OK, I am going to say this in some fairness and devil on the fence hopping - there are broadly two approaches to story writing. One, the creator sticks to their guns firmly like a die hard, and has solid foundations for a fictional universe with it's own full history and such.

Two, is what is sometimes called "broad strokes" or "negative" appraoch - that is, there are a very, very few central ideas that are the basics, but beyond those basics, everything is mutable, and occasionally even the basic pillars are shifted.

I am not saying there is no value of the first, and indeed some of the greatest literature works (i.e. the actual LOTR books) belong firmly in the first category.

However, 40k firmly exists in the second category, even if there was a period where it looked like the first category (probably for the worse)

@midnight dragon I think I'm just going to say this: there are two layers to the issue you have pointed out, all of which are actually very different issues.

(1) Retcons/story setting being changed: I won't deny that retcons are technically a sign that something is not well thought out or well written. However, we have to remember the 40k setting is an ongoing product, and not like novels which have a fixed one off setting. With novels, you can create a solid fixed history and stick to your guns (once written, already sold...), but with a tabletop lore setting, ultimately, even if I like 40k I know it will always be up to execs to change.

(2) Fandom/lore decisions: The people who complain the loudest may be fans, but they cannot speak for the entire fandom (even if they deluded themselves into thinking so). The very fact that GW's financials are actually looking healthier than ever (and being one of the well performing stocks on the UK stock exchange no less) should tell you how litte credit those femtodes doomsayers have in general.
