This is more a meme than a reality.
Hives are acrologies. Which by design would actually have very low overall environmental impact, but the pollution that is created would obviously be concentrated within the structure (the underhive) and the immediate surrounding environment. This is something touched on in the Rogue Trader TTRPG. And subtley hinted at in Necromunda.

The widespread pollution/hostile biomes in most cases came before the hives were formed. And said hives were formed to counter act/adapt to the hostile surroundings.
