• Gaunt is literally just a result of Abnett never wanting to make complex protagonists who are actually somewhat evil or due fucked up shit their job requires of them which is what being a Commissar is.

Hesh feels different because he doesnt relish his position but still kills questionably innocent people that dont really deserve it just to boost morale and also has a lot of cool moments of cold stoicism like threatening that Mordian tank commander and taking lead of his entire column. I feel like the most horrific part for me was Nolan seeing his dad. Having a slight pause only to recognize him.

It made me remember a similar account from a jewish concentration camp survivor.

He was tasked with throwing bodies. It was basically routine for him. He paused for a little bit before throwing another body in.

That body was his wife. He only had a short moment to grieve.

And Nolan pausing when seeing his dad's corpse basically had me think of that situation.

He couldn't grieve. He probably didn't even know how.

And if he ever even showed a sign of genuine sadness. He probably would've been beaten for being weak
