Not a book but I just read the codex Aeldar. Apart from the wraithbone blurb that everyone hated on, I must say that compared to third edition (the last codex I owned), it's a work of beauty. GW really learnt how to present their factions.

• Valedor: Very good, one of the few peak Eldar books

• The Last Days of Ector: Also pretty good, some nice Eldar/Space Marine stuff in it

• Deathstorm: Pretty mid, also has another dumbass mcguffin plotpoint with a governor's blood that can "cure" the curse of the Blood Angels like lmao

• Tempestus: Not bad, mostly a passable one but its a novella so worth a read.

• Devourer: Very whatever.

• Wraithflight: Another Eldar short, not too bad but nothing to write home about.

• Shadow of the Leviathan: Very mid bolterporn book, lots of Ultrawank.

• The Word of the Silent King: The Blood Angels and Necrons teamup Short, worth a read to at least be knowledgable in that particular event i think.

• Dread Night: Worth a read because the idea of a GK waking up in the midst of a daemon vs nids invasion is very funny, also nothing to write home about but its a Short and kinda comedic so worth enough to read imo.

• Blood Harvest was a nice intro, a look into a conscripts point of view as their planet is invaded. A bit of apocalypse survival feel to it.

• The Long and Hungry Road was nice because it mostly focused on a hive fleet. However, it felt a bit like the author was just ticking off the stages of invading a GSC infested world.

• The Devouring Void was high action, high excitement but really the 'nids were just a plot device for the story of the inquisitor. Could have been any other enemy faction really.

• Devilhunter was quite cool. Trapped in the jungle with a lictor. It felt a lot like Predator.

• The Convocation is perhaps the story I enjoyed the most. Perhaps since I recently played the Rogue Trader DLC 😉

There was a reason why humans named their species "Hercules" after all.

Their eyes looked down, and saw dead bugs. Now death wasn't unusual, it was simply how things are. However, what was the strange part was the lack of bites. All the bugs seemed to be mostly intact.

And where were the ants? They would usually swarm around the dead corpses for food, but they seemed to be gone. Almost like they sensed danger. But... that couldn't be right. Ants were fearless, self-sacrificial drones, working tirelessly for their queen.

They flew down to investigate. They crept closer to the various corpses to find chunks cleanly cut off. Too clean. There was no weakness, having their mandibles or horns stuck, instead it was perfect. As if the culprit's strength was enough to kill them instantly.

Walking forward from the trail of bodies, blood, and viscera. It finally arrived at a bug crawling away. A praying mantis, it was limping away out of desperation.

Normally this would constitute a fight, or even threats, but the praying mantis looked up at the beetle.

They saw a sudden flash, and the praying mantis got bisected. The Mantis's blank stare looking at the beetle while it slammed into the nearest plant stem. Their legs twitched in a last sign of life before finally going still.

The Hercules beetle saw another one of his species, but it looked... wrong. It was made out of some mysterious, glistening, unnatural material. Not chitin, not flesh, it was something new. Glowing fluorescent lights of unknown origin were all over it. Wings attached to small, swirling towers. Hissing and clanking passively.

They could smell the rotting remnants of their flesh beneath the layers of its unnatural armor.

The head hung limply, dead eyes staring down at the ground, with an axle stabbed through it crudely. Was it even aware? Was it even alive?

It wasn't natural. It was an abomination. The Hercules beetle felt some type of... duty. This thing couldn't be allowed to roam the earth and the sky. It killed without reason.

The mighty Hercules beetle positioned their horn towards it. Similar to a knight pointing a sword at its foe. They hissed at it. It raised it's head in a sudden and quick manner. Engines within its body began to hum. A pale imitation of their species' habits and mannerisms. The Hercules beetle felt fear, every instinct was telling them to run, but this wasn't something that they can run from.

Do or die.

They both charged at each other.
