(1) There are certain fixed events that must have had happened - however, the precise details of those events are always wibbly-wobbly.
(2) All factions (and, in the case of Imperium, all related Imperial sub-factions) have their basic background lore that is mostly consistent enough to relate them to each other.

But then there is no grand plot - things are, like IRL, just snippets of things just happening with the passage of time.
