow festival in Sapporo they do it over the giant snow sculptures

proud escarp
#

thats awesome

carmine otter
proud escarp
#

thats such a cool way to use it

carmine otter
#

It really is

proud escarp
#

the cathedral thing in france i saw did a similar thing where there were little animated stories where the projection mapping interacted a lot with the already existing lines

#

there was especially one that i still remember that was a little character climbing the cathedral and another one that showed an interpretation of how it was built

#

its 9 years ago i think tho

#

dont remember the details

snow cedar
#

do you remember in what city it was ? Not remember when they started it here in Strasbourg but except the past 2 years, they're doing it every summer.

proud escarp
#

i can ask my mum where it was, all i remember for sure is its northern france

#

and it was a cathedral that was never properly finished

snow cedar
#

don't think it's in Strasbourg though, the cathedral is older than that. The problem is this kind of construction are always in working, when they finished they added another thing and you go again for centuries of construction. Sometimes they even didn't wait for it to finish before changing the plans.
I don't know how they decide the anniversary date.

proud escarp
#

yea the thing that happened here was a classic example of a king wanting the cathedral built and then the architect died and the king died as well so funding and design disappeared and it just was never finished

#

its not strasbourg tho, the france cathedral had two large towers with flat tops

main mesa
#

Tomorrow my film is deved, I hope I get a chance to pick it up then I'll have my submissions

#

took a different aporaoch this time after something @graceful moth mentioned during the review last week, I shot half the film on a single subject taking different looks at it, I'm curious how that turns out

graceful moth
#

mhhh

#

do I have any contact sheets around to show

main mesa
#

I wish there was a simple LR plugin to make contact sheet like images

graceful moth
#

there is a batch processing in PS

#

but it won't exactly look like the old school contact sheets

main mesa
#

ja and that means switching to PS

#

there is also the print as contact sheet option which one could make a PDF with then make a screenshot of the PDF but that also is super annoying

#

oh there is aprint to jpeg option that's no thte worst

graceful moth
#

oh I have screenshots of thelm

#

well of two

main mesa
#

old style contact sheets are sooo cool!

graceful moth
#

I'll scan them when I find them

#

just because it shows a process, it's a wonderful for that

That bottom pic top right guy at first glance looks like young Elvis

Here we go, my submission shot on fuji 400 with a 28mm lense

carmine otter
#

Oof, those greens and blues are gorgeous

main mesa
#

ja I quite like the fuji

viral nexus
#

I didn't know that this one's topic was pipes

carmine otter
#

If the weather holds I'm going to finish mine today

main mesa
#

Light & Shadow the bends of the pipes give for some nice reflections very dark and very bright spots 😄

viral nexus
#

I just thought it was about harsh shadows and stuff

main mesa
#

that is one way of dealing with the topic light & shadow, it's about being creative in the end

carmine otter
#

Woo! Finally finished one

#

This was a heckin' challenge for me.

snow cedar
#

Nice shots 👏

#

Wrong orientation though

carmine otter
#

...

#

.<

#

Really glad I didn't do it on film

proud escarp
#

it's fiiiine

carmine otter
#

I'm taking a win on this after missing or starting and missing so many challenges before thiis one

proud escarp
#

big win

#

imo its a win to just actually do it

#

i still have to do mine

#

actually have an idea tho

carmine otter
#

I just went out when the light was dramatic

#

I should challenge myself with artifical light at some point... And a flash.

proud escarp
#

this one will be studio for me

main mesa
#

I admit I shot a bunch of landscape shots one but sorted them out (and cropped one to be portrait :P)

main mesa
#

@carmine otter orientation aside, really great shots!

tepid nimbus
#

I only have a 29 and 38mm FF equivalent right now because of APSC (and the 29 is my 18-135 kit lens), if I get a 10-18 lens before this finishes then I'll submit some stuff. Or maybe I'll just shoot with the fisheye on my iPhone13.

viral nexus
main mesa
#

exactly, use the closest you have it's not a competition, there is no one to cheat, it's about the learning experience

snow cedar
# tepid nimbus Beautiful

Thank you ! I used a 35mm for this. Use what you can, it's about challenging yourself, learning and having fun 🙂

glass oyster
#

ight time to start this challenge i finally tested negative for covid and can leave my room

main mesa
#

Glad you recovered!

glass oyster
#

#

i tried to get some shots at my table but nothing planned out

plain mica
#

I have nothing from today

#

I couldn't walk around because I was in the car so no 24mm piccies :Sadge:

main mesa
#

😭

#

topaz magnet
