I am a staunch advocate for gold leaf myself. It gives a real authenticity that can't be beat by paint and is a lot easier to apply than one would think. You can purchase the artificial foil kits pretty cheap and even apply paint washes over the design to give a more weathered look. <Derp. I thought it was a 3d model for fabrication not a digital artpiece. Derp.>
