@sullen bison But basically, 40k gets new lore through faction codexes and books. Its mostly minor lore drops though, big events rarely happen because the setting mostly needs to be stuck on a small loop for some narratives to take place.
At the end of the day its a toy soldier game.
For example the Primaris marines were never established once in lore but appeared out of nowhere and now every marine chapter is mostly gathering them to their own ranks under Guilliman's orders.
The lore is pretty feeble and made to be edited at any moment to push minis into place. GW workers themselves have said they design miniatures for the factions first then add the lore around them later.
