A lot of people argue that AI art isn't theft as it isn't copying the original images but referencing them like a person.

I'm a senior games coder & studied machine learning for my master's degree. This is entirely incorrect for reasons that are fundamental to programming & AI.

my question to that is that not comparable to how human's process sources/references? (Full disclosure i'm asking this as a devil's advocate) But with how i see A.I image generation and how generally technology like this is used it'll be used to cut down costs/time and increase efficiency.

#

like on* what basis do we compare human creative use of references to a machine? When we know how one works literally on paper and not the former is i guess what i'm getting at?

Fuck AI art

quaint python
#

Will give it a watch

#

am actually pretty interested in the subject

cloud musk
#

People speak about the internal workings of art AI with surprising confidence when it’s all just a black box.

Human creativity is referential, alwayshasbeen.jpg, an arbitrary line needs to be drawn — but it’s arbitrary.

analog geyser
#

Takes away the skill of actually drawing whilst also using human artists skill to compile a dogshit appropriation

#

Anybody that advocates for AI art and isn't an artist
Just isn't bothered to try learning tbh

delicate snow
#

makes shit people's shit easier to do as a tool enabling it further

#

Thiefs don't have to even trace anymore

quaint python
#

but that's the nature of tools and improvement of tools

analog geyser
#

AI art as a supplementary tool is fine
They can make good references for specific poses or w/e

delicate snow
analog geyser
#

But making art pieces is like, why not try it yourself
Especially since it requires human art to actually

#

Make it

delicate snow
#

scientists didn't want to kill millions of people because of it, it still happened

quaint python
#

photo composition for example requires artistic knowledge, but you're creating something new through compiling or editing what already exists

analog geyser
delicate snow
#

but as much as ai generation can help, it does more harm than good in the whole aspect

analog geyser
quaint python
#

i dont want to spam irrelevant art from another game but i'd like to illustrate my example pls

cloud musk
#

People generally stopped being interested in handmaking cars when the process was automated.

I’m iffy about AI art, but rejecting it to preserve some perceived virtue in human art borders upon being luddism.

analog geyser
#

It shouldn't be compared to real art

#

Unless the computer has sentience, then it might as well be real art

hollow moth
#

analog geyser

It should be categorised differently

quaint python

There will always be a market distinction between Human and AI art, even when people can’t tell the difference.

delicate snow
analog geyser
#

Tbh I would not pay for an AI art

#

Why would you?

#

No work was actually done

quaint python
#

but for concept, and at a glance it serves it's function well

analog geyser
#

Concept art compositions are usually done manually

delicate snow
quaint python
#

uncanny

analog geyser
#

For starters
Though I'm not too well versed in the industry to know if they started using AI art

#

But they're usually Photoshop mock ups

quaint python
#

imo the best photocompositions exist when you combine multiple skillsets(digitial painting, photoediting etc)

delicate snow
sharp egret
#

like me?

hollow moth
analog geyser
#

If it's just prompts, there is no effort

#

Unless they programmed the application themselves

delicate snow
analog geyser
#

Again, if it has no human labour for an art piece, it's not worth the money

quaint python
analog geyser
#

Well, you can't?

#

That's why it's an issue?

hollow moth
#

^

analog geyser
#

Cause they could potentially replicate specific artists and just eventually copy their specific styles if they were malicious

sharp egret
#

you guys reject AI but using it every day

delicate snow
#

technically you can, laws need to be formed. I mean it won't trully stop it but people doing it will be branded illegal which is more than enough for me

analog geyser
#

What AI

#

Lmao

delicate snow
#

actually you know what, since we all waiting for darktide to relase i will continue drawing, but have no desire to continue my mechanicus, any requests or suggestions? i will at very least sketch it

analog geyser
#

Nothing I use is an artificial intelligence

99% of "AI" Is just a set of programs that run keyword checks through a database
How is that an AI?

quaint python
#

if it cant be proven then on what basis can it be enforced?

analog geyser
#

But it's just very annoying

quaint python
#

cause using copyrighted/owned material is bad we agree. But it's like the limewire days.

delicate snow
hollow moth
#

no references though

#

if i did they would be on my pc

delicate snow
#

cloud musk
#

Two years ago:

  • AI art is laughable, it will never compare to human art.

Now:

  • Okay AI art looks nearly as good but human art needs to be protected from its advances.

Two years from now on:

  • ???

AI beat Chess players, it beat GO players. Everyone said it could not be done. Yet they did anyway. We severely overestimate human potential since we’re stoopid little survival engines — time and time again.

hollow moth
#

interesting point

delicate snow
#

ai art has no ai in it tho

analog geyser
#

My style is very simple
I'm still relatively new

hollow moth
#

dog suit

delicate snow
#

ai is acronym for artificial intelligence, it does not containt artificial intellignnce as it's not actually learning anything

analog geyser
#

It literally collages from a database based on your prompt

#

The only actually intelligence part is that it scans for those features

cloud musk
analog geyser
#

Based on the internet definition

#

We have no real AI

#

Omnissiah bless that

quaint python
#

Again i think it's just an evolution of tools, if enforcement is nigh impossible. You cant really distinguish it on much of any basis except i guess asking the artist themselves to prove their talent or breakdown their work.

It'll probably be used as a tool in the professional field in the near future (if legislation fails) for actual artists to take advantage from as a way to make a foundation to edit/collage themselves and curate into something better/specialized for whatever project.

#

Even if legislation does pass on it

#

i imagine even from stock images this would be an invaluable tool

analog geyser
#

It can be used as a tool yeah
I agree
However 99% of the time it's gonna be used to undercut and undermine actual artists

#

Like we've seen when people sell AI art

#

Or NFTs

delicate snow
analog geyser
#

Yep

quaint python
#

of course

analog geyser
#

That's the proof

#

For the actual artist

#

However AI art cannot have that
Unless someone programs a bot to compile layers

#

But that wouldn't work unless it working through an art application

delicate snow
#

lol

cloud musk
#

Of course they can, it just depends on how they’re trained.

#

It’ll be available in the far future if there’s a demand for it.

quaint python
#

super curious to see where it goes, no doubt the same or similar things will happen to the music industry too

#

if i recall there were those "a.i written" songs being passed around the internet like on a piano some time ago

analog geyser
#

Solution: Molotov tech companies

#

There is no emotion in AI art tbh

hollow moth
#

as time goes on, the effort in art just becomes a joke. If Ai created shit continues

quaint python
#

perhaps, but imagine it could get to a point where you could use a.i to generate you assets that dont take much creative effort

delicate snow
cloud musk
#

It’ll end up like any non-deterministic activity using machine learning to solve the problem.

It has low value on its own, but you need folks to synthesize requirements and post-process the output of the AI to make it useful.

analog geyser
#

The programming ability is useful
The product is well done

#

It takes skill to program an AI art bot

quaint python
analog geyser
#

It does not take skill for random users to do so

hollow moth
#

yea

quaint python
#

how so?

hollow moth
#

removes the entire starting process of the sketching the rendering and everything that even brings life into a drawing

#

removing the start removes why art is enjoyed

analog geyser
#

I mean, I can technically see how that would work
Ala concept art mock ups
But that's usually done manually since that's easier touch up

hollow moth
#

since every single drawing is a process in itself

#

people fuck up but the artist corrects it down the line

analog geyser
#

Lol

#

I don't

hollow moth
#

there could be 20 sketches but only 1 sketch is used for the final piece

analog geyser

hollow moth
analog geyser

delicate snow
#

"happy mistakes" - Bob Ross

analog geyser
#

Yeah I get you and i agree

#

Just adding humour

quaint python
#

if it's an illustration sure, but if you want 30 variations of lets say a new space marine. You could in theory get a decent render of a space marine in a 3/4ths view in 5 mins and go from there if you have the artistic skill. You could use the generated image as a foundation for your original creative process.

hollow moth
#

especially certain artists that share all their anatomy practice and etc

analog geyser
#

That's just making a custom reference

hollow moth
#

yea

analog geyser
#

Which is what we kinda said is fine

quaint python
#

yes, i'm talking about using a.i art as a tool.

#

the positive aspect of the tech.

hollow moth
#

actually he just described nfts

hollow moth
analog geyser
#

Huh

#

But grabbing reference images of the web is the same tbh

#

It's just more cursted

#

Curated*

hollow moth
analog geyser
#

Oh

#

That's not okay

#

Imo

quaint python
#

not saying to just get image of space marine, and boom i'll edit the color. (Just wanted to keep it somewhat 40k themed)

hollow moth
#

still wont slide with me

#

what does slide is taking the time to draw a space marine, leaving the color layer blank

#

and hand rendering each variation chosen

#

cause you are still doing that anyways

#

for the final piece

quaint python
#

hang on lemme pull up a vid, to show you what i mean

analog geyser
#

Kinda breaking off from the convo, but any tips for making the shading look better? I'm trying to branch out into using hard shadows more but I can't seem to nail it

#

I think the pose and linework is alright

hollow moth
analog geyser
#

I already do

#

I use my kit as reference

#

However It's just hard to put into practice

hollow moth
#

just basically just use the creaks of certain parts of clothes, depending on how large the creak depends shadow size

#

aka intensify the shadows a bit

analog geyser
#

Ah like the deeper the fabric Crease, the darker the shadow

hollow moth
#

yeah

analog geyser
#

Fair enough

#

Yeah good idea

hollow moth
#

couldn’t find proper terms since i just call them clothes flaps

analog geyser
#

I'll add that to my Vox operator drawing

quaint python
#

cant find vid, but for example if i wanted to lets say give a design a cape, or some kind of cool cloak from a material i'm not familiar with like ghillie netting onto my design. And i got a a.i image generator to make me a ghillie cloak. And I use it like a photo composite and then proceed to edit it and make it my own? Would that be malicious?

delicate snow
# analog geyser Kinda breaking off from the convo, but any tips for making the shading look bett...

many ways to takle it and i personally try to use a different method every time, biggest challenge and usually good results is to do a lot of very low opacity paint overs until it looks smooth, also some principles of rendering like the simplest one i can think of is to assume one source of light and shade a lot of parts of your characters as if they were individual objects ( look at muscles, a lot of balls and ovals )

analog geyser
#

But imo no

quaint python
#

solely as a template, to understand the material

analog geyser
#

But to others it might be

quaint python
#

no different than making a composite design

#

that's either well edited, or put together well or indistinguishable from the original. A tool to generate required assets.

#

or even to generate required references, possibilities are high imo.

hollow moth
#

its good advise if there was some skin showing

#

but skin and clothes are different

#

well yeah that's the hard part, you must visualize every other shape as 3d in reference to light source for good shading

#

then there is the aspect of light bounce, light coming off from nearby surfaces and relitting the shadows themself

But it might be the move to improve shading since it allows much better shade maps

That's not holding anything But the gun

hollow moth

you can like see that the chest is being clamped up a bit but like only one thing is attached

hollow moth

since back sling isnt obvious until i looked back at the drawing

quaint python

i do like the staged reloads

analog geyser

It's got picatinny, staged reloads, realistic animations

quaint python

it's almost there

analog geyser
#

I mean, Not much you can do for a laser rifle

#

Other than that

#

quaint python
#

always wondered cause i'm more new to the 40k lore

#

isn't a laser sniper rifle a horrible idea?

analog geyser
#

Nope

#

Speed of light

quaint python
#

but it gives away exactly where you shot from

analog geyser
#

But las guns aren't really lasers

#

Oh yeah ig

quaint python
#

there's no point in concealment

analog geyser
#

But for high priority targets they use autoguns

#

Or railguns (as some of the assassins have used)

#

The average guard squad isn't really too worries about concealment

#

But yeah iirc lasers being traced back is an issue

quaint python
#

what is the guard exactly? are they ww1 infantry?

analog geyser
#

But they aren't really lasers either

#

Nah

quaint python
#

or are they more modern?

analog geyser
#

Depends

#

The guard is an incredibly large and diverse military branch where based on the planet the regiment hails from, can be extremely modern or extremely backwards

quaint python
#

i have a hard time wrapping my head around the guard and their power status

analog geyser
#

Also depends on how much standardisation they've gotten too

#

Fuedal world guard regiments typically wear medieval plate and chain mail whilst having lasguns and chainswords

quaint python
#

they're cannon fodder except not always kinda like stormtroopers in starwars i guess

analog geyser
#

Not really canonfodder

#

Thatd be the PDF

#

The Guard are well trained and disciplined

#

Just that the books/games show fucking horrific shit

#

But they constantly hold the line And win a lot of major battles by themselves

quaint python
#

like i see a kriegsman and they look somewhat primitive? And using their weaponry in Darktide it feels very inefficient but does hit like a truck.

analog geyser
#

Krieg is the case of planet adapting solely to siege warfare, so their gear reflects their tactics

#

The lucius pattern is made because the wood furniture is cheap, and the ergonomics allow for better bayonet charges

quaint python
#

do the guard have different branches?

analog geyser
#

Yep

quaint python
#

like how do you seperate all the specializations

analog geyser
#

The guard follows a lot of similar doctrine with British armed forces

#

So you'll see a lot of similarities

quaint python
#

ic

analog geyser
#

But it also has a mix of Soviet style political officers

#

The commissars

quaint python
#

yup

analog geyser

I'm not too well versed on aeldari lore

quaint python

i'm just wondering who will get the assassin architype class

#

it

pine dust
quaint python
#

*it could be either vet or zealot or both, a friend of mine said psyker technically could

analog geyser
#

But I think and correct me if I'm wrong, physically they're closer to humans but their psychic powers/abilities greatly outpace regular human psykers and thus can tweak and augment their physical strength with it

quaint python
#

Vet seems to be primed for it but who knows FatFish's outlook

analog geyser
#

They're taller than reg humans

#

They do share a lot of uncanny features with humans

#

And the only anatomy book about them was written by a crazed heretic

pine dust
#

Eldar have better reflex and also strength

quaint python
#

the lore i've seen about 40k assassins is they're super op too

pine dust
#

Than regular human of course, SM are stronger, but slower

quaint python
#

which makes me wonder if instead we'll see a SF guard regiment that uses stealth tactics or something

#

or something similar

#

but it's a popular architype so i'm really curious in what form it'll come

pine dust
analog geyser
# pine dust Eldar have better reflex and also strength

Depends on the lore
Iirc there is a few excerpts that show normal humans being able to beat an Eldar in h2h if they're not augmenting their strength

But They re definitely more strong in the sense their muscles are more efficient

quaint python
#

ik

analog geyser
#

Honestly my little headcanon is that Humans and Aeldari are very much closely related as a species, due to Old one fuckery

#

Old ones*

#

But I know that's not true

quaint python
#

but most likely it wont be any of the one's that're gender locked as it's likely not logical for them to suddenly gender lock a class when the main idea is for us to make our own character.

pine dust
#

Old ones didn't tweaked mankind though, while they did elevated and tweaked eldars

quaint python
#

which arent the deathcult assassins all women?

#

and they're the weakest ones right?

pine dust
#

No

analog geyser
quaint python
#

then who is?

pine dust
#

I meant no they aren't all female

quaint python
#

ah

pine dust
#

Death cults can be either only male, only female or mixed

quaint python
#

but they fit zealot's architype right?

pine dust
#

Yes

quaint python
#

but dont they also not speak?

analog geyser
#

Also depends,
I read a pr good theory that the Emperor of mankind is possibly a backup created by the Old ones.
Though we know he was created by the sacrifice of shamens

scarlet hornet
#

Stabi is bestest zealot

pine dust
#

In fact a death cult assassin is one of the many ideas for the classes that the community come up with

pine dust
analog geyser
#

Dealth cult would be hard to introduce

quaint python
analog geyser
#

How are they gang pressed into penal servicd

quaint python
#

(still learning the overwhelming amount of lore lol)

analog geyser
#

That's the difficult part to explain

pine dust
analog geyser
#

Yes but aren't they indoctrinated by the use of brain washing and drugs

quaint python
#

still the only thing about zealot is the class's architype isn't really geared towards the glass cannon high dps, it's more of a bruiser

analog geyser
#

Also death cult assassins are extremely useful

pine dust
quaint python
#

not that V2 didnt have some really drastically varied classes (hunstmen)

pine dust
analog geyser
#

I mean like, ig Grendyl could just lie so they could just have ond

analog geyser

#

Exactly like there are tons of ranks that vary in name from world to world

analog geyser
#

#

But that's a valid idea

pine dust
#

But Explicator is an official rank

analog geyser
#

#

Now*

pine dust

pine dust
analog geyser
#

Hmm

#

#

I'll need to read to confirm

pine dust
#

Earlier books used the term 'Acolyte' to cover the ranks of 'Explicator', 'Interrogator', and the unexplained 'Notary' only.

analog geyser
#

Interesting

pine dust
#

Some apprentice Inquisitors start at the rank of Explicator, where they learn how to extract information using torture under the direction of their mentor Inquisitor. Explicators then move up as more experience is gained in the ways of the Inquisition to the rank of Interrogator.
