#

a lot of 40K is political satire

#

they literally named the worst Ork of all after Margaret Thatcher, they are not subtle in these things

#

the mechanicus is what you get when people abandon scientific thought for magical thinking, they have no fucking idea how anything works and only make it worse by hording knowledge

storm jungle
#

Yeah 40k stopped being satire long ago though

#

i guess its not that great for today's climate lol

peak hamlet

#

@storm jungle then again thgis political climate isnt exactly great either.

NGL, i wouldn't be surprised if GW add that during the period of anarchy on terra, in which only the imperial palace remained a place of order... Like, some mob tried to attack the imperial palace walls and got neutralized immediately

dim totem
#

Yh I do like that better

#

I feel like the imperial palace should be impenetrable for dumb heretics

storm jungle
#

Yeah but its the thought that counts

barren tapir
#

I don't remember if it is official, but i read an excerpt where a custodes got attacked by chaos cultist, and while he killed them all one managed to put a pickaxe into the knee joint... So yeah, i imagine that they have to deal with dumb heretics daily... And those heretics don't achieve much

dim totem
#

That would be a cool spin-off game lol

Throwing heretics out of the imperial palace

crisp heath
#

Does anyone know who can kill demons in 40k lore as in, removing them from existence in the immaterium, and if a demon is killed, does that have a corresponding effect on real space? Given that (demons are parts of the chaos Gods?) and the immaterium is a reflection of the normal universe?

final spruce
#

What we currently know that is able to permanently kill a daemon are the Emperor's Sword, some blanks and the Book of Names used by the Grey Knights

crisp heath
#

Gotcha, but beyond (in theory) reducing the chaos god's power slightly, this would likely have no effect? Is this a mechanic or law of reality that just isn't explored very well?

final spruce
#

It's not really a law of reality since daemons are above reality because warp

#

It's just that, it takes a special kind of power to destroy raw soul stuff / emotions

#

Plus it wouldn't really harm a Chaos God, they are so big the only way to effectively depower them would be Big E's plan, turns us into unfeeling boys or above emotions

summer niche
#

Kaldor Drago can prob kill daemons

final spruce
#

If Matt Wards wills it

open marsh
strange depot
#

if a daemon is weak enough just wrecking it's corporeal form is enough

final spruce
#

Nope

strange depot
#

once it returns to the warp the others will devour it

open marsh
#

Also, certain chaos artefacts can kills daemons. That which is of the warp can slay those of the warp.

crisp heath
#

Lol well yes but to be more to the point, the immaterium is as I understand it, tied to peoples collective souls/minds. If it were possible to just "erase it". It would result in the death of every living creature that has a connection to it. So I am curious could killing demons potentially kill the beings that they are manifested from?

strange depot
#

though when it comes to daemons fighting they prefer to bind their enemies, gives greater power and prestige than just dissolving them

#

a daemon has to be exorcised to keep it from killing the person it possesses if the person survives the exorcism

#

even if the survive the exorcism their body could be a ruin afterwards

final spruce
#

However you're right in your assumption that deleting the warp would kill things linked to it

crisp heath
#

Aren't the chaos gods manifestations of peoples souls/fears/feelings though?

summer niche
#

What about that excorcist scahpter of astartes?

#

Chapter*

strange depot
#

they can exorcise daemons but they do need shit

#

they can't just do it

#

rituals and talismans and such

#

happens in Shadowbreaker

final spruce
strange depot
#

the main thing about the exorcists is that they are basically can't be possessed or it's so difficult it's impractical

summer niche
#

Yeah was just thinking about their bodies not being fucked over by the possession

#

They got plot armour i suppose

final spruce
#

So do most space marines

strange depot
#

they undergo a ritual demonic binding and have to force the daemon out of their body through will alone

#

if it takes too long they just rip you apart and destroy every trace

peak hamlet
#

It also shoud be worth noting that there aren't just the 4 gods and their minions, there are tons of independend demons, tons of small warp spawn but also quite a few really powerful ones

grand minnow
#

So basicaly managers

potent swift
#

Think of it like Youtube. You got the big name Channels that have a bunch of content creators in each one but there's also a ton of smaller channels and independent folk. Some are practically house hold names while others have tiny dedicated followings that keep them afloat, and the odd ones out who got like 4 subscribers but keep trucking on in obscurity.

What is the current stance between the Imperium and the Eldar anyway? Last I remember they were temporarily neutral with one another (At least on a small scale) during the fall of Cadia and the weeks afterwords.

Like, I can't imagine hostilities ceased wholesale, but I can imagine a few Eldar finally realizing that if they stop killing humans they can use them as meatshields (With humanities consent no less.) more proactively.

cloud kindle
#

depends on the craftworld

#

there are some alliances with certain craftworlds and the imperium

crisp heath
#

They're allies more often then they're not

final spruce

Currently the Imperium Secundus aka Gulliman's realm has a peace treaty with the Ynnari

But Eldar/Human alliances are the most common ones like aforementioned

eternal ledge
#

So Tyranid question. Could the Genestealer Broodmind control lesser Tyranid bioforms like gaunts?

primal tide
eternal ledge
#

It's for a Wrath and Glory campaign idea and I don't want to break the lore

final spruce
#

Genestealers are a bit independant from the Hivemind

eternal ledge
#

I got some cool ideas that I can blend bits the bugs from Mimic (1997) and the Ceph from Crysis 2; that a Genestealer cult got their hands on some Tyrranid spores or eggs and were using them on a hive world to start a Tyrranid invasion from within the planet's under hive. Using the Brood mind as a sort of mini hive mind

Process would work like Micro-nids infect population breaking them down into biomass that gets eventually transferred to create bigger and bigger nid forms.

mint hill
#

Tyranids can continue on if there's no hive mind presence controlling them, they just act like wild animals (more or less)

eternal ledge
#

Hmmm

#

They could sneakily release the feral swarms in areas to sew chaos

storm jungle
#

Also

#

the genestealer that usually started that entire fucking mess usually tries to escape to a new world

#

because being so independant he doesnt really want to be eaten again due to animalistic instincts iirc

eternal ledge
#

Nope the Patriarch dies with the world

storm jungle
#

Nope, it depends

#

Some are loyal enough to be allowed to get eaten

#

Some do try to escape

primal tide
#

Down with the patriarchy

eternal ledge
#

It's kinda funny because when it is consumed by the reclamation pit it releases control of the cultists from the brood mind and they all look around and go, "Oh we fucked up" before being eaten

final spruce
#

I mean we have known of gsc leavinng the doomed planet aboard ships

barren tapir
#

In general when the hive mind arrive the brood mind get replaced, sometime they remain independent

cerulean wagon
#

i think its a tenure thing

storm jungle
#

Yeah its up to you basically

#

so go nuts

eternal ledge
cerulean wagon
#

the longer a cult is active the more likely it is to mutate and divert away from its original hive

final spruce
#

It's usually what happens when you get Gen 5 genestealers

barren tapir
final spruce
#

Since Gen 5 are purestrain

#

They are able to become patriarchs

#

So either their replace the current one or go setup another cult elsewhere

#

My knowledge from GSC comes from their 8th edition codex

#

So take it with a bit of salt

barren tapir
#

Remember also that pure genestealers are effectively nids, and GSO use regularly pure genestealers during their uprising

tiny nova
#

GSC and Nids both use purestrains but purestrains can't make Nids, they are just useful to nids in the sense that they are covert and can make more of themselves and are still made out of biomatter that can be recycled for other nid purposes if needed, they can't do any of the eating planets stuff that's why GSC purpose is to call hive fleets

peak hamlet
#

Yeah

#

Did anybody doubt that?

tiny nova
#

They aren't "effectively Nids"

peak hamlet
#

They are nids

tiny nova
#

They are Nids as much as any mass that Nids eat, they are aligned with them but they are their own thing as well

peak hamlet
#

They are a nid species just as the other gaunts or larger monsters

tiny nova
#

Those species can and do repurpose biomatter, Nids don't they are just food when they die/become unoptimal for the situation

#

It's like saying a kroot is a Tau based on the fact that they work together.

peak hamlet
#

Genestealers are nids tho. They will get created by hive fleets if that fleet need them

#

Thus they are nids

peak hamlet
tiny nova
#

If that's the case then why aren't 3-5th generation genestealers loyal to nids?

peak hamlet
#

Because humans arent nids

#

???

final spruce
#

They are loyal to nids

#

Primarely to the Broodlord

tiny nova
#

Purestrains come from that though. Nah when the Nids show up they're like oh shit we fucked up, they become disillusioned

#

It used to be that they got a happy end and just jumped into the spawning pools to be repurposed, but GW retconned that

peak hamlet
#

Humans arent always loyal to the hive fleet, genestealers are

tiny nova
#

In reference to the more human, genestealers are genestealers not humans, once you get the taint you are no longer human

peak hamlet
#

They arent human but they arent nids either

#

They are more human than nid

tiny nova
#

They resemble humans physically more sure but that's a grey area because their babies come looking out like 2nd generation guys and theyre still bipedal but holy hot damn do they look scrambled. Alot of the lore for them is also conflicting when you look at the RT stuff

peak hamlet
#

Yeah, mutants

#

Simple as

tiny nova
#

At the end of the day, hivefleets are 3d printers so they could make humans as well (which goes against the min max dogma of hivefleets) but genestealers existed before tyranids were in the galaxy so ide put them less akin to gaunts or threshers or any of the Kaiju and more inline with things like Zoats.

shell pebble
#

Fuckin' wish they'd print out something that actually looked hybridized with another species tbh

tiny nova
#

Gaunts and the full range was probably aliens from another galaxy

primal tide
#

For an ever evolving race they sure do stay the same

shell pebble
#

^

tiny nova
#

They still do have evolutions, Nids suck on tabletop for the same reason orks do(sometimes, right now they're ok) balance

shell pebble
#

For a race that wants to continue to adapt and evolve, they sure suck at making anything look different from the rest or give out something thats actually useful for the basic foot troops

#

I get the models have to look similar due to not wanting them to mistake models for something else but its head scratching at times

tiny nova
#

The points cost of a space marine squad and a group of gaunts wouldn't even be comparable, neither would the sm's destruction but it's a scale thing

#

It takes time to adapt and they've only been a thing for a little while compared to everyone else

#

I think the earliest spotting was like 37m maybe?

shell pebble
#

But in lore, they're known to be masters of adapting, quickly making up for weaknesses in battles

tiny nova
#

Yeah but when you fight someone on a water planet then you go to a desert planet the same evolutions won't work

#

So they have the most optimized template that modifies itself based on the current challenges it faces

peak hamlet
#

Thats why they don't use the same evolutions on a desert planet

shell pebble
#

I mean on a singular planet and doing their invasion schtick, they're known to adapt quickly

#

Added on their swarming tactics and any behind-the-scene espionage/assassination by GSC or Lurkers or what have you, it makes them a powerful threat

tiny nova
#

Yeah and there are multiple hive fleets that have different ideas of what's better/worse. They are a powerful threat they eat planets and take massive resources to stop. But whose to say the adaptations they make on one planet will work on the next? Also iirc they don't have warp travel so it takes them awhile to get around

shell pebble
#

Actually dont they just eat the surface of a planet according to recent lore?

#

They dont actually eat the entire planet its so dumb

tiny nova
#

Idk haven't read recent nid lore too much, I think they do about the equivalent of glassing a planet and sucking it's resources out with a straw

#

It's also hard to get adaptations when your hivefleet is destroyed

peak hamlet
#

They just eat every life form they can find and filter the atmosphere and surface off microorganisms

shell pebble
#

I find thats pretty dumb, because there's models that are known to eat inorganic material to fuel their weapons

#

Just eat the fuckin' planet man

primal tide

It's too spicy

#

Magma spicy man

shell pebble
#

Too much chipotle......

tiny nova
#

I think it's probably one of those things like I could lick the bottom of the bowl for scraps or I could just go get another full bowl

shell pebble
#

I doubt that

tiny nova
#

There's also the theory that they're running from something but there's not alot of credence to that

shell pebble
#

Thats more plausible

storm jungle
#

Just here to say

#

Old Ones totally made the nids guys

peak hamlet

Thats very stupid imo

#

trust me i got theories

Source: ||froggychair ||

peak hamlet
tiny nova
#

Nids are hungry boys who gotta have their supper, and if there's not much left on a planet that they like to eat there's more planets

shell pebble
#

Anyway point is, I dont believe that gargantuan ships that use billions of resources to travel the stars and yet can produce billions of foot soldiers on a whim cannot adapt to whats going on within hours or days based on what said foot soldiers are experiencing via synapse

storm jungle
#

Yeah thats the thing with nids

#

they're incredibly OP species in realistic terms

#

its why they should have like 10000 bioforms ready to counter any form of combat counter against them

#

BUT its 40k and such things would probably destroy like half the imperium

#

hence why they gotta be shot in the knee with the plot-gun here and there

shell pebble
#

I feel like its almost forced though

storm jungle
#

Oh god yeah its forced

tiny nova
#

Otherwise we have another endtimes situation

storm jungle
#

hence my mention of the Plot Gun

shell pebble
#

Fuck, just have it be like "Oh they adapted to us? Just smash them harder lmao" and I'd be happy

They are a looming threat with awful tabletop rules for 9th edition but strong fluff

shell pebble

barren tapir

Boomlover, it is better to ask what isn't... The answer is probably shorter

Okay uh

#

Every system of planets

#

See; Every solar system

#

has its own governing body

#

You have everything from highly religious farm planets and feudal-level worlds with kings and queens

storm jungle

In short its literally every evil regime imaginable condensed into each other along with some religious sects and slapped repeatedly so it keeps working.

No lmao

You know i just expected everyone to say facist

This is a welcome suprise

Its more like.... a semi religious Oligarchy

Now, it may pass as a joke, but stellaris have a nice govern system, which can help a bit when trying to understand what type of government the imperium can be

its other aspects are equally bigger

final spruce

My logic was is that its able to cut through ceramite armor and tank armor

not exactly

So it should be able to cut a reinforced door

it has all to do with the type of weapon

Yeah its great

they're warriors second by nature

potent swift

I never really paid much attention to Custodes but this book is making them out to be pretty interesting. It's also doing a handy job of improving their image to me after that short story where one goes full meme Inquisitor and starts executing Greyshields cause the chapter they're going to went Renegade.

final spruce

Isn't there a japanese proverb that is like "It's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener on a battlefield." ?

cursive hull
#

It does make sense that lifewards would need to learn some hobbies. Most of the time they won't be doing much of anything important.

#

Kinda applies wholesale for the entire setting, tbh.

#

Space Marines and pretty much all transhumans need hobbies of some kind because they won't always be fighting.

Its just more important for the Custodes because they don't do anything the majority of the time.

I'm gonna be that guy: I think there arent enough katanas in 40k.

final spruce

Ya got Taus, Death cult assassins and White Scars

thin horizon

I personally practice german longsword, but katanas are pretty cool.

#

Taus dont use katanas that I'm aware, death cult I'm not familiar with, and white scars are based on mongols

final spruce
#

But all 3 do use them

#

Taus well don't really because its their ritual weapon and if someone reaches tau warriors in melee well they are in a pickle

#

Death cult assassins do use power katanas and one of the successor chapters of white scars do use katanas

atomic pelican

If ur talking abt the bonding knife Its not a katana

just gav thorpe things

#

was supposed(?) to be about how cool teh eldar are

#

but they just look like dumbasses

atomic pelican
#

Eldar get fucked in their own books and are written as complete morons despite being m illenia old

#

gav has to crank his dark angel hog really hard and destroy eldar wheneve rhe can

vast frigate
#

ayes

atomic pelican
#

For example, a short story where a eldar autarch, a warrior who has walked every aspect path and has millenia of military experience, panicking and ordering his troops to fire shuriken weapons into a tank

#

rather than squishy marines

storm jungle
#

Theres really nothing to complain about

atomic pelican

then describes a guardian cowering in fear

storm jungle

the guy just cant write eldar

#

thats really it lol

#

also yeah that

#

the guy wrote half the eldar lore yet contradicts it all the time

summer niche
#

i will still claim that path of eldar books has some cool aspects shown of eldar society

mainly the warface and the aspects

storm jungle

like, specifically, is it the ynnari stuff?

nah its just the general dumb stuff and why hes a bad donk writer

storm jungle
#

Ah

#

So as said above he writes eldar culture extremely well

#

borrowing a lot from celtic, hindu and egyptian elements

#

but when it comes to writing war scenes he HAS TO bring up constantly that the eldar are a dying species

#

aka they just get killed and the main character cries about it

summer niche
#

don't forget native american too

#

the warface stuff is facinating

storm jungle
#

Yeee good point

OR the farseers/seers in his stories and their prophecies

summer niche
#

summer niche
#

it's hard to write a story when even the main chars don't think they can do anything

storm jungle
#

^

#

And guess what happens! More eldar die!

So thats really just it.

#

If you want a prime example of gav's writing; and one Proud was referencing; take a look at this 1 month old excerpt from r40klore

#

and this is just a short story

#

He only dimly recalled the battles that had raged through the domes of his craftworld, though the memory of the Emperor’s Space Marines was far more distinct. Terrifying giants with warengines that had killed hundreds of his fellow eldar.

#

To consider such brutal power married to the worship of the Dark Gods sent a fresh shiver of anxiety coursing through his body. All instinct told him that he should flee.

shuriken weapons can fucking shred spcae marine armor btw

As Fulgrim sought to push himself to his feet, Marius Vairosean jammed the end of his sonic cannon into Fulgrim’s neck and unleashed a barrage of squalling harmonics that filled the gallery with ear-bleeding noise. Fulgrim howled, but whether it was in pain or pleasure Lucius could not tell.

Fabius snatched the pliers from Lucius with an angry scowl.

‘Excruciation is a precise and meticulous art, a stepped pyramid of pain,’ he said. ‘To randomly cut and maim is the work of amateurs. I will have no part in such butchery.’

But have no qualms say, unleashing thrakka on a entire string of worlds to save themselves via prophecy

crisp heath
#

Well there you go, every race can justify it's atrocities lol

atomic pelican
#

Not quite. The Imperium will eliminate xenos just for existing, Craftworlders generally atleast have some reason

crisp heath
#

The truth being that humans don't xenocide simply to get off on the extermination, but the threat posed by the other, especially given the threats humanity has encountered and lost to, or suffered a great cost from

atomic pelican
#

Thats not to say theyre innocent by any means

crisp heath
#

Well thanks for the info I really need to read up more on the other races, my primary interests were certain 30k races, the imperium, or tyranids

crisp heath
#

90% of Xenos in lore have or are openly hostile to human race and frequently carry planetwide wars of devastation and brutality on billions of innocent men, women, and children

Redditors: "How dare the fascist Imperium kill aliens, haven't they heard of aliens like Spock????"

Tfw pulling a 90% stat completely out of thin air

Do we have imperium defenders

"What are you arguing in favor of? To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. Think Chud, think!"

I wish people would give up chud, it's embarrassing to read, you'd think after a hundred years they'd have a better insult

atomic pelican
#

Its pretty new

primal tide
#

Bro I can assure you I have not been saying chud for 100 years

atomic pelican

Immortan chapin

crisp heath

atomic pelican

Ur going to prove the black templar stereotype arent you

crisp heath
#

Not particularly I just think chud is a cringy insult

#

Not that I mean to insult you chapin

primal tide
#

Oh don't worry, I'm not insulted

crisp heath
#

And yeah unironically it'd be better to die a child laborer in a hive world falling into a vat of molten metal because the machine god willed it, and the mechanicus declared safety railings heretical than to serve any other group in the 40k universe, unless maybe you were just born on ork, but that would be little better than being born a Tyranid lol

primal tide
#

Idk man, I think Id rather be a butler for some tau than a child boiled alive in metal

#

Not trying to kinkshame tho

crisp heath
#

Lol to each their own

crisp heath
# atomic pelican Ur going to prove the black templar stereotype arent you

And my political leanings go as far as A. I want to live, and B. I do my best to be kind to everyone I meet, and help those I can. I like the Black Templars because I like the color black and they, like the dark angles have an amusing character. In practicality I'd probably be better off with a faction that allowed psykers

atomic pelican
#

Its fine im just teasing

primal tide
#

I do enjoy the black templars not giving a shit about the codex astartes

#

punk rock vibes

crisp heath
#

One of their better qualities ironically

atomic pelican
#

The more out there chapters in that aspect are def more interesting

#

Probs why UM are so boring to me

crisp heath
#

I do like the UMs as some kind of representation of order, perfection, an ideal. But they're not as tested in as difficult or interesting of fights as many other chapters must endure, and the aesthetic of the chapter* is kind of boring and unimaginative as a result

I like their aesthetic, roman empire marines are dope. Problem is they usually just get displayed as bland marines without any iconography
