The 9th legion (The legion which you play as in this game) disapeared without a trace. Five thousand men entered a forest in England and was never seen or heard from again TO THIS VERY DAY. there are some ways to turn worlds even outside of the preexisting storms. As for chaos controlled worlds, we do not get much on them. The most normal ones we see are the chaos knight worlds, but those definitely aren't all daemon worlds

However, as a general rule of thumb, chaos tends to bring more of a fantasy aesthetic with it, compared to the imperial gilded gothic. Chaos undivided especially markets itself not as service to a god, but as the study of the greater truth of the universe

I would be careful to mention that the "thickness of the veil" is not a generally applicable measurement. These things can be very wonky and often end up as plot devices
remember, warhammer 40k is a fantasy setting in space just as much as it is scifi. It's just that the imperium religiously denies the magical aspects of the setting
even the most mundane imperial world will have mutants and people born with superpowers (aka psykers), it's just that they tend to suppress that stuff through indoctrination and a lot of violence

Then in the Nox Alpha cutscene all we see are a comissar, a captain and a lot of lasmen (to my understanding)
